Detoxification has become a wellness buzzword, but what does it really mean to "detox" your body? Dr. Enrico Dolcecore strips away the marketing hype to reveal what actually works and what's just snake oil in the detox industry.

Your body already has sophisticated detoxification systems—the liver performs over 500 vital functions, while kidneys, lungs, skin, and digestive system work tirelessly to process the 700,000 chemicals we're exposed to daily. Understanding these natural pathways is crucial before considering any supplemental detox protocol.

Those popular juice cleanses, colon cleanses, detox teas, and extreme fad diets? Dr. Dolcecori explains why most offer minimal benefits and can sometimes cause more harm than good. Real detoxification isn't about feeling terrible for days while drinking lemon water with cayenne pepper. Proper protocols should be structured and supervised, focusing on supporting rather than shocking your body's systems. The doctor outlines a comprehensive approach involving toxin assessment, opening drainage pathways, safe mobilization techniques, using appropriate binders, and recovery support—elements rarely found in over-the-counter detox kits.

For those seeking realistic ways to support their natural detox processes, simple daily habits make the biggest difference: proper hydration, cruciferous vegetables, avoiding processed foods, regular exercise, and reducing environmental toxin exposure. Combined with targeted supplements like milk thistle and NAC when appropriate, these strategies provide genuine support without the extreme measures or false promises that dominate the detox marketplace. Want to know if you truly need detoxification support? Consult with a qualified functional medicine practitioner who can assess your individual needs rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome everyone.
I'm Dr Enrico Dolcecori andthis week we are going to be
reviewing toxins and detoxifyingyour body on Living a Full Life
podcast.
Thanks for joining us this week.
Last week we went throughtoxins and then it led into this
.
A couple questions came inabout.
I love the podcast about toxins.
What about detoxing?

(00:23):
So we know we're exposed totoxins all the time.
What about detoxing and gettingthem out of the body?
What a great topic.
We've done a couple episodes ontoxins in season one and season
two.
We're now in season three ofthis podcast.
By the way, I can't believeit's been such a hit.
We keep doing it each and everyweek, but this week toxins.
So just type in toxins in theLiving a Full Life search menu,

(00:44):
whether you're on Spotify, ApplePodcasts or whatever, and
you'll see the two or threeother episodes we've done on
this.
If you want to dive a littlebit deeper, this one we're going
to go into detoxifying themyths, methods and proper
protocols that we should begoing through to truly do a
detox, and you'll see at GNC andhealth food stores and Whole
Foods detox kits.
Well, I'm going to burst thosebubbles for you a little bit

(01:06):
here and what truly happens whenwe are trying to detox.
So the key points on thisepisode are going to be detoxing
methods, breaking some myths, and how to detox the right way
under doctor supervision.
The only real way to do it isunder doctor supervision.
So the definition of detoxing isthe process of eliminating
toxins from the body to improveoverall health.

(01:26):
That is, plain and simple, whatwe're trying to do.
When we go into a detox phase, the body has natural detox
pathways that maybeunderstanding them may help us a
little bit more.
Like the liver, which filtersall of the blood in the body and
metabolizes the toxins thatprocess through it, the kidneys
end up flushing these toxins outof the body by combining it

(01:50):
with urine and water, and thenthe lungs expel carbon dioxide.
That's the main job is to getall the carbon dioxide, all the
waste products in our body thatwill turn on off gas into carbon
and oxygen, and these getbinded by the lungs and moved
out through carbon dioxide.
The skin is the major detoxerin the body.
It helps remove toxins fromblood and lymphatic system

(02:13):
through sweat, so through ourpores, and then, finally, the
digestive system eliminates allsolid wastes.
We understand that one prettysimple through the foods that we
eat and everything through thedigestive system can be
eliminated that way, includingbacteria and viruses as well.
So here's some cool stats.
The liver processes over 500vital functions related to

(02:36):
detoxification in general, andthat's from the Journal of
Hepatology, hepatology.
The average person is exposedto 700,000 chemicals daily,
every single day.
And that's from theenvironmental working group.
That's pretty hard to believe.

(02:56):
We're surrounded by this and wewent through this in the last
podcast about how we're exposedto toxins all the time and we
have to pick and choose thethings that we can control to
help make our you.

(03:41):
Often these, these programswhether you do a one-day juice
fast, a three-day juice fast, aseven-day juice fast, whatever
it is are low in protein andthey definitely spike blood
sugar and they limit thelong-term benefits of the
detoxification process anyways, because we're creating an
insulin spike in the body.
So juice cleanses, althoughhave some merit behind them, I

(04:02):
love them for giving thedigestive tract a vacation,
giving your mastication, yourdigestive meats, fibrous
vegetables, fibrous foods, giving it all just a little bit
of a break so that the liquidscan easily be absorbed into the
body, and gives your wholedigestive tract a little bit of

(04:23):
a one, two, three day vacationDepends how long you want to do
it for.
So that's one.
The second one is coloncleanses.
I don't know if you've triedthis and if you have, well, you
may have experienced it but theclaim is that it cleanses the
gut and improves digestion andunfortunately most colon
cleanses can't get deep enoughto really cleanse most of the
digestive tract.

(04:43):
The colon is the smallestportion of the entire digestive
tract, so we're not reallygetting an intestinal cleanse.
The reality it can reallydisrupt the natural gut bacteria
if it's done excessively Onceor twice to do this.
I think it's healthy for thecolon to go through a little bit
of a cleanse every now and then, once a year.
That's okay.
If you want to do it throughenema water cleanse, whatever it

(05:03):
is, make sure it's done safely.
But that's a popular one that'sused the coffee enemas.
Remember that little phase thatwas going through.
There's some merit behind thesethings.
I'm not breaking them down asmyths to never be tried, but to
do them repetitively aren't,isn't going to help or make a
major dent in overall health.
There's things like detox teasthat we drink that can help

(05:24):
improve things.
A lot of claims on fat burning, reduces bloating Teas and herbs
themselves have great healthbenefits behind them Chamomile
dandelion.
They have detoxing propertiesand are great to ingest.
But mainly relying on laxativescan be harmful if we're using

(05:45):
it for that reason alone.
But drinking teas are great, but not as a detox type system.
You can add them to yourregular regimen, your regular
intake of fluids for any reasonthat you may have to help calm
your mood, to help you sleep, tohelp digestion, to help the
liver detox.
These are great things to do,but the major claims that

(06:07):
they're saying that they'reactually detoxing your liver.
You're probably not gettingmuch benefit from that long-term
, or even by doing it once andthen.
Fad detoxes you've heard of this.
The master cleanse, thelemonade diet, where you just
eat one food or one juice.
Um, the real thing behind thatis that it can create rapid

(06:27):
weight loss and toxinelimination, but it's often
extreme and may result innutrition deficiencies If you do
it for too long.
The master cleanse is a 10 daything of just drinking lemon
juice.
I forget what was in it.
I did it once.
Cayenne pepper lemon juice.
Um, it was a couple of thingssalt and maybe something else.

(06:47):
There's only four and it waseasy to make and you had to
drink like 100 ounces of this aday or something like that.
And, yeah, if that's all you dofor 10 days, you're going to
lose a little bit of weight.
It may even be a little bitanti-inflammatory, because
there's nothing in there that'sreally inflammatory, but to
promote cleansing not reallycleansing anything.
So these methods may offer, youknow, short term results but

(07:11):
rarely address deeper toxicbuildup or support organ
function properly.
So let's skip all that.
There's the myths.
Okay, so myth?
Here's a couple of myths toabout detoxing.
Myth Number one you needextreme detoxes to cleanse your
body.
This is further from the truth.
Your liver, kidneys and gut arealready detoxing every single
day.
Extreme methods may cause moreharm than they cause good.

(07:33):
Myth number two detoxes are afast way to lose weight.
Well, you may get some resultsquickly, but rapid weight loss
from detoxing is often waterloss or muscle depletion, not
really fat.
Because of the hyper lowcaloric intake from juices, you
may go eating from a 2000calorie diet per day to a 400
calorie diet per day.

(07:54):
Your body will not go into fatburn because of that.
After day two it's going to gointo starvation mode and hold
onto fat even more and startbreaking down protein from
muscle to try and figure outwhat the heck you're doing to it
, to your body, as long asyou're going to try and do this
detox.
So, and then what ends uphappening is, once you're done

(08:14):
and you start eating a normaldiet, your body's not going to
lose fat, it's going to try andretain even more for the next
crazy thing you put it through.
So that's what's happeningthere.
It's a, it's a survivalmechanism of our metabolism that
does that.
Myth number three detoxing meansfeeling sick or exhausted.
No, it should not make you feelsick or exhausted.
These are extreme detoxes thatpeople go through and that's why

(08:36):
they have those side effects,While some fatigue can happen if
we're going throughcarbohydrate detoxification, but
extreme sickness during a detoxmay indicate that toxins are
being mobilized faster than yourbody really can handle them.
So they're not getting them outof the body, they're going back
into the bloodstream andcreating more of a inflammatory
process as the liver tries tore-clean these up and the

(08:58):
kidneys try to clean it up onceagain.
Because guess where all toxinsare held in the body after
they're processed through oursystems Our fat cells?
That's where they all arestored.
So when we go into a detox or arapid weight loss, these fat
cells start to shrink and theysqueeze out everything that's in
it from water.
Waste products and toxins goback into the bloodstream and

(09:20):
the lymphatic system and that'show our body goes back into
trying to push them back out ofthe body.
And the fourth myth that I cameup with was all detox
supplements are effective.
They're not, and I'm prettysure all the listeners right
here are not going to be dupedby that.
Many over-the-counter productslack scientific support or
proper dosing for effectivedetox pathways.

(09:41):
How can you sell one box of acolon cleanse to the entire
population from the age of 21years old to 79 years old, male,
female, different weights,different heights?
It doesn't make much sense.
This is why we need to get intodoctor supervision when it comes
to detoxes and unfortunatelythe medical field doesn't really
do this.
There is no real detoxificationprocess under medical

(10:04):
guidelines that you can go to amedical doctor, an MD or a DO
that will put you through this.
So you typically are looking atfunctional medical doctors who
may be DOs, nurse practitioners,MDs, doctors of chiropractic in
that realm who are licensedinternists or in some type of
functional medicine program.
These testings will go througha few steps.

(10:26):
There's three big steps they gothrough.
Number one assess the toxinload.
In functional medicine we usetesting for heavy metals, mold,
pesticides, herbicides, anythingthat could be building up in
the body, and that's throughspecific blood, hair analysis,
saliva testing or even stooltesting.
Step two is we open thedrainage pathways.

(10:47):
That's what every functionalmedicine doctor is trying to do.
We want to support the liver, kidney and gut function first
with herbs, minerals and IVtherapies.
Step three is to mobilize thesetoxins.
So open up the drainagepathways first, then mobilize
toxins safely, in an effectiveway, not some crazy fad diet and

(11:07):
we can mix some techniques inhere, like IV therapy, infrared
saunas, red light therapy and tostimulate sweating toxins out,
stimulate cellular repair andusing key antioxidants in the
detox pathways, Something likeglutathione, which can be taken
orally or by intravenous to helpthese key antioxidants in the

(11:30):
detox pathway directly into thebloodstream.
Then we got to use binders.
Once we start to open up toxicpathways, we need to get binders
into the system to hold on tothese toxins, to not allow them
to all go back into thebloodstream and recreate the
inflammatory process of theliver, kidneys and lymph system
to try and filter these thingsout again.

(11:51):
So things like activatedcharcoal, bentonite clay and
other binders help trap andremove toxins safely.
And there's other stuff that wecan use too.
And number five, a doctor willalways support your recovery
through this, Rebuild nutrientstores with minerals, vitamins
and probiotics.
So every detox process shouldcome with proper mineral support

(12:11):
, some key vitamins and maybeeven some probiotics, depending
on what detox we're aiming for.
Maybe we want to support thegut through that as well.
So my recommendation from apodcast which again is not
medical advice please don't takeany of this.
Always work with a practitionerif you're going to do any of
this stuff.
There are no over-the-counterthings that you can do, but

(12:32):
you're more than welcome to trya juice fast, a two-day juice
fast or the master cleanse for afew days.
Whatever you want to try, youcan try these things, but as
long as you don't have anoutcome that you're trying to
get with this, because you'renot going to get much from it.
But if you're going to supportany type of detox system, you
want to look into milk thistleand acetylcysteine, which is

(12:54):
sometimes called NAC or NAC.
It boosts the glutathionenaturally in the body.
Dandelion roots and chlorella.
Milk thistle is just wonderfulliver support it's great for no
matter what detox approach youwant to take.
Maybe this is just like a oneweek health challenge you're
going to put yourself through,You're going to eat clean, drink
a lot of water and you want tosupport a detox pathways.

(13:14):
This is stuff you can do safely.
Add some milk thistle to yourdiet just a oral pill, some NAC
that boosts the glutathionenaturally in your body, Some
dandelion root, which supportsdigestion and liver health, and
then some chlorella, which is anatural, safe binder that binds
to heavy metals.
And follow the recommendeddosage on the packages and

(13:35):
you've got yourself your littlemini detox challenge that you
can do for seven days, 14 days,30 days, whatever you like.
Those are safe, short orlong-term, with a proper diet
and good hydration.
So those are easy ways and somethings you can take away and
see how you feel.
Most people feel better withthese things.
Very few feel worse and somejust feel the same because
they're overall healthy to come.

(13:55):
You know most for most people.
Some practical detox strategiesthat you can follow are just
from daily habits, so we can usedetox support things like
drinking enough filtered water, drinking enough per day.
Most people need at least 100ounces depending on your body
weight of clean, filtered waterevery single day just to support
natural detox.
Just from sweating, urinationand going to the bathroom All

(14:19):
these things require hydrationto get these wastes out through
the body.
We talked about the kidneyswith water and urine, sweating
and bowel movements they allrequire hydration and healthy
doses of water to get healthybowel movements and healthy
amounts of urination.
Coniferous vegetables likebroccoli, cauliflower and these

(14:41):
coniferous type vegetables arefantastic for natural liver
support.
So adding these to your diet tomake your diet more healthy are
great.
Avoid processed foods andinflammatory oils.
These things kind of bog downthe natural detoxification
processes of the body and byhaving healthy oils you help
support detoxification and alsoa healthy diet.

(15:06):
Engage in regular exercise,regular sweating.
It can be even a sauna.
Sitting in a sauna every dayfor 15 minutes or 10 minutes.
Just getting a natural sweatresponse can help the pathway of
lymphatic flow and release ofwaste through the biggest organ
in our body, our skin.
Reduce toxin exposure by usingnatural household products and

(15:27):
skincare.
We talked about this heavily inthe last episode.
I would follow up with thatright after this.
It's a short one.
We kept it 20 minutes.
Go listen to that, and that's agreat one as well.
So, toxins and how to detoxReally, the point of this
podcast is to find a goodpractitioner If you feel like
you're inflamed or you're backedup or, uh, you're, you're toxic

(15:49):
, which many of us can gothrough a healthy detox system
and and get reap great benefitsfrom it.
You want a detox that ispowerful for you but must be
done safely and correctly, andthat's only going to be done
with a doctor, because you'regoing to have some pre-screening
tests, like we talked about, through blood testing, saliva
testing, stool testing, hairtesting, whatever it is checking

(16:10):
for heavy metals, molds, pesticides, herbicides, lead
things that are exposed in ourenvironments and probably within
us and we want to encourage allof you that are listening to
avoid foods and instead focus onimproving their daily habits
for long-term results.
So just doing everything rightrather than just one thing right

(16:30):
, and then schedule aconsultation with a full life
chiropractic and our functionalmed doctors there.
You can go to info at full lifetampacom and virtually get
connected witha doctor that canhelp you through your detox
journey.
Most of these things can bedone by mailing things directly
to your doorstep.
Very cool stuff there andlisten in next week for our next

(16:51):
episode on how to keep you andyour family healthy, and if you
have any specific detoxquestions, please feel free to
email us.
We love answering yourquestions and helping you out.
Stay well, stay healthy, takecare.
