Summary: Montana property owners sued the United States under the Quiet Title Act, alleging that the Government's 1962 road easement on their property did not permit public access. The Government successfully moved to dismiss for lack of subject-matter jurisdiction, arguing that the property owners' claim was barred by the Act's 12-year time bar. The intermediate appellate court affirmed. SCOTUS held that the Act's 12-year provision was a nonjurisdictional claims-processing rule and, thus, reversed and remanded.
