Today’s show is about how we are all seeking security in an insecure world. It seems like society and the world around us has gone completely off the rails. Wars have broken out around the globe, saber rattling is taking place on a daily basis, only instead of sabers, people are threatening to unleash nuclear, biological weapons, or terrorist attacks. Christians encounter challenges or ridicule about their faith and beliefs. Now here in the United States we’re being hammered on a daily basis about trade wars, massive roundup of immigrants, doing away with due process of law, possible recession, and of course there’s the usual end times folks going full blast.
We must realize that the purpose of the media is not always to just inform us, it is to get an emotional response and thus generate what we call eyeballs and clicks. The more they can motivate people to read, see, listen to, and believe what they are saying, writing, or showing, the more money they can make. When this is coupled with today’s social media, and the lack of thought that goes into most people’s posts or “shares,” there is an onslaught of negative news, and as a result, more of us are feeling insecure, not only about today, but also about the future.
Today I want to look at the whole idea of seeking security in an insecure world. Before I begin let’s start with a prayer – ‘Dear Heavenly Father, I know that you are in charge of the Universe. I know that you have a grand plan for us. I believe that you sent your Son, my Lord, and Savior Jesus Christ to live and walk among us and to die for us. I believe that you raised Him from the grave and that He sits at your right hand. Father, I ask that you send the Holy Spirit into my life whenever I begin to feel insecure when pressured by the world. Thank you – Amen.’
“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.” The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.” Matthew 7:24-27
Those words in Matthew chapter 7 verses 24 through 27 perfectly sum up what I want to talk about. It is obvious that today’s world is full of uncertainty, chaos, and change. We experience strange and difficult events every day. If we are to survive and even thrive in this new world, then it is vital that we make certain that the foundation of our faith is solid. We cannot afford to have a faith built on shifting sands because only with a strong, level foundation will we ever achieve a feeling of security in this insecure world.
When we have that strong foundation, then whenever the rains, floods, and winds of the negative forces of life begin to feel like they’re threatening to knock us off our feet and keep us down we will have the ability to stand up to them. Nowadays it seems that more of us are talking about how unsure we are of our faith, often we are unable to explain to non-believers why we believe as we do, why we are confident in the future and that is because in some cases we have built our foundations on superficial knowledge. There is no depth of belief, our pilings are not driven deeply enough into the ground, so we hesitate to respond; or when we do respond, it is with anger, and we lash out at others. We become everything we are not supposed to be as Christians. We often do not know how to handle our feelings of insecurity.
To help deal with these feelings we need to explore several areas; first, what can we do when we begin to feel anxious about the future, second, where do we go when we feel insecure, and finally, do we have any type of promise from God concerning our feelings of security?
As I mentioned earlier one of the first steps, we have to take is to make certain of our found
