As usual…we usually don’t get far before finding the next awesome distraction. Just 70 or so miles outside of Fargo…a road sign would point us to the Shooting Star Casino in a place called Mahnomen Minnesota. What we thought would be an over night stay quickly became so much more!

From Harvey…we’d make the 200 mile drive into Fargo. I’d gone to Fargo hoping to learn more about the father I never knew. Came up short on that front…but Fargo had plenty of other info to share.

A random turn off of Highway 2 on to County road 2. One DETOUR sign later and we would find ourselves learning about a place called Anamoose North Dakota. With another 131 miles in the rearview, we’ve left Montana and would introduce ourselves to North Dakota in a place called Ray. Pretty awesome couple of days alongside the river…learning about Ray, and reminiscing about the good ‘ol days.

Today’s drive took us out of the rugged beauty of the Sweet Grass Mountains and back onto the asphalt ribbon of Highway 2. The 300-mile drive to Wolf Point offered a generous helping of Montana’s boundless, open skies and sweeping landscapes. We found a great spot for some shut eye and spent the eve...

Montana is a lot of things. And day by day…mile by mile…it is becoming more and more. To us.
The miles, the mountains, and the plains rolled by as we continued our trek across Big Sky Country. And like so many other places we have stumbled upon…our time in Whitlash Montana…well…it all started with...

Leaving Craig, Montana, felt strange. I didn’t want to go—I had uncovered so much there, like pieces of a puzzle I didn’t know I was solving.
But turns out…Craig was only half the story. Half of me.
The rest, I felt, was waiting in a place called Fargo, North Dakota.

Finally! Craig Montana! Spending some time in and learning about the little town in Montana where it all began. My pioneer ancestors settled the area that would be named for them over 130 years ago. So great to walk in their footsteps.

An awesome day of driving...and discovering! From Clark Canyon Reservoir, we'd find our way to Bannack...a super cool ghost town preserved by the state...to Wolf Creek...to our spot for the night in the Beartooth Wildlife Managment Area above the Holter Dam Recreation Area. Montana at it's very best...

An awesome day of driving! A little of everything. The Rocky Mountain Ranges of Idaho...and the awesome discovery of Wisdom Montana...and remembering Ivan Doig's novel..."Last Bus to Wisdom". We also learned about Skijoring...and what folks do for fun around here in the winter!

A 200-mile drive would take us from Wyoming, up over the Grand Tetons, and into Idaho. We called it a night in a place called Spencer. Another evening of learning...this time about the Opal Capital of America...and...Fences.

Just 70 miles up the road from Fontenelle Wyoming...we found another piece of amazing. This time...BLM land in the hills surrounding Daniel Wyoming. With the Grand Teton Mountains...and the Green River providing the views...while we learned all about The Rocky Mountain Rendezvous.

Coming down out of the Wild Horse Loop...above Green River and Rock Springs Wyoming...we didn't make it far before spotting the Fontenelle Reservoir...where we found the perfect spot for some more learning...and a little shut eye.

An awesome drive from Elk Springs Colorado to Craig Colorado...back out through Maybell Colorado...into, and through the Gates of Ladore Mountains. The drive would lead us to Green River Wyoming...and some amazing boon docking at 7000 feet up...on the "Wild Horse Loop".

We ended our trek across Harpers Corner Road in a tiny little spot called Elk Springs Colorado. What was intended to be a quick stop for some shut eye...turned into two days of wandering the ruins of another small town...long since gone. ...

Took a different route out of Colorado this time. Some pretty amazing views of the canyons of the Dinosaur National Monument and Harpers Corder Road.
Not to mention…a ton more learning!

As awesome as our campsite was off Miners Draw Road...That "Cliff Ridge" just above us was just too tempting!
We trekked just 10 miles or so up into those Utah Mountains....and find our way to the Colorado side of things...and more incredible views.

A couple days camping along the Green River in Jensen Utah was pretty awesome...until temps chased us back up into the mountains of Utah.
This time...a two track called Miners Draw Road would provide just the break we needed from the heat...and a pretty awesome lesson in the ranching history of the ...

And the social distancing continues! Back down out of the Ashley National Forest of Utah for a couple nights along the Green River in Jensen Utah...But then… the heat chased us back up into those mountains!
