What happens when three passionate ham radio operators decide to make history with the first-ever 24-hour Parks On The Air activation? The Live Free and Ham crew unveils their ambitious plans for a September 2025 event at Greenfield State Park that promises to combine radio operation, camping, community building, and possibly even fundraising for ham radio causes.

Todd shares his journey of radio removal and reinstallation as he upgrades to a new hybrid Jeep Wrangler 4xe. The surprising amount of dirt accumulated around his mobile installation serves as both a cautionary tale and a reminder of the real-world challenges facing mobile operators. His contemplation about whether to upgrade from his FT-300 to the FT-500 sparks a thoughtful discussion about radio features that make a meaningful difference for real-world operating conditions.

Meanwhile, Eric celebrates a ham radio milestone that was years in the making - receiving his QSL card confirmation from Antarctica, completing his all-continent collection nearly three years after making the contact via FT8. The Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition's card arrives with a charming misspelling that only adds to its collectible value. For DXers, this moment resonates as the sweet culmination of patience and persistence.

The hosts also explore Paul's continuing skydiving journey, with detailed insights into the progression through AFF levels and the value of wind tunnel training. His experience demonstrates how skills developed in controlled environments translate to real-world performance - a principle that applies equally well to developing ham radio expertise.

Whether you're interested in joining the 24-hour POTA activation, contemplating your next mobile installation, chasing DX confirmations, or simply enjoy the camaraderie of fellow radio enthusiasts, this episode offers something for every ham. Visit livefreeandham.com/24hour-poda to learn more about participating in what could become a new tradition in the Parks On The Air program!

I'm watching your February show on YouTube and I
just joined your Patreon at the$5 level, and I see that you

Yes, sir, you can join for aslittle as three hours a month.

(02:48):
It's not a big expense.
Hey, I got another question foryou, though.
On your youtube channel it saysthe hosts ah you can shut it
off after that point.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Well, we miss ryan?
Yeah, we do, we do, but we willestablish that.
Um.
So good on that one.
Um, so yeah, uh, like bobmentioned, uh, you know, you can
definitely head over to ourpatreon, um, and you know, are
you, uh, actually just ourpatreon at this point is
thinking that we are, we'remonetized on our youtube channel
, but we're not quite there yet.
Which actually brings me theother point.
Is, like we are literally foursubscribers away from hitting

(03:25):
500.
Come on, guys, push us over theenvelope, push us right over to
the 500 mark, because we want tobe able to do a giveaway, we
want to be able to do anotherlive stream.
So, you know, if you haven'tsubscribed, um, spread, you know
, definitely subscribe, butspread the word around, let
people know.
You know that, you know we'relooking to get there.
So you know we can add to ourranks there and get more people.
You know, with Liffrey and Hammin their ears.

(03:47):
So good on that one.
And so with that, we've got alive stream.
So obviously, when you hearthis episode, it'll be about a
week later, but we have a livestream.
Yeah, exactly, we've alreadyhad it.
It's our AMA that We've alreadyhad it.
It's our AMA That'll actuallybe out 24 hours after we record
it.

(04:53):
You need to do it yourself.
So that's all you need to doStop the podcast right now.
Head over to dial your phone978-233-1142.
And again, we apologize.
We couldn't get a 603 numberbecause apparently they're so

It would cost some money.
So, either way, all right.
So with that, if you'd like tosupport our show, we could

(05:18):
always use the help and weappreciate all of those
subscribers.
By heading over to our Patreonand become a Patreon member,
like Bob says, you can join foras little as $3 a month, um, and
you get a ton of stuff.
I mean, obviously, this isn't aperfect example, so if you are
watching, uh, this is a a one ofour regular releases of the
week.
We, as a Patreon, uh, we have alive stream where you, the chat

(05:40):
, hang out with us, um, andyou'll get to hear our banter
and hear everything live all themistakes, all the uncut, all
the raw footage, um, all therefor your uh, you know, uh,
consumption and, uh, you know,um, it's just one of the many
things that you know all of ourpatreon members get, uh, as be
being supporters.
So, um, all good, okay, so youknow we don't have anything new

(06:03):
for the mailbag or doing goodthis week, so we are going to
dive right into our favoriteepisode.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
It's everyone's favorite segment.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
And now a little something extra with Todd W1STJ.
Still a general, all right, still a general, okay, cool.
Well, without further ado, letme get into my section here.

(06:40):
So yeah, you've heard it before, this is where we help Todd
study for his extra classlicense.
And I have to say Todd has beena role model, because last week
we shared an example of howthis episode and this section
has helped others reach theirgoal of getting extra.
So, todd, you have led thecharge, even though you still

(07:01):
struggle to get to your extra.
One day, those folks will beable to lift you up on their
shoulders and say, hey, I havefinally become an extra.
So with that, I am going topass this over to our VE quiz
master here.
Paul, go ahead and take it away.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
All right, todd, we are still sampling questions
from every sub-element to tryand get you proficient.
So question number one comesfrom sub element number one.
You might remember this onefrom back in the day what
notifications must be givenbefore transmitting on the 630

(07:42):
or 2200 meter bands?
Is it A Operators must informthe Utilities Technology Council
of their call sign andcoordinates of the station.
B?
A special endorsement must berequested by the FCC, by the FCC

(08:03):
.
C?
Operators must inform the FAAof their intent to operate,
giving their call sign anddistance to the nearest runway.
Or is it D?
An environmental impactstatement must be filed with the
Department of the InteriorVersus the exterior.

(08:24):
Alright, let's see if thestupid song plays which I'm
probably saying.
You're With the.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
Department of the Interior Versus the exterior.
All right, let's see if thestupid song plays, which I'm
probably saying.
You're not hearing it right now.
So, mr N1OG, go ahead and kickit off if you've got to play it.
Otherwise, I'm going to keepworking on this, getting this.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
Oh, just have to cancel the set.
This is like.
All right, I'm going to say aspecial endorsement must be
requested for the SEC, eric.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
We can't hear Eric anymore.
Why?
Because he messed up his sounds.
We can't hear Eric anymore.

Speaker 1 (09:09):
Why?
Because he messed up his sounds.
How's that?
Do you hear me now?
Yeah, you hear me now.
Okay, All right.
Well, did you hear the audiothough the music though?

Speaker 2 (09:18):
right, yes, Okay, well, you should have heard me
playing it.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
Oh, were me playing it?
Oh, were you playing it?
Yeah, I was.
I will not touch a damn thingand not screw this whole episode
up to let it go to hell catchfire in a dumpster.
I'm going to go with B as mychoice and Ted you there in the
chat.
If you want to throw in youranswer, feel free.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Your answer feel free because it's definitely.
It's definitely notify the FAA,alright so, todd, you're saying
C.
No, I'm saying B, b, bravo.
I was joking.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
B is correct and it's A Ted is going with A ted is
correct, my friend I almost wentwith a, but I forgot what the
uniform utc was.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
Yes, so, uh, the utilities telecom Council
notification registration isrequired because of the use of
power line carrier systems onthese frequencies and the
potential for interference withpower line communication systems
.
The process for registration issimple, though, and can be done

(10:38):
at that URL.
And then there's someadditional regulations for you
and your hint.
What was pounded in your headfor the technician license,
state your call sign regularly.
The only answer mentioning acall sign is the correct answer.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
And apparently it was drilled home for Ted big time
tonight.
Nice job.
Quick question All right, no,no, well, damn, this audio All
right.
Well, anyway, keep going.

Speaker 2 (11:15):
Okay, question number two for the evening which of
the following types of noise canoften be reduced by a digital
noise reduction?
Is it A All of these choicesare correct.
B Broadband white noise, cIgnition noise or D Power line

(11:39):
noise.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
I always like the A well, if it's, all of these are
correct, if I pick one of them,at least I got it partially
right.
I don't think it's broadbandwhite noise.

(12:07):
I'm going to go with.

Speaker 1 (12:11):
C, I'm an A guy, for sure.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
All right.
Well, Todd said C, C is wrong.
Eric said A and A is correct.
All of these choices.

Speaker 1 (12:30):
And the only reason why I know it is because I have
ignition wine.
Not ignition, I have fuel pumpwine from my FT-891 install.
So DNR works wonders, includingnoise blinker 891 install.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
So DNR works wonders, including noise blanker.
So DSP noise reduction operatesby examining a characteristic
of signals and noise calledcorrelation and dynamically
filtering out the undesirednoise.
Correlation is a measure of theregularity of a signal In most
digital signal processing.
Correlation is a measure of theregularity of a signal In most

(13:07):
digital signal processing noiseblanker implementations.
The amount of noise reductionvaries according to the
correlation characteristics ofthe noise.
Random noise, such as whitenoise or static, is uncorrelated
.
Speech and ignition noise ismoderately correlated.
Heterodynes and pure tones arehighly correlated.

(13:28):
There you go, learn somethingnew, right, nice as ted says.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
Uh, you know.
Whether there's an all theabove, it's always the correct
answer it Almost.
Almost Not about 99% of it.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
No, it's really not.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
You heard it from Todd, no no, it's not All right,
todd, you're striking out today.
So for the third and finalquestion, this could be strike
three.
Final question, this could bestrike three how much does
increasing a receiver'sbandwidth from 50 hertz to 1,000

(14:12):
hertz increase the receiver'snoise floor?
Is it A 10 dB, b, 3 dB, c, 5 dB, or is it D, b, 3 dB, c, 5 dB,
or is it D, 13 dB?
I?

Speaker 1 (14:33):
couldn't tell you how much does increasing a
receiver's bet?
I would do 3 dB.
I always know that number forsome reason.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
Alright, so you both say B.
B is incorrect.
What is it?
5?
It is 13.
Okay, sure, Alright, here'syour explanation.
The receiver noise floorincreases directly with the fuck

(15:10):
.
The fuck.
Why am?

Speaker 3 (15:15):
I hearing myself.
We have an echo, we have anecho.

Speaker 1 (15:18):
Oh Eric, how about now you?
Good, I didn't touch anything.

Speaker 2 (15:24):
What the hell is that we're good?
What did you?
Do Okay, what the?
hell Once again.
All right.
Receiver noise floor increasesdirectly with increased receiver
bandwidth, since a widerbandwidth allows proportionally
more background noise into thereceiver.
This becomes a log calculationof the dB change from 50 Hz to

(15:46):
1000 Hz as follows 10 logmultiplied by 1000 Hz divided by
50 Hz equals 10 log 20 equals13.01 dB.
If you'd rather avoid the logcalculation and estimate the
answer, then you can considerthat 50 Hz times 10 equals 500,

(16:11):
which is 10 dB plus 500 Hz times2 equals 1,000 Hz.
3 dB equals 13 dB.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
Apparently, your hint is it's unlucky 13 to be near
here a noisy floor okay, sure, unlucky 13, I'll go with that
one, oh boy, so so how many wasthat?
Big loser it was over three, that's a strikeout.

(16:45):
Wow, okay, all right.

Speaker 3 (16:47):
Well, you know it is what it is.
I gotta come back next week touh.
Are we doing this tomorrow too?

Speaker 1 (16:54):
well, we got a live course, we, I.

Speaker 3 (16:56):
If you want to do it tomorrow, I guess I gotta come
back three for three to get atleast get my average back to 500
well, your, your track recordwith live streams is over three.

Speaker 1 (17:08):
So you know, I would have to say you know, you're,
you're, you're, you're.
Judgment call in that one.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
Boss, I'm calling out sick tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
Well then, we'll just have it, we'll do your AI stand
in.
Yeah, yeah, let me.
I'm going to make one, sorryguys a total failure.

Speaker 3 (17:26):
I didn't study this week at all.
I've been just baseball swampedand work.

Speaker 1 (17:33):
So excuses yeah, there are excuses that's totally
fine, man, totally fine.
You know, once we're in thethird year, at that point I'm
not going to be even asking anylonger.
I'll be like when is it goingto come?
I'm not going to be even askingany longer.
I'll be like when is it goingto come, when is it going to be
here?
Alright, I'm going to make onechange here.
Let me know if I get an echohere can't hear you nothing back

(18:05):
to this.
Screw that.
Okay, now I'm back now.
Fine, leave it that way, ted.
Thank you again for theadditional subscribers.
I appreciate those.
You know we're getting just soclose.
I mean, I didn't actually lookto see how many we actually had
total on the page, but I'm surewe're probably just at the point
of 500.
But you know, I'm sure a fewonce we get a live stream
tomorrow we'll do the same thing.
So all good, oh, we're probablyjust at the point of 500,.

(18:25):
But you know, and I'm sure afew once we get on the live
stream tomorrow, we'll do thesame thing.
So all good, oh, we're at 500.
Wow, holy crap.
Well then, ted, we, we, youknow, I'm impressed.
If you've already pushed usover the edge, then you know,
man, you are a number one fanhere in my book.
All right, cool, all right.

(18:48):
So with that, you know, hey, ifyou're studying for your journey
to your technician generalextra class license, then
hamstudyorg is always anexcellent resource for getting a
ticket.
Now, if you recently maybeupgraded your license, or maybe
you just got your license thefirst time, you know, we want to
know so we can recognize you onour next episode for all your
hard work and effort, and youcan always email us at
livefreeandham at gmailcom, oryou can hit us up on the discord

(19:09):
, or feel free, if you're soadventurous, to hit us up on
winlink and send those directlyto N1OG, because nobody else is
going to respond.
Alright well, with that, in ourusual fashion.
You know how's your hamry weekbeen, and we'll start with you,

(19:31):
paul.
No, where'd you go, bud?
We can't hear you.
No audio now.

Speaker 2 (19:42):
Where'd you go?
I muted myself when I, when I,when I opened my beer.

Speaker 1 (19:47):
Oh, well appreciate it.
Yeah, the bush sound.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
Um, yeah, no, I, I, I didn't.
I didn't do any ham radio thisweek, so I have.
I have nothing exciting to talkabout.
Ham radio wise, okay Well.
Hey, nothing exciting to talkabout ham radio, wise, okay,
well, hey, but I'm wearing acool shirt, so send me your send
me your qsls.

Speaker 1 (20:08):
Yep, that is an awesome shirt.
I love that one.
I wore that to uh severaloccasions.
Great shirt.
So you can head over to our uhstorefront over at
livefreeandhamcom pick your ownshirt up too as well.
Um, and so, yeah, thank youagain for Paul for wearing that.
And so with that, since, no hamradio week with Mr N1OG.
How are you said Todd?

Speaker 3 (20:29):
Well, my ham radio week was.
Well, I did do one thing, I didsomething, oops what is that
you bought another Jeep.

Speaker 1 (20:41):
So you want to install another radio.

Speaker 3 (20:44):
Well, I uninstalled my 300.
Oh, you pulled it out.
Oh yeah, and it was easier topull out than it is to put in.
Oh, I'm sure, but what Inoticed is that 300.
That's what she said, sorry.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
That's what she said.
I don't have an audio for that,sorry.
That's what she said.
I don't have a.

Speaker 3 (21:04):
I don't have an audio for that, sorry um, it was
sitting underneath my passengerseat and, man, that thing was
filthy.
Oh, I can imagine it probablysucked every bit of dirt, dust,
crumbs, like I was.
Like I couldn't believe thething even worked.
And, um, yeah, so I got it allout.

(21:24):
And, um, I'm getting a new.
So I bought a jeep wrangler, umfour by e x, e e x or whatever.
So it's partially electric.
The thing's amazing.
It has four or 375 horsepowerand it handles way better than
my other one because it's gotall these freaking batteries in

(21:44):
the middle of it.
So when I go around corners Idon't feel like I'm going to tip
over.
And, um, so I'm going to changemy antenna setup.
So I decided that I wasn'tgoing to undo, I unhooked the
antenna but I left it mounted tothe jeep you know the connector
because I'm going to get abetter, a better uh, and I'm
going to mount it actually tothe side window using a MOLLE

(22:09):
rack on the outside, which I sawat Hamfest.
So the question now is I haveto take a look at it and see
which side I'm putting the radioon and what's the best way to
get it through.
I'm assuming it's probably thesame way, so it'll be on the
passenger side yeah, we'll gothrough like the cover, the cap
or whatever yeah, so now theother question is is do I put

(22:33):
the 300 back in or do I upgradeto a 500?
and eric found someone to buy my400.
Oh oh, did you talk to him?
Yeah he texted me and I toldhim.
I said I don't know where I'mat yet, but I said if I sell it
I'll let you know first.

Speaker 1 (22:52):
You.
Obviously Paul knows who I'mtalking about.
This was Punk Rock, ham Radio.
Oh, alan, yeah, alan, he postedon our internal chat for our
Tuesday night playlist that hewas looking for a 400.
I'm like, dude, I know a guy Iknow he can be convinced that he
could sell his 400 to gethimself that 500 he wants for
the Jeep.

Speaker 2 (23:13):
Yeah.
So I was going to say I won'tsell mine, so definitely not me,
nope.

Speaker 3 (23:18):
So the 300 in my shack when I took it out it's
perfectly flush with my shelfthat I have my monitor on
underneath it Like perfect Okay,it's like it's meant to be
there.
So the big question is, Ireally love the 300, and I'm
afraid if I may not like the 500, I'll be really pissed.

Speaker 1 (23:43):
Has Ryan sold his yet ?

Speaker 3 (23:45):
I don't think he has selling his now, but he did say
I could go over there and he'dtake the head to see what it
would look like like.
Okay, nice.
But I've been reading up on itand it does have some cool
things to it, like the one thingit has is like for low signals
it'll automatically adjust topull in the low signals.
And for us who listen to theepson repeater we have a lot of

(24:09):
quancheng people on hts usingthat repeater and a lot of the
times they're low signal for me.
So I was like, oh, that wouldbe interesting, I wouldn't have
to barely hear them and maybepull it up.
I don't know how well it works,so I'm gonna look on youtube
and see if it really works, ifit's really worth it.
But, um, so that's the dealcool.

(24:31):
Yeah, dude, that's, that's 500,pretty cool or put in the
discord if I should sell the 400and buy the 500 and put the 300
in my shack help todd spend hismoney.

Speaker 1 (24:44):
Yeah, very cool.
Yeah, dude, I you know, let meknow when you go that route.
I like, with all the reviews, with the 1f that's out there,
with the everyone praising thefront facing speaker, which is,
you know, like the biggest thing, that's the same thing on the
500 that's the other thing thatso I had had it on the 300.

Speaker 3 (25:03):
I had this awesome mount that hooked on to the
passenger side headrest and itkind of was a bar, and then he
mounted a little speaker on it.
Now it's pretty awesome, butwhat I found is every time I
would reach into the back, likeif I was using a cup holder in
the back or I had to grabsomething from the back, I would

(25:23):
hit the wire, rip the wire, even though I had it mounted
down, I would always somehow hitit, and then it was always
getting in my way and I was like, oh, I'm, like it would be nice
, I'm gonna be nice if you had afront head speaker, so that was
another.
That's the main reason I startedto look at it and then I found
all these other things go forthe big head.
You need the big head and I haveto get another.

(25:46):
What is it?
67 mount?
Because, oh yeah, it's adifferent thing in the middle
that shows fucking lights whenit's charged.
So that tray's not there.
So I took all the.
I left the tray in therebecause it was pain in the ass
to unscrew it.
So I was like, screw, I'm notgonna need it.
But I took all the uh, I leftthe tray in there because it was

(26:06):
pain in the ass to unscrew it.
So I was like, screw, I'm notgoing to need it.
But I took all the bars and theball joints and stuff.
So I got to call them to seehow I can buy just the, the bar
and not all the other stuff.
Or is it cheaper just to buyall the other stuff?
Because it's gonna?
It's gonna use smaller, um,because it's gonna stick out

(26:26):
farther, it's gonna use realsmall uh bars where you mount
the stuff right.
So I don't know.
So there's a lot of things Igotta.
I gotta figure out and do.
But I just got the jeep thisafternoon and, um, they didn't
even have it all done, so Igotta bring it back tomorrow.
They're allowing me to keep mynew tires that I got my old jeep
on it.
Oh cool, so that's good.

(26:47):
Yeah so, and the only reason Idid it is it was a crazy.
I got a twenty thousand dollarincentive, 20 grand off.
Wow, right off the bat holycrap.

Speaker 2 (27:01):
So that means they've padded it by at least 40.

Speaker 3 (27:05):
No.
So what it is, it's a 24, butit's brand new and I don't know
it was a combination of you got.
The program was the dealershipwas giving employee pricing, the
lender gave some kind of bigdiscount and then the government

(27:29):
has like $7,500 if you buy oneof these cars.
So it was basically like a$68,000 car I got for $34,000
with my Jeep traded.

Speaker 1 (27:46):
Not bad, pretty good discount.

Speaker 3 (27:50):
Yeah, and the guy was like, because I just my wife
has the same kind of with herGrand Cherokee and I've been
driving it to the tournamentsand stuff and it's pretty cool
technology.
So I was like, well, this wouldbe good I could commute to work
with no gas, because you getabout 22 miles per gallon on
electric so that scares the shitout of paul, just to let you

(28:12):
know.

Speaker 1 (28:12):
But anyway, because he doesn't even let his gas take
it down to half halfway you gota full tank if the electric
goes out agreed, but like justthose words if the electric goes
out.
I agreed, but like just thosewords, here's how the electric
works.
Those words cause panic in thesystem.

Speaker 3 (28:28):
You actually have 15% because the motor needs the
electric, especially for likethe torque and the horsepower.
Sure, and the thing moves LikeI was surprised how fast it is,
especially like 0-60.
It's like in five seconds andfor a Jeep that's pretty quick

(28:51):
1.25 gigawatts.
But one of the one of thethings that's cool is it'll say
zero percent but you actuallyhave like 15 and then it
regenerates as you drive.
So when we're coming back fromalbany at our baseball
tournament we're going down thehill in vermont and we were
going down the hill in Vermontand we were at zero and when I
got down to the bottom I was atseven.

Speaker 1 (29:07):
It was almost a hundred.
And it was almost a hundred bythe time you got to the other
side of the hill.

Speaker 3 (29:12):
No, no, we didn't charge you while we were away.
So I mean it does help.
I mean it was pretty cool, andI mean for me commuting, I mean
that's basically I'm filling mytank up twice a week, so now I
want to fill it up at all nice,so we'll see if it's worth it.
More ham radio gear cool, yeah, and I get to redo the whole

(29:33):
jeep though.

Speaker 1 (29:35):
yeah, right the first time wasn't right.

Speaker 3 (29:39):
Come on, I mean, we literally spent a whole lot of
time running wires in your lastconfiguration the ham radio was
was ran in right but where themount was, like the antenna,
behind that tire, yeah, thatmount.
When I took the tire off, thatthing was all rusted.
Oh boy, that whole that.
Remember how we put the newtire, extra tire thing.
It was all rusted.
All the black paint peeled off.

(30:00):
It was just iron rust.
Yeah, wow.

Speaker 1 (30:04):
Dude.
Yeah Well, good, good for you.
Sounds like you know got moreprojects to add to your list.
Now I have some bad news foryou, dude.
I just saw Shane posted onInstagram.
He built his DX Commander overMemorial Day weekend.
Can you tell them we were goingto do it together?
I sent them emails and we werekind of teasing the idea for a

(30:29):
while and then I was like oh, Ifigured after Memorial Day we
would start the ball.

Speaker 3 (30:32):
Who else has a DX commander?
That needs to be built HR20.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
I think he might be our last hope.
We'll see.

Speaker 3 (30:41):
He's too busy to do it.

Speaker 1 (30:43):
He always is too busy .

Speaker 3 (30:44):
I've been clearing that that place is nothing's
getting.
I mean I am.
I've chopped the shit out ofthat where it's going.
Nothing's growing so far.

Speaker 1 (30:52):
So well, good, knock on wood, it stays that way well,
I got a couple.

Speaker 3 (30:58):
You know, after the first week in july I'm I got
nothing to do so he says youheard it here folks and I'm
taking either mondays or fridaysoff, and I can take whatever
day I want off in the summer, sowe'll get it done, okay.

Speaker 1 (31:16):
I gotta get the radio on the jeep, though, first yeah
, well, I can imagine I'm sureyou're chomping at the bit.

Speaker 3 (31:22):
Why are you shaking your head?

Speaker 2 (31:27):
Because you had a perfectly good Jeep with a
fucking radio in it.

Speaker 3 (31:31):
Yeah, but it was costing me like 90 bucks a week
for gas.

Speaker 1 (31:36):
The radio wasn't costing you anything, though I
know you just can sit in yourdriveway and talk on the radio.
Dude, that's really all theimportant parts.

Speaker 3 (31:44):
Just for the commute.
I was kind of havingwithdrawals.
I couldn't call out my callsign.
I was like who am I going totalk to on the ride-in today?
Nobody.
You are radio-less Normally ifno, one answers me, Ralph will
answer me.
He'll always talk to me in themorning.

Speaker 1 (32:00):
Not anymore.
Now he'll think you're mad athim or something because you're
not on the air.
I don't think he's going tothink what the hell's on.

Speaker 3 (32:07):
I don't think he watches the podcast anyway, or
listens to it Every once in awhile.
On another note, are you guysgoing on a deep-sea fishing trip
?

Speaker 1 (32:16):
Nope, no, sir, I do not do deep-sea fishing.

Speaker 3 (32:24):
Zach, sir, nope, I do not do deep sea fishing.

Speaker 2 (32:25):
Oh my god, it's gonna be zach and I are going.
It's gonna be fun, I bet itwill.

Speaker 3 (32:27):
I have my own boat so you might parallel you and show
you where the really good maybeyou can take me and zach
serious like we're just goingfor pick I don't know what the
hell we're doing like small fish.
Maybe we can go out and do somedeep big fish in your boat.
You going to be around thissummer?

Speaker 2 (32:48):
Yeah, I'll be around at some point.

Speaker 1 (32:50):
See if anything, before we go deep sea fishing,
we need to take Paul with hisboat out to that freaking island
that's literally outside, inthe middle of off of Newcastle,
yeah, and basically go activatethat island.
Yeah, you need to do that.
That's an island for sure, allright.

Speaker 3 (33:09):
But okay, all right, you heard it here.
Get your jumps in and get yourass back here.
Come on plans for you, buddy.
Very cool, all right, eric.
So how was your?

Speaker 1 (33:23):
week Well, thank you for asking, todd, I'd have to
say my week I spent probably agood percentage trying to hone a
couple of videos.
I got an eval unit for spoolantenna and I've seen all the
reviews out there from everybody.

(33:43):
Everyone does a littledifferent and I was like all
right, I got to do somethingdifferent because I built the
whole video.
I literally had it all recorded, I was ready to release it and
then I was like this looks likeevery other video, like there's
nothing beneficial from thisvideo, so I scrapped it and
that's a first for me.
So you know I scrapped itdeleted it, sent it to the

(34:04):
recycle bin, said, screw this, not going to do it this way.
So I rerecorded it and Ibasically have do one more
segment with it and it's goingto be, you know, I think it
covers all of the questions thatI asked with every other video
that I saw from everybody elsewho did a spool antenna video
review.
So, and not that they were bad,you know, I just wanted to show

(34:25):
something different, becauseeveryone's like, oh, I can sort
of like an example, like I cansort of see the transformer.
I'm like, screw this, I'mtaking the screws out of the
thing and we're going to look atthe transformer on the inside
to see actually what it's, howit's built.
So, you know, I kind of tore itapart, rebuilt it, you know,
kind of really just, you know,uh, did it in a way that I, you
know I think when I walk awayfrom it I'll be like, okay, you

(34:46):
know everyone's going to bepretty satisfied with the fact
that you know they're going toget something out of it.
So I spent most of the timedoing that.
I got to, I finally got myvoice back.
So I, uh, I got to schedule atime here with Ted, uh, w1ted
because he reached out to me andsaid, hey, he'd love to do a
photo with me.
So you know we got to do alunchtime photo, hopefully maybe

(35:08):
in the next couple of days, depending on the weather, and
we'll see.
Uh, you know what our scheduleis like if they align, um, and
so he was looking to go do thatat uh, which is over in Concord
kind of area.
So looking forward to doingthat with Ted and I'll, I'll,
like, I'll throw it out toanybody else If you got, if you
are interested in doing anotherphoto park with me or, I'm sure,

(35:31):
any of these guys you know, hitus up, we'll be glad, we'll set
something up and we'll, youknow we'll go do something
because it's always fun to beable to hang out with, and you
know we love, you know, obviously, just making contacts
and playing radio and, you know, getting to meet some really
cool people.
So you know that's coming uphopefully.
And then I've got.
Finally, I spent a little time.

(35:53):
I've, you know I'm working onbuilding my mobile all-star node
for the truck.
So the only piece I have leftis to finish fabricating a
couple of the panels that aregoing to go on the back, and
then I'm probably going to buy aRenogy, a hundred watt panel

(36:13):
that's going to be mounted on mybed, which will power some of
the batteries in the truck and, just, you know, recharge them
through some of the, you know, solar controllers and MPPTT
stuff that I have.
So you know, all that's comingsoon.
So if you're interested in allthat stuff, you know, check us
out there.
Um, and I've been getting anitch, man I, I gotta go do a
poda.
Tomorrow might be one of thosedays and I think I'm gonna go do

(36:35):
the rail trail.
Sorry, todd, sorry todd, I Iwill keep it up to like 10
contacts, you know, and so wewill not cross over wait a
minute.

Speaker 3 (36:48):
What time text me before when you're going out
there.
I might have time tomorrow togo out there all right, I'll do
that.

Speaker 1 (36:54):
Yeah, because I probably like right around a
little bit before noontime orright around lunchtime, so we'll
we'll hitch up and that way wecan lunch and just do that yeah,
well, that'd be cool if I'm notin the air.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
Uh, I, I've got.
I've got two parks within 30minutes of me, so maybe, maybe
we can get a park to park.

Speaker 3 (37:16):
Dude, I'm for it and uh free and ham park to park,
just actually.
So I want to work if we usedthe live free in Ham call sign.

Speaker 1 (37:26):
He would have to use a dash slash two, so it would
have to be one, two, three, whatever, yeah.

Speaker 2 (37:34):
So I want to expand on what you said there, eric.
So one of the cool things aboutthis road trip that I took was,
you know, getting to meet mike, getting to meet chris bricker,
um, I know, um, uh, chris radio,uh, life, uh, your life, yep,
yeah, he's in wisconsin, wherehe's just a little bit north of

(37:55):
me currently.
Um, I'm gonna try and meet upwith him at some point.
I'm gonna.
I'm gonna, uh, definitely meetup with him, radio dude, at some
point.
Um, but yeah, if, if you wantto meet up while, uh, while I'm
out here, um, you know, ifyou're a listener and you, you
want to, I'm in illinois, I'm inrochelle, illinois, um, but,

(38:17):
yeah, I'd love to do a photowith you, so hit me up, cool
yeah, you're here.

Speaker 1 (38:22):
So, yeah, looking forward to that.
I'll hit you up, todd.
You know we'll see what we cando about uh, making it happen
and uh, yeah, a bunch of othercool stuff going on the channel
and so you know, if you haven'tbeen a subscriber, head on over
there and hang out with uh me,because there's a bunch of stuff
coming soon, um and so, withthat, we skip totally over this,
and my apologies.
So you know, we're just goingto dive right into it.
Um, really quick, uh, so thisis our usual segment here.

(38:46):
Watch up with mnoj now, asegment where we catch up with
paul on his travels.
Watch up, all right?
Well, so we alluded and paul'stalked a little bit.
So you know, give us an update, paul, what's been going on?

Speaker 2 (39:02):
um, well, all right, so um, I didn't.
I didn't get a lot of skydivingin this weekend, butvised
skydiving, oh the skies are introuble now uh, I'll tell you so

(39:33):
.
Uh, I, I, I premiered a videotoday.
Um, uh, it would have been, Ithink, 11 am your time.
I did it noon here.
No, the other way.
Yeah, reverse the other way.
So 1 o'clock pm East time, which was my video for my AFF

(39:57):
levels 2, 3, and 4.
Aff levels 2, 3, and 4, and thechallenges that went along with
those particular jumps.
Then you get a quick little viewof my tunnel time and the

(40:21):
progression that I made in thetunnel.
For those that don't understand, every time I go up in the
plane I get about 60 seconds 50to 60 seconds of of free fall
time and that's not a lot oftime to like really kind of get
a feel for how you move in thewind and the air.

(40:45):
And, um, so I did, uh, I did a10 minute aff block in the
tunnel.
Uh, so they, they did five, uh,two minute sessions and I'll
tell you it, it's physicallyexhausting, it kicks your ass
like uh, but it was greatbecause it was exactly what I
needed.

(41:05):
Uh, you know it was essentiallyit was the equivalence of of 10
skydives and that amount of freefall time.
So, yeah, absolutely fantastic.
Uh, what a game changer, um,really developed a good sense of
how my body is supposed to bepositioned.
And now I just finished thevideo that's going to be

(41:31):
dropping, probably mid to laterweek this week, where I do my
level five, level six and levelseven.
And those jumps I had so muchfun, um, because I felt good, I
felt confident, I was morerelaxed and I was able to
actually enjoy it.

(41:52):
Um, so yeah.
So now now skydiving is funagain and I'm ready and raring
like I can't wait to get back upvery cool.

Speaker 1 (42:02):
That's awesome, dude.
Like I said, we were talkingand we've been touching upon the
whole entire night, on and off.
Dude, it's really cool to seeall of the progress you're
making and just that by the endof this dude, you're going to be
certified.
That's really cool.

Speaker 2 (42:21):
I'm really.
Obviously it's 25 for the a um,25 jump minimum, 50 jump
minimum for b um.
It's recommended that you get acanopy course in there.
So I'll, I'll, I'll try andfigure that out, because I
definitely want to learn to, tobe a better canopy pilot, I

(42:46):
think.
Honestly, I think that's whereI have the most fun, but I've
got the time, you know.
So if I can fund it right, I'mgoing to just try and get as
many jumps under my belt as Ican, because you know it's going
to be 200 before I can applyfor the C license and that's

(43:07):
when I can put a camera on and,you know, start doing some of
the other stuff.
Cool stuff, right.

Speaker 1 (43:13):
Yeah, very cool.
Yep, dude, that is awesome andwe appreciate, yeah, you know,
keeping us updated on yourprogress.
I mean, obviously you know youcan get more real-time progress
if you go head over to n1og'syou know channel himself.
Become a subscriber and amember there and I guarantee you
will be, uh, very, super happybecause you'll get all of the

(43:38):
real, you know updates, morethan what you're getting here,
which is kind of like after thefact, because it's already
really happened.
He's posting stuff real timeall the time, so go over and
support him there.
It definitely helps him and gethim way closer to obviously
achieving the goals that he'sgot set forth, and so I'm
looking forward to it.

Speaker 2 (43:59):
Yeah, and honestly, I truly 100% appreciate all the
channel members and Patreonmembers that are supporting me
and my endeavors.
You know every, every littlebit counts and it helps.
Uh, so I appreciate everylittle bit that everybody's
willing to give Um it, it, it,it.
It is helpful and it isappreciated.

(44:20):
So thank you Cool.

Speaker 1 (44:22):
Awesome.
Well, where the hell Todd went,I don't know.
You know it's just ebbs andflows, whatever, it's all good.
So you know, cool Outside ofthat, you know you can always go
over and help Todd.
Sorry, you can always go overand help Paul.
You can support him obviouslywith his membership stuff, with
his Patreon, but head over.
If you want to contributedirectly to the skydiving stuff,

(44:44):
you can head over tolivefreeandhamcom and up in the
top right-hand corner.
Every little bit that youdonate helps him obviously get
closer to his goals.
There's a GoFundMe link upthere and you can contribute
there and definitely helpsupport him because we obviously
want to see him be supersuccessful and, you know, meet

(45:05):
all of those goals.
And you know, hey, we get thedirect benefit that you know,
when he jumps out of a plane, you know it's a parachute mobile
somewhere in new England, youknow, and we don't have to wait
for you know us to go tohamvention or Carlos to come up.
This way.
You know Paul fills that needfor us anytime almost anytime.

Speaker 2 (45:25):
It shouldn't be that hard to get him to jump.
Well, and just to throw thisout there, right?
You know that you're addictedto something when you're
starting to sell off Otherthings, all the old things.
Yep, yeah, tell the story.
All right, I just want to throwit out because this radio has a

(45:46):
story it does.
It is the Icom 7,300 that isfamous for falling off of a
table and ending up on theground upside down, and I've had
the pleasure of owning it forthe last year.
Uh, it's been a wonderful radio.
I put rails on it, I bought abigger box for it, but it's got

(46:08):
a new home now and it's going tobe going to its new home next
week in California with FrankHam Radio Wilderness.
With Frank.
He's going to take Shane's oldradio off my hands so that I can
afford to get myself a cookie.

Speaker 1 (46:25):
G35 helmet he could fund his futures.
But yeah, dude, you know, ifanything, I was kind of thinking
of that.
Like when you told me that youwere selling it, I was like you
know, if anything, if I couldhave that radio that had that
story behind it and have it likekind of travel through many
other hands, like the travelingpants even though I hate that

(46:46):
that whole entire movie.
It's like the traveling, youknow, 7300.
It goes on to the next personand frank's gonna obviously, you
know, do something with it andhopefully he has a story to go
and you know who knows what theheck is gonna look like in in
five years, like you know, youknow it's not like it's just a
radio.
It's got stickers on it.
It's got Grouch's stickers.
It's got Shane's stickers on it.

Speaker 3 (47:07):
It's going to end up back with Shane at some point.
That would be hilarious if itmade the full circle.
All YouTubers will have a timewith it.

Speaker 1 (47:17):
Worst off it will probably be in 20 years, when
all of us are touching ourradios from the sky in open air
and change.
Like I want to have, like I seethis, you know, 7300 sitting on
a bench at a you know ham radio, ham fest, and he'd be like
dude.
I remember that radio, that'smy original, first radio and you
know it's still alive and andkicking, so, yeah, that'd be
kind of cool.

(47:37):
It's awesome, sweet, all right.
Well, you know, tonight, youknow we've got a little long,
but we know we're going to kindof just focus on one topic
tonight.
I think, um, obviously Imentioned or alluded to that you
can head over to our storefrontand check out some of our new
shirts.
Um, definitely head over there, check those things out, because

(47:57):
I think, um, you know, you'd bequite presently impressed.
I'm actually gonna probablyhave to refresh some of my
wardrobes, so I'm going to begrabbing a few new ones this
year.
Paul's obviously wearing one ofour latest ones there, the Send
QSL ones, so that's one of myfavorite.
But outside of that, I think wewant to kind of talk a little

(48:20):
bit around and if you've been onour Discord and you, you know,
contributor to our discord andjust hanging out there.
You might've seen a post thatwent out from us about our 24
hour poda.
Now we've been kind of thinkingabout this for a long time.
We haven't seen anything.
You know, todd, I and Paul havebeen kind of talking about how
cool it would be to do this, andso we finally got off.

(48:40):
You know our our.
You know our our.
You know proverbial, you knowuh.
You know maybe what if somedaykind of, uh, you know, perched
there and decided that we'regoing to start this, and so
todd's uh reached out to hiscontacts over at greenfield
state park, and so we are inseptember.
Uh, september was seventh andeighth, I think is what we said.
I have to.

(49:01):
You know, I should really havethe, the actual dates in front
me, but if you want to head overto our Discord, all that
information is there.
We're kind of in the gatheringstage, and so let me get into it
a little bit.
The whole idea around this wasthat we thought it would be
really, really cool that if wecould do a 24-hour poda.
No one's ever done it.
As far as we know, I haven'tseen anybody do like from.

(49:22):
You know, one hour zero to hour2300, 99, uh, 23.
You know 59 um.
You know a full straightthrough poda activation.
Now there's been, you know, obviously, a little bit here and
there, but nothing you know tothat level, and so we thought
it'd be really cool that wecould all get together, we can
make it fun, have a bunch offood hang out and then throw in

(49:45):
the live stream aspect of justbeing able to have, you know
this poda be out there and youknow we can.
You know throw in a bunch ofother cool things like you know
raffle giveaways and you knowonline giveaways, and you know
and, and everybody can come, andthe idea is just, you know, you
know, if you're interested andyou want to be part of it, we're

(50:05):
putting together a form and youcan head over to our website
and go over to liftfreeandhamcom, forward slash 24hour-poda, and
that page will get you to ourform and all you have to do is
just kind of fill it in.

(50:30):
But the idea is we're trying togather a rough idea of how many
people want to come and who'sgoing to be camping and what's
going to be the overall volumeof people so we can give the
park rangers, because this iskind of like a little bit, as
Todd mentioned or may not havementioned, that it's a little
bit out of season and so we'regoing to be tailing the end of
the regular camping season.
We're going to be tailing theend of the regular camping
season, so the park is workingwith us with the idea that we
can do this 24-hour poda andreally just have a blast with it

(50:50):
.
So what do you guys think?
I mean, obviously we've talkeda little bit offline about this,
but what are your feelings onit?
What are you kind of hoping toexpect?

Speaker 2 (51:09):
And maybe we can kind of branch it from there, maybe
build more excitement.
Well, all I gotta say is it'sabout goddamn time that somebody
got todd to get off his fuckingass and start organizing this
shit the park was closed for ayear.

Speaker 3 (51:18):
You can't really give blame him for that, but yeah I
tried last year and the policewas freaking shut down.
Yeah, yeah, so you can't blamehim for that.

Speaker 1 (51:23):
But yeah, I tried last year and the police was
freaking shut down, yeah, yeah,so you can't blame him for that.
But ultimately, you know now,you know now we're in good sorts
.
So you know, now, now is thetime to uh, you know, say shit,
say shit or get off the pot kindof guys.
And so, uh, you know, as paulsaid, uh, let's, let's, you know
, sign up, come on, we've gotabout what I think six people so
far that have interest inwanting to do that and then camp

(51:45):
out for the weekend.
I haven't heard anything fromIzzo yet.
You know how Izzo is, unlessit's his wedding weekend, which
I don't think it will be, butwe'll have to figure that one
out.
Maybe, if it is, then he canhave his wedding there while
we're doing the 24-hour poda andwe'll live stream that yeah,
that's funny so, you know, outside of that, you know,

(52:08):
really, the, the whole premise, guys, is just to set up a
station and operate under, youknow, our current call sign.
And so I, you know, dude, I'venever really promoted this and I
we alluded to it earlier, butwe finally got the, uh, our club
call sign here.
So it's whiskey one, uh, lfh,so they're free, and ham.
Finally, after I, you know, uh,many stupid hours of screw ups

(52:31):
and you know FRN numbers and allof the other garbage that, uh,
you know, sir, you know N1JURcan't read.
You know, for whatever reason,we finally got it all sorted out
.
So we are finally a club call,so we're going to be operating
as W1LFH.
And you know, guys, I'm superexcited because I'm just, you
know, looking at the idea that, you know, we're just going to

(52:52):
set up, have ham radio, barbecue, food, drinks, you know, 24
hours sitting by the campfire, you know, just having a blast.

Speaker 2 (53:03):
You know, what I think is the greatest part of
all of this is I could have aradio station in the trailer,
because I have a radio stationin the trailer, but then I could
also have a radio stationoutside the trailer.
Yep.

Speaker 1 (53:28):
I could operate wherever I want exactly.
You're pretty much suited forboth atmospheres.
So cool, yeah, I think.
Um, yeah, we'll, we'll, youknow we'll have to.
We'll work out the detailseventually.
So, you know, I guess what wecould say to some of our
listeners first is um, if you'reinterested and this you know, I
guess what we could say to someof our listeners first is if
you're interested in this, youknow, definitely get you excited
.
Then, like I said, head over tothat form, fill it out, let us

(53:49):
know your interest.
It's not a requirement, it'snot a lock in.
We're not here to say, you know, hey, you're signing up, but
what we'll do is we'll reach out.
So it's kind of a first come, first serve.
So if you've already filled theform in, you've already sent us
a reply, then make sure, uh,you know we, uh, head over, you
know we, we reach back out toyou, we'll secure your spot, um,

(54:10):
and so you can bring yourtrailer, you can camp, ground
camp, whatever works.
Um, we're going to be in asecluded area of the park so we
won't be bothering other camperswith our radio gear, so we can
be, as you know, loud calling cqas much as we want and having a
couple of campfires and sharingswapping stories, and then I

(54:30):
was hoping maybe I can reach outto a couple of other vendors
for giveaways so we'll be ableto have some really cool
giveaways and so we'll keepthose in the works.
But yeah, if you're interested, sign up and then we'll get you
some more works.
But yeah, you know, if you'reinterested, sign up and then
we'll we'll get you the somemore details from that point and
get you involved.
But yeah, really, I, you knowI'm super excited about it yeah,

(54:51):
I'm super excited.

Speaker 3 (54:52):
The only thing is is I hope we have people that are
willing to do some operating, because it might get really
tiring.
I might be like a blubberingmess.
But CQ, we have to prep theradios to be like automatic,
because I'll be like half asleepyeah, I'll be wasted after he
has his like 30th whiskey abouttwo in the morning.

Speaker 1 (55:17):
Oh god, that those are gonna be the fun operating
times I've said I'm not, and I'mnot used to staying up in it.

Speaker 3 (55:23):
I you know, last year I was like, oh, I'm working
third shift, this will be apiece of cake, I'll do it all
night long.
I do it anyway, you know, whenI'm working.
So now I'm like oh crap, howare we going to stay up?
So I hope people are going tocome and share in the wealth of
trying to keep the poda.
It'd be fun, yeah dude.

Speaker 1 (55:46):
So yeah, with that, I guess you know it's kind of, uh
, one of those things that, uh,we're working out the details,
but we want to, you know, let usknow what we should do.

Speaker 3 (55:54):
Uh, you know like how you count um how many?
How many jelly beans are Freeand Ham get in 24 hours?

Speaker 1 (56:05):
I would have like a bigger prize for that.
That'd be cool yeah, likewhoever gets closest, or the
exact number or whatever we'dhave to have a pre-advanced form
so nobody can go like hey, Ireally said it was 450, yeah it
has to be submitted 24 hoursbefore the day because you know
you don't want to.

Speaker 3 (56:24):
You know the bands can be good or bad or whatever.
Yeah, yeah, it really suck Ifwe were there for 24 hours and
we didn't activate the park.
The bands are so bad.

Speaker 1 (56:33):
Dude, wouldn't that be worse if we had the worst CME
show up on that weekend?

Speaker 3 (56:37):
We would get hazed for like our entire life.

Speaker 1 (56:46):
Aren't you the guys that were there for 24 hours and
inactivated?
We barely made 10 contacts.
Oh, dude, that would be insane.

Speaker 2 (56:51):
Well, so all we gotta do right is, uh, just make a
sheet with an with numbers, right, well, like one through
500, let's say hypothetically, and then people could buy into
whatever number they think oh,slot, right, okay, yeah, yeah,
dude, that'd be pretty cool.
Then they, they buy that numberand that number's then taken,

(57:12):
so nobody else can claim it yeah, like dollar number or whatever
, yeah something like that yeahwhatever, by five for 20 or
something like that you, itcould be, a, it could be 1,000.

Speaker 1 (57:26):
I would love to see that.
That would be awesome.

Speaker 3 (57:29):
I think 500.

Speaker 2 (57:37):
It wouldn't bother me , because I'm going to go until
there's no one left, you knowwhoever owns the 500,.

Speaker 3 (57:47):
You know, if we went over 500, then they would win.
I think it should be.
I would say 1 to 2,000.
2,000?
.

Speaker 2 (57:58):
What that's ambitious .

Speaker 3 (58:02):
Those DXers.
They go a weekend and get like5,000 now all right.

Speaker 2 (58:09):
So ted's in the chat and he says your charity
fundraiser, and I kind of likethat idea, right, like what if?
What if we took, uh, you know, bets, if you will, uh, you know,
not gambling, but put a game achance.

Speaker 3 (58:24):
How about we do it for Delta dog?

Speaker 2 (58:27):
I was thinking the teacher's Institute.

Speaker 3 (58:30):
Yeah, that would be a good idea.
I wouldn't mind doing that,it'd be fun.

Speaker 2 (58:36):
You know, and Ted says he's got a few operators
that can help out.
So that'll be good, we can getthe, we can get the stations
actually rolling.
Yeah, you know we'll.

Speaker 1 (58:49):
We'll definitely have to do, uh, you know, kind of
like a not not not an officialsign-up sheet, but at least get
an idea of like how you knowcommitted folks are for actually
operating.
Because you know I'm sure ifthey're all like me it'd be like
oh cool, I get to hang out bycampfire and drink and talk
about ham radio.
I'll do a little operating hereand there, like my field days
are, but you know we'lldefinitely have to make sure we

(59:10):
keep that train running yeah, yeah, you make five contacts and
just socialize the rest of thetime exactly.

Speaker 3 (59:16):
Yeah, dude, hey, don't give away my strategy, I'm
not looking for that we have tohave someone operating like so
it's got to be on the radiocalling cq for 24 hours.
Well, it can't be.
We operate, we take a couplehours, so come back and operate.

Speaker 1 (59:38):
Oh no, yeah, like people are going to want to hunt
us at any time of the day ornight for that 24 hours and
someone needs to be on the radioyeah, I I think a lot like our
live stream for 24 hours, sowhen that clock starts, there
should always be at leastsomebody on the live stream

(59:59):
making contacts in some form orfashion.
Whoever that is, I don't carelike one camera live stream just
on the on the station we'llhave the one on the station,
we'll we'll throw another oneout there where, uh you know, we
have, uh you know, one thisgood thing I got this new jeep
because, uh, your battery, I gota, I got a.

Speaker 3 (01:00:17):
It comes with a inverter where I can just plug
in and I can run power right offmy jeep.
It's got a pretty big assgenerator battery in there, so
I'm sure we could keep thosecameras charged.

Speaker 1 (01:00:30):
Oh yeah, well, between what Paul brings for
power, my 100-amp hour, yourbattery Jeep, we'll be covered.

Speaker 3 (01:00:36):
I got a 100-amp hour too.
We'll have enough power for it.

Speaker 1 (01:00:38):
Yeah, we'll be covered for a long time.

Speaker 3 (01:00:41):
Yeah.
I'm really excited for it, Ithink we just gotta.
We gotta figure out what datewe're doing it, so we can get
that locked in.

Speaker 2 (01:00:48):
Uh it is september 6th to 7th 2025 oh, is that what
we picked?

Speaker 1 (01:00:53):
yeah yeah, yep that's the one I put on this.
Yeah, because we didn't want todo the weekend after and and uh
, we were figuring it was toocold.
Like september is one of thoseweekends, like it cold at night.
So the closer you get moretowards the end of September, it
gets really cold fast.
I don't want to be in a jacketat two in the morning with a

(01:01:13):
full hat and parka and gloves.

Speaker 3 (01:01:17):
I'm going to call them tomorrow and book and say
so far we've got six campers, orsix people are just showing up.

Speaker 1 (01:01:28):
We have a total of six.
We'll call them campsites, andthose vary with either actual
ground, tent campers or peoplethat are going to bring a
trailer.

Speaker 3 (01:01:39):
We're all going to be in either the field or the
parking lot, wherever we decideto set up.

Speaker 1 (01:01:43):
Yeah, so our big space, that open space, is where
we're going to be plopping.
So you know, you and I cansplit a camp.
We'll rent a camper and we'llsplit it and Paul will have his,
you know, and you know we'llhave space for other people.
So if you know they want to,you know, if Izzo, izzo, you're
hearing this and you'relistening, there's no excuse for

(01:02:06):
why you can't get it on yourcalendar.
Yeah, maybe we can get Walt tocome up and Mike needs to change
his anniversary date becauseapparently that's his
anniversary weekend.
But maybe he can work out adeal with his wife that he comes
, you know.

Speaker 3 (01:02:18):
It's a beautiful park with a beautiful lake.
I've got a kayak you can bringand you guys can go float out in
the water.
Yeah, beginning of septemberthat that lake is like 80
degrees.
It's beautiful.
There you go.
I don't think you can drown.

Speaker 1 (01:02:34):
It's not very deep, it's like maybe shoulder right
I'm sure, mike being a tall guy,it won't be a problem drowning.
But yeah, yeah, all good.
So, yeah, yeah.
So keep your eyes peeled to thediscord.
I mean, in essence, we're goingto try to.
I'm going to create a couplemore things on our website for
folks and we're just going tothe next couple of weeks, pass

(01:02:56):
the word on.
So if you know a bunch ofpeople in the new England area,
you're outside of it and youwant to travel, you know, let us
know, you know, we'll make surewe get you on the list.
But you can head over.
The link is uh in the shownotes, um, and you can uh head
over there and uh sign up andwe'll make sure when we reach
out to you.
You know we've got uh more uhinfo, uh, you know, and details

(01:03:18):
and costs.
So we are going to kind ofcater it, um for that saturday,
so we don't have to spend a lotof time cooking.
Not that we don't want to, but Idon't know about you.
I don't like doing the foodmenus.
I like to cook for fun.
I don't want to cook forthousands or hundreds or even
tens of hundreds.
We'll cater it and we'll havesome of that cost built into it.

(01:03:41):
We'll keep you updated on allthose details as we kind of go
on.
But yeah, block it off on yourcalendar and let us know if you
want to come and hang out, because it'll be a blast.

Speaker 3 (01:03:53):
It's going to be a tradition.
We're going to end up doingthis every year.
Oh, dude, that would be cool.
10 years from now, it'll belike hamvention.
They'll be like we, like buffto rent the whole park you're
like oh, it's off limits.
Ham radio operators?
Sorry, that'd be cool, although, who knows, maybe we'll even
get a plaque or something for it.
Do the 24-hour activation?

(01:04:14):
Hey, dude, that would be cool.
This could be the start ofsomething huge.
So, on another note, um, Ifinally got verification that I
actually worked.
Antarctica what?
Oh yeah, dude.
Back in um december 26, 2021, Ibelieve, paul sent me a text

(01:04:37):
saying dude, antarctica is onft8 oh, you worked in the FDA is
that a Sherpa?

Speaker 1 (01:04:47):
it's all blurred.
Put it out of your chest, canyou?
See it, move it down a littlebit dude it says the 62nd
Japanese Antarctic research.

Speaker 3 (01:05:03):
They spelled research wrong, r-e-s-e-r on their QSL
card expedition.
But they're Japanese.
You know I'd probably spellshit wrong in Japanese if I had
to do it.

Speaker 1 (01:05:14):
I can't even spell in Japanese.

Speaker 3 (01:05:17):
I don't know how to spell in Japanese they spelled
it right on the logo, but on thething it's wrong.
That makes it even more classic.

Speaker 2 (01:05:24):
They sent you a QSL card.
They spelt it right on the logo, but on the thing it's wrong.
That makes it even more classic, Hold on.
So they sent you a QSL card.

Speaker 3 (01:05:30):
Well, they sent it to the QSL Bureau.
Oh, all right, they forwardedit to me, as they do
periodically when I get it.
I only got two in this packetbecause Cause you know, I
haven't been doing much DXingand I got another one from Japan
, and this one was FT eight.

(01:05:52):
This guy is from it's fromGunma, japan.
This was on the 18th of January2022.

Speaker 2 (01:06:02):
Nice, well, I guess something to look forward to
when the Bureau eventually sendsme cards.

Speaker 1 (01:06:08):
Where are they sending them to?
That's one of the things you'regoing to make sure it's not
going back to here.

Speaker 3 (01:06:13):
I've had this one.
I worked in it but I didn'thave really any proof.
It got verified but it was justlike you know what I mean, like
on Confirmed on QRZad, or itgot verified, but it was just
like you know what I meanConfirmed on QRZad or LODW, but
I didn't have anything.
So that's kind of cool.
Well, I'm pretty impressed thatyou're still doing FT8.

(01:06:37):
No, I haven't done FT8.
This was back in 2021.

Speaker 1 (01:06:40):
Oh my gosh, so that was that long ago, okay.

Speaker 3 (01:06:43):
But I finally got it Wow.

Speaker 2 (01:06:48):
You never know.
Yeah, that was, that was.
That was when I was still onlydoing digital.

Speaker 1 (01:06:51):
Yeah he was a serial digital guy.

Speaker 3 (01:06:53):
I was upstairs and he's like dude, antarctica on
ft8 right now.
And I ran downstairs and turnedon my radio and I'm like and
all of a sudden I saw him and Ihit, you know, go, and they
fricking got me like right away.
I was like Holy shit, like Igot all the continents.

Speaker 1 (01:07:16):
Oh boy, yeah, no, I haven't gotten Antarctica in a
while.
Actually, I don't even think Ieven have them in my log.
I'd have to go look.

Speaker 3 (01:07:23):
But man haven't done MNHFD8 either, so you know as we
get older and the FD8 24 hourgets going, we'll travel down to
Antarctica and do it down therethat's actually a good point,
like did we want to do multiplemodes with the 24 hour podo, or
are we going to just do sidebandonly?

Speaker 2 (01:07:44):
why not multiple modes, as long as we're spread
out enough that, like I'm notlistening to do, do, do, do, do,
do, do, do, do, do, do, do dowe do FTA and you're on sideband
.

Speaker 1 (01:07:58):
It's like or we just, like you know, we just operate
one station and then if you'rein your slot, you can play one
of the three you know, becauseI'm sure the CW guys would be
nice, because I don't mindlistening to a CW.
Yeah, like as operator choice.

Speaker 3 (01:08:18):
I'm sure he would.
Kc1 QDK.

Speaker 1 (01:08:21):
He's changing his call.
Yeah, he's got a vanity callWas it?
I can't remember his call he is.
He's got a vanity call.
I can't remember his call.
He's going to a 2x1, so he'slooking for a vanity call now
that he's got his extra.
Sorry, I didn't mean to rub itin you guys, such assholes he
just said to me today on therepeater talking to him, that he

(01:08:43):
finally made a couple of CWcontacts in the extra portion of
the band finally.
So you know he's living thedream man.
Come on, man, if you're havingyour wife quiz you every second
of the day as you're sittingthere doing Game Changer or
coaching for the dugout she'd beyelling in an L-type circuit.

(01:09:06):
You have an AND gate, an ANDgate and an OR gate.
Which one is it?

Speaker 3 (01:09:13):
You know I was hoping because I knew we were coming
on the podcast.
You know I got a lot of court.
I'll probably just be sittingaround and I'll have tons of
time to go through it andrefresh.
I had zero time today.
I didn't even have.
I mean, I was.
I still haven't even finishedall the shit I was supposed to
do today.
I'm like fuck dude, it all goeson the back burner, yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:09:36):
So I don't know if I want to do a 24 hour VE session
with Todd.
There's his.
Ted says a VE session of the 24hour poda, I think.
Hopefully by that point youknow it's two more months in he
should have his extra.
I don't know what do you say,paul?
I think he's broken.
You're frozen, elon gotcha.

(01:09:58):
Oh, we got a screenshot thatthat's a good one.

Speaker 3 (01:10:05):
He kind of looks like his little Oscar the Grouch
there.
It's kind of got the same face.

Speaker 1 (01:10:09):
This is his non-skydiving face.

Speaker 3 (01:10:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:10:13):
This is exactly it.
This is the Grouch-like Dude.
This is a perfect shirt.
I got to screenshot this.
This would be like you ever see, the Bill Belichick shirt where
it says the faces of BillBelichick yeah.
The says the faces of billbelichick yeah, yeah, the faces
of paul.
All right, I gotta scream aboutthat one.
Oh, dude, uh, that was cool, too slow.
We were, uh, we were watchingelon.

(01:10:34):
Uh, you know, take you away andit was like the serious paul
face and we were like dude, thisis like the perfect bill
belichick shirt.
The, the, you know the manyfaces of Bill Belichick.
Oh, it was awesome.
I was like, and then we'll justinsert one with skydiving Paul
and it's like all of the rest ofnon, you know, of the smiling
ear to ear.
Dude, that's awesome, all right, well, you know I don't know if

(01:10:59):
you guys got any more to add Ithink you know we've been at
this for two hours and Ted'sbeen hanging out in chat there
and we appreciate you hangingout with us.
Yeah, we're about two hours atthe two hour mark.
You know any more longer we'regoing to be, you know, getting
into a hammered in workbench, and you know we have a live
stream tomorrow too, which is anAMA.
So hopefully you know we'llhave a big audience and a lot of

(01:11:22):
people Wait.

Speaker 3 (01:11:23):
what time does that start?

Speaker 1 (01:11:27):
That is, have a big audience and just so I'm not
late.
What?

Speaker 3 (01:11:30):
time does that start?
Uh, that is 8 30, so you can bethere like at 8 15 and be okay,
I'll be there early.

Speaker 1 (01:11:32):
Totally fine, man, you know, not gonna affect me,
I'll be there like I'm gonnacome home from work.

Speaker 3 (01:11:36):
I'm gonna get my camera and everything hopefully
working on my new laptop.

Speaker 1 (01:11:41):
We'll go from there okay, you heard it here.
Folks, I'm looking for it.
Yeah, dude.
Well, it's so far, so good.

Speaker 3 (01:11:48):
Dude, I don't know your phone, eric.
If I get in trouble, I needsome help, because I called you
the other day and you didn'tanswer your phone.
Yeah, I know I'm muted, butanyway yeah, you, you're like
nope, I'm not answering thephone tomorrow any paying
clients um, I was just callingyou to tell you that I freaking
the radio was completely filthy.

Speaker 1 (01:12:08):
Oh, dude, I didn't even get your call.

Speaker 3 (01:12:09):
Then if you called me yesterday, I didn't leave you,
I just figured you'd see themissed call.

Speaker 1 (01:12:14):
I didn't even see that I'll have to go back and
look Bummer.
Well, anyway, you're ignoringme like I'm not going over there
on Memorial Day weekend.
Why would I ignore you guys?
I mean, if anything, I don'tmind talking to you guys,
Whether it's asking you 7million computer questions or
whatever.
So all good, Dude.
What did you guys think of theformat?
You like it?

(01:12:35):
Should we keep doing this?
I mean, obviously, one is notreally a whole lot.

Speaker 3 (01:12:40):
What do you mean?
Keep doing it?

Speaker 2 (01:12:43):
This?
Yeah, I think 100%.
We should bring our Patreonmembers in every recording.
They're supporting us andsupporting the show.
I think this is a cool way tointeract with the Patreon
members.
And guess what?

(01:13:04):
If you want to join in the chat, all you need to do is just go
to Patreon.

Speaker 1 (01:13:12):
It'll be posted there and we'll add you to the
Patreon Discord group so you getnotified instantaneously if
you're a part of our Discord.

Speaker 3 (01:13:21):
How many do we have now Patreon members?

Speaker 1 (01:13:24):
Man, I figured you'd ask that Let me go look.
I think we're sitting around.
Yeah, we definitely have to doa Patreon members only live
stream.
Let me see Active members.
We are right around 12.
So we're doing pretty good.
