Most life coaches struggle in the beginning — not because they’re bad at coaching, but because of three sneaky mistakes that quietly block discovery calls and paying clients.

In this episode, I’ll break down:

  • Why calling yourself a life coach is too broad and keeps clients confused
  • The comparison trap that makes your offer feel less valuable than other coaches
  • How fuzzy messaging kills sales — and what to say instead so people book with you

And here’s the good news: each of these problems has a solution. Yes, you can get paying clients, and yes, you can hit your first $5K month — without giving away free sessions forever.

Michelle (00:01):
The hardest part of building and starting your life
coaching business is notcoaching, it is actually getting
paying clients.
And if you ever thought why isit so hard for me, then it looks
like for everybody else.
I promise you you are not doinganything wrong.
You just haven't developed theskills of how to get your

(00:24):
message out there in front ofthe right audience.
Today I am going to walk youthrough the three sneaky reasons
why most coaches, andespecially live coaches, why
you're struggling to sign andgetting paying clients and, most
importantly, how do you goabout fixing them?
Because once you see theseproblems and you might be

(00:46):
already struggling with them.
So once you see them, once youknow how to solve them, I
promise you things are going tostart to change.
Hey coach, welcome.
To Make it Visible podcast.
I'm Michelle Kuei, yourvisibility marketing coach, and

(01:06):
I help female life coaches toget seen in all the right places
, attract happy, paying clientsand build a coaching business
that actually feels good to run.
Even if you are still trying tofigure things out, each week
I'm giving you visibility tips, simple marketing strategies and
showing you how to create thekind of content that connects

(01:27):
with your audience so that youcan stand out, build your
authority and attract clients.
Who's already feeling like ayes before they jump onto your
discovery call?
So grab a notebook, pouryourself a favorite drink and
let's make your coachingbusiness visible, all right.
So mistakes?

(01:47):
And reason number one is you'recalling yourself a life coach.
Now, before you throw a tomatoat me, just hear me out.
Some of you might be out thereand you're doing really creative
thinking.
You're popping into ChatGPT andyou're thinking I don't want to
call myself a white coach, sowhat else can I call myself?
And, honestly, your client isnot paying you because of your

(02:10):
title.
They're actually paying you forthe result that they can get
from you.
So, honestly, when you look atyour own signing up to a
coaching program behavior, oryou really look at how all these
clients are signing up in thecoaching industry, a lot of us
don't even bother to look atwhat title you call yourself.
So why does the title matter?

(02:30):
It only matters to you and notso much to your clients that
you're working with.
You can call yourself a lifecoach, mindset coach,
motivational coach orempowerment coach, as long as
you can deliver the results thatyou're promising me right when
I first signed up with you whenyou look at all the life coaches

(02:51):
out there and why they'restruggling with the title life
coach is because life in itselfis pretty broad, right, it's
like you're saying you'retelling people that you are a
personal life coach Cool, butwhat does that mean?
Do you help me bake mysourdough bread?
Do you help me to train for abody competition?

(03:11):
What is it so, when you tellpeople that you are a life coach
, what they're actually hearingis that you're helping people
with everything.
So how do you fix that?
And, unfortunately, what thatalso means is that it also
indicates that you'll probablyhelp me with everything and
therefore anybody can jump intoyour discovery call.

(03:33):
And some of them let's face it,they're not your best client,
right?
They might be financiallystruggling with something, or
they just won't be able to payyou for the price point that
you're asking.
And, let's face it, there'sable to pay you for the price
point that you're asking.
And, let's face it, there'snothing wrong with asking for
the price and wanting that 5Kmonth or whatever that your

(03:54):
financial goal is for yourbusiness, because you're running
a business, you're not runninga charity, and so, first of all,
you don't want to have theseclients who's jumping onto your
discovery call and taking up atime slot when that time slot
can be so beneficial to someonewho actually need it?
So that's the problem withcalling yourself a life coach is

(04:17):
that it's telling people that, hey, you help with everything
and I totally get it right.
Narrowing it down, it feelslike a mission impossible.
If you look at you live yourlife as a whole.
We don't live our life in alittle tiny compartment that
we'll live chart that you areusing with your client.
The ultimate solution to thatis that you can call yourself

(04:39):
life coach, but you need to beable to articulate is there a
specific problem or solutionthat you're helping your client
to resolve?
Because essentially, yourclients are buying the solution
to a specific problem thatthey're having.
So let's say, I'm stressing outabout my career and in that
sense, when I come to you, Idon't want someone who just say,

(05:00):
oh, I'm a life coach, I helpwith life.
I want someone who can say Ihelp women in the HR world stop
dreading Mondays and landing thejob that they actually like.
That's a little more specificand that tells me that you're
probably some kind of careercoach, right?
Or someone who's helping megoing through life transition

(05:24):
and I'll get to.
I need to create anotherepisode about the term life
transition, because a lot ofcoaches out there don't like the
word life transition.
But essentially it's about lifechanging.
But essentially you're helpingpeople moving through life and
navigating through life andyou're a transition coach.
But specific make people leanin vague will just keep people

(05:44):
scrolling by, so you can callyourself a life coach.
However, your statement betterhave something a little more
specific in terms of I'm notjust helping you with any area
of your life, I'm helping youwith this specific area of life.
So what is that specific areaof the life that you're helping
people with?
And, honestly, this is alsowhere the niche drama comes in

(06:08):
right, because you end upspending months, if not years,
trying to find a space that youfeel aligned and that you would
like to pay.
Put you a flag on that mountainand say this is it, this is who
I am, this is who I want tohelp, and you might find
yourself coming up with a titleor a clever title, and I have
seen clients who come to me andthey came up with these clever

(06:31):
title that it's very, veryinteresting and I can totally
see them.
However, when you are gettingout there into the world I
almost want to bet my hundreddollar bill on that you're
sending people off the wrongmessage.
So when you come up with yourtitle, please do not be too

(06:53):
clever, do not be too creative, because you're sending out the
title out there and nobody elsebut besides, you can understand
that and that is a no.
So you definitely want to becareful trying to be creative
with your title.
If you are stuck, just simplycall yourself a life coach.
I promise you people arewilling to pay for what you are

(07:14):
offering if you're able toarticulate that value, all right
.
So that was reason number onewhy most life coaches are
struggling to get paying clients.
We're so hung up with the titleitself and just coming up with
the title and knowing who I help, which area of life, that wheel
of life I want to put myself in, that would take coaches months

(07:36):
, if not years, trying to figurethat out.
Reason number two why mostcoaches are struggling with
getting paying clients is thatwe all fall into that comparison
trap.
Now, let's face it, let's callit for what it is.
No matter how much inner workthat you have done, we still
fall into that trap of when yousee your fellow coach who's able

(07:58):
to get better clients.
They're getting paid for theircoaching business because
they're in the niche wherethey're either helping people
making more money or they gotsomething quote-unquote special
that allow them to differentiatethemselves from you.
So you start finding yourselfwondering if you should do the
same, even if you don't have awhole lot of experience in the

(08:21):
corporate world.
You're thinking maybe I shouldgo into the corporate world, or
maybe my niche, my targetaudience, a professional woman,
the white collar because thoseare the people who can afford me
, right?
That is a sign of comparisontrap, because then you're
thinking that in order to makemoney in my coaching business, I
need to be in a space wherepeople can afford me.

(08:44):
But you're not realizing thatis not the problem.
The problem is your message isnot articulating the value to
those who actually need yourhelp and who are actually
willing to pay for whatever thatyou have to offer if you're
able to tell them exactly whatyou do.
So don't feel like you need tobe someone who you are, not just

(09:10):
so that you can get people whocan afford you and a lot of time
.
This is also, one of the hugemistakes I see a lot of life
coaches are making is you'remaking an assumption that
somebody else is not able toafford you and therefore you put
yourself inside this other boxwhere you're limited to the

(09:30):
audience that you're trying toreach.
And this is why you're makingit so hard for yourself, because
you're assuming you're makingthat assumption.
All right if that's who you are.
The comparison trap it's real,it's out there and there's that
limiting belief where, oh,people will either pay money in
order to make money or peoplewill just Google their way out

(09:53):
of their own problem andtherefore they're not willing to
pay me.
So if you're out there callingyourself a life coach, it might
feel maybe I need to call myselfa leadership coach, executive
coach or business coach, forwhatever reason, trying to help
people making that six figure.
Otherwise I'm going to bestruggling and therefore I am
not going to get any payingclient.

(10:14):
If you ever think or thoughtabout that, who's going to pay
me four figure to fix their life?
Let me just say that I hearthis from almost every new life
coach I talk to and what I wantyou to hear is that no people

(10:34):
are willing to pay more you tofix their life.
But the way that they see it isthat they don't see it as help
me to fix my life.
They see it as helping me tofix or to resolve a specific
area of my life that has beenvery painful, that is urgent,

(10:55):
that I need to take care of, andthat is a reframe that you want
to make that's going to make adifference in your business.
Your life needs to be like thiseasy, something that you're
excited to wake up to, and so ifyour passion is in life
coaching, then let it be lifecoaching.
You don't have to put yourselfinto this mold where you see

(11:15):
other people are doing this andtherefore you feel like, in
order to be successful in yourcoaching business, I need to
also do this.
Reason number three why a lot oflife coaches are struggling to
get paying client is becauseyour offering is a little fuzzy,
and a lot of life coaches whocome to me, they come to me with
a package, a little packagewhere they describe me either a

(11:38):
month or three months or sixmonths or even a year.
Now think about this If you'restruggling to get a client for
the three months, chances areyou're going to have a lot of
struggle to fill the client'sroster in your one year program,
and most of us don't start witha one year program because
that's a lot of commitment, ittakes a lot of time to develop

(12:00):
and whatever that you put in,you better have a way of
articulating why someone wantsto come in for a whole year with
you, right?
So if you're just starting new,I would advise you not to come
up with this one-year package.
It's dreamy, it's great, itlooks fantastic, but the reality
is you're not even quite surewhat is that transformation to

(12:23):
deliver for someone within that30 days or maybe within the
first three months.
So you don't want to create apackage that's going to either
undersell yourself for the oneyear package or you don't want
to undervalue your package forthat one year and thinking that
all the one year is going tocost someone $10,000.
When you have trouble fillingthat seat or filling your roster

(12:46):
client roster within that firstmonth.
So your coaching offer issomething that's really
important, that you need tothink about and you also need to
be able to articulate it.
Think about this.
So if I were to ask you like, what do you do?
And you might be saying, well,I kind of help people like
living life to the fullest, Iwould be lost.

(13:07):
I wouldn't know why I should besigning up with you and let
alone booking a call with you.
But if you are saying, if youcan articulate that I help women
who feel stuck in burnout, taking back their confidence,
rebuild their energy so thatthey feel like themselves again,
now we're getting somewhere.
Now it's a little better right, that's a little more clear, and

(13:31):
that would probably make memore curious.
If I'm someone who's stuck inthe burnout and I would like to
get some more energy, I wouldlike to have some more me time
throughout my busy week or busyschedule.
That would make me want to talkto you.
All right.
So we talked about the threebig reasons why most life
coaches are struggling to getpaying client.

(13:52):
So the good news is andhonestly, there's more right.
There's more mistakes that Isee coaches are making on a
daily basis, and these are thecoaches who come to me with
their problems and every singleone of those problems.
There's a solution for that.
And yes, building a coachingbusiness that pays you so that
you can hit your first 5K months, it's totally doable.

(14:15):
It does not take five years todo this.
It does not take you 10certification in years to do
this.
It does not take you 10certifications in order to
accomplish this, and itcertainly does not require you
to give away all your freesession forever.
It only takes for you to dothree things differently.

(14:35):
Number one is getting clearabout your message and being
able to package your skills, your coaching skills, your
certification, your genius, intoan actual coaching offer or
coaching package that get peopleto say, oh yeah, that's me, I
really need this and this is sohelpful.
This is exactly what I've beenlooking for.

(14:57):
You need to be able to do that, and you also need to be able to
articulate the message and youroffer to your audience, to
those who have never met you,who are coming across your
coaching business for the veryfirst time.
You need to be able toarticulate that and getting
people to nodding their headalong the way and saying, yeah,

(15:17):
this is totally makes sense.
This is exactly what I'mstruggling for, right.
This is what I need.
How do I sign up?
You need to be able to do thatnow, and that is exactly why I'm
hosting a free masterclass.
It's called your First 5KMonths how to Market, get

(15:37):
Clients and Build an OnlineCoaching Business, even If you
Are you are new.
Now, this master class is forsomeone who's new or newish if
you feel like you're 80% readyto launch your business, but
you're stuck in this guessinggame right, you're not quite
sure if this is going to land.
Or sometimes I see thishappening all the time in some

(16:00):
of the coaches who think thatthey have a niche.
They came up with a statement, they have brainstormed it with
chat, gpt, but when they'reputting their offer out there
and they're hearing crickets, ifyou've been trying to do this
on your own and you're trying tolike moving all the pieces,
putting all the pieces of thepuzzle together, and you're

(16:21):
hearing crickets, that is a sign, my friend.
That is a sign.
And this masterclass is goingto teach you exactly the three
mistakes that keep new coaches, newbie coaches, feeling stuck.
I'm going to give you a simplestrategies of how to articulate
and how to package your skills, your genius, so that people

(16:45):

And, lastly, I'm going to sharethe five questions and I'm
going to give you the answersthat every life coaches need to
have in order to have consistent, paying clients life coaches
