Jana Shelfer (00:00):
Are you ready to
create a life you crave?
Let's spin that doom loop ofnegativity into an upward
success cycle and start LivingLucky®.
Jason Shelfer (00:14):
Good morning.
Jana Shelfer (00:15):
I'm Jana, I'm
Jason and we are Living Lucky®.
You are too.
We're at summer camp.
Woohoo.
When was the last time you wentto adult summer camp?
Jason Shelfer (00:26):
Did you ride the
bus, did your parents take you
or did you fly?
Jana Shelfer (00:29):
And I have to tell
you we are sunburned, we are
sore and we are exhausted.
Jason Shelfer (00:35):
And my feet are
muddy, like it's going to take
some special effort to get themud out of my toenails.
Jana Shelfer (00:42):
We stink.
Jason Shelfer (00:43):
We are literally
like kids at summer camp I don't
stink to myself until, like, Istart taking my shirt off and
then I'm like, oh, I haveclothes literally hung out all
over our room air air air drycleaning, dry cleaning every
article of clothing that we havehas somehow gotten wet.
(01:05):
It's got a funk on it.
And then we brought our dog,and our dog has not only been
jumping in the lake, but thenstarted drinking pond water Now
this is the thing she's got thisbeautiful mountain, clear lake
water and she goes to the nastymud puddles and drinks the mud
puddles that the trucks havebeen driving through.
(01:26):
And then she wakes up at 2, 3,and 4 o'clock in the morning
with the squirts With diarrhea.
Jana Shelfer (01:32):
She's like I got
to go and the thing about it is
that we are on this hotel.
It's not like we can just openthe door and let her out.
Jason Shelfer (01:42):
And she thinks,
every time we go to the elevator
she's like no, I'm not going onthere, I'm going out this door
to the ice maker.
Jana Shelfer (01:49):
I've got to go.
I've got to go, tt I've got togo now.
Jason Shelfer (01:54):
I've got to go TT
out my butt.
Jana Shelfer (01:58):
So I guess what
we're talking about today is
just pure summer camp and theenergy that that brings.
Jason Shelfer (02:05):
Well, because you
know that feeling if you've
ever been to summer camp, thatfeeling right when you drive in,
right when you go through thegates of summer camp and we had
that when we pulled into thisplace and we drove over this
bridge that was a canopy bridge.
Yes, Like this, old it was, Idon't even know how like bridges
of Madison County type bridge.
Jana Shelfer (02:24):
It is.
It is the bridge of MadisonCounty.
You know that movie where MerylStreep and-.
Jason Shelfer (02:31):
Clint Eastwood
getting dirty, were having an
affair.
Jana Shelfer (02:36):
While the family
was at the fair, they were
having an affair.
Jason Shelfer (02:39):
There you go, and
so when you go through the
bridge you end up in narnia onthe other side.
Jana Shelfer (02:45):
like it is just
beautiful it is like that is a
great description it's.
Jason Shelfer (02:50):
You just went
through the the porthole into
this heavenly amazing no place, the minute.
Jana Shelfer (02:58):
We came out the
other side of that bridges of
madison county bridge, all of asudden we see fog on the lake.
Jason Shelfer (03:07):
Deer are all
around us bunnies are just
hopping around I thought you'regonna say humping, but I didn't
see them, but they were hoppingaround and it did.
Jana Shelfer (03:18):
It felt majestic,
it was majestic it was a.
Jason Shelfer (03:21):
It was a magical
place.
Yeah, mountains all aroundTrees.
It was heaven on earth.
And the owners, like theproprietors of this property,
are Tommy and Amy Newman, and itis incredible and I got to see
some of the work that they putinto the place and I was
flabbergasted, purelyflabbergasted.
Jana Shelfer (03:41):
So the point of
our podcast today, though, is
that summer camp energy yes, andadults can have it both
reminded us.
For me it reminded me of I wentto I guess it was I don't know
if it was bible school camp orvacation bible school it wasn't
(04:03):
even vacation bible school.
You go away church camp churchcamp okay, is that what you call
it, church?
Jason Shelfer (04:08):
so I had church
camp and you go away for like
two, two weeks or four weeks.
You had the option okay, minewas just spend the night.
Jana Shelfer (04:14):
Mine was just a
week okay, yes, yes, you learn
to dance hello and yes, youlearn silly little chants, you
know, like Mabel Mabel strongand able.
Jason Shelfer (04:26):
Get your elbows
off the table this is not a
horse's stall.
Jana Shelfer (04:31):
This is a first
class dining hall.
Round the table.
Jason Shelfer (04:35):
Yeah, so we had
centenary camp, which was our
Methodist summer camp, and itwas a one week long camp.
It was very different than thecamp I went to in North Carolina
where you go for two weeks orfour weeks and they had the big
lake and the blob that you wouldjump off the thing and shoot
somebody off the other end.
Jana Shelfer (04:54):
You always talk
about that.
Jason Shelfer (04:55):
It was fun.
It was so fun.
Jana Shelfer (04:57):
It kind of is like
a do you know how dirty dancing
?
Yes, has that environment whereit's kind of in a sleepy town.
A bunch of old people.
Jason Shelfer (05:09):
So we're in a
town called Oodawa.
Oodawa, which is just fun tosay.
Some people pronounce it Ottawa, but the locals pronounce it
Oodawa, so I'm going to go withOodawa.
Jana Shelfer (05:20):
But I have a
confession Uh-oh, sometimes when
the locals speak, I feel likethey add a couple extra
syllables.
They do.
Jason Shelfer (05:29):
And I questioned
a local yesterday because one of
the boat drivers or one of thecoaches here's name's Joy J-O-Y.
But when they say it, they saywell go ask Joey I heard that
too, to where I started doubtingmyself and I was like hey, real
quick, because when everybodywas doing the introductions I
(05:50):
heard Joy and everybody iscalling her Joey.
So is it J-O-Y or J-O-E-Y?
And everybody's like well,obviously it's J-O-Y, joey, okay
.
Jana Shelfer (06:05):
So I guess what
we're kind of talking about
today is that both of us woke upthis morning and said I feel
like I'm at summer camp.
I really do, and I kind ofresigned that I would ever have
this feeling again.
Jason Shelfer (06:21):
Yeah, and it
feels really good and it also
feels like we've been having somuch fun at summer camp that we
need a day of break, like a dayof rest.
Jana Shelfer (06:31):
No, you even said
that last night at dinner you
were getting everybody's phonenumbers.
Jason Shelfer (06:37):
Oh yeah, let's
stay in touch after summer.
Let's make sure we're stillconnected.
Let's make sure we're stillconnected.
What are your digits?
Let's be pen pals.
Jana Shelfer (06:46):
Which just
reminded me of when I left
church camp.
That's exactly what we did wegot out our pens and papers and
we started writing down a listof people that we are going to
keep in touch with.
Yeah, and I honestly If ourmoms would let us call long
distance.
Jason Shelfer (07:05):
Some of you right
now are listening and you're
like what does that mean?
Like it costs to call longdistance.
We didn't have cell phones.
It was 25 cents a minute.
Jana Shelfer (07:14):
And now all you
have to do is, would you say,
touch the tips.
Jason Shelfer (07:18):
Yeah, all you
have to do is touch your iPhones
together and you trade contactinformation.
Jana Shelfer (07:23):
But it's funny how
we're doing that.
Jason Shelfer (07:26):
Yeah.
Jana Shelfer (07:27):
It does bring out
this childlike energy.
Jason Shelfer (07:32):
And the funny
thing is we're here specifically
for a water ski camp andcompetition.
Jana Shelfer (07:39):
Yes.
Jason Shelfer (07:40):
So we will be
having this type of summer camp
again multiple times throughoutthe year because we're kind of
getting, we're insertingourselves into the ski community
.
So it's this, it's not likewe're going to just be once a
year, possibly running intodifferent people in our
different cabins and ourdifferent lakes, I guess around
(08:01):
the world.
Jana Shelfer (08:01):
It's funny, the
group dynamic that starts to
form on its own.
Jason Shelfer (08:05):
Yeah.
Jana Shelfer (08:06):
How you start
getting those inside jokes as a
group.
Yes, do you know what I'm saying?
Absolutely Without evenrealizing it, and I just feel
like there's two participantsthat are actually sleeping in
their cars and I don't know.
Jason Shelfer (08:24):
It's just Well,
so the stories that are being
made this weekend or this weekare going to be the stories that
are told 10 years from now.
Oh, yeah, that are going to bemaking people laugh at some ski
camp, summer camp in the futurefor the next generations, and
(08:44):
it's just going to be like, oh,remember when Vince and Noah
were sleeping in their cars andslept till noon when we were all
skiing sets.
Jana Shelfer (08:53):
Or when he skied
into the weeds and it was up his
trunks.
Jason Shelfer (08:59):
Like fix that
bush Vince.
Oh, so funny.
Jana Shelfer (09:06):
Anyway.
So I guess we're just laughingthis morning because it really
does feel like we're kids again.
Jason Shelfer (09:13):
I know I love it.
It's a great energy to be inand to just kind of go with the
flow and enjoy the moment to bein that moment.
Jana Shelfer (09:23):
Have you at all
thought about work or thought
about?
Have you at all been worried?
Jason Shelfer (09:31):
about anything
Loaded down with worry.
I have not had any worry.
Jana Shelfer (09:35):
It's kind of been
a let's let go.
Jason Shelfer (09:37):
There was a
moment yesterday so yesterday
was Thursday Juneteenth, okay, and I did.
There was a moment in themorning where I said I want to
remember to check the stockmarket and the stock market
wasn't even going.
So as soon as I opened my phoneI was like oh yes, juneteenth,
stock market's not open.
Shut the phone off, done, andafter that nothing.
You were good to go, good to go,didn't even worry about it,
(09:59):
just enjoyed the moment, enjoyedthe scenery, enjoyed every
little thing about the day, about the day.
So why does it take summer campto get into this vortex?
Sometimes I think we need togive ourselves space outside of
our own environment to just andit might just be going to a
coffee shop.
(10:19):
So if you're in your ownenvironment day in, it's that
law of habituation we get caughtin the cog of our own machine.
Jana Shelfer (10:27):
Then that's a good
point because I think not only
the environment, but alsomeeting new people yeah because
when you're meeting new people, there's a level of curiosity and
, and you know, you're peelingback the layers of hey, you know
what?
Let's get to know each other, yeah.
Jason Shelfer (10:46):
Yeah, yeah.
So it's just, you can createthese environments wherever you
are.
It's just getting out.
It's breaking your cycle andbreaking your routine, that's
all.
Jana Shelfer (10:57):
I love it.
And how do?
Jason Shelfer (10:58):
we do that.
Jana Shelfer (10:58):
I highly suggest
it.
If you're an adult out there,go to Summer Camp.
Jason Shelfer (11:03):
Yeah create it
for yourself.
Jana Shelfer (11:06):
We got to come up
with a cheer today.
Jason Shelfer (11:08):
Okay, let's do it
.
Jana Shelfer (11:10):
Have a great day.
Jason Shelfer (11:10):
