Abbott: I say Who’s on first, What’s on second, I Don’t Know’s on third. Costello: Are you the manager? Abbott: Yes. The document is a script of the classic comedy routine Who's on First performed by Abbott and Costello. In the routine, Costello tries to find out the names of the players on Abbott's baseball team but Abbott insists on using strange names like Who for the first baseman, confusing Costello. They go back and forth with Abbott refusing to clarify who is playing each position, leading to more. COSTELLO: At what time tomorrow are you going to tell me who’s pitching? ABBOTT: Now listen, Who is not pitching. Who is on COSTELLO: I’ll break your arm you say who’s on first! I want to know, what’s the pitcher’s name? ABBOTT: What’s on second! COSTELLO: I don’t know! Both: Third base! (Pause). Who’s On First This is a gimmick square dance figure that was popular for a time about years ago called “Who’s On First”. It is a take-off on the old Laurel and Hardy routine about baseball. As the routine progresses, different people are in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions in the square.
