Staying grounded amid chaos isn't about perfection—it's about finding that crucial space between stimulus and response. When your child spills milk all over their homework while you're juggling your day job and dinner prep, how do you respond? That momentary pause, that deep breath before reacting, can transform the entire situation.

This episode explores the art of staying regulated when life gets loud. We dive into the misconception that groundedness equals perfection, clarifying that being grounded actually means staying present, aware, and intentional during difficult moments. The pause—that brief moment between chaos and response—becomes your parenting superpower, not just helping you maintain composure but modeling emotional regulation for your children.

motherhood, growth andself-discovery.
I'm Renee, your host, and I'mso glad you're here.
Today's episode was inspired bya conversation I had with one

(00:26):
of my girlfriends.
We talked about those chaoticdays, you know, the ones where
our kids are melting down, thelaundry's piling high and dinner
is nowhere near ready and we'rejust trying not to yell.
It got me thinking how do wetruly stay grounded when

(00:52):
everything around us feels outof control?
So let's explore that togethertoday.
First off, let's clearsomething up being grounded does
not mean being perfect.
It's easy to mistakegroundedness for perfection,

(01:15):
thinking you need to handleevery situation flawlessly, but
that's not real life.
Being grounded means you'reregulated, aware and intentional
.
It means taking that smallpause between the chaos and your

(01:35):
response.
Just the other day, I wasjuggling scheduling work brought
home from my day job andprepping dinner when my youngest
spilled milk all over herhomework.
My immediate reaction, ofcourse, frustration.

(01:57):
But then I took a deep breath.
I paused and reminded myselfit's just milk and we don't cry
over spilt milk.
And guess what?
It made all the difference.
That pause, that pause right, there is your parenting

(02:20):
superpower.
When life gets loud, thatmomentary pause helps you
reclaim control.
It could be a deep breath or asimple phrase like I choose calm
, or just counting silently tofive.

(02:41):
Silently to five, and you knowwhat the beauty of the pause is.
Our kids learn emotionalregulation from watching us.
Each pause we take teaches themthat they too can handle big
feelings without gettingoverwhelmed.

(03:02):
It's about modeling the calm wehope that they'll embrace.
All right, let's get practical.
Here's some tools you can useimmediately to help you in those
real-life moments.
First, sensory grounding.

(03:24):
When things begin to spiral, try naming five things.
You see four things you cantouch, three sounds.
You hear, two things.
You smell and one thing youtaste.
This simple exercise pulls youback into the present moment.

(03:44):
Exercise pulls you back intothe present moment.
Next, step away briefly.
It's okay to say to yourchildren I'll be back when I'm
ready to speak kindly.
This models healthy boundariesand teaching them it's okay to
pause.
It also lets your child knowthat we're all human and we all

(04:10):
need to take a beat sometimes.
Finally, you can use visualanchors like a bracelet, a note
or flyer on your fridge, or evensome calming essential oils
Something tangible that canbring you back to center.

(04:37):
Remember, grounding isn't forpicture-perfect, quiet homes.
It's for the messy, real, reallife homes like yours and mine.
So, as we wrap up today, remember, if things get loud,

(04:58):
messy or even overwhelming, giveyourself permission to pause.
You're not failing because it'shard.
You're parenting, you'regrowing and you're beautifully
human.
I'd love to hear from youwhat's your go-to grounding

(05:23):
strategy.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
