Unknown (00:45):
Macabrepedia makes
light of dark subject matters
and may not be suitable for allaudiences. Listener discretion
is advised.
There are a variety of ways tosummon Bloody Mary, you can
summon Bloody Mary Well, in thiscase, she's called Hail Mary.
And most versions you aresupposed to go into a bathroom
(01:05):
and turn off all the lights. Thenext thing you do is say Hail
Mary seven times after the thirdtime the mirror is supposed to
go completely red. Then once youhave reached the seventh, or the
final Hail Mary, you are goingto see an evil morphed blurry
figure in the mirror. A lot ofpeople will say it's bloody
(01:26):
Mary, and others think it'sSatan. Another way of summoning
Bloody Mary is that you aresupposed to go into a room with
with a handheld mirror. And onceagain, it needs to be dark with
a little source of light. Onceyou have done that, you begin to
say Buddy was Bloody Mary's name13 times each time you
(01:49):
progressively get louder. Sostart with a whisper. As you
begin to see the chant. Youstart to spin so slowly. When
you have finished the chant, youshould see her bloody Mary in
the handheld mirror. There are alot more ways to summon her. But
these are just two examples.
Just so you know. Just so youknow, summoning her can have
(02:10):
very serious consequences. So dothis at your own risk. And
whatever you do, don't break themirror after summoning her.
Matthew (02:21):
Hello and welcome to
Macabrepedia a marriage of true
crime and the truly bizarre Thisis a special Patreon episode.
And today we are not your hostsMatthew and Marissa.
Marissa (02:35):
No we are not today
we're being replaced.
Matthew (02:38):
Oh man.
Marissa (02:39):
Now we are being joined
in studio today by two very
special guests Saiga and Alyssaand so I can Alyssa are my
stepdaughters and Matt'sdaughters so they're going to
treat you to some stories today.
And so I think Psych is startingus out.
Matthew (02:55):
We're discussing today
the origins of what was what is
the urban legend often played?
On slumber parties a staple ofslumber parties all across at
least this country where peopleare dared to go into bathrooms
and say Bloody Mary into thedarkness.
Marissa (03:17):
Bloody Mary I used to
do when I was a kid. So this is
still going strong.
Matthew (03:22):
And you are here to
tell the tale. You must not have
broken the mirror.
Marissa (03:28):
I survived. Let's let's
learn a little bit more about
it.
Matthew (03:31):
So there are a few
origin stories to the Bloody
Mary urban legend. And psych ayou have a couple of these a
couple of these stories. Sobefore we get into that, tell us
tell us a little bit aboutyourself that opening that
opening was done by Alyssa Goodjob. Did a smashing cold open.
(03:55):
Alyssa will tell us a little bitof tell us a little bit about
yourself. Um, what do you do?
What do you do?
Unknown (04:04):
I like skateboarding
and gaming. That's quite
literally my life. So Oh good.
Matthew (04:10):
Oh, that's that's fair.
And cyca
Unknown (04:15):
um, I like reading
manga watching anime and
listening to BTS.
Matthew (04:21):
BTS being the Korean
pop sensation. Yo. And Alyssa
What's your game of choice rightnow? Are you still doing the
fortnight or apex or what areyou on at this point?
Unknown (04:36):
I am playing Apex more
often and some of Minecraft. Oh,
don't really touch fortnightanymore.
Matthew (04:45):
No, that's so that's
and psych What are a couple of
your favorite animes at themoment.
Unknown (04:54):
At the moment I am
watching Attack on Titan and I
think it's a really, reallyreally good anime. And I think
my second enemy of choice wouldbe Hunter Hunter. Nice.
Marissa (05:09):
Um, watched either one
of those.
Matthew (05:12):
I watched like the
first season and a half of
Attack on Titan
Marissa (05:15):
I've heard it was good
though.
Matthew (05:16):
The animation is
amazing. I have never played
apex. I'm not really a firstperson shooter kind of person
playing a lot of Minecraft. Sookay, well with without taking
any more time away from thestory. First of all, I do want
to thank all of our patrons forbeing patrons. And this is a
(05:39):
little special thing that we'vekind of figured, would again,
kind of be just a fun, a funlittle additive and osika. And
Alyssa had just, we had we werewe she they had just found out
that we had a podcast as we werestanding in line at the craft
store, getting supplies to makethem their own life slash death
(06:02):
masks. And Alyssa had made acomment about crime junkies, the
pot her true crime podcast ofchoice. And then they were
talking about needing to findmore more podcasts in that vein,
and I said, Well, I have asuggestion for you. Have you
(06:24):
heard of Macabrepedia? Of coursethey had not. So yeah, so then
we got in, which is, you know, not advised for all audiences,
but whatever. So now and thenwe've figured that we give them
a little a little shot at theshot at the table and at the
microphones and see what seewhat they come up with. So this
(06:46):
is this is the topic that theydecided to do, which is Bloody
Mary. And so without any furtherado, tell us cyca one of the
origins of this bloody bloodiestof Mary's
Unknown (07:00):
All right, so back in
the 1800s, there was a girl
named Mary, the place where shelived had an illness, illness
wash over the place, thisillness was said to make people
drop dead in a short period oftime, physicians couldn't find a
pulse. So they used a smallmirror and put it under their
(07:21):
nose of the dead. So they wouldsee if there was any
condensation coming from theirnoses. There were cases when a
person seemed to have not have apulse, but when they did the
mirror trick, there was somecondensation. So when the person
(07:44):
was pronounced dead, they wouldput a small hole in the coffin
and put a piece of stringthrough the hole that was
attached to a bell, the bellhung on a stick by the health
homes of the deceased. And ifthey were to have waken up
woken, they would just ring thebell and someone would come pick
(08:05):
them up. Mary was one of thevictims. She was bedridden, then
slowly died and put in a coffinbut not put into the ground just
yet. But she still didn't wakeup. Mary's parents friends began
to say if she doesn't wake upnow, she will never. One day the
(08:25):
parents left the house and afriend buried Mary and went
home. Mary woke up and startedringing the bell but nobody was
there to hear it. And then herbelt fell. And she began
scratching at her coffin untilher fingers bled. And she took
her last breath. Mary's fathernoticed that the bell was yards
(08:49):
away from their house, and theydug her up but she was dead.
They put a mirror up to hernose, but she was long gone.
They said her spirit is attachedto the mirror and whoever calls
Bloody Mary three times shewould come and claw at her
victims.
Matthew (09:06):
That's pretty gruesome.
Yeah, very alive.
Marissa (09:10):
They tried to stop that
was the bell but it did not
work. That's just even worse.
Matthew (09:15):
Yeah, they. So a couple
pieces, little, little, little
tidbits to put into there. So itis common. It is common to do
what's called a wake, you know,or an observance. Sometimes it
would be called or somethingalong those lines. And what that
would do is you after the personhad died, or been pronounced
(09:38):
dead, they would have the bodyon display in the house. And
people would come and say theirfinal respects there or
whatever. But it was also a timeto just make sure that the
person was actually dead. Beforethey were put into the ground
and then the bell thing theywould put a put a bell like a
(09:59):
string around their finger sothat if they woke up and started
twitching at all, it would ringa bell above their grave and
then they could dig it up. WhichI don't actually know if that's
actually I sent that folklore onits own.
Marissa (10:13):
I think it is but yeah,
so interesting.
Matthew (10:16):
Yeah, I mean it'd be
but but in that same thing
though also, capturing people'ssouls in mirrors is a popular
folklore as well. So during whenthe once a person has died
within a house, it's traditionto go around the house and cover
all reflected surfaces so thatthe Spirit can can escape the
(10:37):
house because it's believed thatMears trapped souls that's kind
of part of the through line withall of all of the Bloody Mary
things but but there was inhistory, an actual Bloody Mary.
And you have something on thattonight,
Unknown (10:55):
yo, I do. Alright, on
February 18 1516, Mary was born.
Her parents were expecting Maryto be a boy. When Mary was 18,
her parents separated becauseMary's father Henry the Eighth
(11:16):
became obsessed with AnneBoleyn, which led to Mary's
mother Catherine of Aragon, andher father Henry, the eighth
divorcing, which led to him tobreak from the Catholic Church.
Marissa (11:33):
Oh, yeah. So like this
was, this was Major. I mean,
this is it still takes place alot in pop culture. There's a
lot of movies and stuff that aredone about this. But Henry, he
had six wives. He had, he didthe little rhyme is divorced,
beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded survived, because the
(11:54):
first one he divorced the secondone he beheaded you know, etc.
So his first wife was Catherineof Aragon, who was married
mother, Mary had like, five orsix pregnancies and stillbirths
that the miscarriages andstillbirths so she tried to give
this on a king which was hiswhole thing he really Eric Assan
because this is what he wanted.
He wanted his son to carry onhis life because as the king he
(12:16):
wants someone to be the nextking. And Mary was not quite
good enough because she was awoman. So that's that's part of
I think, Mary's bitterness whenshe grew up, but uh, yeah, so
he, he got became obsessed withAmberlynn and Amberlynn
partially but also Henry kind ofwanted to do it anyway, handle
(12:37):
and partially influenced him tocreate the Church of England. So
they did break from the CatholicChurch because the pope refused
to give a divorce to Henry fromCatherine Barragan. So that is
the history of that. And then ofcourse, later, Mary was raised
Catholic. So that's a lot ofwhat comes in later.
Matthew (12:56):
Right? Because her
mother was Catholic, very much,
very, very devout. So but yeah,he had to make his own, make his
own church in order to make itso that you get an annulment?
Yep.
Unknown (13:11):
All right, and 1536
after an Berlin's execution,
Henry married James Seymour.
Mary had three other stepmothersMary's younger half brother,
Edward the six takes the throneas a Protestant, Protestant
reformer. Six years later,Edward passed away, Edward tried
(13:35):
to change his father's wishesand tried leaving the crown to
his Protestant cousin, ElaineJane, Lady Jane Grey, Grey,
excluding the ones next in lineto receive the crown, married
stayed in England and fought forwhat was rightfully hers. Mary
(13:55):
gathered support from the noblesacross the country and marched
on London, Mary and her youngerhalf sister Elizabeth had rode
into England's Capitol togetherduring during Mary's five year
reign, she navigated throughchallenges, and she was the
first queen to wear the crown inher own right without having be
(14:19):
without being a wife of theking. Mary prioritize religion
above all else, she aim torestoring the Catholic Church.
ascendancy in England. She alsoordered 280 Protestants burned
(14:39):
at the stake as heretics.
Matthew (14:43):
Oh yeah, that's
probably where the bloody part
comes from. We were we were wewere pretty bloodless up until
up until this.
Unknown (14:50):
This is how she became
known as Bloody Mary. Mary died
at the age of 42 and 15 fit 58by the cause. Have Purinton
cancer uterine uterine cancer?
And Elizabeth claim the thronesince Mary failed to have a
child of her own.
Marissa (15:11):
Yeah, I actually don't
think she was bloodless before
that because she executed hercousin Lady Jane Grey.
Matthew (15:17):
Oh, yeah, I was just
talking about for this
particular story, the whole thewhole two door.
Marissa (15:21):
The whole thing's
bloody
Matthew (15:23):
bloody Yeah,
everybody's dying. We referenced
a couple of Henry moments andsome of our other episodes as
Marissa (15:30):
well. But yeah, and
summary is pretty sad character,
actually. I mean, she, you know, she she grew up the princess,
the apple of her father's eye.
And then her father decided thathe wanted to marry someone else.
And so that, I mean, think aboutit. If your parent decides
they're going to divorce theiryou know, your other parent, but
(15:52):
you'll never be able to see thatparent ever against Mary was
never able to see her motherever again after this point.
Like she's got to be sad. She'sgot to be sad. And then when she
gets she becomes queen. She alsotries to give birth and just
doesn't work out for her. Shehad uterine cancer, she thought
she was pregnant, but it endedup being a tumor. So that's
(16:13):
rough. But be I mean, Elizabethsucceeded and Elizabeth was the
Virgin Queen and she was on thethrone for a very long time. So
Matthew (16:26):
Queen Elizabeth is one
of the most famous English
queens in history. She wasAmberlynn Sutter. She's the one
who you often see depicted withlike the fiery red hair and the
pale pale white skin, which wasultimately what kills her. But
yeah, that was well done quicknice little research little bits
(16:49):
is very good. Yeah. And thenwhen maybe there'll be a couple
of podcasters in the future. Butyeah, and then I depending on on
how the the upcoming episodepans out. They may be there for
that as well because I know thatAlyssa particularly spends a lot
(17:11):
of time or at least used tospend a lot of time watching
ghost stories and seances andsome of her favorite YouTubers
going into murder scenes. Andyou know trying to contact
spirits in our next episode ison seances and spiritualism and
all that interesting subjectthere. I may have actually
(17:32):
referenced your I think it wasin the Lizzie Borden episode. I
think I referenced watching theSAM and Colby episode that you
that Alyssa had watched. Guysdon't have to be quite so quiet.
You're just there. They'revigorously nodding. But not
speaking into the microphone.
But no, that was that was reallygood. Thank you for sharing
(17:56):
those stories. And now we're allgoing to have a seance and then
go into a dark room and try tosummon summon Bloody Mary to
tear out the eyes of ourenemies.
Marissa (18:12):
So we may not be here
for the next episode depending
on how that goes.
Matthew (18:16):
But thank you as always
for joining us on this Patreon
episode. And join us for thereal I guess real episode I
don't know we never really endedlike quite as we don't really do
the whole whole shebang like wedid for this one. But as always,
thank you for listening and joinus Mondays for another entry
(18:39):
into this our Macabrepedia we'renot all whispering
Marissa (18:43):
