(00:15):
Well, welcome to the live Shootpodcast.
My name is Jeff Dolan and I'vebeen a licensed firearm doer for
the last 18 years.
In this podcast, we talk about.
All things related to the SecondAmendment, as well as anything
else going in the world ofsports story or anything else I
might find interesting.
So yes, this is the podcastwhere we cut through noise,
stand up for our God givenrights, and talk about what
keeps us free.
The Second Amendment.
(00:35):
Today we're gonna dive into atopic that's got a lot of people
buzzing.
We mentioned it last week butthat's a, a six hour P three 20
and the safety concerns thathave been going on.
We're gonna talk about, youknow, the background of the gun
military contracts reportissues, how law enforcement and
military are responding and whatSIG Power has to say.
So, so let's get started.
(00:56):
So the P three 20 released in2014 by sig.
It's a striker fired modularhandgun.
It hit the market with a lot ofpopularity.
Over 2.5 million units have beensold, but.
The P three 20 started makingwaves in 2017 when it won the US
Army's Modular Handgun Systemcompetition being at Glock and
(01:18):
others For a$580 millioncontract, the Army adopted the
two versions of M 17, which isfull size and the compact M 18.
And these became the firestandard firearms across all
branches of the US military.
From military police to pilots, you'll see these pistols on
belts and chest res and acrossthe world.
Law enforcement jumped on boardtoo with over thousands of
(01:40):
agencies.
Started to use P three 20 totheir issuing P three 20 to
their officers.
But this is when things gotstart to get sticky.
Since it's released reports ofsurface of at the P three 20,
discharging without triggerpool, something nobody wants to
have happen.
The safety concerns startedgaining traction around 2017.
Right after the militarycontract was announced, a US
(02:02):
Department of Defense reportfrom the year noted that during
testing the P three 20 couldfire if dropped at certain
angles.
And that can be a problem ifit's your duty weapons.
Six hours responded quicklymodifying the trigger mechanism
and officer, you know, avoluntary upgrade to civilian
owners.
They claim the issue was fixed, but the reports kept coming in a
(02:23):
2020 investigation documentedover 80 entries from the alleged
un commanded discharge.
And.
Court cases started piling upover a hundred losses, alleging
that the P three 20 design isdefective particularly because
it lacks external safety likesome other strike of hard
pistols such as Glock.
In June, July, 2025, a juryruled against SIG and awarded
(02:46):
them 2.35 million to a plaintiffwho's P three 20 fired while
unholstered citing a defect.
Then in November, a Philadelphiajury hit SIG with an$11 million
verdict for an Army veteraninjured when his P three 20 went
off in his jacket.
Jacket.
So, so how has law enforcementbeen responding?
(03:06):
Well, it's been a mixed bag.
Several police departments havepulled the P three 20 from
service.
We're talking big names likeMilwaukee, Dallas the Transit
Police in Philly.
Philly and agencies in Alabama,Connecticut, Florida, Texas,
Washington, Wisconsin.
On the federal side, things evengot heated in July, 2025 when
ICE issued a memo banning the Pthree 20 and ordering a, a
(03:29):
switch to the Glock 19.
This came after a 2020 ICEreport noted a spike in
unintentional discharge afteradopting the P three 20 with 12
incidents and seven injuries injust 18 months.
The US Army's global StrikeForce also halted the use of the
M 18 citing safety concernsafter a transit.
Tragic incident went on a FeWarren Air Force Base in Wyoming
(03:52):
where an airman Braden Lun losthis life to win a P three 20
discharge.
The Air Force is now inspectingtheir entire M 18 arsenal, the
Army who, spearhead the, the Pthree 20, though isn't budging
despite the 2024 FBI ballisticsresource facility re, FBI
(04:12):
research facility report thatjust started becoming public
raising concerns that the M 18striker safety lock and SR wear,
the Army says they're standingby their pistols.
They argue the FB i's findings.
Couldn't be consistentlyreproduced and following up.
Test with Sig.
Meanwhile, the Michigan StatePolice, after initially raising
concerns, have resumed issuingtheir P three 20 testing, showed
(04:37):
no stances.
So the split, you know, responsetells me one thing, there's a
trust issue.
Some agencies are jumping ship, others are doubling down, you
know.
For me, this type ofinconsistency isn't good.
Now what sig say, well, they'vebeen pretty vocal.
They're not backing down theirstance.
(04:57):
The P three 20 is safe, period.
They say it cannot, under anycircumstance, discharge without
a trigger pull.
They pointed to rigorous testingby the US military, federal, and
state, and law enforcement andindependent labs, all of which
they claim proved the P threetwenty's reliability.
SIGs even released videosbreaking down the pistol.
Safety features like the triggersafety make ahead of them and
(05:18):
the prevent discharge unless youknow the triggers deliberate.
Pool.
They argue that many reportincidents are due to user error
and proper hol string nagging ongear.
Failure to follow proper, safehandling procedures.
SIGs also quick to note that theunintentional, unintentional
discharge happen with allfirearms, not just P three 20.
(05:39):
So now they're throwingeverybody under the bus, right?
They've had legal wins.
12 federal lawsuits claiming theP three 20 can fire without a
trigger pull, have beendismissed, including one by a
unanimous, unanimous eightperson jury.
But this is where I get setskeptic, SIGs pushing, you know,
hard on the user error angleand.
While I agree, there's trainingand discipline are critical, the
(06:01):
volume of accidents, especiallywith trained professionals,
seems to suggest that there'smore to it.
The FBI report obtained by ashooting influence pointed to
specific issues like an unseatedstriker safety lock spring and
warm sewages.
That's technical stuff, but itcould explain why some guns
(06:21):
might fire under stress, likeone officers running or drawing
from the holster.
Sig said they've worked with theFBI and Michigan State Police
and are following up testsshowing no problems.
So where does that leave SIG?
Well, it, you know, the P three20 is innovative.
And it's trusted by thousands.
(06:42):
These, but these safetyconcerns, in my opinion, cannot
be res ignored.
SIGs got a responsibility tokeep pushing transparency,
releasing all the testing data, not just the highlights.
They need to prioritize trainingwith agencies and that the, safe
handling and continue to beaccountable.
The controversy's far, far over, but one thing's clear.
(07:04):
Our freedom to bear arms comeswith the responsibility to
demand the best from those tome, I wouldn't be buying a P
three 20 right now.
I know people love it.
People have tons of them.
Sit back because you know, oneof the most important things
about a gun for me is that whenyou pull the trigger, it goes
bang.
And when you don't pull thetrigger, it doesn't go bang.
(07:24):
Those are the two main things.
You can talk about externalsafeties and all that, but your
number one safety is yourtrigger, your finger, and it can
fire without using that.
Those are concerns.
So we're gonna keep watching, you know SIGs not backing down
and, but the story's not goingaway either.
So if you haven't subscribed tothis podcast send me a message.
(07:46):
Tell me what you think.
Tell me what you think of your Pthree 20.
Love to hear about it.
And if not, have a safe shootingand have a great weekend.
