We're back on the air after a brief hiatus, fired up and ready to reconnect with our Live Free in Ham community as we celebrate an incredible milestone – two years of podcasting!

The chemistry between hosts Eric, Todd, and Paul lights up this anniversary episode with authentic conversation that weaves through recent ham radio adventures. Paul shares his journey to Wisconsin for a park activation with YouTuber Chris KD9YSW, overcoming antenna positioning challenges and navigating interstate traffic mishaps. Todd recounts his whirlwind Florida trip where his POTA gear stayed packed due to unexpected travel complications, while Eric tests RF chokes that remarkably eliminate vehicle alternator interference during field operations.

Between discussing Netflix's ham radio portrayal in "Zero Day" and celebrating Todd's perfect score on his Extra Class license practice questions, the team reflects on their podcasting journey. From their first episode in June 2023 to surpassing 12,000 downloads, they share key milestones that shaped the show's evolution. The hosts reveal how their friendship formed through POTA activations, discuss favorite guest appearances (with the Hillbilly Ham Radio crew earning special mention), and express genuine gratitude for the community that's grown around their weekly conversations.

What makes this podcast special? As one listener noted, "Your chemistry is amazing—you guys play off each other naturally, not pushing an agenda, just letting it fly." That's the essence of Live Free in Ham—authentic ham radio enthusiasts sharing their passion without scripts or pretense. Whether you've been with us since day one or just discovering us now, join our growing community of amateur radio operators who appreciate straight talk, practical experiences, and genuine camaraderie on the airwaves.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
It's not a big expense all right.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Well, yeah, and bob is 100 dead on about that.
Um, so, you know, head on overto our patreon, check it out,
become, uh, you know, asubscriber and a supporter and,
uh, you know, we'll let you inon some of the cool stuff.
All right, so with that, uh, wehave a special uh mail bag this
week ladies and gentlemen, canI please have your attention?

(02:57):
I've just been handed an urgentand horrifying news story.
Everybody, we got some news.
Slow down, boog, let me handlethis.
We've got some news, I've gotbad news and bad news I have
reviewed ship's personnelcaptain.
Congratulations, you've gotmail well, let's get back to the

(03:18):
real show here.
If I get to the right templatethere, we go all right.
Well, so we've got some mailbag mail there.
Todd, take it away, my friend.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
All right.
Well, bob cough sent us.
I uh, it sounds like he justsent me the message, but it says
hey, uncle Todd, don't forget.
Don't forget me about yourfavorite nephew when you win the
lottery.
So thanks, bob.
Yeah, I won't forget you.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
You already did, bob Sorry.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Yeah, bob, I uh.
Uh.
I didn't even know what thehell you're talking about,
because I can't remember what Idid yesterday, let alone three
podcasts ago.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
Make sure you get it right, bob.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
That's all we have to say I'll put you on the list,
all right, uh, and the secondone we got, and and this just
goes to verify when I've toldeveryone that the something
extra with todd is really whythis show is taking off.
It is hi, I live free in handWanted to say thank you for the
extra segment with Todd.
I found your podcast in my feeda couple months ago and went a

(04:16):
long trip and started listening.
After weeks of listening toyour segment and getting your
extra got me thinking about myupgrade.
I had done a little study in ayear ago and then stopped due to
life.
It's kind of like where I'm at.
On June 25th, after a week ofhitting practice tests hard and
looking over material I washaving issues with, I passed my

(04:37):
extra test in time for field day.
I'm rooting for Todd to passthe test and I hope you keep
some form of this segment goingafter to keep inspiring hams to
upgrade their license from K Eeight V, w, f slash a E.
Well, congratulations, that'sawesome and I'm kind of like

(05:03):
right there with you.
I I've got two more weeks ofbaseball and then I'm going to
really hit the books and try toget this thing out of the way
and we'll figure something outwhen, the when and if I ever get
my extra when that day comes,we'll cross that bridge right.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
We'll just we'll start doing technician questions
.
We'll see how many of those youcan get Right.
Yeah, We'll start doingtechnician questions.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
We'll see how many of those you can get right.
Yeah, no kidding, I know I'dfail horribly.
The last time I took thetechnician's test was over 30
years ago and the question poolwas way different then.
All right, well, cool, good.
Thank you again for everybodysending stuff in.
If you want to send something in, you can always send us in one
of three ways, as Watson says.
You can always send us in oneof three ways, as Watson says.

(05:45):
You can, you know, send it viawin link, if you're, you know,
well, you know, verse in winlink and you become part of our
win link, elite folks.
You can send us via email atlive free and ham at gmailcom.
Or you can head up to ourwebsite and leave us.
You know our comment form there.
Or last part, heck, you knowour comment form there.
Or last part, heck, you know,be brave, use our voicemail

(06:06):
number.
Leave us a voicemail and we'llplay it on our next episode.
So awesome.
So with that, let's go into thescene.
That seems to supporteverything in this whole entire
podcast here.
It's everyone's favoritesegment.
And now a little somethingextra with Todd WNSTJ.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Still a general.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
All right.
Well, as always, you've heardit here.
This is where we help Toddstudy for his extra class
license, and many others likeyourself.
Uh, that, uh, okay.
Uh, where did paul go?
There we go.
I was like, where did todd go?
He dropped off here.
Um, he's the one testing, notme.
Um, so with that, uh, you know, each episode we always pick
three questions for that extracross question pool.

(07:00):
Uh, tested knowledge and hopinghe gets his upgrade.
So if you want to follow along, you can always head over to
hamstudyorg.
It's a great resource to helpprepare for your test and it's
always recommended by four outof four VEs, because the VEs
guys, they're just the best.
This is the way it goes, youknow, and all of there's,
nothing else, but nothing to therest.
I was trying to make a rhymethere and that fell out pretty
fast.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
So anyway, pretty fast.
So anyway, all right, withoutany further day, and I'm gonna
shut my mouth here.
I'm gonna hand it over the vequiz master.
Take it away, paul, all right.
I just gotta say I love the,the new intro, where it's
everybody's favorite segmentthat's great.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
It's a, it's a combined effort, but todd at the
very end in the somber way, still a general.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
All right, todd.
So question number one for thisevening comes from sub-element
number seven.
What is a crystal latticefilter?
Is it A a power supply filtermade with interlaced quartz
crystals, a power supply filtermade with interlaced quartz

(08:07):
crystals.
B An audio filter made withfour quartz crystals that
resonate at one kilohertzintervals.
C A filter for low-levelsignals made using quartz

(08:30):
crystals.
Or is it D a filter usinglattice-shaped quartz crystals
for high Q performance?

Speaker 1 (08:37):
Oh man, I don't remember this one.
I like how they just like justa little bit more every answer.
It's like it could be this one.
It could be this one.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
So this is what I'm thinking.
I'm thinking crystal latticeand then lattice shaped quart
crystals for high q performance, but I think I would have
remembered that when I wasstudying, so I think it's.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
I'm gonna go with c I don't know I the high q
performance is a big thing.
For me it kind of sticks out.
I'll go with d, although bprobably is the answer all right
.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
Well, todd said c, oh , nice job is correct there is
correct, there we go and D isnot so.
A crystal lattice filter is afilter for low-level signals
made using quartz crystals.
Note, there's a slightdifference in layout between

(09:38):
crystal lattices and ladders.
There are pairs of crystalswithin lattice networks.
Resonant modes are paired witheach crystal in the lattice that
facilitate an intended bandpassenvelope to pass.
So, hint, lattice is for lowlevel.
There you go, all right, greatjob, todd.

(10:01):
Thank you, nice job, bud, nicejob.
Question number two comes fromsub-element number four.
Which of the following types ofnoise can often be reduced by a
digital noise reduction?
Is it A broadband white noise,b power line noise, c ignition

(10:28):
noise or D?
All of these choices arecorrect.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
All of these choices are correct.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
I'm going to go with all of them.
Yep Digital noise does a lot.
You hit it and everything getsquiet.
D and R.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Do not resuscitate.

Speaker 3 (10:47):
All right.
Final answer is D and D iscorrect.
Nice job.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
Two for two man here is the song.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
Dsp noise reduction operates by examining a
characteristic of signals andnoise called correlation and
dynamically filtering out theundesired noise.
Correlation is a measure of theregularity of a signal.
In most DSP noise blankerimplementations, the amount of
noise reduction varies accordingto the correlation

(11:21):
characteristics of the noise.
Random noise, such as whitenoise or static, is uncorrelated
.
Speech and ignition noise ismoderately correlated.
Heterodynes and pure tones arehighly correlated.
There you go.
Fantastic.
Look at that Two for two.

Speaker 1 (11:42):
Yep.
Now the pressure's on.

Speaker 3 (11:50):
Okay, sick, look at that.
Two for two.
Yep, now the pressure's on.
Okay, for the third and finalquestion of the evening.
What is an I a r p?
Oh, that's an I, not an l, it'snot larp, it's not an l elon's
not helping me out here.

Speaker 1 (12:02):
It it's all blurry, a little blurry there, my friend.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
Go ahead, yeah, Okay, Well, I'll read it anyway.
So what is an IARP?
Is it A the internal amateurradio practices policy of the
FCC, practices policy of the FCC.

(12:32):
B a permit that allows USamateurs to operate in certain
countries of the Americas.
C an indication of increasedantenna reflected power.
Or is it D a forecast of theintermittent Aurora radio
propagation.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
No song tonight.
I'm going to go with B, myfinal answer.

Speaker 1 (12:56):
I have no freaking clue, I don't know.
He said that with confidenceI'll do a C.
All right, I'll do.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
He said that, with confidence, I'll do a C.
All right, with confidence, todd says, be a permit that
allows US amateurs to operate incertain countries of the
Americas.

Speaker 1 (13:18):
Todd is correct.

Speaker 3 (13:22):
I'll be honest, I was a little on the fence with this
one.
I didn't know you were going toget it right, but so thanks for
the coffee.

Speaker 1 (13:30):
Hey, you're welcome.
He's honest, so uhinternational amateur radio
permit.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
I A R P is for operation in certain countries
of the Americas and it allows usamateur radio operators to
operate without seeking aspecial license or permit to
operate from that country.
For a US citizen to operate anamateur radio station in a CITEL
country, an IARP is necessaryand may be issued by a member

(14:03):
society of the internationalamateur radio union for the U S,
the amateur American radiorelay league.
The permit lists its authorityin four different languages.
So well done, todd.

Speaker 1 (14:21):
Good job bud.
Three for three way to go.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
The long time I went three for three way to go, a
long time since I went three forthree.

Speaker 1 (14:26):
See, apparently we need to like just take a big
break and, you know, just talkabout absolutely nothing for two
weeks oh man, that was good, nice, and I don't even get to
hear the song man.
That sucks, yeah, I only got oneright on the whole ordeal, all
right, well, okay, so you know, hey, if you're on the journey to

(14:47):
studying for your techniciangeneral or that extra class
license, then hamstudyorg is anawesome resource for getting
your ticket, you know.
And maybe, if you just, like afew others, have received your
license or maybe you've upgraded, we want to know.
So you know we can recognizeyou on our next episode and

(15:08):
share uh all of and revel in allof the great glory of your uh,
you know achievement there.
So, hey, if you uh have gottenyour new ticket, or maybe you
get an upgrade, you can alwayshit us up at livefreeandham, at
gmailcom or in any of the otherways that you can reach out to
us.
Let us just know and, uh, we'llmake sure we mention on the
next episode and actually, withthat, do we have any that we've
known about, paul, they'reusually pretty much in the loop.

Speaker 3 (15:32):
So yeah, I was just in a toad session actually last
Monday we tested.
Somebody went for their generaland somebody went for their
extra.
They both passed Call signs, escaped me.
But yeah, congrats to thoseguys anyways.
Um, and it just so happens thatbecause I have all of my gsara

(15:57):
in-person testing materials withme in the rv, um, you're not
gonna have them when you needthem for the 12 For the in-house
Oopsie.
But I have them For the pop-upsession in Huntsville, so I
guess I don't know You're goingto have to print off some tests.

Speaker 1 (16:20):
And so how many people?
We only have like one person, right.

Speaker 3 (16:24):
I think we're up to five registered now for the 12th
, yeah, in-person session.
Uh, all are brand new umtechnicians, except for one one
upgrade.

Speaker 1 (16:34):
Heck.
You should just, you know, sendout an email and say hey, would
you all like to do a onlineinstead, and do it from the
convenience of your home, and doit that way Instead of doing it
at the bed, and see if you getall five of them to say sure,
then, dude, then you know, I'msure I'll, I'll, I'll be
available for helping out, andI'm sure you'll be able to get
eugene and a bunch of other guysto be able to jump on yeah.

Speaker 3 (16:55):
So the only thing is is, um, you can't test everybody
at the same time unless you'vegot three VEs per person, excuse
me, per person.
Yep, um, so if we didn't, if wedidn't have enough VEs, like
you know, somebody may have towait for you know somebody to
finish so that means they get tosurf the web while they're busy

(17:17):
waiting for us to put them inthe queue.
Got it, um, but yeah, I mean umat this point, it, it.
It may be easier to just switchit to a remote session.

Speaker 1 (17:29):
Yeah, cool, all right , well, you know, hey, we'll
work that out in behind thescenes, as always.
But uh, you know, heck, youknow, we, we love to hear about
people, uh, you know, achievinguh their goals, obviously with
getting their uh, you know, obviously, licensed the first
time, and actually one thatcomes to mind that I just
totally forgot.
I don't think we mentioned theprevious.
Well, I know we didn't mentionlast episode.
Um was a new um younger, uh, 24year old, in our club.

(17:52):
Chris is kc1 wxp, he justrecently got his technician and
he's also, uh, blind and it'sreally cool because I'm learning
a ton of stuff as to the wholeblind community.
You're disappearing there, myfriend.
It's like you're fading in andout.
It's like, oh, my gosh, andyeah, he's teaching me a whole
lot in that area and you know.

(18:14):
So it's really cool.
So yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
Is he 100% blind?
Or like he can't see at all?
No, can't see at all, Not likeyeah.

Speaker 1 (18:27):
Funny story with him, just a sidebar, he actually
does.
He sings the national anthem atbaseball stadiums.
If you google uh blind, uhchris.
Uh dewey, yeah, dewey, I thinkis his his name.
Blind, uh, blind, um, you know,uh man, you switching, I keep
losing my focus.
Baseball national anthem.

(18:48):
Now he's saying the nationalanthem was pretty cool.
So yeah, he does a lot of that.
He does a lot of cool publicspeaking and stuff.
Do we have?

Speaker 2 (18:55):
does he does?
Do we have Braille test?

Speaker 1 (19:02):
I have a good question.
I don't know.
I don't know who he tested witheither.

Speaker 3 (19:05):
I'll have to ask him I mean, uh, I would imagine,
given the the visual impairment,um, you know, it'd be like a
private session with a ve thatwould read the question and the
answers and then mark it for him.
I mean, to me that seems likethe simplest solution.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
Well, and he's, he's technically savvy, like he, very
good at computers and and thatwhole stuff, so he, you know, he
might've taken it online too, with a whole bunch of readers
and everything else like thattoo.
So, yeah, well, I'll have tofind out and report back.

Speaker 2 (19:39):
So it'd be kind of cool yeah, yeah, awesome, and we
should have him come on, weshould have him come on the
podcast?

Speaker 1 (19:46):
definitely we could.
We'll, probably I'll reach outto him see if he's interested
with that.
And uh, funny thing is that, um, he, he's obviously looking for
his latest ht and, you'll neverguess, the only ht on the
market.
That's actually, like you know, ada, you know blind, you know,
you know.
Uh, you know we'll say positiveit's a it's a quanchang, no,

(20:06):
kenwood.
Kenwood is the only one thatdoes it.
And of course you know it's akenwood d75 that does it well
and it does it remarkably welland I'm like, oh man, that sucks
for a kid.
That you know, obviously, isyou know.
So.
So maybe, as a club, you know, maybe, or maybe, hey, live free
and ham, if we get a bunch ofpeople that want to help, maybe
give a new ham, you know, anopportunity to have a really

(20:29):
cool radio and actually use itto its full benefit.
You know, hit us up.
You know, maybe we'll do alittle quick fundraiser and
we'll, you know, buy a D75 forhim and, you know, give it to
him from Live Free and Ham.
So you know that that interestyou.

(20:52):
Hey, you know, let us know, hitus up, we'll talk more about.

Speaker 3 (20:56):
So all right with that.
Uh, let's get into our usualshere.
So, uh, how has your uh hamradio week been?
Uh, n1og, my friend, you knowwhat I did, ham radio shit this
week?
Holy fuck, I know it.
Uh, so, yeah, so I drove, um, Idrove two and a half hours uh
yesterday to Wisconsin, wow, um,and Wisconsin needs to fix
their roads, let me just tellyou.

(21:16):
But, um, so yeah, so I uh, Imet up with, uh, with Chris
Chevrier.
Uh, I'm sure I'm going to, I, Ibutchered that.
But, um, k D, nine, y S W.
Well, you're not going?

Speaker 1 (21:34):
to invite him on, to tell him his call sign, is you
hand the mic to him, just givehim your call sign.

Speaker 3 (21:40):
Alright, listen, it was funny.
So I I must have said his callsign Probably 50 plus times.
And then like we get you On theradio and I just Fucking
blanked on it and I'm like Justsay your own goddamn call sign
literally having the video.

Speaker 1 (22:00):
When the video comes out tomorrow, it's going to
premiere.
It's all you hear is N1OG go.
Oh, fuck it, just give it toyour own call sign again.
I have no, you can tell youthrew the mic at him.
At that point Chris is likeokay, it was cool anyway, but
yeah, so it was a really nicepark.

Speaker 3 (22:20):
I guess there's a little lake and some natural
dunes.
I didn't do a whole lot of parkexploration.
We just we activated.
He told me that, you know, hehad been kind of struggling with
that particular park.
He had been out there threetimes running QRP because,
because that's what he's got,he's got a g90 um and and he had

(22:45):
yet to successfully activatethe park.
Oh okay, and so I was like allright, well, we're gonna go,
we're gonna go, 891 qro with thereliance and fed, and I, I, I
picked a picnic table that wasright next to a tree and, uh,
and wouldn't you know it, right, first, throw perfect shot right

(23:06):
up and over the tree.
Um, but I, I was, I was, I wasreally struggling.
I'm like why, like, so manypeople were like really really
weak and like just not pickingthem up and um, so I was like
people were like really reallyweak and like just not picking
them up and um, so I was likelisten, I said I'm going to
leave the radio on, I'm going tounhook the, the antenna from

(23:27):
the tent stake that I'd put inthe ground and I'm going to pull
it back through the tree andI'm going to throw it 90 degrees
opposite the way that it wasgoing, right, and no shit, right
, I throw it up and over, perfect throw first time.
And, um, so what was it?
Uh, whiskey for bravo, was the,the station that I was trying

(23:52):
to to get and and I wasstruggling hard like he was down
in the noise.
Obviously we were down in thenoise like he.
He had put me in the log anyway, even though, like, I didn't
put him in mine because I I justdidn't get a good copy on the
signal report and whatever.
Um, but with the with theantenna 90 degrees different,

(24:14):
like dude, he was a full 5-8,like nice, good quality, like I
could hear him.
So I called out, I'm like hey,all right, I got you now.
And he's like yeah, I alreadyput you in the log.
Okay, well, can I just get asignal report so that I can put
you in my log and then pleasestand by for the second operator

(24:35):
.
But no, it was a good time.
We got 19 contacts, so it was asuccessful activation.
Just a little bit over an hourActually met a couple guys that
came over and they were like hey, I'm a ham radio operator and
this is my call sign and I justdon't actually do anything with
ham radio and it's like alright.

(24:56):
So the both of them were likedoing family things, you know,
like right near us and they'rejust kind of observing.
And you know, then the, the,the one, the older guy, he came
over afterwards and he's likeasking questions about Watson
and asking questions about theradio and the antenna and
everything else, and it's likedude, if you want to jump in

(25:18):
here, like I'll just say we gotthree ops and you can jump in.
He's like no, no, no, no, no,no, no, I don't, I don't want to
.
You know, it was like you, you,you guys like it's great when
you're doing what you're doing.
So, yeah, so it was a good time, it was a fun activation.

(25:42):
The drive home absolutely sucked.
Driving through Milwaukee islike driving through Boston.
Like you know, 93 throughBoston, like, yeah, you're on
the highway but you're stilllike going through the city.
And so, yeah, it's Air State 43goes through Milwaukee.
And yeah, some Jeeper rearended a fricking Hyundai, uh, in
in the fast lane.
So like the fast lane wasblocked and I'm listening to the

(26:07):
semis and they're all like, yeah, anybody know what the
hell's going on.
Anybody know what the hell'sgoing on.
Finally, we get somebody in thesouthbound lane that goes hey,
listen, yeah, you might want tomove over to right, because the
left lane is totally blocked.
I got it all on video as I wentby.
I had my dash cam going so I'llmake sure to throw that in the

(26:29):
video.
But yeah, it was a good time.
It was good to get out andactivate a park and get another
state.
So now I got Wisconsin in thebooks.

Speaker 1 (26:38):
That's a big and get another state.
So now I got Wisconsin in thebooks.
That's the last time WisconsinThat'll be the last time I go to
.

Speaker 3 (26:42):
Wisconsin, nice.

Speaker 2 (26:46):
Marvin lives out there.

Speaker 3 (26:49):
But like what is Wisconsin known for other than
cheese and Packers?
That's about it.

Speaker 2 (26:56):
That's it, and maybe KB9 VBR, but that's about it.

Speaker 1 (26:57):
Marvin's, that's it.
And maybe kb9 vbr, but that'sabout it.
You know, that's the only otherthird option.
Wow, dude, that's awesome.
And you know, funny story, uh,and I'll, I'll elaborate later.
But like I was literally in themiddle of filming the video for
a review of um, a couple ofchokes that um, uh, matt sent me
and I was like I was, I wastalking about, hey, looking at

(27:21):
the potus spots page and thenall of a sudden I scroll down, I
see n1og and I'm like, oh, I'monly like three hertz up.
So I tune up and it was likedead air for a little bit and
all of a sudden this is n1og andI'm like, oh, dude, this is
awesome.
So you know, gave him crap.
But you know, check it in.
Of course I get a five, five,no matter what.
It's always a freaking five,five.
But you know, we'll talk aboutthat a little bit later listen,

(27:42):
there's nothing wrong with afive five.
Yes, there is I thought I was alittle bit higher in your
friendship.
You know circle where I youknow.
Hey, even if I was a two, two,I still get a five, eight it has
nothing to do with friendship.

Speaker 3 (27:55):
It's about giving an honest signal report.

Speaker 1 (27:58):
I don't want how you sound I want you to lie to me
and tell me I sound wonderfullike come on, all right, becky.
Exactly very true, right, honest, come on, be honest,
anyway, no, all right.
Well, good on that one man.
It was awesome to hear that youwere on the air and making some
good contacts.
And good to chat up with chris, because I've been chit-chatting
with him back and forth onyoutuber stuff and it's kind of

(28:21):
funny.
Like I'll mention something,he'll be like yeah, paul,
already talked about that.
I'm like yeah, I know, Ifigured.
So I mean him and I, you know,we think the same, along the
same lines.
So it's all good, so cool.

Speaker 2 (28:30):
All right, todd, any, uh, any ham radio well, I
lugged all my POTUS shit toFlorida and back.

Speaker 1 (28:40):
You took it for a ride.

Speaker 2 (28:41):
Yeah, so, yeah, you can elaborate, I was gonna.
So I had to go down to Floridafor a day.
I left Sunday night, supposedto get in at 11.
Was gonna go see this kid earlyin the morning and then I was
gonna go activate this cool parkthat I found online, and it all

(29:02):
got fucked up because I didn'tget to my hotel until four in
the morning, supposed to getthere 11 pm.
Couldn't get a rent a car, thehotel didn't have a shuttle, so
I had to download the Uber app.
Never used Uber.
Used Uber.
Quite a cool program.
I like it.
And um got three hours of sleep.

(29:24):
Rent a car place Doesn't opentill eight.
I was supposed to be on theroad by seven, 30.
Of course, when you get there.
My whole plane was there tryingto get rent a cars because they
were insane, I was in.
And uh.
So I ended up getting to theplace at 10, drove 65 miles one
way, 65 miles back, and by thetime I got back, and I looked at

(29:47):
the time, there was no way Iwas going to activate and make
my plane.
So, grab the quick bike, quickbite to eat.
And uh got on the plane and uhgot the back to baltimore.
That's where the layover was,and as the night before, as I
was sitting in the samerestaurant in the same seat,
eating the same damn thing thatI had the night before the alarm

(30:11):
start, the alerts start goingoff, your flight's been delayed
10 minutes.
Oh, no, 15 minutes, 30 minutes.
I'm like you mother.
I'm like are you freaking, kidding me?
Wow.
So I was supposed to get in at 930 pm and I ended up getting in

(30:33):
at 11 30 pm.
So not too bad.
But again, I was on three hourssleep, three hours of sleep,
and I called my.
I texted my boss.
I said dude, I got an eighto'clock hearing, you're covering
it, I'll be in at 11 and he'smy friend.
So like we've been friends forlike 20 years, and I said all
right, buddy, you got this one,so he goes.

(30:54):
You got to come in, though it'sjust you and me in the office
today.
I said, all right, I'll come in, just going to be in, you're
going to have to cover mymorning shift because I'm not
going to be there.
So, yeah, it was disappointingbecause it wasn't too hot.
It was actually hotter up herein New Hampshire than it was
down there.
They had some storms offshore,so it was kind of cloudy, it

(31:18):
wasn't too humid, it wasn't toohot and it would have been
perfect.
But, um, I had to cap on, I hadto get a three o'clock flight
back and there just wasn't gonnabe enough time.
So I told the worker.
I said you know what?
I had a really great visit downthere and I really like this
kid and you know, and if youwant me to go back down there,
um, I'd be glad to do it for youjust, please, just, give me a
little bit more time schedule itI'm gonna leave like five

(31:43):
o'clock in the morning and comeback the next day at like nine
o'clock at night yeah, yeah, getsome poda in for sure, but uh,
but you know it was itwas, um, you know that I do like
the kid's a nice kid.
She uh, I've seen her before acouple her before a couple of
years, you know a year and ahalf ago and, um, and like I
said, it's it's not a bad tripand she actually will talk to me
and I mean I spent like twohours there and she's becoming

(32:06):
an artist, so I saw a lot of herartwork and so it was a decent
trip.
But I was really disappointedbecause I really wanted to do
this park and I was so mad I waslike I cannot, there wasn't
going to be enough time, likebecause I know myself I would
have been there, I would havebeen like at nine and I'd be
looking at the watch, I'd belike I can get one more, one
more, and then, next thing, youknow, I'd miss my flight and

(32:29):
yeah, I, I had a mental kind oflike uh blockage because I was
looking at polo for a little bitand I thought I was actually on
the spotting page.

Speaker 1 (32:39):
But I was in a log and I saw like your call sign
because I had worked you, andI'm like, holy crap, todd must
be on.
And I'm like wait a minute,that free.
I'm on this frequency right now.
That doesn't make sense, like.
And then I realized oh, I'mlooking at the log and I'm like
no, he's not even on thespotting page.
And that's when you had startedto text me and I was like okay,
forget it so, um tsa, I knowthat we've talked about this in

(33:01):
the past.

Speaker 2 (33:02):
Um, no problems, they didn't even check either way.

Speaker 3 (33:07):
I uh they didn't stick their finger in your bum.
Make sure you weren't smugglingsomething.

Speaker 2 (33:12):
no, I got, I got the pre, so so I just walk right
through, no problems.

Speaker 3 (33:16):
Yeah, you pay extra to not have them fucking harass
you yeah.

Speaker 1 (33:21):
They pre-lubed him and he squeezed right in.

Speaker 2 (33:23):
I'm going to say now, though pre is.
Sometimes the line is longer onpre than it is the regular one,
but the benefits of you don'thave to take your laptop out or
your things, you don't have totake your shoes off or your belt
or anything, and you don't haveto take your laptop out or your
things, you don't have to takeyour shoes off or your belt or
anything, and you don't walkthrough that machine that does
the funky 3d scan.
3d scan.
You just walk through a metaldetector and you grab your shit

(33:45):
and you go.
So, um, so that was cool, but,um, what I did this time is I
flew southwest and I didn't haveto fly those sardine cans,
those little tiny planes.
So I put my poda bag in myroller bag so I wouldn't have to
carry the weight, I could justroll it around.
So the poda backpack was insidemy roller bag.

(34:07):
That I just shoved up in theyou know the, you know the bin,
the overhead, the overhead, yeah.
So that was kind of cool.
And then I just brought alittle.
I brought my little work bag.
I had my, uh, my headphones, mylaptop and my ipad for, uh,
studying and watching shows.
Oh, and one other thing, beforewe forget, I watched a mini

(34:31):
series called zero day, and oh,that's good, you watch that.
It is, yeah, it's good, hamradios in it, it's awesome.

Speaker 1 (34:42):
Yeah, no, I did see that.
That was a short episode, likethat it wasn't really that long.

Speaker 2 (34:47):
It's like a limited series, like four or five
episodes.
It was pretty realistic hamradio wise yeah, well, I didn't
get the whole antennas thatthey're putting on there.

Speaker 3 (34:57):
They put these little down like they hold it out of
the drawer, like there's no waybut yeah, well, and it's got
robert denaro and robert denarolike he's a fuckwad these days
like I know, I I didn't.

Speaker 2 (35:11):
I yeah, he is a total fuckwad, but I gotta give him
he's a good actor.
I I haven't watched a moviethat he hasn't been in that I
haven't liked.
I mean, he does some prettygood movies and uh, yeah, so it
was a movie to recommend orminiseries.
It's on netflix to watch it,but I did have some ham radio
and that was a big part of theuh big part of the story, so it

(35:31):
was pretty cool yep, yeah, I'llgive you that.

Speaker 1 (35:34):
I remember that was one of the things my wife was
like oh, it's got a ham radioand you gotta watch it.
So I watched it.
I was like, okay, I watched it.
Like I started midway throughthe series, like the four parts,
and I was like, all right, Ihave to go back and watch the
other two because I missed likesomething along the way.
And it's like because you, ifyou don't pay attention, you're
just like, you're okay, I lostthe plot line.
So, yeah, that was a goodseries for sure yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (35:54):
So everyone, everyone listening to this, go watch
that movie.
You can get some ham radio.
Uh.

Speaker 1 (35:59):
Promotion in uh if you don't, you, you don't play
able to play your ham radio, watch it or, like Todd, take it
on vacation for a little bit,for a day, and then bring it
back.

Speaker 2 (36:10):
My ham, my um, I hit my eight91, has been all over
this freaking country.
I mean seriously.

Speaker 1 (36:21):
It's been mississippi multiple times, arkansas
multiple times, louisiana, florida, california, maine, you
need to get, like those magnetsor the, the stickers that you
put on, like you know, rvs onyour radio just for every state
you've gone through and you know, only put them on when you
don't activate.

Speaker 2 (36:36):
Yeah, but yeah.
So it was a shitty trip, but itis what it is, so I'll be down
there again.
That kid's not leaving anytimesoon.

Speaker 3 (36:49):
Before we ask Eric about his ham radio week, I
gotta ask you, todd, how manystates have you activated?
Do you know off the top?
Of your head.
Yeah it's, I'm about.

Speaker 2 (37:02):
I want to say I'm like 18 maybe fuck you.
Hold on, let me check for sure.
I don't know.
You don't have more, I've got12, really yeah.

Speaker 1 (37:13):
I thought you would have had more with all of your
travels.

Speaker 3 (37:15):
Man, I actually haven't looked at mine but you
got to take into account that, like a lot of the east coast
traveling up and down the eastcoast, like my wife wasn't into
stopping for ham radio until I Ikind of forced it last year and

(37:38):
she was just a trooper about italright, let's go alright.
Well, while you're lookingthose numbers up, eric, how was
your ham radio week?
I mean, I know you got out to apark dude, I did so.

Speaker 1 (37:57):
I've been, you know, kind of turning up the volume
here on the channel a little bit, trying to get a lot of the
reviews, because I looked at mybacklog and went, holy crap,
I've got like four antennareviews and a bunch of other
stuff.
And then of course I love Matt, matt's the great guy.
He's like, dude, I've got allthis and this and this I'm
sending it to you, and this andthis I'm sending it to you.

(38:18):
And I'm like, okay, fine, sendit.
Dude, I'm not gonna say no.
And so, like he sent me like twoantennas, the 56 to one, a
bunch of uh linked uh dipoles, and like I mean, I got like four
antennas.
And then he sent me the uh two,uh rf chokes, the big one and
the small one.
And I'm like, oh, I like thebig one in the small one.
So of course I'm like like I'mgoing to do that one.
That's an easy, you know lowhanging fruit kind of thing and

(38:40):
you know I could easily just setthem up and they'll either work
or they don't.
It's simple as that.
So, uh, I took the 56, one 56to one antenna with me and you
know I didn't do any priortuning and I was a little bit.
I had to tweak it a little bitjust because it wasn't in the
side.
It was two to one but I wanteda little bit below that for the
sideband portion but it wasn'tthat bad.

(39:01):
You know, I applied the N1 OGafter fussing around with a
little bit to decide that 1.8,1.9 was perfectly fine.
And you know it wouldn't affectthe radio.
It's good enough, yeah exactlyright, and so I was down in
salem mass and I was like I'mgonna go find a park, but I
decided not to activate the parkthat I've been beating my head
against, which is this sagasiron works one.

(39:23):
I have failed the two attemptsthat I've done to that park.
I failed both of them, both bymissing like two contacts.
It's been horrible, and so I'mlike I'm not gonna go there, I'm
gonna go find another park.
So I found another parksomewhere in the middle of um,
oh my gosh, this was more out byum.
Uh, oh my gosh, I just drew theblank where it was revere.

(39:46):
Uh, it was farther out, butit's past lynn, past revere,
kind of more towards um, thecoastal, uh towns, um, I can't
think of it.
Uh, shit, anyway either way.
So I went out to that park andit's a nice little quaint park.
It's in the middle of nowhere, kind of just off a main road, in
like a little flintston area, and I was like, dude, this is a
perfect spot.

(40:06):
I pulled the truck up, I'm likeI'm gonna throw my 10 meter
mast up and I'm gonna run the 56one out.
And it was a nice shaded area.
Drop the, you know, the foldingtable and everything else like
that in the shade, the 56 to 1,you know, basically tied off to
a tree and nobody bothered me.
And I was like, oh, this isgonna be really fun.
All right, camera, what thefuck are you doing?

(40:26):
Um, and so I was like, oh,that's because I'm waving my
hand.
I gotta keep my hands down.
I was like, damn it, handgestures.
Um, and so I was like, allright, cool, we'll just set up.
So I set up the 5601, did alittle tuning to tweak it a
little bit, and then, you know,I did the review and I was just
like, yeah, no, sorry, not gonnaplay that game, I'll fix it
later.
Um, and you know, long storyshort, I was like, oh, cool,

(40:50):
this is nice.
The bands were pretty good.
I the dude, the rf chokes thatmatt creates, they're fucking
awesome.
I can't tell you how much theyknock down.
Like.
I always have a problem, likeif I'm operating a wire in like
a rural area where there'straffic going by, I get all the
alternator wine, I get all oflike that stuff into the radio
as cars go by, or worse off.

(41:11):
There was a chevy in theparking lot.
He turned on the car to turnthe ac on and all I heard was
normal.
I was like I didn't, because Iput the RF choke in and then I
unplugged it and all of a suddenI hear his alternator why.
And I'm like, oh, rf choke backin and no problems, it knocked
the damn thing down.

(41:31):
I was like, dude, this is sweet.
So I texted Matt.
I'm like I'll send them to you.
I'm like, no, I'm going to buythem.
He's like, no, no, I'll sendthem to you.
I'm like, no, I'm going to buythem.
I need to buy them because yousent me way too much free shit.
So, yeah, all that, uh did thatvideo and finally wrap that up.
That'll air tomorrow.
But uh, I don't know, may not,it doesn't really matter.

(41:54):
You know none of us went.
So it really didn't matter.
We don't really have much toadd.
So all good either way.
And yeah, outside of that, Ihad a good weekend and you know
it was.
It was ham radio free for alittle while, even though my
wife kept going you should go tofield day.

(42:15):
You should go to field day.
I'm like, no, I'm not doingfield day this year.
It's not field day this year.
It's not the same.
I don't know we're not havingsteak and whiskey on Fridays and
we're not, you know, hangingout with Paul and you know,
doing the net and you know.
So it was all a littledifferent.
But, all that being said, hey, difference at that point.

Speaker 3 (42:36):
Yeah, I'm good, but uh, which?
Whichever?
Uh, the big one or the smallone?
I, I think they both had bncson them.
So whichever one you, whicheverone you don't want, all right,
just pass it on to me, I'll takethat so, yeah, I've got um matt
sending me another the, theso239 version, because I had

(42:56):
enough connectors.

Speaker 1 (42:56):
But then I was like you know, I told them I didn't
really matter.
But then I'm like I really likeprefer so 239.
So yeah, I'll send you the, theother one.
But the only difference betweenthe big one and the small one
is the big one's 200 watts with100 watt digital, so you can run
100 watts with the larger one,but you can only run 60 watts
with a smaller one.
But dude, that you know 60watts.
You know digital is perfecteither way.

(43:17):
So, yeah, the only thing youknow.
Like I said, after I picked youup excuse me, after I picked you
up on the air, I was just likeI didn't realize you had chris
with you and so, like, whenchris gave me his call sign, it
just like went totally over myhead.
I'm like okay, and I just waslike kind of like, and then,
after like four contacts and Irealized oh, that's Christian

(43:38):
radio life, damn it.
I should have said a lot Like Ijust like totally blew over him
, totally forgot.
I mean, he was pretty goodtrooper with it, but more so.
I was just busy laughing sohard because you're like fuck, I
can.
I was like, all right, we weredoing the split mics.
Oh, you were Okay.

Speaker 3 (43:58):
Yeah, so he had the Yaesu mic and I had the
military-style one, and so Ididn't throw it at him, I just
threw it down on the bench.

Speaker 1 (44:06):
Okay, but yeah, it was good.
It was good to work you.
I mean it was always fun to.
I mean, obviously I get to hearyou when you were your
side-by-side working, but it'salways different.
You know, I meant to ask howwas my audio level, was it okay?

Speaker 3 (44:20):
Yeah, no, you, you actually.
Uh.
So, given the, given the bandconditions, right Cause there
was a lot of QSB, yeah, um, itwas a lot of fading, um, but,
given the, you were easilyreadable but you weren't very
strong, that's all Okay.

Speaker 1 (44:41):
So the other thing is , when I borrowed the frequency
from you guys, I thought I gotliquid gold, but I got shit on.
I don't know what it was, butyou must have had two guys that
were running high power, liketwo kilohertz down and another
guy a kilohertz or two up.
Because once I said hey, whenyou said here, here, here's the
frequency, you're all goodstarted calling cq, I had like

(45:01):
people calling me and go, dude,I can't get here.
I got too many qrm, qrms in theway, qrm, qrm, and I'm like,
and then all of a sudden thehigh powered station would blow
over another you know low power, you know you know qrp station
and I'm like, all right, I'mdone with this.
Guys, i'm'm QSY to a higher, quieter section of the band,
because I just couldn't handleit.
I was getting beat up all thetime and somehow there were it
must've been another POTUSstation on there, I don't know

(45:22):
how he like he would come in andhe would be like act, working
people, and then he would goaway and I'm like, dude, you're
on my frequency and and it'd belike dude, what is going on with
the band?
So I was like, okay, I get, Iget it now, it was not as quiet
and quiet as it was, you know, months ago or years ago,
whatever it was.

Speaker 3 (45:42):
But yeah, it was, it was certainly it was.
Uh, it was a struggle and ahalf to get jason, um, and and
the thing was is like I washearing texas stations like very
, very well, you know good, like5.5 To 5.8, and yeah, I don't

(46:03):
know Jason was in Arizona Iswhat he said.
And so, yeah, he was Just, really, just like he'd be down
to the noise and he'd be audible, be like, okay, I gotcha, yeah,
yeah, yeah.
And then, you know, I was likeokay, second op, you know, and
For whatever reason, like JasonJust couldn't hear the last

(46:24):
Three letters of the call sign.
And so it got to the point whenI picked up my mic and I was
like, alright, jason, did youget the full Call?
Kilo Delta 9, yankee, sierrawhiskey.
And then he came back and hewas like, oh, all right, yep, I
got it now, yeah.

Speaker 1 (46:44):
It's funny you say that because, like I had the
same similar problem with when Iactivated with Chris whiskey
eight C I'm watching his callsign Sorry, chris, because he we
had the split mics and I can'ttell you.
Like I would get on the mic andI'd be like, yeah, you're a
five, nine, blah, blah, blah.
They're like you're a greatsignal.
And then I passed like chriswould have the other mic and

(47:04):
he'd be like you sound likegarbage.
I don't understand.
Like why, like I can't hear you, you sound muffled and like.
And so, after like the thirdperson confirming that and it
even was like to the point, likethe previous actual contact was
like, hey, dude, you might wantto have his mic looked at
because there's a problem withit, and I'm like, okay, so we
just went back to one mic and Idon't know it was splitter of
the mic or whatever, and yeah,so I felt bad for him because,

(47:27):
like he was working hard to tryto make contacts and I was like
this is a breeze, no problemwell, I'm glad you had a good
ham radio week, man yeah, yeah,it was definitely good.
Same to you, man.
It was good to see on the bandsand, uh, you know, I,
definitely, uh, I I was hopingyou'd get out and activate, not
that I don't want you to jump,but you know it's, it's cheaper

(47:49):
to activate for a little while.
I don't know how the parks arearound you, whether you have to
drive a, a fuck ton, but, um,sounds like you're able to get
out and do some stuff, so that'sgood yeah, I mean.

Speaker 3 (48:01):
So there is, there is parks uh, there's one.
There's a park a half an hourto the west and a park a half an
hour to the east.
Um, you know, and and honestly, like, given given how expensive
skydiving is, right, like I was, I was really like I wanted to
skydive the last couple of weeks.

(48:22):
I wanted to.
I like I really really reallywanted to, but I was like I got
to save my money for theindependence boogie because,
like, I'm going to, I, I, Iguarantee you, between tomorrow
and Sunday, sunday, I'm probablynot going to jump a lot, cause
I guarantee you, betweentomorrow and sunday, sunday, I'm
probably not gonna jump a lot, because I guarantee you I'll be

(48:42):
fucking hung over as shit.
Uh, but really, like, so,thursday, friday, saturday, I'm
I'm gonna get at least 15 to 20jumps in.
Um, so, yeah, it going to be agreat weekend.

Speaker 1 (48:56):
Nice, yeah.
So what was I going to say?
I forgot, dang it.
Oh well, yeah, man Can'tremember.
Shit sometimes settles.

Speaker 3 (49:05):
CRS.

Speaker 1 (49:06):
Yes, totally.
So yeah, my magic number foractivated states is less than
you.

Speaker 2 (49:13):
I've got 15.

Speaker 1 (49:15):
Okay, all right, only 10.
Only 10.
Well, okay, all right, only 10.
Only 10.

Speaker 3 (49:19):
Well, so all right.
So, before I leave here, I gotto get.
I got to get Iowa and Indiana, yeah, cause both of those States
are within a few hours drive,so I definitely got to get both
of those.
And then I'm thinking okay, Iwould have really liked to have,

(49:40):
you know, stopped at a coupleof drop zones on the way to
Huntsville and done someskydiving, but I think, I think
I'm, I'm going to just try andget parks and I'm just going to
try and get a couple of parks.
You know, maybe get toTennessee, missouri, you know,
is everybody wants to get misery, right?

(50:03):
Yep, exactly, everybody wantsmisery.
Just try and get a couple morestates in the book so real quick
question.

Speaker 1 (50:12):
Obviously we want to get into the topic tonight.
But Huntsville, you want togive people a little update?
Not Huntsville, yeah,huntsville I.
You want to give people alittle update?
Uh, not huntsville, yeah,huntsville.
I got that right, right, yeah, okay that is right you want to
give people a little update onthat one so they know what's
going on with you and whereyou're at.

Speaker 3 (50:28):
So, uh, if they're going to be down, that way they
can stop by and say hello uh,yeah, well, absolutely, if
you're going to be down inhuntsville, please, please,
please, come and say hi.
So from the 11th to the 18th, Ihave site number 33 at

(50:51):
Huntsville and it'll be me andWatson until Thursday.
Thursday, chris Bricker isgoing to come, he's going to
stay with me for the rest of theweekend and that and that's
going to be, honestly, it'sgoing to be a great time.
Um friday, we're going to beskydiving, um, there's a whole
lot of really cool thingsplanned uh that are going to be

(51:13):
happening at the campground.
Uh, plus, we're going to bedoing poda and you know whatever
.
So, yeah, um, uh, I've got, uhEric is sending thank you A
whole bunch of uh stickers and,and good you know, hammies and
things to uh to give out.
So, yeah, come see me, I'll,I'll have all the goodies and,

(51:37):
um, you know, I'll berepresenting the live free and
ham down in Huntsville.

Speaker 1 (51:40):
Yep, I won't send you an Ed Dong though.

Speaker 3 (51:46):
Dude, that's the perfect name for that antenna.

Speaker 1 (51:48):
It is Totally.
You missed the, did you?
You didn't catch a hammering atthe clubhouse last night, did
you?
No, oh my gosh, it was a blast.
You can watch it on a replay.
But long story short.
They sent Joe Brett finally twoantennas.
The first one is what we'redubbing as ed dong.
They put in, uh, you know, arubber dong on the end of an

(52:08):
antenna and, and actually Ithink, tunes up.
From what I understand, uh,wrote a whole instruction manual
and then, as a gag, and thenthey sent him an actual, real
atas 120.
So he finally got his atas.

Speaker 3 (52:19):
But yeah, uh, what was it they?
They called the.
Uh, the first one, the, thedick toss 120 the dick toss 120
but, but it's only good for uhtwo meters.
So that's why I was like, well, clearly it's an ed dong exactly
right way better.

Speaker 1 (52:39):
So, yeah, man, I can't tell you how much crap was
flying on the chat that night.
It was like could you keep upwith it?
But cool, all right.
Well, let's, because we aregetting close to you know.
End of time here, because we'regoing to roll over for those
folks that might not know overour live stream shortly after
this.

Speaker 3 (52:58):
So we're kind of the meat of the show is going to be
the next 10 minutes, exactlyright.

Speaker 1 (53:04):
You're going to get a high speed, you know kind of
summary.
So yeah, we kind of you knowpast two episodes, I think we
really quickly kind of justwould let it all fly.
And you know, you kind of gotto see, you know a close and
personal kind of you know sideof Liffrey and Ham that we all,
you know, we all went back andlistened to it, most of us and

(53:24):
and felt like I wasn't too badbut it was good, good content, I
actually liked it.
I wasn't too embarrassed and Iwasn't like, oh my gosh, we're
going to lose a lot of listenersfrom it.
I think we're going to probablygain a lot more.

Speaker 3 (53:34):
I was a little gr than maybe I should have been,
but that's all right.

Speaker 1 (53:38):
You know we might've developed a new segment from
that.
I mean it kind of, you know itsounds like Todd's ready to gear
up on.
You know when to press thebutton.
You know it'd be like one ofthose easy buttons but it'd be
like, you know, activate grouchmode, you know, or not grouch
mode.
So you know that was good andyou know uniformity and

(54:04):
consistency and has likes thehabit of like listening to the
same format where they can feellike it's warm and comfy blanket
.
Yeah, we're going to get backto a little show topic, but with
that we want to kind of talkabout you know our.
You know our live free and ham.
We've been doing this for twoyears, guys.
I mean has been almost a year,about a year and a half.
Right, yeah, you came in abouta year and a half and yeah, I
came in, uh, just afterchristmas okay.
So, yeah, right around that timeand, and todd and I've been,

(54:26):
you know, here for the duration.
Um, you know we can't leave.
It's hotel california, so allgood there.
But, uh, you know, every yearwe kind of like to touch base on
this because there's some goodstuff that you know comes from
it.
You know we kind of share on itand you know, I'm interested to
see what you guys think, because I'm one of those type A
people that I like to kind of doa year in review of my life

(54:47):
every once in a while, just tosee where I'm at, how things are
going.
Did I, you know, get anywhere inmy life or did I just, you know
, chase my tail, do for thefuture?
So, you know, with that let'skind of start.
You know, we'll throw it to you, paul, since you're the young
end of the crew.
Um, you know, and both in ageand you know, uh, you know

(55:07):
longevity in terms of thepodcast here.
But you know, any kind ofthoughts you know you kind of
glean from it.
I don't know what made youthink you wanted to do that or
where it kind of came from, butyou did it, it was cool.
But uh, yeah, you know, share alittle bit.
You know what's your kind ofthoughts with this and you know

(55:28):
what.
What do you really truly feel?

Speaker 3 (55:31):
So all right For me, like all of this was, um, it was
a big door opener, right, um,it was a big door opener, right,
um.
So I'm, I'm a very, uh, kind ofreserved person.
Um, I'm I'm not I wouldn't sayI'm antisocial, um, but I'm, I'm

(55:56):
, I'm, definitely I'm, I'm, asI've gotten older, I've gotten
more socially awkward where, like, I'm, I'm just not sure
like what the right thing to sayor the right questions to ask
when I'm meeting new people and,and so I tend to, I tend to
just kind of isolate and kind ofjust stick to myself.
Um, but this show, actually, ithelped me to break out of that

(56:18):
comfort zone and do somethingcompletely unnatural for me,
Like, I mean, I've, I've donepublic speaking and you know
I've given oratorical speech, contests and things when I was
much younger and, um, you knowmy time, my time leading the VFW
, like I would, I would lead, uh, you know events and you know

(56:40):
public speaking engagements, andso you know, I don't have an
issue with with, you know, speaking with people, um, but
it's just, it's a very differenttype of platform, you know.
And so I I think, honestly, Ithink some of my, my favorite
times um are are the, theunscripted, you know where,

(57:02):
where kind of let loose and justtalk about whatever's on our
mind.
And, honestly, that's whereWeekend Warriors was born from.
It was I was, you know,post-covid, I was used to, you
know, group therapy.

(57:23):
Every week I would go to the VAfor group therapy.
You know, I had an online groupas well, and so I was doing a
lot of interacting with otherveterans where we could just
talk openly about whatever itwas.
It was.
That was our struggle in thatmoment, and and that all kind of

(57:49):
went away after COVID, you'reright.
So, um, with the, with this show, you know, it was like all
right, well, I have this ideaand I, I want to, I want to
bring group therapy to theinterwebs, right, and, and so
that was that was it for me,that was, that was the whole

(58:10):
reason why I started weekendwarriors is, it was my group
therapy on the interwebs, andand and and it's like I said,
it's all because of lift brainham.
So I, I absolutely love hamradio, and and and it's like I
said, it's all because of livebrain ham.
So I, I absolutely love hamradio, and and all of that.
Um, but there's a lot of thingsthat, like, are are important to

(58:31):
me that just aren't reallyrelevant to this show, um, and
so that's where, yeah, that'swhere I kind of broke off with
that Um and and I'm long overduefor podcast recording with that
, because I've just been so busywith everything that's going on
in my own life and those thingshappen right.

(58:51):
But yeah, so I just want to sayI'm very grateful that you guys
decided to bring me on.
I'm very grateful that you guysdecided to bring me on.
I know there are definitelytimes where I'm like I don't
know what exactly I bring tothis show other than, you know,
a sense of humor, comedic reliefyes.

(59:13):
You know, but like I mean, I'mjust, I'm a dumb grunt, I'm
always trying to learn newthings.
There's so much in ham radiothat's just way over my freaking
head.
Actually 45 Auto.
If anybody's been in the hamtuber chats on any of the live
streams, you're familiar with 45Auto.

(59:36):
But we were in the chat on aNuggets episode on Monday night
and he made the comment he saiddude, every time you guys start
talking Computers, it's justblah, blah, blah, blah, blah and
it's just over my fucking head.
And I'm like, dude, I am withyou, me too.

(59:57):
The whole reason I watch NuggetsIs because it's just so far
over my fricking head.
Like I have no clue what thefuck they're talking about, but
I'm, I don't know, I'm learningsomething and so I hope, uh, you
know, like we also kind ofprovide the same type of you
know thing for people, like ifthere's something that we're

(01:00:19):
talking about that's over yourhead, like please let us know
and we can further explain.
Uh, because I think honestly, uhthat that a lot of people are,
um, they're hesitant to say likeholy shit, I don't understand
what the fuck you're talkingabout, right, and but like, if
you don't say something, thenlike the people putting on the

(01:00:42):
show aren't going to know thatthey need to kind of dumb it
down and and give you that, youknow, uh, third grade
explanation as opposed to youknow the, the college calculus
fucking level, yeah, um, butyeah, so I mean, for me, like,
honestly, I I'm just, I'm, I'mvery happy, I'm very proud to be
a member of of the live, freeand ham podcast and and I I hope

(01:01:10):
that, uh, you know, two yearsis just the beginning and we
look back, you know, 15 yearsfrom now, we're like here.
Remember when I had only beenhere for a little while and 15,
number.

Speaker 1 (01:01:20):
Does that look like for you, todd?
That's like uh 67, I think youknow.

Speaker 2 (01:01:25):
That puts me at like yeah, yeah, I'll be 65 gone by
then you can just fall off theplanet I might just be dead.
It's my luck.
I'm gonna retire at 60 and thenI'm gonna freaking probably die
the next day.
That that's the way my luckgoes, oh man.
But no, I mean, I agree withyou.
I mean it's I.
I mean, I think what Eric and Italked about this he had.

(01:01:47):
He already had a podcast.
I said, oh, this would be kindof cool.
I didn't really know reallyanything about it and I still
don't know as much.
I'm hoping that that I'll beable to get more involved in how
to create it and get on OBS andbe able to plug things in like
you guys do.
Technology I love to usetechnology.

(01:02:10):
I have no idea how it works andI'm kind of a computer idiot,
but if it works I'm good at it,I know how to use it and I do
like it, uh.
But you know, I, I think thepodcast has been good.
I mean I can't believe we'vebeen.
What are we?
This is what.
Two years now, two yearsalready, yeah, that's crazy.
Like it doesn't seem that long.
Um, but like you, I mean I, Ilike the.

(01:02:35):
I think the first one we did waswhen Eric I think you were away
and Paul and I just kind of waslike what are we going to do?
Like we'll just shoot the shit.
We went on for like three hours.
You figured it out.
You figured it out.
But I love the live streams.
I think that is ultimately myfavorite part of doing the thing
, especially when we get peoplecoming in and coming out and
just interacting and just kindof seeing where it goes.

(01:02:57):
I do love the interviews.
The Hillbilly group that was myfavorite podcast.
I think I love those guys.
Like I'm seriously, like I'mlike I almost got down.
You know, in May there was thatnew airline flying out of
Manchester Airport.
It was $25 to Wilmington eachway.
So I was like shit, $50?

(01:03:17):
You got to go, dude.
Well, it's not that anymore.

Speaker 3 (01:03:26):
It was so I was like shit, you're gonna go dude.

Speaker 2 (01:03:27):
Well, it's not that anymore.
It was in may, so but I waslike I was gonna say, reach out
to shannon and sean and see if,like now, they live on the other
side of north carolina.
But for me, like, I don't givea shit if I have to drive four
hours or three hours or whatever.
I mean that's nothing.
So so, yeah, I'm looking to goback down.
I love north carolina.
I've uh, we Now we have somefamily down there and I would
love to go down there and justhook up with them, do an upload

(01:03:47):
activation.
But I had a lot of fun withthose guys.
I thought they were really cool.
I love the way their clubdeveloped and how they're out
there doing stuff and, like allour guests I mean there hasn't
been one guest I've been like,oh, I wish they weren't on the,
on the podcast.
They've all been awesome, um,and we've all got our favorite.

(01:04:07):
We do, yeah, I mean, look atthe hillbillies, they're my
favorite.
I mean I look at I.
I feel like I could connectwith them, like I'd go down
there and hang with those guys.
We'd be all right, um, anyway.
So, uh, because, yeah, that'skind of where I'm at and you
know, and it was funny because, eric, you know, ryan said he
didn't want to we decided thatwe were going to go on to um

(01:04:28):
live video, do youtube, and andhe was kind of hesitant, he
didn't.
I mean, he did a few of them, Ithink, and with all his flying
and stuff, and when we startedwe were only doing it what?
Once every two weeks every twoweeks.
Yeah right, yeah, now, look atus, my god yeah, so now it's
like we're doing it every weekand uh you know I just think it

(01:04:49):
was just too much for him, withhis flying and his schedule not
being consistent.
So you know he kind of backedaway still part of the podcast
and you know he gives us hisinput and and stuff and you know
he'll always be part of thepodcast, so um and and then
eric's like so uh, what do youthink of paul joining in?

(01:05:09):
I'm like cool, yeah, bring himon next.

Speaker 1 (01:05:14):
Well, I think really, I think todd was really nervous
because it would just been himand I and the thing would have
been totally like you know, inthe tank after a week.

Speaker 2 (01:05:22):
Yeah, I'm like, yeah, that'd be awesome.

Speaker 1 (01:05:25):
Yeah, there's Ryan.
That's a winter field day, ryan.
Yes.

Speaker 2 (01:05:29):
So you know, and it's kind of, it's kind of cool
because all of us all met orhave a connection to POTA.
So when, when Eric and I firstmet ryan, we were doing a poda
activation at silver lake, hepulled up parks on the air.
Eric, I think you had met himbefore or something, didn't you?

Speaker 1 (01:05:49):
maybe yeah, ryan and I kind of bumped across each
other's paths a little.

Speaker 2 (01:05:52):
We got him, and then you know, paul, you, me and eric
, I did that.
I got my general did the firstpoda.
Then we met at at uh, the railtrail and you and I were there
first like, did you bringanything?
He was nope, I didn't bringanything.
Like hope, eric brought stuff, like he knows what he's doing,
and and then I love that picturewe have of the three of us
sitting there activating thatpark for the first time and it's

(01:06:15):
just been, it's been a lot offun and it's uh, I think the
podcast is just it's a goodconnection for fun and it's a.
I think the podcast is justit's a good connection for us
and even though you're out Westand our off difference, I mean
we still getting together everyweek and shooting a shit and you
know, doing the podcast andlearning about your.
I've learned a lot aboutskydiving.

Speaker 3 (01:06:34):
So it's not as easy as you would think.

Speaker 2 (01:06:40):
And you fly around and you pull the thing and
you're done so.
But yeah, it's been kind ofcool and you scream all the way
down.

Speaker 1 (01:06:46):
You forgot that part.

Speaker 2 (01:06:49):
But you know how, you know how, like, like AI or your
phone's listening or whatever.
So, like I start getting allthese, these parachute videos
right, one after another.
It keeps popping up, like.
So I said I sent him one, Isaid you got to check out I know
you don't do facebook, butcheck out this guy.
This guy is like awesome in theair and I wouldn't have
appreciated it until we talkedabout it and we watched the

(01:07:11):
videos of paul struggling justto stay straight, right, and
then he had to go.
Right, you went to chicago todo the wind tunnel or whatever.
So when you're watching that,if you didn't, if we didn't have
that conversation or that youdidn't have that experience, I
would have been like, oh yeah, that guy's, yeah, he can do
stupid shit in the air.
But then to appreciate how hardthat is, based on what I know,

(01:07:34):
what you went through, so uh, soyeah, I mean we've had a lot of
and I think the show goes whereit goes.
Uh, I love the fact that it'snot.
You know, we were talking like, what's the show going to be
about?
Is it going to be just aboutPOTA?
Is it just going to be likewhat are we going to do and our
show, I think, is just aboutfreaking everything and anything
, and sometimes it's not evenabout ham radio, and I think
that's all right because noteverything is ham radio.

(01:07:57):
But you know it is a lot andit's the basis of it.
But I think there's otherinterests that we all have and
you know it's been good and I'mglad we have a following.
I think it's kind of cool thatpeople listen to us and I
appreciate that the peoplelisten to us and that whatever
we're saying or doing is helpingwhoever you know either be
interested in ham radio or orget motivated to upgrade or just

(01:08:21):
listen to our shenanigans so I,I, you know we're getting close
to the top of the hour here, sowe're just kind of wrap things
up.

Speaker 1 (01:08:28):
But uh, yeah, so just I, I got a couple of stats I
want to share with you guysbecause I think they're really
cool, kind of like milestonethings.
But I, I, you know, I, I haveto say I, I would not want to do
this show with anybody elseexcept you guys.
It's just, we have a bond, wehave a connection.
I know, dude, like aw, but it'sfunny you say that because I

(01:08:49):
could get all sappy and I'mgoing to.
But bottom line is, I see a lotof people they'll come up to me
like, dude, I really love yourshow and I'm like, well, it's
not really my show, it's all ofus.
And they're like, oh, I know, but like your chemistry is like,
so like you guys just play offeach other and you know how like
it's not like you're, you'repushing an agenda, you're not
like trying to like get throughsomething, you just like let it
fly and it all works together.

(01:09:10):
I'm like, yeah, I know, butthat's because I trust these
guys, I radio and and we doother things outside of this
podcast.
So I think that makes us thatmuch, you know sweeter for you
know, and being attracted toother people.
But yeah, so are you guys readyfor a few little stats here?
All right, so all right, firstone.

(01:09:31):
So when we first started theshow, it was june 5th 2023.
That was our first episode.
So if you are a listener andyou want to go back in the
catalog, this is show episode.
120 words per minute, with thehacksaw blade and a nail that
one.
I went back and listened to it.
I went what the hell were wedoing, man?
I was like holy crap, you know, and so that I think that was

(01:09:52):
kind of the milestone.
So we're a little bit past that.
Now we're in july, but you knowthat we're not too bad.
I mean, we literally launchedit, you know, before field
day're we're not too bad.
I mean we literally launched it, you know, before field day,
which was kind of surprising.
But you know, it kind of startedeverything and kick things off
and we started doing livestreams and doing all this crazy
YouTube shit that we were likeI don't know what the hell I'm
doing, you know.
And then I'm like Paul, you'regoing to go do this crazy

(01:10:12):
YouTube shit and he's like, dude, what are you doing?
And and then, uh, you know thebig thing, when we first kind of
like got our name out remember, todd, you could probably
remember this because paul hadjoined in yet we went to ham
expo.
They invited us to come be abooth there and, my god, that
was a train wreck.
That was a train wreck.

(01:10:32):
But uh, yeah, we had some coolguests on.
We, we figured out what weneeded to do.
People are like who's this livefree?
And ham, and we're like, here, here's a sticker, please, please
, listen to our podcast.
You know, and it's like youknow, everyone was like, okay,
cool.
And you know, and that was like, you know, I think we hit like a
hundred, you know hundred,downloads.
We're like 100 downloads,nothing.
Yeah, okay, whatever, this isreally okay.

(01:10:54):
We gotta create more contentnow.
Um, and then one of our I thinkone of my big fun episodes was
when, uh, paul, your start datewas December 4th 2023.
That's when you joined us.
So, um, yeah, you've been all.
I mean, literally, I have to say, dude, I've never met anybody.
Just like, okay, I'm just goingto dive in headfirst.

(01:11:16):
You know, empty pool, whatever.
Let's just go do it.
You know, let's figure it out.
And I, you know, empty pool, whatever, let's just go do it.
You know, let's figure it out.
And you know you say you're notfreaking technical, but
freaking a.
You throw like a bunch of wiresand like a bunch of pcb boards
and you tell them, go build acomputer.
And paul's like, oh, I got acomputer here and you know it
can calculate, uh, you know thelatest, uh, you know physics
equation to solve world hunger.

(01:11:37):
Whatever, paul's already got itdone.
Don't, don't let him fool youguys.
Paul is one of those guys thatyou know.
You give him a task and he'llfucking do it, like you know, 10
times way better than what youcould ever imagine.
So you know that he, he keepsthe show running, he keeps me in
line and I'm fricking in aprofessional in it and I'm like.
You know, I'm like.
So you feel inadequate.

Speaker 2 (01:11:59):
I do too trust me when bs works well, that's why I
was like, oh, why do we needobs?
I'm like I don't need it.
I get out here and you guyswell, if you want to do all the
fun shit like pushing buttons, and yeah right, oh yeah, I don't
get to do that and so we had acouple of other things like you
want to see my ham radio?

Speaker 1 (01:12:16):
no, no, I love we got to figure out how to put that
in our shirt.
So we were like totallyecstatic.
29th of March we hit 2,500downloads and that was 11 months
in the show and that was likeunheard of.
And the only reason why it wasunheard of?
Because my previous podcast Ihad done with a bunch of guys
that I had been, you know, friends with for 30 years.
We barely hit a hundreddownloads after four years of

(01:12:38):
doing it at the start of covidand by the time we decided that
we're done with it we barely hadlike 100 subscribers.
So that was like, you know, agut sucking, you know trying to
like create content and and wejust kind of just recorded, hit
the button and did whatever andthat was like every episode
every week.
And so you know, I give itcredit to you guys.
You can just come to the tableand bring shit, well, you can't.

Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
I remember you were telling me I'm like, how are we
doing?
Because, like, the numbers tome didn't mean anything.
I'm like I don't know if it'sgood or bad.
And he's like, dude, he goes.
We are like way ahead of wherewe're supposed to be.
This is amazing and I was like, really, 2500 was a big mark.

Speaker 1 (01:13:13):
so and then, shortly after that that's where you know
paul's uh, you know man crushand Todd you.
You know you kind of follow.
That's where you know we endedup having did Paul freeze, did
Paul freeze?
Yeah, that's his starry eyedaydream face, damn damn Elon.
So yeah, paul's, as he'srecovering here.

(01:13:35):
That's where we met.
We met Katie nine oil, and nowis Katie nine, oh L, you know
carlos, and that started thiswhole journey with paul.
There we go, he's back fromelon's.
Uh, you know grasp I heard.

Speaker 3 (01:13:50):
I heard kd9 oln.

Speaker 1 (01:13:52):
Uh, it's k9 ol it is now, but at the time he was kd9
ol later after that, so hechanged.
Yeah, he was all in when webrought him on, but then he got
his call shortly after that, sohe changed his call.
Yeah, he was OLN when we broughthim on, but then he got his
call shortly after that, so Imade sure, yeah, kiel and I are
Oscar Lehman now yep, yep, andso he came on and that's what
started the whole, you know, Iwouldn't say downward spiral, it

(01:14:15):
was kind of more just, you know, just jump and figure out how
it goes, kind of attitude withstop moving camera.
I'm not signaling you to doanything, um, you know.
And so that started the wholeprocess there yes, by far.

Speaker 2 (01:14:28):
That is the episode that I talk about the most my
man crush with carlos right andhe, almost he like, challenged
you and you're like bring it on,I'm doing this, that's
basically, and after that it wasall over yep.

Speaker 1 (01:14:43):
And then you know the other big thing.
We had a bunch of other stuffin there.
We hit a couple of 5 000downloads.
But the one thing I thought was, like our big, we finally got
our first patreon subscriber.
We were jumping up and downlike why is someone paying for
our show?
And I, we dude paul says it allthe time.
I I try to remember all thetime.
We love our, our Patreonsubscribers.
We love the people who evenlisten to our show for free.
You know, we thank you guys forsupporting us.

(01:15:04):
But, dude, it's just weird tohave someone say, hey, I like
your content, I'm going to payyou for it.

Speaker 3 (01:15:11):
Yeah, so yeah, I just think it's, but it makes me
feel good.
Honestly it does.
I mean, even if it's a dollar amonth or $2 a month, just the
fact that somebody's willing togive a cup of coffee every month
to us, that's huge.

Speaker 1 (01:15:30):
Well, it's not a cup of coffee anymore.
These days, I don't know whatcup of coffee you're buying.
I know you're making it at home.
The last time I paid four bucksfor mine, you're barely getting
the grains.
Yeah, I don't.
I don't buy coffee out, so, no,you don't.
Okay, I guess the last one wethrew in here was when we
finally hit um, well, actuallythe last two, I know we

(01:15:50):
obviously todd mentioned thiswhere we had the hillbilly ham
radio guys on.
That was a blast, those guys,we love them.
You know we want to continue todo more with you guys.
So, uh, you know again, thankyou for all the swag we haven't.
I might put it on the livestream, just to you know, tease
these guys with it, because Ihaven't given todd his yes and
and the care package is comingto you, man, so you know it's

(01:16:10):
coming soon.
We'll have to talk offline.
I gotta get you some otherstuff.
Um, oh, you didn't send italready.
I haven't said it yet, so I'mgonna send okay, say okay, it's
going, you know, pretty quick.
So we'll talk about what I haveto get, yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:16:23):
I may have you send it to the drop zone instead,
then, okay.

Speaker 1 (01:16:26):
Yeah, the only reason why?
Because Matt's holding stuff uphe wants me to send.
He's sending a whole bunch ofstuff for you.
So I, like Matt, you got canget it to Paul.

Speaker 3 (01:16:38):
Yeah, Huntsville's going to be here before you know
it.

Speaker 1 (01:16:40):
Yeah, exactly, all right.
And then last one is when wehit 10,000 downloads in May, so
May 3rd 2025 was our big, bigmilestone.

Speaker 2 (01:16:49):
And right now we're at 12.1.
12, yeah, and the other thingis, if you look at the graph
that I can see it shows.
If you do do all time we havebasically just been going up and
, uh, last last month or may wehad 948 downloads and this in

(01:17:11):
june we had 935.
Now the only reason june isactually should be more than
because in may we had the livestream plus an extra monday show
.
We had four mondays.
So even though it's a littlebit lower this month, we didn't
have one extra monday.
So I'm hoping that we get up toa thousand uh downloads in a

(01:17:35):
month.
That would be kind of so we'regetting there.
So even though we went down injune a little bit, it's really
not because there was an extramonday and that's when we drop
our podcast and that's where weget the most downloads.
So it had one less and we wereat 9 35 last month, so that's
pretty cool nice job, yeah, andwe thank all of us for that.

Speaker 1 (01:17:54):
I mean, you guys make the show and we just kind of
get together and, you know, talkabout stuff and you guys like
it, so you know it's all good.
So, yeah, we could talk forhours, but I want to, you know,
kind of cut us short herebecause we're really bumping up
against our live stream.
So you know, you guys are goingto get double episodes.
Obviously, once, uh, you know, this episode rolls, our live

(01:18:16):
stream is going to be obviously,uh, you know, in a podcast form
tomorrow.
Um, so you know you'll get thatpodcast first and then you'll
get this episode.
So you'll kind of have to makethe connections in your head
after.
But, all that being said, let'sget to the finals here.
So again, we all thank you guysfor being part of the live free
and ham community.
Without you guys, we would justbe talking to ourselves and I
don't know about you.

(01:18:36):
I, you know, I I don't want tohear my voice as much as I have
to hear my voice a lot of times.
So we all appreciate that.
We all thank you guys forsupporting us being part of the
community and we're lookingforward to some awesome stuff,
uh going on this year and in themany 15 years to come.
As todd said, 15 years of thenumber, so that's a magic number
.
We'll see where we go fromthere.

(01:18:57):
15 years, yeah, 15, 15.
So with that you have plenty oftime, but you can always head
over our discord server, join inthat conversation, be part of
the community there.
We'd love to meet you, love tohear more.
You know, share a bunch ofstuff.
There's awesome channels goingon, duff many conversations.
Um, you can always subscribe toour youtube channel if you
haven't already.

(01:19:17):
Make sure you're part of our uhbell so you're part of all of
our live stream notificationsand other recordings.
Please, you know, feel free toleave us an SMS, you know
message, or you can use our978-233-1142 number.
Leave us a voicemail.
We want to hear from you guys.
You know.
We want to see how you know, how you know and what you guys
like about the show.

(01:19:37):
Maybe you got some things youwant us to talk about.
You know, feel free.
And if you got a great topic,we got a topic over in our
channel or discord that you canleave.
We're always looking to, youknow.
Try to find stuff that you guyswant you know that you're
interested in that we can talkabout.
So with that, you can alwayshead over to live free and
hamcom to learn about the show, check out our layer swag and
find out all about us and thehosts and the show.

(01:20:00):
And with that, thanks again forlistening, as always, and
looking forward to the rest ofthe 2025 year and in the future.
With that we'll say seven, three, seven, three, seven,
