Meathead is one of only 40 living Barbecue Hall of Famers. He is the publisher of AmazingRibs.com, the largest and most popular barbecue and grilling website in the world, and the author of “Meathead: The Science of Great Barbecue and Grilling,” published in 2016. It was a New York Times bestseller, named “One of the 100 Best Cookbooks of All Time” by Southern Living Magazine, and called an “indispensable guide” by The New Yorker. His second book, “The Meathead Method,” published in 2025, was called “The only book on outdoor cookery you’ll ever need” by Alton Brown of the Food Network, and it introduces new cooking methods and takes barbecue and grilling out of the box.

In this episode, Philip and Meathead discuss:

  • Building communities that last
  • Combining passion with science
  • Adapting through innovation
  • Leading with purpose and consistency

Lightbulb Moments:

  • Meaningful two-way engagement creates loyalty and long-term growth. When people feel part of something—like a club or shared space—they stay, share, and help the community thrive.
  • True mastery comes from curiosity and evidence, not tradition alone. Learning the science behind your craft transforms both the process and the results, leading to lasting excellence.
  • Technology and tools, from thermometers to AI, continually reshape how we work and connect. Staying curious and willing to adapt keeps your craft and business ahead of change.
  • Sustainable success comes from aligning passion with structure—like books, memberships, and renewal-focused models. When purpose meets process, both impact and stability grow.

“Technology permeates every aspect of our lives… chefs today, the top chefs are all geeks like me. They're all into the science… and they all can teach you how to cook perfectly.” - Meathead

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

It’s 1996 in rural North Carolina, and an oddball crew makes history when they pull off America’s third largest cash heist. But it’s all downhill from there. Join host Johnny Knoxville as he unspools a wild and woolly tale about a group of regular ‘ol folks who risked it all for a chance at a better life. CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist answers the question: what would you do with 17.3 million dollars? The answer includes diamond rings, mansions, velvet Elvis paintings, plus a run for the border, murder-for-hire-plots, and FBI busts.
