Dive into the unexpected convergence of amateur radio and skydiving as co-host Paul (N1OG) shares his journey toward skydiving certification. With 23 jumps completed, Paul recounts a hair-raising experience navigating unexpected wind conditions that forced a landing between hangars, resulting in a parachute repair. His candid reflections reveal a surprising preference for the controlled canopy descent over the adrenaline rush of free-fall – drawing fascinating parallels to different operating styles in ham radio.

The conversation shifts to our upcoming 24-hour Parks on the Air marathon at Greenfield State Park (September 7-8), promising food, prizes, and continuous radio operations. We're extending an open invitation to the ham community to join us for this unprecedented activation event.

Eric entertains with tales of his rain-soaked POTA activation attempt and the surprising reaction when distributing ham radio "hammies" to unsuspecting vehicles in parking lots. Meanwhile, a spirited debate erupts about ham radio vehicle setups – how many antennas are too many? The team dissects the practicality and aesthetics of various configurations with equal parts technical insight and good-natured ribbing.

Throughout this adventure-packed episode, we explore how both skydiving and amateur radio cultivate similar skills: technical knowledge, quick decision-making, and calm under pressure. Whether you're fascinated by taking ham radio to new heights or looking for practical advice on mobile setups, this episode delivers with our signature blend of expertise and casual camaraderie.

Join us for this journey through the clouds with your favorite ham radio enthusiasts, and consider participating in our upcoming POTA extravaganza – no parachute required!

Uh.
Before we get into paul'ssegment, we're gonna do our
usual uh, a segment that we'vejust added to the, the roster

(06:16):
here.
Watch up with mnoj now asegment where we catch up with
Paul on his travels.
All right, well, with that, I'mgoing to give Paul the floor
there, because I know he's gotsome interesting tidbits that he
wants to share with us.
So I'm excited to see.
But go ahead and give us anupdate, paul.
How's the flying?

(06:38):
Friendly skies have been going.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
Well, I'll tell you, I've done a lot of jumping this
weekend.
Let's see I got three or fourin on Friday, I got four in
yesterday.
I got another four in today.
I'm up to 23 jumps totalGranted.

(07:08):
Okay, so 25 is the minimum, butyou still got to check all the
boxes.
You still got to show thatyou've learned all the things
that you needed to learn.
So yeah, so I mean it's possiblethat I could do this within the
25.
More likely than not, I'llprobably have to go a couple

(07:33):
over.
So I hit a mental roadblockyesterday.
I tend to, when I have amission right, when somebody
says this is your mission, thisis what you need to do, I get
very hyper-focused on doing itto the best of my ability, which

(07:56):
, in the sky, is kind of anegative, like you really don't
want to overthink things, youjust you want to relax, you want
to letthink things.
You, you, you, just you want torelax, you want to let
everything go, you want to be inthe flow and just be like a
move, move with the wind, instead of trying to fight
against it.
Um, so, yeah, so um, I, I kinda,I kinda wasted those two jumps.

(08:23):
I mean I I wouldn't call it awaste per se, right, because
obviously it was a successfuljump.
I did learn something, I didimprove on certain things.
So, yeah, it wasn't a totalwaste, but it's mentally

(08:46):
defeating when you have achallenge in front of you and
you go up and you try and it'snot working.
You go up again and you try andit's not working.
The instructor was like, hey, man, you want to go again, let's
go again.
And I thought on it, uh, forabout half an hour or so and I

(09:10):
was like you know what Like tobe honest, I'm just I'm kind of
mentally fatigued and, um, youknow, I I I chatted with Carlos
a little bit about it after thefact and, um, you know, he said,
look, he said one, one bigpiece of advice that I could

(09:31):
give you is it is better to beon the ground wishing you were
in the sky than in the skywishing you were on the ground.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
That's a good some good advice.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
Wise wisdom, my friend, wise wisdom.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Listen I I, my friend , wise wisdom.
Listen I I, even though carloshasn't been here, um, I still
I'm, I'm talking to him multipletimes a day.
Um, he's, he's still very muchin like my kind of support
system for this process.
Um, so, yeah, I reallyappreciate it.

(10:05):
I'm now no longer landing inthe student landing area, which
is down the west end of therunway.
I'm now landing where everybodyelse lands.

Speaker 1 (10:15):
I got a question what's the difference?
Like is the?

Speaker 2 (10:19):
grass softer in the student area no Pride.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
It's like all those students they need more space.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
No it's 100%, because the students need more space.
So the west end of the runway,it doesn't have any buildings,
it's got big fields all aroundit.
There is a set of power linesthat you've watch out for and
you know a couple other you knowthings, but for the most part,

(10:48):
like it's a.
It's a much bigger area where,if you, if you misread the wind
and and you, you know, kind ofmisjudge your, your landing
pattern, it's more forgiving.
Uh, so, landing in the mainarea, you're you're also
contending now with othercanopies in the sky, whereas in

(11:09):
the student side, like, unlessthere's other students up there,
like you, you pretty much havethe space to yourself okay uh.
So it gives you, it gives you alittle bit more time to kind of
understand um, you know, youknow the, the canopy flight,
reading, reading, the wind uhyou know, by looking down and

(11:31):
kind of seeing like is the windpushing me left?

Speaker 1 (11:33):
or right.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
Um, you know that kind of stuff, but um so all
right, so jump number one thismorning.
It was my first time in thelanding in the in the main area
Did a good job.
I landed a little bit off but Iwas probably within I'd say 150
to 200 feet of my target area.

(12:00):
Which one was it?
I think it was jump numberthree, yes, jump number three of
the day.
I'll share the landing footagewith you, me and another student
.
We were kind of, I was ahead ofhim and I was lower in altitude
than him, and so the way thatthe priority works is whoever's

(12:23):
lower in altitude gets priority.

Speaker 1 (12:26):
Makes sense.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Obviously, you're going to be landing right,
whereas the person who's uphigher, they can slow their rate
of descent a little bit to givethe lower person more time.
But so as I began my downwindstretch, the other student came

(12:48):
from my left side and I, I, Iwas watching him, like I knew he
was there, I knew he was justabove me a little bit, um, and
he like cut in front of me andso, like, as he came down and
cut in front of me, he ended upbeing on the same kind of level,
altitude wise, that I was, andI was like, all right, well, you

(13:09):
know, it's no big deal, like I,I kind of I, I applied some
breaks to slow myself to, to,you know, allow for that to
happen.
And so then I turned to go intomy final and all of a sudden
the wind picked up, and so wewent from like no wind to now

(13:32):
I've got nine knots blowing inmy face, which, for those that
don't understand, right, so thecanopy that I'm currently flying
, with no wind, will fly atabout 14 knots around, about 14
knots forward, forward, yep.

(13:52):
And so with a 9 knot windcoming at me, right, so now 14
minus 9,.
I lost all my forward speed andso I was flying over a group of
hangers and I was like, allright, I'm not going to make it,

(14:14):
I'm not going to make it pastthese hangers, I don't want to
land on top of a hangar, right.
So now I'm trying to thread theneedle and I'm trying to put
myself in between two hangers, but there's there's tarmac, and
I don't want to land on thetarmac Right, like I want, I
want grass.
So just beyond the, the, theedge of the hanger was grass,

(14:38):
and so I was like, all right, Ican make it to the grass.
The hangar was grass, and so Iwas like, all right, I can make
it to the grass.
And so I, I, I just kind ofworked with what I had, uh, you
know, and uh I landed.
And as I landed and I, I stoodup, my landing it was, it was a
good landing.

(14:59):
But as I landed, the, the windcaught me again and and it threw
the corner of the canopy intothe corner of the roof of the
hangar behind me, oh gee.
So the canopy corner was hungon the corner of the roof and I
was like, well, all right, Idon't want to pull on it,

(15:20):
because if I pull on it it'lljust rip.
So I just kind of went up and Ipicked up on the canopy part
that was on the ground and Iwent to give it like a little
fluff, and just as I did that, the wind kind of just kicked it
off the roof anyway.
But yeah, there was a good fistsize hole in the canopy.

(15:45):
Now I didn't know anything abouthow these things work, what if
you damage a canopy, and who'sresponsible and all that.
I mean, ultimately it was myfault.
And so one of the people thatworked at the drop zone came

(16:05):
into the student room after andwas like uh, well, it's fixed,
um, but it's going to cost you alittle bit.
I'm thinking like you know, Imean, canopies aren't cheap, you
know.
So I'm like did I destroy thewhole fucking thing?

(16:25):
Like what?
What is this going to set meback?
And fortunately it was.
It was very minor, it was onthe end of the canopy, uh, so
they were able to put a patchover it.

Speaker 1 (16:36):
So it cost me 45 bucks well, okay, good, that's a
life lesson, but yeah yeah, 100, it's like he had much of a
choice.

Speaker 3 (16:44):
I mean, you know, the wind changed and he was coming
in and right Like what were youroptions?

Speaker 2 (16:51):
Well, yeah, really, I did everything right in dealing
with what I was dealing with.
I did everything right.
You know, it was just.
Yeah, it was a lesson learned.

Speaker 1 (17:04):
So here, if you want to see the landing uh, I don't
know if I can yeah, for thosethat are on our podcast, uh, you
know, head over to our youtubechannel and it's at about, uh,
the 54 minute mark.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
There you can watch the video all right, so I was
trying to uh 54 minute make itthat's not 54 minutes, that's
when uh well, our patreon ourpatreon, our 54 minute okay, so
whenever we started thebroadcast, count 20 minutes from
there, or you know.
Whatever you'll find it allright, um, so you can see my

(17:44):
mouse.
So this is me on the right handside and this is the other
student over on the left.

Speaker 1 (17:50):
Wow, he was pretty far off.

Speaker 2 (17:54):
Well, so okay.
So originally he was over inthis position where my mouse is,
and and he he cut in front ofme and and then, and then turned
left at the same time that Iturned left.
Okay, uh, so, so, yeah, so, uh,you, you'll see, we're, we're

(18:15):
coming in for landing at thesame time.
We're both, we're both on ourfinal, uh.
And so here it is.
Now you see all the buildings, right, I'm trying to thread
these fucking hangers, oh jeez.
And so there I am.

(18:38):
I landed just in front of thehangar and there the wind just
caught.

Speaker 1 (18:42):
Oh, yeah, okay, the other guy was pretty close to
you too, and the wind justcaught.

Speaker 3 (18:46):
Oh yeah, okay, yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
The other guy was pretty close to you too.
Yeah, so Stop sharing, allright.
So, yeah, so the other guy, heactually he did not have a good
landing.
He had a very rough landing andhe landed on the asphalt.
Oh, ouch.
So, yeah, lessons were learnedall the way around.
You know, nobody got hurt.

(19:11):
Um, you know, so it was all.
It was all good, right?
Um, a little bit of nylonmaterial got destroyed, not a
big deal.

Speaker 1 (19:21):
Yep, wow, oh, good for you, man.
You know, hey, those arelessons that'll help you,
obviously, once you get past theuh official licensing piece and
you know, I'm sure you're gonnahave a little bit more uh of
those you know throughout youryour career.

Speaker 3 (19:36):
But uh, hopefully, uh , nothing that fatal now someone
who was like a licensed, experienced, you know, like a
carlos.
What would he have done toavoid that like?
Is there something you couldthink?
I mean, you didn't have thatmuch altitude and the wind
changed.
I mean, what are you supposedto do?

Speaker 2 (19:55):
no, so all right.
So, like I said, um given givenwhat I was dealing with, I I
did all of the right things okay.
Okay, I maintained you know alevel canopy.
I looked for the clearest openarea that I could find and I
flared and I was ready to PLF ifI needed to Right.

(20:16):
Those are your landingpriorities in that order Level
canopy, clear open area and thenflare and PLF.
For those that don't know, plfstands for parachute landing
fall.
That's the.
You know feet, knees together, you put your you know you kind
of cup your hand over your groinand you just balls of the feet,

(20:39):
calf thigh, buttocks and roll.

Speaker 1 (20:43):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (20:44):
You know.
So if you've seen like any likeairborne training videos or any
of that stuff, like they, theypractice that drill over and
over and over again.
They, they jump off a box andhave to land in shavings and
tuck and roll, um and and itworks.
Like I, I had a bad landing, uh, a few days back where, um, you

(21:06):
know, I, I was a little offtarget and I landed in a, in a,
in a field, instead of you knowwhere I was supposed to be.
Um, but yeah, I, just I tuckedand rolled and everything was
good yeah.
Everything was a little sore but, uh, yeah, so that was, uh,
that was my, that was my fun.

(21:27):
Uh, you know, a littleadventure for my third, my third
jump today, Um jump number fourwent, went really really well,
though.

Speaker 3 (21:37):
Um did you use the same parachute with the patch on
it.

Speaker 2 (21:41):
No, I I didn't because, uh, it had had.
No, it had already been sewnand put back together.

Speaker 1 (21:48):
They were repacking it okay, and so it's like yeah,
so I don't know, that'd be soweird to me.
It's like I'm the next guy inline to get the next parachute.
It's like do I want to knowthat?
That's been half.
You know that all transpired inthe back, just let me not.

Speaker 3 (22:02):
That's my next question.
What, how many, uh, how manyparachute like patches are on
your parachute that you'recoming down with?

Speaker 2 (22:09):
But as far as I know, that's the first one.
Okay, yeah, no, this I listen.
This place is phenomenal abouttheir gear.
Uh, everything is is fairly new, or new.
Um, yeah, so I think.
I think that was the first holein that, in that.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
The good news is not your own parachute.
Thank God you know.
You'd be more mad at yourself,I'm sure.
Yeah, I mean definitely uhwould have been a little cheaper
fix, but you know but so I I've.

Speaker 2 (22:47):
I've found that my favorite part of skydiving is
the canopy right.
Like I don't, I don't mind thefree fall.
I have a lot of fun in the freefall when I'm not trying to
chase an objective.
I can have fun in the free fall, um, but I'm the happiest when
I'm under that canopy as soon asthat thing opens, yeah, so when

(23:13):
you're doing the parachutemobile, are you?

Speaker 1 (23:19):
your pre-fall time is shortened drastically, isn't it
for that whole process?
So you get more flight time.

Speaker 2 (23:24):
Canopy time yeah, so what carlos does is, uh, it's
called a high pole and so, um,so the the aircraft gets up to
altitude, everybody gets out.
You're the last one out becauseyou're, you're the one that's
going to stay up the longest.
Yeah, um, and as soon as you,as like as soon as carlos exits

(23:46):
the aircraft, if you watch likewithin you know five to eight
seconds his parachutes over hishead okay, right right, so you
know.
essentially then he's got from13 000 feet to 3 000 feet where
he can play before he has tofocus on his landing Got it.

Speaker 1 (24:07):
Yeah, interesting, that'll be fun times, I'm sure,
trying to figure that, thatprocess out for yourself.
I'm sure I mean Carlos would begreat for the tips and
suggestions.
But it'd be like that firsttime you're trying to like,
unravel the HF cord, get theradio set up.

Speaker 3 (24:24):
Us to win and fly off course and he'll be like, oh
crap to.

Speaker 2 (24:29):
To be honest, like I mean, I'm, I'm, I'm just, I'm
kind of looking forward to likejust being able to take an ht
yeah, that's right, start smallright, yeah, like just to have
an ht with me and have you know, you know, a hand mic or
whatever and just call out on5-2.

Speaker 1 (24:48):
That works for me, man, you could do that all day
and I'll be like, okay, cool, another one in the book, another
one in the book, it'll be afree for all.
It'll be a pile.
I'm trying to get Paul, I'msure it's the same for Carlos,
but yeah, cool, wow, but yeah, cool, wow.
Well, so what is this?
You said 23 so far in the logand you think the end of this
week you might be certified uh,yeah, so depending on on weather

(25:14):
and everything else, um, yeah, definitely by the end of the
week I, I should have my license, that's's awesome.

Speaker 3 (25:23):
Now, paul, once you get your license, is there a
requirement to do so many jumpsper year to stay licensed, or is
it like you're just licensedforever, whether you do it or
not?

Speaker 2 (25:37):
No, you have to maintain currency For an
A-licensed student.
Carlos will correct me if I saythis wrong.
I'm 99% positive that it's 60days.
As a student, I can't go longerthan 30 days without a jump, or

(25:58):
I have to go back and kind ofprove that I still know the
skills.

Speaker 3 (26:04):
So, wait a minute, you have to jump every 60 days.
Yeah, what do you do in thewinter?

Speaker 2 (26:11):
You go south.

Speaker 1 (26:14):
Seriously, that's tough.

Speaker 2 (26:18):
Or you don't go and then in the spring you do a
recertify, you do a recurrencyyeah, but is that what you're
doing?

Speaker 3 (26:27):
You have to do all the things you're doing now, or?

Speaker 2 (26:31):
so, uh, I'm I'm not, uh, super knowledgeable on the,
the recurrency requirements, um,but I know that you have to.
You have to go with aninstructor that can supervise
and just make sure that yes, you, you do still know the things
that you should know.
And then the instructor saysyeah okay, either you know

(26:53):
you're you're good to continue,or now you should probably, you
know, do this how does carlos doit?

Speaker 3 (27:00):
because he lives in the snow belt.

Speaker 2 (27:06):
I don't know because I mean, but like, if you think
about it like I mean, carlosgoes down to Huntsville and he
goes down to Florida a coupletimes Like I mean he's probably
getting his jumps in regularlyenough.

Speaker 1 (27:20):
So you're going to have to.
Yeah, I mean once every 60 days.
You know, every 60 days isn'tterribly hard to do, but you
know it may be completelydifferent for the D license.

Speaker 2 (27:28):
I don't.

Speaker 3 (27:29):
I don't have that knowledge, Not on the top of my
head Cause I'm thinking like peproll ends, like you did your
first jump, your tandem jump, and that was like the last week,
right or weekend or it wasending.
What month was that?

Speaker 2 (27:43):
That was what weekend or it was ending.
What?
What month was that?
That was what october.
That was october.

Speaker 3 (27:48):
Yeah, the pepper shuts down october, 31st, right,
so you have.
So if you jump on the 31st, youhave november, december.
You have to have another jumpin before new year's yep so
that's gonna go

Speaker 1 (28:00):
south so this is gonna be, like you know, your
snowbird season.
You're gonna literally have asnowbird season.
It's like this is the way it'sgonna be.

Speaker 2 (28:09):
I'll be like all right, um, can I?
Can I just go hang out inflorida for the summer?
You?

Speaker 1 (28:14):
know no the winter winter, right, yes, yeah, the
winter.
Yeah, it's always.
You don't want to be down thereduring the summer, that's hell
gotta get my jumps in.

Speaker 3 (28:23):
I got you, should I?
I wouldn't.
I'd be curious to see how thoseguys you know those pepper old
guys that jump and theinstructors, and how they do it.
Like are they constantly justheading south to do a jump to
stay current?

Speaker 1 (28:36):
Or maybe they just recertify, like when the spring
rolls around and it's not as notas complex of a you know
process.

Speaker 3 (28:42):
You know until Paul gets that we won't know, yeah,
who's recertifying them, causeeveryone's in the same boat up
here.

Speaker 1 (28:48):
I know, hey, you're good, I'm good, you're good.

Speaker 3 (28:50):
Let's just jump out and see how it goes.

Speaker 1 (28:54):
We all make it.

Speaker 2 (28:55):
Then we know we're good.
I'm sure, I'm sure a bunch of.

Speaker 1 (29:01):
New.

Speaker 2 (29:01):
England, people that head south for the winter.
Even you know like I mean I'msure, probably you know like the
Carolinas area stays warmenough that they'll jump you
around.

Speaker 1 (29:15):
Yep, wow.
Well, dude, that's awesome.
I know Carlos has beenback-channeling us and giving us
like, hey, this is Paul's airtag, you know, here's the
airplane tag, you know tag.
And giving us like, hey, thisis paul's uh air tat, you know,
here's the the airplane tag, youknow tag.
And he's like he just did this.
He just texted me like, I know, dude, he catches this up too,
so, but it's like good to seehis side of it.
So you know, we appreciate himuh that's cool keeping todd and

(29:35):
I into the loop.
You know, it's like a special,uh, you know, update.
Obviously you're in the sky, soit's like we don't know like
until you get down and settle.
It's like oh, it's like, oh,you just took off.
Like, oh, okay, cool, I likethis.
Like you know, play by play.

Speaker 2 (29:48):
Yeah, I just think, well, there's, there's two
planes here now.

Speaker 3 (29:59):
So, oh, flying through the sky right now, if
he's just plummeting to theearth, sure he is when you're
thinking it I'm sitting therescoring baseball games.
I look up I see a plane.
I'm like oh, that could be thatcould be paul not that high.
You know how you said that.
You know your plane or your, your canopy goes 14 knots.

(30:21):
You ever see, like when, uh,they do like military drops,
like especially like duringworld war ii, and they just bail
out of the plane and they gotthose round parachutes like are
those just dropping and noforward motion or are they just
like kind of you just land whereyou land?

Speaker 2 (30:38):
yeah, you're at the mercy of the wind with those I
think, there is somesteerability, but not not like
the square canopies.

Speaker 3 (30:46):
You know what I'm talking about.

Speaker 1 (30:47):
If they strap those same parachutes to the tanks and
jeeps they fling out the back.
I'm sure there's very littlesteerability.
It's wherever they decide todrop them that they hope they
land right.

Speaker 3 (30:55):
Yeah, but those paratroopers, those guys are
freaking.
They just drop them over treesand shit.
It's like go for it.

Speaker 1 (31:06):
That's and shit like it's like, go for it like that's
just, it's nuts, a lot of themjoin red bull after.

Speaker 3 (31:09):
So you know, yeah, that's the way it goes.
Well, they.
I've seen like now, what arethose parachutes, paul, that are
like super skinny, like highlymaneuverable?
Uh, those are probably somelike some type of sport, canopy
yeah, like they're real thin andthose guys are like they whip
around.
You see them coming across andthey do loops and yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (31:30):
So.
So one of the one of the guyshere, um, I actually I got to
jump with them, um I think, three times the other day.
Uh, his name is patrick patrickkessler.
Uh, he's a, a world championcanopy flyer.
Like, oh, wow, he, he teachesthe, the, the teachers how to do

(31:52):
the canopy stuff, like.
So I mean, literally I've, I'vegot the greatest source of
information all right here.
Right, you know, that's where,like, I mean's, it's I'm having
a hard time, where I'm likecould I stick around just a

(32:14):
little bit longer and learn somemore things.
And you know, because I mean, after I get license, the cost of
each jump dramaticallydecreases.
So it's like, I don't know, Imight stick around for a little
bit longer.

Speaker 1 (32:36):
Oh no.

Speaker 2 (32:40):
We might be doing a 24-hour poda in Indiana.
Well, no, because a 24-hourpoda is after Huntsville so I'll
already be in Alabama by thatpoint.

Speaker 1 (32:48):
So you'll have to leave, but you could always go
back.
It's not like you wouldn't goHuntsville, then back to Indiana
.
You might get that calling.

Speaker 3 (32:57):
When do they close?

Speaker 1 (33:00):
Carlos doesn't jump at Huntsville, does he?
Or does he?
So then the question bearsasking does he?
Oh yeah, Are you?
So then the question bears theasking are you?
Oh yes, Okay, All right, Cool,Wow man.

Speaker 3 (33:12):
How much does it cost to rent a canopy?

Speaker 2 (33:16):
It depends.
I want to say here it'ssomewhere around $70.

Speaker 3 (33:23):
Per jump or per day.

Speaker 2 (33:26):
I think, for the day.

Speaker 1 (33:28):
That's not bad.

Speaker 2 (33:30):
And then it's $10 plus a tip for packing if you're
going to pay to have it packed.
So how?

Speaker 3 (33:42):
much would a jump cost?
So you get licensee tomorrowand you want to stay around jump
again.
How much is it going to costyou to jump?

Speaker 2 (33:51):
so it'd be.

Speaker 3 (33:52):
It'd be the cost of the rental for the day um which
is the 70 yeah, yeah, and thenit's, and then it's 30 per load
so, so it's 100 for one jump, and then it would be 30, 40,
right like 40, yeah, like 45bucks each jump and so the

(34:14):
question is then how, if?

Speaker 1 (34:15):
I'm paying somebody else to pack for me if I'm
packing it myself, then you knowit just Now, how many total
jumps in a day can you usuallysqueeze in max Like what's?

Speaker 2 (34:30):
there was, there was a student here today that did
eight jumps.

Speaker 1 (34:36):
Oh my.

Speaker 2 (34:37):
Uh, I mean some of the, the more experienced people
um, you know, they've, they'vesaid like 20, 25, like they can,
they can they're literally likethey're landing, they're
dropping their rig, they'regrabbing another one and going
right back up okay.

Speaker 1 (34:55):
And who's packing their rigs?
Somebody on the ground'spacking, I'm sure yeah, the
packers.

Speaker 2 (34:59):
Yeah, especially like for the tandems.
You know, like I've seen somany tandem instructors, where
they're literally they'rethey're taking their, their,
their container off and throwingit down and they're running to
the, to the loading area with anew one.
Or there's a new one waiting atthe loading area and they're

(35:21):
just running over there grabbingit gear, check it, throw it on.

Speaker 3 (35:23):
And they're just running over there grabbing it
gear, check it, throw it on, andthey're gone now when those
instructors right, they're notpaying to use the, the, the
canopies and stuff, right, they're, probably they're,
they're getting paid, they'regetting paid to do it, so
they're.
So that's a good gig for you.
Just become an instructor.

Speaker 1 (35:45):
Yeah, that's a lot of instructor yeah, that's a lot
of jumps to get to that pointthough, right yeah yeah, that
would be after my license.

Speaker 3 (35:53):
Yeah yeah, so so that guy that did 20 jumps, that's
600 bucks and he'd have to havea lot of parachutes.
That's a lot well, I meanthat's assuming that you're
talking about a person, that'syou know paying for every single
one yeah, serial jump too thatmany times yeah the guys that

(36:18):
are, the guys that are like theD class or the regular jumper.
How many shoots do they own?

Speaker 2 (36:26):
I don't know honestly .
I mean I.
So I was talking to.
I was talking to patrick uhtoday while, while he was
packing his parachute, I wasasking him questions about the
size of his parachute and thestyle of it and everything else,
because, um it, it's reallythin like, um, like when it's

(36:46):
inflated.
You know what I mean.
Like the the profile of it isreally thin um and I I think he
listed off like six or sevendifferent ones that he owns.
Wow, you know.
I mean, obviously he's heavilyinvested, like you know and how
many, how much do they runaround 10 to 15 grand a lot, a

(37:13):
lot of radios.

Speaker 3 (37:16):
My gosh jesus that's a lot of money a lot of steak I
guess this is not a cheap hobby.

Speaker 2 (37:24):
All right so, uh, all right, so the 7300 is sold oh,
he was gonna ask frank get ityet uh, I'm gonna.
I'm gonna ship it out tomorrowor tuesday, depending on which
which day I have more time.
The 706 mark 2g that I've gotwith me, um, I've got somebody

(37:45):
that says that they, they aregoing to buy it.
I'm just waiting for a payment.
Yep, um, but so those tworadios together gives me about a
grand, and my plan was to buy ahelmet and an altimeter so that

(38:05):
I had my own helmet my ownaltimeter.
But now I'm kind of wonderinglike should I just take that
money and put it towards morejumps?

Speaker 3 (38:16):
What does a helmet run you?

Speaker 2 (38:19):
About $500.
Altimeter An altimeter is $400to $500.

Speaker 1 (38:29):
Wow, yep, jesus, yep, about 500 bucks altimeter,
altimeters four to five hundred.

Speaker 3 (38:32):
Wow, wow, yep, yep honestly, you don't want to like
skimp on that stuff, it's youcan't, you really can't.

Speaker 1 (38:37):
Sadly, can I get the?

Speaker 3 (38:42):
discount brand.

Speaker 1 (38:43):
It's so much it works like 70 percent of the time see
, that's why in ham radio youhear the term ham genuity.
You don't hear that inparachute being as a skydiver
it's not skydive genuity, youknow, because it's not like you
know, guy right while I'm inthere buying the kwan shang
altimeter?

Speaker 3 (39:02):
uh no, it's like version, it's close, it's really
close.
You're buying the the yasibrand, right, paul?

Speaker 2 (39:08):
probably yeah no, 100 like, uh, the, the stuff that
I'm looking at is is quality,because I'm I'm literally I'm
looking at it as like I'm, I'mgonna buy this helmet.

Speaker 1 (39:22):
This helmet's gonna be good for the next fucking 20
years yeah, it's not like amotorcycle helmet or anything we
have to replace a couple years.

Speaker 2 (39:28):
Yeah right and same with the altimeter, right like
I'm gonna buy it once and I'mgonna use it for the for the as
long as I'm skydiving, yeah, andthen eventually I'd like to get
my own parachute rig, and thattoo will you know.
Like it, it'll be a all rightwhat it learn, what I want and

(39:55):
what I like and what I cancontrol and what feels good by
using.
You know, rental stuff, andthen you know, maybe try and
find something used initially, save a little bit of money.

Speaker 3 (40:10):
Yeah, Eventually, I'd like to have my instead of
having buy, buy us a beer.
We should have buy us aparachute.

Speaker 1 (40:17):
Well, if we continue the trend, we're working.
You know, maybe we can justwork on that one, maybe we can
just get sponsors for it.

Speaker 3 (40:25):
Everyone could take a little square of it and have
their name on it.

Speaker 1 (40:29):
We got to get into monetization first and we
probably should get somewherebetween 10,000 to 20,000 subs
before we start asking people tojump in.
Oh, yeah, yeah, Trust me, I'mat 4,300, and I have gotten zero
when it comes to any sponsorsreaching out to me to say, hey,
would you come do this?

(40:49):
Nobody does.

Speaker 2 (40:52):
Like I have to pay.

Speaker 3 (40:54):
Not that I would do sponsors on my YouTube channel
because I'm not about that I'mtalking about on your parachute
dude, as you're coming down likeRight.

Speaker 1 (41:05):
Reliance antenna on the top.

Speaker 3 (41:09):
W1 SPJ.

Speaker 1 (41:10):
You're going to sponsor directly.
He's a platinum donor you know,I would be willing to bet that
you could probably screen printthe nylon Dude.
You don't even have to like, you could do just your parachute

(41:31):
, like we'll just get you acustom parachute you know what's
the Apparel like a jersey.
Apparel like jersey, whatever.
Like you know how motorcyclesand all the guys who do dirt
bikes have all of like their youknow patches on, like the race
car drivers with their race carsuits.
Bikes have all of their patcheson, like the race car drivers
with their race car suits.
We'll do the same thing withWe'll just put all our Except.

Speaker 3 (41:48):
we'll just stick our stickers on them.
Oh, you got to take that.

Speaker 1 (41:52):
We've got to reposition that one.
That one's going to be over theleft chest instead of the right
because he's paying more, andthen, during free fall, all the
stickers come flying off.
And then, paul, when you land, make sure I'm going to Disney
World.
You say that they want to hearthat.
Yeah, oh man, that's funny.
If you're listening to thispart and something inspires you

(42:14):
such to want to become a Spanzer, just send us something.
At LiveFreenham We'll have asidebar discussion.
Maybe there's some rich, centric listener or subscriber
that says I got money, I'm goingto support Paul, I'm all game.

Speaker 3 (42:27):
I promised our, uh, my, my secretary that I'd buy
her a house and a car.
Uh, one of these, uh, what isit?
The Dodge charger, fullyelectric muscle car.
It's pretty sick, has to havelottery.
No, I said, if I did, I wasgoing, going to buy this and
I'll buy you all your parachutegear.
What would your wife say?

(42:48):
She doesn't know If I win likea billion dollars, it's going to
be like a drop of the dime, gotit?

Speaker 2 (42:56):
So how often are you buying lottery tickets?

Speaker 1 (42:58):
I know right, you got to start.
That's the problem.

Speaker 3 (43:00):
I buy them when they get up to like.
When they get up to like soyour odds are really good.
Over anything over seven, 50,.
I start buying them.

Speaker 1 (43:11):
You heard it here, folks.
This is that's Todd's secretformula.
You and 7 billion other peopleright, you know what.

Speaker 3 (43:20):
But I figured the more people that know that I'm
going to be donating things tothem, that maybe I'll get a
little bit more luck on my side.

Speaker 1 (43:29):
Maybe, or you might get a whole bunch of those
ambulance chasers looking foryour money.

Speaker 3 (43:33):
No, no, because it's all before, like if they accept
it and say I'm going to do thisfor you, oh, that would be
really nice and thank you.
But you're never going to winthe lottery, and then I win it,
it's already done, Right.
So I'll get you a, I'll get youa parachute.

Speaker 1 (43:46):
Well, you know, it sounds like it's a good segue.

Speaker 2 (43:48):
Very nice of you and I will accept it Okay.

Speaker 1 (43:52):
It sounds like a really let's shoot for smaller
goals.
Like you know, I'm thinking youknow extra right.

Speaker 2 (44:00):
So there's a good segue, and now a little
something extra with Todd.

Speaker 1 (44:02):
It's everyone's favorite segment and now a
little something extra with ToddW1STJ Still a general, that was
a good segue, nice job.
Are you editing and putting inthe picture now, after the fact?

(44:27):
Is that the that the oldpicture, or is that?
No, that's a new one.

Speaker 3 (44:28):
You gave me right.
Yeah, but I didn't even see it,did you?

Speaker 2 (44:31):
see it yeah, I saw it .

Speaker 3 (44:34):
Okay, you did, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, I didn't see it.
Okay, that's weird.
You didn't hear even your voice.
I heard it, but I didn't seepaul's either.
So I thought y'all like oh you, that's weird, why am I not
seeing it one more time?
No, just kidding, it must be,it must be a mac thing, right?

Speaker 1 (44:53):
yeah, that's, I'm gonna go with that one.
I like that answer, all right.
Well, you got control of theaudio too, my friend, since I am
uh, you know, am crippled here.

Speaker 2 (45:04):
Yeah, no worries, I got the hot keys recommended by
three out of four of these.

Speaker 1 (45:13):
Oh, yes, sorry.

Speaker 2 (45:14):
My mistake Okay.

Speaker 1 (45:18):
I should read it.
Well, we're here to help studyTodd's extra class.
Thank you, paul, for kicking mein the ass.
Each episode, we always pickthree questions for the next
question pool to test hisknowledge, to get his upgrade,
and so, with that, head on overto check out hamstudyorg.
As always, we support them and, like Paul said, four out of
four VEs are always going totell you hamstudyorg is the best

(45:40):
way to go.
And with that, I'm going topass it over to our VE
Quizmaster and me, being a VEmyself too as well.
Take it away, Paul.

Speaker 2 (45:51):
Welcome to the club.
Thank you, sir.
All right, Saad, For your firstquestion.
It's from sub-element numberseven, because we're doing all
questions now.
The question is what is meantby the term op-amp input offset
voltage?
Is it A, the output voltage ofthe op-amp minus its input

(46:18):
voltage.
B the difference between theoutput voltage of the op-amp and
the input voltage required inthe immediately following stage.
C, the differential inputvoltage needed to bring the
open-loop output voltage to zeroor D, the potential between the

(46:45):
amplifier input terminals ofthe op amp in an open loop
condition?

Speaker 1 (46:57):
That one's just a you know, not a layup.
I couldn't even figure that oneout.

Speaker 2 (47:04):
Oh, I believe that I remember that I couldn't even
figure that one out.

Speaker 3 (47:07):
Oh, I believe that I remember this answer.
I think it's B, but between Band C.
But I'm going to go with Bbecause that's what I thought
first.

Speaker 1 (47:14):
You know, c tends to be the most common answers in
these.
You know, select multiplechoice ones.

Speaker 2 (47:23):
So we're going to go C.
All right, todd said B, b isincorrect.
Eric saidc as, as I thought, isthe correct differential input
voltage needed to bring the openloop output voltage to zero.

(47:43):
So your explanation An op-ampis DC powered and when simply
connected and powered up with noother components, the output
will contain a DC bias.
However, applying an inputvoltage will result in it being

(48:03):
amplified and combined with theDC bias, leaving a new output
voltage.
So your hint the correct answerhas the words differential and
zero.
So think about a scale.
If it's offset, you try to getthe scale to show zero when
nothing is on it.

Speaker 1 (48:24):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (48:25):
It's not a bad hint actually.
Yeah, that works all right.
All right, no big deal, no bigdeal, okay.
So question number two whattype of radiation pattern is
created by twovelength verticalantennas spaced a

(48:45):
half-wavelength apart and fed180 degrees out of phase?
Is it A a figure-eight orientedalong the axis of the array, b
cardioid.
C, a figure-eight broadside tothe axis of the array, or is it

(49:10):
D, omnidirectional?

Speaker 1 (49:20):
I'm going to say I think it's C for me, because I
just finished watching.

Speaker 2 (49:25):
Eric, you're supposed to let Todd answer.

Speaker 1 (49:27):
Yeah, I know he was going to go C anyway.
Either A or C, I think it's C,yeah, and the reason why I think
it's C is because I justfinished watching a video from
Callum.

Speaker 2 (49:42):
All right C.

Speaker 1 (49:44):
Apparently, I wasn't paying attention to the video.
Well then, a yeah.

Speaker 3 (49:50):
You know, this is what drives me nuts.
There's like one difference.

Speaker 1 (49:56):
Yeah, you would have thought 180 degrees out of phase
Figure eight along the axis Go.
What's the answer?

Speaker 2 (50:01):
Okay, along the axis go.
What's the answer?
Yeah, curious, okay.
Uh, so the most significantsignificant factors here are the
elements are fed 180 degreesout of phase and are spaced a
half wavelength apart.
In a half wavelength, a radiofrequency signal differs by 180
degrees from the source, so youcan also say that the elements

(50:22):
are spaced 180 degrees apart.
Therefore, when the signal isleaving one element and reaches
the other, it is in phase withthe radiation from the element
it's reaching, and so the outputof each element reinforces the
output from the other.

Speaker 1 (50:39):
Sounds almost like a Yagi then.

Speaker 2 (50:42):
And so then here.
So memory tip 180 degreesdegrees has an eight, so it's a
figure eight.
Answer the signal is out ofphase, so the pattern is
oriented along the axis, I hopethat helps you next time maybe
all right, so you're over twothat's all right, you're, you're

(51:04):
still.
you're 0 for 2.
That's alright, You're still atbat.
Here's your third and finalpitch.
What is the relationshipbetween the AC current through a
capacitor and the voltageacross a capacitor?
Is it A?

(51:24):
Voltage and current are inphase B.
Current leads voltage by 90degrees C.
Oh, Uncle Elon, Did I freeze?
You're good now.

Speaker 1 (51:44):
We didn't get D, though.
What was the?

Speaker 2 (51:48):
answer for D.
I didn't read D yet.

Speaker 1 (51:50):
Okay, well, we thought you got covered.

Speaker 2 (51:53):
Fire D All right or is it?
D Voltage leads the current by90 degrees.

Speaker 3 (52:11):
B, all right, all right.
I'm going to say Stop doingthat, god.
I think it's either B or D.
I'm going to go with D.

Speaker 1 (52:35):
I'm going to go with B, my friend.
Okay, well, todd says D whichis incorrect.

Speaker 2 (52:38):
I'm going to go with B, my friend.
Okay, well, todd says D, whichis incorrect.
See We've had this questionbefore.

Speaker 1 (52:47):
We've had this one before.
Yes, we have.
I think that we had thisquestion like four times already
.
That's why I was like it wasalways currently folded 90.
That's why I was like B, b,okay, well, todd, you struck out
folded 90.

Speaker 2 (53:01):
That's why I was like okay, Todd, you struck out, but
Eric, did you get?

Speaker 1 (53:06):
two out of three.
Two out of three, I believe youdid.
I did, of course, two out ofthree ain't bad.
There we go Nice All right.
Well, as always.
So if you are on your journeyof studying for technician
general, extra class, like Todd, you might be struggling with

(53:26):
some of these things you mightbe, but, dude, eventually you're
going to come out of the fog.

Speaker 3 (53:30):
You're going to come out, I know, but it's like I was
doing well and I just crashed.

Speaker 1 (53:34):
I know, I know, hey, it happens to the best of us,
man.
We all move forward.
This is the problem.

Speaker 3 (53:38):
It's like one word Current leads voltage.

Speaker 1 (53:41):
And you've had some distractions.
Man, baseball has been adistraction for you.
Now that it's fading, you mightget back on the horse and
things will get going.
And so, just like Todd, eventually we'll get back into
the groove of things.
Maybe you've been working andstudying your technician general
or extra class and you'vereceived one of those levels,
and so, hey, reach out to us,let us know.

(54:03):
You can send us an email atlivefreeandham at gmailcom.
You can hit us up on theDiscord.
You can just let us know andwe'll make sure we make sure we
mention it on our next episode, because we want to celebrate
with you, because it isimportant.
We like to see people get theirupgrades and get into the hobby
too as well.
So, with that, keep pluggingaway, guys.

(54:23):
Ham study is an awesome tool forthis and, just like Todd knows
you, eventually it willeventually click, it'll get
there.
You can do it.
You can do it.
The mud dogs suck again.
So, with that, in our usualformat because why not know, why
not?
What's been the ham radio weekfor you guys?
I know, with all those stupidstorms and everything, what much

(54:45):
of a ham radio week can we have?
But you know, what can youcobble there together, mr OG.

Speaker 2 (54:52):
Well, so, while my ham radio has been limited to
listening to the air bands onthe Yaesu.
FT3D.
I did have a small group ofpeople this evening that were
like, oh, that's your radio, because I just leave it sitting

(55:15):
on a picnic table.
And I was like, yes, I'm a hamradio operator.
And they were like, oh, whatdoes that mean?
And so I tried to explain it inthe most layman kind of way
where I didn't get technicalabout it.
I was like, okay, so I, youknow, there's licenses, uh, in

(55:41):
ham radio, just like there isn'tskydiving, and currently, right
, carlos and I both are extraclass ham radio operators.
We hold the highest licensethat there is in ham radio,
which just gives us some morefrequencies and abilities and
you know things that we can do.
I was like, but, uh,essentially it boils down to

(56:02):
there's there's hf where we cantalk to people really, really
far away, and then there'sradios like this one little ht,
and I was like it's three tofive miles, unless you're like
that sesame street episode nearfar it was.
It was kind of interesting tosee like just blank fucking

(56:25):
stares on their face and thenwhen I explained kind of like
the differences in the distance, they were like oh okay, sure
right, you didn't share any ofthe contact.

Speaker 1 (56:37):
Like, hey, I made a contact with new zealand and
they didn't say why did you makea phone call to do that?

Speaker 2 (56:44):
no, I mean, I did, uh , I did, you know, preface it by
saying that like um, you know,I've, I've made hf contacts from
, you know, my home to japan, and you know to the middle east
and you know, and everywhere inbetween, right, you know, to try
and kind of show them the, the,the range, I don't think

(57:09):
they're going to be ham radiooperators anytime soon.

Speaker 1 (57:11):
So question how old do you think they were like
younger older?

Speaker 2 (57:15):
oh no, definitely younger.

Speaker 1 (57:17):
I would say maybe, maybe early 30s okay so, yeah,
that would make sense, whethernot knowing the connectivity of
that part, because they don'tknow anything except internet.
So that's what goes man yeah,it's a tough thing, man, all
right.
Well, dude, that's awesomeeither way.
Hey, you know I, whether or notyou planted it well, whether or

(57:38):
not the seed germinated, youplanted it.
You know, that's the way itgoes.
Maybe 10 years down the roadthey'll bump into somebody else
at a park bench and they'll belike what is that?
And they'll be like oh, Iremember this guy telling me,
you know all about it, so cool.

Speaker 2 (57:52):
Or maybe the next time Carlos is down the drop
zone they'll ask him.
You know, hey, can you show uswhat you're doing?

Speaker 1 (58:02):
Yeah, that's the perfect guy for it.
I mean, he'll spend hours and,you know, keep working that one
so awesome.
Okay, well, that's not bad.
You know that's ham radioadjacent and focused.
I'll go for it.
You know like I can't bring agreat story to the table except
for you know like I can't bringa great story to the table
except for you know what I'llshare with the hammies.
But uh, you know, cool on thatone.
All right, well, you know, overto you, todd, how's your ham

(58:23):
radio week been going?

Speaker 3 (58:25):
yeah, I'm pretty shitty yeah yeah, I haven't done
much.
I haven't even been on.
I, I did get on the net.
Uh, let's see yesterday.
So, uh, so you did that.
Yeah, I, I don't have a radioin my new Jeep, so I'm still in
the debating on what to do.

Speaker 1 (58:44):
Here's the good news there's a light at the end of
your tunnel there, the end ofthe woods.
If you've got time this weekand you're not tied up and doing
all this shit, give me a holler.
I can come over and help youget something back in the Jeep.

Speaker 3 (58:57):
Well, the question is do do I buy the the new 500?
Yeah, or do I keep the 300?
And uh, you know, the more Ilook at the 500, even though
it's so fricking expensive it is, um, it does have a lot of
things I like about it, and themain thing is the speaker.

(59:18):
Look at Paul's grin.

Speaker 1 (59:21):
Like I know that's like.
Well, you just jumped out of aplane, right now You're frozen
man.

Speaker 3 (59:25):
That's his happy grin I got to screenshot this one.

Speaker 1 (59:28):
I need this for the t-shirt.
Yeah, definitely.

Speaker 3 (59:31):
Anyway, um yeah.
So the big, the big thing isthat the speaker is in the head
and I've been kind kind oflooking at my new Jeep and I
could really keep it clean, because the way the new screen
is for the radio and stuff isthere's a space between it.
I could run the wire through soyou wouldn't even see it, and

(59:54):
it has that speaker Instead ofhaving the speaker that I had.
That was kind of coming off myheadrest and kind of floating
there and there.
So I don't know, I'm, I'mdebating, I still have to buy
the, the mount, because my oldmount won't fit, cause it's a
different, it's a differentsetting, okay, hey, you're back.

Speaker 1 (01:00:14):
You were frozen there and your smiling face.
So now I literally have thethree pictures I need for hear
no evil see no evil.
Pipe Paul, and it's just goingto be here.
No parachute see no parachute.
I've jumped with the parachuteperfect so.

Speaker 3 (01:00:31):
I don't know so let me know, if any of you guys out
there listening to this, if youhave the 500 or the 300, or
you've had the 300 and switch tothe 500, I'd love to hear what,
uh, what your, what yourthoughts are.
Um, is it worth the money?
Is it?
Am I just being foolish becausethe 300 works totally fine and

(01:00:53):
so I like 400?
I have the 400 and, and that'sthe other thing.
So you know, I got a guy thatwants to buy it, so that would
offset my cost to buy the newone.

Speaker 2 (01:01:07):
Right, take a couple hundred bucks off, put the 300
in one location, put the 300 inthe other location, whether
that's shack and truck, you know.
Vice versa whatever.

Speaker 3 (01:01:18):
Well, the reason is the other location, whether
that's shack and truck, you know, vice versa, whatever, well,
well, the reason is is thespeaker stuff.
So the speaker was is mountedin the 500.
There's one in the head, so youcan.
You don't need an externalspeaker, right?
Okay, so that's the big thing.
But the 300 I took and it fitsperfectly in my shack underneath

(01:01:40):
, flush with my, my shelf, theshelf.
So that would look really cleanin the shack.
So that's another thing I waslike and the 400 is just maybe.

Speaker 2 (01:01:51):
Maybe you should talk to people that own the 500 and
say, how good does that speakersound?
And you know, because I I'd bewilling to bet it's probably not
great yeah, I heard it.

Speaker 3 (01:02:05):
It's actually pretty good and it's probably no
different than the speaker, thecheap speaker, the twenty dollar
speaker that I have that sitsnext to my head uh, normally so
the problem with that is it's.
I'm always freaking.
Every time I reach for the back, you know, to get something out
of the back seat or something.
I'm always ripping it off orhitting the wire because I

(01:02:26):
forget it's there and so I don'tknow, I'm just being but
remember the new?

Speaker 1 (01:02:33):
well, you could go, you wouldn't have to do the 500,
you could do well.

Speaker 3 (01:02:37):
Actually, no, the 500 is now the 510 it has that,
that new technology I know, which is pretty slick yeah,
that's, that's the other thingthat really is is because I was
like you know, I'm not spendingthat just for the speaker, but
then when I saw that rasps, thatthing is pretty awesome.
So, like, if I'm on the epsomrepeater and all those guys that

(01:02:58):
are using those quan shangs andare barely, you know,
scratching you, push that button.
Oh yeah, it clears it all up andall of a sudden it's like
you're dealing with a normalradio again.
So that would be huge.
Yeah, so I don't know, I gotta,I'm gonna go to ryan's, he's
gonna bring it out and we'regonna see what it looks like in
the car and I'll make a decisionafter that yeah, cool.

Speaker 1 (01:03:20):
Yeah, I mean, I'm probably going to make the leap
to.
Although, what's the differencebetween?
Oh, that's right, so you havethe 510 dr asp yeah, and then
you have the regular 510 dr,which doesn't have the asp.
So right, I mean it's worth it.

Speaker 3 (01:03:36):
It's worth it, it's worth getting the asp.
You're going to spend that kindof money.
You might as well get the topand you're not going.
So I mean I would go with the.

Speaker 1 (01:03:42):
It's worth it.
It's worth getting the ASP.
If you're going to spend thatkind of money, you might as well
get the top and you're notgoing to spend that much more
because you're getting moneyback on the 400.
Now, I like the 400.
It's nice.
It's also older.
So if it actually breaks you'rekind of screwed because they
can't get parts for that thinganymore.
Screwed because they can't getparts for that thing anymore and
I don't know where repair wiseit stands on the repair market.

Speaker 3 (01:04:01):
What do you think I should sell it for?
I don't even know no clue.
I like the 400.
I mean, it's got a huge screen,it's pretty simple to use.

Speaker 1 (01:04:12):
Is it 400 DR?
Right yeah?

Speaker 3 (01:04:18):
I think so.

Speaker 1 (01:04:18):
Let me see what ebay stm 400 xd no, the dx
engineering still selling them.
Oh, not available.
Okay, so brand new.
At dx engineering it was 399,something 399.95 if they were
selling them.
They aren't selling any longer,so what is it?
I think when I bought mine, Ibought it for like 600 $399.95

(01:04:39):
if they were selling them.

Speaker 2 (01:04:39):
They aren't selling them any longer, so what does
eBay got them for?
When I bought mine, I bought itfor like $600.

Speaker 3 (01:04:43):
Yeah, I bought mine.
It was expensive.

Speaker 1 (01:04:46):
Yeah, it's in mint condition.

Speaker 3 (01:04:48):
It's just been sitting here in my shack for.

Speaker 1 (01:04:50):
You probably get close to like almost I'd say
$300 probably.
I sold Casey the 300DR for $325.

Speaker 2 (01:05:03):
That's almost not worth selling If it's only worth
$300.

Speaker 3 (01:05:08):
Yeah, but if you're buying a $700, new one, $300
makes the pain away.

Speaker 2 (01:05:18):
Look at how old the 706 mark 2g is, right and like,
I put what I thought was a fairprice at $350.
But I could have easily askedfor $450 and that radio would
have sold.
You know, like I don't know, itjust seems like the the value

(01:05:40):
is that radio would have sold.
Yep, you know, like I don'tknow, it just seems like the
value is not what it should be.

Speaker 1 (01:05:46):
No, and you know a lot of factors can play into
that, depending on you knowwhat's available for supply out
there and how many people areactually selling their 400s and
what's out there.
The 510D DRASP is $599 at Yaesu, so if you sold it for $350,
you'd only have to pay.

Speaker 3 (01:06:03):
How much is it at Yaesu?

Speaker 1 (01:06:04):
$599.
Not at Yaesu.
At HRO it's $599.95.
Did it just drop?
Yeah, regular price is $729.
They have a manufacturer'scoupon right now, that's up
until July 27th, of $100, andthen HRO is throwing in until
the end of June a $30 discount, then I'm buying it.

Speaker 3 (01:06:26):
Then, if it's only I was looking at it at $7.29, and
then it was $30 off I'm like,ooh $6.99.

Speaker 1 (01:06:35):
$5.99 now that's a $130 discount and then you know
you're paying what 250 out ofyour pocket or less.
Yeah, you know, if you sell the400 it might be a good deal
yeah, all right and you knowthat's what we do here, right?
We help todd spend his money.
We've done our job.
We can, we're done, we can, youknow, say goodbye.

Speaker 3 (01:06:54):
Thank you everybody you did find me the buyer for my
400.
I gotta go up in the attic thatwas.

Speaker 1 (01:07:00):
That was just, that was just luck.
I, I was at ham radio, um,forget his him um.
You know who is it?
It's ham radio, uh.
Ah, this is gonna drive mebonkers.
You know who it is?
Uh, paul, it's ham radio, uh,uh crap oh alan oh uh, punk rock

(01:07:25):
radio yeah, punk rock radio, that's what I was thinking.
Yeah, punk rock ham radio yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:07:29):
Why is he in the?
Why does he want one?

Speaker 1 (01:07:32):
I know he was looking for 300.
I gotta go back it's pretty farback in one of the chats.
But he was originally lookingfor a mobile radio and someone
said, oh, check out the 300.
And then someone's like, oh, ifyou can find something on QRZ
for something cheap, likethere's a few 400s out there and
everyone's like, oh, I mighthave somebody have a 400 that
wants to sell it.

(01:07:52):
That's when you were swappingstuff around.
All right, so cool, all right.
Well, you know, hopefully, keepus in the loop, let us know,
and then let me know when I cancome over and install your radio
so we can stop, you know, having you constantly have daily
withdrawals.

Speaker 3 (01:08:10):
I should bring the HT to see if it works.

Speaker 1 (01:08:13):
Wow, full circle.
Put it on a cake pan on theback of the roof and you're good
to go Be like Ralph, ourpresident.

Speaker 3 (01:08:20):
Oh yeah, you can hear as he's going down from his
house.
It's worse and worse and worse.

Speaker 1 (01:08:26):
Well, dude, his antenna is no bigger than this.
I'm like Ralph put a half waveon top of the top of that car.

Speaker 3 (01:08:32):
Just put a mag mount or something, do something, just
get a radio dude, you can getthem cheap.

Speaker 1 (01:08:38):
He could buy a Quan Cheng mobile for $150 and it's a
dual band.
He'd probably get 50 watts out,no problem, he'll eventually
get around to it, it's all good.

Speaker 2 (01:08:52):
So, eric, how was your ham radio week?

Speaker 1 (01:08:54):
Oh well, yeah, no problem.
It's one of those nights Idon't know like.
As we all alluded to, the bandsare atrocious.
For these past like week and ahalf, I tried to do a poda what
is it?
Friday I went out to Salem Mass.
I had a client out there.
I got done early with that andI thought when I looked at my

(01:09:17):
phone that the weather was goingto hold off from the rain and I
was like, oh okay.
So I quickly pulled up podaappand found a couple of parks that
I hadn't activated and so Iwent over to.
Was it Saugus Ironworks?
Thinking like what the heck isan ironwork park?

(01:09:38):
And it's like a pretty cool.
I guess Saugus is known on themap as the father of creating
steel ironwork kind of stuff forthe ironwork industry Got me
and so they have a.
This park is set up.
Yeah, I know I said the samething.
I'm like what Please?
I know I've heard that they'vehad armories and stuff like that

(01:09:58):
, but that's what this park isknown for.
They're the birthplace ofironworks and they've got a huge
setup.
The park is beautiful.
So I pulled up to the parkbecause it was about five miles
away and I was like, okay, thisis good.
So I pulled in a parking lot, Ikind of did a quick walk around
just so I could see what I hadto play with, and I'm like there
were some awesome trees there.

(01:10:19):
But the park ranger was alsooff in the distance and I wasn't
going to be like throw a wireup at the tree and get yelled at
later kind of thing.
And then, of course, as I'mwalking back to my vehicle to
get all my stuff after doing alittle recon, all of a sudden my
stupid watch goes off and goeshey, in 10 minutes it's going to
rain there and it's going tocome down in buckets.
And I'm like 10 minutes, ah,problem, I could do this, no

(01:10:42):
problem.
So I found the closest parkbench, set everything up, got
the woofer recoil configured, put everything on the bench.
I was like I'm not recordingthis, I'm just getting out there
and activating.
I spun the dial, it was justthat's all I heard.
I did not hear anything.
I'm like did my antenna attachand I'm like, okay, this is
scary, I'm not going to do this.

(01:11:02):
And of course I can see off inthis distance this big giant
black cloud coming towards mydirection, and I was like this
is not going to end well.
So I was like, screw it.
I sat down, I put myself on thespotting page and I can't tell
you how quickly it must havebeen Enviz only or a direct
connection to Tennessee, becauseapparently it was like that
same thing when we were withWalt we were only going North
Carolina and South Carolina.

(01:11:23):
Tennessee was the only peoplethat responded back to my CQs,
and so I had eight in the log.
And I'm like, all of a suddenmy phone goes off again.
Oh, the rain was going to startin four minutes.
And I'm just like, oh, this isnot good.
And of course you know, I'vegot no cover, no umbrella,
anything like that, and I haveto sprint back to the car.

Speaker 2 (01:11:42):
So literally I feel how do you not have a fucking
umbrella?

Speaker 3 (01:11:44):
Because I wasn't thinking like I was going to
operate in the ring, because youwere supposed to be there with
him to provide him that antenna, because you're always prepared,
see.

Speaker 2 (01:11:55):
I always have a minimum of two, but usually
three umbrellas in the truck.

Speaker 1 (01:12:02):
Okay, well, my wife had put two in the car and when
we went away to maine a coupleof times they somehow left the
vehicle and went back inside thehouse, so they never got back
into the vehicle.
So that's why I was like, trustme, I scrambled to look for one
thing and I could at least setsomething up and let the storm
pass.
So literally, at at my 11thcontact, 10 minutes in all, of a

(01:12:22):
sudden, like I didn't even havea second, the skies just opened
up and I'm like, oh no, and I'mscrambling to throw stuff in
the bag.
I'm running back and forth tothe car.
I'm like you know, I pull apart.
I couldn't even pull the wolfapart because my hands are so
slippery.
The aluminum wouldn't tightenloose.
I just collapsed as far as Icould through the back of the

(01:12:43):
truck.
Meanwhile, while I'm runningback like a fire drill, the park
ranger's doing his normalwalkthrough presentation, with a
bunch of people in allumbrellas standing in the middle
of the field while he'sexplaining the ironworks.
I'm like dude, he's not.
Even this doesn't phase him,he's just doing his thing and
I'm looking like an idiotrunning back and forth.
But I was like I got 11contacts.

(01:13:04):
I'm like I'm wet, soaked to thebone, but it was fun.
And, of course, 10 minuteslater the skies are beautiful
and sunny and I was like, allright, I'm gonna have to come
back to this park and reallyactivate it.
But yeah, at least I got on themap.
That was most of my poda, whichwas very, very weird.
I have never spun 20 metersfrom top to bottom and bottom to

(01:13:29):
top and not hear any stationswhatsoever.
I mean, it was and I looked atthe spotting page and there was
30 spots on that page.
I didn't hear one and I'm likewhat is going on?
But people responded.
So I don't know whether it wasjust getting more Envis or just
getting line of sight toTennessee, but I appreciate all
the Tennesseans giving me alltheir contacts to put me on the

(01:13:50):
map because I wouldn't haveactivated that park in that
short amount of time.
Yeah, and so then I'll tell youthat I haven't done POTA at all
up at that point.
And then Saturday, no Sundaythis week, so that's like a week
later.
And so Sunday I ended up, weended up going to Sam's Club and
, long story short, I posted aquick short on my YouTube

(01:14:13):
channel.
I tagged a.
My wife was present with me andI tagged another car with a you
know a hammy.
And my wife saw me do it andshe's just like why don't we
stay?
And I'm like what?
No, I don't stay for thesethings.
I just put them on the car andthen I leave and she's like no,
no, I want to see this play outand I'm like this guy could be
in Costco for an hour and a halfand we could be sitting here

(01:14:35):
waiting for something to happen.

Speaker 2 (01:14:36):
And you're like I don't want to wait and watch him
fucking huck the hammy acrossthe parking lot.

Speaker 1 (01:14:41):
That's exactly what I was thinking to myself.
I explained to her.
I've had scenarios where peoplejust throw the pig halfway
across the parking lot andthey're like what is this crap?
Thinking whatever it is and notpaying attention through the
process.
Long story short, he finallycomes out.
I'm like all right, we're goingto wait 10 minutes, literally
the last minute.
He comes out and, like Iexplained to you guys earlier,
he comes out, he packs his carand then he sees this little

(01:15:03):
pink pig on the door and hestops in.
Getting to the door, you knowhow you get scared a little bit.
Is the door laced with somecyanide or something like that?
He was definitely skeptical.
He picked it up kind of lookedat it, saw the call sign on the
bottom of it and then jumped inhis car and obviously didn't.
So I drove off and I tried toget way ahead of him.

(01:15:24):
So I didn't want to cross paths.
And of course, lo and behold, Iget to the third light on Daniel
Webster in Nashua Guess, whopulls up right next to me.
This guy, literally I'm justhanging out the window enjoying
the sun and he's just in the carseat frantically waving, and I
was like my wife looks over andis like is that the guy you just
hit with the pig?
And I'm like, yeah, so ofcourse he got it and he's just

(01:15:47):
kind of surprised to see it andhis wife is sitting in the car
all embarrassed next to himbecause she's just kind of
covered down so you don't haveto see her face.
But I was like, okay, it was alittle weird experience.
Like I said, I just like tokind of, you know, drop it and
run, but you know it wasdifferent.
My wife got to experience it,which is kind of cool.
So she's like, yeah, you got toload the car up more.

Speaker 2 (01:16:05):
I'm like, yeah, I know, I've got to order a bunch
more, but did he do the KM9G?

Speaker 1 (01:16:13):
No, the hat, no, no, it was more like the wave.
He kind of waved.
And then my wife's like do youguys have an official handshake
like a wave?
I'm like, no, we're not likethe Jeepers, we don't have the
horns, we don't have anythingelse.
Trying to just do the pigs wasenough to get hams to get
involved.
Nevertheless, a wave, a secrethandshake, I know Right, of

(01:16:35):
course.
My daughter like do you guyshave a secret handshake?
And she's like here, give meyour hand.
And she does like this weirdthing.
I'm like, what are you doing?
She's like this is what thejeepers do.
And I'm like, oh god the jeepershave a jeepers, have a
handshake apparently they dotodd I thought it was just the
wave like I did too right.

Speaker 3 (01:16:50):
Apparently there's more oh well, I guess I'm out of
it, yep me too so yeah, it's,it's funny.
Like when I got my jeep forlike the first time, you know,
years ago, my first jeep, like Ididn't even know there was a
way, I'm like why is everyonewaving to me drives a jeep?
Like I had no idea, like whatit was.
Because when you ridemotorcycles you do that like you
, you know you wait to other, you know if you're passing other

(01:17:13):
motorcycles on the side of theroad.

Speaker 1 (01:17:14):
Some people, yeah, yeah most people, most people do
.
I was like I'm not cool enoughum, but yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:17:23):
So I just thought it was kind of funny.
But now you're telling methere's a handshake.
Well, crap, I know I wassurprised by that.
I'll tell you this right now,though I the one thing I can't
stand is all those freakingducks, ducks, dude.
It is the dumbest thing I'veever seen, and like they're all
in the dash, it's just.

Speaker 1 (01:17:44):
One day I'm hoping we're going to see on the news
some jeeper gets into anaccident by accident and they
get into a head-on collision andthey've got duck imprints all
over their face from the sheerforce of all the ducks coming
off the dash and hitting themdirectly.

Speaker 3 (01:17:58):
Yeah, I mean it's, it's, it's so dumb and like a
guy that I that I knew that he,uh he moved down to Florida but
he drove back up here and he wasat the, at the flying field,
and he, uh, he's like, oh, youdon't have any ducks on your
Jeep.
I'm like, yeah, that's totallydumb.
I said I'm sorry I go, but I'mlike, yeah, that's totally dumb.
I said I'm sorry I go, but I'mnot putting ducks in my thing.

(01:18:21):
He goes, whoa, you've nevergotten a duck.
I said, yeah, and I give themto my kid and he ends up
freaking, giving them to hisgirlfriend or something.

Speaker 1 (01:18:29):
Plays with it in the tub.

Speaker 2 (01:18:30):
Yeah, I mean it's.
Todd, I saw the perfect memefor you this morning.
Right, yeah, was it was a bodyof water filled with rubber
ducks right, and the caption atthe bottom says jeep drives into
the, into the pond ducks rideyeah I don't even know like, how

(01:18:55):
did it even start?

Speaker 3 (01:18:56):
like it's, I don't get it.
I don't know.
What does a duck have to dowith a Jeep?
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:19:02):
Well, but I think it's a play on words, right?
I'm not into the Jeep cultureor anything, but I have heard
several Jeep people saying, oh,duck me, and so maybe it's a,
you know.
Oh, fuck me, Fuck me, fuck mefuck me, fuck me ducks.

Speaker 1 (01:19:22):
It's called ducking, but yeah, but yeah.
But jeep owners are putting theducks on other jeeps they want
to fuck that jeep owner oh,maybe that's why I've only
gotten one duck damn it itdoesn't say that in the title,
unless I read in between thelines there, paul.

(01:19:43):
Oh, maybe that's why I've onlygotten one duck, damn it.
It doesn't say that in thetitle, unless I read in between
the lines there, paul.
So you know, ai is telling methat it's just a simple act of
kindness.

Speaker 3 (01:19:50):
So if you're really being you know, forthright and
telling me how you really feel.
You know, yeah, like I can see, like all the you know meaning
that.
And then, like all the FordBronco guys are shoving ducks
and all the Jeep guys areputting ducks on the Ford Bronco
guys, oh, the Ford Bronco guyshate it like it is.

Speaker 1 (01:20:04):
Like I mentioned that to Tim one time and like he
went off of you know a 20 minutetirade about how dare you put a
duck on my car.
So I told I think Mike put ahammy on his Jeep at him,
mentioned.
So uh, I don't know whathappened to that one.

Speaker 2 (01:20:22):
Yeah, I don't get that funny if somebody stuck a
duck in a tailpipe that onewould be horrible dude.

Speaker 1 (01:20:31):
That plastic would melt so fast and I can only
imagine what that would do longtermterm.

Speaker 3 (01:20:36):
But you'd be surprised You'll see like these
people driving and they'll havelike the whole dash, sometimes
like double rows, of these Jeeps, of these ducks, and I'm like
it looks ridiculous and it'sjust dumb and the fact that this
guy who's like probably pushingseven, 65, 70 years old, is all
proud about it.
He's got them all differentcolors rainbow, yellow, pink,

(01:20:58):
green.
I'm like like you do know thatlooks ridiculous.
Right, he goes.
No, no, no, it's huge down inflorida.
I'm like, I'm sure it is.
I'm like doesn't mean, I'mputting them on my.
I said so don't put one on myjeep or I'm gonna freaking wing
it at you.

Speaker 2 (01:21:11):
Well, I mean I guess it's.
It's no worse than the thecorvette owners that all wear,
you know, the, the light coloredpolo and the jean jorts and the
and the white new balances withthe calf high socks, yeah oh
yeah, because they're the onlyold guys that can afford that
kind of car maybe.

Speaker 1 (01:21:31):
Well, their ex-wife died, so they definitely could
afford it.
I'm sure, yeah, one of the oneof the kids.

Speaker 3 (01:21:38):
One of the kids in, uh, our town for a senior
project he uh he redid a 19, Ithink it was a 77 corvette
stingray.
That was his senior project.
Like the kids pretty sold thatone off.
Dude, it's freaking sweet, itcame out awesome.
But like dude, he gets afreaking junker and he spends.
I I mean, he gets the creditand I always get this kick-ass

(01:22:00):
classic car.
Wow, it's pretty awesome.
That is pretty sweet.

Speaker 1 (01:22:07):
Yeah, I don't think like we would even be able to do
that.
I mean, they don't like you'dhave to go to a tech school to
even make that happen around.
You know where I was growing up?
Because they didn't have likehigh school, barely had wood
shop.

Speaker 3 (01:22:20):
Well, I think he had.
I think he had to buy.
Like you know, this was likecar his time it wasn't like the
school donated him.
That would be awesome if youfix this up, you can keep it and
uh, senior project yeah, donateto the principal.

Speaker 1 (01:22:31):
Yeah, wow, yeah, kind of funny, like you mentioned.
Like stereotypes paul wasmentioned, the corvette owners,
owners We've all seen theofficial ham radio stereotypes.
That one pisses me off the most.

Speaker 2 (01:22:47):
How many hams have you seen in the videos of ham
vengeance and shit?
They all look like that.
They're overweight.
Their clothes are too small.
They're overweight.
Their clothes are too small.
They're wearing cargo shortsand fucking.
New Balance White New.

Speaker 1 (01:23:05):
Balance, because that's the way to go, and socks
up over their calves, yeah.
Or worse, if they are part ofthe Aries conglomerate, they
will be wearing theirfluorescent colored vest and
their fluorescent colored hat.
Or the one thing I really findhilarious, every time I watch, I
go to any ham bench or just anyham fest.
How many hams that go crazywith their badge name tags.

(01:23:31):
They'll have their one name tagof their call sign this and
then they'll have another nametag and they'll have the land
yard around their neck.
They literally carry aroundeight name tags with all of
their same call signs on it.
It's like, dude, I get yourcall sign, I've got it memorized
, I'm all set.

Speaker 2 (01:23:44):
You don't need to tell me further but then they
have also got it on their hat, their, hats too, right Like just
in case you.

Speaker 3 (01:23:55):
Yeah, like it's like you almost have to get like the
geek out of ham radio to to likeyou know, like you and you go
to the.
You know, when we go to nearfest and I see those cars with
like five antennas coming, itlooks like a porcupine car, you
know it's got antennas going inevery direction, like do one or

(01:24:21):
two antennas on that, like itkind of blends in with the car,
you know like you know oneantenna is fine.
You know, if you've got alittle hatchback and you have
your dual band antenna, like youknow, off the hood or in the
front of the on the, you know, whatever, that's fine.
But when you start putting, like you know, huge ass antennas
going in every differentdirection and you're driving
down on on a Honda Civic, youlook like a complete Still TTI.
Yeah, you look like a completefool.

Speaker 1 (01:24:42):
Dude, I don't know where you're.
I've never seen the Honda Civicstyles.
I've always seen the big DodgeDeSoto four-door cars that are
white, or the big Volvos thathave the four doors, that they
have 19 VHF, uhf antennas on theroof, that have all been
drilled through the roof, andthen they've got a big ATAS on

(01:25:04):
the left side and they've got atar heel on the right side.
I mean, like dude, where areyou putting all the freaking
radios in this car and where areyou paying attention to the
road?
Like I mean, it's funny because, like I was on, I was on, I was
on 101A like two weeks ago, andI was just driving up and this
Volvo, white Volvo, with theonly.

Speaker 3 (01:25:23):
Thing.

Speaker 1 (01:25:23):
Yeah, it's like he's got literally in every corner of
the top of the roof there's aVHF or UHF style antenna and
like I saw into his interior andhe doesn't have more than maybe
two radios, I'm like, are youputting in a coax switch, do you
like?
You know?
You like finding which phase isbetter, depending on which one
you read.
And then his ATAS.

(01:25:43):
I felt bad about that thing.
He had original ATAS off thedriver's side hood up front and
it was literally almosthorizontal.
It was so bad.
I'm like, dude, if he hits acar oncoming the other way, it's
just going to crack the glassbecause the whip's gonna hit it
so hard, you know, because it'snot vertical any longer.
And I was like I was trying toavoid him because I know he was
just like he saw my you knowantennas and my truck and my

(01:26:05):
call sign.
So we're kind of doing thatchase each other to the light
kind of thing.
And I was like, okay, dude.

Speaker 3 (01:26:11):
But if you, if you look at it, like you ever see
those uh google earth cars goingaround filming and they've got
like cameras and like satellites, like the car looks like it's
been modified, like it's doingsomething right, that's what
these cars look like, butthey're actually.
They're really just likelightning attractors.
Like that guy in that volvo isgonna drive if a storm comes,

(01:26:34):
you know he's getting hit.
If it's a car getting hit, thatthing is like it's just nuts
and I'm like why Are you doingham radio that much in your car
while you're driving down 101?
What are you doing?

Speaker 1 (01:26:50):
Let me pose this question to both of you guys
what is the max number pieces offlare, ergo antennas, that you
need that's passable on avehicle in your mind, like two,
and are both of those the samestyle or those HF cover?

Speaker 3 (01:27:09):
two different antennas doing either doing two
different things.
So you're either like an HFantenna and a dual band or a UHF
, a VHF.
You know if that's the way youwanted to go.
But you don either like an hfantenna and a dual band or a uhf
, a vhf.
You know if that's the way youwanted to go, but you don't need
an antenna.
I would say two.
I mean I prefer one, but youknow I don't know, I think.

Speaker 2 (01:27:30):
So I mean I say two because I have two on my truck
I've got the uhF EHF and I'vegot the CB.

Speaker 1 (01:27:38):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (01:27:38):
Yeah, Now if, if, if I had an HF radio installed in
the truck, I don't think I wouldleave the HF antenna on the
truck all the time.
I think I would I, would youknow, put it on when I want it,
and then take it off, cause Idon't want to drive around with
a fucking HF antenna, unless I'mdoing like a Cuck V style,

(01:28:01):
where you know it's on the frontbumper.

Speaker 1 (01:28:03):
I hate that.

Speaker 3 (01:28:06):
My A-TAS.
Eric, I was thinking, now thatI have a hitch on my car, could
I set something up where I coulduse that and just mount it to
the hitch when I want to use itand then just take it out when
I'm done?

Speaker 2 (01:28:21):
yeah, just put a, put a coax, uh plug above the above
the receiver right, and thatway you could.
You could just use a shortlittle jumper from the antenna
to that connecting point rightand that makes your connection.

Speaker 3 (01:28:36):
I think what I'm going to do is just use.
Use that as, like my winter, you know like, you know how you
like if you're in a jam or it'spouring or snowing out, you can
use the.
They just go out there, plug it, you know, pop it on there and
then do it right from the caryeah, just remember your atas.

Speaker 1 (01:28:51):
The so239 screws right into the bottom of the
antenna.
So you're going to need, like atruck trucker, mount CB that
you're going to have to attachto a PVC to slide in that post.
But that's not a big deal.

Speaker 3 (01:29:01):
Yeah, I'm going to have to play around with it, but
I thought that was kind of.

Speaker 1 (01:29:05):
So I must break all your rules because, although I
don't drive around with all ofmy external antennas, I have
that SO239 off the back of mybumper that I can hook any
intended to that I want you knowin regards, that's just smart,
okay, all right.

Speaker 3 (01:29:19):
So then I feel a little bit better then.
Well, that, well, that's, Imean, that's, that's, yeah, I
mean.
Having the, having the mount onit and to be able to swap them
around is fine, like like, ifyou're going to go, say you're
going to go to a park and youwant to put on you know whatever
your ATAS on there, fine, right, good, put it on there.

(01:29:42):
You're not driving around allday long with five antennas.
You put that antenna becausethat's the one you're using for
the day.
You don't need it on there allthe time, just to drive, to work
, to have a big ass antenna onthe back of your car or your
truck.
Now, trucks, I'll give you this, trucks are a little bit
different because you know youcan have a rack back there and
you know they don't look.

(01:30:02):
Having multiple antennas on atruck doesn't look as bad as
having multiple antennas on ahatchback or a Volvo.
Sure, right, right, like itlooks different, right, like,
even like on a Jeep.
Like an antenna on a Jeep looksnormal, like it belongs there.
Five antennas on a Volvo doesnlooks normal like it belongs
there.

Speaker 2 (01:30:22):
Five antennas on a volvo, it doesn't look like it
belongs there like it just looksand for the record, there is
nothing wrong with the mailboxletters on the tailgate with
your call sign yes, there, oh mygosh, yes, there is a 502 in
what?

Speaker 1 (01:30:37):
dude?
In 1982, yes, that was the onlything available at the hardware
store to go buy the stupidlittle letters that you put on
your mailbox with your numbersand your street address.
Those are what you see on allthe hams today.
Like, dude, spend 10 minutes,go online and create yourself a
sticker and print it out like, make it, make it look good, come

(01:30:58):
on.

Speaker 3 (01:30:59):
Do you have that on your truck?

Speaker 1 (01:31:01):
Yeah, the letters?
Yes, I do, he does, so yeah, you know I fault him a little
bit for it, but I accept itbecause I understand.

Speaker 2 (01:31:11):
All right.
So let me explain why I did itand when I did it.
Okay, we were getting ready forwe were driving down to Florida
last year, um, and I didn'thave anything that said, like
you know, hey, this, this stupidantenna on this side is CB and

(01:31:33):
the antenna on the other side, you know is is, you know, two
meters 77.
You know two meter 77, and so Iused what I had available to me
, which was lettering from myboat, and so I just had the
sticker pack, you know, with themailbox letters, and that's
different.

Speaker 1 (01:31:48):
I'll give you that so I put n1og and I put 146.52 at
least all your letters are whiteand they aren't black, but
they're not outlined.
Yeah, okay, but they're notoutlined.
Yeah, okay, but they're notoutlined in a gold little box
around each individual.

Speaker 3 (01:32:04):
Well, again, I just.
I just got a uh on Amazon justa back license plate cover that
says it says whiskey.
It's written out whiskey one, sierra, tango Juliet which, for
the longest time, I couldn'tread.
Like it was too hard to read.
I don't want to be flashy.

(01:32:25):
I figured like if someone'ssitting in traffic they might
see it and say, oh, but it's.
It's like it's not, like it'sblaring out at you like like
I've got like one of those, those, uh, you ever see those
lights that you can putdifferent words on the back,
that have that like whiskeyScrolling, marquee Scrolling,
yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:32:39):
I know you guys gave me shit when I said, hey,
wouldn't it be cool if we boughtone of those little LED panels
you can find on Amazon that youcan type in?
Texas as I'm on 5-2?
.
I got lambasted by both youguys.

Speaker 3 (01:32:50):
I do like the hand that you can switch the middle
finger.
That's beneficial If someone'son your ass or whatever, which
the middle finger.

Speaker 1 (01:32:57):
That's beneficial.

Speaker 3 (01:32:58):
Like, if you, if someone's like on your ass or
whatever, you can just turn itto the finger.
It lights up, yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:33:03):
Well, I'd rather have the words.
That way, I could just, likeyou know, text it and get the
fuck off my ass or pull my hair.
You know, you choose one.

Speaker 2 (01:33:11):
Well, so, uh, years, years ago, when I was in the
motorcycle club, um, somebody, somebody had this stupid fucking
.
It was a toy, right, um, but itwas a fist and and when you
walked past it it would flip youoff and it would go, and it

(01:33:32):
would it would say you know, like I think it had like nine
different recordings in it andit would say something uh, so
what I did was I took and I putVelcro on the bottom of it, I
put Velcro on my dash and I juststick it on the dash and I just
put the middle finger up.
That way, when somebody is infront of me and they're in the

(01:33:53):
fast lane and they're going slow, yeah, I just put that middle
finger up lane and they're goingslow.

Speaker 1 (01:33:59):
Yeah, just put that middle finger up as if move over
in in mirrored, freaking printon my windshield isn't enough.
I know, right, exactly right, yeah, exactly, so you can see it
in your own rear view, right?
Yes, you know, we gotta goagain.
We gotta go back to thosestupid ridiculous long whips,
like I.
Like I was scanning YouTube, asalways, because every once in a
while I like to see otherpeople's truck builds with

(01:34:21):
radios.
There's another thing I want toget into in a second with
people and their mounts, becauseeven though I appreciate
Jason's nice handy work in histruck, I hate that mount.
It annoys me to no end.
But I'll get into that in asecond.
Those long, giant ass whipsLike I don't get it.

(01:34:43):
They're almost what a full wave.
Is that the three-quarter wave?
I don't know what type ofwavelength are they?

Speaker 3 (01:34:49):
What does it give you ?
That's what I want to know,Like how much.
I mean I look at it like welost Paul again.
Yeah, you should get thatpicture too, His thinking mode.
I can't do that.

Speaker 1 (01:35:01):
It's never going to end.
Sorry, this is my picture yougot Elon.

Speaker 3 (01:35:06):
Go on Screenshot that one.
That's a good one.
Yeah, you got Elon again.

Speaker 1 (01:35:10):
The thinking grouch.
He's gone now, all right, he'soffline.
What?

Speaker 3 (01:35:19):
happened to him.
He disconnected no morethinking Grouch.

Speaker 1 (01:35:23):
Yeah, we'll get the real answer on why these long
whips.
Oh, there we go, all right.

Speaker 2 (01:35:29):
So anyways, what I was trying to say before fucking
Elon silenced me.

Speaker 1 (01:35:35):
He likes long whips.

Speaker 2 (01:35:38):
So I think, I think like it's a 20 meter quarter
wave essentially, you know, it'slike 102 too much you gotta,
you gotta think like militarystyle, right?

Speaker 1 (01:35:58):
um, you know, the military's been using those
antennas for fucking forever inthe middle of the desert where
they need them, or in some backremote area well, the thing is,
though, is you can use themwhile you're driving, because
you've got it down and it and itjust acts as an envis yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:36:15):
and then when, when you've got it down, and it just
acts as an envis, yeah.
And then, when you've gottensomewhere and you're stationary,
you put it all the way up, andthen that's your station.

Speaker 1 (01:36:25):
It just looks obnoxious.
That's all I look at, oh itdoes.

Speaker 3 (01:36:27):
It looks stupid as all hell, but like on a
passenger car of someonecommuting to work.
It just looks ridiculous ofsomeone commuting to work.
It just looks ridiculous.
And it's not.
That guy is not getting anymore people on his radio than I
am.

Speaker 1 (01:36:45):
I saw a build on the internet of a guy doing a
YouTuber and I was looking forrams, like people who
specifically had a ram and didan install of a radio in their
truck.
And this guy had one and it wasmounted on his big giant bumper
in the front that spanned overthe front of the windshield and
he tied it back to his littlebasket at the top.
And then he had another onethat was up at the top of the

(01:37:06):
basket that roped around to theback bumper, so he had these two
like giant waves of whips goingover the top of his vehicle and
I was just like this isridiculous.
And then he's cut to the sceneinside his truck and he mounted
a radio right behind his headthat's just only for the

(01:37:27):
purposes of putting into whatthe heck, crossband repeat.
That's the only thing that thisradio did and it just sits
behind his head.
And I'm'm like you bought aradio that's a dual bander to
put in cross band repeat just tosit behind your head.
And then his center console hemounted like this crazy, similar

(01:37:49):
kind of how jason does, hissetup with the big pipes and
everything, and he covered overall of his radio, his controls
for AC and venting and all thatstuff.
So nothing in front of theregular dash was even available
to get around or touch becausehe had three other radios and a
tablet.
And I'm just like dude.
The ergonomics alone on this isridiculous.

(01:38:10):
It's like I'm not going to bepaying attention to that while
I'm driving but at the same timeI want to be able to hear the
radio or deal with the controlsfor climate.
I kind of commented and said, hey, you might want to rework
the ergonomics and the layout alittle bit, because it doesn't
make sense in my mind.
But nice design, what?

Speaker 2 (01:38:32):
do you got?

Speaker 1 (01:38:33):
Let's throw.
What do you?
Got this one?
Okay, so this is the whip, okay.

Speaker 2 (01:38:37):
But the thing is look , so this is the whip Okay.
But the thing is, look, it'sgoing the wrong way, yeah like
why would you have it in there?

Speaker 3 (01:38:43):
Why am I not seeing that?
Did you share?

Speaker 2 (01:38:45):
your screen yeah, it's in the live recording you
don't see the video.

Speaker 3 (01:38:50):
Do I have to hit editor?

Speaker 2 (01:38:51):
Oh.

Speaker 1 (01:38:54):
No are you looking at the live?
Let's just do this.
I'm going to go out of studiomood.
You see it now.
No, how big do I have to makethis?

Speaker 3 (01:39:04):
Oh, now I see it.
All.
Right, I see it now.
Okay, it's in big and now.
So why didn't I see it before?

Speaker 1 (01:39:10):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:39:12):
You're probably looking at the other.

Speaker 1 (01:39:16):
The you're probably looking at the other, the
transition, the studio side, okay, so yeah, the lift's wrong.

Speaker 3 (01:39:20):
It should be the other way, although see now, but
that on that truck looks normal.
Yeah, I mean, it looks likeit's military, but it looks like
it belongs there.
You put that thing on a Volvo.
It looks stupid.
It looks like it belongs there.
Yeah, you put that thing on aVolvo.
It looks stupid.

Speaker 1 (01:39:42):
It does.
Let's see if I can find thatpicture.
Let me grab this one here.
I know I saw it somewhere, emma.
Anyway, yeah, like Hummersmakes sense.
I know I saw it somewhere, emma.
Anyway, yeah, like hummers makesense.
Maybe large pickup trucks likeyou know three-quarter, you know

(01:40:06):
three-quarter one-ton kind oftrucks.
But when you start putting themlike on half tons and you just
make it look like a porcupine oreven like, make it look like
porcupine with a bunch ofantennas and then add those as
another layer, just yeah, itjust totally makes it look like
a porcupine.
Or even like, look, make itlook like porcupine with a bunch
of antennas and then add thoseas another layer, just yeah, it
just totally makes it lookstupid.
You get a lot of looks, though,I'll give you that.
Yeah, like, what a loser.
Who's that Exactly?

(01:40:27):
That is literally how it looks,it's.
It's funny, cause, like when Idid my videos for my truck, a
lot of the comments I got weregood comments, but then I always
got the few from the typicalhams.
You could tell who they werebecause they were like man, that
install is too expensive for me.
I prefer to just put a bunch ofhamsticks on the back of my car

(01:40:50):
and mag mounts and tri mountsand basically look like a
porcupine and it does the samething for a lot less and I'm
like Right, and all those peoplethat are putting, if you've
noticed, like cars are getting, they're not like as metal as
they used to be.
They're more like.
Well, that's why they use theVolvos and the old 1980s
vehicles.

Speaker 3 (01:41:10):
But they're more like a, you know, like a.

Speaker 2 (01:41:13):
Soda can.

Speaker 3 (01:41:14):
Yeah, yeah, and those mag mounts don't stick on them
and it's not going to work theway it's, you know.
So, yeah, it's kind of funny.

Speaker 1 (01:41:24):
things are changing yeah, dude, I you know.
So what's the so?
So along the lines of theantennas then.
So what's the max limit ofradio should you have in your
vehicle?

Speaker 3 (01:41:37):
Like permanently mounted.

Speaker 1 (01:41:39):
Yeah, three.
Okay, and are all those ham, orthose just ham and a CB?

Speaker 2 (01:41:47):
UHF, vhf, hf and a CB .

Speaker 3 (01:41:50):
Yeah, that's what.
That would be the max.
Yep, absolutely.
You don't need more than oneradio doing the same thing.
You don't need two VHF UHFradios in.
There's no need for it, juststupid.

Speaker 1 (01:42:04):
Every day.
Yes, I agree.

Speaker 2 (01:42:05):
It's stupid, even anytime I heard that Jim from
Coffee and Ham Radios.
He has one radio that is UHFEHF, then he only does APRS on
it, and then he's got one that'sUHF EHF that he talks on.

Speaker 1 (01:42:27):
Yep, yeah, there are those people I mean.

Speaker 2 (01:42:31):
I don't get it, but I mean, whatever man he's got two
antennas Correct Running atleast those two radios.

Speaker 3 (01:42:35):
I mean, whatever man, he's got two antennas correct
Running At least those tworadios, one for just APRS.

Speaker 1 (01:42:43):
Well, yeah, I mean, he could do like a diplexer and
get away with it, which, youknow, that's one antenna and two
radios.

Speaker 3 (01:42:50):
So he's willing to put that much effort into
putting a radio in a car just torun APRS that really no one
really gives a shit about.
No one's following them orusing it Right.

Speaker 1 (01:43:03):
Yeah, okay.
So I mean we all know whereAPRS kind of stands.

Speaker 3 (01:43:07):
I tried APRS and I got it because I would keep
screwing up the radio.
I had to broadcast because theknob would switch and I'd be
broadcasting on Westford orPaxton.
The guy would be like you'rebroadcasting APRS.

Speaker 1 (01:43:22):
You get a nice nasty email saying hey, we know,
you've been broadcasting.

Speaker 3 (01:43:24):
I don't give a crap about this anymore.
I just shut it off.
I'm like I'm done.
I'm not using it.
I don't need it.

Speaker 1 (01:43:29):
But that's the same premise of why Jim runs a
separate radio.
He can just set the APRS and itnever goes.
He never touches it, he justput power to it.

Speaker 3 (01:43:37):
Right, but again, for what?
I never used it for anything, except what did?
I've never used it in my I mean, it was broadcasting.
For what?
I never got a message, I nevergot anything.

Speaker 1 (01:43:49):
Well, okay, I know Paul's got some good experience,
at least with APRS, becausehe's pointed out the wind link
stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:43:54):
Yeah, I mean.
So it is cool that you get thenotification for wood link, um,
you know, but really like, Imean other than traveling, like
I don't I don't use APRS, um,and I only use it for traveling
because it my message is hey,I'm in the truck and I'm on one,
four, six, not five.

(01:44:15):
I'm in the truck and I'm on one, four, six, not five, two Sure,
like that's what my message is.

Speaker 3 (01:44:19):
I get out.
Yeah, I could see, I could seedoing that, having it, having
that message saying if you'remonitoring that and you're
traveling, that would make sense.

Speaker 1 (01:44:29):
Let me throw this out at you, and this is kind of
where why I run it.
So yeah.
So yeah, the APRS in most ofthese radios that are for these
manufacturers out there arehalf-baked and garbage like
they're just hot garbage.
In terms of being able to useit to actually respond to a
message from somebody else stilluse, like the SMS gateways,

(01:44:49):
thank you, and those types ofthings.
It's not great.
I mean, I subscribe to the samething, like KM4AK.
He does, jason does Smart.
Jason does an awesome jobtearing into APRS.
He's done an awesome job withthe 1F doing that and just
saying it's not great, it's notfully there, and he's done it
with a lot of the 500s andeverything else like that, and I

(01:45:11):
love it.
At the same time, though, aprsis a great tool to beacon out,
because if you ever payattention to the propagation
tropo maps that are out therethat do real-time distance
propagation for VHF and UHF inthe area that you can get where

(01:45:33):
the hotspots are, aprscontributes to a lot of that.
So, as I'm beaconing when I'mdriving out there and I'm
passing that information off toAPRs network, that feeds that
network as well to give otherhams that might be wanting to
try a score six meter longdistance contact the opportunity
or a two meter distance contact, because that's feeding that

(01:45:55):
system to be able to give usmore real-time data.
And that's feeding that systemto be able to give us more
real-time data and that's why Ido it.
I don't think I've ever sent anAPRS message.
Well, no, when I first got it Isent a bunch of them and none
of them came back to me.
Nobody responded.
I think I texted myself oncewhen the SMS gate did work
before you went the other way.
But I've never used it.
And maybe they use it in Ares alot.

(01:46:17):
I know they do it, obviouslyfor road races and that tracking
stuff, because Tim has saidthat they've used that for the
lead vehicles and the followchase vehicles and stuff like
that, which makes total sense.
That's great for that, becausethat's what I see as a closed
course.
But everyday use, yeah, Isubscribe to K-Murder's approach
.
It's useless, it really doesn'tgive me anything.

(01:46:39):
Yeah, it won't even give methat.
I mean literally I might haveto pop a lot of Viagra to make
that happen, to make it worth mywhile.
So, yeah, it would be IfKenwood and I'm going to finish
my rant here.
If Kenwood smacked Yaesu acrossthe face and every other
manufacturer that was creatingan APRS information said, hey,

(01:46:59):
follow this Kenwood's way.
They did, it was perfect.
But I'm not going to buy aKenwood just to play with the
APRS.
I'm sorry, I'm not going tospend $700 on any of those
radios just so I can have a goodimplementation of APRS, because
it's just not worth my time.
So end rant.

Speaker 2 (01:47:19):
Yeah, thank you for sharing my hatred of APRS.

Speaker 1 (01:47:24):
You're welcome.
Same thing with my hatred of CB.
I just can't.
I love Walt.
I just can't get back to CB.
I just don't want it.
If Walt gave me a radio I'd sayhere you go, walt.
It reminds me of like you wantto hear my ham radio.
You want to hear my CB.

Speaker 3 (01:47:41):
No, no, I don't CB.
There's like, what do you?
How do you call out to someoneLike do you do it?
Like just throw out?
There's no call signs oranything?
What do you do to get someoneon the radio?

Speaker 2 (01:47:54):
So I, I've never gotten into cv like walt, uh,
you know where, like I, I don'tunderstand the, the letter
number configurations that theyassign each other like they,
they, they give themselves thesecombinations.
Um, I just, I use it fordriving, right, like when I'm,

(01:48:17):
when I'm driving, uh, I, I wantto, I want to hear what the
truckers are saying, and theydon't use it as frequently as
they used to, right, but anytimethat there's like some type of
traffic jam or you knowsomething, are they.

Speaker 3 (01:48:33):
Are they on um?
Are they on channel nine still19.

Speaker 2 (01:48:38):
19.
That's what I meant 19, yeah,yeah, 19 and 17 are the primary
ones.

Speaker 1 (01:48:43):
Hey, Paul, they have this great technology.
It's called Waze.
Waze does all of that for me,yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:48:49):
Waze is yeah, but Waze isn't going to tell you hey
, the accident up ahead isblocking the left lane, so like
everybody needs to be in theright lane.

Speaker 1 (01:49:04):
Mine does.

Speaker 2 (01:49:06):
Oh, all right, They've improved it.
I don't fucking.

Speaker 3 (01:49:11):
Waze gets better.
Every day it's getting moreaccurate.

Speaker 1 (01:49:13):
That's my justification.
If we're using the Trucker CB,like you said, it's like, hey,
can I get road accurate updatedinformation, like I just can't
put a radio in my truck just forthat Like that would be like me
putting up a fourth antenna onmy truck for no reason at all.
They sell HT Handheld.
But, dude, how often do youremember to bring your HT in the

(01:49:34):
car and then nevertheless haveto figure out how to charge it,
to keep it charged?
so you can remember to use itagain.
You know, yeah, no, not goingto happen.
I just yeah, my CB days aregone.
I mean, when I was a kid wetook it when we went down to
Georgia played with all thetruckers.

Speaker 3 (01:49:51):
My parents learned that truckers were, you know,
assholes and used the F word allthe time, and that's how I
learned for it, but I was, I wasreally disappointed when I was
stuck in that, uh, in thatpropane tank flipped over five
two for that, I know, but no onewas there.
Well, that's another.
And then the only way I wasable to talk to people was
talking to the epson repeater.
That's where I got ryan and hewas like oh thanks, dude, I'm
heading up that way, I'll takethe back roads.

(01:50:13):
And he's like just want to letyou know I'm already past you
and I'm still sitting there.
So I mean, so that worked.
But I I see a lot of uhtruckers, you know especially
you know around.
You know, when I've gone downto north carolina, that they
have uh ham radio antennas too.
I do like they're running both.
So I think if you when weretraveling, when you were

(01:50:35):
traveling on five two did youhear a lot of people on it.

Speaker 1 (01:50:40):
And.

Speaker 2 (01:50:40):
I.
I called out regularly.
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:50:44):
On my way down to North Carolina.
I made a conscious effort.
I put a little, stick a note onmy dash.
Every time I get into a newstate, call on five, two and you
know, after a while I think Imade like three contacts total.
But that was like right, like Igot Pennsylvania, I got
somebody, I got somebody in.
It was a Delaware or WashingtonDC.

(01:51:05):
I came around one of those twoStates and, yeah, it wasn't too
bad.
I had one or two decentconversations but outside of
that, like Paul said, it wasdead, it was quiet.

Speaker 2 (01:51:14):
Well.
So I will say though all right,so up and down the east coast,
um, I've had a lot more successwhere you know like hey, I'm in
connecticut, n10g, uh, 93southbound in connecticut, just
listening, and somebody willcome back right.
Hey, n10g is 93 southbound indelaware, and somebody will come

(01:51:39):
back right.
And so, like going down toflorida and back, I made a lot
of 5-2 contacts but for whateverreason I don't know, like going
through upstate new york andohio, pennsylvania, indiana,
just nothing nothing I getnothing in vermont.

Speaker 1 (01:51:57):
You think it like when I get to like peaks, when I
went to back roads into NewYork going up to Troy in that
area for client runs, I used togo up to the like top of Loon
and I'd be like slow drivingthrough there calling on 5-2.
You think I hear anybody nope, nobody from Vermont, nothing at
all.
It was dead.
And then you know New York wassame way like.
I mean you go down 93 and youryour signals just actually no,

(01:52:19):
yeah, that was hf.
So no, that was definitely notfive, two, but yeah, I assure
you sentiment yeah, and I meanso.

Speaker 2 (01:52:26):
I mean you're, you're familiar with, like where
hogback mountain is new yorkright, and like I figured for
sure, like when I crested hogback, I started calling out Nope
, nothing.

Speaker 1 (01:52:40):
Yeah, yeah, it was disappointing, very
disappointing.
Yeah, man, yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:52:47):
I could see.
I could see having like a shackand having a dedicated radio,
you know, with four, five, two, just leaving it on monitoring
well, you do that now right tome yeah, I thought you're.

Speaker 1 (01:53:03):
You had one of your.
You have aprs running on your400, or no?

Speaker 3 (01:53:07):
well, I do.
I don't use it.
I normally just run epsom andbedford.

Speaker 1 (01:53:11):
There we go, folks so why don't you put five two on
the b band then?

Speaker 3 (01:53:16):
because I'm band then I never hear anyone and I'm
always listening to Epsom, orwhat is the other one I do hold
on.

Speaker 2 (01:53:27):
Greylock so I will say at home, when I had the
whole station set up in my house, so I had the 7300 for HF and
then I had the 706 mark 2g andand that was vhf, uhf only I
didn't have an hf antennaconnected to it.
Um, but what I would do is Iwould.

(01:53:49):
I would you know like.
N1IMO repeaters.
You know IRS repeater 14652,you know 446, 600, like, and

(01:54:10):
there were more than a few timeswhere, like it would stop on
14652 and you know somebodyasking for you know a radio
check or something, or you knowit was dale, and I'd be like,
hey, all right, yep, all right, yeah, I'm here, I hear you.

Speaker 1 (01:54:25):
You know, let's have a conversation real quick yeah,
yeah, dude, that's if I could goback in time and find the
knucklehead who decided tospread the idea that 5.2 should
only be this listening emergencychannel.
Now, granted, I understood it.
I grew up in part and I saidthis in other podcasts or in
other episodes where that wouldbe the sign on the highway you'd

(01:54:48):
see for emergencies, call up146.5.2.
And they had the policedispatch trained on how to
listen for motorist reportingand stuff.
But at that point we didn'thave cell phones, so that made
sense.
Now everybody's got a freakingcell phone.
Let's change that and make itsomething different instead of
this dead band.

Speaker 3 (01:55:10):
Yeah, make it like the chat band.
Yeah, dude, yeah, that would beawesome, like the universal.
That's where you go and haveconversation and then you could
always just you know and thenpeople you know.

Speaker 1 (01:55:21):
Normally if you want a private conversation you could
just bump down you know or doexactly like let's start putting
in the adventure protocol that,uh, you know, um, george kj6vg
created.
Use pls, you know.
Start doing pls and then createa custom subset of them for any
, you know, frequency, you'reusing simplex wise.
So, yeah, you know, I, I, Iapplaud, like amy doing all of

(01:55:45):
that over where she's doing anecho woods with all the five two
, you know, trying to get clubsto talk on five two.
I think it would be kind oftough in our club, like I don't
think a lot of the guys wouldjust, you know, do that.
Now, you know, maybe that mightsurprise me, but you know, we
might have to like organizesomething like that at a high
level to be able to geteverybody all on the same page,
all at the same time, becauseyou know, nobody would, you know

(01:56:05):
, remember to go?
Oh, I gotta get my car and, youknow, go out and play on five
two, but I don't know, like robdoes it yeah, I mean, how, how
far do you really get on Simplex?

Speaker 2 (01:56:21):
You've got a good antenna.

Speaker 3 (01:56:22):
It all depends If you're on the road and you're
cruising down and you getsomeone on there, how far are
you going to get, depending onwhere they're going?
If I'm talking to Ryan, I couldprobably get Ryan from his
house.
He starts driving.
If he starts heading south andI head north, like how long is
it going to go before we're nottalking to each other?
It's not very elevation, allright.

(01:56:45):
It also depends on like we'vegot all kinds of freaking
mountains and shit and rock allover the place.
If you were out in the plainswhere it's dead flat, it
probably goes a long way yeah, one watt would carry you pretty
far yeah, I mean, look, look, II told you guys the story about
you.

Speaker 2 (01:57:01):
Know how I?
I was driving south from fromgorham and I was going through
the franconia notch and I wastalking on simplex with a guy
that was on the ferris wheel atstoryland.
Yeah, I, that was a coolfreaking contact, but that was a
that was a good separation.

Speaker 3 (01:57:20):
I just want to know what the hell the guy was doing
in Storyland on the Ferris wheelwith an HD.

Speaker 1 (01:57:26):
He was against there.
He was against his will, therewith his family, of course he
was like I'd rather play radio.
My wife promised me to go toMount.

Speaker 3 (01:57:32):
Washington.
He's like having a conversationwith you, trying to make the
best of the evil eye from hiswife.

Speaker 1 (01:57:42):
Oh, I guarantee she's in the other chair going.
What is that idiot doing?
As you know, why not?
You know, if he could do HF, heprobably would have thrown a
wire off the side of the ortapped in a couple of leads to
the chair itself, and tried to.
You know, you know run the.

Speaker 3 (01:57:58):
Ferris wheel Exactly Run a little RF.

Speaker 1 (01:58:03):
Why am I feeling tingling?

Speaker 2 (01:58:04):
Dude, that would be imagine connected G 90 to the
Ferris wheel Dude maybe that'ssomething we throw out, kevin.

Speaker 1 (01:58:14):
Kevin, if you can find a friend who's got a Ferris
wheel I'm sure they have Cardiscome by all the time that he
can get one ride by himself.
Just tune it up and see whathappens, that would be cool, I
would.
I watch that one.
That would be.
That would definitely be aviral video for him.
It's funny, dude.
Well you know, we're getting, you know, a little deep and wide
in this one, so late for thisguy.

(01:58:37):
Yeah well, dude me.
I you know paul's got an extrahour on the under his belt there
.
I, you know I gotta bolt early.
I gotta try and drive down toconnecticut tomorrow, which is
not gonna be fun.
I'm not gonna be anywhere neariso, which is sad.
So that's my worst part.
Like I could, at least said hey, dude, let's go activate.

Speaker 3 (01:58:54):
No I'm not anywhere near him you're like I gotta
work.

Speaker 1 (01:58:58):
Yeah, exactly right, that would be my that would
always be.

Speaker 3 (01:59:01):
That would be the time he'll be like dude.
I'm up here in new hampshiredude, that would be the case.

Speaker 1 (01:59:06):
Yeah, at that point I'll be ringing you up going.
Dude, hey, find iso now, yeah, quickly.
Uh, all right, well, let's puta bow on this one.
I guess, guys, you know it'sfunny because, like, this is
kind of our period of time.
And so just, I just wasthinking about this in the car
ride on the way back from mainetoday, like, dude, we're getting
into our almost our third yearnow, I think at this point,

(01:59:28):
because our first show startedway back in june, I think it was
, and uh, yeah, we're almost upto.
I was just looking at our thirdyear.
I think we were on our secondyear.
We're yeah, and yeah, we'realmost up to.
I was just looking at.

Speaker 3 (01:59:37):
We're in our third year.
I thought we were in our secondyear.

Speaker 1 (01:59:39):
We're yeah, no, yeah.
So we're two years old now andour first episode started in
June.
So June 5th, which is four daysnow away, in 2023.
So, yeah, it's two years old,so we're probably going to be
getting we're going into ourthird year.

Speaker 3 (01:59:55):
Yeah, so we're going to.

Speaker 1 (01:59:57):
Yeah.
So you know it's kind of notsurprising because you know, I
know at this point we were allplanning for field day and we're
getting crazy with other stuff.
So you know we're just kind ofhanging out.
So if you expected some great, you know amazing topic, which
you know we don't always bringto the table all the time but
you know it was kind of fun justto hang out these.

Speaker 3 (02:00:15):
Do yourself a favor and send us a topic that you
want to hear on live free andham, and we would be glad to
talk about it yeah, that'sactually a good we.

Speaker 1 (02:00:24):
We actually have a over our discord, a uh category
called why can't I find it?
Um, we've got a lot of yeah,it's called listener, submitted
show topic.
So if you got, a short topicyou want to share with us.
Definitely post it over there.
Yeah, go on Discord, Share itwith everyone.

Speaker 3 (02:00:41):
Or send Paul a Winlink.
He'd love it Right, but thatqualifies you for our Winlink
gathering.
We do have to have our Winlinkmembers on a show.

Speaker 1 (02:00:54):
That is on my list stars yeah, and we'll probably
do that, probably in maybe juneor august, when things are a
little quieter and uh, you know,we can finally uh get all that
together.

Speaker 3 (02:01:04):
How many um, how many , uh patreon members we have
right now?

Speaker 1 (02:01:09):
good, question, let me.
I think we got enough, like 12.
Yeah, never enough, but we'reappreciative of those that are
and uh, those folks were at 15active members.

Speaker 3 (02:01:20):
So how many, how many people can we get on the screen
?

Speaker 2 (02:01:23):
Uh 12 at one time, unless unless, right, we put
everybody in discord and thenfeed and then, and then feed
that in.
We could do that, and then it'sjust, and then it's just yeah,
we could do that, and then it'sjust one box with everybody.
That is definitely apossibility.

Speaker 1 (02:01:43):
I noticed that the Discord is now offering an OBS
plugin, so yeah, we might beable to do something.

Speaker 2 (02:01:48):
Is that why Discord keeps freaking telling me that I
have OBS running?

Speaker 1 (02:01:53):
I realized that I kept fighting with it all the
time, so I just shut it off.
But yeah, it is one more thing, one more bit of technology that
I have to fight with to be ableto make work with this, why not
?
So yeah, dude, we'll definitelyhave to do that in the next two
months because I know we haveat least eight paid members, so
we can have no problem beingable to get all eight on this
show if they all wanted to join.

(02:02:14):
I know some of them don't wantto be on, but that's totally
fine.
Hey, just come hang out in thechat for sure, come be part of
the fun and we'll put thattogether soon.
And then, yeah, we're going tobe gearing up soon, probably in
the next two months after that, after June, after field day,
talking more about 24-hourpowder and making sure we get
all our I's done and T to rockand roll with that.

Speaker 2 (02:02:35):
And Huntsville.

Speaker 1 (02:02:37):
Yeah well, you're going to Huntsville so you're
going to have to represent.
You've got a big weight on yourshoulders making sure Liffrey
and Ham is known.
We need to be known.

Speaker 2 (02:02:45):
Well, I'll need to get some more Hammies, because I
think I've only got like twoleft.

Speaker 1 (02:02:50):
If you're going to be back up this way, let me know
and I will lock and load youfull.
You know of a, you know a tonof them, so we can uh spread the
love there.
