line Robert's Rules of Ordertonight, from beginning to end,
guys, you know, I hear it's agreat bedtime story for kids.
Well, no, well, as you can tellby the banjo playing in the
background, we're going to hangout with some cool hillbillies
(00:21):
tonight.

New Hampshire, new England andbeyond.
We're thrilled to have you here, whether you're a regular

it's paul n1og and todd w1stjcool and we've got some great
guests on tonight as well, as wealluded to in the intro.
There, uh say hello guys, uhintroduce yourselves and uh, we
can uh then get into moredetails.
(01:01):
A little bit of show.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
Kilo one Lima, yankee
Shannon.
Speaker 5 (01:07):
Alpha, alpha, four,
alpha, tango Sean.
Speaker 6 (01:10):
Amy was whiskey for
my calf Echo.
Doug Kilo echo for Mike.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Mike.
All right, cool guys.
Well, thank you again forhanging out with us.
Like I said, we are going to betalking to some great people
here and talking around clubstonight, so before we get into
that, let's usually get into thestuff we like to catch
everybody up on.
As always, our storefront is upon livefreeandhamcom forward
slash shop.
Head on over there, check outall our merch.
(01:36):
As always, we still have someof the live free and ham whiskey
glasses in the store and theyare still there and available
for everybody to pick up.
So if you haven't had a chance,I say, run over there now, go
grab your favorite whiskey glassand help support the show.
As always, and we thank you foreverybody who's already bought
a bunch and have added to theirsupply there, and we appreciate
(02:02):
everybody doing that.
And, as always, you can headout and pick our lovely Hamlets.
You know.
You know, for those that mightnot know, we have a little
grassroots project.
If you want to head over to gethamcom, you can check out our
um little Hamlets.
And you know, maybe you mightbe a Jeeper or you know someone
who is a Jeeper and they've gotthis little thing going around
(02:22):
called ducking, and so you might, you know, as a jeeper get a
bunch of ducks and we all haveseen these like colorful ducks
sitting on everybody's dash, andit's kind of a nice, simple,
easy way to say hey, I recognizeyour cool jeep.
Well, we got one for the hamcommunity.
In essence, we want to show youknow to everybody out there.
We drive by every day and I knowabout you, but I'll see people
(02:43):
with antennas on their cars orI'll walk by someone in the
parking lot and catch an antennaoff the corner of my eye and
then I'll look inside to seewhat equipment they have.
Well, I used to leave my QSLcard on the windshield and I
thought that was kind of alittle tacky.
It'd blow away, it'd justdisappear and I'm like it's got
to be something better.
So, lo and behold, we came upHamlet's there, man, and so all
you have to do is take yourlittle call sign, fill it in a
(03:04):
little disc on the bottom, attach it to the bottom of your
Hamlet and then you can leavethat anywhere.
And I guarantee it's a blast,because in essence, I have done
this with several people in andaround the local area and every
time I drop on on a windshieldor on their door lock handle or
whatever.
They walk up to this thing andthey're like the first look in
their face is puzzledness.
But at the same time they seeit, they've gone to the website,
(03:24):
they said this is pretty cool.
And they've responded back.
And you know, so we're justshowing a little love in the ham
radio community and you knowit's all getting warmer around
here and you know what's comingup when it gets warmer.
Right, we've got ham fest.
So, in essence, these areperfect.
You can easily, big gold mine, lay them on any vehicle that you
see within a 10 foot radius andget people involved.
And so head over to gethamcom, check that out and pick
(03:47):
yourselves up some of your own.
All right, as always, we like tosay hey, you guys, we love
feedback, you know, and thisweek the barrel, the bucket, the
, the mailbag, all of it is dry.
And so you know, we want youguys to reach out.
We want you guys to say hello.
You know if you've got aquestion, you're so.
We want you guys to reach out.
We want you guys to say hello.
If you've got a question,something that's been just
bothering you, whatever it is,you can reach out to us and we
(04:11):
here at the Live Free and Hamcommunity want to help.
So, in essence, you can alwaysreach out to us via SMS, simple
link down in all of ourdescriptions.
You can text us your woes, yourham radio challenges or hey,
maybe you ran into a cool story, you got a funny, you know dad
joke you want to share with us?
Feel free, you can do that viaSMS, you can always do it via
(04:32):
our voicemail.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
And that number, Todd
, is.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Why do you do this to
me?
He is waiting for the ticket.
There you go 978-233-1142.
Yep, waiting for the ticker.
There you go.
Nine, seven, eight, two, three, three, one, one, four, two.
Yep, call Todd for a good time,as they say.
So, in essence, you know youcan leave a nice voicemail with
us and we have someone standingby, at least at least the
voicemail standing by, and welove to, you know, play it on.
Thank the few folks that havein the past left us great
(05:03):
messages, and you know we wantto hear from everybody.
So don't be afraid, just goahead.
You know you might be driving.
Stop this podcast.
Go ahead, call the number andleave us a quick message.
It's all we're looking for.
And, as always, if you're likeone of those folks that like to
send via email, you can alwayssend it to livefreeandhim at
(05:25):
gmailcom.
And you can always send it tolivefreeandham at gmailcom.
And as always, as we've saidevery episode and we're going to
keep saying, because, inessence, we're slowly creeping
up on 500 subscribers on ourchannel and so with that we're
hoping to do maybe a fungiveaway live stream.
But if you haven't become asubscriber yet to live free and
ham, head on over to our livefree and ham youtube channel.
Make sure you're a subscriberand, as paul says make sure you
hit that bell.
(05:46):
If you don't hit the bell, youdon't know when we're gonna
actually go in live and I can'ttell you that we don't know when
we're going live.
So, in essence, it's alwaysimportant to make sure that you
know, you get notified.
That way you can come in andparticipate and hang out and
have fun with us when weactually decide to, you know,
get behind the microphone andstart broadcasting.
So all good there, um, so thoseare three easy ways to
(06:06):
obviously get ahold of us.
Or, you know, plus live stream,um, and so, with our last
little thing to say, you know, hey, maybe you haven't become a
Patreon member.
Did you know?
Some of our Patreon members getsome really cool stuff.
You know, if you're asubscriber, as a patron, you

you know you can join for as
little as three hours a month.
It's not a big expense.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
So you can join with
as little as $3 a month.
And, bob, every time I playthat I will give you the
residual.
You know, two pennies two and ahalf two and a half cents per.
You know, two pennies, two anda half two and a half cents per
run.
So just make sure I don't hitthe button too many times, ok?
So with that, let's roll oninto our first episode here.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
Ladies and gentlemen,
can I please have your
attention.
I've just been handed an urgentand horrifying news story.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Everybody we got some
news.
Slow down, Boog, Let news story.
Everybody we got some news,Slow down Boog.
Let me handle this.
We've got some news, I've gotbad news and bad news.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
I have reviewed
ship's personnel Captain.
Congratulations, You've gotmail.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
He's shaking his head
.
No sir, are you waving off thesign there, or what's the deal?
Speaker 3 (08:04):
We don't have any
mail.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
No mail today or this
week, once again a sad todd
again.
That's not good, like, do youunderstand how badly that
impacts todd?
If he can't read mail, he feelslike he's not a complete ham
radio operator, at least for theshow.
Like I don't know what tobetter say that you want Todd,
you want the show, to continueto pay Todd's you know a therapy
(08:27):
bill, because we're eventuallygoing to have to do that because
there's not enough listenerssending in you know reviews.
So so please help Todd out, help us out.
Send in a review.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
I think.
I think the problem is Toddneeds to update his AOL CD, that
he does that he does that, hedoes All right.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
Well, todd, how can
we let folks know how they can
leave us a nice review or sendus feedback or anything?
What's the easiest way?
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Well, you can go to
our website, our email live free
.
And ham, what is it at gmailcom?
That's one.
You can call us 978-233-1142.
There we go.
Two you can send paul a winlink and you can get on the show
.
That's a good, good way.
Okay, you can SMS text us ornice job.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
Are we going to hit
bat a thousand tonight?
Speaker 3 (09:32):
Or you can ask on the
Discord.
There you go, which I amlearning how to use.
You guys can say I'm getting alittle bit better with responses
to that.
You are, you are.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
I appreciate that.
So there you go, guys.
One more thing to monitor, yeah, exactly as if we don't already
have enough.
Anyway, all right, well, thatthat is it here.
You, you know, there are manyways now.
You can send us a review, youcan send us feedback, you can
just send us, uh, you know, uh,hey, I hear you loud and clear
five nine.
So you know, feel free, send itthat way.
(10:02):
We want to hear from you.
What's your excuse?
Anyway, all right, well, if wedive into the next one here
Doing good, good, good.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Good, that's good.
Speaker 7 (10:14):
Do good, do good,
you're doing good, absolutely I
do Good.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Good, I do it.
Good, bob, do it real good.
Right now, my only outlet is myham radio.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
I don't know if I
should just go into the whole
thing.
You know, obviously we've gotno do-goods tonight either and
I'm kind of bummed.
So you know, guys, come on,let's hear it.
We want this warm weather'scoming.
Your clubs, your groups, yourhangout friends, your buddies,
you know you must be doingsomething fun out there, we want
to hear about it.
You know you must be doingsomething fun out there, we want
to hear about it.
(10:46):
You know, let us know, send usan email.
You can send us an SMS text, you can call us up on our
voicemail line or you could goto livefreeandhamcom.
Forward slash, do good and fillin a form and we will do the
rest for you.
So, you know, as always, youknow and you know, I don't know
if we should just throw this out, but I got to throw it out
anyway.
You know, if you are the type A, you know, and you want to like
be part of our members only, you know, um, you know type A
(11:08):
show that we're going to becoming up soon with then uh, you
know, send an email over to uhPaul and one OG at wind link and
, uh, you know, if he gets itthere, then, uh, he'll read it
online and you'll be in thehonorary club of folks that have
sent, you know, a do good viawin link and therefore you get
the honor to come hang out withus.
A private live stream, you know, and we'll set that all up soon
(11:30):
.
So keep an eye out for thosefolks that have already been, uh
, doing the do goods, and wethank you again, guys, for
sending out that stuff.
All right, so with that, we'reon to our apparently the most
popular segment of all of ourentire podcast here and now a
(11:55):
little something extra with ToddWNSTJ.
Okay, before I get into thewhole details here, we have now
more than one v on the show atthis moment.
Uh, you know, uh, sean andshannon are also here, so
(12:17):
literally we could almost do atest if we really wanted to test
me live on the on the podcastthat wouldn't podcast, that
would not go over well, I'm sureat least I'd have the music
right.
True, true, that is an optionbecause we're there to support
you.
You know, sort of like you knowhaving your favorite number two
pencil, or you know yourstuffed animal.
(12:37):
Whatever you want to bringanyway, all right.
Speaker 2 (12:39):
So you know it would
be.
It would be kind of cool tohave a test session live stream.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
We could.
Is there anything in the?
Speaker 2 (12:50):
rules that say that
you can't.
I'd have to look into it.
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
Okay, Well we have
tasked you then Go find out.
I'll be the first person everto be live streamed on a test.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
You'll be like you
know, first guy on the moon,
first guy testing live, yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
And then I fail, and
then the whole world, whole
ham-worthy world, can laugh atme.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
Well, it'll be live
forever embedded, so all right.
So, as you know, if you'veheard it here, this is where we
help Todd study for his extraclass license.
In each episode, we always pickthree questions from the extra
class question pool and we'repicking from the whole entire
pool.
Guys, this is the cool part.
So to test Todd and hisknowledge, hoping he gets his
upgrade.
So if you'd like to followalong, as always, head over to
(13:28):
hamstudyorg, which is a greatresource to help you prepare for
your test and is alwaysrecommended by three out of four
VEs which we have representedhere.
So with that, let's hand itover to our VE Quizmaster, paul.
Go ahead, take it away, sir.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
All, paul, go ahead,
take it away, sir.
All right, hey, first time Iclicked the right button.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
Not bad, not bad.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
All right, todd, so
we are now using the whole
question pool.
I am so happy for you.
We're getting close to the end.
We're getting close to the end.
Thank you, all right, all right.
Question number one for thisevening Atmospheric ducts
(14:14):
capable of propagating microwavesignals often form over what
geographic feature?
Is it A Large bodies of water,b Mountain ranges, c Nimbus
clouds or D Stratocumulus clouds?
Speaker 3 (14:42):
Alright, Paul, I'm
going to go with A large bodies
of water.
Okay.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
I'll go with B, but
do our guests have a choice or
an answer?
Speaker 4 (14:57):
I'd say A.
Speaker 6 (14:58):
Nice, I'm going
between A and B.
Speaker 1 (15:02):
Okay.
Speaker 6 (15:03):
A.
Nice, I'll guess A.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
All right Doug
nothing Smart man.
Zach, I plead the fifth.
All right, a is the correctanswer, wow, yes.
A is the correct answer, wowyes.
Evaporative ducts form overwater, where the cooling near
(15:28):
the surface from evaporationresults in cool air below warm
air and a temperature inversion.
Speaker 1 (15:38):
Okay, not bad.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
Alright, you're one
for one To question number two.
What is the function ofdecimation?
Is it a converting data tobinary coded decimal form, b
removing unnecessary significantdigits, c attenuating the
(16:04):
signal or.
D reducing the effective samplerate by removing samples?
Speaker 1 (16:15):
I'm sorry this wrong
didn't get that one of the
button.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
Decimation I'm going
to go with A I haven't seen, I
can't remember this oneDecimation, decimal.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
I'm going to go with
B.
I definitely feel it's aRemoving of something.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
Amy.
Me Doug.
Speaker 6 (16:44):
I can't remember that
one.
Well, maybe there we go.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Alright, so.
Speaker 4 (16:53):
I'm going with D.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
Okay, ooh, d.
So Todd said A, which isincorrect.
Then we had a, d, b yeah, nicejob, b, yeah, b and a Nice job D
is correct.
Reducing the effective samplerate by removing samples.
So decimation refers todestruction.
(17:18):
To decimate, specifically toremove digital samples from a
stream of samples in an analogsignal.
If not done properly, it canlead to aliasing noise.
A decimator, which is what asystem component that does this
process is called, is typicallyemployed to reduce the data
(17:39):
capacity requirements when asignal is sampled at relatively
high sample rate requirementswhen a signal is sampled at
relatively high sample rate.
In these situations, an analogsignal is sampled at a very high
rate and then filtered in thedigital domain to remove noise
or high-frequency components, which can be significantly more
efficient than analog filters, and then decimated to a lower
(18:03):
effective sample rate to reducethe amount of data required to
reliably regenerate the signal Idon't know about you, but my
nuns used to whack me on thewrist when I used the word in
the definition.
But whatever all right todd%.
Question number three which ofthe following is used to measure
(18:28):
SLR?
Is it A.
A directional wattmeter?
B an antenna analyzer, c?
All of these choices are or D,vector network analyzer.
What's the?
Speaker 6 (18:47):
easy one.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
I hate when they say
all these choices are correct.
I know it's an antenna analyzer.
The other ones I've never usedor have any of those things.
So all right, well, I'm goingto.
(19:13):
I'm going to say antennaanalyzer, but it might be all of
them.
I go with C.
All right, I'll go with Eric,then C.
Oh, he changed a bit, right, Iknow it's antenna analyzer is
one of them other ones.
I.
I think this is all of them.
I'll go with c2.
Final answer.
(19:34):
Yeah, that's my final answer cis correct thanks buddy that I
know, is this the third one?
Speaker 2 (19:45):
it is, yeah.
So the swr, or standing waveratio, is the voltage ratio of
the largest voltage on thetransmission line to the
smallest voltage and it dependson how much signal is reflected
back from some device, typicallyyour antenna.
When no signal is reflectedback, you have a traveling wave
(20:10):
with the intended signal at fullpower.
All the time.
When some power is reflectedback, the forward and backward
waves will interfere with one, sometimes increasing and
sometimes decreasing the voltage.
The ratio of those two voltagesis the variable SWR.
So all the named devices canmeasure SWR.
(20:35):
You've got the VNA, can measuremany properties of the system,
including SWR, the antennaanalyzers, more specifically, to
measure SWR.
And the wattmeter goes betweenyour radio and feed line, which
measures the power you'reputting out.
But a bidirectional wattmeterwill also measure the reflected
(20:56):
power.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
So there, you have it
, and with that brings my
favorite song, oh well.
So if you're on the journey ofstudying for your technician,
general or extra class, likeTodd, in that case Hampstudyorg
(21:18):
is an excellent resource forgetting your ticket.
You know, as always, we alwayslike to say hey, if you recently
received your license, or maybeyou just upgraded.
You know, we want to know soyou can be recognized on our
next episode.
Uh, and so you know, for allyour hard work and effort.
So if you want to send us anemail, you can send it over to
live free at ham at gmailcom, and we'll mix you on the next
show.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
Paul, you got any
that you've picked up on in your
uh travels?
Uh, so I, your uh travels, uhso I I gotta say, listen you, we
need a live, free and hamreddit presence now.
Now, reddit is a cesspool, buthowever, uh, I I did see
recently this week, uh, I thinkthere was there was uh one new
tech and a couple people thatthey got their generals and they
were super excited about it andvery happy about it, and I
congratulate them on Reddit, butthey didn't post call signs or
(22:08):
anything, so I have no way ofactually recognizing them,
bummer.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
Okay, well, those on
Reddit, come on, those are our
post-your-call signs.
Post your call signs so we canslurp that stuff out of there,
and that way we don't have tocreate our own cesspool called
Live Free at the Ham.
Oh my gosh, I would not evenwant to touch that with a
10-foot pole trying to managethat.
Oh boy, okay, well with that.
(22:34):
Um, so we usually like to getin our usual format here, so
we've got a couple of guests.
Uh, obviously we mentioned atthe beginning of the show, um,
so we're going to give them thefloor first.
So we we'll start with Shannonthere.
We always ask everybody everyweek on their show how's your
ham radio week been?
Speaker 4 (22:51):
It's been slow.
We went out last weekend, got155 on Saturday.
Was it on Saturday?
No, saturday was when we gotonly like 10 or 11.
We went on sunday and got 155,so it was pretty good.
I'm I'm proud of that one.
We did get uh indonesia on ssb.
(23:14):
I think it was 15 meters, 10 or15 meters, so that was exciting
.
Um, I haven't done a lot ofhunting this week, which I
typically do during the week, because when he would come home
in the evenings he's gotsomething going on like on
YouTube, so I can't hearanything.
Yeah, that might work if one ofus is the other, so, but yeah,
(23:40):
I got it.
It's been a slow week, but Okay, cool, nice.
Speaker 1 (23:46):
So no, no, no bumping
the VFO knob or anything like
that at all.
Speaker 4 (23:50):
Just want to.
You know, everything's all.
That was not me.
I get to blame for it, but thatwas not me.
Speaker 1 (23:56):
As long as we were
clear with that, and so just to
give our audience a little bitof understanding, I was actually
activating.
I think it was last Sunday Ican't remember the date or time
frame and these guys hunted medown and shannon got out there
and she was like, ah, I've gotthree other hot, you know three
other people here, operatorshere, and and I'm like okay,
bring them on.
And then it just went dead forlike five minutes and meanwhile,
(24:18):
like everybody, I'm likeshannon, you're there, like come
on, come back into the outside.
Because all right, maybe the, maybe the band conditions, just
you know, dived.
And then I put my qrz back outthere and all of a sudden I got
like 15 more people.
I was just like no, the bandsaren't dead.
And then, you know, all of asudden I hear you guys come back
.
So it was like okay, cool, allright, good, let's get the rest
of the guys in the log here andmove on.
So that was a good uh, good, uh,activation and definitely, um,
(24:41):
you know, bumped me up in my uhnumbers there.
So, yeah, the four you guyshelped out a lot for sure.
Cool, all right.
Well, over to you.
Amy, how's your hammer?
Do you wake been?
Speaker 6 (24:53):
I've not really done
much.
Nothing.
I've had a lot of stuff goingon family and everything.
But I do have a report on aco-worker he uh, within a month
he got his extra oh sweet, nice, cool.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
You know how long he
was studying for is it just
something pretty quick for him,or?
Speaker 6 (25:09):
he was pretty quick
because he's an engineer at work
oh yeah, that'll do it, thathelps I didn't know nothing and
I've done mine in a monthawesome dude, that's great, yeah
, I I just like getting a littlehard rub and salt the wound
Speaker 1 (25:27):
todd's exposing his
heart to everybody, and you just
come by with a bucket of sandtook me a month.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
What's wrong with you
?
I didn't know nothing, that'sall right we haven't applied
enough pressure on todd.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
He's kind of been
skating for a little while and
you know we just got to get therest of the live free and hand
community and you're hearing ithere first.
You know, start sending email, hitting todd up in discord.
What's up with your extra man?
Because last time I checked itwas extra before april, but uh,
you know that would only put youwhat two days away one day.
Speaker 2 (25:55):
Well, okay, april
12th.
April 12th is the next gsarasession, so okay, so it's
possible, you better registerthere you go.
Speaker 3 (26:06):
I think I had
baseball that day, I bet all
right, cool.
Speaker 1 (26:12):
Well, with that, uh,
you know, over to you, doug.
How's your hammer day wake been?
Speaker 7 (26:16):
I hadn't really met
you the radio this week okay,
cool, no problem there.
Speaker 1 (26:22):
We all have those
weeks and we've gone you know
dry spells for a little while.
Hopefully you got something onthe horizon coming up soon.
Yeah, going to go do some podaSweet.
Nice, do you guys have afavorite park you like to go to?
Or are you just trying to worka kilo or anything specific at a
park you got coming up?
Speaker 7 (26:41):
Not really, but we
have a park less than five miles
away nice, that's a, that's aconvenience for sure.
Speaker 1 (26:51):
Always, uh, after
work, before work and during
work lunch break yeah, trust methat that is a a common thing
with me.
I've been known to take mylunch break at a park well, now
you're definitely gonna have totake your lunch break at a park,
because I'm 107 contacts.
I know, I know we're working onit.
Speaker 3 (27:09):
I was been ahead of
him for like a year and then he
decides to well, just catch upyou went to california and you
got hit with the cme I stayedhere in new england I had 107
contacts.
Speaker 1 (27:19):
Do you see the
problem there?
Speaker 3 (27:21):
yeah, I see it so it
it's very disappointing.
I had big expectations and Igot nothing.
Speaker 1 (27:28):
Yeah, well, you
barely activated the park out
there, right, I know?
Speaker 3 (27:31):
Two and a half hours
and 12 contacts.
Speaker 1 (27:34):
Well, we'll get into
you in a second, but with that,
let's head over to Sean.
How was your hemorrhoid, myfriend?
Speaker 5 (27:40):
For me it's mostly
just been studying CW, trying to
learn that.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
Oh nice.
For me it's mostly just beenstudying cw, trying to learn
that.
Oh nice.
How, how far are you in?
Speaker 5 (27:49):
you?
You basically able to copy codeyet or are you still working on
that early and I'm only threeweeks in?
Speaker 1 (27:53):
I applaud you, my
friend.
Uh, we, we've got a you knowkind of scenario up here in our
club where a bunch of our guyswho are learning cw use like, um
, uh, what's that?
Uh, online v-band, thank you, yeah, and they do that a lot and
I still, I mean, I tried it fora little bit and I just my ears
and brain do not, yeah, stoprubbing it in.
That's the key.
That would probably put me overthe edge.
(28:14):
He's running the modern morsekey that he's hiding over there
ever.
So, uh, you know quietly, butuh, yeah, no, I, I give you
credit, man, is it somethingthat you you do when you how
long you've been a ham?
Do you have to get your CW whenyou were him or no?
Speaker 5 (28:27):
No, originally, when
I wanted to go for my license
back in the 80s, it was arequirement.
I picked up the book andcassette tapes from Radio Shack.
I opened it up, I saw Morsecode and I said I'm working two
or three jobs.
I don't have time for this.
Two or three jobs, I don't havetime for this.
(28:47):
And it was only I don't knowwhat three, four years ago that
I got my license and now it'slike all right, that's this
year's goal.
By next winter field day.
I'd like to work cw that dude.
Speaker 1 (28:55):
That's great goal,
man, we'll definitely keep in,
hopefully, uh, on top and checkin with you, because it's funny
like I've heard more and morepeople now that the code
requirements gone after the past, you know 10 years, everybody's
just like.
I've heard more and more peoplenow that the code requirements
gone after the past, you know 10years, everybody's just like I
want to go.
Like even paul has gone fromlike just sideband only to cw
now.
Like he's just like all of asudden, like I'm enjoying cw and
I was like, dude, what's what?
What brings us on and you know, but that's the mo.
(29:17):
A lot of people are like, hey,I can learn it at my own pace
and not have to feel like I haveto, you know, study for it for
to get my next license greatupgrade and it's nice that you
can go out there with like a qrpradio and really get out there
yeah.
Well, you're probably good tostudy now because, as what cycle
25 starts to go in the toilet, you know we're gonna have to
(29:38):
have, like you know, you'regonna have to run cw to be able
to make a good contact.
Your sideband is going to betougher than you know.
We all have been living high onthe high horse these past five
or six years making contacts.
It's going to be a struggle.
I think I learned that hard, the hard way.
I brought my FX4CR to the beachat a vertical and I, you know,
barely made like 12 contacts andI'm like I'm running at 20
(29:59):
Watts.
Man, this is tough.
Give me my hundred.
I'm ready back, please.
You know we have to haul.
You know big power to the beach.
Very cool guys, all right.
Well, you know.
With that, let's bring it overto our usuals.
How's your hammery week, paul?
Well, oh, that's a loadedquestion.
Oh, he switches views.
(30:21):
How you doing?
Speaker 2 (30:23):
How you doing so, all
right.
So Friday I had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
Okay, sorry to hear it.
So my solution, my solution wasto go to my favorite park and
activate.
(30:43):
To go to my favorite park andactivate.
Now, mind you, okay, forwhatever reason, friday we had
super high winds.
It was ridiculous.
So what I did was I actuallybacked my truck up on the
waterline so that the passengerside of the truck was almost in
the water, and then I put mytable and everything on the
(31:06):
driver's side of the truck so Icould use the truck as a
windbreak and I had the sun inmy face for a good good.
You know two and a half hours.
Um, I I got, uh, I think, 92,93 contacts, um, which puts me
up to 727 contacts for the park.
Nice, nice.
Speaker 1 (31:25):
So I'm getting the
kilo.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
Got it.
Yeah, I'm getting close to, uh,to to getting that kilo, um, so
yeah, you know, um.
I guess my moral of the storyright is if you, if you're
having a bad day, just go andplay radio in a park, because
that that'll make your daybetter or call the poda dogs and
then go play radio yeah, well, you know, I mean it was.
(31:50):
It was a friday afternoon, Ifigured you were working, todd
was working, yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:54):
When have I ever said
no to you know, no to POTA and
yes to work?
Come on, my friend.
I would have been like let's go, that's okay, I'll let it go,
I'll let it slide.
You made some good contacts.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
Fair warning, though.
You know you both have been outto my favorite park and it's
all dirt roads.
It's all dirt roads to get outthere.
They are absolutely terribleBig mud ruts and they're out
there trying to fix the roads up, I had a couple roads that were
(32:28):
closed and I had to try andnavigate my way around.
I thought I was going to end upon a snow wheel trail, but it
it turned back into a road.
Speaker 3 (32:37):
So it is.
It is an awesome park.
It's once you get to it yeah, once you get to it in the spot
that he found it's.
It's like right on the water, nice little pond or lake or
whatever you want to call it,but it's just, it's quiet, no
one's bothering you.
And when watson's there and ifsomeone dares comes up the park,
be aware, because watsondoesn't like visitors right.
(33:01):
Remember that time his father'spark right when we were at
watson, like he was in the truckand like some guy came up on a
bike and watson went nuts, likelike you're not coming up here,
but yeah, no, he was doing hisjob, but uh, shannon had
mentioned hitting Indonesia,which is fantastic.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
I wish that I could
have made contact, but I heard
several Japan stations on 15meters and like I mean from New
Hampshire to Japan sideband, like that's amazing.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
That's long path
guaranteed.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
Oh yeah, so that was
really cool.
I could hear them clear as day,but they were making contact
with other stations so it wouldhave been rude to be like, hey,
hold on, Japan station Can getme real quick I'm qrp, come on,
I'm qrp, I'm really 100 watts,because everybody else that's
hitting you is on a kilowatt, which is always the case.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
Yeah, japan was quite
loud on ft8.
I was very surprised mostmidday and I was like what the
heck is going on with 15.
But uh, yeah, cool on that.
Nice, awesome, you all good, anything else, no, that's it.
Okay, cool, that's enough.
All right, and I'm just gonnaput a little bug in your ear.
I know you're going to acertain marconi next sunday, so
(34:26):
put my name in the hat I'm.
You know we're gonna have tocircle back around with that one
.
I I gotta take you to the bestseafood stuff down there, but at
the same time we all have to.
You know I'm seafood stuff downthere, but at the same time we
all have to.
You know I'm going to head downwith you, we'll go.
Speaker 2 (34:36):
But you're welcome.
You're welcome to come.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
Well, I will be there
All right.
Well, with that over to you, mrTodd, how was your hammered
week, sir?
Speaker 3 (34:46):
Well, if you count my
California trip, it started off
pretty sucky.
I was really hoping to getAustralia.
It started off pretty sucky.
I was really hoping to getAustralia.
I mean Australia, hawaii andAlaska, being on the West Coast
and the bands were crap.
And I did activate a park, tookme two and a half hours to get
12 contacts, barely made it, butI was glad to get it and I put
it into the POTA app and it allcleared.
(35:08):
So I got another park, but itwas a struggle.
Other park, but uh, it was a,it was, it was a struggle.
Um, besides that, um, today II've been working on my shack so
I I leave my radio on and uh,it was.
This weekend was a.
Uh, what is it?
The dx?
yeah, cq, worldwide, yeah, wasit and it was like 20 meters,
(35:32):
was absolutely filled from, likethere was no space, Like the
waterfall was just blasting me.
So I just kind of went aroundand tried to find some.
So today I worked, uh, MadeiraIsland twice.
I got that.
Yeah, I think I got them onlike 10 meters.
Italy, I did all 10 meterstoday, Uh, France, Cyprus,
(35:54):
Estonia and and two USA I was in.
Where were they?
One was Kansas and I don't knowwhere, the other one was, so
Midwest.
Speaker 5 (36:07):
But yeah, so I was
just nonchalantly.
Speaker 3 (36:09):
just you know, I was
doing other things and I'd
scroll over and I'd get them andI'd get their call sign and I'd
wait and they'd call CQ andwithin one or two shots I was
doing other things and I Iscroll over and I'd get them,
I'd get their call sign and I'dwait and they'd call CQ and
within one or two shots I was inthere.
But I looked up these guysstations and they're like huge.
I mean they've got like 15enormous and tenant towers all
on a field with you know goingin every which direction.
But it's always fun when theythey go out there, cause you can
(36:33):
get a lot, of, a lot of cooldifferent areas, so nice.
Speaker 1 (36:36):
That's a all for it,
man.
Yeah, hunting's always good, especially, you know.
I mean you'll probably neverget any confirmations from any
of those.
You know big stage, I know.
Speaker 3 (36:45):
but I feel like a
loser, Like you had to tell him
like what number Can I get yourthing?
He's like.
He's like 3,423.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
I'm like eight, yeah,
I, I, uh.
I didn't get a chance toparticipate in it because
apparently my flex decided tolose his connection to the
internet somewhere along theline so I couldn't remote into
it.
Speaker 3 (37:07):
But uh, yeah it was a
bummer, so it was, it was fun.
So, eric, uh, what'd you dothis week at at ham radio?
Speaker 1 (37:13):
oh, this week at ham
radio.
Well, I um, last week I endedup, like I mentioned earlier.
We did a sunday poda.
My wife had decided to go outand do some shopping and it was
a great day and I was like I'mnot going shopping, we're gonna
take the radio out and we'regonna go work some stations and
and so, uh, I figured, you know,I'd spin the dial and figure
out what places I could activatearound me.
(37:35):
But then I was like you know, Ihaven't done the rail trail in
a while and I know Todd's likegot eight contacts ahead of me.
Let's put a kibosh on thatpretty quickly.
So I rolled down there set up myWilford recoil on a center
loaded version.
(37:56):
And I have to thank Paul forgiving me all of those cool neon
spikes, twisted spikes, becauseI, the wind was just enough
that on a center-loaded you knowwilford recoil, sb 1000, if you
get the coil up above it justbecomes this like big giant,
like leaf on the wind and itjust whips and like literally it
was off to my left and I thinkit was before I started, uh,
responding to shannon's call.
I looked over and all of asudden something whacked me on
the top of the head and I wentwhat the heck is that?
Looked up, didn't see anything.
(38:17):
It was my antenna.
It literally had bent over sofar at the tip of the whip, hit
me in the top of the head and Iwent oh my, my antenna went from
vertical to horizontal and itwas like, literally, just like
you know, it had no other wayexcept to bend.
So, yeah, I was like, okay, allright, cool, yeah, thank you
(38:40):
for those spikes, paul.
I appreciate them.
So they worked out wonderful.
And, yeah, 107 contacts on thatactivation.
And then I don't think I didanything this week.
Most of this week was just kindof running around doing some
other stuff.
I didn't get a chance.
Uh, again, work is getting inthe freaking way of everything
I'm doing.
I didn't get a chance to get ona live stream for northeast ham
(39:01):
radio, so I was bummed aboutthat.
Uh, that was a fun uh, eventhough it's fun to be in the
chat and uh, I did catch, uh,you know paul's uh weekend
warriors too, a little bit hereand there.
So all good stuff.
I mean, dude, you've been likelive streaming literally from
friday to today.
I mean like you haven't stoppedyet, have you?
So?
Speaker 2 (39:19):
yeah, well, yeah, he
lives he lives on live stream
yeah, close, but the funny thingis is I I actually I would
rather live stream than makevideos I know like I have a lot
more fun live streaming so cool, yeah, and I it's funny, I on
Friday, I actually Friday partof my.
Speaker 1 (39:39):
The reason why I was
like running around was I had my
50th.
Let me short, short the story.
I haven't finished putting thevideo up, but it'll be out in a
couple of years.
I had to get a tattoo.
Like I let my kids write apassage, you know, they turned
18, they go out and got theirtattoos, and and uh.
So when I told the kids I'mlike, yeah, a 50, I want to go
get my tattoo, my daughter'slike, oh, I'll pay for it.
I'm like, well, if mydaughter's gonna pay for a
(40:00):
tattoo, heck, yeah, we're gonnago do it.
I'm getting a whole sleeve.
No, I, I'm thinking that now,like I'm a virgin tattoo, so
like my first tattoo, I don'tknow if you can see it here.
So this is it, you know's.
You know you can't see the backof it, but you can catch the
video on it.
And so, unbeknownst to my wife,I was like, okay, I've got a
little.
Um, you know, I've got theground symbol, the arrow ground
(40:21):
symbol on the back here that youcan't see, and right below it I
convinced myself I needed totattoo myself on my call sign.
So it's forever there.
I can't change it now.
So so I am locked in as N1JURforever and it's on the back of
my.
And the one thing my wife saysto me you know why didn't you
get my name tattooed on them?
Like the wedding ring is goodenough, isn't it?
Come on, really, like you knowwhat that means.
(40:43):
That's like instant divorce.
Like what'd you get your wife'sname tattooed on you?
Well, so what you, Eric, rightIs is take your wedding ring off
and on the inside of yourfinger, just put her name right
there.
Okay, I don't know if I want totattoo that part of my body
quite yet.
I still want to get the sleevein, though.
So you know, well, we're we'rejust hooked on this, though, and
(41:05):
I got a great tattoo artist.
He's good friend of the family,so, uh, you know he's he's not
helping the process there about,uh, you know saying, hey, you
only really need one.
He's like, oh, let's thinkabout the next one.
So yeah, they're.
Speaker 2 (41:16):
They're addictive,
it's.
It's just like getting yourfirst radio right once you get
your first one, you got to getanother and another and another
right.
Speaker 1 (41:24):
Tattoos are the same
way, and we all you'll you'll
end up being a coloring book, just like me oh boy, yeah, black
and black and gray, right, ah,cool I guess I got some color.
Oh, yeah, you do have color.
I didn't know you should did so, okay, cool.
So, yeah, that was my Fridaytrip and I had to do.
I was doing my because Ihaven't done in a while a
(41:45):
channel update, because I have alot of people going, hey, are
you still doing videos?
And I'm like, yeah, I'm stilldoing videos.
I got a bunch of the queue, yeah, I'm still doing videos.
I got a bunch in the queue Ihaven't just edited and so I did
a, you know, a channel update.
And, of course, my last part ofthe video was, you know me
ending while they're actuallytattooing the back of my arm,
which is the most pain for inthis area in general, it's the
most painful part and, of course, he was just doing all the
(42:07):
shading at that point.
So I'm like trying to talkthrough it and I'm like gritting
my teeth, you know.
So you'll have to catch thatpart of the video.
It's just a little comedy.
Uh, well worth it.
So I'll go, yeah, hey come on Itold you virgin tattoo all
right, wait, wait.
Speaker 2 (42:23):
So you do like your
collarbone or your elbow, or
your spine I'll have to show youmy son's tattoo.
Speaker 1 (42:30):
My son got a chest
tattoo of a buffalo and they had
to actually blacken his nippleand I have the video of him
wincing his nipple gettingtattooed in black and it was
like well, his sister was likedude, this is awesome.
I want this video forever.
So, yeah, cool, cool, cool, cool all right.
Well, enough of the tattoos, because we are a ham radio show
(42:52):
sort of.
So let's get into things here.
So you know, guys, I want toapologize up front.
First, you know, because at thevery beginning of the show we,
you know, maybe you got excitedwhen I said you know we were
going to talk about Robert'srules of order.
No excitement at all.
Okay, good Listen.
Speaker 2 (43:12):
I was a
parliamentarian.
So if you, if you, want todiscuss Robertbert's rules, we
can.
Speaker 1 (43:18):
We can absolutely do
that.
So let me put this caveat hereif you want us to talk about it
and you are a subscriber to ourdiscord, then head over to our
channel that's listenersubmitted show topics and say
you want us to talk aboutrobert's rule of order and maybe
we will vote it in as an audiotopic that we want to talk about
.
So you you know, I can onlyimagine what that's going to
(43:39):
bring.
I'm sure everyone's gonna belike, yes, let's talk about
Robert's rule of order.
This would be awesome.
I watch our show plummet downto like two subscribers, so
anyway, so we're not going to betalking about Robert's rules
tonight.
However, however, you know wewant to continue our
conversation.
Like we talked about lastepisode and if you haven't had a
chance to catch that head overand check out, our last week's
(44:01):
episode was your website sucksum, and we were talking about uh
and and dropping names andagain, our whole purpose behind
that show wasn't to justbasically tear clubs down.
It was like just to make youguys aware that your website is
important.
It's a vehicle to like tellyour story about what's actually
going on in your club.
Maybe you have a very busy club, but, gosh, if I went to some
(44:23):
of those websites I'd be likethe ham radio is dead, my friend
.
You know the fact that they, just they, you know coded in
HTML.
Speaker 2 (44:36):
They're updating it
manually.
Speaker 1 (44:37):
That alone just kind
of just was like rub me the
wrong way.
Bad websites are killing hamradio.
Exactly, here we go New t-shirt.
So with that we figured okay.
Our next episode.
We got to talk about clubs, because we know that the fabric
and the connective tissue ofclubs are the people inside the
club that make it the best, andthey're usually the folks that
are most passionate about stuff.
They like going out and playingham radio and they like doing
(44:59):
radio because it's a ham radiohobby.
Why not do it in a club?
That's a ham radio club.
You know?
That's simple logic.
So we figured heck.
We know a couple of people andthey have a fricking awesome
club.
I don't know about you, and ifyou haven't noticed, and you're,
you're on the podcast only.
You know all of us.
You know we are.
What would you say?
You know passionate followers.
(45:20):
You know we decided that weshould all run out and buy our
own professional overall, so wecould be part of, or maybe
indoctrinated into, thehillbilly club tonight.
Maybe that's a possibility, youknow here we go.
Those that might not be on thepodcast, you can always check
(45:41):
over.
We'll have this photo on ourwebsite of their club, their
official uniform and this is theonly club that I know
officially it has a uniform umis overalls and I was like dude
and nevertheless, you know, doesit cost extra, uh, sean, to not
have shirts, or is that just asecond like?
Is that just optional?
Speaker 5 (45:54):
no, I was like I
gotta live up to the stereotype,
okay, all right, maybe.
Speaker 1 (46:00):
Maybe it's like a
step up, like as an executive
you have to be in that you knowthat's your official official
uniform.
Speaker 5 (46:05):
It was cold, I would
say I'm trying not to show it
okay, all right.
Speaker 2 (46:11):
So I was to go
shirtless tonight, and then I
was like it's too damn cold, I'mwearing a sweatshirt and a long
sleeve under it.
Speaker 5 (46:21):
I had to dress up.
I got my someday shirt on.
Speaker 1 (46:25):
Oh, very cool.
Okay, so we appreciate it.
We do have this is sort of afamily show light on the family
side, but you know, hey, eitherway all cool.
So good deal, all right well,so as well.
Sorry, we cut out there alittle bit, shannon no, I'm
sorry.
Speaker 4 (46:42):
I was gonna say it
was literally freezing the day
that we took the photo.
It was our first groupactivation and it was freezing
and we waited till the end ofthe day to take the picture and
all we could do to stand therelong enough for the camera to go
off.
Speaker 1 (46:58):
All chittering, is
your teeth chattering Now, when
you mean cold like up here inthe northeast?
Cold for us is, like you know, negative 12.
Like we're talking about like65?
.
Speaker 4 (47:07):
No, it was in the 30s
that day it was.
December 23rd and so our coldis.
But we were off the lake there,so the wind was blowing on top
of it.
The wind chill had a little bitlower, but you know, if it hits
below 40 here I'm freezing wellmy son.
Speaker 3 (47:25):
When it hits 30, he's
wearing shorts and a sweatshirt
.
That's annoying anything abovefreezing.
Speaker 5 (47:31):
It's shorts time we
were out there we were out there
activating and she was likesomebody says, oh, is it cold
there?
Oh yeah, it's cold.
Meanwhile it's in the 40s andshe's like, oh, it's like 40
something here, and the guy'slike it's minus 30.
I'm in Alaska.
Speaker 1 (47:51):
Oh man, that's
awesome, her face just dropped.
Yeah, that's awesome, her facejust dropped.
Yeah, that that's chilly, man.
That is definitely like wear, wear a second, you know, hat on
top of the hat you're alreadywearing, so cool.
So let me, um, let me kind offrame this out a little bit, you
know.
So, as I was saying, we wantedto bring on, you know, I think
what we, we got us here at livefree and ham think is a really
(48:12):
cool like example of how to do aclub.
Now, there are many ways to doclubs and all of them have their
own, you know, pluses andminuses, but we feel like, you
know, these guys have done areally good job of just, you
know, exemplifying the spirit of, like pam radio, having fun,
like the three-letter word thatwe all struggle to, you know,
(48:32):
keep doing and, you know, justmake it light and fun and casual
.
And so we asked Shannon, weasked Sean and Amy and Doug to
come on, and they graciouslyaccepted and, and so we're glad
to have you guys on tonight.
Thank you guys again for comingand working.
Uh, you know out, uh, the timethat worked for everybody here.
But so let me kind of um getinto a little bit of uh, you
(48:54):
know discussion here.
So just to kind of shape it outright now, so like and I got to
go back on this one with youShannon is, um, you know, so you
guys have five people currentlyin the club and that's you,
shannon.
As I quote jabber jaws, I gotto circle back on why you're
jabber jaws, but we'll talkabout that a second.
And then we got sean uh, a480,um, and then luis is not here
(49:17):
tonight.
He is your, your token, uh, youknow, uh, you know, what would
you see?
I?
d d I club member, okay.
And then, uh, we've got amy andw4mae and roy, right or no?
My dog, dog, okay.
Speaker 6 (49:33):
So that's why I was W
for M-A-E and Roy right.
I go by.
Speaker 1 (49:35):
Doug, doug.
Okay, so that's why I wasconfused.
Like Roy, like whatever.
Where's Roy?
We're all good.
Okay, so that's like my otherbrother.
Yeah, the movie show Daryl.
Speaker 2 (49:47):
Yeah, exactly, I'm
Daryl.
Speaker 3 (49:49):
That was.
Speaker 1 (49:50):
K for M-M.
So all right.
So I guess Shannon and Sean, you guys kind of want to give us
a little bit first, tell uskind of how you got into the
hobby, you know, share a littlebit of your story there for all
you guys, and then you know Iwant to talk a little bit more
your club and you know kind ofwhat led you to, you know, doing
this club.
Again, this club is a freakingawesome.
(50:10):
I love their stickers, I lovetheir you know logo and
everything that into the shownotes there.
So you guys check it out.
But so we'll leave it to youguys.
So it kind of gives you alittle hammery story a little
bit and then we'll kind of divea little bit into the.
Speaker 5 (50:21):
You know how the club
kind of formed and you know why
you guys wanted to do it well,I like I said I wanted to get
into it in the 80s and the morsecode kept me away from it.
And then, years later, therewas a guy in the area that was
just doing a presentation on hamradio and shannon is very
preparedness minded, anyhow.
She's like want to go down andcheck that out?
(50:43):
Yeah, I'll go down.
And then, um, she walked out ofthere going I didn't need to
know, you needed to know so much.
And I'm like I didn't know.
They dropped morse code, I'mgonna do this.
And then so I got mytechnicians and then about a
year later, a guy from a localclub said he was doing risk-free
(51:06):
testing and where if you didn'tpass, he wasn't going to make
you pay.
Wow, and he told shannon youhad to take it.
It was two weeks away.
Speaker 4 (51:20):
I basically said I'll
study but I'm sure I'm not
going to make it because I don'tknow all this technical stuff.
I took the hamstudyorg, startedon it and just started writing
down every question and goingI'm like, okay, I've got it
memorized now, all thosequestions, so I think I can go
in and take the test.
I went and took the test andthen they're like, well, you
(51:40):
can't stop there.
And I'm like sure I can.
They're like, no, no, no, Icome back.
And I studied for two moreweeks, got my general, and then
they're like well, you, you gotgenerally, you'll do extra.
And I'm like, no, I'm not, youknow, not gonna do it, yeah, you
gotta do it.
So everybody was pushing me andI went back three weeks later
(52:01):
and got the extra um, but wenever.
You know, we had the handheldand we never really got onto the
radio until, uh, a year ago forhf, uh, here at the house we
had the base station.
But to get out in the field wasexactly a year ago for the
(52:21):
international women's day, firsttime we ever activated.
So it was like, you know, Icall it ham crack.
I got into that and I just I, Ican't stop, you know.
So I'm the one that pusheseverybody to get out and go and
get out and go.
And basically, you know, we westarted there.
We started out with a localclub.
(52:42):
Um, got a little too businesslike for us and we decided that,
hey, we want to enjoy the hobbyand not be so, uh, strapped
down to the business side ofeverything.
So five of us, like amy amyworks with sean, so you know
we're constantly going back andforth and we just decided, you
(53:04):
know that we were going to startour own club.
You know, researched what weneeded to get a club and, um,
lewis is our president, sean'sthe vice president and of course
, I'm the secretary, uh, jack ofall trades and uh, you know
doing those things.
And I said we can do this.
(53:24):
We just got to, you know, doacross the T's and dots the eyes
and we did it, got it togetherin less than a month's time and
got our applied for our call.
Speaker 1 (53:35):
Awesome.
Now, you did allude to Seanworking with Amy.
Now, Amy, how forceful was Seanin making you become a
technician?
Or was it like, hey, what'sthis thing you do called Ham
Radio?
How did that kind of play out?
Speaker 6 (53:52):
Well, it's actually
two people.
The guy that was telling aboutthe testing was actually a
co-worker with us at the time.
Okay, and Sean and I workedtogether.
What 12, 13 years now.
Speaker 5 (54:04):
Yep.
Speaker 6 (54:04):
Yeah, and he come and
was talking about doing the ham
radio and all that, and thenthe engineer comes too.
Well, they were saying, oh,let's go a week away from
testing.
And then Shannon like she saidbefore, this was earlier that
(54:24):
she messaged me and challengedme pretty much, and so from
there it went.
I got my take in a week, mygeneral in two weeks, extra in a
week.
Speaker 1 (54:36):
Holy moly.
See, that's.
The problem is I'm using thewrong words with Todd.
I should be using words likechallenge you instead of like
stop sitting on your hands andget moving.
Wow, okay, cool, wow, that'simpressive.
Before you got on here Seansaid.
Speaker 3 (54:52):
He says you know, I
only listen to the show until we
get done with your X-ray.
Speaker 5 (54:57):
I just turn it off,
didn't you say that, sean?
No, I was just playing a couplemore stuff.
Speaker 3 (55:02):
Yeah, it's okay, the
show will be nothing when I get
my X-ray, the radians andeverything will just drop off
and it'll be over, we'll justrandomly test you on the spot
kind of thing, just to see howyou hold up.
Speaker 1 (55:17):
Okay, cool.
So you pretty much flew throughyour, your, your whole license
testing session.
Speaker 3 (55:23):
She's given me, amy's
given me a lot of inspiration,
because she told me that sheknew nothing like me, like I
knew nothing, right?
So now?
Now I'm pretty motivated, soI'm going to work on this work
on this, okay.
Speaker 1 (55:35):
Well, you heard it
here, folks, it is recorded, so
now it's physically intranscribed, so we have no
reason why todd can be like Ican't back out of this, so all
good there, okay.
So, amy, you obviously flewthrough all your testing.
You know license upgrades, doug, how did you get into this when
you're just like, do I have tolike, keep my wife out of this
weird cult kind of thing, or wasit like I had actually used him
(55:58):
?
Speaker 7 (56:05):
well, traveling.
Traveling driving truckcross-country, oh no way, cool,
okay.
And it just kind of bleeds overinto the ham radio because the
swr and everything is about thesame type of stuff nice, okay.
Speaker 1 (56:21):
And so you, just once
she got her ticket, it was just
like, okay, what do we do withthis thing?
Or you guys just like, hey, podo seems a good fit.
You just kind of went thatroute and, and you know what,
what led you more to go down therabbit hole, as they say.
Speaker 7 (56:35):
Well, we had a friend
take us out for first
activation and that was thebeginning.
Speaker 6 (56:44):
Our.
Speaker 1 (56:44):
Elmer, that's what we
call them, right?
Yeah, elmers, that's a nice wayof saying.
Hey, jerk, thanks for helpingme spend my money.
Cool, all right.
Well, good base there.
Any of you guys want to throwin a few questions here and?
Speaker 2 (56:58):
there while we keep
going.
Well, um, yeah, go ahead, toddno, you can go, all right don't
fight over it, come on, we'reall wrong here um, so I, I
looked you guys up on qrz as theclub, right, uh, november
Charlie 4 Hotel Hotel, right, hillbilly Ham's Amateur Radio
Club.
And that's how I got Lewis'scall sign, kilo, uniform 4, golf
(57:23):
Zero.
And so that's great.
But it pushed me to Facebook.
I don't use Facebook, alright, the book of faces is not a thing
for me but it is vocabulary, but hold on.
So, number one, please note thatbecoming a member of this
(57:46):
Facebook group is merely forcontent and information sharing
and reference to the club'sparticipation and activities
involving amateur radio.
Club membership is notcurrently open to accepting new
members.
However, it will be evaluatedand updated in the future.
Thank you, daykeeping already, wow, I want to be a member.
Speaker 1 (58:07):
I've got overalls.
I want to be a member.
We're all set up here, myfriends, we're all ready.
What do we have to do?
What hoops of fire do with Pauland I and Todd?
Speaker 4 (58:20):
I my friends are all
ready.
What do we have to do?
What hoops of fire do with pauland I and todd I'll have to
jump through, we'll go ahead andwe'll have a vote making
honorary members.
I'm not wonderful, you know.
Um, we basically started outwith the five of us as the
founding members and, of course, going back, we don't want just
anybody in particular joiningthat you know it's just gonna
sit there and think we're justdoing nets every week.
And we want people that areactive out into the communities
(58:40):
or their respective areas, actively participating in Helm
Radio, and not just digital modeor one set thing.
It needs to be somebody that'sreally wanting to be active with
us.
So, and having fun is the bigthing for us Getting out and
enjoying it and having fun, which we really do, I mean, if
(59:02):
you've ever well, eric, you knowyou saw how we were with the
little incident with the mobgetting knocked over the little
VFO incident.
Speaker 1 (59:12):
Yeah, so I'm getting
knocked over the UFO incident,
yeah.
Speaker 4 (59:15):
Yeah, I mean, just
like our first activation.
There were five of us.
I was calling the TQ but I wasalso doing my call sign, our
club call sign.
There were five other operatorsto go through and we were
having a blast because at theend we'd all scream like Merry
Christmas or, you know, new year.
(59:39):
Feedback was people weregetting tickled, they enjoyed it
, they appreciated you knowsomebody going outside of just
the typical hurry up, rush, getyour contact and go on yeah,
you're just gonna have like aspecial tagline at the event,
like hillbilly out or somethinglike that, you know, you guys do
a twofer and one contact youactivated, we activated the park
(01:00:01):
, that's pretty awesome.
Speaker 5 (01:00:03):
You just gave me
three quarters of my activation,
of what I needed, you know wewere up at a twofer and one guy
was like you just made my wholeactivation, yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:00:16):
That's awesome.
Speaker 4 (01:00:17):
But you know that's
one of the things that we had
discussed when we started thegroup was that you know this
club is going to be about funfirst and foremost and enjoying
it, and we all like to cut upand razz and pick on each other
all the time and we like tobring that forward into the club
out on the radio as well.
Speaker 1 (01:00:36):
So you know, if amy
gets that, amy get on there and
starts going howdy, you know, let me girl I was so mad because
when I was actually activatingmy camera well, the main camera
that I had on like I was justkind of going through stuff and
like right, I shut it off.
I said to myself I'm gonna shutit off, and then, lo and behold
, you chime in across.
I'm like after the whole entirething, I was like damn it, I
(01:00:58):
could have had them on, like thefull video I was like, oh so
now I have sworn that I'm gonnakeep cameras running all the
time now.
Speaker 5 (01:01:05):
So and I kind of look
at it like yeah, ham radio is
great for preparedness mindedthing, but at the same time it's
kind of like firearms, where ifyou don't practice it you lose
it.
So in order to keep track, thebest way to keep practicing is
(01:01:26):
to make it fun now, shannon didallude to the fact that she does
the logging.
Speaker 1 (01:01:31):
She's doing the
logging for all you guys.
Speaker 4 (01:01:33):
I do paper logging.
When I call, I do the paperlogging and I'll write you know
as many call signs as I can getand go down through the list and
he will be on the polo app andthen he sends it to me and then
I, you know, do whatever changeswe need to do.
Speaker 1 (01:01:52):
But Amy and Doug
they'll do their own logging
while they're there and lewisdoes his own login okay, now you
guys said obviously, when youactivate all together, please
tell me you're like have abetter way than actually like
handing each other the micthrough all four people the
first time we've sat in Doug'sSuburban and there were three of
(01:02:17):
us on the middle back row and Ihad the mic and I would be like
this we were passing it off andaround and passing it off and
around.
Speaker 4 (01:02:30):
So my next question,
then, is what radio are you
using.
Speaker 1 (01:02:32):
We were using the 891
.
Okay, all right, I'm going toput in the mail tomorrow my
splitter and in a separate mic,so you guys can have two mics
and like one for the back andone for the front, and then that
way, you know, you can justhave more fun because they're
both active.
Speaker 4 (01:02:46):
But it's not.
It gets back to me.
The cord is all twisted and I'msitting here going like this.
Speaker 1 (01:02:55):
You're choking
somebody by the time you get to
the fourth contact.
Yeah, dude, you guys got torecord this stuff.
Then that's liquid gold.
Speaker 4 (01:03:00):
I mean, that's
awesome how hard it is to hold a
camera and a mic.
Speaker 1 (01:03:06):
Just put it on a dash
should be good.
We'll watch it live.
Speaker 2 (01:03:10):
We'll be happy
suction cover to the windshield.
You're yep, you got it.
That's awesome.
Speaker 3 (01:03:16):
You just get a bunch
of GoPros and stick them on your
heads.
Speaker 4 (01:03:21):
Don't give a really
high defense, because I'll be
the one that ends up having towear it.
Speaker 1 (01:03:28):
Yeah that, and you
don't be the one with the
microphone on all the time, evenafter the camera stops rolling,
because it'll captureeverything.
Speaker 5 (01:03:39):
Plus, it's kind of
fun because she's rushing trying
to get all these comments andwe'll kind of get her cutting up
in the middle of it and she'slosing her train yeah, because
people started laughing.
Speaker 1 (01:03:48):
I won't shut up, it's
just it's one of those things
then that that means, we candovetail right into Jabberjaw,
so like that must be just your, your chatty.
Kathy kind of thing.
Speaker 4 (01:03:59):
I have been known as
Jabberjaw since I was a child.
I didn't know a stranger kindof thing, but when I got into
the radio, everybody keepsthrowing the mic off to me to
start the thing.
Yeah, she's good at it.
Speaker 5 (01:04:11):
That's what I hear.
It sounds like fun, like I'mthinking about coming down just
to do an activation with you.
Speaker 1 (01:04:24):
You got a couple more
.
Speaker 3 (01:04:25):
Next time I'm in
north carolina, you might be
getting a call saying hey, I'mon my way, pick a park, I'll
meet you there park, I'll meetyou there.
Speaker 1 (01:04:41):
You got lots of our
own so uh, so kind of describe
like an average, like so yourclub.
I mean, obviously you're kindof loosely fitted in terms of
what you got.
I mean, obviously the onlything you really did was just
establish a, a board, kind ofbecause you're required to for
your call sign and the thetrustee kind of stuff, uh.
But yeah, you guys seem prettyloosely fitted.
Do you guys like try to do howmany?
Do you think you guys have agoal to kind of do X number of
potas together as a group overthe next years, like kind of
(01:05:03):
what some of that look like foryou guys?
Speaker 4 (01:05:05):
I don't think we've
set group goals yet.
I mean, we've only been set upas a group.
We got our license in November.
We did our first activation inDecember, so it's only been a
couple months.
We don't have our typicalmonthly meetings that clubs do.
We get together and go eatsomewhere and then I'll try to
(01:05:25):
take notes and I'm sitting heregoing wait a minute back up.
What did we just discuss?
Speaker 6 (01:05:30):
I don't know about
that.
Sometimes we go out and eat, ortwice.
Sometimes it depends on themonth.
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:05:39):
Here's a little
tidbit as a club that you don't
have to worry about Dump thenotes.
You don't need it.
You just need to have one setof notes at the very beginning
and then that's like it.
And the next 10 years when youhave to renew your call, sign
for the club that's when thenotes have to be updated, so you
don't have to meet at all.
Exactly, toad just doesn't evendo it either.
I mean, they're.
Speaker 4 (01:05:59):
You know they're
perfect things that we discussed
.
You know we don't want to betied down to.
You know you gotta have allthese monthly meetings and club
fees.
You know why are we paying clubfees if they're not going to
anything?
If we want to buy something forthe club that we want to use,
we kind of pool our stufftogether and do it.
Speaker 5 (01:06:16):
Nice, and usually if
we have like the brunch type
meeting, usually it's the typeof thing All right, we're
getting together for field day.
What are we going to do?
Nice?
Speaker 1 (01:06:29):
On the fly and you
guys are small enough that you
can make those adjustmentspretty quickly, versus trying to
steer a large ship yeah, yeah,we actually did our first uh.
Speaker 4 (01:06:38):
We did winter field
day this year, so there was
three stations and we did itindoors and we actually did
pretty good.
But considering the the uh, Ithink we were what first, first
or second on winter field dayfor the state and for the uh
category, of course there wereonly three other north carolina
stations.
(01:06:59):
You know in that category.
But I mean for the number ofhours that we actually were able
to put in, we didn't do the24-hour thing.
Uh, I think we did pretty well.
Speaker 5 (01:07:11):
So we enjoyed first
your last and it's about having
a good time and getting outthere and learning new stuff so
do you guys like to do anythingelse besides poda?
Speaker 1 (01:07:26):
yeah, I mean,
obviously you mentioned winter
field day.
I assume you're probably goingto do something for summer field
day.
You guys big like gettinginvolved in any contesting stuff
, or is that just something thatyou're just not interested?
Speaker 5 (01:07:36):
I just haven't there
yet.
Okay, um, we're gonna.
We could look into some of it.
I mean, I'd like to try a sodasome point this year local
couple that does a lot and maybehook up with them and go out
with them for the first timevery cool.
Speaker 1 (01:07:55):
Yeah, sodas are fun.
I mean, you guys got the hillsfor that area for sure.
You're not like arizona with, like them, the mountains are
small little bumps, yeah, whichis always a good thing.
Yeah, paul and I've been uh,working and talking, but we'll
make it, you know, definitively.
This year we got to do our 4000 footers, so, uh, yeah, we
got to hike those and make oursoda at least so yeah, that five
(01:08:18):
for me at least.
But yes, 10 would be an awesomegoal, my friend I know you're a
little bit ahead of me.
But yeah, definitely, there'sonly 48 of them, so hey sure,
let's spread it out.
Speaker 4 (01:08:26):
Show the love well,
and something else we were
looking at is doing events.
We have some uh a lot offestivals and stuff that go on
around here and in the previousclub we were uh doing a lot of
stuff with like the uh hump 22,which is regarding the veteran
suicide events, and you know wedo traffic control or not
(01:08:48):
traffic control, but help withthe, the runners and stuff going
back and forth and keeping uptaking people that stop halfway
through or whatever, into thewalk Veterans events that we do.
We haven't decided if we'regoing to participate in those.
The other club in the countyalso does that.
(01:09:10):
But we also have the fairs andstuff because we do want to
promote ham radio, you know, andget folks out, let them know
what it's about.
It's not just uh servicerelated, you know, and it's not
just a weekly net.
It's something you can get outand participate in, have fun.
You can provide services orsupport.
(01:09:30):
You know uh also skywarn.
I'm sean and I both are skywarn, um, so those different things
you know.
Speaker 5 (01:09:39):
Of course I like
doing fta, ft4 and we'll be
doing cw and maybe put someflyers out of some other clubs
around the area that might dotesting and it's like uh,
hamstudyorg where they can study, in case they want to get into
it and kind of show the fun side.
(01:09:59):
And I think one of the eventsthis year, I think Trail of
Tears, runs through it, so if weget set up there they may be
able to see the madness of thepileups and stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:10:12):
Very cool.
Now, do you guys?
You guys have 4-h down in thatarea.
Do you do any 4-h?
We?
We participate in that a lotwith our club and find that it's
like super fun to be able tojust piggyback with ham radio.
We have a guy, tim, in our clubwe've had on the show in the
past.
He's a big cw guy but he'ssimilar to kind of uh, you, sean
, where he's just like he pickedit up and wanted to do it and
(01:10:33):
he's been really good at doingit and he sets up a small little
table and teaches the kids howto do uh, their name in Morse
code and the kids eat it up.
Like it's crazy, like they'relike they got their badge and it
just says like the dot dash, dot dash on it and they're like
everyone's like all go off.
(01:10:54):
You know kind of just you knowhaving a blast.
So, yeah, it's, things like thatare really cool to do and it
sounds like you guys don't likeget tucked up in red tape that a
lot of bigger clubs do or likehave to vote on, and you just
kind of go out and do it.
So if it tickles your fancy, you just kind of go have fun
with it.
So it's um.
Speaker 3 (01:11:07):
They don't have to
deal with.
There you go.
Yeah, people want to change.
Speaker 1 (01:11:17):
I like my life the
way it is.
Speaker 3 (01:11:19):
Well, we kind of are
going to have a live free and
ham club.
If Eric could get our call sign, yeah.
I'm working on it.
He had a different call signfor like a week because he used
his frn number to do our livefree and ham call sign they can
sympathize with me.
Speaker 1 (01:11:39):
They filled in the
forms.
They know how much of a like, constant like.
If you don't pay attention towhat field you're putting it in,
you put it in the wrong fieldand you screw yourself right, so
now he's got it tattooed on hisarm.
So he's gonna say, hey, theycan't take it, it's, it's
branded on me Exactly.
Speaker 4 (01:11:56):
Yeah, it was a
challenge, because when
somebody's calling and you'retrying to fill in the paperwork
and you're like, no, go to thenext line, go to the next line.
Speaker 1 (01:12:04):
Yeah, oh wow, I
haven't gone that far yet.
I have to go back and refillthat.
Speaker 5 (01:12:13):
My alarm goes off at
three in the morning.
Like some of the clubs just runso late, it's like I gotta
leave before the presentationright, yeah now do you guys like
amy and doug?
Speaker 3 (01:12:26):
do you guys belong to
another club, or is it?
This is just the club that youguys are with yeah, this is just
it now did you used to belongto another club?
Speaker 6 (01:12:35):
yeah, we all belong
to the same club oh, now you
just do this one, yeah yes, nowdo you guys have a good
relationship with that otherclub?
Speaker 4 (01:12:43):
we can have a talking
relationship with them.
Speaker 1 (01:12:45):
Yeah, have you found
any members go?
Can I join your club?
Speaker 4 (01:12:51):
well, when we laughed
a lot of people were like we
didn't know you were doing thisand I was like, well, you know,
that's kind of the point.
We were doing this as our groupuh, not to, you know, make waves
or anything, but we want we'regoing a different direction than
they were and we just felt likeyou know, it goes back to how
(01:13:12):
we've got our rules set.
Now we just if you're not goingto be an active radio person
doing things, you know, we kindof wanted to be able to just say
, hey, look, we're not acceptingyet for applications, let us
get out of the new setupourselves.
But you know, I still talk tothe previous president of the
(01:13:33):
club and we ran into a couple ofthe members over the weekend
while we were getting food.
You know, I still talk to theprevious president of the club
and we ran into a couple of themembers over the weekend while
we were getting food, you know, and discussing field day and
stuff.
So it's still OK.
It's just they were a littleupset.
They said that some of theirbest operators were, you know,
taking off and leaving them andI thought, no, we're just doing
our own thing, you know you'renot alone.
Speaker 1 (01:13:53):
So, like our
experience is the same up here
in new England.
You know we very much like youcome into a club and you're like
, very much like you guys, you're super excited, you want
to play ham radio, like that'swhy I joined a radio club to
play radio.
Come on, I don't want to behaving coffee every Wednesday
morning in my Danish and then goto a barn on a Saturday and
just talk about the good olddays or wait to field day to
(01:14:16):
play.
I mean you want to get outthere and you want to play radio
.
And so I totally get where youguys are at.
And you know I, I know from II'm the, the bull in the China
closet in our club.
I can't tell you.
You know everyone looks at meand like doing another thing in
this club because they want tolike I want to go play podo, I
want to go do a podo meetup.
I want to do winterfield day.
You know I'm just draggingpeople in and we're all having
(01:14:37):
fun.
I'm pronounced to thosenaysayers of the people that are
like oh well, you know weshouldn't do that.
We're not a club.
So I applaud you guys and it'seven better to hear that you
guys still have a goodrelationship with that other
club and and hopefully they canlearn something from you guys
and see that you know.
Hey, you just don't have to bethe board or the business side
of the club.
You should be doing what thehobby really means is ham radio.
Speaker 3 (01:14:57):
Yeah, yeah, like our
club is.
I would say our club is kind ofI don't know what the
percentage is, but there's likethe active members and then
there's the active activemembers who are actually
actively wanting to do ham radio, doing poda, trying new things,
getting involved with field dayOn the repeater.
(01:15:19):
We have a club repeater andthere's a bunch of people that
use it all the time.
Then there's half the club thatdoesn't even probably know what
the repeater is even up andrunning, which is fine.
I'm not against having people inthere, but Eric and Paul and I
and some of the other guys, youknow we feel like you join a ham
radio club.
You know it's your hobby, youwant to do ham radio.
(01:15:40):
So you know, I think it'sawesome what you guys have done
and you know it's it's kind oflike it makes me kind of jealous
, like that sounds like a greatgroup to be in.
That's why I said I'm not lying, I'm going to come down to
North Carolina and you might geta strange call and say, hey,
I'm about 45 minutes away.
Speaker 4 (01:15:59):
Pick it.
Can you guys meet me for anactivation?
Let's go.
Speaker 3 (01:16:01):
Because that's what
that's where the fun's at, you
know, when we all get togetherand and we play in.
Our club has done what do theycall them?
Pota?
Yeah, pota meetups, potameetups.
And we'll advertise it, justlike on the, you know, through
our email group, but we'll do iton the repeater and stuff, and
we pick a park and a day and setup some stations and invite
(01:16:22):
people who've never done it,invite people that want to do it
, and even get a lot of peoplewho don't even know what ham
radio is and like, oh, what areyou guys doing?
And try to get more peopleinvolved.
So I think it's really awesome.
You know that you guys got to.
You know the five of you havethe same passion and just said
we're doing a club, let's getthis going.
So it's awesome.
Speaker 5 (01:16:41):
I think it helps too
that we all kind of like hanging
out anyhow, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:16:47):
Well, it's definitely
important to have people you
like working ham radio with.
Yeah, I working ham radio withyou.
Speaker 3 (01:16:51):
I'd hate to have
someone who's a jerk next to me
and there's and there's, andthere's no polit.
I mean, there's no politics ordrama like you know, like you're
like oh, what are you gonna dofor him?
Speaker 5 (01:16:59):
let's go get
something to eat, talk about it
and for me the thing is kind ofnice because I enjoy ham radio
and learning and everything else.
But I'm not a rag chewer by anymeans.
I'm not a big conversationalist.
Speaker 3 (01:17:14):
So you're not like
your wife there, shannon, there
right Exactly.
Speaker 4 (01:17:24):
He always tells me
I'm the social butterfly and I
go anywhere I don't know astranger and I'm like I don't
know what you're talking about.
Speaker 3 (01:17:32):
If we ever work each
other on the air.
It might be a disaster becausewe might be talking on the radio
for a long time.
Speaker 1 (01:17:39):
That's right.
Todd is activating and it'slike he's making last call.
You've got him for the next 45minutes to an hour.
Speaker 2 (01:17:45):
No problem.
Speaker 5 (01:17:46):
I'm going to put it
down.
Speaker 3 (01:17:49):
Eric likes to shut it
down and I'm like I still hear
people they want to work us.
Look to this shut it down, andI'm like I still hear people
they want to work us.
Speaker 1 (01:17:56):
you know you got to
go.
Look to this guy over here.
You know he's.
He's the same way.
He's like radio off, sorry,yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:18:07):
That happened this
past weekend.
I kept saying, well, I'm goingto take last call, and then I'd
have five or six and I'd bewriting them down.
So I was like we got to go andI'm like wait a minute, you know
.
And then some guy actually comeon there and said are you ever
going to leave this frequency?
Speaker 3 (01:18:21):
And I'm like wow,
that takes some balls Now, doug
and Amy, do you, do you guysever go out and do like a poda
just together, like you sometime or whatever?
Speaker 6 (01:18:34):
it's been a while,
yeah, but you have done it.
Speaker 3 (01:18:36):
Right now I'm just
gonna guess who's calling out
first?
Amy right actually you and Iwas me actually we have both
done it yeah, well, I'm just thereason I say this is like eric
cheats and what he does is hehas his daughter and he I don't
(01:18:57):
hear anything.
Speaker 1 (01:18:58):
Tom, what are you
talking about?
Speaker 3 (01:18:58):
you can talk all you
want he gets her and they're
like, hey, where's the yl?
He goes oh, that was mydaughter, that's just a
recording.
So he snags all these peoplewho are just looking for the
women to respond to it's mybreak glass when the bands suck.
Speaker 1 (01:19:13):
Sorry, my daughter
recorded it.
She's got the she.
I got her permission.
I can use it anytime I wantyeah well, how about your family
members become hams there?
Todd, my daughter did.
Yeah, I'm trying.
Speaker 3 (01:19:25):
I mean I'm only.
I mean I have my, my 12 yearold.
You know he's kind ofinterested.
He reminds me every night whenthe net is, that's for sure.
But uh, and he knows I do thepodcast.
So I don't know, maybe when hegets older, but he's more
focused in his uh, friends andbaseball right now.
So ham radio is on the side, but he'll get there, lewis.
Speaker 4 (01:19:47):
Actually, at the last
activation, the one where we
got Eric, he had me to recordmyself on his radio, his new, uh
new radio, so that he could hitit and go back and forth, and
I'm like wait a minute.
Speaker 3 (01:20:02):
Well, I took him.
I took my son, zach, to anactivation with Paul and we went
to his favorite spot and youknow, with the pond there he
just went fishing.
So he was happy he was fishing, paul and I were working the the
radio and so I I will take him, especially if I like I've taken
him before.
I said, hey, you want to gofishing, I'm going to go
activate, because I found a lakewith a park and he's all for it
(01:20:24):
.
He loves to fish.
So he's like, yeah, let's go.
Speaker 1 (01:20:27):
So so anything, what
guys gonna say you got any
questions, go ahead and jump in,but yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:20:37):
I'm enjoying the show
.
I know you are.
Speaker 1 (01:20:39):
That's the point.
You know, you've been livestreaming all weekend, so this
is like, oh cool, my voice cancalm down a little bit.
I can sit back and watch thefun.
Speaker 2 (01:20:49):
I'm just being like
Doug and I'm just, I'm just
taking it all in and enjoying it, alright well, I've got a
couple questions.
Speaker 1 (01:20:56):
Todd, you got a few
more.
I didn't want to cut you offthere, sorry no, no go ahead.
Okay, so we had the poter powerand ham radio do a couples on,
and I always ask the questionsfor you guys because I obviously
you guys are couples and you'reboth the license whatnot.
Who?
Who from Shannon and Sean?
Who is the the radio hoarder?
Who likes to have to have thenew gear?
(01:21:17):
Who likes to tinker with thestuff?
Speaker 5 (01:21:20):
Show.
Hoard the mic, but I'm the onelooking at the new gear.
Speaker 4 (01:21:23):
He is when something
hits that I see that sparks my
interest.
I'm like, oh, that's what Iwant.
Speaker 5 (01:21:33):
But, like in the
beginning, we had the DX-10 at
home that's the base station andshe got hooked on hunting poda
and then she was like, oh, wegot to get out there and
activate.
We got to get out there andactivate, and then she spotted a
used 891 being sold and she'slike is this a good deal Is this
a good deal, and I'm thinkingto myself all right, if it's my
(01:21:56):
idea, she's going to blame me.
So well, it's a good deal.
We really shouldn't be spendingthe money.
Speaker 3 (01:22:06):
But if you think we
should get it, we should get it.
Speaker 1 (01:22:08):
Smart man Sean, Very
smart man okay, all right, so
only amy and doug.
Uh, which one of you?
Guys is the radio hoarder lover, you know technology and stuff,
or say more you, yeah, yeah, okay.
So so are you the one alwaysrecommending the hey, we should
(01:22:29):
get this?
Or is it just amy comes to youand says the same thing like uh?
and he doesn't really say toomuch about it no, okay, he says,
and I'm like okay, whateverit's not good to me, man, no
problem, okay, all right, uh alot uh question, obviously,
anniversaries, radio or flowers, obviously for the ladies if
(01:22:53):
it's like the gun so we're gonnahave some radios coming in here
okay, cool, amy.
Radios are flowers anniversary.
I don't know.
Okay, doug, which one have yougotten her in the past?
Okay, all right.
(01:23:16):
So next year is the radioanniversary.
You know it is.
However, whatever year it is,it's always the radio
anniversary, so just keep thatin mind you can use exactly cool
, all right.
So so when you guys go out andactivate, I'm just curious, kind
of like are you on your averagesetups, you know, when you're
(01:23:36):
setting up the park, you guys, you know, usually plan for a
couple hours to go out and doactivations.
Are you just like, hey, we'rejust gonna do a quick activation
, you know?
Do you find it just varies allthe time when you guys decide to
get together or shannon's neverquick, shannon takes all day
long.
Speaker 4 (01:23:54):
I won't if I go.
I don't want to do a quickactivation.
I feel like I I would take thattime and energy to drive here,
put, put the equipment up andset the radio.
I want to be there and get asmuch out of the day as I can.
So you know 10 or 12 contactsand somebody's ready to go.
I'm like no, just leave me here, I'll stay.
I want the longer adventurethroughout the day.
Speaker 1 (01:24:18):
Okay.
Speaker 5 (01:24:19):
And it's kind of nice
on Saturdays and stuff, when
your wife comes out and she'slike all right, where are we
going today?
Speaker 1 (01:24:26):
nice, okay, so you
definitely uh.
So, shannon I want.
Speaker 3 (01:24:30):
I want you to meet my
wife and start hanging out with
her on facetime or something.
Maybe you can convince her.
Because she, she's like nope,I'm like yeah, you want to go
with me to do ham radio.
Speaker 4 (01:24:42):
She's like I'd rather
watch paint dry that was one of
the things I, you know I alwayswant to try to find something
that we can both enjoy and dotogether, and we have done many
different things over the lastcouple years, trying to, you
know, find something that weboth like and lo and behold
(01:25:04):
something I never thought Iwould get into is one of the
things that I enjoy the most.
I get more joy out of this andtime that we get to spend
together, but we both enjoy it.
So I hear that a lot on theradio from me.
It'll be some of the folks arecalling in.
I wish you'd talk to my wife.
I really enjoy hearing you bothout there.
The folks are calling in.
I wish you talked to my wife.
I really enjoy hearing you guysout there.
Speaker 1 (01:25:24):
I wish you know so,
and so I'm like, well, just hook
them up with me and we'll,we'll talk yeah, you, yeah, the
yls need to form the supportgroup, you know, in general,
because like we hear the samething from the poter power a
couple, uh, you know, uh, julieand and von over there, they the
same way, they like she's likeI just wanted to go to the parks
to, like you know, enjoy thepark nature, and then he started
doing this radio thing and Iwas like all right, sure I'll do
(01:25:44):
it, and so, you know, just kindof took off from there.
It sounds similar to the sameyou know experience, like hey, I
just enjoy doing it and havingfun.
Speaker 3 (01:25:55):
Well, I get the
comments like, I'm like, pick up
the phone and call Australia.
I'm like, really, Do you knowanyone in Australia?
Go for it, you know.
I say cause I actually metsomeone today from Australia and
I know his first name.
Yeah, so I mean, it's it's.
She's all good, she's verysupportive of of what I do,
she's supportive of the podcastand stuff.
But uh, yeah, I do sometimesget a little jealous when I see
(01:26:17):
couples going out there anddoing stuff.
I think that would be awesome.
But who knows, maybe in our, inour old age, before we retire,
we want to get a camper or oneof those like what do they call
them, the sprinter vans, andjust go cross country and going
to go activate parks andhopefully maybe she'll just be
so bored She'll just have to sitdown and join me and maybe
(01:26:38):
that'll get her into it.
Show you how to do it the rightway.
Yeah, I'll have her call CQ.
Speaker 5 (01:26:45):
One thing that might
work if you tell her she
probably couldn't pass the test.
They love to prove you wrong.
Oh, that's a good idea, thereyou go.
Speaker 3 (01:26:52):
Todd, yeah, I bet you
couldn't pass the test.
She's very she's.
She just, uh, she did online.
She just got her her collegedegree.
She did it online, um, throughSouthern New Hampshire
university, and she was like shegot everything a hundred, like
she was like adamant and onetime the computer didn't send
the form and she was like a daylike she sent it on time but it
(01:27:15):
didn't get to where it wassupposed to go and she thought
she was going to like losepoints and break her record.
I'm like you're such a geek.
I'm like it's just just get thefricking piece of paper, Like I
did, like you, you knoweverything's got to be perfect.
So, yeah, I'm afraid to do that, cause she'll probably get her
extra before me Hopefully not.
Speaker 6 (01:27:34):
Don't put it past her
she probably would.
Speaker 1 (01:27:42):
We we might have to
if you don't get your extra soon
.
Yeah, just as an incentive.
Yeah cool.
Speaker 5 (01:27:45):
I think the thing
that kind of hooked shannon was
when she started hunting and satthere on the porch and started
reaching all these people.
We gotta get an hf radio.
I know I'm waiting on a check.
I know the exact video I want.
Very cool.
Speaker 1 (01:28:02):
Yeah, that is always
the challenge there and so you
know, especially setting up,like you know, your home station
versus your post station, I'msure it's two different things
and two different configurationsand you know, probably very
much an awesome experienceeither way.
Whether you're at home, I'msure it's very like Shannon's
probably, like do I sit and dowork or do I play radio?
Speaker 4 (01:28:23):
I'm home all day
anyway, and then Lewis will call
me and goes like so-and-so ison the radio and I'm like I
really got to get up out of therecliner to go and turn the
radio on.
Speaker 1 (01:28:34):
You need to get a
flex and you can do it from your
iPad.
Speaker 5 (01:28:38):
And then there's
other days where I'll call home
at lunch and, uh, she'll answerthe phone.
Hold on one sec.
You are one, we my yankee.
You're five.
Speaker 3 (01:28:46):
Nine in november,
charlie, oh that's funny the
chicken's burden does amy, doyou have um?
Do you use an 891 too?
We have one, but no, I have the7300 at home the base station
and you take the 891 out to doPOTA.
Speaker 7 (01:29:08):
Yeah, you will
actually fit in the motorcycle
saddlebag, oh nice.
Speaker 1 (01:29:14):
And have you guys
ever done mobile on the HF,
mobile on the motorcycle at all?
No, we just we have.
Rob N1NUG out of Connecticut, agood friend of ours.
He does actually HF mobile onhis touring bike, and so he's
done a couple of videos on it,so pretty cool.
(01:29:35):
I don't think I can handle bothat the same time, but hey, he
does it pretty well, don't thinkI can handle both at the same
time, you know.
Speaker 2 (01:29:41):
But you know, hey, he
does it pretty well.
So, yeah, there's a, there's aguy in flag and torch that um he
, he's got an 891 in thesaddlebag of his touring bike
and he's got the, the atas on aon a like low luggage rack, um,
you know, in the back seat.
It works, it works.
He gets to just go and, and youknow, do a little off-roading
on his, on his motorcycle, andjust activate right there.
(01:30:02):
That's awesome.
Speaker 1 (01:30:05):
So I'm going to
consider doug now, do you guys
like to?
Uh, just only do side bend whenyou're out activating poter?
You guys do any digital oranything.
I mean, obviously you'reworking on cw, but no digital no
, no digital yet.
Speaker 4 (01:30:19):
But I know that he
was working on making sure stuff
was configured for the 891,because or not, well, maybe the
891, right where you're talkingabout getting configured.
But, um, if we go outactivating, I'm not gonna go and
sit there and while he's doingcw I want my own radio set up,
and you know, so I can be going.
I've got to be productive.
Speaker 5 (01:30:40):
That's why I'm hoping
that by the time I get the CW
down, maybe I can have a QRPradio and some passband filters
and we can be working side byside.
I'll be doing CW, she can bedoing sideband or whatever Get
yourself a nice triplexer andthen run off the same antenna.
Speaker 4 (01:30:58):
Good deal, it's the
goals, those that, do ham radio
couples stay together?
I had to ask.
So, uh, lewis is always, uh,he's always buying stuff, always
looking on dx, uh, the web, dxwebsite and all these other
(01:31:19):
things.
And I told him.
I said you know, I wonder howmany couples actually get
divorced because of ham radio?
I can't imagine it.
That's all we got to do is spin, spin, spin.
Speaker 3 (01:31:30):
Now is he married.
Speaker 4 (01:31:32):
He is not.
Speaker 3 (01:31:33):
Oh, he's not, he's
okay.
Speaker 4 (01:31:35):
Yeah he's okay, yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:31:39):
If he gets married
and she becomes a ham, does she
get to be able to join?
Would that be an okay?
Speaker 4 (01:31:48):
thing for the club it
would have to be.
If he can keep up with hisbuying habits, we'd be all right
.
Speaker 3 (01:31:58):
Well, maybe he needs
to marry someone with, uh, some
money, some money in her accountto support his hobby yeah,
support that would help you guysout it might even come down to
the club making the decision whohe gets to marry.
Speaker 4 (01:32:11):
So it's sort of like
you know we don't approve she
doesn't have her extra yeah, they gotta be ham to get in
there so I got questions.
Speaker 1 (01:32:25):
So I kind of wanted
to, you know, kind of spin this
back to the the club side ofthings and and kind of, uh, you
know, bring it back to that alittle bit.
So if you guys obviouslystarted your club and you got
things going, if someone waslistening to the show right now
and they're like, hey, you know,I really have the same desire
to want to just get out and doit.
You know any bit of advice youcould kind of give them to.
You know kind of, just get outthere.
(01:32:46):
Or you know how you guys kindof put your you know things in
motion.
You know you could share withsomebody keep it fun.
Speaker 5 (01:32:53):
I mean, one thing I
did is I I sent a message out to
the black swamp group and askedthem for suggestions, uh,
things to avoid and stuff, andthey sent a nice thing back and
they're like just kind of, doyour own thing, don't let other
people discourage you.
Um, they try and down it andeverything else and um keep
(01:33:16):
constantly trying to work ongoals, work on things together
as a club.
So we I think that's one of thereasons why we don't mind
starting small, with just a fewpeople kind of figure out how
things are going as we go, so wedon't love them up along the
way.
Speaker 4 (01:33:36):
Yeah, and you know,
when people reach out, ask
questions about you know, I hadone lady that's joined the
Facebook group.
Actually, several have joinedthe Facebook group, you know.
You know, as long as we canencourage them or answer
questions, that are hurdles thatwe've been through thus far,
you know, and that, like yousaid, Black Swamp, we reached
(01:33:58):
out to them.
Other clubs are supporting eachother, especially if we get out
and do an activation, and I'lluse Black Swamp as an example.
They get out, they'll hunt usas much as they can.
They also help promote us onFacebook.
We're hunting them, they'rehunting us.
Just different things where theclubs like that that are
(01:34:19):
starting up are supporting otherclubs and not trying to take
away from so it's kind of likeyou, youtube is all the channels
kind of help promote each otheryeah, totally yeah, I.
Speaker 1 (01:34:32):
I think the only one
thing missing for like clubs
like yourself is that unless youhave like an established
presence somewhere else andyou're not an affiliated arl
club, you kind of get lost perse in the in the shuffle.
I know, like trying to like, aspaul said, the book of faces
I'm not on facebook either, soit's, in essence, trying to find
you guys was a littlechallenging and I'm sure you're
probably in the same boat assomething like the backs of all
(01:34:53):
the black swamp guys, I thinkhave a website and stuff like
that.
But, um, it's definitely achallenge because obviously you
know you don't want to go toofar into the business world to
establish yourself, but you wantto be able to at least have
people find you and, as youprobably have learned and it
sounds like it's definitelyhappening for you word of mouth
seems to be the place where it'sat right.
Like you know, people are, youknow, latching onto it because
they're seeing stuff happen.
Speaker 4 (01:35:15):
Well, and that's
another thing that I covered
with the last group as PIO there, that I covered with the last
group as PIO there gettingacknowledgement of our club
recognition.
I reached out to localrepresentatives and got us
recognized with proclamationsthat you know I'll put in the
local paper or put it on socialmedia and thank those
(01:35:35):
individuals and those folks.
I did it last year for theother club.
I already have four out of thefive that I've requested from
our state officials and localofficials, you know so they
discuss it amongst others andthen you know it'll go out that
way and, like I said, localpaper will put stuff out.
You know I'll write an articleand put it in the paper or
(01:35:56):
something like that.
Speaker 1 (01:35:59):
It's actually good
suggestions there for sure,
especially if you're just tryingto get the word out there.
Obviously, you don't have touse the Big Behemoth ARL to get
yourself promoted because, toput it this way, in my opinion
ARL clubs, affiliate clubs, areno better than clubs that aren't
affiliated.
In fact, I find a lot of theclubs that aren't affiliated
have a lot better than a lot ofthem, clubs that aren't
(01:36:21):
affiliated with, a hell of a lotbetter than you know a lot of
them that are.
So you know, is our, is ourclub affiliated?
yeah, yes, yep, yep, whichdoesn't really mean a whole lot
in the world of air I didn'teven know you're sending them
money it used to mean somethingabout 25 30 years ago, when you
know that was the only way youcould get recognized by you know
, anybody in general as a clubin the local area.
(01:36:41):
But today that doesn't slice itanymore, and nine times out of
ten it's just bureaucracy thatgets in the way of having fun.
And so you guys definitely havegot that down, and that's
awesome to see, and it justwarms my heart to see that you
guys are just out there doingthe stuff that we love to do
here.
I know I'm going to be lookingfor you guys when are just out
there doing the stuff that welove to do here.
Speaker 3 (01:37:01):
I know I can't.
I'm going to be looking for youguys when I'm out there.
Speaker 1 (01:37:03):
You don't have my own
hammer alert yet.
I had him on him.
Speaker 4 (01:37:06):
You're going on
hammer alert, so I'll definitely
uh, that's definitely, I'mworking on our stickers and our
uh logo stuff.
Doug was helping me with it, Um, helping me with it.
Um, we're hopefully get some ofthose printed and, uh, some of
the other goodies that I'mthinking in the back of my mind
that we'd like to get.
So we'll send you some of those, Uh, even if you need us to
(01:37:28):
slip us some money.
Speaker 1 (01:37:28):
Let us know.
We will happily buy a bunch ofthem because, dude, we we love,
you know, the official overalls, you know we love the whole logo
.
You guys just have like it downit like dude, I would like.
That's the first thing paulsays, like dude, where do I get
those overalls that, like he'slike, I'll pay for them, I don't
care like, I just want to bepart of that club because that's
how cool it was I'm trying toget a patch for us to be able to
(01:37:51):
put on the back big enough onthe back of our overalls.
Speaker 4 (01:37:54):
That'll have the
round one that I sent you with
the old man with a rifle and themoon child, dude, fog horde,
laying horde.
Speaker 5 (01:38:03):
Whatever his name was
, I figure in summertime, I'll
turn the overalls into cut-offshorts and wear the work boots
16 inches lower of the crotch, not like you know.
Speaker 1 (01:38:17):
No, daisy Dukes,
that's all.
No, no, he's so sorry, yeah, no, we don't want Lou.
Oh, sean, no, izzo's story.
Yeah, true, very true, Itotally forgot about that.
Yeah, the 1970s, you knowIzzo's story.
Speaker 3 (01:38:29):
So what is Louie's
call sign?
Speaker 4 (01:38:32):
Louie's is Kilo
Uniform 4 Golf Zulu.
Speaker 3 (01:38:37):
Kilo Uniform 4 Golf
Zulu.
And it's Lewis Got it, is he?
Speaker 1 (01:38:41):
4 or 5?
4.
4.
4.
Speaker 3 (01:38:47):
So, Shannon, how come
you're?
Speaker 2 (01:38:49):
a 1?
.
I announced it earlier.
Speaker 3 (01:38:51):
I'm sorry.
Why is your call sign a 1?
Speaker 4 (01:38:55):
Well, this is my 1, 2
, my third vanity call and when
I was calling out my original, Iwas always having a hard time
of getting people to understandmy call sign, which was Whiskey
Bravo for Lima, charlie.
And I just kept going.
(01:39:15):
I was like I love the call sign, but I'm not getting out
without having to.
Actually, my Elmer told me Ineeded something smaller.
So I went and looked and theonly thing that was available
with a shorter call was the Kilo1 Lima Yankee and I was like,
okay, this is great.
So as soon as I get this, everybody starts calling me Kili
, but with the one call sign itthrows them off and I said, well
(01:39:40):
, that's all right, he's from upnorth, north and I'm down South
.
We just kind of blended therewith our regions.
Speaker 3 (01:39:46):
Yeah, they must hear
your, your accent and be like
there's no way.
Speaker 4 (01:39:51):
I don't have an
accent.
Speaker 3 (01:39:55):
My wife is from
Somerville, which is like right
next to Boston, and her accentis it was so bad that my
youngest son needed to go tospeech therapy because he
wouldn't.
He couldn't say r.
Like I'm not joking, you knowso she's like and and I don't
hear it anymore but like whenpeople you know from other
places here, they're like, wow, she's got a thick accent.
(01:40:17):
I'm like she does.
But when I first started datingher I used to I'm like, wow,
she's got some thick bostonroots, it's healthy.
Speaker 5 (01:40:23):
It's like I'll say
garlic and she'll be like it's
garlic and I'm like no, no, no,listen, I talk to italians in
the north end.
Speaker 1 (01:40:31):
It's garlic yeah,
it's hot, it's harvard yard you
know, you can't go anywhere
Speaker 4 (01:40:36):
without the harvard
at the harbor and they always
have to pick on me because I saythings with the slang that I've
always done.
But one of the words that oneof the guys from New York that
moved down he had a fit when heheard me say it the first time
it's rert, r-u-n-r-t, it'sruined, but it's rert.
Why did you say that?
(01:40:58):
Again it's ruined, it's ruinedbut it's run, run, r-u-r-n-t run
run, run, run, run run run ohmy god first time I heard that I
was like what I'm like?
Speaker 5 (01:41:20):
do you mean ruined?
She's like shut up.
Speaker 1 (01:41:27):
All I have to say is
anybody from down South?
I've learned the one thing Ifyou ever hear, bless your heart.
After that just stop theconversation.
They're flipping you the birdnext door.
They're going to clock you.
It's simple as that, yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:41:41):
All good stuff.
Well, I've heard, I've noticedwhen I've been down in North
Carolina, that there's a lot ofpeople coming down from New
England moving down to NorthCarolina.
It's almost like I met when wewere down every year on my
wife's family.
We get together and we gosomeplace different and we meet
up with the family.
So we've kind of we't out offlorida.
Last year we were in northcarolina and I met like a ton of
(01:42:04):
people just for the week wewere there that were, you know,
had moved down there permanently, but they're all from like mass
connecticut.
You know.
One guy was from vermont andthey've all kind of like
relocated.
So it's kind of like it's likeit's kind of like new england's
like moving down south to getaway from the weather and just
enjoy some of the nicer stuff.
Speaker 4 (01:42:24):
We have a lot.
It used to be an influx ofFloridians here, and now it's
become a lot of the New Jersey, new York those type of folks
Just in our little area here.
I used to aggravate him beforehe moved down here.
I said you know, we only wereso rural, it's two hours to get
anywhere to civil.
I used to say two hours fromcivilization, it was two hours
(01:42:47):
to anywhere outside of our areawhere you could shop or eat
something decent.
And, um he, our, our littletown, has grown from like 14,000
up to almost 31,000 in lessthan five years.
So I mean boom and a lot ofthat's because the casino moved
(01:43:11):
in, created a second locationhere, so we've got a casino.
Speaker 5 (01:43:17):
And coming down here
too, she was telling me oh, it's
a real small town.
I don't know if you'd like it.
I get down here, I see Lowe'sand Walmart.
I'm like you ought to seeGilmington when my folks are.
It's not a traffic light.
Speaker 1 (01:43:32):
They have traffic
circles in Gilmington.
Do you know what those are?
Speaker 4 (01:43:37):
Unfortunately now we
do because they're putting a
roundabout back in the center ofour town, which we had two
before and they decided to takethem now for a reason.
Now we got another oneroundabouts are in england.
Speaker 5 (01:43:49):
We have traffic
circles here in new hampshire,
yeah, I'm not sure I know inmass they used to call them
rotaries, a lot rotariesariesyes, rotary or the bubbler, yeah
.
Speaker 3 (01:44:02):
Right.
People are like what?
Like if they're not from NewEngland.
Like what'd you just sayExactly?
Speaker 1 (01:44:08):
Get your hoagie Cool.
So any of you guys got any morequestions?
I got a couple of the wrapthings up here a little bit, but
you could, paul, no, nope, good, okay, all right, well, so I
got one big one.
So you know, obviously weappreciate you guys sharing
everything about the hillbillyhammock club.
It's totally awesome to seewhere you guys are at, and so
(01:44:28):
I'm totally psyched andhopefully, fingers crossed, we
might be honorary members.
You never know.
You know just slide I'll makethe motion now.
Okay, very cool, that's all weneed, right, unanimous vote,
absolutely so.
What's in store for you guysfor 2025?
What, what things are you guysgot kind of planned or you want
(01:44:51):
to get kind of uh going and areyou see any, you know, new
members, uh, on the horizon, obviously outside of us, but you
know well, I think that a lotof us are just we're working on
getting the name out there, getting our all of our logistics
and stuff set up.
Speaker 4 (01:45:11):
I mean, we've got the
facebook play page.
I want to start a regular page, you know, eventually, but it's
just, it's time consuming andall of them work except for
lewis and I, so it's between himand I doing a lot of the other
stuff while they're actually outworking.
But, um, I see that we're Iwe're going to be doing some
(01:45:32):
events coming up that we'll justget out and promote helm radio,
doing a lot of our own justactive clubations.
We try to go as much as we can.
Sean and I go every weekend, atleast Saturday, both Saturday
and Sunday if we can, and dragthose two along, amy and Doug
and Louis.
If it's cold weather and we'reall having to pile into a
(01:45:53):
vehicle, then obviously that'sdifficult.
I don't know Anything else yougot on your mind.
Speaker 5 (01:46:01):
We want to try and
get some, maybe some techs from
the area and get them out andkind of see the fun side of the
party the ham radio, see thepoda and you know just kind of a
lot.
I think a lot of people kind ofyou know they might get their
technician and get an HT andthen kind of put it on the back
(01:46:22):
burner because that's all they.
So it's like you try and showthem maybe a little of the
contesting and some of the funactivities and some of the
camaraderie.
Speaker 1 (01:46:36):
Yep, yeah, that's the
good part about ham radio.
Yep, yeah, that's the good partabout ham radio.
Speaker 3 (01:46:44):
And and you'll never,
ever run dry of any ham radio
operators ever going hey, youknow, I've got this over here,
this is my antenna, or you know, you know I, I always said that
like if everyone was a ham radiooperator, I said there'd be
peace on earth because everyoneI've met, in any country or
whatever, everyone's good andjust glad.
They made a contact andeverything.
But you know, I mean I actually, before the Ukraine war started
(01:47:04):
, I was on a QSO with someonefrom Russia and Ukraine and me
and we were just talking about, like because it was about to
happen and they were like youknow, it's just silly, it's like
you attacking Canada, likethey're our cousins, our
brothers, you know we marry eachother and, um, you know, it was
just kind of it made me thinkabout, you know, everyone I've
ever talked to on ham radio Well, I shouldn't say everyone,
(01:47:27):
because I have had some peoplekind of be rude and not okay,
but most of the people, anyoneon POTA I can say, has always
been super friendly, justawesome.
Like you know, thanks formaking the contact.
I appreciate you being outthere.
Uh, good luck to you, that kindof stuff.
And, um, you know, it's just,it's just a good feeling and it
feels like you.
Speaker 5 (01:47:47):
You know you, even
though you've never met him in
person, you got a connectionwith him and, uh, you know, you
hope to work him again and ifyou do, it's kind of cool like,
hey, I worked you last year, soand we'll get uh, lots of times
when we do an activation, we'llkind of try and put it out on
facebook and we'll get peoplecommenting back that, uh, uh,
(01:48:09):
we've gotten the logs and stuffand it's kind of nice to see all
the repeat people you get overand over yeah, yeah, it is
pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (01:48:18):
I worked my first um
europe contact.
I worked a guy in lithuania.
It was my first contact, youknow, overseas, you know outside
the united states.
I was all excited and then, like literally the next day I
worked him again.
He goes oh, my new hampshirefriends.
So I was like all excited, likethis is awesome.
Speaker 5 (01:48:36):
This guy remembered
me this definitely helps my
geography because I'll get acountry and I'm like, wait a
minute, let me find that on themac.
Speaker 1 (01:48:44):
Yeah, yeah isn't that
what grid truckers for?
Speaker 3 (01:48:51):
well, I'm the same
way, like I I get it.
I'm like where is this?
And I'll go on like I'll lookit up on, like you know, google
maps or something, say oh, orI'll look up his call sign and
go to the map thing and say oh,that's where he is.
Speaker 5 (01:49:02):
And lots of times,
before I send out a QRZ card, a
QSO card, I'll look them up onQRZ and read their profile a
little bit and it's kind of neatto learn a little bit about
them.
Maybe try to write something todo with it.
Speaker 3 (01:49:19):
Have you guys ever
worked like a maritime mobile?
So I worked a guy on a.
He was from what was he from?
Tobago, tobago Island orsomething, but he was on a
merchant marine ship.
He was off North Carolina, offthe coast about.
He said he was about 200 milesoff the coast of North Carolina
and he was working it.
But he was about 200 miles offthe coast of north carolina and
(01:49:41):
he was working it, but he wasdoing it before his shift.
So he's like I gotta go, I go,shift time starting and he had
to, you know, leave and go.
But I just like I looked him up, I'm like mike, what?
Oh?
He was on the boat.
That makes sense.
So, yeah, he was traveling.
So I thought that was kind ofcool.
And we we have uh, uh and uh w1sand h ryan, who is part of
(01:50:03):
Liffreen Ham, who started withus in the beginning and does
stuff on the side.
He's a pilot, so he's worked us.
He's worked me a few times.
I know he's worked Eric I'm notsure if he's worked Paul, but
he'll be flying and we weredoing Eric and I did a rove and
we were on the beach and startedout and we worked them on 10
(01:50:23):
meters and he was over Sweden atlike 45,000 feet, cruising
about 750 miles an hour, talkingto us.
And that was another time hetexted me.
He says, hey, I'm on thisfrequency and I get on it.
And he told me he was like overIceland.
So I went on that airplane appwhere you can check to see where
all the planes are.
(01:50:44):
I found them.
I took a screenshot and sent itto him.
I think I find he's like yep,that's me.
So that's kind of cool, like, and you get some guys like you
know working airplanes or youknow on a boat somewhere, you
know, in the middle of theAtlanticantic.
Speaker 4 (01:51:01):
It's kind of cool,
yeah yeah, we do our little
happy dance if we're like doinga poda, and then we get somebody
like we indonesia this pastweekend, which was new for us,
and like, yeah, that was over 10000 miles away, you know yeah,
listen, you guys got to set up acamera and just kind of show
your activation and just recordit and then post it.
Speaker 5 (01:51:22):
Because I'm telling
you, if you guys the way you're
describing it, it would be wellworth watching to be so much fun
, like how to do how to do podathe hillbilly way yeah, some of
the things that happens, I meanwe've had chickens come up and
surround our car at one of thelakes.
Speaker 4 (01:51:40):
I took pictures of it
.
We were sitting there and Ikept looking out of the corner
of my eye.
I kept seeing something moving.
I was like, what is that?
I looked out and by the picnictable here comes three roosters
off of one side and two more offthe other in the car and I'm
like only us we have at the lakeside where there were no houses
anywhere.
Speaker 1 (01:52:00):
I don't know how to
get up there In miles.
Speaker 3 (01:52:03):
Yeah Well, eric and I
we did a poda activation during
the solar eclipse, which Idon't know if you guys had it
down there or not, but Paul wasup north to the full solar
eclipse.
We were like what, threequarters or pretty close, but we
get there and everything, everything's good and we're
working.
And it was weird to see how thebands were just like all of a
(01:52:25):
sudden just disappear and thencome back up.
Well, the thing that happenedto us is, you know when was that
Like in the?
It was like April or something.
Speaker 2 (01:52:33):
It was.
Speaker 3 (01:52:34):
April 8th last year
April 8th and then all of a
sudden, when the solar eclipsewent by and it started coming
back, the mosquitoes were likeout of control, attacking us
because it almost got dark andand we were normally like we'll
bring the mosquito like thing tokeep the bugs away.
We didn't think anything of itand we were like what the like
(01:52:55):
slapping them.
They're like dude, you got likefive on your neck so.
So we were like attacked by themosquitoes.
Speaker 4 (01:53:03):
That was, uh, pretty
interesting he was making fun of
me.
We were at one.
It was a twofer and we weresitting there outside we just
ate lunch.
And I said you know that we'reat.
We're at a lake.
And I said you know there'sgoing to be a bear.
Come up, just sure as the world.
You know there's scat around uson the ground.
And the next thing I know I'msitting here smacking stuff left
and right.
I know that I had to identifyat least 30 different species of
(01:53:25):
spiders that I'd never seenbefore in my life all done,
check out all right.
So I'm sitting here going.
You know I'm going to screamwith one of these on me just
sure as the world about the timeI start calling.
I'm sitting here doing this andI'm like we need to go Someone
calls 911.
That's the thing.
(01:53:45):
You'll end up getting on avideo.
I'm sure of me that or a snakewill come up at the table with
us or something.
It's going to be one of thosethings.
Speaker 3 (01:53:54):
That's funny.
Speaker 1 (01:53:57):
I had to check my
logs.
Speaker 2 (01:53:59):
I've gotten Sean and
Shannon With my current call
sign, but Amy and Doug, I gotyou guys with my old Call sign,
so we gotta Make a new contact.
I guess you're under N10G andnot KF4TPY.
Speaker 1 (01:54:19):
Although You'll never
make a contact with KF4TPY Ever
, Although you'll never make acontact with KF4TPY ever again.
So that's a little bit morehigher value.
That'd make me look it up.
Speaker 3 (01:54:33):
I looked it up.
I didn't have any of you guys.
Speaker 1 (01:54:36):
I've worked you like
five times, shannon five times,
and I probably could Sean thesame way, and I'm sure even the
club called like five times, shannon five times, and I
probably could.
Speaker 2 (01:54:43):
Sean the same way and
I'm sure even the club called a
couple times too.
Speaker 1 (01:54:47):
Yeah, crazy, you're
becoming very much like my one
guy that I keep getting everytime, bruce.
Thank you, man, I got to screwup his call again.
Speaker 2 (01:55:04):
IPL is the suffix um
yeah, because he, he got me uh
friday to india, india, papacharlie.
Speaker 1 (01:55:10):
So it's uh, oh, that,
okay.
Yeah, all right, let me, if Ifind them, I've.
He's a one that hunts me allthe time.
Uh, canine india, papa charlie.
That's, it is bruce.
I always refer to him as bruce.
So, yeah, never, never done.
Speaker 4 (01:55:24):
So yeah, you're gonna
be shannon I get quite a few
things I get caught.
They've now started noticingthe jabber jaw, so I've had that
for the last couple weeks.
Speaker 1 (01:55:34):
You know now that I
got that that's the way it's
gonna be, I can put you jabberjaws in the log and I'm never
gonna get credit for it becauseI'd be like what's jabber jaw?
Speaker 4 (01:55:43):
yeah, yeah it's gonna
.
Speaker 1 (01:55:45):
You can make t-shirts
I work jabber jaw I feel like
I'm doing, uh, you know, it's uhthe the um.
Oh man, I'm screwing movies uptoday.
I'm thinking, uh the one, uh,alice, alice in Wonderland with
the Jabberwocky, it's a shortversion.
Speaker 2 (01:56:08):
So correction on
Bruce.
So it's Kilo 9, Andy andCharlie Papa.
Speaker 1 (01:56:12):
Yeah, andy and
Charlie Papa.
Yep, bruce is a good guy, workhim often Awesome.
Well, guys, I appreciate youguys coming on tonight.
It was such a blast to have youon and I appreciate you sharing
your club, uh, the hillbillyham radio club, with uh, all of
our listeners tonight, becauseit's a perfect example of
exactly what we're trying toconvey to everybody.
(01:56:32):
It's like just get out and playthe radio, play radio, get
involved, meet other peoplelike-minded and just start doing
some fun stuff in the hobby andsee where it goes.
You know it doesn't have to bethis like, you know, uh, you
know, crazy big giant club.
It can be like five, six peoplethat just hang out on the
weekends and do some really coolstuff, um, and play ham radio,
because that's really, you know, what we try to strive here on.
(01:56:54):
Live free and ham is like stoptalking about, just go out and
do it.
That that's really what it is.
Speaker 5 (01:56:58):
If you meet someone,
just kind of invite them right
along, come on with us.
Speaker 1 (01:57:02):
Exactly, come with us
on an activation, exactly.
That's how I mean, we've sharedthose stories with Todd and
that's how I dragged Todd intoPOTA and then Paul shortly went
from serial FT8 user to sidebandguys because you know, we did
POTA.
So you, you know I love it.
I, you know, I drag my familymembers out as much as I can
when I go out and you know theseguys, you know, do the same
(01:57:22):
thing.
So it's awesome to see you guysdoing this stuff and I thank
you, amy and doug and shannonand sean, for all coming on
tonight.
It was a blast to have you guys.
Um, and just one little tidbit, you know, because I'm a gen x
person, get off facebook, gobuild a discord, make a discord,
just make a discord and youwill have a much easier time
(01:57:45):
doing a discord because peopleit's like kind of the new
Facebook, but it's not all thegarbage of Facebook and a lot of
people that you know might bein you know the generation or
the groups that you're trying tolook for that are the excited
ones.
I want to do stuff.
Don't go to like I.
When I was on Facebook Iunsubscribed from the podo group
because it was a freakingdumpster fire of.
Every time it's like someonewould post something and be like
why'd you?
go.
(01:58:06):
Why'd you go activate thatplace?
You don't do that.
It's like stop, you know beinga you know lid, and oh, that'll
never work, exactly right.
Yeah, that antenna doesn't, youknow, have the right resistance
and it's a, you know, our fieldis blah blah.
I'm like shut up.
I just put a wire up there andI'm playing and having fun and
made 20 contacts.
That that's golden in my book.
Speaker 4 (01:58:24):
So, yeah, cool I'll
have to look for somebody to
teach me discord.
That's the next one well, mygirlfriends are trying to make
me do.
Uh, what is it uh?
Twitter, not twitter.
What's the x?
Speaker 1 (01:58:38):
x, yeah, yeah well,
if you ever need help with
discord, feel free to ping anyone of us.
I mean, I set up our discord.

You know, once you get the allyour uh, you know logos and
everything up there, I'm surepeople want to jump on board and
(01:59:01):
grab it just for their own.
You know stickers, for they canlaptops, and you know everybody
in the ham radio computer lovesstickers.
So you know, when that comesout, let us know we'll put a

You can, you know, get peopleto grab those, because I think
that's a really cool sticker anddefinitely an awesome club.
