Speaker 1 (00:01):
Hi everyone and welcome back to Live Parkinson's
Live an Exceptional Life.
I'm so glad you're here with metoday for week four of our
special Parkinson's AwarenessMonth series.
Over the last three episodeswe've explored exercise,

(00:23):
nutrition and the power ofpositivity.
If you missed any of those, besure to go back and check them
out.
Today we're wrapping up theseries with a topic that is
often overlooked, but it may beone of the most important of all
social interaction andcommunity.
So why does social connectionmatter?
Well, let's face it, livingwith Parkinson's can sometimes

(00:45):
feel isolating.
The physical symptoms, theemotional toll, the constant
adjustments they can make iteasier to retreat than reach out
.
But here's the truth Humanconnection is essential to your
well-being physically, mentallyand emotionally.
In fact, research shows thatsocial isolation increases the
risk of depression, cognitivedecline and even worsens

(01:08):
physical symptoms in Parkinson's.
On the other hand, people whostay socially active tend to
have better emotional health, stronger immune systems and even
improve motor function.
So what does social supportlook like Now?
Social connection doesn't haveto mean having a giant circle of
friends or being out everynight of the week.

(01:29):
It can be as simple as talkingwith a close friend or family
member, regularly attending asupport group, either in person
or online, joining a fitnessclass specifically for people
with Parkinson's, orvolunteering, mentoring or just
meeting a neighbor for coffee.
If you have a special skill, help mentor someone or volunteer

(01:51):
.
You're not only helpingyourself, but you're helping
someone else.
But what matters is authenticconnection feeling seen, heard
and supported by others who care.
Let's talk about the communityeffect.
One of the biggest shifts Imade in my Parkinson's journey
was leaning into communityinstead of trying to go it alone
.
I joined support groups.

(02:12):
I connected with others livingwith Parkinson's and even began
creating content like thispodcast to foster those
connections.
It helped me stay accountablewith my health and it reminded
me that I'm not alone, andneither are you.
So let's talk about how to getstarted.
If you're not sure where tostart, here are a few ideas.
Look for local Parkinson'ssupport groups through your

(02:35):
local hospital or Parkinson'sFoundation.
Check out Parkinson's-specificfitness programs like Pedaling
for Parkinson's or Rock SteadyBoxing.
Join online forums or Facebookgroups dedicated to Parkinson's.
Reach out to someone else youknow living with PD, even just
to talk, and if you're acaregiver, connect with other

(02:57):
caregivers too.
They need support just as muchas you do.
So your challenge this week.
Now here's a gentle nudge Reachout to one person, Call a
friend, join a class, send amessage, just take that one step
toward connection.
You might be surprised how goodit feels.

(03:20):
Conversation and this specialParkinson's Awareness Month
series.
I want to leave you with this.
You were never meant to walkthis journey alone.
Connection is not just anice-to-have, it's a lifeline.
It strengthens your mind, liftsyour spirit and even supports
your body's ability to fightback against Parkinson's.
So today I encourage you totake that one small step toward

(03:42):
building or deepening yourcommunity.
Whether it's a simple phonecall, joining a new group or
even just introducing yourselfto someone new, you never know
what new strength, hope andfriendship might be waiting on
the other side.
I know I've met some greatfriends just by going up and
introducing myself.
