Today I want to talk about a critique I see all the time in the horror community. You see it in reviews, Reddit threads, BookTube comments—people asking for recommendations that will finally, actually, really scare them, like there’s one perfect book out there that’ll do the trick. Some seem to have bought into marketing and literally want a white-knuckled thrill-ride of scares... and that might just be impossible. Fear is incredibly personal, and what terrified one reader might feel totally flat to someone else. And more importantly most seasoned horror readers aren’t actually looking to be scared every time. This is just the genre and the themes they enjoy. It’s not always about fear—it’s about atmosphere, tension, projection, characters, and dark imagination. So I’ve pulled together seven reasons why horror novels might not be scaring you anymore—and why that’s not necessarily a bad thing.Let me know in the comments what the last book was that genuinely creeped you out—or if like me, you think horror doesn’t have to actually scare you to be great.
