Ever stared at your cluttered ham radio desk wondering how to transform it into something more functional? You're not alone. This episode dives deep into the practical realities of creating an effective ham shack workspace that evolves with your operating style.

Todd shares his frustrations with his current monitor setup, sparking a candid conversation about the various approaches to building an efficient operating position. We explore everything from monitor choices (Do curved ultrawide displays actually help or hinder?), computer setups (Mac vs. Windows dilemmas), and the lighting challenges that plague content creators. The team shares hard-earned wisdom from their own station-building mistakes, offering practical advice on testing equipment before purchasing and understanding your workflow needs before investing.

The conversation reveals how modern ham stations have evolved beyond just accommodating radios—they must now support digital modes, video production, streaming, and more. Paul and Eric share specific configurations from their own shacks, while emphasizing that comfort ultimately determines how much you'll actually use your station: "If you're comfortable using it, then you're going to use it."

Between the technical talk, we celebrate a group of Florida college students who organized their own POTA activation across multiple universities—a heartening example of youth engagement in the hobby. We also put Todd through his paces with three extra class exam questions, with mixed results!

Whether you're building your first shack or reimagining your existing setup, this episode offers invaluable perspectives on creating a space that works for you today while remaining adaptable for tomorrow. Because as we all discover, your operating position will change—sometimes dramatically—as your ham radio journey continues.

Childs.
No, not really, but you know.
It's next on Live Free and Hamtonight.
Well, hello and welcome to LiveFree and Ham podcast.
This is our weekly show wherewe discuss ham radio topics and,

(01:00):
you know, maybe, ham radiotopics adjacent in New Hampshire
, new England and beyond, and soif this is your first time here
, we're thrilled to have you.
Or maybe you're a regularlistener and you've been hanging
out with us since way back when.
Well, we appreciate you, andthanks again for tuning in to
tonight's episode, so let's, asalways, roll right into it.
I'm your host, eric callsignN1JUR, and with my Co-host

(01:27):
tonight.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
It's Paul N1OJ.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
And W1STJ Todd, still a general and happy about it,
and forever, as long as the showcontinues on, alright.
Well, as we always do, beforewe get into a topic, we like to
talk about ourselves here.
So our storefront, as always,is up over at livefreeandhamcom
forward slash stop, and wealways say, hey, why don't you

(01:53):
head on over there, check outall the great merch?
We actually got a review fromour store, so I am super psyched
to share that today.
This one came from David.
He picked up our Lifree and HamDram, which is on well, not on
sale.
It's available.
However, it's on a limitedavailable and I think we only

(02:14):
had like less than about 12 or13 left.
So you know, if you want tojump on that, definitely jump on
that.
Otherwise, you know, oncethey're gone, they're gone.
But he says five out of fivestars.
It's a great glass.
I would love to see a largerglass suitable for maybe adding
a large ice cube.
Uh, he says I drink mostwhiskeys with a cube, but you

(02:35):
know we'll use this one for theones that I don't need the ice.
Well, dave, we appreciate thereview there.
Thanks again for picking up abunch of those glasses and we
appreciate your support in thechannel and we will consider
that next time, when we're youknow, maybe releasing another
glass, you know something I'llfit an ice cube.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Get on that, Eric.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
You can get that to work, yeah, or just maybe get
smaller ice cubes.
That's another option.
Come on, things like you know.
Maybe you need to go out andbuy one of those custom fridges
that make the very perfect iceball, you know, and then it'll
fit right in the glass, you knowjust to get them a bigger.
Just get them a bigger one.
Well, we'll take that intoconsideration.

(03:11):
So again thanks, dave, for I'llget you the bigger one.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
We'll, we'll, we'll make it happen Okay.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
All right.
Well, thank you again, Dave, for all that feedback.
We appreciate you, the reviewthere, and, like I said, if we
release a glass, like Todd said,we will make sure that we get
you one in your pretty hot handsthere.
So, again, thanks for thereview and we all appreciate it.
And so we also had anotherorder come through before we get
into the piggies there.
Derek Payne ordered two livefree and ham glasses just from
the store.
So, Derek, those have just goneout a couple of days ago, so
make sure you check your mailboxfor that.

(03:46):
And, uh, you know, we'd love tohear your uh input whether you
like them, um, because we alllove them here.
Um, and again, thank you againfor Derek for supporting the
channel and picking up, uh, somereally cool stuff, All right.
Well, um, the thing that we havealluded to, Paul has got it so
eloquently balanced on hismicrophone there.
We've mentioned this before.

(04:07):
Well, maybe you're, you knowyou're, you've been a Jeeper and
you, you know you deal with theducks and you know all that
stuff.
Well, now we've got somethingreally cool, uh, over here at
the live free and ham works.
Here We've been puttingtogether some really cool things
and so we created the thingcalled Hamlets really cool
things and so we created thething called Hamlets and so the
you can go over to get ham.
That's G E, T, H, A, M, M, E,Dcom.

(04:28):
Check it out over there, Pickyourself up some.
But really we're trying to justbuild some.
You know, cool way to be ableto show folks how awesome you
know maybe their antenna setupson their cars.
And so, just like the Jeepersdo for other Jeepers, we as ham
radio operators now can grabthese things and easily put your

(04:49):
call sign on a small littletoken on the bottom of that and
drop that off on the dash of thecar, the handle, anywhere that
they can pick it up.
It's nice and pink, so it'seasy to find and let them know
that, hey, we see your 15antennas on your car and we know
you're a cool ham, just like uswith our one.
So you know, head over there toGetHamcom, like I said, and

(05:11):
pick up your piggies there.
And you know if you are actuallygot some yourself and you want
to send, you know us your photosof you secretly placing these
out in the wild.
We'd love to see that.
We always want to share thatwith folks.
Or you can just tag us in anyof your socials with a tag of
pound sign, get hammed, andwe'll make sure we scoop those

(05:31):
photos up and we'll showcasethem up on our discord and our
website so cool, All right?
Well, as always, we always lovefeedback and so we got a couple
of ways you can contact usagain.
The old and tried and truemethod is via SMS.
There's a link down in all ofour show notes and even up on
our website that allows you toleave a review.
Just make sure, as Todd says,to leave your call sign or your

(05:53):
name, because we only know youby four digits and you know,
unless that's, you know yourofficial way that you
communicate or that's how youidentify, you know.
Then we'll leave it like that.
Otherwise, you know, make sureyou just include your name so we
can give you credit for it andyou can reach out via that.
You can leave us through ourlovely voicemail and yes, this
is a thing folks that you knowhave been thinking that it was.

(06:16):
You know a farce, or you knowsomething.
You know like area 51, you know.
Now you can call and leave us avoicemail and you can do that
at 978-233-1142 and we will playit on our next episode.
So keep them coming, guys.
We've had a few in the past andwe're enjoying it.
It's been a fun uh way to beable to communicate with you
guys.

(06:36):
So if you got questions, ideasfor next future shows, whatever
um we want to hear about, sofeel free to leave us a quick
voicemail and we'll make sure webring it into our next episode.
Wait and lastly, for those.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
What's the number again, todd?

Speaker 1 (06:53):
978-233-1142.
That's 978-233-1142.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
But we have something to solidify that though, don't
we?
Oh, we sure do.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
You know, know you can join the fun, be the biggest
fan call that number and lendan ear, live free and have it's.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
Chris Stone, from morning blues to midnight snack.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
They've got the scoop , never looking back stories,
news and quirky bits.
It's the podcast that's full ofhits.
So live free and have you knowyou can join the fun, be the

(07:43):
biggest.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
And you heard it here , folks.
Now I want to add to that factthat you know those that might
be watching, obviously, in ourYouTube channel.
You notice that all of thosepeople that were calling that
phone number were clothed.
You don't actually physicallyhave to be clothed because we
won't see you, so it's noproblem whatsoever have to be
clothed because we won't see you, so it's no problem whatsoever.
Feel free to be able to call usup while you're sitting there
in your favorite birthday suitand leave us a message.

(08:10):
You know you could, you know, leave out the fact that you're
sitting in your birthday suit, but you know, I'm totally fine
with you know.
However, you want to talk to us.
That's one awesome way wealways want to, you know, extend
the opportunity and, you know, reach out to our clients, our
community there.
So again, check that number out.

(08:31):
Leave us a voicemail.
We want to hear from you, allright.
And lastly, you know the oldmethod, the tried and true kind
of, you know, postal mail.
You know email functionality issend an email to livefreeandham
at gmailcom.
Functionality is send an emailto livefreeandham at gmailcom.
Or you can head over to ourwebsite, like a few of others
done, and use our contact formthere and fill that out and feel
free to send us an update andwithout further ado.

(08:54):
We always do our live streamonce a month and so this month
is no different.
So if you want to be on the endand you want to be
participating in that monthlylive stream because, heck, we
don't know when we're going todo them, it's kind of like a
spur of the moment thing and we,you know, usually schedule them
24, 48 hours from when wedecide that we're going to do it
and you know we're off to theraces.

(09:15):
So, you know, make sure yousubscribe to our YouTube channel
and make sure you ring thatbell so you get notified anytime
, because we'd love to have youon our live stream and you get
to hang out and have fun withall the shenanigans that we do
over there.
So looking forward to seeingyou there as well.
And lastly, the Patreon.
We drive this home a lot, but Ithink, guys, you know those

(09:37):
that are in the know and I knowthere are a bunch out there.
There's 14 or 15 people, orroughly about that, that are
already patron members ofvarying degrees.
So you know exactly what you'regetting out of the whole
Patreon experience with Liffreyand ham.
You know, obviously you get,you know, the backend, you know
banter back and forth of all ofus uncut and raw in our Patreon

(09:59):
as well, as, you know, freeaccess to discounts and t-shirts
and stickers and and all thecool stuff that we're, you know,
putting through there.
Um, and we'll actually probablybe scheduling soon.
We're going to try tocoordinate, uh, you know, our
first Patreon, uh member, uh,live stream.
So that'll be coming soon.
So, patreon members, you know, make sure you're still a Patreon

(10:19):
member and, uh, you know, keepan eye out for that, we'll be
releasing that link out soon andkeep an eye out for that, we'll
be releasing that link out soon.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
So looking forward to that, and you've got plenty of
time to become a member becausethat channel member live stream
is going to happen sooner thanyou know it, so don't delay.
Join now.
As Bob Koff said, it's aslittle as $3.99 a month.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
We got to make a WAV file out of that one, just so we
have something to play.
And thank you again, bob, forpromoting the show.
So it always is great.
All right, cool, so let's getinto our usual little tidbits
here.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have your
attention?
I've just been handed an urgentand horrifying news story.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
Everybody.
We got some news.
Slow down, Boog, Let me handlethis.
We've got some news.
I've got bad news and bad news.

Speaker 2 (11:15):
I have reviewed ship's personnel Captain.
Congratulations, you've gotmail.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
All right, we do have some mail.
Tonight We've got two Great Twomails.
First one from Sean Pothier.
He says hi guys, thanks againfor the show.
I thought I would send anotheremail to keep Todd busy and
awake.
So I'm wondering does he think?

Speaker 3 (11:38):
I sleep on this show.
Is that what he's saying?

Speaker 1 (11:42):
Jeez, guys are giving me digs.
Anyway, sean, it says I have apotential show topic suggestion.
I'm sure you probably coveredthis in the past.
Who about a walkthrough of theactual POTUS site and process,
showing how to schedule andannounce your activation,
showing how to post your plannedactivation on the POTUS website

(12:04):
and how you log and submit yourlogs, what software and
hardware you use tricks of thetrade Great topic.
I love talking about POTA and Ithink we did talk about it once
.
I think we did a coupleepisodes on POTA, but it would
be something to kind of go backto, because there's been a lot
more parks and some new new uhlogging software that's been out

(12:25):
.
So definitely a great topic.
I appreciate the um suggestionand we'll put it on our list and
, uh, hopefully we'll do thatone sooner than later.
He also wanted me to say FYI,judy Shannon and Angela were
great.
Watch your backs, they'rekicking POTA ass.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
They are those girls, man.
They know how to do POTA.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
Yeah, yeah, and they are.
That's from Sean KB1GIY.
So thanks, sean, appreciateyour contacts.

Speaker 3 (12:51):
I love, love the idea and thanks for watching the
show, yeah, for those that maynot know, the show that we're
referring to, that would be ourPOTA party 25, 2025, 2025, 2025
that we had, uh, several of thePOTA ladies on to talk about, uh
, women's international, women'sday.
Go check that out if youhaven't.
And, uh, you know, party on man.
So back to you bud.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
All right, uh, our second email uh came from uh
Dave mentioned on ham radioinventions and uh the call for
change.
So he says I enjoyed the livelydiscussion about the ARRL and
some good points were made, butI was very skeptical of the
salary reported by Dave Minsterof the ARRL.

(13:34):
Here's the link to probe listof nonprofit budgets in detail
and they report that the salaryin 2023 was $303,246.
Still a lot, but much morereasonable than the figured you
use 73.
So we're taking that veryseriously because we don't want

(13:55):
to give false information and Ithink we're going to address
this on our individual channelsand I believe Paul N10G is
working on that to kind offollow up with you and um and
the rest of you guys that werelistening to, uh see where we
got that figure from and uh whatthe uh closest numbers that we

(14:15):
could come up with and uhactually reference that.
So thanks for the comment, uh,good comment and um, we'll uh
see uh where that goes Just tochime in there so that's going
to actually come out as a hamdiary episode on the Live Free
and Ham channel.
Oh, excellent.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
And you know.
So I was thinking while youwere reading the first email so
we each have kind of our ownsetups that we like to do, right
, and so I think that would alsobe a very good ham diaries, uh,
kind of response, where wecould each kind of display our
own you know, this is how wespot, this is the software we

(14:57):
use, this is what radio we bring, et cetera, et cetera, et
cetera, right, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
That's a great idea.
Yeah, I'm gonna try.
I'm just learning how to dothese videos and stuff.
I've only done a few, so maybeI'll do that as one of my ham
diaries To go over my POTUSstuff.
But yeah, so Eric, was thereany more?
Because those are the two thatI had.

Speaker 3 (15:23):
I didn't see any other ones.

Speaker 1 (15:24):
Alright, yeah, so guys.
Yeah, so, uh, eric, was thereany more?
Cause those are the two that Ihad.
I didn't see any other ones.
I think that's all right.
Yeah, so guys, um, love thenews.
Uh, love when you guys give usfeedback.
We read them all, we discussthem all and, uh, we want to put
them on the air.
So you guys know what, that weare listening to you and, uh,
we're going to follow what youguys want.
So appreciate it and keep themcoming, keep me busy and awake,

(15:47):
according to.
I don't know if I should beoffended by that or I should
just be like I was like, wait aminute, this guy thinks I'm
sleeping all the time.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
I want to jerk the wheel into a goddamn bridge and
bump it.

Speaker 3 (16:02):
That's right.
That's what you told me boy, ohman All good.
Well, you know, I love that.
No, I love that one Dude.
You know, I love that idea.
I think we'll definitely haveto do a ham diary.
So if you haven't subscribed toLive Free in Ham, this is a

(16:22):
good segue.
So if you haven't subscribed toLive Free in Ham, this is a
good segue.
So if you haven't subscribed tolive free and him, first and
foremost, it's like what are youdoing?
First and foremost, you shouldbe in the know.
And second of all, we're tryingto grow the channel.
So obviously we can help.
You know, need your help, andone way you can do that is
obviously subscribe to thechannel, because I think once we
hit 500 guys, we're we'reprobably going to do a live

(16:43):
stream, we're going to dosomething, you know give away or
something to that effect.
So you know, we want tocelebrate with you guys.
We want to continue to.
You know, grow the milestones, grow the channel, grow you live
free and ham, because we lovedoing this stuff, we love
meeting our listeners, we lovebeing part of the community and
we love you guys.
So you know all the better thatwe can all just have a big
giant party at the uh, you know,500 mark.
So keep that coming.

(17:03):
But yeah, ham diaries, I likethat idea.
I'm gonna have to think thatthrough a little bit.
Um, because right now my mostof my podo setup is my truck, so
I literally just pull up to theyou know the parking space, and
the antenna goes up and I, Iactivate yeah, and you say.

Speaker 2 (17:19):
You say that I cheat by using a recording that's not
cheating.

Speaker 3 (17:24):
It's mobile it.

Speaker 2 (17:24):
It's mobile HF man.

Speaker 1 (17:25):
That's a whole new category.

Speaker 3 (17:28):
I still call CQ.

Speaker 1 (17:29):
It's cheating.
No, your daughter does.
Your daughter does on arecording.

Speaker 3 (17:33):
Not on the truck.
That actually recording is onlyexclusively set on my portable
radio, because I need that whenI'm out in the field.
It's break glass, remember?
All right, cool, well, dude, that is awesome.
Love the feedback, guys.
Keep it coming.
And so always, if you want toreach out to us, you can head

(17:54):
over to our website, use ourcomment form, you can send us an
email livefreeandham atgmailcom, and if you leave us a
voicemail, we will play it,because in essence, that's
Todd's stick and he wants tohear people talk back to him,
otherwise he might fall asleep, and we don't want that to happen
.
Insomnia is not a good thing, especially with this show,
although after we do his segment, it seems to be.

(18:15):
That's the case, because all ofa sudden our numbers fall off
drastically, because apparently, something extra is the only
thing that everyone sticksaround for.
Just give me hell, anyway allright, they want to make fun of
how stupid I am.

Speaker 1 (18:29):
I could be like.
I could be like, look, youcould be as stupid as me and
still be a hand.

Speaker 3 (18:34):
They sympathize with you, they connect with you, they
understand your pain and yourstruggle.
Extra is tough.
We all know it.
Paul and I have been through it.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
And occasionally the questions that come up might
actually prompt somebody toremember oh that's right, this,
this is helpful.

Speaker 1 (18:51):
Not Okay Now.
Now, listen, you're right, butI'm going to tell you something.
When I was studying, one of thequestions came up that we did
that.
I got wrong on the thing, but Iremembered it because I got it
wrong.
And when I was studying anddoing the question, I got it
right because I'm like oh yeah, that's the one we did the other
day and I got it wrong, so Iknew.

Speaker 3 (19:11):
Well, you've had a few of those, so it's actually
helping.

Speaker 1 (19:13):
You've had a few of those, yeah, I've had well more
than a few.

Speaker 3 (19:18):
But All right, anyway , let's roll the.
You know the bean footage.
They say and go into Doing goodGood.

Speaker 2 (19:24):
Doing good you do, that's good.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
Do good, do good You're doing good, good, good,
good, good, good, absolutely.
I do Good, good, doing good Bob, doing real good.
And right now my only outlet ismy ham radio.

Speaker 3 (19:46):
Well, this is our do good segment, guys, or what we
call doing good, and so we allaspire to do good ham radio, you
know, no matter what it mightbe, you know we won't get to the
.
You know some of the stuff thatwe really want to talk about,
but ultimately, you know, whether you might be assisting
in a disaster, providingcommunications for that local
road race, um, or hosting a podameetup, which we all love poda
meetups I.
You know, I don't know aboutyou guys, but I'm all for the
next poda meetup, which we alllove, put a meetup.
So you know I don't know aboutyou guys, but I'm all for the
next photo meetup coming up, forsure, we all love to

(20:06):
participate in those things.
So you know.
But however, you know, sometimes the negative voices
overshadow all of our enjoyment,no matter what they might be.
The sad hams.
You know the people, you knowsaying it's not like you know it
used to be, whatever be thecase.
So I'm raising my fist andsaying bring on those good deeds
, let's have some fun, let'sshare the good excitement that

(20:26):
we have in ham radio and you canbe part of that and you can
help tell your story aboutwhatever it might be, and this
week we actually have a story.
So I'm pretty psyched to sharethis one.
So I'm gonna say you know,we're gonna start off.
Matt sends me uh, matt, k-n-4-e-D-G.
He says, through the CollegiateAmateur Radio Program, arlcarp,

(20:49):
the Discord server, multipleFlorida universities planned out
a POTA meetup this past weekend.
Now I don't know when thetime-to-date stamp, I didn't
copy it in, but this must havebeen in the past Members of the
University of Florida, university of Southern Florida,
university of Central Floridaand Embry Riddle university met
at Lake Griffin state parkyesterday and we activated park

(21:11):
us one, eight, eight, nine on HF.
Good job, guys.
That's awesome.
We had a blast setting upantennas operating and even
though it was a rainy day whichdude you know even if it's a
rainy day, you're still doingpoda, you're still playing radio
Awesome stuff.
This event was made possible bythe ARL CARP, which I'm not sure
what the CARP is, you know.
You may want to Google that, guys, and maybe we can figure

(21:32):
out what that means Led by BobInderbitzen, which is a really
cool last name NQ1R, and AndyMaluzzi, kk4lwr.
However, the event wasinitiated and planned by Florida
college students, which isreally cool.
That is awesome that you guysfrom a college perspective are

(21:54):
leading this and, as the currentpresident of the UF club, I was
happy to have three of ourstudents attend the event, even
though it was only an hour driveaway.
In total, there were 10attendees Good job, which was
great numbers for a Sunday event, even though it was only an
hour drive away.
In total, there were 10attendees, which was great
numbers for a Sunday event, which is even better on a Sunday
.
Overall, a very positive eventto show that ham radio is active
in Florida colleges.

(22:15):
Dude, that was awesome.
What do you guys think?

Speaker 2 (22:18):
Absolutely.
Carp is the Collegiate AmateurRadio Program Fantastic, um.
And so CARP is the collegiateamateur radio program.
But uh, yeah, fantastic that,uh, we've got.
We've got good things comingout of the universities, cause,
let me tell you, lately I'vebeen very disappointed with
what's coming out of theuniversities.

Speaker 3 (22:40):
That can be all found on N1OG in.

Speaker 2 (22:42):
New Hampshire.
Uh, cool, that can be all foundon N1OG in New.

Speaker 3 (22:44):
Hampshire.
Cool.
Well, dude, mark Matt, I shouldsay thank you again for sending
us.
He's the president of the GatorAmateur Radio Club, which I'm
all cool for.
I'm going to have to go checkthem out on the floor next time
and I know Paul's eventuallygoing down there.
Hey, say hello.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
I'll be down in Florida for the entire month of
May.

Speaker 3 (23:05):
Oh, awesome, all right.
Well then you'll have to swingby those guys and maybe hit them
up with a podo.
So awesome, all right.
Well, you know, as always, youknow you can send us your doing
good episode in three easy ways.
You obviously leave us via thevoicemail at nine, seven, eight,
two, three, three, one, one, four, two.
You can head over tolivefreeandhamcom forward slash,

(23:27):
do good.
For those that like to be ableto fill in forms and comment
type stuff, you can leave us along form message story and
we'll make sure we read it onour next episode.
Or if you are one of the trulydedicated ham radio type A
people, we are looking for youto step up and send us a win

(23:49):
link.
You can send your do good viawin link and it can be telnet.
I'll let it slide, but wereally want you to step up and
we want it via RF to RF and youhave to send it to only one
person, because all the rest ofus are slackers.
Todd and I to N1OG, as he'spatiently waiting for to send it
to only one person, because allthe rest of us are slackers.
Todd and I to N1OG, as he'spatiently waiting for it to show

(24:10):
up in his win link email inbox.
So send it there and if that'sthe case, we will make sure we
get you on our list and in afuture you know kind of live
stream we might bring all youguys on and we can all hang out
and have a great, big, hugeparty, and I'll talk about our
doing good episodes.
So all good there.
So all right, well, with thatwe roll into.

(24:42):
And now a little something extrawith Todd WNSTJ.
All right.
Well, you've heard it here.
This is where we help Toddstudy for his extra class
license.
Folks, in each episode, asalways, you know you've already

(25:03):
become too so familiar with thisprocess, it's ingrained.
Um, we pick three questionswith the extra cross question
pool, obviously from our on uhair ve uh tester.
Uh, to test his knowledge andhope he gets his upgrade,
because I'm sure you're thinkingthe same thing we are.
Get your freaking extra, myfriend.
Come on, let's go.
Um, if you'd like to followalong, you can head over to ham

(25:27):
studyorg, which is a greatresource to help you prepare for
your test, and it's alwaysrecommended by three out of four
volunteer examiners.
Heck, I think four out of four, because anything else is, you
know, subpar in my mind andagain, the ARL was not available
for comment.
But that's fine, I don't reallycare.
So, without further delay, Ihand it over to our VE

(25:47):
Quizmaster, who has no influenceon any of the question test
pool.
Take it away, paul.

Speaker 2 (25:54):
Alright, so now we got the proper layout here.
Todd question number one forthe evening.
What is described by theconstellation diagram of a QAM
or QPSK signal?
Is it A how many carriers maybe present at the same time.

(26:18):
B Frequency response of thesignal stream.
B Frequency response of thesignal stream.
C the possible phase andamplitude states for each symbol
or.
D the number of bits used forerror correction in the protocol
Come on Button.

(26:43):
As always, I don't know is notan acceptable answer.

Speaker 3 (26:49):
Yep, it's not on the list.

Speaker 1 (26:53):
All right, I'm going to go with C.
Possible phase and amplitudestate for each oh.

Speaker 3 (27:12):
I'm going to try A.

Speaker 2 (27:18):
Well, eric, I'll tell you right from the start you're
wrong.

Speaker 3 (27:23):
Dog.

Speaker 2 (27:25):
Todd's got it right.
The possible phase in amplitudestays free.
So Todd has had this questionbefore, but just as a refresher.
So has Eric too it's so is Erictoo I have.

(27:46):
Okay, it was.
It was on the podcast.
Yes, so a constellation diagramis a 2d plot where each point
on the plot represents a uniquecombination of phase and
amplitude of a signal.
So hint, the two examplemodulation schemes used in the
question quadrature amplitudemodulation and quadrature phase

(28:10):
shift keying, which togethercontain both keywords in the
answer.
Well done, Todd, forremembering.

Speaker 1 (28:22):
See, this is working.
Suck, suck, all right, allright, oh yeah, see this is
working suck, suck, all right, all right.

Speaker 2 (28:30):
Question number two what is the deviation ratio of
an fm phone signal having amaximum frequency swing of plus
or minus seven and a halfkilohertz, if the highest
modulation frequency is threeand a half kilohertz?

(28:51):
So you gotta, you gotta, remember some math here.
But is the answer B 2.14, c, 47or D .47?

Speaker 3 (29:29):
I'm going to go with B 2.14.
Well, based off some littlemath in my head, I'm thinking B
as well.

Speaker 2 (29:39):
Close enough to three kilohertz.
Wrong button, wrong buttonwrong button there's the right
button, congratulations.
Yes, 2.14 is the correct answer, and so, for those that can see,

(30:02):
deviation equals frequencyswing divided by frequency.
So, to do the math out, you get7.5 kilohertz divided by 3.5
kilohertz, which equals 2.142857, which you round to 2.14.
And so, absolutely great job,you got it correct.

(30:24):
All right, todd.
And so, absolutely great job,you got it correct.
All right, todd, all right, you're, you're two for two.
The third and final question ofthe evening what is a common

(30:44):
cause of over modulation of af?
It A?
Excessive transmit audio levels, b Bit errors in the modem.
C Excessive frequency deviation, or is it D Excessive numbers
of retries?

Speaker 3 (31:15):
I'm going to go with D oh.

Speaker 2 (31:24):
I think C.
Okay, Todd said D and D is notcorrect.
Eric said C, which is also notcorrect.
The correct answer is A.

(31:45):
Excessive transmit audio levels, damn it.
So AFSK audio frequency shiftkeying produces audio that is
then sent to AFM transmitter.
Afm transmitter modulates itscarrier frequency with this
audio.
If the audio levels are toohigh, it may deviate more than
the allowed specified amountfrom its carrier frequency,

(32:06):
which is called overmodulation.
The effect is to createsplatter across the band which
is visible to annoyed receiverson a waterfall plot, and it
interferes with their signals.
So try to avoid overmodulationas much as possible.
Your memory aid all right, captain your memory aid for this

(32:28):
question is we're talking aboutaudio, audio frequency shift
keying, so the correct answer isthe only one that mentions
audio thank you bits plus atoms.

Speaker 3 (32:42):
Thank you Bits Plus Adams, Really.

Speaker 1 (32:47):
I think you should give it to me.
What do you know about it?
Nothing.

Speaker 3 (32:54):
Nothing, of course, I don't.

Speaker 1 (32:56):
How many did you get right today?

Speaker 2 (32:59):
Zero, but how many?
Did you get right, todd, okay.

Speaker 1 (33:04):
Then here's my counteroffer.

Speaker 3 (33:10):
I love that Favorite song, Favorite song.
Anything you have to say foryourself tonight Todd.

Speaker 1 (33:21):
I could have gotten it Okay.
I should have studied harder.

Speaker 3 (33:26):
We're getting there, it's all's all good man.

Speaker 1 (33:28):
It's a journey I won't.

Speaker 3 (33:28):
I won't forget that one again, though I know I will,
so I'm all set all right.
Well, so, as we always wrapthis up, so if you're on the
journey of studying yourtechnician, general or extra
class, like todd uh, then inthat case hamstudyorg is an
awesome resource for gettingyour ticket.
And, as we always throw outevery time, hey, if you've

(33:52):
recently gotten your license ormaybe you've upgraded, we want
to know.
Send us an email atdeliveryandham at gmailcom.
Text us, leave a voicemailmessage it doesn't really matter
or even use our comment form, for that matter.
Let us know that you gotupgraded.
Because we want to celebratewith you, we want to recognize
you here on the show, becauseit's really cool to have people

(34:13):
always working towards gettingand achieving their goals,
obviously, and upgrading theirlicenses, and more so when you
make that leap from technicianto general, I mean that's a big
jump.
And, and more so of when youmake that leap from technician
to general, I mean that's a bigjump and a lot of great
privileges and awesome stuffopen up for you.
So we want to celebrate withyou, we want to share and have
fun.
I got one for you.

Speaker 2 (34:34):
So Kilo Delta 3, alpha, papa Mike, his name is
Cody and he just got histechnician and he's a brand new
Flag and Torch member, cody, andhe just got his technician and
he's a brand new flag and torchmember Um, and so he uh, he
threw it in the in the uhdiscord he said, hey, listen, I
just got my tech uh, reallyexcited.
Um, he's a, he's an 11 Bravo,which is infantry with the

(34:58):
Pennsylvania army national guard, and so I said, hey, listen.
And so I said, hey, listen, cody, 100%, thank you for
joining the discord andcongratulations on getting your
technician.
So there's your shout outawesome very cool.

Speaker 3 (35:13):
well, good luck, cody , and definitely looking to make
contact with you in the futureon the air.
And you know, hey, you know, ifyou come, join, hang out with
the community, you know we'llsupport you.
You know, working towards, youknow wherever direction you want
to go in, it's always fun.
Ham radio is an awesome hobbyto be in and always fun and a
lot of crap to explore, for sure.
All right, well, with thatwe're going to dive into our

(35:37):
usual show format.
So let's start off with Mr N1OGGrouch.
How's your ham radio week going?
Bud Well all right.

Speaker 2 (35:44):
So my ham radio week was good.
While it didn't actually have alot of ham radio in it, I did
do a little bit of some contactsfrom the truck on repeaters,
talked to some people here andthere.
Anthony is always on the uhrepeater, um, so, kc1rek,

(36:09):
anthony, hats off to you.
Uh, always, always good to knowthat you're there, um, but I, I
I have in the mobile commandcenter now I have the 7300 set
up with the auto tuner and thepower supplies and batteries as
backup.
I've got the computer fullyoperational with the all powers

(36:35):
unit as a UPS.
So it doesn't matter if I have, you know, shore power or not.
I can still fully operate themobile command center.
Once I figure out the antennasituation, we're going to be
back on the air.
That's the last piece of thepuzzle.
I'm going to go 50 ohm coaxprobably, I don't know, it's

(37:01):
maybe 15 to 20 feet total lengthby the time I get to where the
wall jack is, and then it'll be75 ohm coax to the outside of
the RV and then we're going togo back to 50 ohm coax.
So it's going to be.
There's going to be a littlebit of math, you know, as far as
velocity factors and coaxlosses and all those things.

(37:24):
But I'm really really excitedabout it.
I'm also learning about magloops because I have this crazy
idea.
I saw a truck and the gentlemanthat owns this truck.
He used copper pipe to makerectangular frames and he put

(37:44):
the frames in kind of an A-frameshape.
He used copper pipe to makerectangular frames and and he
and he put the frames in kind ofan, a frame shape on on the
roof of his ladder rack and witha, with a mag loop you know
design to to his antenna and andit got me thinking and I said,
well, I mean, if that works onthe top of a truck, imagine if

(38:06):
my radiating elements were like26 feet long by you know four
feet high and they met at thetop and it made an electrical
connection.
But for travel days I couldfold it down flat and not have
to worry about, you know, roadclearances or any of that
nonsense.
So, yeah, so that's that's thenext project in the works.

(38:30):
It's going to it's going to beone heck of an experiment and a
whole lot of learning, but I'mexcited to do it and that's one
of the great things about thishobby.

Speaker 3 (38:40):
Totally.
I mean we are.
I assume we'll be able to catchmore of the details up on your
channel on that whole build thanever else.

Speaker 2 (38:46):
Yeah yeah, obviously, there's 100% worth documenting
the experiments and how it lookson the antenna analyzer and the
tiny SA that I've got and allof those things.
So, yeah, I'll definitely do avideo on that.
It'll probably take me a bitthings.
So yeah, I'll definitely do avideo on that.
Uh, it'll probably take me abit.

(39:07):
So just subscribe to live freeand ham, so that way you get the
weekly updates here in thepodcast.

Speaker 3 (39:12):
There you go.
Sweet, awesome.
Well, that sounds like a totaluh you know transformation there
.
I'm going to have to, for now, forever refer to the grouch
mobile command center as justGMC.
I know that, you know, maybe itmight be a little bit of an
insult if you're a Chevy owner, but whatever, you know, I tow it
with a.
Toyota, so there you go, there'sa slap in the face to all of

(39:36):
those GMC owners.
But yeah, no, looking forwardto all of those on your channel
going forward.
And you know, as you may nothave referenced, and by the time
this airs, in terms of thepodcast, yeah, we'll have
already had our 3,000 subscribergiveaway.
So Paul and I are doing a dualsubscriber giveaway there.
So if you haven't paidattention to our channels or

(39:58):
subscribed to either of us, makesure you head over there and
come be a part of that.
Those shenanigans should bereally fun.

Speaker 2 (40:03):
Yeah, click that damn bell.

Speaker 3 (40:06):
Yeah, come on, guys, hit it all the time, know when
we go live.
Anyway, all right.
Well, with that, over to you, todd.

Speaker 1 (40:16):
How is your ham radio week?
Well, I did a big project where?
Well, not a big project, a longoverdue project.
I organized all my ham radiostuff.
Now, when I say organized, Igot everything labeled.
I got pouches with labels on it.
What is he doing?
You see him.
Paul, you're frozen and Eric is.

(40:42):
I don't know what he's doing.

Speaker 3 (40:43):
Anyway yeah.

Speaker 1 (40:46):
So I organized my shack.
I got all my electrical stuffwires, parts, you name it all
organized in containers, bags, whatever Everything's labeled.
So now I have it all in onespot and when I need something
I'm not going to be searchingfor it.
So I worked on that and thenbought myself a charger for my

(41:10):
new poda my poda adventure whichone did you ultimately end up
going with?

Speaker 2 (41:15):
because I know we were debating on a few oh yeah,
yeah, I got the the no-go genius, yeah, five you got to put it
like directly in front of youmaybe.
Oh, yeah, yeah, I got theNoCoGenius.
Yeah, five.
You got to put it directly infront of you maybe.

Speaker 1 (41:37):
Yeah, there you go.
There you go, nocogenius5.
Right, and the reason I'm doingthat is my BioAnno needs shrink
wrap, as you can see.
See, and I keep buying shrinkwrap and it doesn't fit and it's
a lot heavier than my, uh, mylittle battery that I bought for
24 bucks, the uh, like thecycling bat cycle cycling LiPo 4

(42:03):
battery, it's a I think it's a10 milliamp.

Speaker 2 (42:07):
Not milliamp, that's a 10 amp 10 amp.

Speaker 1 (42:12):
Sorry, not milliamp.
I'm always thinking my RC stuff.
Yeah, 10 amp it's lighter, it'sa little bit smaller, and yeah,
then I got the charger, so I'mall set.
I just got to make someconnectors and uh, yeah, I'll be
off to California with my newsetup.
After I test it, make sure itworks.

Speaker 3 (42:32):
Do that first, yeah.

Speaker 1 (42:35):
But yeah, no, it's been so, it's been fun and, uh,
like I said I'm I'm.
The whole idea of doing this isI had a bunch of stuff in my
shack that I needed to getorganized and I put all my tools
together and I got my wire, mycoax is all together labeled and
I've been using Paul's bagsthat he His color coded system.
Yeah, I got these little, yousee, these things.

(42:58):
I got a whole bag of these, these little key chain things
and you can just write on themwith and you can like, if you
change it, you can throw it insomething else.
So I have all my things labeledwith that so I can see when I
grab a colored one, I can justsee what it is and say, oh, this
is power, that's that'sactually really smart because
it's it's not super easy towrite.

Speaker 2 (43:18):
Write on these bags, right, you know.
So, yeah, that's a great idea.

Speaker 1 (43:28):
Yeah, just got them on Amazon.
They're pretty easy and I justuse a Sharpie and I just write
on them and stick them on thezipper part and so now at least
I know when I'm grabbing a bag,I'm grabbing the right thing and
I just label it and it's good.
So, yeah, and this Noco 5 ispretty small, and when I'm
grabbing a bag, I'm grabbing theright thing and I just label it
and it's good.
So, yeah, and this Noco 5 isit's pretty small and it's uh,

(43:49):
it's actually cool because theit comes with like banana clips,
Alligator clips or whatever youcall it.
Those clips, alligator clipswhat are banana clips?
The little ones?

Speaker 3 (43:59):
Banana clips have like the the barrel kind of
style.

Speaker 2 (44:02):
They kind of like it's a piton that goes in a hole
.

Speaker 3 (44:06):
Yeah, yeah, it's a piton, it's French.
Yeah, all right.

Speaker 1 (44:10):
So the alligator clips.
But what's cool about thesealligator clips is you can take
a little Allen wrench and youcan unscrew the alligator clip
from the wire and it actuallyhas like the round connectors,
like if you're going to put iton a battery permanently, so
it's kind of cool.
Yeah, the ring terminal, so it'spretty cool, um, super easy to

(44:30):
use, works.
It's small, fits in one ofthese bags, which is, you know,
it's not very big, and um, yeah,so we'll see if this makes my
back a little bit lighter, sinceI've cut down maybe a pound or
two of my.

Speaker 3 (44:48):
Well, it might speed you through TSA a little faster
though.

Speaker 1 (44:52):
Yeah, well, yeah, I can't bring that the BioNno even
.

Speaker 3 (44:56):
Oh, you got the other one, so just put terminals on
it and you're good to go.

Speaker 2 (44:58):
Yeah and Todd like yeah.

Speaker 1 (45:00):
So yes, brother, I love you and I'm always happy to
help you spend your money in asmart, more efficient manner.
Yeah, paul did help me outbecause he said you know?
I said, hey, I need a smallcharger because I have the one I
have, it's a battery tender.

Speaker 2 (45:21):
Yeah, it's huge.

Speaker 1 (45:21):
Battery tender.
It's huge and I'm like I'm notlugging this thing around so I
wanted something small.
But you know, you never knowwhat you got.
So he says, listen, it costs alittle bit more.
But you know, as ryan's cryonce, he says, yep, yeah, buy
once, cry once.
So I, uh, it wasn't that bad.
It was 22 off, so it was.

(45:42):
You know, it was in one ofthose red deals so I bought it.
They make a one.
This is a five amp.
They make a one amp.
But to me if I was gonna likeleave a bunch of battery, like
if I was gonna leave like ahundred amp battery charged and
I wanted an electrical charger,I'd probably buy the one amp and
just let it do its thing.
But for poda and traveling Ineed a little to charge a little

(46:03):
bit faster than like overnight.
Yeah, and I, I have, I.

Speaker 2 (46:07):
I have the one amp in the morning and the 75 amp noco
.

Speaker 1 (46:11):
I love them both, fantastic chargers yeah, they do
go up in price a lot as you get, uh, more amps to it um a lot.
But depending on what you wantto charge, if you got a bunch of
100 amp batteries you need tocharge them a lot.
It might be worth it, but I'mdealing with a 10 amp and I

(46:32):
figured that's going to be fine.
So, oh, thank you for therecommendation and uh, yeah, it
was great, I got it in next daydelivery, so so it all came
today, so good to go.
Nice, very cool.
And Eric, ah well, how was yourham radio week?

Speaker 3 (46:54):
My ham radio week, just like you guys, probably
wasn't ham radio filled, although obviously the usual
when I was out and about wasalways throwing the call out in
the repeater, trying to createnoise on the airwaves, as they
say.
Um, I think, uh, you know, wealluded to a couple episodes
before where we wanted to try to, you know, maybe promote more
repeater usage and that type ofstuff.
So we're still working on thosedetails and and whatnot just

(47:16):
call out yeah, I figured what.
Yeah, exactly, just, you know, throw your call out there,
whether or not you get someone, and I, you know I've had a
couple of older club members whoyou know haven't been, uh, you
know, on the radio for a while, come back and you know we've had
some good conversations.
So, you know, always fun tomeet new people and you know,
and whether or not they do, youknow they come back or not, at
least you're doing your duediligence to get your, you know,

(47:37):
to make the airwaves.
Uh, heard, uh, across the, uh,you know, the ether there.
So, um, yeah, outside of that,I've got to finish up.
I still haven't ordered, I keepforgetting, uh to find some
time to order that 20 amp hourbattery charger so I can get my
100 amp hour battery charged, soI can actually set the settings
on my battery box and get thatfinished.

(47:58):
Um, because I'm really lookingforward to testing that one out
in the field.

Speaker 2 (48:01):
You're going with 20 amp.
I'm sure.

Speaker 3 (48:04):
Yeah, I can't quite put myself over buying the 40
amp hour for the timeframe, butI didn't want to buy something 4
amp or 8 amp when I could getthe 20 amp and still get a good,
quicker charge.
I mean I don't need itovernight or immediate, but 20
amp is not bad.
Then it will only be dead.

Speaker 1 (48:23):
What brand are you going with?

Speaker 3 (48:24):
I mean I don't need it overnight or immediate, but
20 amps not bad, then it willonly be dead.

Speaker 2 (48:27):
What, what what brand are you going with the?
Was it the Redondo?

Speaker 3 (48:29):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So, as I figured, it was aRedondo battery, the charger,
not that that really matters, but you know, I might as well
keep them together and then Ican, you know, when I set up my
battery storage, you know, areauh, which it's already currently
configured I'll just, you know, put the charger there,
dedicated to that battery, andand get it charged up.
But yeah, I, uh, I think I puta volt meter on the charger, on

(48:50):
the battery, and there's notlike it's, it's like right
around a little, you know, uh 12, a little shy of uh 12 volts.
So, yeah, it needs to becharged back up and and get, uh,
you, you know, to a placebecause you can't configure the,
the droke meter, without a,like, fully charged battery,
because it, you know, defeatsthe purpose because it doesn't
have the sensing to know that, you know, this is the actual

(49:10):
charge of the battery.
So you have to set it initiallythe right way and then
everything else kind of fallsinto place.
So I'll, uh, I'll be makingthose changes and then hopefully
I'll be able to, you know, geton the cutting room floor and
start making some updates tothat video.
So I'll be fun to do that.
But, yeah, outside of that notreally much else going on.
So that's my Ham Radio week.

Speaker 2 (49:33):
Nice, I'm excited for you to finish that battery box,
because we got to take thatbattery box out to a poda and
we'll run everything.
We'll we'll.
We'll charge your cameras offthat, we'll charge my cameras
off that, we'll run the radio.
Hell, maybe we'll we'll we'llbring an antenna that's not
resonant, so we have to have atuner a tuner I you, dude, I, I,

(49:59):
I like that idea.

Speaker 3 (50:00):
I mean, in essence, uh, I've been uh.
Well, that would be a perfecttest to beat the tire out of it
and see what we have to fix toimprove upon it.
And you know, I know the casewill be able to handle it and
just the materials in it.
But whether or not it willactually be able to deliver on
you know how I built it will beanother story.
All good, cool.

(50:34):
Well, with that guys, let's kindof dive into tonight's topic.
So, as we alluded in thebeginning, we were talking ham
soup, but really all it means isthat we're going to talk kind
of bouncing around because we'veall been busy, we've all been
doing stuff and work or otherthings in life.
We've just been getting in theway and so we've been talking
offline, obviously, on ourdiscords and between each other,
what's been going on andpurchases and things we want to

(50:57):
buy and whatnot.
So we're just going to kind ofdo a free-for-all tonight and
just kind of let the wind takeus, as they say, and see where
we kind of go with that.
So I guess you know to startthings off, you know anybody
want to pick up a spot and justkind of lay the stake down and
go.

Speaker 2 (51:15):
Well, I mean, tonight's show topics were all
Todd's ideas, so I think it'sall in fairness that Todd should
start the show, but you got tounmute yourself.

Speaker 3 (51:28):
Yeah, I think that's a great, great idea.

Speaker 1 (51:31):
All right, thank you.
I was coughing.
I didn't want to cough on youguys, yeah.

Speaker 2 (51:35):
I don't want your germs.
Keep your shit over there.

Speaker 3 (51:39):
Nevertheless that you've been coughing the past
four other episodes and notmuting, so I don't think it will
really matter at this episode.

Speaker 1 (51:46):
I'm trying to get.

Speaker 3 (51:47):
I'm trying to be more responsible, eric, you know,
yep, that's what I heard.

Speaker 1 (51:50):
Sometimes I forget, all right.
So reason I mean Eric sent hesent a little you know discord
note out saying, hey, my brain'sdead, dead, I don't have a
topic tonight.
You know, what do you want totalk about?
So I just whatever came to mymind.
I said, well, we could talkabout this and that.
So we decided to talk about allof it.
So one of the things that I washow do you get all the ham

(52:14):
radio stuff you want and then, you know, still buy eggs?

Speaker 3 (52:20):
oh, so it's.
It's the egg show, it's thechicken of the egg.
So it's a hammer, you know.

Speaker 1 (52:24):
But well, you know, live and and not break your
budget and like, what do youwant to do?
And you know, and I I'll getsomething in my head and I'll
want it and I'll I'll I'llresearch and I'll watch youtube
videos on it, and then I'll sayokay, I gotta get.
What is that?

Speaker 3 (52:37):
what?
What's the latest?

Speaker 1 (52:39):
the, you know a squirrel project well, well, I'm
sure, well, I'm just, I want toget this curved screen.
I just can't bring myself topay for it.

Speaker 2 (52:47):
Well, I might suggest something that was actually
brought up on the Northeast HamRadio live stream.
Walt brought it up, and I wasreally surprised actually to
hear Walt bring it up, because Ifigured for sure that he was a
man of diligent finances.
However, he said that he oftenuses a firm to make those big

(53:13):
purchases, as I do as well, because more often than not,
like I just don't, I don't havethe funds available, and so it's
much easier to spend, you know,$78 a month where you overpay
and you pay $150 a month, sothat way it knocks the interest
down, but then you could spreadit out, and that is how I paid

(53:35):
for both of my 7,300s.

Speaker 1 (53:40):
Yep, that's true.
So, yeah, I could do that.
But my thing is, my thing is islike, do I really want to?
I mean, I think.
So what I'm looking for is I'mlooking at this.
It's uh, I think it's a 48 inchcurved antenna and it's come
down in price 49, 49 monitor orit's come down in price for

(54:00):
monitor not a monitor.
He's talking tv no monitor, I'msorry, and my, I don't like the
way my shack is set up.
I've got two screens and I'vegot a light and I got a speaker
and it's just starting to lookcluttered.
And this, this monitor, has abuilt-in speaker, which is

(54:20):
probably better than the cheapone I bought from Amazon, maybe,
okay, and I think it is.

Speaker 3 (54:27):
And I don't even use the speaker because normally
I've got headphones on, so itdoesn't matter, okay.

Speaker 1 (54:32):
Right.
So to get that out of the way,I got two.
I have a dual.
I only have two monitors nowand they're on an arm.
But then I bought this lamp tokind of go over all, to put the
light down so I could see thedesk, and that takes up the spot

(54:53):
and there's no place to clampit, except now it blocks the arm
for one of the monitors, so Ican't really move that monitor
and I'm like this is starting tolook like I just put a bunch of
shit that I found in thebasement together, so trying to
clean it up, and that's the big, that's the big purchase.
Right, like do I do it or do Inot?
Other things that I was alsothinking about, because I'm

(55:15):
going out to California and I'mlike, do I really want to bring
all this stuff?
Like maybe I could just get asmall, you know 20 amp, you know
Pota radio.
That's small, you mean a 20watt and cheap.
Yeah, like a 20 watt that Icould just like throw in a bag
and not have to have Like theFX4CR.

Speaker 2 (55:34):
A whole backpack.

Speaker 3 (55:36):
Well, that that's.
You know, that's on a waitinglist, so you might.
By the time you go toCalifornia you won't have it,
you'll have to borrow mine.
But what do you think Like G90?

Speaker 1 (55:45):
Well, I looked at it, I saw the G90, and it's not
that much smaller than the 891.
So it's not like right.
So then I looked.
I was like, oh, L-Craft Look atthose bad boys.

Speaker 3 (55:56):
Oh my God, Whoa Holy crap.
Let me see from the price rangeof like 300 to 500.
You went like well, fuck it manI'm gonna go right at the top.

Speaker 1 (56:08):
I forgot how much they were oh my, 1500 they were
at they were at um, they were atthe, they're at the marlboro
show.
Like not this last time thetime, maybe it was this last
time, but I remember sittingthere looking at the radios and
it's like, if you didn't, if youdidn't have money issues, it's
kind of a cool set They've gotlike an, you know, for like 700

(56:31):
bucks you can get a waterfallscreen connected to it.
You can get a key here you canget, and it's small.
I mean it's like a little bitbigger than an iPhone.
It's awesome for POTA.
I'm like this is the coolestthing ever.
Then I looked at the price.
I was like holy Jesus.

Speaker 3 (56:47):
Which one are you looking at?
You're looking at the KX3s andthe KX2s.
Yeah, those are bigger than aniPhone.

Speaker 1 (56:56):
Well, they're smaller than the.
They're that big, maybe twoiPhones.

Speaker 3 (57:02):
Well, I'd say yeah.

Speaker 1 (57:03):
They're thin.

Speaker 3 (57:05):
So they're like the length I would say of like maybe
a G90, but they're a littlethinner, Right?
But yeah, my gosh, my gosh, sookay, so let's tickle this fancy
.
I'm curious Did you price outone?

Speaker 1 (57:21):
Well, yeah, I went to the website and they had all
packages and I just didn't lookat the prices.
I said, all right, I want this, this and this and that.
And I was like, yep, nothappening, it's just not
happening yeah, like well, andyou know we get into kx3 world.

Speaker 3 (57:36):
It's it's a whole new like ecosystem in my mind, like
you're gonna lead it well.
No, no shame and no harm to anyof those, the kx3 elecraft
folks, but it's an elitist group.
It's like the flex folks, foryou know radios.
It's like once you get to that, you know level, you're like
nothing matters.
I want quality, I want receiver, you know best of everything

(57:58):
and you know and those that usethem, you and then I saw it says
oh, you can get a 100-wattamplifier with it.

Speaker 1 (58:05):
So I put that on there too.
Oh my gosh, I was like this isgoing to be awesome.

Speaker 3 (58:09):
What did that final number come to?

Speaker 1 (58:11):
I don't know.
It was like what?

Speaker 3 (58:13):
three grand.

Speaker 1 (58:14):
Shy of three grand.
It was more like almost 5,000.
Oh wow, the whole thing.

Speaker 3 (58:26):
Like just the radio itself is like.
I think it's like 1700 orsomething.

Speaker 1 (58:29):
Yeah, it's crazy, but you know it's an american, it's
an american company and it's.
I've seen them in the field,I've seen people using them and
stuff and it's just cool becauseit's small and you could um, it
even comes with a little whipham radio antenna if you wanted
to use that.

Speaker 3 (58:45):
So so, but yeah, yeah , base start of what they call a
shack in a pack for their KXthree is 3,200.
Yeah, that's a flex dude,that's like a 6,400.

Speaker 1 (58:56):
Wow, no, I know, I said, if money wasn't an issue,
like if I hit the lottery, andand I was like I think I'm going
to go to California, I just gopick one up.
But obviously you can't do that.

Speaker 3 (59:10):
Well if you're going to shell out that much money,
you throw another $1,000 on it.
You could do probably anin-person tour of the factory
when you're out there.

Speaker 1 (59:19):
Yeah, so, yeah.
So I'm not getting an oil craft.
Um, okay, someone wants todonate one to me, I'd be glad to
take it off their hands.
But, um, yeah, so again I'm uh.
So I went back to the shackthing and that's like, okay, I
need to get this, but it's a lotof money, you know to, for a

(59:40):
monitor.
But my thought basis is, ifwe're going to keep doing this
podcast and I hate the way it isnow, so I don't come to the
shack as much as I probablyshould and if I had a nice clean
setup, I might be coming heremore and leave the radio on and
just be like, you know, if I seeit on, I could just start

(01:00:01):
getting on it.

Speaker 2 (01:00:01):
So I don't, don't you own a flex radio I was gonna
say right, delusion is a glanddrawer.

Speaker 3 (01:00:08):
At this point it's like dude, you, you've got all
of these right elements in frontof you, minus the big curved
screen, which I, from my vantagepoint, I don't think you're
going to get much more value outof it, except the fact that the
coolness factor of a 49 inchscreen, um, my, let's put it
this way in my it, if I put myit hat on that 49 inch screen,

(01:00:30):
you're going to probably getmore annoyed with it than you
are per se.
You know less annoyed withhaving four screens of you know
similar size, and the onlyreason why I say that is because
you know if you're used tohaving one window, the Snap 2
functionality on the 49-inchscreens, it takes a while to get
used to.
It's a challenge, it's fun.

(01:00:51):
What?

Speaker 1 (01:00:54):
are you talking about the Snap?

Speaker 3 (01:00:55):
So when you open up Windows now on your two screens,
if you open up one of them, itopens up fully on just that one
monitor and leaves the other onewherever you have it.
When you get into a 49 screen,it's like you go to click on it
and it goes and you've got likethis huge, like you know, wide
view, which is awesome if that'sthe only app you're going to

(01:01:16):
use.
But you know, if you don't usethat app and you want to still
see the apps behind it, you knowyou end up having to do the
window minimization and you know, and you know paul knows what
it's like and and that, hey, that's, you know, your own
flavor in terms.
I've sitting, I've sat in frontof them all the time for work
and I'm like I don't see thelike.
It's not like that much moreinteresting to have that big of

(01:01:39):
a screen.
I mean, most people'sresolutions are even like tinier
because they're trying to fitmore things on that one screen
instead of having multiplescreens so that that your
mileage may vary.
That's where you're going.
I'm totally fine with it.
Well again.

Speaker 1 (01:01:52):
See you can?
I'm not set on anything because, like I said, the goal is I
want to clean this up and I onlyhave.
I don't even know how big thesestupid screens are.
They're not very big.
Let's roll this in, go ahead.

Speaker 3 (01:02:06):
I think I know it's only 24 inches.

Speaker 2 (01:02:09):
I think it was maybe two and a half years ago.
I was talking with W1WRA abouthis big curved screen.
I think he's got a 50-inch.
He paid a ridiculous amount ofmoney for it, his big curved
screen.
I think he's got a 50 inch, um,and I mean, he paid a
ridiculous amount of money forit, but so it.
It piqued my curiosity and so,um, one of the family outings

(01:02:33):
the kid wanted to go to Best Buy, and so I was like, well, I'm
going to take this time to goplay with one of those screens
because they have displays setup.
And, uh, of those screensbecause they have displays set
up, and uh, I was playing withit and I was like this is
fucking awful.
Like I would, I would muchrather have three regular size
monitors mounted up on the wall,in in, in a, in a fashion where

(01:02:58):
they're, all you know,horizontally aligned and they're
all the same screen, then onegiant screen, because with three
screens I can use somethinglike I have, actual multiple
monitors, which is an opensource kind of software.

(01:03:20):
It's like power toys for Windows, yeah but it allows me to
configure the, the monitorlayout and the screensaver
layout and everything, so that, like when, when my computer goes
to sleep and I'm running ascreensaver, it'll it'll take
the whole thing rather thanbeing, you know, separate
independent on each monitor,it'll it'll stretch itself.

(01:03:43):
So that covers everything and Iand I can do that with other
programs as well.
But I love the fact that, likeyes, 100 I can.
I can maximize a web browser onone screen, I can maximize
discord on one screen, I canmaximize streaming software on
one screen and I can manageeverything in front of me

(01:04:06):
without it wanting to take upthe whole thing.
You know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (01:04:10):
Yeah, so how?
What size monitors do you havenow?

Speaker 2 (01:04:18):
uh, I would say I mean I, I got my monitors.
They were all donated to mefrom other people, but they're
probably 15 to 17-inch diagonal.

Speaker 3 (01:04:32):
Are they 17?
They're identical, aren't theylike 20?

Speaker 1 (01:04:37):
It might be 21-inch yeah.
I've got.
I think I've got.

Speaker 3 (01:04:43):
So we should take a step back from that.
I've got two, I think I've got,so I would.
We should take a step back fromthat.
Instead of I've got two, I'vegot two 24 inch.
So let me throw this way.
So, before we get into, like, the technical details and then
into the weeds what do you wantto operate?
Like what?
Yeah, what do you want to dofor operating position?
Like what?
What's your ultimate goals whenyou're sitting in front of that
computer Like what?
What's that look like for you?

Speaker 1 (01:05:06):
For me, All right.
So I want to have the flexrunning 24 seven.
Okay, so I can just I don'thave to turn it on set it up,
click everything, get it goingand just have it on a screen
with my log.

Speaker 2 (01:05:19):
Okay, right, so you've got the flex on one
screen, you got the logger onanother, and then you've got a
third screen where you can dowhatever else you want but I
only have two okay, so I have nomore place.

Speaker 1 (01:05:36):
I don't even know if my computer, your video card,
gets I'm going to be getting themac.

Speaker 3 (01:05:41):
I'm going to be getting the macbook, hopefully
whenever it comes out in thenext week or two well, when you
get into the macbooks at a wholenew animal, you're gonna have
to get a you know a graphics.
Yeah, I know, doc, that will dothat well, right, which I can
add screens to well, but thenkeep in mind so whatever you do
on your windows side is going tobe very different than your Mac

(01:06:01):
side.
So what's the ultimate?
Is the Mac going to become theprimary desktop for everything
and the Windows machine willtake backseat, or what?

Speaker 1 (01:06:13):
Well, I don't know how my Mac's going to work with
all this video stuff.
So, you said it's not going towork.
It will and Ryan says it willwork.
I didn't say it's not going towork it will and ryan says it
will work.

Speaker 3 (01:06:24):
I didn't say it's not going to work.
I said it's going to work.
It's just to be different andhow it handles it.
That's the it's it.
It does the same thing thewindows world does.
The windows world makes it alittle bit more complicated
because you know there's a lotmore levers you have to pull and
a lot more things to make itwork the right way.
The mac makes it a littleeasier because they developed it
a little differently and so, um, you know, for whatever

(01:06:47):
platform you play with, that'sgoing to dictate what you're
going to do.
So tell me, what like?
What do you?
What do you envision?
So when you're sitting in frontof this now, like I, when I did
my setup, I sat down in my headand visualized okay, big
monitor, I want to put my logger, the flex display, wsjtx, all

(01:07:10):
in one monitor.
And then I want to have that.

Speaker 1 (01:07:13):
That's what I want.
I can't do that on this littlemonitor that I have.
No, I mean I could, but I won'tbe able to see it.
I'm a little blind.
Okay, up close.

Speaker 3 (01:07:26):
So I definitely need a bigger monitor.
Basically, before we startbuilding your monitors, you
should get an eye appointmentand get that solved first.
It's coming in, becausewhatever we do is going to be
more difficult.
But anyway, yeah, okay, so saywe're past that stage.
Like Paul said, you know you'regoing to what do you figure out
what you want to do, most ofmeaning like you want your flex
up, you want your logger up, youwant to, you know, and you want

(01:07:48):
to do digital.
If those are the three thingsyou want up on your screen, then
you got to have a screen thatcan support three windows.
And then what are you going todo with that second monitor?
Is that going to be like foreverything else, like do in the
moment, or is it going to be forsome other function, like my,
my vertical monitor on my left.
That's just my obs stuff, that's just the whole entire obs

(01:08:10):
installation.
It always loads there, italways, you know, runs there,
and I don't put anything on thatmonitor except that because I
use all the features and have itall in a vertical orientation.
But that's what you're going tokind of think about.
Well, right, but that's whatyou got to kind of think about
well, right.

Speaker 1 (01:08:26):
Well, that's what.
Again, that's what you knowlike.
So right now I have when we dothe podcast, I use my stream
deck, I hit podcast andeverything pops up.
I got the main screen is streamyard, and then I've got obs and
I've got got the camera, because I have to adjust
everything through the cameraapp.

(01:08:47):
So I have those three going.
Now I have no more space to doanything else unless I open and
cover something up.

Speaker 3 (01:08:55):
Is that on one monitor or is that on both of
the monitors?

Speaker 1 (01:08:58):
No, it's on two.
Okay, it's on two, all right,so I don't have my Flex up and I
don't have anything to do.
Like you know how you guys geton and you're like, oh, I'm
going to look at this up or I'mgoing to look that up.
I'm always doing it either onmy phone or my iPad, so I'd like
to have a screen where, like inthe moment, oh, I'm going to

(01:09:22):
look this up right now and nothave to worry about everything
else.

Speaker 2 (01:09:25):
Here's a super fricking novel idea.
All right, before you go andbuy anything, right, I'm just
going to throw this out there.
Come to the, come to the mobilecommand center.
All right, sit here and andunderstand how I operate and how

(01:09:46):
I use what used to be threescreens is now down to two.
Then go to eric's shack and sitat his station and understand
how he works with what he's gotfor his screens, and then you'll
have a better idea of howexactly you want to lay out your

(01:10:08):
stuff, and then you'll know 100unequivocally.
All right, one huge monitor isgoing to do everything that I
want, and I'm going to be ableto segment it into the the
correct sizes, that I'm going tobe able to see what I'm looking
at and I'm going to be able tounderstand it, and I'll have all
the information outlaid infront of me.

(01:10:29):
Or, you know, is it going to bebetter having multiple monitors
all in a row, right?

Speaker 1 (01:10:39):
Right, well, and then here's the other thing.
So let's say I keep the windowsmachine for the podcasting
right and I do obs andeverything just on the windows
machine, but I use the mac, Iplug it into a dock and then I
have all my ham radio stuffminus the podcasting and
everything else.
So then I would need to have ascreen dedicated to that.

Speaker 2 (01:11:03):
I think so, if you're going to use your Mac primarily
as your video editing, and youknow if you're going to do live
streams or any of that from theMac, then you're going to have
to figure out exactly what youneed for additional monitors

(01:11:25):
connected to the Mac.
But the old girlfriend that youlove to hate, the old Windows,
bloated, fucking, fat girl right?
This is Jim.
What is it?
Wt1w?
He was the one that came up withthat analogy and I absolutely
love it because, yes, windows isthat fat, bloated girlfriend

(01:11:46):
that you just love and she'scomfortable, but God, she's got
a lot of extra weight.
That's Windows.
So play around with you knowboth sides of the house and see
okay, well, I'm going to use theMac specifically for this, this
and this, and so I need to beable to connect extra displays

(01:12:08):
that'll give me those options.
And then, when I'm on myWindows machine, I'm going to be
doing this, this and this, andso those displays have to also
be able to connect to theWindows machine to serve those
functions.
So that way you'redual-purposing and you're not
creating a setup for onespecific thing yeah, I would.

Speaker 3 (01:12:35):
I would even take it one step further, like if you're
if you're going mac which isfine, you can.
I would use the mac as my we'llsay, like your poda bag, like
it's a portable, like you're nottaking your dx10 and putting it
in a bag and using that as aI'm going to go out and do poda
all the time.
You have something lightweight, something very purpose built.
You know that mac is going tobe like you've been talking

(01:12:57):
about in the past.
It's going to be your videoediting device.
It's going to be like you knowthose types of things, but you
know it won't hit, they won'tlimit you from being able to
fire up your flex and play flexand wsjtx or anything from that
device.
But if you want something morelike, hey, it's like I look at
my workstation and paul saidprobably similar the same way,

(01:13:18):
it's like I have all of mywindows always situated so, even
when I get up from my chair andgo upstairs, do whatever I do
in my day, when I come back down, they're all there and so, like
, if I happen to see that thewaterfall is freaking super
active, I can, you know, justslide into my chair and start
playing with you know, whateverright that's, that's what I want

(01:13:38):
, cause I, like I said, I can't,I don't have enough space to
keep everything open.
Well, and keep in mind you don'thave to have full windows open
of, like your, you know, flex, because mine isn't.
Mine's a small little window,condensed window, and then I
have a condensed window of WSJTXright next to it and then I

(01:13:58):
have my logger all on the samescreen because I don't really
need to see all of my loggerdetails.
I don't need to see everycontact in my logger, I just
need to see a small littlesubsection of where I entered
the contact in and hit return.
Same thing with my waterfall.
I don't need to see 18 inchesof the lower waterfall of all
the past signals, I just need tosee the, the third upper half

(01:14:18):
and a few other features in it,and the same thing you know for
those types of apps.
So don't don't worry about.
Like you know, if you wantsimplicity and ease of use, then
having a couple monitors threeis probably fine to be able to
set up in your, you know yourshack that you know consists of
streaming and your ham radiostuff, then then that's fine.

(01:14:38):
But then I would leave the Macto doing all your video editing,
because you're probably goingto use that a hell of a lot more
when you're outdoors or, youknow, on the road or whatever,
um, and you don't need aexternal monitor setup, you know
, for that per se, you can getaway with one and have both the
max screen and an extended oneto be able to, you know, make
your desktop viewing experiencea little bit better yeah, I mean

(01:15:00):
you don't have to go crazy.

Speaker 2 (01:15:00):
So, from my experience, like just video
editing in in particular, right, because that's where you're
going to be using your mac, forfor me, with video editing, I am
primarily one single screen, where that is where my DaVinci
resolve resides.
But then on the second screen Ihave my web browser, because on

(01:15:25):
my web browser I'm going to lookup uh, you know, play phrase me
clips where I'm going to, I'mgoing to try and pull you know
some, uh, some movie clip thatyou know resonates with my video
, and so I'm going to, I'm goingto look up those things in that
second screen.
But that one primary screen issolely dedicated to editing in

(01:15:46):
that moment.
And then when I shift focus andI put the editing away and I
close all that software down andI'm doing radio things, and I
close all that software down andI'm doing radio things, that
one screen will be a dedicatedlike SDR feed from my radio
where I get the full waterfall, similar to like your Flex, you

(01:16:07):
know, kind of display, and I'llhave that on one screen and then
I'll have my logger on thesecond screen and then, you know
, I use the foot pedal and themic, so that way you know, I can
communicate and I can just type, and you know what I mean.
So I think I think what youreally got to do is is sit down
and start playing around withwhat do I really want, where and

(01:16:32):
how do I want this to beefficient for me?
Right, like that's, the keyquestion is how do I make this
efficient for me?

Speaker 3 (01:16:44):
right, know your workflow and then you can figure
out how to build the buildingblocks, get to whatever that
looks like.
I think I mean, if I don't, if Idon't go with the big, I think
I need a bigger screen, though Ithink that would probably solve
half my problems if I got athird screen, but it was bigger
than the 24 inches yeah, I mean, screen size is just whatever

(01:17:05):
you can afford basically thesedays, because you just throw a
third screen, whether it's in, Iwould say from an aesthetics
perspective, if that's yourthing, having three of the same
size screens across the boardmake it very easy to, you know,
not have to worry aboutdifferent sizes, like, but I
don't care that my monitor isvertical here, a 24 inch
vertical here, and my curvescreen's 32 inches and it's

(01:17:29):
horizontal, and then above thatI have a gap and a 50 inch
screen that you know I have to,you know, strain my neck to look
up at, but you know exactly, and so you know you just got to
kind of neck to look up at, butyou know exactly, and so you
know you just got to kind ofthink of that as, like, when
you're sitting in front of it,how you know what's best from
your viewing angle, when you'relooking left to right or up or
down, you know, and if you and Idon't have, like I said, this

(01:17:50):
desk.

Speaker 1 (01:17:50):
I don't have much like I don't have a lot of space
, so oh, you can well.

Speaker 3 (01:17:55):
I know you don't fit three screens.
I mean, paul's got less spacethan both of us combined and
he's scrimmed it in there but Ithink I'm going to have to get
in.

Speaker 1 (01:18:04):
I mean, I was, I'm going to have to get like
another screen mount.

Speaker 3 (01:18:07):
Yeah, you will.
The mount stuff is what you'regoing to have to hang your
screens off of.
He's already got the tapemeasure out, all right.

Speaker 2 (01:18:17):
I got four feet from front wall to back wall and then
hold on and then I got just shyof six feet.
So I got four by six.
Roughly you got plenty of space.

Speaker 3 (01:18:33):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (01:18:33):
This is the entire space that I have to work with,
and if I can do it, you can doit.

Speaker 3 (01:18:40):
You just need to figure out how to get mounted.

Speaker 1 (01:18:42):
I got six feet across From the side of my left side
of the desk to the window.

Speaker 3 (01:18:50):
it's about six feet, you could easily fit.
You said 24-inch screens.
You had Todd you could easilyfit one more 24-inch screen
going across horizontally.

Speaker 2 (01:18:59):
Yeah, it would have when I was, when I was at the
QTH, my my station, my studiosetup was was three.
Uh, apparently they're 23 inchscreens and that's what it was.
It was, and it works.
It works great.

Speaker 1 (01:19:15):
The other thing I could do.
The other thing I could dowould be I could get a bigger
screen, even, like you said, like a smaller curved one.
What's the purpose of having acurved one, is it just?

Speaker 3 (01:19:27):
a viewing angle.

Speaker 1 (01:19:27):
Dude, I really don't see it.

Speaker 3 (01:19:30):
Yes and no, but I don't see any difference between
that and a flat panel.
I mean, if you have a, so ifyour lighting scenario in your
house or the room you're in isreally like bright, then a
curved screen kind of helps thatbecause it knocks down a lot of
the extra glare.

Speaker 1 (01:19:44):
But if you're like already dimming the lights and
stuff like that, then thiscurved screen is not going to do
anything more except be agimmick so I'm thinking of like
having a main screen and thenmaybe have like a, a horizontal
and a vertical, or two or onelike the the bigger screen, to

(01:20:06):
have like all the ham radiostuff, like the flex and stuff
on it, or have the flex on theside ones and have the the
bigger screen so I can do likethe video editing or something
Well like like Tony Stark doeswhen he's editing in the middle
of the air, like his mainviewpoints right in front of him
, but all the other sides stuffis on the side of him.

Speaker 3 (01:20:27):
That's not important or needs his attention.
So that's kind of why I have mysetup.
That's like everything that Ineed to put my eyeballs.
Like Paul said when he did hisvideo editing main screen it's
only that screen.
Everything else is just kind oflittered on the other screens,
out of the way, you know, because he just needs to use it
for a brief moment and back toit same thing.
So you're not going to probablyput your flex and your logger

(01:20:48):
and all that stuff on the mainscreen because it's now
cluttering your main view.
You're sitting right in frontof it, so you're going to throw
it on the side screens.
So if you have you know themthe same view you can put on
either two screens on eitherside of you.

Speaker 1 (01:21:02):
You know those components so if you so, if you
had so, let's say this.
Let's say I'm doing, I have theflex on the side screen right
and I'm video and I I see thewaterfall and I want to use the
flex.
I would just then what?

Speaker 2 (01:21:14):
move it over, you want.

Speaker 1 (01:21:16):
You don't have to.

Speaker 3 (01:21:17):
Yep, so I keep forgetting.
My background is a perfectexample.
So see my main screen.
That's got like discord, that'sgot uh, my uh, wsjtx stuff and
I think that's.
Is that the curve?

Speaker 1 (01:21:30):
No, the one above it in the back, the one behind my
head, that curve that one, that's the curve one.

Speaker 3 (01:21:39):
I can see a discord there.
The 50 inches above it, yeah,so the screen that's here is
basically like I said, that'sall OBS, that's nothing else.
That's just a whole entirescreen of OBS.
The monitor that's behind me ismy main monitor.
I don't do anything that, nothing really sits there.
The big one, the one above me,the 50 inch, that's your main
one, the one that's in front ofmy face when I sit down in front

(01:22:02):
of it, is the, is the curvedone Curved one, and that's a
32-inch curved monitor.

Speaker 1 (01:22:11):
And what do you put on the big 50 one on the wall
there?

Speaker 3 (01:22:13):
So the big 50-inch has Discord.
It's got the Flex software.
It's got the flex software.
It's got the logger um andwsjtx that's really all that
sits up there.

Speaker 1 (01:22:27):
And now what happens if I, now you can't do, if I
keep the pc and the and theapple I can't use, I can't?
Can you turn the screens?
To which computer?
Or are they just stuck on onescreen Like per computer?

Speaker 3 (01:22:44):
Well, again it goes back to the fact like what do
you want as your home maincomputer?
Like you want the Mac or do youwant the window side?

Speaker 1 (01:22:51):
I kind of want the.

Speaker 3 (01:22:51):
Mac.
Okay, Well, so then two thingsare going to happen with the Mac
.
Is that if you get a MacBookPro, the Air is only going to be
able to support so manymonitors before it starts to
struggle to send its videooutput to it.
So you got to look into that.
So the MacBooks are awesome, but at the same time, they can

(01:23:12):
only support so many monitorsout of the box.
So many monitors out of the box.
And where you might have threemonitors at home on your Windows
PC, when you try to hook upyour Mac, you might only be able
to support one or two largerones.
Macs.

Speaker 1 (01:23:26):
But what if you have a docking station?
You can still only do.

Speaker 3 (01:23:29):
The docking station is only going to be as powerful
as the video output of the cardthat's in the computer.

Speaker 1 (01:23:37):
Now, if that's the case, wouldn't that then benefit
having that long, 49-inchcurved screen, because that
would be one monitor.

Speaker 3 (01:23:45):
That would be one monitor.
Yeah, I mean, but again it's adifferent operating style.
With one screen having all ofthose individual windowed apps,
it can be done.
There are people that do it allthe time.
I used to have a MacBook and Iused to have a spare monitor.
That was a 27-inch monitor andliterally I would do both.
I'd have applications that Ineeded on my Mac that it was

(01:24:08):
there because I was typing onthe keyboard in front of it than
any of the secondary stuffshows on the second screen.

Speaker 2 (01:24:14):
I don't know if you can see the picture I put behind
me here.
This is an old shack setup.
This was before I put themonitors all horizontal together
, where this way.
So I had that one being myvertical and that one was just

(01:24:35):
things that I wanted to see allthe time and that was it.
And so on the top you've gotSimon's world map and then there
you've got the grid trackerlookup window, because it just
made sense to put it on a sidewindow, whereas there you've got

(01:24:56):
the main grid tracker windowand then you've got WSJTX and
and the the call roster, and youknow that was.
It worked really, really wellfor what I was doing because I
was able to maximize the use ofthose monitors without having
them all be horizontal.

(01:25:17):
But eventually I I did takethat one which isn't it doesn't
fit in here, so it's not here, but but that is now in storage.
But that monitor eventuallyended up going horizontal in
this location right here, andthen it was just three screens,

(01:25:37):
you know, horizontally, and itworked in this location right
here, and then it was just threescreens horizontally.

Speaker 3 (01:25:43):
And it worked well.
But that goes back to the factthat he had three screens.
All of them were accessible viathe PC at any, being able to
drag through each of themonitors, but each of them
represented one large like whenyou clicked enlarge, so it goes
to full screen.
It stayed full screen, just onthat one, not on all of them
represented one large like whenyou clicked enlarge, so it goes
to full screen.
It stayed full screen just onthat one, not on all of them.

Speaker 1 (01:26:02):
Right, well, I got a lot of thinking to do.
You guys just made my decision.

Speaker 3 (01:26:09):
That's what we're here for.

Speaker 1 (01:26:10):
Either spend your money or you know it might be,
it might be more beneficial.
Maybe I won't lose, maybe Iwon't spend as much money, but I
really think I I have to find.
When I figure out what I wantto do, I got to figure out, I
got to get the right monitormount, because this thing I have
now it like clamps to the it,just I don't have enough space
to keep clamping stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:26:29):
Well, if you look at my setup, so like this monitor
or this, well, all right, thismonitor is on an anchor that's
tied to my shelf, so there's onepole there with an arm.
Then this monitor here, thismonitor has its own anchor and
its own arm, so they're all onseparate arms.

(01:26:50):
And that's the only way you canreally do that, because that
gives you the most versatilityto move it up or down, or left
or right, gives you the mostversatility to move it up or
down, or left or right.
Um, when you start to make itpermanent, like, uh, you know,
wall mount, then you reallylimit yourself on you know what,
what you can do for viewingangle which I mean, like for me
here in the rv, right like I, Iwould like to at some point

(01:27:11):
upgrade these monitors tomonitors that I can wall mount.

Speaker 2 (01:27:15):
But I'm a cheap bastard, like I live on a fixed
income and I don't like to spendmoney.
So at some point I'm going tofind a set of three monitors
that I can put on the wall andthen I'll put them on the wall
and they'll fit.
But on the desk, two is my max, like that's just I, you know, I

(01:27:38):
know I just don't have the realestate here, you know, and so
yeah, so 100, it's all aboutmaximizing the space that you
have available to suit yourneeds and knowing what I learned
where this conversation hasgone by, by the way, because,
like I mean, we started talkingabout, like, how this was going

(01:27:59):
to be, like the ham radio soupmixture of things that and I
mean, yeah, we're, we're, we're,we're all about monitors.

Speaker 3 (01:28:07):
You know what?

Speaker 2 (01:28:09):
It's an important conversation to have, so it's
great.

Speaker 3 (01:28:13):
Yeah, yeah, your operating position is going to
change too.
So whatever you come up withnow, you're going to be like, in
a year, three years time frame, get sick and tired of it, and
I'm like I'm already at thatstage now.
It's like this shelf that Ibuilt, that I have all this
extra space underneath, I havemy stream deck and my flex knob,
that's it.
And it's like I have all thisextra space and I fight my

(01:28:35):
camera because my camera isabove my head and so like I'm
gonna have to tear it all downand get it more lower, and so
I'm gonna have to go throughthat iteration too as well of
you know, okay, what am I gonnareposition?
Um, what can I gain?
What can I?
You know, what am I gonna lose?
That kind of stuff.
So, yeah, it's, it's a struggle, but it's fun, yeah well, the

(01:28:56):
the other thing that.

Speaker 1 (01:28:57):
So I had to do an amazon return today and I went
to staples because that was theclosest place to do it and if
the chair that I'm in now it'skind of cheap, I mean, it's just
one of those mesh you can'treally see.
It's like those mesh officechairs yeah, paul's downgraded.

Speaker 3 (01:29:16):
He hasn't gotten his real chair in there yet he did.

Speaker 1 (01:29:20):
I've got, like I've got.
I've got some back issues rightand I I, uh, so I felt, so I I
wanted to get like, uh, like youever sit in those gaming chairs
, I'm in one right now, likethey got.
Oh, is that where you have agaming chair?
Yeah, all right.

(01:29:40):
So I sat in this gaming chairbecause it was like right out
front and it had like the lumbarsupport, like this has lumbar,
not real like this thing was.
I said it.
I was like like if I sat inthis thing like I probably
wouldn't want to get up for awhile, this chair I'm constantly
I, I want to get up yeah, whatwas the chair you were looking
at?

Speaker 2 (01:29:59):
though about $400?
.

Speaker 1 (01:30:03):
No, it was normally like $300.
It's like $160.
It was like $200 off.

Speaker 3 (01:30:11):
Yeah, so I was like I started.
So I have an office chair, similar that that kind of mesh
back over there that I sit insix, eight hours a day doing
work and I suffer the same thing.
It's like my back starts tohurt, blah, blah, blah, and I
have to get up frequently.
Just keep the muscles, you know, in line.
This gaming chair, I onlybought it because it was a

(01:30:32):
little comfier.
But the problem is I built mydesks, uh, myself.
They're custom and they're notthe regular standard height of a
desk, which is like 36 inchesor 32 inches off the ground,
because I'm a big guy and Idon't like to have my knees
constantly hit the top of thedesk or whatever, and I want to
be able to have my chair slideunderneath the desk, no matter
what height they were, and so mydesk is a little bit higher

(01:30:56):
than an average height.
So my chair I had to find andthis is the only one I could
find that had the elevation toget it up high enough if I
really want to go up high enough.
But it's kind of one of thosethings that you just got to try
out because I went through threeor four chairs, the one my wife
sits in to my right of me isone of those office kind of

(01:31:16):
style chairs that has like the,the plush bottom and the you
know kind of pinned.
You know you know ornamentalkind of looking style chair but
you know it probably would have,uh, fit the bill too.
But you know she liked itbetter and she got access to it
well, the reason we got I gottwo of these chairs right.

Speaker 1 (01:31:35):
So diane said, well, we have to get matching chairs
for the because we share theoffice right like kind of like a
tea desk.
She's got the left side, I gotthe right side, and in the
middle there's like a thing inthe middle.
So she goes out and buysanother chair.
It doesn't.
It's white and brown, this isblack, and mesh throws the other
one downstairs that now Zachuses to play his video games in

(01:31:59):
or whatever.
So I'm like I thought we had tohave matching chairs, guess not
.
So keep in mind which are yougetting?

Speaker 3 (01:32:08):
She sits in it.
It's going to become hers, soyou might as well get a second
one, just to play it safe.

Speaker 1 (01:32:13):
No, she would never.
She'd be like that's ugly, butyou know this?

Speaker 2 (01:32:18):
No, she would never.
She'd be like that's ugly.
But this is my shack.
I don't care what it looks like, but you do because it's
driving you fucking nuts you do.

Speaker 1 (01:32:23):
I'm like you.
Just yeah, I do.
Well, I just want it to be likeit's just so cluttered right
now.
I got to clean it up.
So if I can figure out how toget monitors and clean it up and
be able to use it and, like Isaid, have a dedicated screen
for my flex, I think that would.
I think I need a third monitor.
I either need to get a big assone or a third one.

(01:32:45):
But what I'm thinking is I'dlike the third one to be a
little bit bigger than this.
So maybe have like one on eachside, maybe one one horizontal,
one vertical and then a biggerone in the middle.

Speaker 3 (01:32:57):
I mean, I spent probably before I built the
whole desk and everything elselike that and set up.
I sat in my chair visualizingwhat would my monitors look like
, how am I going to place stuff, and I know that's like overkill
, but in essence it kind of gotme thinking like, oh, I don't
have to go out and spend that 49, whatever the cost is for a

(01:33:17):
49-inch curved monitor.
I can get away with a 36-inchcurved monitor and a vertical
one that I already had instorage and you know the biggest
one.
Well, I think.

Speaker 1 (01:33:26):
I'm going to do what Paul did I'm going to go to Best
Buy and just look at it.
Go play with them.

Speaker 3 (01:33:30):
That's the best thing , my experience.
I didn't like them.
You know they just you knowthey don't offer the benefit.

Speaker 1 (01:33:37):
And then the other thing too is like these things,
like one is an HP and this one'sa Sceptre, yeah, two different
monitors, I don't know.
Yeah, I mean, but they're notlike HD, oh they're probably
Like they're not.

Speaker 3 (01:33:55):
You mean they're not 4K.

Speaker 1 (01:33:57):
Well, I don't know, they're just not as clear as
like.
I mean, they're better than mywork one, but like when I look
at my ipad or my phone, it'slike you know, crystal clear
yeah but this kind of annoyingyeah I feel your pain.

Speaker 2 (01:34:08):
all right, so the monitor that's directly in front
of me is not as clear, yeah, asthe monitor to my right.
It drives me nuts, but it iswhat it is.
I didn't pay a dime for thesemonitors and I don't, frankly,
have the money to go buy fuckingnew monitors.
I make do Sometimes, when yourbudget is the restriction,

(01:34:37):
you've got to make do.

Speaker 1 (01:34:42):
Well, if I was thinking about buying a $1,200
monitor and I only need to buy asmaller one, I think I could
probably afford to throw alittle extra cash at a 4K
monitor that I'll be likely tostare at, If you time it just
right.

Speaker 3 (01:34:56):
You probably could get all of the same manufacturer
, model, you know, size, screenthat are all the same, based off
of the same resolution you wantfor all the same, and replace
all three at the same time andyou'll get better.
You get everything you want, everything will check the boxes
because you have all the samemonitors, they're all the same
resolution, they're all the sameconfiguration and you'll have

(01:35:22):
your experience that much betterversus just trying to buy one
from this vendor, one from thatvendor, because all of them do
very differently, all of themhave the same specs.
But, like paul said, his twodifferent monitors.
There are two different vendors.

Speaker 1 (01:35:28):
I'm sure, actually they're both hp that's oh okay
so well, it's just yeah so hp isa lot like Dell One's,
considerably older, they justfind the cheapest manufacturer.

Speaker 3 (01:35:38):
Yeah Well, they'll find this Right.

Speaker 1 (01:35:41):
So, like I can't tell which one is clear, the Scepter
thing or the HP, like, the HPis the one I use as, like the
main monitor that I'm alwayspulling, it's got my camera on
it and like everything, but Ithe one thing you get into
monitors is you have to deal, you have to understand, like the
technology, refresh rate, youknow how many nits it does what,

(01:36:03):
what outputs it has that itwill accept in and display ports
.

Speaker 3 (01:36:07):
Always a better output or input than, say, hdmi,
you know, does it?
Or bj or dvi yeah, if you canstill find those monitors today.
But yeah, if you have those, yeah, those are definitely
analog.
So the reason why you'reprobably dealing with the
weirdness is probably VGA.
Vga is not a digital mode andyour computer's probably putting

(01:36:29):
out digital going.
Hey idiot, I'm having todownscale because your monitor
says I don't want to accept this.

Speaker 1 (01:36:37):
Well, next time you come over, eric, you can see
what I have.
Maybe you can tell me the specsto buy to make my computer,
because this computer is goodexcept it won't download the
goddamn driver that I'm tryingto do for the DAX Quadcopter.
Yeah, that's why I hate Windows.
I seriously would get rid of itIf I could.

(01:36:59):
If Mac wasn't so expensive, I'dget like the you know, the Mac
pro tower, that would you know.
But they're like ridiculouslyexpensive, like four grand.
I ain't paying four grand for acomputer.

Speaker 3 (01:37:12):
We always say sir, here is a check with my name on
it.
Write down any number on thispiece of paper and I will pay it
.
Yep.

Speaker 1 (01:37:21):
Yeah, well, alright, enough with my monitors.
I will figure it out.
I'm going to take you guys out.
I'm going to go see Paul'smobile.

Speaker 2 (01:37:34):
GMC.

Speaker 1 (01:37:37):
The Grouch Mobile Command and I'll check Eric's.
I've been to his shack before, but just check it out again
because I probably was there notreally paying attention to how
it was all set up.

Speaker 2 (01:37:47):
Sit in the chair, look at the screens, look at the
way that he's got it set up andsee how it works for you.
Learn vicariously throughothers first before you spend,
see how it works for you.

Speaker 3 (01:37:57):
Same with Paul.
Yeah, all right.
Learn vicariously throughothers first, before you spend a
single dime, because you'reprobably going to do all.
Of you'll make all the samemistakes that Paul and I have
made.
And who?

Speaker 1 (01:38:07):
knows, maybe I'll get this MacBook and I'll just use
it as a laptop.

Speaker 3 (01:38:13):
My feeling and gut instinct is that that is going
to be what that MacBook is toyou, because you've always been
saying it's like dude, I sit incourt for five hours, I have
nothing else to do.
That's what you're going to bedoing for video editing.
Now, the other side of it islike actually having you create
content so you can edit on thatMacBook.
But we'll get you towards that.
I'm not worried about that, I'mdoing it.

Speaker 1 (01:38:35):
Oh my God, I don't like my snowboard video.

Speaker 3 (01:38:38):
I've totally yeah, I know he's got content, but he's
going to get to the same placePaul and I got to.
It's like you put a few videosout and then you go, oh, I'm
going to sit back and relax, andthen you're.
You know, then you get intopanic mode of like crap.
I got to put more content out.
Now I have to create, which isalways another challenge.

Speaker 1 (01:38:55):
I'm still trying to learn how to video edit and I I
I got that uh art list IO, whichI love.
It's got split.
There's so much, you know.
I could spend hours and hourslooking for music.

Speaker 3 (01:39:08):
Paul has a separate browser window, like I do.
It's like I bounce between allmy apps that I need to download.
It's like oh, I have download.
It's like, oh, I have a perfectclip that I could rip off, and
then I spend the goose chasetrying to find the perfect clip
for that five seconds that Iwant to capture to make a
message, you know be funny orhumorous or whatever.

Speaker 2 (01:39:26):
Yeah, or, or you, you get to where, where I'm at,
where you know like I'll be like, okay, I just made a really
awesome video, well, now I needa music track for it.
And so then I got I got davinci up on one screen and I got
I got suno up on another andI'm like, all right, these are
my lyrics.
Okay, yeah, oh, this is great, all right, render, give me, give

(01:39:50):
me some good stuff, and it'llbe like some twangy, freaking
god awful, like blue, blue grassfor the music to my lyrics.

Speaker 1 (01:39:59):
And I'm like, no, that's not it, and we just keep
going over and over and overuntil I get what I want four
hours later it's exactly what itis and I'm gonna have to have
to bring my headphones in andI'll be uh, I'll be on on the
phone going through and tryingto find a track dude, we will

(01:40:20):
suffer with you right there andwe laugh at the same time going
yeah, we've been down thoseroads, we still go down those
roads, uh, yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:40:30):
So yeah, it sounds like you got some good stuff,
but I guess from takeaway.
So if someone wants to learnanything out of all this kind of
escapade, it's like you know, take a little time, especially
once you you know, because wedid our shack roast a long time
ago and we saw a few shacks thatwere, we'll say, in their
infancy stages.
They weren't, they weren'tanything more than a TV tray
kind of thing, or on a smalllittle workbench kind of stuff.

(01:40:51):
But it Now, like you might beat this stage where Todd's at
like, how do I make my shackbetter?
Well, you know, take some time.
See other stuff, like we've allmentioned here.
You know, get some opinions, ask around, but don't buy
anything immediately because youprobably will have buyer's
remorse and send shit back allthe time to you know, until you
find what you need.

Speaker 1 (01:41:10):
Yeah, and I've been.
This has been like somethingI've been going through my head
for months.
This hasn't been like.
I've been going through my headfor months.
This hasn't been like oh, Ithink I need a new screen.
The other thing within my shackthat I have a problem with is
lighting.
Oh, yeah, right, so I don'tknow what kind of light I need
to that I can do the podcast andhave good lighting for that,

(01:41:34):
but also be able to work at mycomputer or, you know, do the
flex and just have decent light.

Speaker 3 (01:41:40):
That's a whole like two different things right there
.

Speaker 1 (01:41:43):
Regular lighting, I know, but like so I thought this
light over the computers waskind of a cool thing.
It's like this arm, I can bendit, it opens up, it covers
almost the whole wave.
It's got all these, it's got aremote control.
I can just change the thethings and then it's like, nope,
this isn't really.
I mean, it helps, but it's notwhat I need now.

Speaker 2 (01:42:02):
So with lighting, that's the other thing, um.
So I I battled lighting issueshardcore at the house, um, and
it got to the point where I, I,I, I would, I would put my green
screen up and then I had, um,they were, they were um for

(01:42:23):
chickens, right, baby chickens.
So it's the, the aluminum rounddish that goes around a
floodlight, right.
So I had two of those and, oh,diffuser Well yeah, but so it
was, actually.
It was a little too bright.
And, oh, diffuser well yeah, but so it was.
Actually it was a little toobright.
And so what I, what I ended updoing, was I I put, uh, pieces
of computer paper over the frontof them to to just kind of mask

(01:42:46):
the light a little bit, so thatI had, I had plenty of ambient
light coming down on me.
But then I also needed a lightover the camera, right, right,
you can see it on my hand, thelight.
So I have a light over thecamera which shines on my face
and lights the front of me.
But so, yeah, so you just gotto figure out for your space,

(01:43:12):
how do you get good lighting onyour green screen behind you, or
not green screen behind you, asin your case, right, but you
got to make sure that the lightin front of you is behind the
camera, and that's where thosethose stupid fucking ring lights
like they work.

(01:43:34):
And they work because they'rethey're recessed just ever so
slightly behind the camera, andso the light doesn't interfere
with the aperture of the camera, but it lights you.

Speaker 3 (01:43:48):
Well, and there's a perfect example.
What's a ring light?
Exactly that it's a circle,it's light and a hole in the
middle.

Speaker 1 (01:43:57):
But where do you mount it?
See, that's the other thing.
Where do I mount all this stuff?
Because my shack, my desk, where all these is right in
front of a window, yep, which isa challenge.
So there's no, there's no wallthere, it's just a window.
And that's where my coax.

Speaker 3 (01:44:11):
Remember how I was mentioning how you should get
all of those like bolting racksthat, like you know, it's
basically like an h frame thathas an adjustable bar that you
can attach stuff to that sitsbehind your monitors.
That's what you probably want tostart looking into something
that's going to obviously holdyour monitors but at the same
time, also allows you to stick, like.
If you look at my picture backhere, you see that there's the,

(01:44:33):
there's the little ball, thatlittle ball here, that, yeah,
that is the light that fits mein the face, but you can see how
it's actually causing shadowshere now because it's not
directly behind the camera andso, like that affects, like,
your video background and allthe other stuff you get
artifacting.
Like you can start to see alittle bit of holes here, and
every once in a while, becausethe video card is trying to

(01:44:55):
compensate, whereas Paul ispretty, like, solid, like.
And every once in a whilebecause the video card's trying
to compensate, whereas Paul'spretty solid, he's got a
consistent lighting schedule.
So I'm still dicking aroundwith light and I've been doing
that two years now and I stillhaven't got it down to 100%.
I look very washed out tonight, but get your setup first and
then you're going to have to addlights after that, because
that's going to be a challengein and of its own, to figure out

(01:45:17):
.

Speaker 2 (01:45:19):
So this rack thing thing, this thing would be
behind my desk, bolts the deskyeah, or you know, um, even the
the thing that I got my kid forchristmas actually was was
really cool.
It was a kit where the lightscame with tripods and so you can
, you can, you can put the, thelights with their separate
tripods in behind your desk.

(01:45:39):
Um, the, the specific ones thatI bought, were vertical, um,
you know, rectangular lights, but then he's got like different
filters that he can put in thelights and he could change kind
of the color scheme and and thatkind of stuff.
But there's a million optionsthat are ready to go out of the

(01:46:01):
box with lighting.
You know, you don't necessarilyhave to get a ring light.
It was just, you know, it'sjust the concept, right, but you
want the lighting behind yourcamera, so that way, none of the
light messes with the apertureof the camera.

Speaker 3 (01:46:22):
Yep, got it.
Yeah, it's a whole new animal,so don't put the car before the
horse.

Speaker 2 (01:46:28):
Get your operating position comfortable first, and
then go from there, yeah, andthen do that, yep.

Speaker 3 (01:46:35):
Yeah, because things change, season change, lighting,
lighting changes, all that kindof plays into it for, for all
the listeners and the watchers.

Speaker 2 (01:46:44):
Uh, now you've got inside the scoop on how us ham
tubers do what we do yep, yeah,it's not an easy job, guys.

Speaker 3 (01:46:57):
We have to look this pretty all the time.
I don't know about you.
It certainly wasn't, as easy.

Speaker 2 (01:47:02):
as you know, like my kid made it out to be, he's like
oh, I'm going to be a ham tuberand you know, like I'm going to
make all kinds of content videogame content and it's going to
be great.
And I was like, ah, yeah, Idon't know that.

Speaker 3 (01:47:14):
you really know what the hell you're getting into but
if we only had it all writtenout at the beginning, would we
all still dive into the deep endof the pool?
Probably not.
But okay, well, you know, likeI said, we, we did this good,
good episode.
Uh, you know, even though, uh,I don't know where it was kind

(01:47:35):
of taken us, but it helped Todd,at least hopefully.
And yeah, well, you told me to,even though I don't know where
it was kind of taking us, but ithelped Todd, at least hopefully
.
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:47:40):
Well, you told me to start, I took over the whole
podcast.
But hey, I got some betterideas now.
I got now more stuff to look atand to review.
I'm going to do some fieldtrips to the Grouch Command and
to Eric Schack and to Best Buyjust to kind of get a feel of
what's out there, and we'll dosomething.

Speaker 3 (01:48:00):
Yeah, and you know, hey, if you, you know, we'll
take this to discord, as usualonce the episode airs here.
So, um, you know, feel free tochime in.
Let us know what you, you know, you know, if you maybe do your
own ham tube, you know you're aham tuber yourself throw in some
of your you know, your tips andtricks.
But if you even just got yourregular shack set up and you've
gone through some of thesetrials and tribulations, share

(01:48:22):
them with us.
We want to see what we canlearn, and maybe I can
definitely learn something, because I'm always curious to
see how people do their setupsand I always get a little nugget
of something out of them.
I do that with Paul.
Every time I sneak over to hisgarage command center.
I'm just like, how did he dothat?
And like, and I'm like I got tothink about that now.
So you know, we play off eachother all the time.
It's good, ham's helping ham, cool, yep, Roger, that Any other

(01:48:47):
last minutes we want to throwin there before we kind of wrap
this up and put a bow on it.
Okay, all right.

Speaker 2 (01:48:59):
Well, I all right.
Well, sounds good to me, I'll,I'll.
I'll leave some pearls ofwisdom with our, with our
audience, right, listen, none ofthis shit is cheap.
So, before you spend any money, try and find somebody that you
can.
You can test, or you can testin the store, or, you know, you
can sit in front of differentsetups and understand what you

(01:49:23):
like and what you don't like, because, ultimately, your
comfort is what matters, right, and so it doesn't matter what
your shack is capable of.
If you're comfortable using it,then you're going to use it.
If, if you're not comfortableusing it, you're going to be
like yeah, no, I don't reallyfeel like it, you're just not

(01:49:45):
going to play with it.

Speaker 3 (01:49:46):
Exactly.

Speaker 2 (01:49:48):
Play around, use other people's stuff.
Don't be afraid to ask somebodyelse.
Hey, you're in my area and Inotice that you've got a decent
setup, what you think is decent.
So you know, would you mind, could I come and see what your
shack looks like?
More often than not, the ham'sgoing to go.

(01:50:09):
Yeah, alright, come on over.
You know Absolutely.
I mean, you want to come seewhat grouch command is like and
you're up in the southern NewHampshire area?
Send me a message.
100%, I'll be here, doors open.

Speaker 3 (01:50:25):
I'll even have a cold beer waiting for you word
choice by for sure, and uh, youknow, hey know that it's a
process.
That's really basically thebottom line is whatever you put
in today is not going to be thesame in five years.

As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
