Speaker 1 (00:04):
Hey Jeanette, Hi Rachel.
We are getting towards the veryend of 2024, and we are going
to share today why New Jersey isawesome, based on what all of
our interviewees have said, andalso give you our top winning
shout outs.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Right Every episode or almost every episode.
Sometimes we forget, sometimeswe do forget.
We do forget sometimes becausewe get really involved in the
conversation or the conversationis going long or something like
that.
But we will ask at the very endgive us a shout out to
something person, place or thingthat you love about New Jersey.
We sometimes get things thatwe've heard over and over and

(00:46):
those are going to be ourwinners is what we have heard
multiple times, been giving ashout out, but we also have
heard things that are different, like characteristics, so we
thought we'd split it up and totell you what are some of the
characteristics that we havebeen given that people love
about New Jersey, and then we'lltell you the places that people

(01:06):
love.
Okay, so this is going to be acharacteristic.
Yes, what is the number onething that you have heard people
say they love about New Jersey?

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Diversity diversity, yeah, and I think they mean a
lot of things by that, like it'sa rich mix of people and
cultures and backgrounds, of howyou know we're not everyone
obviously grew up here, even thelike topography and the
agriculture and the weather, andthere's just diversity of

(01:34):
everything here, yeah there is.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
I think that that's it the food, everything People
really love, the diversity, sothat was the number one.
We kept hearing over and overthat that was number two.
Yeah, yeah.
What was number two?
Natural beauty?
Yes, it is, cause people don'tbelieve it.
People don't believe that it'sall like oil refineries and

(01:57):
pharmaceutical companies orsomething, because they've
driven through the main route, you know the New Jersey Turnpike
and nine and one and all ofthose highways and they do run
past a lot of that stuff.
But as soon as you get awayfrom that it's just breathtaking
.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
Yes, and not only the trees are so amazing, but lakes
, mountains, beaches yeah, youhave it all skiing, swimming,
canoeing, hiking, all of it andthat so many people have brought
that up.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
So that is an unknown thing.
That people really love andhave mentioned a lot is that you
go with the next one.
Oh, I think this one's alwayskind of funny when people say
that.
I've heard some people say somefunny things like the
accessibility about traveling.
You can get anywhere from herethat you are not, you're not
landlocked in any way, or youknow, you're not an Island off

(02:52):
by itself that you have to get.
You can take the airport.
You've got easy access toEurope, the world, by plane.
You can get out West.
You can get to this big cities.
You can get to the countrysideyeah, who knew that?
Newark you can get to thecountryside.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
Yeah, who knew that Newark Liberty airport would get
a shout out?
And it's getting better, whichis really interesting.
You have a really new terminalduring COVID.
They made the most of COVID.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Built a whole new terminal.
I know it's not so bad anymore.
When you go you're like oh,okay, I'll hang out a little,
all right.
So and then the authenticity isnumber four on our list out of
five of the characteristics yes,so the authenticity.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
So people always say they love how New Jerseyans are
resilient, they have grit, theytell it like it is.
They're not going to like talkaround something.
They're just going to be openand honest and blunt.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
And some people don't like that but it's a good thing
, well, and also, I think, bythe grit, is that that they also
have this awareness by being soclose to these large cities,
specifically New York city, they're around people who have
had a lot of success.
It's not abstract for NewJerseyans to be around.

(04:07):
You know people that have a lotof success and they know it's
possible, and so they have thisgrit that I can get it done.
I see it here, my neighbor andI can do attitude.
That's right.
What's our last of ourcharacteristics?

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Our community and culture.
So people feel a strong senseof pride in their local
communities.
They are very active.
Whether or not they're activein, like, going to a town
council meeting or they're justactive in supporting the local
arts or going supporting thelocal restaurants, being
involved in the schools,Everybody really rallies to be a

(04:43):
part of their local community.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, yeah, I think that that was like a strong
thing is that people feel likemaybe they got lost when they
were living in New York city, there wasn't like a community.
But once they moved to NewJersey and to one of their you
know suburb towns, they feltlike they found something.
You know and we've heard that alot, especially with Stacey
Rubis' interview how she reallykind of found her success by
finding her community here, inMontclair at the Wachong

(05:12):
Bookstore, which we'll talkabout a little bit later, about
community, and she really, really drove home how important
that is, and especially thecommunity.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
I love that yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Yeah, all right.
So that is the kind of theabstract kind of idea of what
people love about New Jersey.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
So more concrete places to go.
So if you're not from NewJersey and you haven't been here
and you keep hearing on ourpodcast all these wonderful
places, it's worth the visit.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
Yeah, it is Well especially.
You know, we're based out ofMontclair, new Jersey, and we're
known as a food food town andthey have a lot of great, great
restaurants and we hear aboutthem all the time and we've been
to most of them.
Yes, we have a lot of guestsalso on from the northern New
Jersey Montclair area and so wehear a lot of these restaurants.

(06:03):
So we um some of most of themwe've gone to and what we're
going to do is we're going toput on our website all the shout
outs of all of the places thathave been mentioned.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
So definitely look at our Instagram.
We're really promoting thatbecause Jeanette has done an
incredible job on that Instagramaccount.
It's beautiful, it's fun, andwe did these pop-ins so Jeanette
would go into these differentboutiques and stores up.
We did upper Montclair.
So far we haven't made it yetto the rest of Montclair, but it

(06:33):
gives you a really greatfeeling and idea of what is
inside so that you can make itworth your while to go there.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
So let's go ahead and do our top 10 of our shout outs
.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
Okay, you start for everything else Go online, right
?

Speaker 2 (06:48):
Yeah, I'll start with number 10.
10 is our online listener pick.
It was pink bungalow.
It got the most activity andthe most love from all of the
ones that we did uptown andupper Montclair, so we want to
give them a top 10 listing.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
And they're a very cute gift shop.
You can find anything fromcandles to serving pieces for
hostess gifts to cute mugs ofyour town jewelry, scarves,
socks, candles all of it,everything is there, everything
is there, everything is there.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
And you know, there's several of those kind of stores
that we did pop-ins and I lovethem all, and this one, just by
a hair, had a little more and wehad to narrow it to top 10.
So it was just that's why PinkPungalo made it on there, and it
is definitely.
You go in there, you'll see why.
You'll see why.
Yeah, it's a great store.

(07:46):
The next one is a pizza placethat you are familiar with.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Yes, it is brick and dough pizza also in Montclair,
and it is delicious.
It's so good.
You all I know this isn't pizza, but you need to get their
Brussels sprouts.
They're like.
You all I know this isn't pizzabut you need to get their
Brussels sprouts.
They're like I love Brussels.
They have like roasted Brusselssprouts.
Roasted Brussels sprouts withthis like sauce on it.

(08:16):
That is not not like a sauce,it's um well, kind of, but it's
so flavorful I can't.
I can't describe it, but it isa favorite and the pizzas are
delicious and creative and thedough is actually just oh, it's
so good look, I just want tojust say it's funny that we're
talking about pizza, which iskind of known like just if you
just think about it in theabstract pizza, and then you
throw brussels sprouts in there.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
I'm so sorry everybody that really just.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
Yeah, they don't seem to go together but I know, but
it they really?

Speaker 2 (08:46):
I mean, I think brussel, brussel sprouts are
surprisingly popular now andthey're probably good, so you
feel good about yourself.
You had a big slice of pizzaand you have some brussels
sprouts, brussels.
Maybe that's why it's in thetop 10, okay, okay.
So what about number eight?
I'm not sure how to say it.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Basketto on Grove Street and it is gotten a lot of
shout outs.
Obviously it's new-ish and justthe ingredients are super,
super fresh.
The pastas are beautiful, thesalads are great.
Fried zucchini chips huge hitin my house.
I think June is addicted.
It's like upscale food but it'sa chill vibe and you order at
the counter and then they bringit to you.
So it's really laid back, butwith quality ingredients and

(09:38):
it's really pretty inside too.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Yeah, Giotto's is number seven.
Okay, so this is the kind of aneasy.
Everybody likes this place,Even my picky eater boys.
They find something that theylike there and it's just good.
You know, it's just very good, light, Italian, fair kind of
food.
I guess you'd say it's like andit's just a great vibe, and I

(10:04):
mean it's just.
There's a reason people it's on.
Church Street.
It's on Church Street, yeah, and then I Okay.
So number six is a bakery slashcafe kind of place.
It's the French dad, I think itwas on the list last year as
well.
A lot of people love this place, you know.
You can't go wrong.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
You can get your croissant there, baguettes, your
baguettes, tarte aux creuses.
Yes, yes, macaron.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
Macaron.
They have a lot of those, so itis very French, but yet without
the French.
Yeah.
There's no attitude, it's justlike warm and cozy, more like
fun.
It's more like a fun place, sothat place is great.
Okay, now away from the foodfor just a brief moment.
We have the MC hotel, and whydo we have it on air?

(10:52):
Because it's been mentionedseveral times and and I think
the general manager of theWellmont was they have a rooftop
that has a view of.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
Manhattan and a bar, and sometimes they have a DJ up
there, so it's a it's a greataddition.

Speaker 2 (11:23):
Yeah, it's not super fancy, you know, it's just.
It's just kind of like anaccessible.
I mean they may have some superfancy rooms, I don't know, I
haven't stayed there, but I'vebeen there.
And then number four has to beon this list, because we find
ourselves there quite a bitMarcel's it is amazing.

Speaker 1 (11:42):
It's just.
I love the owner.
It has such good vibes in there.
It's fantastic coffee,delicious food, unbelievable
delicious Israeli Middle Easternfood, and you cannot go wrong.
I've never gotten a bad mealthere, yeah.
Casual breakfast, lunch place, kind of mid afternoon and great

(12:06):
to order from for catering aswell.
Yeah, or?

Speaker 2 (12:09):
just go for a coffee, you know it's great.
Okay, zuma, yes, okay, zuma isnumber three on park street.
Yep, and we were mentioningthis place has been around for a
while and it kind of came andit was a little bit quiet for a
couple of years, I think.
People went, but a couple oftimes when I went it didn't seem
like it was really that packedand I didn't really know what

(12:32):
was going on.
But the food was good.
I didn't understand.
And then it's slowly over thelast few years it's just been
talked about more packed, more.
Now you need reservations, youknow it's.
The food is stellar and theservice is impeccable and it's
not stuffy in any way.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
No, and it's like a lively atmosphere there.
It's upbeat, delicious.
They don't rush you thequestion is?

Speaker 2 (13:01):
is it Greek?
Is it it's Mediterranean?
I?

Speaker 1 (13:05):
think it's a little bit.
It's Mediterranean, it's alittle bit of, a little bit of a
few things.
A little bit of this, a littlebit of that.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
It's Mediterranean-ish, you know.
It's like yeah, so it's verygood and we definitely love a
good night out there.
Now it's like I'm so glad tosee a restaurant.
It kind of did the you know alittle rise.
They're really up there.
So definitely our number three.
So number two go for it Paperplane, paper plane, paper plane

(13:36):
coffee.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
People also really like that episode that we had
interviewing them.
Yeah, they have really creativecoffees there and they have not
just, you know, espresso baseddrinks, they have pour over.
They have all kinds Like, ifyou want to try the newest
coffee craze or just somethinginteresting besides just a
regular coffee, go there and askthem for advice.

(13:59):
Yeah, it's a great place.

Speaker 2 (14:02):
And it's just a fun vibe, it paid the atmosphere.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
It's just the coolest , yes.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
And also just to let you know that there were quite a
few shout outs by the ownerwhen he came on and did his
episodes.
So they are on our website andyou can take a look, along with
all the other places that werecommend based on our guests,
and they all have good taste, you know.

Speaker 1 (14:28):
And without further ado.

Speaker 2 (14:29):
I will let you have the honor of naming the most
shouted out place throughout theyear 2024 on Lost in Jersey.

Speaker 1 (14:38):
It is Wachung Booksellers yes, yes, they get
the most shout outs.
They also have a podcast nowand it is fabulous, so go
subscribe to that as well.
It is a phenomenal communitybookstore that has been here for
a while and really took care ofus during COVID by leaving

(15:02):
books outdoors in a bag that youcould call an order with your
name on it through COVID to now,and they're just wonderful.
And they've expanded to havethat little few doors down to
have a children's store, achildren's room.
So it's fabulous.
Everybody loves it, for goodreason.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
Everyone who has had a brush with it, whether they go
there all the time or not.
Like me, I don't go there allthe time, but every time I go in
there I'm like I should becoming here more.
