There's nothing in the mail.
No one sent me mail again thisweek.
I don't even.
We shouldn't even do this partof the show.
No one sends me anything Likewhat's the point?
You keep asking me Nope, nothing in the mailbag.
So, uh, no one to tell you.
Uh, no, to tell you.
All right, well, we haven'tmade it big yet.

the uh, the first actual segmentof the show, then doing good,
good, good, that's good, good.
We'll jump into the firstactual segment of the show, then
Doing good, good, doing goodyou do, that's good.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Do good, do good,
you're doing good, good, good,
good, good Good.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Absolutely, I do Good
.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Good, I'm doing good,
bob, doing real good.
Right now, my only outlet is myham radio, all right.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
What do?
All right.
What do we got?
Doing good All right.
We all aspire to do good in hamradio, whether it's assisting
during a natural disaster,providing communications for a
local road race or hosting aPOTA meetup.
We all love to participate inham radio activities.
However, sometimes negativevoices do overshadow our
enjoyment.
So I raise my fist and saybring on the good ideas.
(06:09):
You can share your story withus.
And so I did get one in the winlink by our our usual win link
contributor, mr N2MAK Mike, andso the subject is usual WinLink.
Contributor Mr N2MAK Mike, andso the subject is Whiskey to
(06:30):
Alpha, do Good, and he writesHappy WinLink Wednesday.
Here's a nugget of joy to shareon the upcoming Do Good section
of the podcast.
From April 2nd to the 8th, Ijoined more than 200 other
amateur radio operators fromacross the globe for World
(06:52):
Autism Awareness or AcceptanceWeek.
It was a joy and a privilege tooperate with the special event.
Call sign Whiskey 2 Alpha.
I have a family member who is anon-verbal autistic, which is
why I participated in this eventlast year and this year.
While the stats aren't in yetfor 2025, in 2024 there was 17
(07:16):
129 cusos logged, spanning 146countries.
Wow.
Every one of those contactshelps raise awareness and some
even turn into longer CUSOs whenit is with someone who is
autistic or has someone close tothem who is he continues.
(07:37):
While I was only able tocontribute 174 contacts this
year only 174, I made it a pointto have 174 contacts this year
Only 174.
I made it a point to have funand continue to do something
different.
Among the activations that Idid as Whiskey2Alpha, I was a
(07:59):
2-meter FM poda that Ilive-streamed on YouTube while
wearing the POTA bow tie.
I always like to show that hamradio is fun and it's okay to be
different, which is animportant theme for the W2A
event.
During that POTA I even got afew two meter FM park to park
(08:20):
contacts.
And no, they weren't from thesame park.
It's a good thing he clarified, cause I was going to be like
yeah, I mean you just simplexeach other.
So he wraps it up and he saysit just goes to show that we, we
can encourage others, we canhave fun and we can do good.
(08:41):
Keep up the great work on thepodcast and I'll catch you on
the air or online soon.
73 signed Mike N2MAK.
And then there's a post script.
He wrote PS.
This was sent with the Relianceantennas 9 to 1 and fed half
wave on 12 meter VARA HF forwork band Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
There you go.
That's awesome.
Yeah, that's awesome.
That's a cool.
That's a cool event.
I'd like to get onto that.
I think I I work with a kid nowcurrently that has autism.
I've worked with kids withautism my whole career and I
actually have a one on on mybaseball team is a second.
I coached him when he was inminors, maybe, and t-ball and um
(09:31):
.
I've coached him now twice inthe majors and uh, yeah, he hit
the farthest ball.
Uh, yes, the other day, and our, our rec team had a nice line
drive in the center field and uh, he, uh, he couldn't hit with a
aluminum bat, so he wanted totry a wooden bat and he had a
wooden bat and he always putsthe ball in play with the wooden
bat.
So I think it's because thehandle of the wooden bat is
(09:55):
thicker than the ones of the,the metal bats.
I think he likes that better.
I don't know, but anyway, he'smy boy, he does a good job and
he can play anywhere.
So he, uh, but, yeah, and thenI, we, actually we have a guy,
nick, who I've known since hewas like, I don't know, 15 or 16
, I think he's 18 now, 18, 19,um, but he's autistic and he
(10:19):
flies with us and, uh, he's areally good flyer and yeah, for
that.
Uh, who was that guy that said,oh, todd doesn't talk about?
This is the first episode.
Todd didn't talk about hisflying club.
I'm gonna make it a point nowto bring it up every single time
.
Um, but yeah, but nick, yeah,he's awesome.
He, uh, he'll call me up everyonce in a while and, uh, he's a
(10:40):
very smart young man and he, hehas a heart of gold and he does
amazing things with these modelairplanes.
And when he flies he scares thecrap out of me because it looks
like he's out of control, buthe is very in control.
It just kind of scares me.
Sometimes he comes in too hardor comes at you too quickly.
(11:01):
I'm like, oh, nick, don'tforget, we have a flight line,
yeah, todd.
Or comes at you too quickly.
I'm like, oh, nick, don't,don't forget, we have a flight
line.
Oh, yeah, todd.
But when he was little or whenhe's younger, he used to just be
flying.
Then he'd turn around.
He'd be like, mom, look at me,look at me.
And I'm like, dude, watch theplane.
You can't keep your eyes offthe plane.
So he does much better now, butuh, but yeah, but yeah, that's
awesome, great, uh, great eventand worldwide.
(11:24):
And what they say 17 000 yeah, last year.
Yeah, that's crazy, that'sawesome, great event worldwide.
And would they say 17,000?
Yeah, last year?
Yeah, that's crazy, that's alot of contacts, sure is.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
Sweet.
So thanks for sending that in,mike.
And if you want to be like Mike, please send us your do-good
story.
You can go to livefreeandhamcom, forward, slash do-good and use
the form.
You can send it to us via Gmailat livefreeandham, at gmailcom.
(11:56):
You can also be like Mike andyou can send me N1OG, a win link
, and I'll be glad to read it onthe next, the next episode.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
And now we're going
to get Mike back on.
He earns another live free andhim episode.
We should have had him ontonight and replace Eric.
Eric might be out of a job.
Mike comes in, takes over.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
It'll then be, you
know, live free and ham with a
New Yorker, yeah, live free andham with a New Yorker.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
He's not a, he's like
a.
You know there's a differencebetween an upstate New Yorker
and a city New Yorker People.
Upstate they're good, it'sthose city folk.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
So let's Dive into
everybody's Favorite segment.
It is everyone's Favoritesegment, and now A little
something extra.
Yes, it is everyone's favoritesegment, and now a little
(13:16):
something extra with Todd W1STJ.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
That's a new intro
huh, I like it.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
Everyone's favorite
segment.
Yes, you've heard it here.
This is where we help toddstudy for his extra class
license.
In each episode, uh, I pickthree questions from the extra
class question pool at random,uh, to test his knowledge,
hoping that he gets his upgrade.
If you would like to followalong, you can head over to
(13:48):
hamstudyorg, which is a greatresource to help you prepare for
your test and is recommended byfour out of four volunteer
examiners, because volunteerexaminers' opinions are the only
opinions that matter.
So, without delay, let mechange the views and get things
(14:11):
situated.
Always click the wrong one.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
What?
This isn't the question youwanted me to have.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
No, no, no, it is I,
I clicked, I clicked the the,
the wrong display.
Oh yeah, there you go, you wereyou were gone back.
Yeah, there you go all right, and, uh, I should.
I should have the uh, the soundeffect for you, so we should be
good here, all right, questionnumber one of the evening what
(14:49):
is the relationship between theac current through a capacitor
and the voltage across acapacitor?
Is it a voltage and current?
Are 180 degrees?
Out of phase B, current leadsvoltage by 90 degrees.
(15:12):
C Voltage leads current by 90degrees or D.
Speaker 2 (15:24):
Voltage and current
are in phase.
Alright, paul, I'm going to go.
I think this one is A Voltageand current are 180 degrees out
of phase.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
Oh, the correct
answer is B.
Current leads the voltage by 90degrees.
So, helpful way to remember Elithe Iceman.
In a capacitor, the symbol Ccurrent leads voltage E by 90
(16:08):
degrees.
In an inductor symbol L voltageE leads current I by 90 degrees
.
Another helpful way to rememberthis is capacitor and current
both start with the C and forthe inductor it is opposite from
the capacitor.
So to understand what ishappening.
Consider an unchanged capacitorthat has no voltage across it.
(16:32):
The voltage appears as thecharge flows into the capacitor,
so therefore current leads.
The voltage Inductors actopposite.
As a change in voltage changesthe current flow, or voltage
leads the current.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
Go back to the
question again.
Do you want to see something?
Speaker 1 (16:52):
Okay, okay, got it
question number two how much
does increasing a receiver'sbandwidth from?
Is it A 5 dB, b 3 dB, c 13 dBor D 10 dB?
(17:32):
Go with B withb and c is not agood night is it d no, not d
(17:55):
either.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
How about a?
Speaker 1 (18:00):
it's c.
I thought it was a, but I alsohad it wrong.
So there you go.
Correct answer is C, 13.
So the receiver noise floorincreases directly with
increased receiver bandwidth, since a wider bandwidth allows
for proportionally morebackground noise in the receiver
, more background noise into thereceiver.
This becomes a log calculationof the dB change from 50 Hz to
(18:25):
1000 Hz as follows and so thereyou've got your formula 10 log
times 100 Hz over 50 Hz equals10 log.
20 equals 13.01 dB.
Alright, you're 0 for 2.
So far At least, we're notgetting a song.
(18:47):
Here's the Redeemer question.
The third and final question ofthe evening what could be the
cause of local AM broadcast bandsignals combining to generate
spurious signals on the MF or HFbands?
Is it A your station receiverIF amplifier stage is overloaded
(19:12):
.
B you are receiving skywavesignals from a distant station.
C One or more of the broadcaststations is transmitting an
over-modulated signal, or is it?
Speaker 2 (19:38):
D.
Nearby corroded metalconnections are mixing and
re-radiating the broadcastsignal.
You know, I think I remember Ithink I had this one recently.
I'm gonna, is it D?
I think it's D.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
It is D.
D is the correct answer.
Yes, Good.
So strong AM signals, Such asthose from local broadcast
stations, Can be detected ormixed by any kind of non-linear
junction, from a diode to even arusty bolt, much like the
old-school cat's whiskerdetector.
(20:12):
Broadcast stations areregularly monitored and would
notice any kind of abnormaltransmission, so a mistake on
their part is highly unlikely.
But your silly hint here AMmusic.
Look for answers with a metalband, aka Metallica.
Speaker 2 (20:37):
All right.
Well, I'm not a total loser.
I got a one out of three.
Speaker 1 (20:41):
You got one out of
three, not too bad.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
Still not passing.
I've been stuck on.
I'm getting 29 almost everytime I take the test.
So five in a row 29.
And it's after I take the test.
I go through the ones I gotwrong I review.
Then I look at the section Ineed the most help in.
I review that one I wrong, Ireview.
Then I look at the section Ineed the most help in.
I review that one.
I take the test again.
I get 29.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
So I'm in a rut.
Well, you'll get out of it.
So if you recently receivedyour license or upgrade, please
let us know.
I love to give props to thepeople who are newly licensed or
have just upgraded, and so, uh,yes, please let us know and we
(21:27):
will recognize you on the nextepisode for all of your hard
work and your effort.
Please send us an email at livefree and ham at gmailcom and we
will definitely mention you onthe next show.
Um, there was there.
Definitely mention you on thenext show.
There was.
I don't think there has been acall sign issued yet.
However, on Friday, I believeit was, we did a kind of
(21:51):
impromptu clubhouse testingsession where we tested one XYL
that was going for hertechnician license and she
passed with almost a perfectscore was very, very good.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
She did it on the
during the podcast.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
No no, no, no, uh, so
so clubhouse has a team of ve's
.
Oh, okay, and so yes, it was a,it was was going to say that's
that.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Just put me to shame.
Just you know, like Izzo there, reg Ritter, come on, you got
this one.
Speaker 1 (22:29):
Ask questions.
Let's go, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
It's a big difference
, though, from the technician to
the extra, even from thegeneral to the extra.
This is a lot harder.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
There's a lot of
overlap between tech and general
.
I don't feel that there is asmuch overlap going from general
to extra.
General to extra is a big leap.
No worries on it taking yousome time it took me well over a
year so it's all good.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
What am I?
On two years Just keeping thepodcast, going with their
favorite episode, because whatwould they do if I wasn't being
tested?
They probably wouldn't listen.
Speaker 1 (23:24):
We'd have to figure
out some other way to throw
testing questions in there.
Yeah, oh, all right.
Well, todd, in the usual formatof what we do here on.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
Live Green.
Speaker 1 (23:34):
Ham, how was your ham
radio week?
Speaker 2 (23:38):
It was very
uneventful.
I had a very busy week.
A lot of things happened atwork that were unexpected.
One of them was I got stuck ina traffic jam for from 11 30 am
to 1 30 pm when a propane tankdecided to get in an accident
(24:01):
and flip over the guardrail anddown an embankment and the
driver was stuck, couldn't getout.
Thing was leaking diesel fuel, didn't know if the propane tank
was going to blow.
They shut down both sides ofthe highway and, fortunately,
just minor injuries and the tank, the propane tank on the truck
(24:22):
was empty but didn't leak somediesel fuel.
And I got some pictures and somevideo and I'm working on a
video for the Ham Diaries andthat screwed up my whole.
That screwed up my whole daybecause I was heading up north
to Campton and I had to get back.
This was on Tuesday.
(24:42):
I had to get back for, uh, themiddle school baseball game and
I wasn't going to be able to getup there.
So I just went to Concord, gotsome lunch and turned around and
came back.
So I had to go back up toCampton on Thursday, which
screwed up my Thursday, and hadto rearrange everything.
So it was just a.
It was just a shit week.
I was just like whatever.
So good news is, kids, we hadthree games and they won all
(25:08):
three of them, which was awesome.
My coaching debut for the springwith my new team.
We beat the other Amherst teamthat's the town I live in and
that was like sweet because theywere all talking smack and my
kids came out there and we'reall business.
And then he and then we havethe travel team that I.
(25:34):
I just do this thing calledGame Changer.
I keep score and I video it sopeople like my mother can watch
it who she's not in the best ofhealth so she can watch it live.
So I put a, I put my, I put onephone behind the backstop and I
video it live, stream it andthen, while the game's going on,
(25:55):
I'm on my phone and I'm scoringthe game and they can see
everything that's happening andget updates.
It's kind of a cool app.
It makes it feel like you'rewatching a pro baseball game
because it'll say, like you know, zach Newman, you know line
drive to center field, single, you know.
(26:18):
So they can watch it as well, even if they can't.
I know some dads are like onbusiness trips and stuff or moms
and they can watch it as well,if even if they can, I know some
dads are like on business tripsand stuff or moms and they can
watch it.
So it's kind of cool.
But yeah, these, these guys camefrom maine.
They came like from waterville, maine, so I think it's like two
and a two hours 45 minutes, maybe three hours, all the way
down on a saturday morning toplay us and uh, we skunked them,
(26:39):
uh, 12, nothing in threeinnings and then 18, nothing in
the second game in three innings.
So I felt bad that they had todrive all the way back.
It came down three hours driveback and this one woman was
there and her father was thereand he had an earpiece in.
You know, he couldn't hear andshe's like I thought we were
doing two games.
(27:00):
She goes we did dad, dad, wejust got our asses handed to us.
So, uh, that team's doing wellthey.
The first game they played.
They, uh, they were.
They played a division, oneelite team, and they beat them.
So that was pretty sweet.
They weren't supposed to beatthem, they're supposed to get
kind of killed and they won.
(27:21):
So, oh good, yeah, so it'sbaseball is no knock on wood,
it's going good.
But as for ham radio, a littlebit on the repeater, that's
about it.
I didn't even get out forsupport your parks weekend.
Just too much baseball and toomuch crap going on.
So I was really bummed.
But my brother-in-law not mybrother, my nephew, my
(27:49):
brother-in-law's son, so that'smy nephew right, kind of through
marriage he, uh, he texted meand I was at the baseball game
and he's like, hey, he goes, I'mup on temple mountain and uh,
there's a lot of uh ham radioguys here.
I'm like, yep, that's my club,I should be there.
But I'm stuck at baseballscoring games and I said give it
a try.
So I don't know if he was goingup there for a hike, so I don't
know if.
I don't know if he stopped ordid anything, but he said it was
(28:11):
a pretty big turnout, so didyou go to it?
Speaker 1 (28:16):
No, I did not.
Speaker 2 (28:17):
No, yeah, so no, I
did not.
No, yeah, so I don't know.
I heard the bands were terrible, but it was a good turnout and
I heard that just from peopletalking on the repeater.
Oh, and we got a second.
We got a new repeater We'vebeen testing.
So I have been doing some hamradio.
I've been helping Ryan test hisrepeater that he put up on his
tower.
It's a 440 machine and I'vebeen giving him signal.
(28:41):
You know wherever I'm going, soit works up to about just past
the Ameskeg Bridge exit on 293,and then you get the mountain,
You're kind of stuck in thehills and I think you get
Uconunik, Blakshia.
So we're still having troublenorth with both the repeaters.
(29:05):
You know North of Manchester, but uh, South Nashua, through
Amherst.
Everywhere I've been, it's beengreat.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
So yeah, I noticed,
uh, I've been, I've been, you
know, kind of playing aroundwith it, uh, testing it too, Um,
especially like in the HollisBrook, kind of playing around
with it, testing it too, especially like in the Hollis
Brookline kind of area, mason, you know like just the Bedford.
The Bedford repeater justwouldn't reach Right I mean I
(29:32):
might be able to key it, butlike I'm not hearing what people
are saying.
But yeah, with Ryan's, like, yeah, no problem, it's coming in
really well.
Speaker 2 (29:43):
I think in Manchester
, I think with Uconunic, and
then I don't know, there'ssomething blocking the signal
from the south that we justcan't get it.
I don't know what it is, butany time you get past exit six
it just it goes away.
And I was actually talking toRyan and it was great and then
(30:05):
all of a sudden, like I just got, like I was getting into like
exit seven, like to go into likea hooks it, you know if I was
going to take that right and itjust that was it, it was the end
of it.
So I then got them on theepisode.
Oh, and here's another hammer.
I wouldn you mean I didn't doany ham radio.
I actually used ham radio andit actually was used as
something like that was usefuland helpful.
(30:27):
It wasn't just like shootingthe shit on the radio.
So as I was stuck in my trafficjam parking lot for 1130 to 130,
I got on the Epson repeaterbecause I was in bow and you
know you can get that repeateranywhere.
So I just started givingupdates on the traffic, seeing
if there's anyone else intraffic besides me and who comes
(30:47):
on air is W1SNH Ryan and hesays he goes.
Oh, he goes.
Thanks so much.
He goes.
Yeah, I'm heading up north, hegoes.
I'll have to take the backroads.
So I was giving him updates.
He didn't have to hit thetraffic and he got off 93 and
went to back roads.
He goes yep, I'm just passingthrough Bow now on the back
(31:07):
roads or whatever he goes.
Thanks for the heads up.
So you know, given some trafficreports, avoided one of our
colleagues to not get stuck init with me and not get stuck in
it with me.
So I also called out.
I called out on a national callfrequency to see if there's any
truckers or anyone listening.
(31:28):
But there wasn't, but a lot ofpeople from Epsom and everyone
got on one the information thatI was just giving them feedback
of what I saw.
I'm like, oh, fire trucks goingby, the big ass tow trucks
going by, you know.
Oh, there's the hazmat team.
So it was kind of fun.
But uh, you know, that's that's, that's a good way to use ham
(31:48):
radio in like a real lifesituation.
That's, given traffic reports, being in the middle of it and
saved Ryan, saved Ryan fromgetting stuck in it.
So that was kind of cool, nice.
So, paul, what'd you do thisweek in, uh, ham radio?
Speaker 1 (32:05):
well, uh, so I'm
trying to think um, so, not
directly ham radio related, butI did, uh, I did get um my KV4P
HD build video done.
That's pretty cool, you know.
So like it just attaches to theback of your phone.
Speaker 2 (32:29):
Oh cool.
Speaker 1 (32:31):
And then you get an
app on the phone that you know,
it literally acts like a 2 meter70 centimeter HD.
Wow, yeah.
So that was cool, I got thatdone.
And then, you know, I figuredsupport your parks weekend.
You know we had the near livestream.
(32:51):
What Friday night support yourparks.
Yeah, you missed that.
Speaker 2 (32:58):
I heard it was a good
one.
I didn't get home until late,so I was going to come on right.
So of course, you know me beingthe coach, I got to make sure
all the kids are picked up andnothing left, and you know kids
are always leaving gloves.
And I found a bag and I found akid's report card and all kinds
of stuff, right?
So so anyway, I uh, I'm sittingin, I was talking to one of the
(33:23):
coaches and we're about toleave and like all of a sudden
and it was dark now all of asudden, like this, the wind was
blowing and this, like all thissmoke comes down from like the
the sky, over the school, downthe trees, and then rolls into
the field and just like swampsus and it smells like someone's
like burning, like a bonfire orsomething like holy crap, what
(33:48):
was that?
Like that's crazy.
And you could see it.
It was dark, but you could seeit kind of coming in.
It was like thick.
So I was like wow, that's weird.
So we left and as I was leaving,as I'm driving, I see the smoke
coming up.
I'm like the hell is that?
That is one hell of a fire.
We'll find out that there's ahuge fire where a barn or shed
(34:09):
caught on fire.
Then it burned down the houseand I drove by it today and it
burnt like the lady's whole yardwas just charred black.
I was like holy crap.
So yeah, it was uh, it was anunfortunate I think.
Uh, what I saw on social mediais that a woman I feel bad she
just lost her husband and shewas living there alone and you
(34:31):
know, no one was hurt oranything, but the house is
destroyed and everything in it.
So uh, but yeah, so that waskind.
So by the time I got done withthat, the live stream was pretty
much ending.
So I just kind of said, eh, getthe next one.
Speaker 1 (34:48):
Well, we had a good
time, I heard, but yeah, so we
talked about Support your Parksweekend, which is this weekend,
and so my plan was to go to myfavorite park, you know.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
I could.
Speaker 1 (35:02):
I could have gone and
met up with everybody and you
know from the club uh at TempleMountain.
But I wanted, I wanted to tryand hammer out this kilo right,
like 730 contacts in right, I'mgetting close.
So I figured for sure, supportyour parks weekend.
It's going to be busy, busy, busy.
(35:23):
I'm just going to rail throughcontacts left and right, I'll
easily be able to get 300contacts.
Yeah, no, I set up.
I set up and granted all right.
So now you've been to my spot, right?
Yep.
So I backed my truck in next tothe water because the wind was
(35:46):
coming in off the water and Ifigured I'd use my truck as a as
a wind break.
And it set up the, the tableand the radio and everything you
know on the other side.
But it got a little overcast andso so I was kind of worried
about rain and so I had the easyup in the back, uh, back of the
truck.
So I was like, oh, you know, ifI got to I'll, I'll pull the
(36:06):
easy up out.
You know, I, I, I set up and itwas so much noise on on 10
meters like crashes, big, bigstatic crashes, and like um,
like a clicking that you knowperiodic clicking, and it and it
(36:27):
was.
I mean, it's so rf quiet overthere, like yeah, if you're
hearing, you know something'sgoing on so, uh, yeah, so I made
, I made one contact on on 10and then then I switched to 20.
And I spent four hours justhunting, like I didn't do any
(36:48):
calling, I just hunted.
And there were so many stationsthat like I'd hear them really
well and then, like, as I'mtrying to get them, all of a
sudden they're gone and it'slike how do you go from being
like five, nine plus 10 crystalclear to just nothing?
(37:10):
You're down in the weeds likeway down.
That's just.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
Yeah, that's what the
band conditions were so yeah,
I've been in band conditionslike that where it's like you
hear and you're great, and thenall of a sudden like, especially
like I've done a lot, the oneswhen I go down for work and I'm
like down in, down south and theband condition would be great.
I hear them and then all of asudden they're gone, like it's
not even like they're fading, like they're just gone, and then
(37:34):
they'll pop back up again.
You know, it's like five, nine.
I'm like whoa, where'd you go?
Oh, the bands are up and down.
I'm like up and down, it's like, yeah, they're like spiking,
but yeah, that really I heard soon the repeater, just driving
around people were talking abouthow difficult and tough the
bands were and that it was likeyou know, they were struggling
(37:55):
just to get.
You know, 10 contacts.
You know, at the at the supportyour parks at our club did 10
contacts.
You know at the at the supportyour parks at our club did.
So that was pretty, that'spretty tough.
Speaker 1 (38:06):
Yeah Well, so my my
first contact for the park, I
grabbed.
I grabbed Tim Casey, one QDK ona on two meters, because you
know I mean he was up themountain and so were they doing
it on in the parking lot, I'massuming I would hike the
mountain.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
Were they doing it in
the parking lot?
I'm assuming I didn't hike themountain.
But you're still up high, because even that base is higher
than.
Speaker 1 (38:30):
Yeah, you're up on
the hill there, yeah, yeah.
So I got Tim on two meters andthen I finished the day with 28.
Yeah, 28 contacts out of fourhours.
And then I finished the daywith 28.
Speaker 2 (38:46):
Yeah, 28 contacts out
of four hours.
Four hours 28?
That is tough.
I was going to say, oh, maybean hour or two man.
Speaker 1 (38:57):
No, four hours.
Yeah, there was one point whereI had actually I made contact
with a station and just as I'mspinning the dial to go to the
next one, my phone goes off.
I'm like, oh, this is awesome, the rare occurrence I have a
miniscule amount of cell service.
So my phone goes off and I lookat it and it was Carlos K9OL
(39:21):
and he's like dude, dude, thatstation that you just made a
contact with and he gave me thecall sign.
He goes.
I'm literally standing behindthe operator and he wouldn't
pass me the mic what?
Speaker 2 (39:35):
why not?
Why wouldn't he pass him themic?
I don't know Was he.
Speaker 1 (39:45):
He didn't even say I
know him.
Yeah, I tried.
I went back to the frequencyand I was like, dude, I'm
listening, like grab the mic andget on.
Like I'll grab you real quick.
And he was like, nah, theycalled last call, they're
packing it up.
So he was like, listen, I'mgoing to go to a different park
(40:07):
and I'll try and get you from adifferent park.
I'm like, all right, cool.
Well, like an hour goes by,right, and like I mean, you want
to talk about struggle bus?
Like four hours for 28 contacts, that's a struggle bus.
So it got to the point where itwas.
Uh, it was like four, 15.
And I still needed to go to thegrocery store.
I still, I still needed to torun to the house.
(40:27):
I had somebody that uh wantedto buy a tuner that I don't use,
so I needed to go grab that.
And I was like, all right, enough's enough, I'm just gonna
pack up my stuff.
But but before all that, like Idid end up putting the easy up
out because, lo and behold, itstarted raining on me and so I
(40:49):
had the easy up.
I had one leg strapped to therunning board of the truck and
the other leg I took a ratchetstrap and I ratchet strapped it
to the freaking toe hitch andand I shit you not the wind was
blowing so hard that, like, bothof the other legs were were
(41:13):
lifted and it was just pullingon the truck and I was like man,
this, this easy up, is going tobe destroyed by the time this
activation is done.
I don't know that all this isworth it, but it was a good time
anyways, and so I, I, I, Ithank everybody that was patient
.
Uh, you know, given the bandconditions, there was a lot of,
(41:34):
uh, you know, repetitiveness toit.
You know, like, all right, what's your park again?
What's your park again?
What's your park again?
All right, I think I got itthis time.
What's your park again?
Speaker 2 (41:46):
Yeah, no, I got it,
but yeah.
So at least you got out there,I, I, I, literally I was.
So I mean, it seems like everytime there's a support your
parks weekend, I'm like swampedwith fricking baseball.
Spring, summer, summer, it's.
I got the all-star.
I normally have a tournamentI'm going to, so I keep missing
(42:09):
them, and it really, and I washoping that the um, the game,
the game.
I was going to go after thegame this weekend and meet up
with those guys at TempleMountain, but then I heard all
that chatter about how bad thebands were and people were
packing up, so I was like, guessI'm not going to Temple
Mountain.
Speaker 1 (42:31):
I would imagine that
the folks over at Temple
Mountain.
It was probably more of a POTAmeetup and a social event.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
you know Right,
rather than sit there and
construct, I'm all business, though when it's time to do it,
I need to do it.
If I start, I'm not leaving.
Like I'm like you, I'd sitthere for four hours just to get
10 if I had to.
Like I'm not leaving.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
Well, I planned to
sit there for four hours.
I was hoping for like 300.
Speaker 2 (42:59):
Get your kilo and you
got 28.
I got 28.
28 well-earned POTA contacts.
Speaker 1 (43:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (43:14):
So I'm up to 755 now.
Yeah.
Well, I looked at the weather.
The weather is looking nice.
This week I'm going to bring myradio to work and maybe try to
do a lunch work on the railtrail.
Yet I gotta get another hundredto get tied with eric and then
we'll.
We're gonna have to do a figureout when we're gonna do the
live stream and hopefully thebands will be better and get the
kilo together.
Speaker 1 (43:35):
So oh, that'd be cool
.
You guys should definitely livestream the shit out of that.
Yeah, we are, yeah, we'redefinitely.
Speaker 2 (43:42):
That's why we're
trying to figure out, like, what
number to stop at.
So we're even so like, likehe's exactly 100.
So if I get to like 100, I'mjust going to stop, and then
we'll be at the same one, andthen we can, you know, 100 more
100, 100 might be ambitious, given you know how angry the
(44:04):
sun's been lately that's what Iwas thinking.
I'm like, well, maybe we shoulddrop down to like maybe 35, but
you know, we'll make it a long,we'll make it a fun live stream.
We'll just live stream and playaround with it and see what
happens.
But yeah, so that's um.
So yeah, that's awesome, but uh, yeah, I didn't do it, I've
(44:25):
just been.
You know I I had to get somework done today.
I was gonna go, I was, I wasthinking about going up to
Temple Mountain today and Ihaven't worked that one yet
because it's kind of a new.
It's one of the newer parksbecause Pac-Man, adnock or
Miller State Park is rightacross the street.
So I've done that one a fewtimes, but not Temple Mountain,
(44:46):
because when I was doing Millerit wasn't actually a park.
So, anyway, I was going to gotoday but then I had to help my
wife.
She does Sleep in Heavenly Peacewhere she makes beds for
underprivileged kids.
And they go to schools and CubScouts will do it, high schools
(45:09):
will do it and they do this bigbuild and they do it like every
person, every station has likeone thing to do, like, oh,
you're going to drill the holesfor the rails, you're going to
connect the rails you're goingto and then they have them in
pieces.
So then we have a barn inAmherst that someone donates or
lets us use and there's allthese pieces to these beds.
(45:32):
So sometimes there's bunk beds, sometimes there's singles, low,
high, and when they're going todo a delivery she goes out
there and she just re-drills theholes just to make sure they're
all cleaned out and theyhaven't swollen or anything so
they can just go into the houseand bolt the things together.
But they heavy duty beds likewith two by fours and stuff.
(45:54):
I mean they're no, they're likethings aren't breaking for
nothing.
So, um, yeah, it's pretty cool.
So I've been helping her dothat, you know, the last couple
weeks and uh, she says it helpsher out a lot because she can
get it done a lot quicker.
So we had to do like seven thismorning.
So I came home and uh, I waslike, all right, I'm gonna go
and I'm like, oh, I gotta dothis.
(46:15):
I put up the greenhouse in awindstorm, which was I was
telling you earlier which waslike a nightmare, like not a
good idea.
Todd, the frame was no big deal, but as soon as I tried to put
the it's one plastic piece.
It was like blowing away.
And then I was like and thenonce I got the thing on there,
um, I had to open up the onedoor and it's solid in the back
(46:37):
because I had to put the bars inthe thing and then I had to
connect them with these pieces,so I had to be inside.
All of a sudden, like the windwould catch the inside and lift
the whole thing up with me in it, like, if you start taking off,
I'm grabbing it.
I was like, oh, it's just myluck.
So that was, uh, that was agood couple hours of fixing that
(46:59):
and trying to get it staked tothe ground.
But I've got it in pretty goodthat if that thing blows the,
the plastic's gonna rip beforethat frame leaves earth.
I'm telling you right now thatthing isn't going anywhere.
The plastic might break, butthe wind is, uh, I got that
thing anchored down pretty good, yeah, so I did that.
(47:20):
And then zach ruined his, um,his little dirt bike.
He's.
I got him a.
He got an electric dirt bikefor christ, christmas and I
think he stripped the gear.
I took the whole thing apartand opened up the gearbox and,
um, the drive gear isn't hittingthe main ratchet that connects
to the chain, so it's juststripped.
(47:43):
It doesn't touch it, does Imean there's no adjusting to it,
so I got to find a new gear.
I think there's no adjusting toit, so I gotta find a new gear.
I think.
So that took another hour or soto figure out what was wrong
with it.
And after taking all thesethousand bolts apart and he's
like, dad, do you know where allthese bolts go back, I'm like,
yeah, I'll figure it out, as Ijust don't lose any.
Speaker 1 (48:08):
So, anyway, I'll give
you a little mechanics tip.
Take an old piece of cardboardright, mm-hmm, and just kind of
draw a rough outline, mm-hmm,whatever it is that you're
taking bolts out of, and thenstick the bolts through the
cardboard where they go.
Speaker 2 (48:29):
Oh, that's a good
idea thing.
Speaker 1 (48:31):
Yeah, so then.
Then when you're putting itback together, you just pull the
bolt out of the cardboard andyou know exactly where it goes
yeah, that's a great idea.
Speaker 2 (48:39):
Yeah, I mean, these
are there's.
There's two different bolts, Imean it's it's small, skinny
ones and then thicker ones andthey're all the same.
So it's not like rocket science.
But you know, to to an 11 yearold he's kind of like holy cow.
He goes you think you're gonnabe able to fix that?
I don't know, we might need toget grandpa over here to take a
look at it.
So I get my dad to come over.
(49:01):
I was like come, you know, youtake the grease, you take the
thing.
It's like, you know, covered ingrease, so it's all over your
hands.
It's like now, now, you're like, once you get it, yeah, once
you get it all greased up,you're like, ah, fuck it, you
know I'll just keep going at it.
But he's like, maybe there'stoo much grease.
And I'm like, no, you want thegrease, that's what you want.
(49:22):
So I don't know, hopefully Ican fix it, cause the thing was
kind of expensive.
Well, it was expensive.
It would suck if it was onelittle part and it's like you
can't take the motor apart.
So I tried to take the wholething apart, like to say, okay,
maybe I can just take this partoff.
It's all like one big plasticpiece that you can't get into,
(49:48):
so anyway, so we'll work on thatnext weekend.
Speaker 1 (49:53):
There you go.
I was going to go hit the parktoday.
Speaker 2 (49:59):
After yesterday.
Speaker 1 (50:00):
I got up this morning
and I was like you know what?
It's Easter Sunday.
Not that I'm religious anymore, but I respect the.
I respect the fact that it's.
Easter Sunday, praise zombieJesus, and it's also 420.
One of your favorite holidays.
I happen to enjoy 420.
(50:21):
So I said you know what I'mgoing to take today.
I'm just going to do some videoediting.
I'm going to take today, I'mjust going to do some video
editing.
I mean like literally from 6.30this morning when I got up like
this RV hasn't stopped rocking, like every time the wind blows,
(50:42):
the whole thing shakes Like ah,I feel like I'm on a boat, yeah.
Speaker 2 (50:46):
Well, I was upstairs
like after I was done, before we
did this.
I came home, I took a showerand I was just sitting in our
living room or our family room,it's kind of like above the
garage.
So we were upstairs and thewind was like howling through
the windows Like I was likenormally you don't hear it that
much, but it was pretty strongtoday.
(51:07):
And it was pretty strong todayand it was pretty consistent so
and I was going to pick up.
I was going to pick up, uh, allthe branches and stuff all over
my yard, but I was like, well, what's the point?
They're just falling down nowanyways, I might as well just do
it once and get them all up.
Speaker 1 (51:24):
Yeah, all the
branches you pick up today are
going to be replaced and you'regoing to have a new one tomorrow
.
Speaker 2 (51:29):
Yeah, I was like,
screw that, I'll just wait.
But I did.
Last weekend I did have thebonfire from last year's
branches.
I finally, you know, it alldried out and I burned it.
It burnt pretty, it went prettygood.
So, like I had it going and um,and then I, you know it, it
took us about an hour and a halfto get it.
I think it was like an hour anda half to get it actually to
get going because it was so wet, because it just poured and
(51:52):
there's still.
It was the weekend we had snow.
Remember that saturday we hadsnow.
So you know, you can legallyburn those burn piles, you know,
as long as there's snow on theground, as long as there's snow.
So there's all snow on theground.
When I slit the damn thing, butby the time it was in, it was
all melted.
So I was like, hey, I'm covered, um.
But I went down, I went downthere today to look at it and it
(52:13):
was, um, just the outer sidewas of just charcoal.
So it just, you know, it waslike the thicker logs and stuff.
So I gotta rake all that in andI'll do another small one when
the uh, when the weather stopsblowing the wind, because I
think today would have been abad day to to let a fire.
Speaker 1 (52:33):
It would have been a
very bad fire.
Speaker 2 (52:37):
At least I'm smart
with that.
But yeah, but you know, it wasum, it was good.
So, working on that, I justbought a, a Thatcher for my
either my lawnmower or my Rangerfor $100 on Amazon, because I'm
not raking my yard this year, like fuck it $100, I'll just
(52:58):
drive around my yard and I'llhave Zach do it.
He can drive the Ranger.
I'm going to just drive aroundthe yard and get all this crap
up.
Speaker 1 (53:09):
I usually you know I
hate raking leaves that it
doesn't make any sense to me,right?
Because, yeah, if, if, if youjust mulch it, right, you just
run it over the mower and youmulch it and and you let it sit
on your, on your yard over thewinter, all all the mulch leaves
break down and provide thenourishment that your freaking
(53:32):
grass needs.
Yeah, you know.
So my, my neighborhoodabsolutely hates me in the fall
because I, I, just, I just leaveall my, all my leaves yeah,
well, that's what I normally doin the fall, like around the
last cut I'll just mulch.
Speaker 2 (53:49):
You know, I won't bag
it Normally.
I bag it Because if you mulchit every time, it builds up too
much of a thickness and then youcan kill the grass.
So you got to be you should bagit most of the time, but every
once in a while you should mulchit.
I mean, I would say like maybeevery fourth or fifth cut, mulch
(54:09):
it and then bag the rest ofthem.
But I normally just do it atthe end and, like I said, I used
to be really into lawns andstuff and now I'm like I just
want the damn thing cut.
As long as it's semi green, I'mgood.
Speaker 1 (54:25):
I'm of the mentality
where, if, if it looks natural,
you know, like it's full ofwildflowers and freaking
whatever, I don't give a shithow tall it is.
Speaker 2 (54:35):
Yeah, you know my
brother out in California.
I'm like, damn, I pull up tohis house and his grass was
looking sweet.
I'm like man, that looks likegolf course grade.
I'm like you're kicking ass inyour yard and he's laughing at
me.
I'm like, what do you do?
And he goes, take a look at it.
I'm like I'm looking at it.
He goes no, go up close.
And it was AstroTurf, yeah, Imean.
(55:04):
And like this grass, like thisAstroTurf he has is like it
looks real, like it's really, itlooks like a golf course, like
it's, it's high quality.
It's not like it didn't lookfake, like some of the neighbors
that did it.
They have like the cheap shit.
I'm like he must've gone all inCause.
I thought it was real.
That's funny, yeah.
But yeah, yeah, I was.
(55:25):
And then today, while I wasbuilding the uh, when I was
building the uh greenhouse, Ikept watching my antenna because
it's hanging up there in the,in the trees, and that thing was
swaying like up and down leftand right.
I'm like, oh, don't come down, don't come down.
But it didn't, it's it sways.
A lot of things went up I thinkthis time, uh, it came down
once and then eric and I shot itback up there.
(55:46):
I think this time it came downonce and then Eric and I shot it
back up there and I think thistime we've got it up there
pretty good, because it's hadlike ice on it, like that round
along the whole thing with windblowing.
It didn't come down, it droopeda little bit, but it's on
(56:06):
spring, so you know it'ssupposed to do that, but yeah,
it's still working.
Speaker 1 (56:16):
So that was a
positive thing.
Now Neerfest is two weeks.
Are you going to Neerfest?
Speaker 2 (56:21):
Yeah, so, fortunately
, next weekend, I'm going to be
up in Maine on Sunday.
So it would have been cool ifit was because I could have gone
Saturday.
But I'm going to come afterbaseball, so they have, like I
don't know, they'll be donearound two or three or something
.
So I'm going to head up thereand we'll do like the live
(56:42):
stream or something, hopefullyin the evening or late afternoon
so I can be there.
Yeah, yeah, well, friday I gotbe there.
Yeah, yeah, well, friday I gota game.
Let me see, friday I got a gametoo.
We're doing the live streamFriday, friday.
Speaker 1 (56:57):
Yep, yeah, just
Saturday by you know, three, 4.
Pm.
Like I'm going to have to getthe camper loaded up and get out
of there.
Yeah, yeah, I've got load it upand get out of there.
Speaker 2 (57:08):
Yeah, yeah, I've got.
Um, I may not be able to makeit Cause I've got a game at five
45 until seven 45.
Speaker 1 (57:18):
Oh it'll be another
live stream Sans Todd Damn.
That's all right, we'll havefun without you.
Speaker 2 (57:32):
I mean I could take
work off and do it during the
day, but you probably already.
It's already been announced,right?
No, we haven't announcedanything, we haven't scheduled
anything we haven't created arecording yet, or uh, we haven't
done anything, so it's justwhenever we do, what is, what is
, what is it is, it goes, itgoes.
(57:53):
Friday, it goes.
Thursday, friday, saturday, butsaturday it ends so thursday is
set up.
Speaker 1 (58:01):
Yeah, friday and
saturday is the main event and
it and it ends saturdayafternoon at like three, four
o''clock, whatever it is.
Speaker 2 (58:13):
What time do you guys
think you're going to do the
live stream at?
Speaker 1 (58:18):
I would imagine that
it would probably be, you know,
in the 7, 8 o'clock pm range,somewhere in there.
Speaker 2 (58:28):
Oh, wait a minute.
Speaker 1 (58:32):
It's going to be the
2nd of May.
Speaker 2 (58:34):
Oh, okay, I was
looking at the wrong date.
Yeah, I'll be there.
All right, look at that.
No games on that Friday.
Sweet, nice, hold on.
I just dropped my phone.
No, that'll be awesome.
Now I can definitely do it.
Yeah, this week sucks, I Holdon.
I just dropped my phone.
No, that'll be awesome, now Ican definitely do it.
Yeah, this week sucks.
I got three games.
Actually, I have four games, but I can only go to three
(58:58):
because two of them overlap.
Speaker 1 (59:01):
It's hard to be in
two places at the same time.
Speaker 2 (59:03):
I know I'm a big fan
of cloning.
I really want that technologyto be there, because I want one
for work, I want one for work, Iwant one for coaching, and then
I just want one for, and then Ijust need me.
So what can you?
Speaker 1 (59:18):
do.
What is it?
It's Michael Keaton right.
Multiplicity or duplicity?
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (59:29):
Sometimes I need,
sometimes I need two at at work,
two or three of me.
You know, I got two, threedifferent places I need to be.
Speaker 1 (59:36):
I'm like, listen, I'm
like I can only be in one place
, and so yeah, anyway, your, your clones will just get dumber
and dumber, yeah, and then belike what the hell todd?
Speaker 2 (59:48):
yeah I could just do
potas.
I can go off to your spot andjust sit there every day.
Get up there every morning, bring a big jug of coffee and do
pota activations, not have toworry about the world well,
let's, let's hope that I get mykilo before you just go cloning.
(01:00:11):
Yeah, then you wouldn't knowwhich one you got.
Do I have Todd the clone or doI have Todd himself?
I'm just looking forward toretirement.
It's getting there I mean, it'ssix years away and then life
will be good.
And who knows, we have a budgetproblem, so maybe they'll offer
early retirement and I can getout of here earlier.
Speaker 1 (01:00:35):
Yeah, well, um, I
don't know.
We gotta, we gotta figure outsome stream yard alternative or,
or something because, let metell you, the uh, the expenses
of, yeah, podcasting aredramatically going through the
roof.
Speaker 2 (01:00:50):
Well, so Eric and I
are.
We were looking on, like thebuzzsprout is even just to do,
so we're looking at a new onethat we can do for like a third
of the cost, can do almosteverything.
So he's testing it out with thePatreon members and once he
gives the okay, we're probablygoing to switch out of
(01:01:12):
Buzzsprout because we can savemoney there.
And then, yeah, the StreamYard.
He's working on that too, because what is it?
800 bucks a year or something.
That's freaking ridiculous$800?
.
Yeah, that's doubled.
I wonder if they're going tolose a lot of people.
Speaker 1 (01:01:31):
I don't think they
care, honestly.
I mean because what's thealternative?
Like I mean, they know they'vegot it cornered.
Speaker 2 (01:01:39):
No, he's looking at
another service to do it at.
I know he's looking at one I'mnot sure what it's called, but I
mean I guess if you're like, you know who's that dumb kid,
that's like the number one.
My kid watches him.
He gives away like Ferraris andstuff, like he's a
multi-zillionaire from oh MrBeast, mr Beast.
(01:02:01):
I mean I guess for him 800bucks is like nothing because
he's giving away like 10,000 ashow, so like he doesn't care,
but for us crap, 800 bucks.
Yeah, think of how many jumpsyou could do with that.
Speaker 1 (01:02:19):
That would.
That would be quite a few Right, Especially after I get
licensed.
Speaker 2 (01:02:26):
Yeah, yeah, there you
go.
They set you up for the yearbut anyway, yeah, so podcasting
is starting to get expensive.
If you do it weekly and youactually put content on it.
I mean, I guess if you did it,you know, once a month by
yourself or you know, you didsomething small, but we're doing
it every week.
(01:02:47):
And then you have to have aseparate stream for the Patreon
members members, and it's notlike you can just add it to this
way.
It's like a whole anotheraccount really.
And then you yeah, it's, it'snuts the more I look into.
Like eric and I were on thephone just trying to go over and
trying to figure out thenumbers, because I I pay for the
(01:03:07):
buzzsprout account, so I don'tknow.
It was like.
I think it was like first wedid like twelve dollars a month
and then it went to like 20 andI started getting these bills
for like 54 a month.
I'm like what the?
And then I found out that if Iwent up a notch it would be 20
cheaper because we're, becausenow we're going every week.
(01:03:28):
And then I said, well, if we goall the way up, but then if we
go back, and then it's like perhour like it's.
You had to do all this math tofigure it out.
Because if you figure, if we doa two hour a week podcast, you
know let's say we do an hour now, but let's say we go up, but
then you have those five weekmonths, right, the extra week.
(01:03:48):
You know that counts for themonth.
So now you go up and they say,oh, it's like $10 per hour over
that, or $20 per hour, it's 10.
And so I don't know, it's just,it's crazy.
I'm like, can you just get a?
I want a flat rate on unlimited.
You know that's what I likeUnlimited, like cell phones, I
(01:04:15):
can use as much data and callsand texts as I want.
I don't have to worry about.
You know my plan.
Remember the old plans whereyou had to watch and, oh, if you
go over text it was going to belike a dollar a text or
something and you'd get like a$500 bill because you know, yeah
, yeah, no.
Speaker 1 (01:04:36):
I remember the days
where you know you were limited
on number of minutes that youcould use you had to call.
Yep, yep.
Your texting was limited.
Your data was severely limited.
Speaker 2 (01:04:50):
oh yeah, and then you
know, and then if you used too
much data you'd get into likethe you, you, you.
You went above your limit, sonow you get super slow data.
Speaker 1 (01:05:00):
It's like a picture
would come in and it'd be like
three hours.
Speaker 2 (01:05:03):
You're like what the?
Yeah, yeah, but now it's alland it's actually getting.
I mean, I I live in a townwhere I have verizon and it
sucks.
Like I'm I'm calling them, probably tomorrow, and being
like, listen, you need.
I've been a customer since youwere 9x, which was in the 90s.
(01:05:26):
I've been a customer of yours.
So I'm about to leave becauseyour service in my town sucks.
It doesn't work in the house,it doesn't work in my
neighborhood, it doesn't work inthree quarters of the places in
town.
So I'm going to ask them for anextender and I want three for
my daughter, me and my wife inthe cars so we can at least have
(01:05:50):
a conversation while we'redriving in our town.
And it's crazy.
I mean I'm not joking.
We get SOS, like literally SOS.
Like how, like I'm right here, like I'm right off 101.
Like how the hell do I have SOS?
Like no signal, no service.
Yeah, I mean signal, no service.
(01:06:10):
Yeah, I mean that's nodifferent.
People who have AT&T get fullbars, five, whatever.
It's crazy.
Speaker 1 (01:06:20):
Yeah, so my house is
right off of the main roads.
Speaker 2 (01:06:26):
Yeah, you don't get
service there either because I
was at your house and I was likenope, here we go again, nope,
and I mean it's yeah I've.
Speaker 1 (01:06:37):
I have comcast, but
comcast uses the verizon network
.
Yeah, and so, yeah, we're inthe same boat.
Speaker 2 (01:06:43):
Yeah, I mean, and
again, like generally, verizon
nationwide is probably got thebest coverage everywhere, like
overall, but just in this areait just sucks.
And I'm like how can AT&T be sogood?
Why don't you just throw like a, pay them wherever they got
(01:07:03):
their tower and just put thefreaking thing on there like
everyone else does?
I mean, literally there's atower.
You know, if you're coming fromManchester and there's a tower
right in Bedford, as you makethat, you're coming up 101 and
then 114 goes straight and youmake the left by the police
station.
If you're coming fromManchester and then you drive
past the police station and then, like a little bit up the way,
(01:07:26):
there's a tower right there.
I drop calls there.
How the hell do I drop a callthere?
I'm at the tower, I'm literallyat the tower and then in the
skip zone and it kicks back inright, when you pass it, you
know, and then you get the umand then there's a tower at the
mobile station.
So I don't know, it's just itirritates me.
(01:07:48):
Or you send a text message andyou're in the shit area and then
it says did not go through.
And it says send it as a text.
And then it goes throughbecause the the apple uh what
they call it messages, becausethat uses a different thing
won't go through because youneed a little bit more.
It goes through the datainstead of the phone, yeah, so
(01:08:12):
yeah, well, I, just I, I want to.
Speaker 1 (01:08:14):
I want to reiterate
that, uh, you know, based based
off the last episode we didright, where we talked about how
we're, we're now becominginfamous.
You know well, the the costsassociated with being infamous
are are ever increasing.
We very much appreciate our fanbase and we appreciate
(01:08:37):
everybody that that, you know, tunes in and and watches us or
or listens to us.
Yeah, I think I think this hasbeen a really good kind of show
about nothing.
Right, this is, this is likethe live free and ham clubhouse
edition.
Speaker 2 (01:08:54):
Yeah, we're just
shooting the shit about all that
.
This is what you might get onthe.
This is the kind of stuff youmight get with all three of us
If you're a Patriot member andyou get the pre-show what we
talk about, all the shit thatbothers us in life.
But this is all good.
(01:09:17):
I mean, look at ham radio.
Like I said, we talked a littlebit of ham radio.
I used it to help ryan uh stayout of traffic.
We had, uh shitty bands for uh,support your parks weekend.
I mean, we made it work.
We made it work.
We made it work.
Even in shitty bands you canstill activate a park and get
out there.
That's all positive, absolutely.
(01:09:38):
Yeah, I got to figure out.
I have to figure out.
I wish there was a way I coulddo POTA.
Or I should try to hunt parkswhile I'm at the baseball games
through my Flex.
Speaker 1 (01:09:54):
Why not You're only
talking about your Flex man.
Speaker 2 (01:09:58):
I know, but the
problem is I'm on my phone
trying to score the game, so Ineed another phone if I'm going
to do that.
I could multitask and do it.
I could definitely do it FTA.
Could I could multi, I couldmultitask and do it.
I just I, uh, I coulddefinitely do it FTA, but I need
the phone to you know in inyour Apple cult fucking uh
(01:10:19):
collection of toys.
Speaker 1 (01:10:20):
You don't.
You don't have a tablet withits own dedicated internet.
Speaker 2 (01:10:23):
No, I do.
Yeah, I mean I guess I couldtake the tablet and do it.
But I mean I'm running a camera, I'm using a phone for the
camera and then, you know, I gotit.
Like I got it.
It's like mounted behind thebackstop with zip ties, right?
So these freaking kids throw afastball, misses, it hits the
backstop, It'll tilt the camera.
(01:10:46):
Then all of a sudden, like myphone blows up, the camera's
tilted.
The camera is tilted, can youfix it?
Can you fix it?
And I got people from Maine hey,my, my, my wife is in Maine
says can you fix the camera?
Like the guy sitting rightbelow the camera, I'm like, dude
, you couldn't turn it, like youknow.
So I have to get up and go andturn it.
(01:11:06):
So I turned it and fixed it.
But I put a second zip tie.
I'm like hopefully this onewill hold, but you can see where
all the you can see where allthe fields that I've played out,
all my zip ties are on there.
So I I have to always rememberto bring scissors, like today I
think I cut down, or yesterday Icut down one, two, eight zip
(01:11:27):
ties.
Wow, you know, cause I've, youknow, all the games and I try to
reuse them, but you know someidiot will come and shorten them
up.
So you know you can't like I'llleave the hook and I can slide
the phone in and out of it.
So, uh, yeah.
So I cut them all down andwe'll start over again this year
.
Speaker 1 (01:11:47):
Well, you'll have to,
you'll have to share that app
with me, because, um so I just Ijust got a message the other
day softball season is starting.
And so you know, they were like, hey, are you going to be
playing softball again this year?
And I was like, well about that.
Uh, yeah, I would absolutelylove to play again this year
(01:12:09):
because I love playing softball.
But I'm like I'm going to begone the whole first month and
then I'm going to be goneprobably two weeks in August
because I figured drive timedown to Huntsville and drive
time back.
Speaker 2 (01:12:24):
Do you play in the
Merrimack League, the COED
League?
Speaker 1 (01:12:27):
No, it's not COED,
it's a men's league.
Speaker 2 (01:12:30):
Oh it used to be COED
.
Oh no, I'm sorry, the Merrimackwas the men's league.
Yeah, the.
Milford one I played was COED.
I played in that when I wasyounger.
You play like a great league.
You play behind the uh, uh,where they have all the dirt and
the dpw.
There's a field back there with, yeah, marcel, yeah, you play
(01:12:53):
there right.
And then that one off just downthe road, off to the left off,
uh, toward oscar, yeah, yeah, yeah, I played in that league.
It was a pretty, yeah, turkeyhill.
It was a pretty competitiveleague when I played in it, like
it was it still is.
Speaker 1 (01:13:10):
There's there's a lot
of uh, there's a lot of really
really good tournament playersthat that are in that league
yeah you know I'm talking like aa's and b's tournament.
It's like I mean, these areelite, elite level players and
they're playing in a beer league.
Yeah well.
Speaker 2 (01:13:27):
So when, when I was
playing, there was a, if you, um
, if you struck out you, uh, youowed it, you owe the team a
case of beer, right?
So there's this guy on anotherteam.
Is that the same?
They're still doing that.
And this dude was like fromengland or something.
He didn't know how to playsoftball.
Like he didn't know how to hitfor shit.
Like he just, I think he justliked that to drink the beer, so
(01:13:50):
he'd show up every game liketwo cases of beer.
Speaker 1 (01:13:55):
Just run the bug out
One for last week's strikeout,
one for this week's strikeout.
Speaker 2 (01:14:00):
Yeah, it hasn't
happened yet, yeah, it was
pretty funny.
But yeah, it was funny.
But yeah it was, um, yeah, they're pretty good.
And then I after so that's whenI lived in merrimack, I played
there.
And then, uh, when I lived inmilford, I joined it was a co-ed
league and uh, I was probablyshit.
I was probably in.
(01:14:21):
I was probably in my late midto late 30s when I was playing
in that league and I was theyoungest guy on my team and I
think the oldest guy was likemaybe 60.
Right, and then we would takelike the dads, like their
daughters, who played softballin high school.
We dragged them in and we gotin trouble by the coach once
(01:14:41):
because he's like you'rescrewing up her swing, you know,
cause you're pitching slow balland she's used to them thing,
and he goes, she can't play withyou until after the season's
over.
So we were always like tryingto find like a wife or someone,
just to cause you had to havetwo.
You had to have two women outthere.
That was like the rule.
So just trying to find yeah, just trying to find a woman that
(01:15:02):
wanted to play was like hardenough.
So anyway, so one time we'rethere and it's like a Sunday
morning and again, we're likethe oldest team probably in the
league and I'm in my mid to late30s and I'm the youngest guy on
my team and we get there andall these young kids like
(01:15:22):
college kids, they're like we'regoing to get our asses smoked.
I'm like I looked at them likeI don't think so.
I think we got this game.
They look pretty hungover andsure enough, they were freaking
wasted.
We freaking smoked them.
So it was kind of fun.
But yeah, our goal of that team, our goal was just to get uh,
just to get off the fieldwithout any injuries.
(01:15:43):
Hey, that's a good goal, likeIf you could get out, the team
could leave without anyone beingcarried off the field or an
ambulance ride or a game in theseason you're doing well.
Speaker 1 (01:15:57):
Yeah, because
accidents happen.
The ball comes off the bat alot faster than people realize
it does.
Yeah, I mean it's slow pitch, but the ball's coming off the
bat.
Speaker 2 (01:16:07):
Some of these guys,
they're hitting the ball for 100
miles an hour?
Are you playing with thelow-flight balls in the
Merrimack League?
Like I think the dots.
No, we use the red dots.
Oh, so you're playing.
I think the blue dots.
I could be wrong.
I think the blue dots are.
I could be wrong, but I thinkthe blue dots are the, the low
(01:16:28):
flight ones.
Speaker 1 (01:16:30):
So like it was just a
little bit softer.
Speaker 2 (01:16:32):
Yeah, it's just a
little bit harder, cause you
know you just don't hit them allhome runs, you know.
So you get a little bit of ofof playing, cause I mean we had
guys that would play with likethe regular they'd hit a home
run.
Speaker 1 (01:16:51):
Every time I you know
slow pitch, they just power it
right through.
It was like what's the point?
Oh, there's definitely thoseguys.
I've still yet to hit one outof the park, but I'll get there
eventually yeah, I used to whenum the hampshire dome in milford
.
Speaker 2 (01:17:01):
I used to live above
it, like up on federal hill, and
it's uh, you know you've beento the hampshire with like the
yep, it's got the cloth, whatever material, and it's
pressurized, and that placefirst opened every wednesday at
like seven o'clock was um pickup softball.
So you pay 10 bucks, you go inand play softball game, split up
(01:17:24):
the teams, and yeah, it wasawesome because it's big enough
you can.
Yeah, I had those, had the lowflight balls and you know you're
in on astro turf but yeah, youplayed it diagonal, so it was
kind of cool.
I don't think they do thatanymore, but they were just
trying to get people in there to.
You know, I mean now it's likethere's so many sports that they
(01:17:45):
got flag football, lacrosse,soccer, base.
Saint age uses that, I think, for, uh, their winter practices
and stuff.
So they're they're booked now,but back in the day when it
first opened, it was like almostempty.
So that was one of the way theycould bring money that's a nice
facility though, yeah thegolfstown one.
(01:18:06):
There's one up in golfstown.
I like it better.
I think it's bigger.
I could be wrong, but uh, thegolfstown one is, it feels
bigger and I don't know why itdoesn't have a track.
So the milford one has a trackaround it but the golfstown one
doesn't.
So maybe that's the difference, but pretty much the same thing.
And then there's where else isthe other one?
(01:18:29):
I think there's one in Bow.
Speaker 1 (01:18:35):
So there's a few of
them around.
They're awesome.
Speaker 2 (01:18:38):
I know there's a lot
of indoor tournaments and stuff
too yeah.
I mean living in the Northeast.
I mean you need that becauseyou know the seasons without
snow or mud or rain are limited.
You know you don't get too manymonths, so you have to have the
(01:19:04):
indoor facilities to to atleast train and practice, at
least for the high school kidsand stuff.
And Bedford has the sportcomplex.
That's a nice place too.
It's got like two hugebuildings.
That has everything in itexcept the roofs.
You can't play baseball there, you hit the roof.
But like soccer, lacrosse, basketball, they got a batting
cage in there and you can doinfield work.
That's where the kids weredoing it last year, but this
(01:19:27):
year they went to the uh, golftown dome and that was uh, they
were able to get more.
Uh, you know they could hit andcatch fly balls and stuff so
you're talking about the?
Speaker 1 (01:19:35):
uh, the sports
complex over by um, it's not
marks uh, the cabaret yeah, right across the street from it
oh, I didn't, I didn't thinkthat was a thing anymore.
Speaker 2 (01:19:46):
Like, oh no, drive
past the entrance, it's all
overgrown, and yeah, I don'tknow it's it's a thing they've
got two buildings, so they gotlike the first building and then
they got the second buildingand they're packed, like when we
were there last year, likethere was, they were playing.
Um, the hell, were they playing?
Yeah, five asides, adult Adultleague Co-ed, five asides Soccer
(01:20:14):
tournaments, and they went allthe way to like two in the
morning, like we'd get Done it,like we'd be done it, like Seven
.
There'd be a seven to eight, eight to nine, nine to ten, ten
to eleven, eleven to twelve, twelve to one, one to two, and
it'd be a whole list and theywere just teams are coming and
going, coming and going.
Speaker 1 (01:20:34):
So so when that, when
that place first opened, it was
uh like 97, 98 somewhere inthere, um, and you know what
they were doing in the, the offtime when there weren't games
going on, they'd run it out anda DJ would come in and they'd
turn it into an all night rave.
That's awesome, that's that'syou know, like when I was 17, 18
(01:20:58):
, like that's, that's the coolthing to do is you would go to
the, the sports complex, go tothe rave part.
Speaker 2 (01:21:06):
Yeah, it's awesome.
Well, they do a boat show theretoo that people don't realize.
So, like they pack that placewith boats, like on trailers and
stuff, they use the parking lotand then they got them inside
and yeah, it's pretty cool, I dolove looking at boats.
Speaker 1 (01:21:25):
I can't afford a
freaking new boat, but I love
looking at them.
Speaker 2 (01:21:30):
What kind of boat do
you have?
Speaker 1 (01:21:33):
What's the?
Speaker 2 (01:21:33):
brand name.
Speaker 1 (01:21:35):
So it's a 1986
Manatee Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:21:39):
Manatee is the
company.
Speaker 1 (01:21:41):
So it's essentially
it's a 22-foot or 23-foot big
bow rider, but instead of havingthe bow rider part, it's got a
cuddy cabin and so you've got alittle hatchway and you can go
in, and then you've got a littlehatch in the front that you can
(01:22:02):
access the anchor andeverything up front.
Speaker 2 (01:22:06):
It's pretty cool for
for an old ocean boat so my
brother has, you know, he gothis big boat but his, his, uh,
he's got a boston whaler, a 19foot montauk he bought.
Those are awesome, yeah.
So he bought it like years agohim and his brother-in-law split
it and they paid 12 grand forit.
(01:22:26):
Then they just bought, you know, the last couple years, a 12
000, 90 horsepower motor for, like the thing hauls ass and he
takes it from, uh, long beach, california to catalina or he has
.
I mean we went when I was outthere we were like three miles
from the island.
We were chasing dolphins andsharks and we were like finding
(01:22:52):
pods of dolphins and then goingafter them.
They'd ride the bow and I got avideo on that that's coming out
too soon.
I think I posted that one.
Did I post that one?
Speaker 1 (01:23:05):
I think I did.
Speaker 2 (01:23:09):
Motherfucking
Catalina wine mixer.
Yeah, uh, but that thing isawesome, right.
So he's telling me he's likeyeah, he goes, dude, he goes.
People like want to.
They come to the marina andthey, they want to.
You know they offer me like 40grand for it.
I'm like what he goes?
Yes, freaking crazy.
And you know they call it theunsinkable boat because, like,
if it flooded with water, it'sstill not going to sink like you
could.
(01:23:29):
Yeah, you know.
So he uh.
So he's like I'm like you gottabe shitting me.
So I started looking.
You know, I got home and Istarted looking at it.
He's there's not a joke likeboston whaler, montauk, 19
footers, 30, 40.
I saw one for 55 000.
I mean, the thing's a centerconsole but there's no cabin to
(01:23:51):
it.
It's like a freaking.
It's like a big.
It's like a big rowboat.
Speaker 1 (01:23:56):
It's a 19 foot it is
perfect for fishing oh yeah,
it's perfect for every.
Speaker 2 (01:24:03):
I mean you can
customize the thing to do
whatever you want, like Like youcan customize the seating in it
.
I mean there's all kinds.
There's like groups, like whatpeople have done to them.
But it's like what's nice aboutit is it's 19 feet so you can
trailer it around, you can useit in the ocean.
I mean it's 30 miles from LongBeach to Catalina Island and it
(01:24:25):
can get rough out there and he'sbeen out there and he's like,
yeah, it's pretty rough.
So what he does is he justwaits for the, he goes to the
ferry dock and he waits for theferry to go over and he rides in
and just tails the ferry overso but yeah, it's a cool little
boat, you know, and it's I'dlove to get one, but I'm like
(01:24:46):
I'm not spending that kind ofmoney on that boat.
Speaker 1 (01:24:50):
Well, you know boat
stands for bust out another
thousand, yeah.
Literally everything on theboat will cost you at least a
thousand yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:25:00):
So.
So when I was out there, one ofhis buddy goes, he goes.
You know what the best thingabout a boat is?
I'm like, no, what he goes.
When your friend has a boat, Iwas like, yeah, or a brother.
Speaker 1 (01:25:15):
Yeah, all the perks
and none of the expense.
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:25:19):
But you know, if you
live I mean, he lives in
Huntington Beach, so he's righton the water.
You know the right.
He's like I don't know a mileand a half from the ocean, two
miles maybe down a bike path, um, so he's right there and you
know they go out to Catalina allthe time and I don't know if
you've ever been to Catalina.
That's where he got married.
It's beautiful island, it's.
(01:25:40):
It's awesome, it's got.
They filmed a western out thereand there's buffalo.
So they had they shipped inBuffalo and then they just left
them there and they keepreproducing.
So there's wild buffalo on thatisland that just roam the
island.
And there's like one littletown.
Yeah, avalon is like the town.
It's like this little cutelittle quaint town, a couple of
hotels and some bars andrestaurants, and then, yeah, and
(01:26:04):
then that's it, and then, likethe rest of the island is just
like natural with wild buffalo.
So yeah, it's kind of cool.
So I wonder if that I wonder Ishould bring my ham radio next
time and go to catalina.
Speaker 1 (01:26:22):
I bet you that's a
park I look, imagine if, if
there's got to be some kind of asmall section as a wildlife.
Speaker 2 (01:26:30):
Yeah, I'm gonna look
that up buffalo right, yeah,
it's got to be something because, um, they've hiked it before.
Like so, mark, my brother, hedropped his brother-in-law and
his fiance or his wife off atone end and they took two days
to hike and camp across it andtwo days later he came back and
(01:26:51):
picked them up at the other end.
Like the length of the island,I think it's like 20.
I'd say it's like maybe 20, 20miles long or something.
You know, it's not super big,but you know enough to hike, but
he hiked the whole thing.
So I thought that was kind ofcool for sure but yeah, and I
did huntington beach when I wasout there and the band sucked
(01:27:13):
when eric was kicking my ass, Icouldn't get like one.
Like I was there for like twoand a half hours I think.
I got like 12 contacts.
I was like this sucks.
It's kind of like you'refeeling so I I feel you when you
said you're four hours 28.
I mean, I'm sure I would havegotten 28 if I sat there another
two hours, but it was tough.
Speaker 1 (01:27:35):
Yeah, sometimes it is
a struggle, for sure.
And then other days, like 10meters will be fantastic and you
don't even have to move off of10 meters, you just sit there.
Speaker 2 (01:27:45):
In an hour you get
100 contacts just on 10 oh yeah,
I, I've done, I, I went through, I I probably did like four or
five parks in a row, meaning notlike in a row, but four or five
parks in a row.
That I did not all on the sameday, not on day after day after
day.
Activation, yeah, activationsthat I just did on 10 meters and
(01:28:06):
would activate it like superquick.
That's why I was like 10 metersis my favorite band for a poda
when it's open.
Speaker 1 (01:28:15):
Well, at least for
the next couple of years.
Speaker 2 (01:28:17):
Yeah Well, even if
it's not open, there's always
someone on 10 meters, eventhough they may not be talking.
It's kind of like I look at itas kind of like the repeater.
Like, even though they may notbe talking, it's kind of like.
It's kind of like I look at itas like kind of like the
repeater.
Like you don't see any activityon the repeater.
You call your call sign,Someone's there monitoring or
listening and they come back toyou.
That's what 10 meters is like.
Like if the bands are shitty, there's always someone out there
that that'll come back to you.
Speaker 1 (01:28:47):
Does it always give a
listen on 28.420, because you
just might find a 420 fan thatloves that frequency.
Speaker 2 (01:28:51):
Yeah, that's where
you'll find the grouch.
Speaker 1 (01:28:56):
I always check and
I'm like alright, it's 28.420.
Is there anybody there?
I get so aggravated whenthere'll be a DX station already
on the frequency, hey man thisis my frequency.
I'll tell you, speaking of heyman, this is my frequency Um, so
(01:29:21):
the the video, uh, fromyesterday's park activation, it
it's.
It's going to have to be like atwo-part video, where one part
is going to be like all right, here's the struggle bus of the
activation, here's the coolcontacts I made, and then the
second part is going to be allthe lids.
(01:29:42):
The lids, because, let me tellyou, man, support your parks.
Weekend brings them all out ofthe woodwork and so, like I mean
, every time you're spinning thedial, you get multiple people
just hard keying, tuning up overother people and get off my
(01:30:04):
lawn.
Get off my lawn, dude, just offmy lawn, like dude, just shut
the fuck up, I know, I know.
Speaker 2 (01:30:12):
I wish there was a
way, like you, could find out
where they are and be like, cause it's ridiculous, cause
they, it's like they're guys, that my guess is that they're
older generation and they don'tlike parks on the air.
But then I hear some of theseyoung guys, some of these guys
don't sound old.
Yeah, that there's younger guysthat are just like you know
(01:30:33):
they're like yeah, I can't standit.
It happens to me all the timeand it pisses me off because I
wish there was a way like Icould send like a voltage to the
thing and just fry their radioand be like boom, that'll teach
you Live free parks on the air.
But yeah, it happens to thebest of us, right?
Speaker 1 (01:30:58):
Yeah, oh yeah, I just
you know, I felt, I felt bad
because, like I know, I knowwhat that struggle is like when,
like you're at a park andyou've got somebody being a dick
on top of you, but like it wasliterally station after station
after station after station.
You know, like you'd, you'dyou'd hear a podo station, and
(01:31:21):
like I would listen for a goodlong while because the bands
were so up and down, you know, like I didn't want to call out
until I could really hear themwell and and so like I'd listen
and listen and listen, and thenout of nowhere there's a DX
station coming right over thetop calling CQ contest and it's
(01:31:43):
like, dude, you clearly don'thear what's going on here, but
this guy's been On thisfrequency for well Over an hour.
I've been listening for thelast 15 minutes Trying to
freaking, get in, like fuck off, like find another frequency.
Speaker 2 (01:32:02):
Well, those, those
contest guys Don't care, they
never even ask.
Like I've been on, I've done a.
Well, those contest guys don'tcare, they don't care, they
never even ask.
Like I've been on, I've done a.
I was doing an activation onceand then all of a sudden I go,
hey, I'm like it's frequenciesin use.
And the guy was like, yeah, Idon't care.
Cq, contest, cq.
I'm like what, like, what doyou mean?
You don't care.
Speaker 1 (01:32:22):
Yeah, no, it's crazy.
Speaker 2 (01:32:26):
It's like they have
priority, like oh, we're doing
real ham radio, like you're justdoing kids stuff right, yeah,
the contest takes precedenceover everything else and I I
don't.
I try not to get into it as much.
I mean, the one time when I wasin north carolina and the guy
wanted to do the net it was likethese guys from Florida and
(01:32:48):
Wisconsin, I guess, they do anet on this frequency every
morning and I didn't have mycamera on I wish I did.
But the guy was like, hey, youneed to get off this frequency.
Or he starts calling the net.
I go hey, this frequency is inuse.
He goes yeah, we use thisfrequency every day at this time
.
You need to get off.
I'm like no, no, I said I don't.
I've been on here for an hourand I've got the log to prove it
(01:33:11):
.
And he goes we've been doingthis net for 20 years.
And you know you, I said, listen, I go, all you needed to
do was call me and say, hey, respond to my calling out, you
know cq poda.
And say, hey, we do a net onthis frequency this night.
Would you mind moving?
And I probably would have saidyeah, no problem.
(01:33:32):
But because you're such afucking asshole, you know I'm
gonna give you a hard time aboutit.
So I just kind of like questionthem and stuff.
And then I said, fine, I'll,I'll, uh, I'll leave, I'll, uh,
I'll move to a different station, you're welcome.
But I said but you know what?
You really should review theetiquette of ham radio and know
that you should call out.
(01:33:52):
And if you don't own thisfrequency and he goes, yeah,
whatever.
So then, as I'm looking for abetter spot, they start talking
shit about me.
So I get back.
I'm like, hey, hey, I'm stillhere.
I said maybe I'll just startcalling cq poda during your net.
(01:34:13):
And the guy was he's such a dick, so the next.
So eric's like, dude, you gottaI call him.
I said you gotta hear that yougotta film me.
So I get it all set up and film.
And then I go right back thesame time, because it was right
down the road from the beachhouse we were staying at.
I'm like I go right back thesame time, I start activating an
hour before and then, sureenough, the guy goes oh hi, this
is so-and-so.
(01:34:35):
And he's like we're doing thaton here.
I'm like, oh, yeah, no problem.
I said, yeah, thank you fordoing that, because your
colleague yesterday was a totalasshole.
And he goes.
I know we talked to him, youknow you were in the right and
we appreciate you leaving.
I said, all right, no problem.
But I was kind of pissedbecause I wanted the same guy,
because I had it all recorded, like it would have been cool to
(01:34:55):
like get him again and then postit.
So yeah he, what a dick, thatguy was so arrogant.
And then he's like those podaguys, you know, they think they
rule the radio or they.
You know, they, you know, Iwish the poda never existed.
He's just going off poda'skilling him radio.
Yeah, I, I should.
(01:35:16):
I should have joined the netand be like, oh, this is wc, I'm
a poda activator.
They probably kicked me out andsay, no, this is only for
Wisconsin people.
Speaker 1 (01:35:33):
I'm just here for the
net and uh and parks on the air
.
Speaker 2 (01:35:35):
Yeah, uh, I don't
know, can't we all just be
friends and share their share?
Speaker 1 (01:35:45):
There's enough.
There's enough room for all ofus.
Yeah, Except on a contestweekend.
Speaker 2 (01:35:48):
Yeah, contest weekend
is no way the last.
What was that?
The big one?
A couple weeks ago, Like Iturned around, yes, CQWPX, yeah,
I looked at.
I was like I've never seen mywaterfall with so much activity,
Like you'd think like a worldwar was going on and like
(01:36:13):
everyone was panicking and itwas like every little I was like
holy crap.
I mean I was making contactsleft and right.
I was like, uh, felt like aloser.
I'm like whiskey one, sierratango, juliet um, new hampshire
one gotta be like what's yournumber?
One, he's like at threethousand.
I'm like two, I'm four thousandthree hundred four zero, zero,
(01:36:34):
zero four right.
I was like I don't care.
Good contact it's good practicetoo.
I mean, if you've never, if youhaven't done um, you know you,
you're nervous about there.
I mean some of the guys youdefinitely listen to how they
work it, but then, um, get onthe air and do it.
(01:36:55):
It helps with your likelistening, like once you listen
to them and you get it to getwhat you need to say out, and
they move on because it isdifferent.
But you really want to pissthose guys off and be like um, I
don't know what, what, what uharea I'm in, you know, and then
they're like where are youlocated?
(01:37:15):
I'm like, uh, america, newhampshire, and they're like you
hear them, like they're goingthrough, like you're thank you,
bye.
They go.
Q QRZ or CQ contest.
Speaker 1 (01:37:28):
What's the contest?
What's the exchange?
What are you looking for?
Speaker 2 (01:37:33):
Yeah, Most of the
time they're just freaking
passion.
Just skip you.
Some of them are alright, butyou get some of those guys down
in Brazil.
Those guys, every time there'sa contest I've gotten the same
guy.
He's got this.
I went on his QRZ page.
He's like on this cliff, overlooking the ocean, like
(01:37:54):
literally like up high, likeprobably like a hundred feet,
200 feet high, and it's like acliff, and he's got like six
towers like huge, Like it lookslike it was like a radio station
towers.
Speaker 1 (01:38:08):
Is it?
Is it's like a radio stationtowers, is it?
Is it w1 asf?
But you know he he's got aplace down in brazil.
Speaker 2 (01:38:14):
Oh, he does yeah, no,
this isn't.
He's not up here all the time.
Yeah, no, this is um.
This guy is like from brazil, like he's got the thick accent
and stuff.
I have to.
I'll have to look him up andtell you what it is.
But yeah, I looked at his cures, the, the, the property is like
and all these antennas are likeout in this field, and then
there's like the cliff, so it'slike antennas right up to the
(01:38:36):
water, but at two, three hundredfeet off the water above it, I
mean, it's like and he'spounding a thousand watts, I
think so like I'm sitting herewith a hundred and he's pounding
1,000 watts, I think.
So I'm sitting here with 100,and he's booming in here.
He's sitting next to me.
Oh bummer, he doesn't haveanything on his QRZ?
Speaker 1 (01:38:58):
I was just curious
because I've talked to Paul
W1ASS a few times and he wastelling me all about his house
in Brazil and how great it isand all that well, doesn't he?
Speaker 2 (01:39:11):
um, didn't he work in
radio or something like he was
in?
I think he.
I think they were on hisrepeater.
They were talking about how hehe was either a DJ or he worked
in radio or he had a radio show.
So he did something in radio,is what they were saying.
(01:39:31):
I've never talked to him, buthey, man, he has a great
repeater and a great spot andit's got a lot of activity now.
Speaker 1 (01:39:43):
Well, he's got a
great network of repeaters.
Speaker 2 (01:39:49):
Yeah, he's got a
great network of repeaters.
Yeah, well, he's trying to.
He wants to take the FortMountain repeater and he wants
to use the same frequency and hewants to go up north and go all
the way up to, like, theCanadian border and have the
same tone.
So you put the one radio on andthen, as you're driving, you
never have to switch, it'll justhave the same tone.
So that you're, you put the oneradio on and then, as you're
driving, you never have toswitch, it'll just be the same
(01:40:09):
thing.
So instead, of you know likesometimes the next hour, right,
just saying kind of like a cellphone would work, but that would
be sweet.
You know the whole state.
You just leave it on onefrequency because I, when I,
when I first got in the hamradio, that's what what I was
like you know it'd be awesome ifwe had like a, a new England
repeater system where, like youhad one, you know you had a you
(01:40:35):
know in California has, likethere's a repeater system that
goes from San Diego all the wayup to you know, yeah, so I said
that would be kind of cool tohave like a new england one you
know to get them all connected.
Speaker 1 (01:40:50):
And well, the funny
thing is, I mean like so the
east coast reflector system, right is, is literally a system
of networked repeaters, but howmany are there that are linked
in?
In new hampshire I don't thinkany.
So it's like oh, the East Coastreflector system in literally
(01:41:12):
none of New England other thanNew York, yeah, it's like we're
our own little country.
Speaker 2 (01:41:19):
We don't exist.
Speaker 1 (01:41:21):
No, massachusetts is
its own country.
Yeah, it's funny.
Speaker 2 (01:41:27):
Like people like out
in California they don't
understand, like you know, likelike the Midwest right, like
Idaho, and like if you ask me,like is it Idaho, is it South
Dakota, north?
Like where are they all?
Montana Wyoming?
Like I kind of know wherethey're at but I'd probably if
you showed me on a map I mightbe able to get it.
(01:41:48):
But if you said is wyoming westor east of montana?
Like I'd probably 50, 50 shotright, like I don't know, maybe
I'd get it.
I'm trying to think becauseI've been the neither.
Yeah, it's south right, yeah, but what I'm saying is like new
England, like people don'tunderstand, like that, and they
(01:42:09):
say, well, is New England likethe Patriots?
Are they?
Are they Boston?
I said, well, they're the NewEngland Patriots.
They used to be the boss, butthey're New England.
They're like, well, what partsof New England?
I'm like all of New England.
I said, but you got Connecticut, where the ones that are in
like the tri-state area of NewYork, they're like, what's the
(01:42:30):
tri-state area?
I'm like, well, that would beNew York, new Jersey and part of
Connecticut.
Speaker 1 (01:42:37):
That's near New York,
maine, new Hampshire, vermont.
Speaker 2 (01:42:41):
Yeah, yeah, we're the
non.
You can just carry a gunwithout a license concealed in
those three states, but don't godown the bass, you'll do a year
in jail.
Yeah, I watched diane and Iwatched the.
Uh, diane, for those of youdon't know, is my, my wife.
(01:43:02):
We watched um, the BostonMarathon documentary, the
bombing oh really, it's reallycool.
Yeah, it was real.
I forgot like they shut down thecity, like I forgot that and I
also in my mind I thought it allhappened like they did the
bombing and it just went intothat night but it was like 101
(01:43:24):
hours before they got him.
You know, when he was in theboat and it was.
It was really, it was reallywell done and it was.
It brought back a lot of it,refreshed my memory.
You know when that all happened.
You know so most people I don'tthink it affected people you
know as much as it would have, like people in New England or
around here that you know we hadpeople.
(01:43:46):
You know I had friends andstuff that were down there and
stuff.
You know it's kind of like anine 11, you know.
But yeah, it was pretty uh andit went and talked about how
they, the brothers, gotradicalized and what their
upbringing was and their fatherand their grandfather.
And yeah, it was uh, it was, itwas.
It was good you should watch it.
But there's one guy, like theywere storming uh watertown
(01:44:09):
because they thought they, um,when they were getting the older
brother and this guy comes outand he goes, uh, and they had
like the cop for him and the copwas being interviewed and he
goes, yeah, and some guy opens,he goes you guys need any help.
And he was like he goes youonly if you have like a 50
caliber gun or something Likejust get in the house, like the
guy probably like had like afreaking machine gun that he
(01:44:31):
just wanted to get out and startshooting, you know you guys
need any help.
But yeah, they had like videoof it, of like that just the
shooting.
It sounded like you know youwere in like a war zone, you
know, right down in Watertown, like they just lit the guy up
and the guy was like walking andthey just he just kept walking
towards him and they just keptfiring and he's just kept
(01:44:52):
walking until he felt like pureadrenaline, I guess.
Speaker 1 (01:44:58):
Well, I'll say if, uh
, if, if, if you like watching
those kinds of videos where, like you know, it's police
interactions with bad guys, theguy that does it better than
anybody else is donut operator.
He's a former navy veteran anda police officer, but he's been
(01:45:20):
youtube famous now for years.
But but yeah, he, he doesexcellent, you know, analysis of
police interactions and some ofthese shootings.
Speaker 2 (01:45:32):
Well, you should
definitely watch it, because
when they, when they got to the, when they found him in the boat
, they tried to get him to comeout.
He wouldn't come out.
So then they were going tobring the SWAT team and set up
and they, they didn't have itfirst go out on the radio.
So they they two guys went upthere and they tried to do it
and then they quietly, but thenit got out.
(01:45:54):
And then the next thing, youknow, like every cop in the air
and they were all leaving likethey had searched and they were
like everyone, like people fromNew Hampshire, rhode Island,
everyone was leaving, they'reall packing up, all the
different state police, themarshals, whoever.
And then all of a sudden, likethey hear it on the radio that
they think they got him, andlike every freaking cop from
(01:46:17):
every jurisdiction shows up andthey think, like all of a sudden
, like out of the blue, it'slike they just start like
unbelievable fire, like it wasjust nuts.
And the guy's like, like theyjust start like unbelievable
fire, like it was just nuts, andthe guy's like hold your fire,
hold your fire.
And what they think is they saw.
They think they saw him with agun and one guy fired and then
(01:46:38):
it was like 200 bullets Chainreaction, just went into the
boat, just went into the boatand um, so then once they got it
stopped and they got the swat, then they then they put in um,
they put in a smoke bomb, youknow a smoke grenade, and that
didn't get him out.
And then they said, well, we'regonna use a flash bomb, but that
boat has a gas tank and it'sprobably gonna catch on fire.
(01:47:00):
It's probably gonna catch thehouse on fire, so let's get a
fire truck.
So they waited to get a firetruck and then he did the flash
bomb and it didn't catch on fire.
So let's get a fire truck.
So they waited to get a firetruck and then he did the flash
bomb and it didn't catch on fire, fortunately, and then he
finally just gave himself up.
But yeah, it was, it was good.
It's a documentary, it's likethree episodes, so it's like a
(01:47:22):
three hour thing.
Speaker 1 (01:47:23):
It was good well,
I'll check it out because I will
say, your last recommendationof Lawmen Bass Reeves, that was
a fantastic series.
Speaker 2 (01:47:35):
You liked that one.
Right, I knew you liked thatone that was so good.
Speaker 1 (01:47:40):
Yeah, yeah, I liked
that one too.
There was a couple momentswhere I was like that's probably
not accurate, but for the mostpart it was a fantastic series.
Speaker 2 (01:47:53):
So I don't know if
you watch the Yellowstone, so
Yellowstone.
Speaker 1 (01:47:58):
I watched the first
what four seasons?
And then they went all wonkyand political and weird so I
didn't watch after that.
Speaker 2 (01:48:05):
So you want to watch
the real, the better ones.
If you've seen Yellowstone,1884 is awesome.
It's got Tim McGraw and hiswife's name, Faith Hill.
It is an awesome, awesomeWestern.
(01:48:27):
I mean, did you ever see themovie, uh?
Or the, the mini series,Lonesome Dove?
Oh yeah, that's old school,right.
So you know how Lonesome Doveis like.
That was, I thought LonesomeDove the first one, all the
other ones that were like shit, but the original one was really
good.
1884 is better than that.
It is so awesome, awesome, likeand so realistic.
(01:48:49):
And tyler shared and theyinterview him.
Like if you go on you can seethe uh, you know they have like
those little clips.
He really tried to.
He had like the, the, theoutfits you know, made by people
to make them exactly the waythey were, like what their
clothes were like back in 1884.
(01:49:10):
Um, he, he talked about likehow, how like the black um
people were treated, how theyreally were, how the Indians
really interacted with the whiteman.
Like it was really well doneand it's an awesome story.
(01:49:36):
And then, and then, when that'sonly one season, and then the
next one came, it was 1923 andit kind of connects what
happened between 1884 and 1923.
And then it goes two seasons ofthat, which gets you to john
dutton's birth of hisgrandfather, or no, john birth
of his father.
So 1923, the, the focus is onhis john dutton's grandfather.
(01:50:00):
So but it's, it's really it's.
They're cool stories, they'reboth.
Those were both good.
I mean 1923,.
I still think 1884 was myfavorite one so far, you know,
and Yellowstone was, like, myleast favorite out of all of
them.
Speaker 1 (01:50:17):
So just take them to
the train station.
Speaker 2 (01:50:20):
Yeah, well, you, you
learn how the train you know.
When you watch those other ones, you learn how the train
station was developed, like howit started.
You do it?
Yeah, so it's not.
Yeah, it wasn't, it's not whatyou think it was.
So, yeah, it's pretty cool.
But, yeah, I'm glad you likedthat one.
(01:50:41):
But, yeah, definitely watch theMarathon Bomber, and did you
watch?
Do you watch?
Um, uh, what is it called?
The one with, uh, billy BobThornton?
He's the oil oil man guy.
Uh, land man, land man.
Do you watch?
Speaker 1 (01:50:57):
that, uh, I'm, I'm in
the process.
Speaker 2 (01:51:01):
All right, that's
good too.
Speaker 1 (01:51:11):
I thought landman was
pretty good, so I was hesitant
to watch that.
Because so like Billy BobThornton for whatever reason, I
guess because I've been watchinghim for so long like I only see
him as certain characters, right Like Bad Santa.
Bad Santa is like the perfectBilly Bob thornton character,
right like it's, perfect, it'sand, and so it was like well god
(01:51:32):
, how can I see him as like anoil exec, like you know this,
like professional fucking rolenow?
Now it's perfect, because it is100% true to a Billy Bob
Thornton character.
He's a fucking mess and he's atrain wreck and it is.
(01:51:52):
Yeah, it's great, yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:51:54):
Yeah, that's a good
one too.
They're making a season two onthat one.
So I'm pretty psyched.
So but yeah, he, that guy TylerSheridan, he did, he was in
like, he was like a, he was thesheriff, I think, in um, what
was that?
Uh, sons of anarchy.
So sons of anarchy, that'swhere he was like like one of
(01:52:17):
the like, one of his startingthings, and then I don't know, I
think he got screwed onsomething and he ended up
getting.
He ended up, you know, writingand producing and slowly, you
know, started making thesemovies and then he got the
contract with Paramount andYellowstone and everything else.
(01:52:38):
He's making millions andprobably making the best TV or
best shows you know recently ina long time, because most of the
shows on TV now are just stupid.
Speaker 1 (01:52:56):
It's, it's
everything's recycled, you know.
But so now, now I gotta I'mgoing to have to go back and
look him up and sons, because II watched the whole Sons of
Anarchy series.
I watched the Mayans and Iloved it.
It was great, it was goodentertainment.
(01:53:17):
There was very little of itthat was actually factual, but
it was fantastic entertainment.
Speaker 2 (01:53:25):
You know what I loved
about it is it takes place in
where I grew up.
So like there was like likethey had, uh, like the ramsey
outdoor store was in it.
Now, the inside wasn't anythinglike the ramsey outdoor store
would be like a bass pro shopright, it was like just a local
thing.
But they had that in there andthey had places that, like I had
been or hung out, I'm like like, oh yeah.
(01:53:46):
So like for me, watchingwatching oh no, that wasn't,
that was Sopranos.
So watching the Sopranos Sorry,I get them confused Watching
the Sopranos was like you grewup in Southern California.
Speaker 1 (01:53:59):
I mean, I didn't know
that about you.
Speaker 2 (01:54:03):
So I watched the
Sopranos first, then I got into
Sons of Anarchy.
But yeah, my neighbor who liveswell, my old neighbor, my house
, or my old house before I movedhere in Amherst, he was in the
Sopranos.
He was the guy that gotfreaking, killed on the toilet
or died on the toilet.
(01:54:24):
Yeah, his name is john johnfiori and he, uh, when I met him
, I met him at like a christmasparty and I'm looking at him and
we're like shooting the shit.
And he's from somerville, so mywife's from somerville, so he
knew some of her, her uh sistersand brothers, friends.
He's a little bit older than me, I think he's like in his 60s,
but uh, he, he got remarried andhe's got like older kids who
(01:54:48):
are adults and he's got like Ithink he's got like a kid, I
think maybe 12 or 13, and like asix or seven year old.
So when I'm sitting there andI'm like you know, it's like
Christmas party and you know thewhole neighborhood and I'm
sitting there, I'm like you know, man, I feel like I've seen you
before, like have we ever metbefore?
And he goes and he's like halfin the bag.
(01:55:08):
He's like oh God, do you knowwhat I do for work.
I'm like, no, what do you dofor work?
He goes, oh, I'm an actor.
He goes.
Do you ever watch Law and Order?
I'm like, yeah, I'm like, oh,he goes.
And the Sopranos?
He goes.
I died on the toilet, you know,on the shitter, so it was just
pretty funny that he was.
(01:55:29):
You know that he was there.
So I'm like, oh, I'm likethat's weird.
I'm like that's weird.
So I get him on Facebook, right, like he friends me on Facebook
.
You know the what do you callit?
The book of faith.
And like all of a sudden, all ofa sudden, I get these like
friend requests from all theseactors.
Not friend requests, but, likeyou know, they pops up and it
(01:55:51):
says, like you may know, and I'mlike what the fuck?
Like all these, you have onemutual friend, you have one
mutual friend you might know, george caluni.
Yeah, yeah, exactly so what wasfunny is this guy, frank, that
lived up the road from me.
He, he is a, he works incameras and he does all the the
(01:56:13):
video.
He's in charge of all thefilming, like for all these
movies and stuff.
Like he gets hired and he'slike the you know the head
honcho for doing like he did theTitanic and you know all those
you know he, yeah, like his jobis to oversee the video
production, right.
So john and him had workedtogether on different movies and
(01:56:36):
never really knew each other.
So I introduced them to eachother.
I said now you guys have workedtogether, but, um, because you
told me you worked on this movie, and he said he was in this
movie.
So, uh, do you guys?
And he goes oh yeah, it's likethey they had, you know, seen
each other on set or whatever, but it was kind of funny like
(01:56:56):
they got like hooked up and theyliterally live like a quarter
of a mile away from each other.
Yeah, but yeah, john was likeOne time we were on a 4th of
July cookout and he's sittingthere and he's like.
He goes, dude, you think she'lllet me go to Boca.
I should be in Boca, I go, dude, you started over, you did a
(01:57:17):
reset, you got like an infant, like you're still changing
diapers and you're 60, so I go,I don't think she's letting you
go to Boca.
But no, he's a good guy and hehe does a lot.
He was the Chappaquiddick.
That was the movie about TedKennedy and the accident where
(01:57:40):
he killed the girl in the carwent over and she drowned.
There's a movie calledChacoodie.
He played the uh, he played theuh sheriff in it and I I told
him I said, of all the thingsI've seen, I said that was your
best one.
Okay, you act, that was a goodrole for you and you did an
excellent job on that one.
He goes, yeah, yeah, you knowthat was.
(01:58:01):
You know we did that.
It only took a couple weeks.
So he goes, he goes, he goes.
I think that because think thatit was.
I think the uh, cause I thinkthe mailman thinks I'm a drug
dealer or something.
I'm like why Cause I get allthese checks in the mail for all
the shit that I do so like whenyou were an actor, like, and
you do something like he did lawand order for like I don't know
10 years or something.
(01:58:21):
Every time a law and order showgets viewed with him in it, he
gets paid.
So he says it goes from likelike his, like he was saying it
was like it could be like athousand, and then next year
it's 500 to 50, 150, 25, 10.
Right, and then it resets, itgoes to a thousand.
(01:58:45):
So like he goes, like I can'teven keep track of these.
They come in left and right, like sometimes it's like it's a
thousand dollars, sometimes it'sfive dollars.
You know, I don't know.
I just I let her deal with it.
He goes.
I think that I think the guy andthen we had a kid in our town,
in our neighborhood, thatstarted stalking him like would
show up at his house and liketry to hang out with him and
(01:59:06):
stuff, and he's like what do Ido?
I'm like tell him to freaking Foff, tell him to get the hell
out of here, right, yeah, like, give me a break.
So, but yeah, it was prettyfunny.
But yeah, he's from Somerville, but he totally fits the you
know, the Italian Mobster type.
(01:59:27):
Yeah, he was.
I think he was, I think he wasthe detective or the.
Yeah, he was the cop in it.
Yeah, but yeah, small world, you know, and you meet him and
you're like you know, he's likeyour neighbor.
I saw him the other day atLowe's.
I'm like, hey man, what's up?
He goes.
Oh man, he goes where you been,he goes you know, he's like
your neighbor.
I saw him the other day atLowe's.
I'm like, hey man, what's up?
He goes.
Oh man, he goes where you been,he goes.
(01:59:48):
You haven't been around.
I'm like I moved, remember hegoes.
Yeah, yeah, I know, but you canstill stop by.
I'm like, yeah, I'm like youcan come by my house too if you

a fever panic, trying to uhcatch up to my level of things,
(02:03:06):
which is absolutely hilarious, like so he fever panic trying to
catch up to my level of faith, which is absolutely hilarious.
So he was talking about thislittle pouch.
It's a really nice leatherpouch.
He's like, oh, this thing is socool, but man, it's $180.
I'm like, well, yeah, but thething is that pouch belongs on a
(02:03:26):
gun belt.
And so I'm like check out thisgun belt.
This is my belt, this is thebelt that I wear every day.
And he's like dude, one hundredand eighty dollars for a gun
belt.
Like I don't even own a gun.
I'm like, well, that'll set youback about $500.
(02:03:47):
But the biggest expense of allof that is you're going to buy a
shit ton of ammunition becauseyou've got to go practice to get
proficient with it.
Yeah, so we're going to have aton of fun in the next episode.
