Speaker 1 (00:01):
I'm Charles Vance and this is the Living Words
Podcast.
We're currently going through a52-week devotional In His
Footsteps, 52 Weeks in theGospel of John.
But this week we're going totake a pause.
I'm going to do something alittle different.
We are entering the Feast ofTabernacles, the cycle of feasts
of the Creator.
You know the cycle of feasts ofthe Creator.

(00:22):
This is the feast that marksthe time when the Messiah came
to rescue man and became flesh.
As John tells us in his word, the word was with God, the word
was God and the word becameflesh and dwelt among us or
tabernacled among us.
This is the time of year thatthat happened.

(00:42):
Today is the first day of theFeast of Tabernacles, it's the
15th day and it's the Sabbath.
So I've got a special programI'm going to do and this is
Escaping the Snare how to DefeatTemptation with God's Word.
This is something that Istruggle with every day is the

(01:04):
temptation of sin, and itdoesn't.
You know, sin comes in a lot ofdifferent shapes, sizes and
colors.
It literally means miss themark.
So we're all trying to walk innewness of life and, dedicated
to the scriptures and to the wayof the master.
We want to walk in his ways.
We're going to walk with Elohim.
We've covenanted with him.
We're going to pitch in hisways.
We're going to walk with Elohim.
We've covenanted with him.

(01:25):
We're going to pitch our tentwith him.
He's pitching our tent with us.
We're going to do his things.
This is what goes all the wayback to the 12 tribes, when they
came out of Egypt.
Anybody was accepted, anybodycould come to the mountain to
receive the word.
It wasn't just Jews, it wasn'tjust Judah.

(01:47):
It was Judah, it was Benjamin,it was Ephraim, it was, you know
, manasseh.
It was all of those parts ofthe tribe, the 12 tribes, all
the kindred tribes, and then thesojourner.
So the sojourner coverseveryone.
So these smart Egyptians whodecided to get out of Egypt
because they saw what was coming, they went with the Israelites,

(02:09):
they were accepted.
All they had to do was followthe way, and that's what we're
all trying to do follow the way.
And when we miss the mark, whenwe fail, for whatever reason and
it's more than just your deedsthis is what Jesus, yeshua,
taught us when he was here.
He said that if you have lookedupon another woman, if you're a
man and you look upon anotherwoman, as you know, in with lust

(02:35):
in your heart.
You've committed adultery ifyou're married.
You've committed fornication ifyou're not.
But sin is in the heart, theheart.
So the intention of the sinhappens long before the deed.
Now that's what we're trying, then, to do, is we're all trying
to overcome the temptations todo wrong things, and so sin

(02:56):
could be being mean and hurtfulto somebody you know.
It's anything that you know tobe good and you don't do it.
That's sin at its very organic, atomic level.
So this is a guide forovercoming temptation, because
temptation is what leads us tosin usually.

(03:19):
So this is how to defeattemptation with God's Word.
First, understanding temptation.
In James 1, 13-14, let no onesay, when he is tempted, I am
tempted by God, for God cannotbe tempted by evil, nor does he

(03:39):
himself tempt anyone, but eachone is tempted when he is drawn
away by his own desires andenticed.
Here's a reflection Recognizethat temptation originates from
our desires, not from God.
Acknowledging this can helptake responsibility for
resisting temptation.
All right.

(04:00):
So what does that say?
That means that first we needto understand what is temptation
.
Where does it come from?
Is it coming from God?
Of course not.
Is it coming from the devil.
Yeah, you bet, sometimes fierydarts fires a thought that you
get into your head that it'slike where the hell did that

(04:22):
come from?
That's not who I am.
These things happen and that'sa fiery dart from the enemy.
And so when that is, but whathappens?
There is that thought, then you, you, you entertain it and it
gives rise to the From our owndesire, the source of sin.

(04:46):
Okay, so it's desire.
So it's not from Satan himself,it's just that he entices you.
So, number two, relying on God'sstrength.
So in 1 Corinthians, 10, 13, notemptation is overtaken.
You, except as such is commonto man.
God is faithful, who will notallow you to be tempted beyond

(05:07):
what you're able, but with thetemptation, will also make the
way of escape that you may beable to bear it.
So God promises that everytemptation will have a way out.
Trust in his faithfulness andlook for the escape he provides.
So when you're tempted, whenyou have a desire that you know

(05:28):
is wrong, then you look for thedoor, because God is going to
give you one.
You look for the way out.
All right, do I flee?
Do I just keep my head down?
Do I turn on the music?
Change the subject.
Read a book.
Whatever you feel like you needto do at that moment to resist,
do it.

(05:49):
Next, we're going to use God'snumber three.
Use God's word as a defenseMatthew 4.4,.
But he answered and said it iswritten man shall not live by
bread alone, but by every wordthat proceeds from the mouth of
God.
Jesus used scripture to combatSatan's temptations.

(06:09):
Memorize and meditate on theword to strengthen your resolve
and use it as a weapon inspiritual battles.
So when one of those fierydarts comes into your mind, you
have word to overcome it.
You know Satan, hasatan theenemy, was tempting our Lord by
saying look, just turn thisstone into bread.

(06:33):
You're hungry, you're starving,you need to eat.
Pleasure yourself.
Yeshua says no, it is written.
Man shall not live by breadalone, but by every word that
proceeds out of the mouth of God.
He tempted him in a lot ofother ways.
You know he took him up on ahigh place and said I'll give
you the whole world.
All you got to do is bow downand worship me.

(06:53):
And again Yeshua answered in,it is written.
It is written.
So.
Number four so let's reflect.
Okay, so understandingtemptation number one.
Relying on.
Let's reflect.
Okay, so, understandingtemptation.
Number one, relying on God'sstrength.
Number two, using God's word asa defense.

(07:15):
Number three and now numberfour, praying for protection.
Matthew 26, 41,.
Watch and pray lest you enterinto temptation.
The spirit, indeed, is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Prayer is essential in fightingflesh is weak.
Prayer is essential in fightingtemptation.
Acknowledge your weakness andask God for the strength and
vigilance needed to resist.

(07:35):
The spirit is willing, but theflesh is weak.
This goes back to Paul inRomans.
It talks about, basically, thetwo big dogs the dark and the
light.
You know, you want to focus onthe good, you want to focus on
what you want.
You want to focus on the spirit, walking in the spirit,

(07:59):
understanding that your fleshhas been put to death in the
cross.
Number five guarding your heartand mind.
In Philippians 4.8,.
Finally, brethren, whateverthings there are that are true,
whatever things are noble, whatever things are just,
whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely,

(08:23):
whatever things are of good, report if there's any virtue, if
there's anything praiseworthy, meditate on these things.
Focus on thoughts that alignwith God's values.
What you dwell on in your mindcan either strengthen or weaken
your resistance to temptation.
Don't be a gossip.

(08:43):
Try not to be negative.
Try not to surround yourselfwith negative people.
Try not to criticize others toomuch.
Be more kind.
Be more understanding.
Be more quiet.
If you're nagging and harping, just shut up, listen.

(09:04):
Try to focus on things that aregood.
Don't find the bad, find thegood, find the silver lining.
What in the world couldpossibly be good about this
situation?
Number six submitting to God andresisting the devil.

(09:26):
James 4, 7,.
Therefore, submit to God,resist the devil and he will
flee from you.
Resisting temptation requiresboth submission to God's
authority and active resistanceagainst the enemy's influence.
When you draw near to God, hedraws near to you.
So just focus on the wordsubmit to God and always resist

(09:50):
the devil.
You know when something's comingin at you, especially if it's
like a fiery dart in your mindthat shows up and you know
that's not anything you wouldthink.
I mean it's like we all havethem.
They're impulses Like stickyour hand on the hot stove, you
know, run out in front of thatcar.
These are stupid impulses andI'm sure there's a perfectly

(10:11):
sane and reasonable and cogentunderstanding from psychology or
whatever.
But we all have them.
But sometimes they're moredirected toward a particular
situation and those are the onesthat we need to resist and

(10:33):
recognize.
So number seven is confessionand accountability.
1 John 1.9,.
If we confess our sins, he isfaithful and just to forgive us
our sins and to cleanse us fromall unrighteousness.
When you stumble, don't stay inguilt.
Confess to God and seekforgiveness.
Consider finding a trustedperson to keep you accountable

(10:56):
in areas where you struggle.
So sometimes community isrequired.
You know this is whatAlcoholics Anonymous is all
about.
Aa, you know, it's beingaccountable, admitting what the
problem is and then taking stepsfor a lifelong resolution.
Because once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic, addictive

(11:19):
personalities and theseaddictions, once they've
entrapped you, they own you.
So we can overcome addictionjust by overcoming temptation,
because temptation is athreshold to addiction, just

(11:40):
like sin is a threshold to death.
So let's go with number eightwalking in the Spirit.
Galatians 5.16,.
I say then, walk in the Spiritand you shall not fulfill the
lust of the flesh.
Daily communion with the HolySpirit enables you to live
according to God's desires, making it easier to resist the

(12:02):
pull of the flesh.
What you dwell on, what youthink about, what you walk into
in your life, is what becomesstronger.
So walk into the word, walkinto spirit, walk into holiness.
Dedication, following his waysyou know.
Keep his Sabbath follow.

(12:23):
Look at the 10 commandments.
That's the basic place weshould go as as a guide as to
what we're supposed to be doing.
The Ten Commandments you knowdon't be idolatrous, don't be
hateful, because hate in yourheart is murder and again it

(12:47):
goes back to pure intention.
So walk in the Spirit.
Number nine focus on the reward.
Hebrews 12, 1-2.
Let us lay aside every weightand the sin which so easily
ensnares us and let us run withendurance that race that is set
before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our
faith.
Keep your eyes on Jesus andeternal reward awaits you.

(13:11):
Remembering the joy set beforeyou can motivate you to endure
trials and resist temporarypleasures, though sin, which so
easily besets us and ensnares us.
And this is a guide how todefeat and how to escape the
snare.
Number one understand temptation.

(13:32):
Number two rely on God'sstrength.
Number three use God's word asa defense.
Number four pray for protection, pray, watch and pray.
Guard your heart and mind.

(13:59):
Look at the good things in life, think about what's lovely,
noble, submit to God and resistthe devil.
Resist the devil and he willflee from you.
Look for that door.

(14:19):
Confession and accountability.
Number seven Confess your sinand he will forgive you.
Walk in the Spirit.
If you walk in the Spirit, youwon't fulfill the lust of the
flesh.
Focus on the reward.
He, the Messiah, jesus, yeshua.

(14:44):
He is the author of your faithand, more importantly, he's the
finisher of your faith.
That means it's cradle to grave.
That means he takes you and hekeeps you.
He said that not one of thosewho was given to me I have lost,
but only Judas, the son ofperdition, who allowed Satan to

(15:06):
enter his heart and betray Nowthat I'll resume next week maybe
.
I mean honestly.
I didn't do this to see how manypeople I could get to listen to
my podcast.
I did this because I felt it onthe heart to do it and I

(15:33):
curated this devotional.
This devotional is meant togive a daily dose, a brief daily
dose.
I know we're busy, don't alwayshave time, but you can always
take 10-15 minutes to listen toGod's word and to see if you can
find places in there where itcan help you with your daily

(15:53):
walk.
But I haven't had a lot ofresponse.
There are a few peoplelistening and that's okay, but I
haven't had a lot of response.
You know there are a few peoplelistening, and that's okay.
Like I said, I don't care ifnobody listens, but I'm looking.
Also, I want to make sure thatI'm attended to the Word of God.

(16:14):
I don't want to be puttingsomething out there that
absolutely has no interest.
Nobody cares, nobody wants toknow, or is it just so bad that
nobody wants?
I don't know.
I just think that maybe peopledon't like being read to, and I
do a fair amount of just readingthrough the devotional.
So maybe I need to be morespontaneous and I'll work on

(16:37):
that.
That's what I'm trying to beright here now with this, and I
hope this guide is helpful.
I'll be using it.
Escaping the Snare those are thenine steps to escaping the
snare, so I'm going to end inprayer.
Father God, thank you for yourmercy, thank you for your

(16:57):
beautiful Sabbath that you'vegiven us to walk in your ways,
to hear your words, that we canlook unto you, the author and
finisher of our faith, toovercome temptation, to walk in
the Spirit.
We praise you.
We pray for each and everyperson that's listening right

(17:17):
now that they'll have thosewords in their heart from you,
that they'll recognize and knowwhat to do with temptation.
In Yeshua's name, we pray thisAmen.
