SPEAKER_00 (00:15):
Aloha.
Today's episode is sponsored bythe Livestock Extension Group
out of the University of Hawaii,Manoa College of Tropical
Agriculture and HumanResilience, the Center for Ag
Profitability out of theUniversity of Nebraska Lincoln.
SPEAKER_01 (00:28):
Aloha, and welcome
to the Livestock Fala Ow, a
podcast aimed to provideeducational support,
information, guidance, andoutreach to livestock
stakeholders in Hawaii and therest of the U.S.
We are your hosts, Mele Oshiroand Shannon Sand.
And today we're going to talk alittle bit about what's going on
this month in our mini episode.
(00:48):
And I think we'll start withsome of our Hawaii program
updates.
So we just recently completed anonline webinar series hosted by
extension agent YunwenBostamanti, who is based in Oahu
County, focused on poultrybasics for backyard production.
And any of our really ourpoultry producers out there
(01:11):
covering some topics aboutpoultry health and disease,
selling eggs and food safety, chickens in your garden and
environment.
Our guest speaker, Dr.
Gregory Archer from Texas AMUniversity, was there to give us
great information.
He's a poultry specialistspecialist with them.
And it was a great time for usto really talk story about
(01:34):
certain things regarding poultryhealth and husbandry and
everything else under theumbrella for them.
But the recordings are nowavailable on the UHC Tar
Livestock Extension GroupYouTube channel.
So there's three different uhseries or parts, I should say,
from that series.
So go check it out.
Um and you could reach out toUnivastamanti if you have any
(01:56):
questions about the webinarseries.
Uh this month, uh, we are alsohosting another series online,
and it is in work safeguardingHawaii swine and building
biosecurity and for an animaldisease preparedness across our
island systems.
We hosted the first webinarseries of this five-part and
(02:17):
talked about the sort ofintroduction to the program,
what the grant is about, andreally what we are looking
forward to in sharing in thedifferent next four series that
are parts of this webinarseries.
And one of the things that Iwanted to share about the grant
is that we do have a portion ofit that we are looking for
producer participation in it.
(02:40):
And really the res sort ofexpectations if you want to
produce, uh uh participate, youknow, directly with the program,
it's to help producers sort ofbuild animal health support with
them, uh, looking at differentthings as far as establishing a
VCPR and having more access toveterinary services and
(03:01):
resources that are out therewith the participation.
If a producer wants toparticipate directly with the
program, there are someresponsibilities or things that
we kind of have expectationsfor.
And part of it is just to attendthe five-part webinar series
that's going to be offeredonline.
Um, and second is to participatein some on-form visits and the
(03:22):
in-person workshops that's goingto be conducted next year, early
part next year.
So it's, I think it's I feellike it's a great opportunity
for producers that want, youknow, sort of to make
connections with veterinarians.
There are two veterinaries thatare part of our project team,
Dr.
Gabriella and Dr.
Thomas Petsnick.
And Dr.
Thomas Petsnik has worked umwith producers here in the
(03:45):
States.
He's a swine specialist.
SPEAKER_00 (03:47):
I think we've had
him on here before, haven't we?
SPEAKER_01 (03:49):
Yes, he's been on
his podcast.
Yeah, podcast before.
Um, he's actually in Nebraska.
That's where he's um hispractice is, but he is licensed
to practice in Hawaii as welland has worked here as well as
in the Pacific Islands on manyprojects with other extension
specialists and agents in thepast.
So he's quite familiar with umthe Hawaii system and industry
(04:09):
here.
So it's an opportunity to beable to meet with him and you
know have a herd evaluation donenext year as part of a
participating producer, you'llhave access to those types of
things.
So I will link more informationabout how you can participate in
that project.
Um, if you are a producer thatwants that's interested, um, and
(04:29):
you can always contact myself aswell for more information.
And Yunowin Bastamanti isanother um co co-investigator on
this project.
So she's on Oahu.
So for those that want to get incontact with her, you can also
reach out to her.
Um, and if there's producersthat want to meet with us
one-on-one in regards to theproject and sort of what it all
(04:51):
entails, you're more thanwelcome to reach out to us and
we can set up a time to meet.
So, as I mentioned, it's afive-part webinar series.
We have completed the first partand it was just an introduction,
really an overview of theproject, and we'll post a link
to the presentation that wasgiven on that so you can review
that as well and someinformation about how you can
(05:11):
sign up to be a producer thatparticipates directly with the
project.
So we have four more parts tothe series.
Um, the next, and it's gonna beevery Wednesday in October from
5 to 7 p.m.
Hawaii time.
Uh, there's different topicsevery night, and it's sort of
gonna be an informational onewhere we talk about the topics
and the different things thatyou need to put together a
(05:33):
biosecurity plan, uh, securepork supply plan, and really the
end is uh last webinar series isthe U.S.
SHIP Um Program, which is theU.S.
swine health improvement plan.
So if anybody's familiar withthe poultry improvement plan,
which they have, the NPIP, it'sa you know, sort of a process
where you go through to ensureum the safety of the
(05:57):
transportation of um pork andwhatnot through the state.
So yeah, is it it's gonna be awork through webinar series in a
sense, because e differentwebinar series is a different
sort of information that weprovide for you and then help
you work through whatever papersor programs that you need to get
to be able to use those, usethat information.
So I will post more informationabout that for sure in our
(06:20):
description um for this episode.
Uh looking forward to this.
I think it's a a greatopportunity for us to share and
bring some expertise in.
Uh, Dr.
Gabriella Sai, who is our otherproject team member on this, is
based in Oahu as well.
So she is a local resource thatwill continue to be able to help
with our hog producers in thestate.
(06:40):
And lastly, I think I have isthe Hawaii Cattlemen's Council
2025 convention and annualmeetings going to take place at
the Marriott Wyalea Beach Resorton Maui, November 13th to the
15th.
Uh, so if you have notregistered and you are uh
wanting to work more with thecattlemen and whatnot and learn
more about some of the um beefinformation that's out there.
(07:03):
We do they have cattlemen'scollege on the first day, which
a lot of informationaleducational um presentations,
and they will have a workshopthat precedes the conference on
the Thursday before.
So uh that will have some livedemonstrations.
But I believe their registrationis still open.
So go check it out.
We'll put the links for thatthere.
(07:23):
And I one more thing, I guessthere is also a reminder from um
now called the Department ofAgriculture and Biosecurity.
Instead of Department of AG,they are uh DAB, right?
Department of Ag andBiosecurity.
Um, just reminding livestockowners that they must
re-register their brands betweenSeptember 1st and December 31st
(07:44):
of this year, and that helps toprotect their rights to their
brands.
Um, brands are required and usedto identify livestock um to
their owner and must beregistered every five years.
So uh there's the link in ourdescription box on where you go
to um, you know, registre-register your brand or
register your brand, period, ifyou have not done it um in the
(08:08):
past.
So I think that is all for ourHawaii updates.
SPEAKER_00 (08:12):
Nice.
So in Nebraska and the rest ofthe West, as you like to call
it.
Um, so I'm gonna start off withthings that are happening later
down the line, but that you cango ahead and sign up for no
matter where you're at.
So Ag Smart Money Week is avirtual week in November.
It's November 3rd through the7th, and it's focused on uh ag
(08:35):
finance, ag money, basically.
That's why we called it Ag SmartMoney.
But we're gonna have variousdifferent webinars available
discussing a variety of ag moneytopics, including things like uh
projected farm income, estimates, leasing, cash flows,
budgeting, income statements, all of that stuff.
(08:55):
So, and that is free and open tothe public.
You just have to go tocap.unl.edu, pick the days you
want uh and the webinar youwant.
And if you cannot make itbecause you're in a different
time zone, I was like, you stillwant to go ahead and register
because you can you'll get therecordings afterwards emailed to
you.
So um, so that'll be comingNovember 3rd through the 7th.
(09:16):
And then livestock riskinsurance webinars are available
for free and they're up and outthere.
So if you're interested in thenew WeenCalf risk protection,
which is being piloted in theplanes right now, uh all that
information is available and outthere as well as your typical
livestock risk protection AFN umPRF as well.
(09:38):
The egg budget calculator, thelivestock version, is now
available for free and to thepublic for use.
If you want to learn how to useit, how to set up your own
account and stuff, becauseright, getting started is half
the battle on October 20th at6:30 p.m.
Central Time, that's 1.30 p.m.
Hawaii time.
There is a free how-to onlinewebinar.
There are also tutorials thatare on the website.
(10:01):
But if you want help, kind oflike and you're going through
this process, I was like,Glennis and I will be available
and be online for however, pretty much however long it
takes or until we're tired, oneor the other.
So that will be availableOctober 20th.
Online farm finance and recordkeeping program is now online
for both Quicken and QuickBooks,as well as like if you're trying
(10:25):
to figure out just how you wantto do record keeping or how to
do basic record keeping, thatprogram is also available
online.
There are fees associated withthat, but you can look that up
on cap.unl.edu.
Um, the one big beautiful billdiscussing specifically those ag
related topics and how theyaffect producers everywhere in
(10:46):
the U.S.
We have a policy specialist, Dr.
Brad Lubin, who's very smart andhas been doing this for a few
decades.
That webinar is available forreplay for free either on the
YouTube channel or again, youcan go to cap.unl.edu and go to
the webinar archives and it's upthere.
Um, we have this is our second,we're going into our second year
(11:06):
for the Organize This program.
Um sign up begins in October.
So Organize This is just aprogram between the University
of Nebraska, South Dakota State, and North Dakota State.
You don't have to live in thosestates to participate.
You can be anywhere.
But it basically is focusing ongetting our important life
paperwork together as well asmaking sure that we have a
(11:27):
backup person in case somethinghappens to us and we cannot pay
our bills, for example.
Or, you know, I don't know abouty'all, but I do enjoy my
streaming services.
Netflix is, you know, notsponsored.
But I'm just saying, I was like, you know, again, if you have a
family, they're gonna be awfullyupset when, again, the
electricity's got to stay on,even if, you know, Melee or I
(11:50):
are taken out for a week or twoor something, if something
happens.
So you've got to have a backup, you've got to have a plan,
basically.
Or what we are suggesting ishaving a binder in a specific
location that you and whoeveragain is your backup know where
it's at so that you can, again,so that they know where to go in
order to be like, okay, we needto pay the utilities, we need to
(12:13):
pay the water, we need to pay,you know, whatever else.
So again, so that's kind of whatthat program is focusing on.
That there is a fee for that, but you can again go to
cap.unl.edu to sign up for that.
SPEAKER_01 (12:26):
So thanks, Shannon.
