Learn how to walk in this freedom, rely on God's grace, and experience true victory as you live out your new identity.

Key Verses:

Romans 6:1-5 : "What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his."

Quotes:

“Sin brings death, but now we have the power of Christ within us. Why would we want to go back to that?”

Key Points:

  1. Sin is no longer our master; we have been made new in Christ.
  2. Our desires have changed because of our new identity in Christ, leading us to reject sin.
  3. Relying on Christ’s power is essential for living out this new identity and reigning in life.

Ross O'Hair: Welcome to the Living in Jesus podcast. (00:05):
undefined
Have you ever thought about what it means tobe made new?
Given a new identity, how does that changeyour life and your choices?
Imagine the difference it could make in howyou see yourself and the decisions you make
every day. If you were truly new.
Also, what does it mean to be united withChrist even more so?

(00:27):
What does it mean to be united with Christin both his death and his resurrection?
Today we delve into the richness of Romanssix 1 to 5 and find ourselves faced with
these profound questions that have the powerto reshape our entire existence and our
experience of life.
My name is Ross O'Hare, and I'm your hosttoday.

(00:47):
And joining me on today's episode is JamiePyles.
But before we get to today's discussion, let's take a moment and listen to the
Scripture.

Corrie O'Hair: Romans six one through five. (01:04):
undefined
What shall we say then?
Are we to continue in sin so that grace mayincrease?
May it never be.
How shall we who died to sin still live init?
Or do you not know that all of us who havebeen baptized into Christ Jesus have been
baptized into his death?

(01:24):
Therefore we have been buried with himthrough baptism into death, so that as Christ
was raised from the dead through the gloryof the father, so we too might walk in
newness of life.
For if we have become united with him in thelikeness of his death, certainly we shall
also be in the likeness of his resurrection.

Ross O'Hair: All right. Hi, Jamie. How are you today? (01:47):
undefined

Jamie Pharis Pyles: Hi, Ross. I'm doing well, thank you. (01:49):
undefined
Good.

Ross O'Hair: All right, so we are going to be delving into Romans six. (01:51):
undefined
I'm excited to go through it with you.
And today we're covering the first fiveverses.
I know Paul does this a lot, where we'resometimes connecting chapters a little bit.
So he just finished chapter five with bow,and now he starts out with a question in
Romans six. So maybe you can talk to usabout what he's connecting here between
Romans five and six.

Jamie Pharis Pyles: Okay. So Paul's talking about how sin increased under the law, but God's grace (02:11):
undefined
abounded even more.
And it was quite controversial in his day.
And even today it is.
So he's going to use Romans six to explainwhat he means by that and to answer any

(02:33):
objections. Okay.

Ross O'Hair: So as he, you know, he starts out, what shall we say then? (02:35):
undefined
Are we to continue in sin?
Why is that controversial today?
And back then? Like what was going on behindthe scenes that caused that to be so
controversial?

Jamie Pharis Pyles: Well, here Paul's using a phrase that means to habitually sin. (02:45):
undefined
And a lot of people confuse that.
They think, okay, any kind of sin.
But he's saying this is deliberate.
This is a practice of sin.
Yeah. So of course he's going to say no.

(03:06):
Why would we do that?

Ross O'Hair: Okay, so some people are taking this as. (03:08):
undefined
Then you can just send as much as you wantbecause God's grace is there, right?
And what does Paul actually trying to saywith that?

Jamie Pharis Pyles: He's saying you have died to sin. (03:17):
undefined
You are no longer connected to the practiceof it's not something you want to do now in
this new creation state that you're in.

Ross O'Hair: So in the intro, we talked about being new and having a new identity. (03:32):
undefined
So what you're saying then is because we'vebeen made new, that we don't want to continue
sinning, right? That's the question thatPaul is asking.
Why should we continue sinning if grace isincreasing and you're saying is our hearts
been made new? So that's not what we want todo, right?
As we move forward in the verses, Paulbegins to talk about being baptized into

(03:55):
Christ and baptized into his death.
How do we connect those dots?

Jamie Pharis Pyles: Okay, well, I want to take just a moment to point something out because it will help us (04:00):
undefined
to understand what's going on behind thescenes here.
One of the reasons that we at Christianfamilies today delve into Romans five through
eight is this is where the word sin isconcentrated the most.
From 5 to 8 the word sin is hamartia in theGreek is used 45 times.

(04:28):
Wow. 41 of those times most people don'trealize is a noun.
Okay. Only four times is a verb.
Okay. I know this sounds crazy, but whatPaul is talking about here is sin as an
entity, like a power.
You remember back in Genesis when God toldCain, look, sin is crouching at your door and

(04:49):
it wants to master you.
Yeah, that's the kind of power that we'retalking about.
So we're not talking about sin as a verb oran action, but as an entity.
So Paul is going to say, you are dead tothat now.
Yeah. And you have been made new so that youhave been disconnected from

(05:16):
that power, in a sense, in your soul andspirit, in the new man, in the inner man.
And so he's going to explain in the rest ofthe chapter how that happens, what that looks
like. And the first thing he's going tomention is baptism.
Mhm. Because he's going to explain thatwe've been crucified, died, resurrected.

(05:43):
And in a sense that's a picture of baptism.
We're not talking about water baptism here.
Yeah. That's symbolic.
We're talking about that spiritual baptism.
And he uses the word baptism.
And this is the only place I think that theword is used.
And it means literally to dip or dyesomething to submerge it.

(06:06):
And I think of like a piece of dingy whitecloth going into a deep purple dye.
When it comes out, it is changed, right?
Yeah. And it cannot go back to that dingywhite cloth anymore.
So this is the beginning of that processthat we have been immersed into Christ.

(06:30):
And now we are a new creation, a new entity.
Yeah.

Ross O'Hair: Just like that new cloth. (06:35):
undefined
That cloth that's purple is like a new clothbecause it looks completely different.
So, you know, a lot of times you're talkingabout nouns and verbs of the word sin.
I think it's important to really bring thatout.
And I'm glad you did, because when I thinkabout it, a lot of times when people think
about sin, it's like the action of doingsomething.
And so that can really get confusing whenwe're talking about are you dead to sin?

(06:55):
It's like, well, I think of the action.
Well, no, I'm not dead to that because.

Jamie Pharis Pyles: I'm still sinning. (06:58):
undefined

Ross O'Hair: Yeah, exactly. But you're saying you're dead to the actual power of sin, right? (06:59):
undefined
How does that I mean, how does somebodyunderstand that in, like, non-theological
terms, I'm dead to sin.
Like, what does that actually mean?
Like, how do how do we understand that?

Jamie Pharis Pyles: Well, using what Paul taught us, he's going to go on to say, because we've been crucified (07:13):
undefined
with Christ, that we not only have this newidentity from being immersed, and we look
different now that we actually are, inessence, new.

(07:36):
We are created new because he's going to useanother word here united with Christ.
Okay. And that word, I'm really hard pressedto pronounce these.

Ross O'Hair: Yeah. You're doing. (07:47):
undefined

Jamie Pharis Pyles: Great. These Greek words. (07:48):
undefined
But this is some fun stuff.
And it's this beautiful image of what itmeans to be born again of joint origin.
Okay. Like, now you have been fused withChrist.
Okay. You don't know where he begins and youend, or vice versa.

(08:11):
Okay. And that's why because Christ is notgoing to be united to sin, right?
He needs to make us new so that he can bejoined with us.
And we'll talk about that more in Romansseven, what that looks like.
But here it's being it's really being buriedtogether as two and brought up as one.

(08:39):
You united with Christ.
That makes you totally different.

Ross O'Hair: Yeah. So in Romans five, again, I like going back to this, but it talks about reigning in (08:43):
undefined
life. So this is what he's kind ofdescribing as reigning in life is because
we've been made new and we've been baptizedinto Christ, and we have we're dead to the
power of sin.
We're new in this whole idea of how weinteract with sin in our lives, right?
I mean, isn't that what we're trying to sayis like, because we're new and we've been

(09:05):
baptized and we're fused with Christ, ourrelationship to sin is different, and I think
that's why he says, are we going to continuein it so that grace may increase?
It's like we don't want to like if we trulyunderstand God's grace, we don't want to
continue in sin just so that graceincreases.
It's because we've been made new.

Jamie Pharis Pyles: You've been made new, and we're going to talk about this in a little while later. (09:23):
undefined
But sin is still present in the body, and sothere's still can be a temptation of sin.
But your desires are now going to change.
You're never going to be comfortable withsin again.

(09:44):
And you're wanting now to please yourheavenly father.
You're wanting to follow the new desires ofyour heart.
And since sin brings death, the flesh bringsdeath.
Why do we want to go back into that?
It never had a benefit for us, and that'swhy we recognized it and saw it right to be

(10:09):
Saved and brought into newness of life.
So now Christ is in you.
He's there to empower you.
And now you have a new goal.
You have a new fresh lease on life, a newway to look at things.
You knew you weren't reigning in life underthe old system.

(10:32):
So why would you want to go back to that?

Ross O'Hair: I think it's a powerful argument that Paul is making, because a lot of times we we get (10:34):
undefined
duped by the enemy, that we do actually wantthis sin, and it never leads to anything
that's positive in our lives.
We're never like, yes, that's exciting.
Especially as new believers. Again, we havea new heart, new desires.
But yeah, we believe that lie, that it worksfor us somehow or that it is something we
want as opposed to a temptation from theenemy.

Jamie Pharis Pyles: Exactly. And we also, because we say all the time, belief drives behavior. (10:56):
undefined
We want to see ourselves as we truly are.
You are now like Christ.
And when you begin to see yourself likethat.
Yeah, you're going to follow that design.

(11:18):
Not that old way.
You won't ever feel comfortable followingthat old pattern or path again.
You see yourself as that new person, andthat really is what we teach here at CFT, is
that your belief about yourself is going todrive everything.
So let's see ourselves as Christ has said,we truly are.

(11:41):
So I like to use this in counseling becauseit was so powerful for me.
And I know we're talking about Americanbasketball.
And so as people listen all over the countryand maybe in other countries, they may or may
not know a guy named Michael Jordan, buthe's the most famous.

(12:01):
My favorite was Pete Maravich, but that'sanother story.
But I liken it to, let's say I wanted to beable to play basketball, and I'm only so-so
at it. But one day during a game, suddenly Ihave the spirit of Michael Jordan in me.
And now I have his abilities.

(12:22):
I have his game plan.
I have his experience, I have his power.
But I step out there on the court and Icontinue to play like Jamie.
Why would I do that?
But sadly, so many Christians today, that'sthe way they're living Christ.
They have completeness in Christ.

(12:45):
They have the full power of the Holy Spiritwithin them, and they're continuing to live
like they used to live.
No idea of this power they have to rely onto play this game.
Yeah. And so we're, we're we're not usingwhat we've been gifted.

(13:07):
And as we begin to realize that I am morethan what I was.
I'm not playing with the same tools anymore.
Yeah. Yeah. And that's so empowering and andso freeing and helps us to walk in more peace
and more success.

Ross O'Hair: Now, someone may be listening and be like, okay, I understand the idea of, you know, (13:26):
undefined
Michael Jordan's power coming in and beingable to play basketball better, but we're
talking about real life. Like somethinghappens in life.
We're facing a situation and I'm facing allthe emotions and I'm facing all the same.
As we've talked about with you many times, like the same brain wave patterns and
synapses firing of the ways I've handled itbefore in my own strength.

(13:49):
How how do you make that?
Or how do we make it simplified for somebodybeing like, what does it look like to
actually rely?
And I don't want to use the word use thepower of Christ in us, but like rely on that
power that he has inside of us to live in aday to day situation in our lives.
Like, how do we do that?

Jamie Pharis Pyles: Okay, so we've talked about brain synapses and how they kick in and make us do things (14:06):
undefined
over and over the same way we've always donethem.
But you have the power of the Holy Spiritspeaking into you and whatever way that might
be. And so as he speaks to me about thedifference that he wants to see in my walk,

(14:29):
I'm going to hear him, maybe weakly, atfirst a little stronger the next time, and
I'm going to stumble and I'm going to makemistakes.
He is gracious.
That's what we're talking about here.
God's grace for us.
And each time I'm going to hear his voice alittle bit stronger and I'm going to respond
to that and do a little better.
As we began this podcast, my first thoughtis, okay, father, this one's on you.

(14:56):
This is your power manifest in me.
It's on you.
How well I do in this podcast.
It's not on me.
This is your life flowing through me.
I'm surrendered to your plan.
And so it's a daily practice of faith thathe's going to show up and do this through me,

(15:19):
and he's never failed me.

Ross O'Hair: If I'm hearing you correctly. (15:20):
undefined
So because we've been made new and becauseyou know that you're new, you have a
different mentality.
You believe that you are different at thecore and that you have new, godly desires at
the core. And so when you're living life andyou're faced with a difficult situation,
whether it's a temptation or just a, again,a desire to do well in a podcast or to speak
the truth well and clearly there's anattitude of dependence of, okay, God, I need

(15:46):
you to show up and to work through me and togive me the words.
And it's in that posture and in thatpractice of depending upon Christ that you
are experiencing and dipping into thatpower.

Jamie Pharis Pyles: Absolutely. It's just like the Michael Jordan story. (15:58):
undefined
I'm going to expect him to show up and dothis through me.
Got it. And that will lead to my surrenderand not trying to step in and do it my old
way. Right. And I begin to see success inthat.
Yeah.

Ross O'Hair: Okay. Yep. Totally makes sense. (16:17):
undefined
So if we had a major takeaway for everybodylistening, what would it be?
How do we sum up what we're talking abouttoday?

Jamie Pharis Pyles: What Christ did altered us to a point through that baptism and through that uniting with (16:25):
undefined
us. We're totally different.
We are changed in the areas that matter.
Okay. What God is looking at.
Yes, he's going to look at our behaviors, but only in the sense that he now wants them

(16:52):
to align with Christ and who we truly arenow, not because they change our value, but
because it's best for us to walk in this newpower and this new reliance.
Yeah.

Ross O'Hair: And that really connects back with obviously we finished the discussion with Bo, but (17:09):
undefined
reigning in life when we do that, when werely on his power and do that and depend on
him. It really does create this abundanceand this reigning in life that again, I know
all of us as believers are looking for andwanting.

Jamie Pharis Pyles: And only he does best. (17:25):
undefined

Ross O'Hair: Yes, exactly. Yep. (17:27):
undefined
And that's exactly right.
Only he can really, truly do that in us.
Awesome. Jamie, thank you so much forwalking us through these first five verses of
chapter six. And we'll be back next week forpart two of chapter six with Jamie.
