and gratitude. We're going to bethrowing around encouragement, a

(00:30):
Ciao friends welcome to episodetwo of season three of the life
Out Loud Podcast. I'm thecreator of this podcast and your
host Desireé Melfi Bozzo. If youare a new, newer, new-ish
listener, hurray! I am so gladyou are here. For my returning

(00:52):
friends – I truly treasure youand the time that you're
spending with me in this place.
So thank you. This season as youmay know, we are doing a deep
dive into the fruits of theSpirit. And if you aren't
familiar with them, head back tothe last episode and take a
quick listen. I offer reallygood foundational knowledge
that's going to set you up forsome big gains this season. I'm

(01:15):
going to spend each episode ofseason three exploring the
fruits and the wonderful waysthat we can apply them to our
lives. Galatians 5 tells us theyare love joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness,faithfulness, gentleness and
perhaps the most difficult foryours truly as far as ice cream

(01:35):
is concerned self control. Inthis episode, we are starting
with the first fruit love.
So perhaps the most famousscripture on love is the one you
hear at most weddings FirstCorinthians 13: 4-13 we all know

(01:55):
and love it. Say it with me.
“Love is patient, love is kindit does not envy it does not
boast it is not proud. It doesnot dishonor others it is not
self seeking, it is not easilyangered it keeps no record of
wrongs. Love does not delight inevil but rejoices with the
truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes,

(02:16):
always perseveres.” And wecontinue in the beginning of
verse eight with “Love neverfails.” Looking a few verses
ahead at verse 13, we learn “andnow these three remain faith,
hope and love. But the greatestof these is love.” Friends, Can
I be honest in the safe spaceand tell you that when this was

(02:39):
read at our wedding, I thoughtit was so pretty. Of course it
was so beautiful and Oh,fairytale-esque right. But I
don't think I completely graspedthe bigness of it all. See, when
I married my husband at 24, Ididn't get the magnitude of what
I was stepping into. This fall,we've been married for 15 years

(03:03):
and together for 20. I can tellyou that these verses are
everything when it comes to agood happy joy-filled successful
marriage. Also, side note, incase no one really mentioned it.
None of this is remotely easy, like at all. And here is the
other piece. These verses thoughsaid at weddings aren't just for

(03:26):
marriages. These words on loveare for all of our
relationships, with ourchildren, with our parents, with
our families, with our friends, with our co-workers with total
strangers. These verses are forthe people we like and they're
for the ones that we can't bemore different than. We are

(03:48):
called to love when it's reallyreally easy. And when it's
really really hard. CS Lewistells us that, and I'm going to
quote, “love is not affectionatefeeling. But a steady wish for
the loved persons ultimate good.
As far as it can be attained.”It is wishing for the ultimate

(04:10):
good of another, even when wedon't feel it. Let me tell you
for someone who enjoys thefeeling of a good feeling, OOF!
This can be really difficult.
Anyone else out there feel me onthis? Asking for a friend.
Love isn't a feeling that wechase in this world. Loving

(04:33):
other people is a choice. It'ssomething we choose every day.
It's a far cry from the liesabout love that we find
portrayed in mainstream songsand books and TV shows and
movies. Love isn't a feeling atall. As a matter of fact, that
feeling of being in lovescientifically lasts about a
year. After that the nervegrowth factor which is the

(04:56):
chemical in charge of strongromantic feelings. actually
starts to decrease. I think loveis the first fruit that's
mentioned in this list andGalatians five, because I truly
believe it's the foundationalfruit. If we aren't bearing the
fruit of love, and I mean liketrue sacrificial biblical love,
it means we haven't grasped thestory of the gospel. And if we

(05:19):
haven't grasped the ultimatesacrifice of John 3:16. Woah!
Now you might point to this andsay it's cliche, but it's
actually real, biblical truth.
For God so loved the world thatHe gave His one and only Son
that whoever believes in Himshall not perish but have
eternal life. In the mostincredible display of love the
world has ever seen. Ourincredible Mighty God gave His

(05:44):
Son, our sweet savior, to die ahorrific death on a cross for
you. And for me. To believe thisis to take the heart posture of
love. Everything begins withthis.
Friends, I know, I know thatsuper heavy. It's probably more

(06:04):
than what you were asking forwhen you pushed play on this
podcast, but it really all doescome down to love. In Psalm 91:
14-16, it's by far my favoritePsalm. Oh, it's so good. The
Lord directly speaks to us andshows us his love for us. It's
so prophetically in these versesthat he offers a seven promises

(06:26):
because He loves us. They arereserved for the ones so close
to him so near to him, that theybelieve it and walk in obedience
because of it. And let me stophere for a second. If obedience
is a word that makes you bristleor want to click the off button,
don't. I encourage you insteadto head over to the very last
episode of season two, where Iunpack obedience in a really

(06:49):
relatable way? It's not as badas it seems, I promise. So
picking back up friends becauseGod loves us, He will rescue us.
This is one of those sevenpromises and Psalm 91. He will
rescue us He will protect us. Hewill answer us He will be with
us in trouble. He will deliverus He will honor us. He will

(07:12):
satisfy us with long life andshow us his salvation. It is in
direct relation to thesepromises that we can love others
because God loved us first. Inknowing Him, His love can shine
through us. In knowing him wecan love the unlovable and
others – not saying it's easy, but we can do it.

(07:36):
The greatest thing we can do inour lives is love. It is the
thing that leaves the mostlasting impact in the world. I
venture to say it's greater thanthe work we do. Love is worth
more than the money we make. Andlove will take us to places we
can never get in a car, on aboat or on a plane. Love is the
end game. When we love oneanother we change the game. Love

(08:00):
is the first fruit and it's thevery first fruit and I venture
to say it's because all theothers were born from love. We
can only do the other fruits andbear the other fruits because it
all starts with love. Before Isign off, I want to leave you
with one of I think it'sprobably one of my favorite
quotes on love. And it's byRachel Macy Stafford and she

(08:24):
says “Today I will choose love.
Tomorrow, I will choose love andthe day after that I will choose
love. If I mistakenly choosedistraction perfections or
negativity over love. I will notwallow in regret. I will choose
love until it becomes who I am.”Friends. I hope you enjoyed

(08:45):
episode 2 of season 3. I reallyhope that you see love in a
different way. And I hope it'sin a way that can change the way
you live. As always, please sendme a message. I love hearing
your thoughts. Come back nexttime we're going to continue to
throw encouragement around likeconfetti but be careful if you
get too close. You just mightget some on you. And remember,

(09:07):
there is always always alwayssomething to be thankful for.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
