Yeah, welcome to the first episode of Making the Merged
time Machine.

I was thinking, you know, I was like, we're gonna
do a new theme song. I was thinking, like like back.

To the Future music singing. Yeah, all right, So I
was just let's probably end up getting an official theme
song for this show eventually. But because this episode is
the we're gonna be breaking down the first episode of
Survivor Cook Island.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Cook Island, For what reason did you feel the need
to start with the Jeff Probe's fat shame?

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Because Jeff Probes did an episode of Mad TV to
promote Cook Islands the Race War season, where he proceeded
to put out a bunch of songs, one of which
we'll get to in a moment is the most racist
thing I've ever heard.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
Okay, and I think we should go ahead and address this. Yes,
we're gonna talk about this a lot. You called it
the race war season. I don't know if I would
like to call it that. Every time we talked.

Speaker 4 (01:28):
About we call it occasionally. And I think it's also
important to bring up the fact that in Fast and Furious,
too okay, they're too fast, too fast, too furious. I
think it's too fast to Furious. Yeah, because so too fast,
too furious. You know, Vin Diesel's barely in that movie.

They go to a race. What's the race called? Race?
Is it really fun? So?

Speaker 4 (01:56):
I don't know how that's related to this season of Survivor,
but if it might, they can do it, we can
do it.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
It wouldn't surprise me. We didn't do this three white
guys talking about Survivor. Didn't you come up racially ambiguous?
Is what I prefer.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
I just think they did this to themselves, the folks
that Survivor did this to them.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
So it gets crazy and we're gonna talk about it.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
And the fans of our show did this to us,
and we gave them four options and they're like, we're
gonna make them talk about the split them up by
race season.

So and I'm bummed because I was three episodes end
of this season when the vote took place, and so
then I had to stop.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Brand go ahead and say your thoughts on do you
think it was a good idea to separate the tribes
by race? Yeah?

I did.

Great tv PD, What.

Do you think I also, I think it made for
a good It made for a compelling season. A lot
of great characters came out of this one.

No one in their heart of hearts hates this idea
for a television show.

Here's a season of Survivor. I loved it when I
first went to it. Every season, right.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
No, but the reason why I loved it the first
time I watched through this was because I was like,
usually we only get one to two Asian people or
black people.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Tops. I'm glad you brought that up because that was
Jeff Probe's argument. Okay, so why don't we go ahead
and I'm gonna I'm gonna give a little backstore out here.
We're gonna have a lot to talk about this episode
before we even start into the episode, because it's bat
insane everything that happens before this. Okay, we might spend
more time on this than that episode. Yeah. So basically,

this season was announced at the live finale of the
previous season, like always, Immediately it started causing backlash online.
There were rumors that sponsors were pulling out, like it
was a big deal. It was a hot topic. What
year was this. It was season seventeen, so season so
this would have been I think, oh six.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Okay, this is the first one I remember watching on TV.
You watched it love, yes, yeah, two thousand and six,
so this is my third time watching this season.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
So immediately controversy. Right before the season airs, Jeff Probes
does a press run to try to defend the show
and to you know, convince people to still watch.

Speaker 4 (04:18):
And he still wouldn't come on our podcast. It's unbelievable.
I was seven years old when this happened. Hey, Jeff,
you think it's a good idea.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
So this is this clip that brand's about to play.
It's a little it's about a minute and a half long.
This is Jeff defending the season. Why they did it
to the view? Oh, go ahead and go ahead hit it, Brandon.

Speaker 5 (04:39):
Okay, we were getting bored, We were we were running
out of ideas that were really fresh. One of the
ideas that came up is what are we criticized for?
We're criticized all the time for the show not being
representative of America being too white.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
That's true. So then put blacks and whites on the
same team, just bring.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
More diversity, and why do they have to be separated, Like, well,
that's one American.

Speaker 5 (04:59):
That was original idea was let's just have a very
ethnically diverse cast, in Mark Burnett's words, the biggest in
the history of TV. It was when we started bringing
people in and started talking that we realized as as
as a group, Hispanic culture, there's a lot of pride,
there's a lot of ethnic prize. The Olympics.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Yes, didn't you.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
Lose a lot of advertisers because of this concept?

Speaker 2 (05:21):
You know what?

Speaker 5 (05:21):
That is absolutely, to the best of my knowledge, been misinformation.
I was told GM, for instance, pulled out months before
we even came up with the creative decision to do this,
and we've got a full slatest sponsors. I don't know why.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
I think it's a great idea. I don't know why,
but I think it would be interesting. You know, it
would be a bad idea. It would be to assume
that every single person in those groups is essentially a racist, right, Well,
it doesn't mean that they are. It's just that, you know,
we fought all.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
Of these years for integration and now we have segregation
on television.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
I just don't think it's right.

Speaker 5 (05:53):
Well, here's what I get that. I get that the
initial reaction when you hear it. I understand the flinch
and like, well, I don't know if this is right
or not. That The feeling I have is he you
have to watch how we did it and what happens,
and b it's just like what you what what you
said about with Damon? You know, I'm uncomfortable watching that
and he said, that's why we're doing it, And you
guys have hot topics and it's uncomfortable to listen to

Rosie loved the show. She was still a fan of
Survivor at this point. I assume every.

Plan was So here's some more backstory of how this
even happened, right, what would who came up with this
idea to separate the tribes by race? Well, there was
an email sent in to a different Survivor podcast several
several years ago, claiming to be someone that was like
involved in production back then. Okay, and this is what
that email essentially said. I can't wait, wait, hold on,

do you know what podcast? It was? Survivor historians. Okay,
and we believe this to be true from everything I
looked like, backed checking wise, they seem to take it
as a serious.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
Historians are pretty uh yeah, trust it's not them that
I don't trust it because he's also he told me
Casey Anthony was going to be on Traders.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
And but Chase. There was rumors going around that Casey
Anthony was gonna be on Trader. That'd be incredible. No,
it wouldn't be guys as the only one here from Florida.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
No, you don't get to speak for all of Florida.
I think Casey Anthony would be good on TV. It
sounds like okay.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Uh so, Mark, this is what the email essentially said.
Mark Burnett originally wanted the race separation idea for The Apprentice,
which was Donald Trump's reality shut it down, but NBC
mixed the idea because they did not want to risk
one of their few hit shows going down because of
a controversial twist. So CBS said, I we'll do it,

(08:49):
because they were far less reliant on Survivor's ratings because
of all of the other hit shows that they had
at the time. Jeff Probes agreed to the idea because
it was This was during the part where Jeff was
getting sick of Survivor and he wanted to be done
with it right, so he thought it would be a
good way to go out with a bang.

Speaker 4 (09:07):
This is what four or five seasons before he becomes
like an EP and it starts getting.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
It's before I think it's Gabond, I could get bone
gabone when he threatens to quit and they make him
an executive producer and show runner stuff. So he basically
wanted this to ruin the show. Supposedly, this is all
allegedly right. CBS's main worry was that they were going
to get to the Merge without any of the minority

(09:32):
groups present, and so that you know, that wouldn't be possible. Well,
that was their fear. This are the producers the higher ups,
right or very at the very least very little, Yeah, right, Yeah,
they didn't want it to be because I mean, how many.
So there's twenty castaways the merge, so yeah, ten people

make the merge, so it starts with six on each tribe, right, right,
So if you have six white guys at merge, five
on each. Yeah, we don't not do math anyway. That
was their fear. But Jeff was more than happy to
let things play out, because you know, I think he
was kind of one the ship we go down. CBS
and production were freaking out after some stuff that happens

in the first few episodes of the show. It got
to the point where even Jeff started to get worried
that maybe maybe this wasn't gonna just in survive, it
might ruin his career. Uh So there were very there
were many high level meetings about bringing in more producers
to figure out how to fix the show as it's shooting.
Can't do that. They thought about just ending production halfway

through the season, cutting all the contestants to check for
a million dollars to sign an NDA, and just riding
it out and being like, we're done. I don't know
if I believe this. There were several different sources that
said that kind of stuff, but a million to each
of them. Just now this next part. I don't understand

what Jeff was thinking. Okay, I don't understand what Jeff
if he wanted the show to get canceled, he was
doing good. But yeah, this song comes up. I mean, dude,
I can't so if.

It's what I think it is, it is what I
brought to the uh probably the jeffisode. Yes, you recall
I brought each brought the most out of context Jeff
Probs quotes, and I brought a song that I is
related to this season.

Here's here's one thing I thought was interesting about it, Jeff,
make sure that the really racist lines are said by
the actress in this. It's nice that we had the equalizer.

It wasn't actually Queen Lava. It was a very very
very not nice depiction of Queen latinas was on Mad
the sketch ends with this Queen Latifa but not here
clapping him with her tits. Oh yeah, it's insane, Jeff.

This is bro an episode of Mad TV that's all
about promoting survivor Cook Islands Chase. You know, we want
CBS to like us. I don't care. They did this.
They did this, they did they I didn't do this, well,
Jeff did this the specific thing right? What shows this?

This proves the uh, I don't know how people they
contain multitudes because this same guy at some point decided
I won't say come on in guys anymore. Right right, right, right,
we contain multitudes. And clearly I think Jeff has uh.
I don't think Jeff would do this today, even if
it was like a thing that Mad TV was doing.

I think Jeff would be like, hey, maybe this isn't
He wouldn't do this today.

Not a great not a great bit, Grandpa, Jeff would
not do this.

I think that what the idea was, because Mad TV
did an entire episode in Cook Islands. I think the
idea was that they were going to try to be
in on the joke so that people be like, oh,
they know that it was a pretty crazy thing. To
do this. Like, so that's not even the craziest sketch
that comes out of that episode. There's a Matt TV sketch. Worst. Yeah,

I'm not gonna play the whole Mad TV sketches because
there were so many of them. They were very long.
But like I mean, you see Key and peel because
this is Matt TV's so keen peeler in these sketches
on the Black tribe, Bobby Lee, who is now extremely famous,
he was on the Asian tribe, and they're all perpetuating
stereotypes extremely Uh. Here, this is a sound drop from
the beginning of the episode where they're talking about survivor

Cook Islands. This is a comedian pretending to be Jeff
Probes hit it Brandon Boy, African Americans, Asian American, Mexican American,
and real American. It's just stuff like that constyle. Who
was the comedian? Dude, I didn't know that guy, but
he kind of looked like Jeff.

You know what, let's react to that whole episode and
put it up behind a paywall and call it like
watch us die inside.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
Yeah, dude, it's it's insane. So yeah, that's kind of
everything that I have when it comes to the Okay,
we're time the pre preseason. I've got some fun facts
that are less give me crazy, Yeah, give me that question.
So seventeen out of the twenty contestants were recruited for

this season, meaning they did not audition.

Something that apparently was a lot more, A lot more.

In the early days of Surat they don't do it anymore,
but apparently a lot of players early on were recruited, Yes,
through like casting calls and like even through like I
think season thirty they were recruiting.

It makes sense only Jenny, Stephanie and Cowboy auditioned for
the show. And here's a quote from Jeff about that situation.
Once we decided that we are going to have the
most ethnically diverse cast in the history of TV as
far as I know, it required us to go out
and find these people because we don't have many minorities
that applied to the show. I don't believe that. I

don't believe either. So we did go So this is
this is the part of May we left. So we
did go to church groups and went to cultural centers.
It was literally the biggest casting endeavor we've done in
thirteen seasons. We go into the Hispanic community and we
start finding people who think, Wow, Survivor sounds like a
very cool idea. You mean, I live on my own,
I get to build shelter and fish, and I could
win a million dollars the result of all that hard work.

(16:32):
This is the most fresh, diverse, interesting group of people
with completely varied backgrounds that I think we have had
since season one.

Speaker 3 (16:39):
What does Jeff going into the Hispanic community entail.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
I don't know. It kind of sounds like they just
went to churches in predominantly like Hispanic areas areas and
we're like, hey, anybody want to be on the show.

Speaker 4 (16:52):
He's saying, I can't believe. He said, we just don't
have many minorities applying. I don't believe that, because at
this point Survivor.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
Was a huge It was the biggest. It was like
on television.

You're telling me the cultural phenomenon that was Survivor in
the early two thousands was only whites people watching.

It is no way, no way. Yeah, I agree with you.

start getting into the episode.

Yeah, I mean, we could start with how much cooler
the intro is than it is you know the era.

I mean, guys, I talked about it when we were
talking about like what we're hoping to see in sixty fifty,
and it is this type of intro, Like I don't
know how you watch Survivor and look at one season
where it's this mad dash off a boat.

the front, what's your name?

And be like the beach introductions way like it's not
better TV.

It's just not And for like, I don't I don't.

Know the reasoning behind moving away from this type of
opening to a season, but whatever it is, Jeff is
lying to himself if he says that it's better TV,
it's just fundamentally not.

Better to And I don't even well, so I do
know that the reason they do they don't give the
cast anything up front anymore, Like in this one they
got handed chickens and tools.

Oh yeah, but it's twenty six days versus thirty nine, right,
so they don't do that anymore.

So maybe the thought was, like it feels redundant to
just throw them off a boat and make them swim
to shore. But I would rather to watch.

I like it better than they all just show up
and then like stand before Jeff they're God and praise him.

Because it's not even like it's not even every season
starts off with hey, here's some supplies, grab and get them.
Some of them is just hey, here's a map. That's
good luck getting to your thing, or they could even
do that be the first challenge. Yeah, it is a
race to the shore, That's what I'm saying, Like, that's
the type of thing we need to start season fifty with.
It feels like Originals, but you have like all these

different players from different seasons, half of which new Era.
But and it's like but it still at least gives like, hey,
we're celebrated, like and we all know we're still gonna
have some of those challenges that we've become familiar.

With and new Era and that's fine, but to like
at least incorporate the way that they can start the.

Chaos allows for something like Jonathan Penner to steal Yule's chicken.

But it's a great great intro, great opening, and like
there's something so fun about the chaos going on around.

worth the the mad TV when he's talking about the
four tribes, yeah, I literally did write down that.

Jeff paused before saying African Americans.

There's a lot of African guess there's a lot like
that this episode.

But there were a couple of good quotes while they
were like on their way to their islands. So Ozzie,
he said, my first thought when I saw the tribes
were split right along racial lines, I said, God, this
is going to be hard. And then we had poverty
saying different ethnic groups. Is that kosher? I don't know,
but it's a cool social experiment.

I think when they were doing that little segment where
they were they essentially took one person from each tribe
and was like, what do you think about this season?
You could tell that Yule did not with this idea. Yeah,
he like he said that he was afraid it was
going to perpetuate stereotypes or characters of the different races. Brother.
He did not look happy. But and then we got

Cowboy doing the stereo right meet Cowboy Bud. And then
Jenny also was not like the whole uh. I can't
remember the name of the tribe, but the Asian trupe.
They did not enjoy the fact because they just found
out on the boat. But it didn't seem like super
upset about it. I think that they were trying to

be cool, but it seemed like they were not happy
about it, which I don't think I would have been
happy about it. Cowboys pumped.

Cowboys, Cowboys doing great. Get to teach these kids stuff,
It's gonna be great. Cowboys hilarious.

And I also love.

Ozzy gets on the island and within five minutes finds
a tree to close. It's like, let me show showcase
my skills. Right here, right now is my favorite survivor
player of Bolt. I hear a lot of hype about
and this is my early hot take. I hear a
lot of hype about Ozzie currently I don't get it. Yeah,
and like I, I have seen two more episodes from

this season and I don't get it yet. But I'm
ready to be blown away by all that Aussie is.

Remember he does several seasons, so it doesn't necessarily even
mean that this.

When I felt the same way about Boston Robb the
first season Boston Robbers, and I was like, I don't
understand why everybody's freaking out about Boston Robb.

But then all stars just like oh, and then you're like, oh,
this guy's he's the greatest guy. Yeah. Did you not
see him climb the tree? I saw him, yes, of course,
very impressively. That you were hook line Sinker who was
kicking the coconuts with his feet holding onto the branches,
with his Billy's fumbling around. You know, he's like, I'm
gonna make a toilet. I climbed trees. You know what

was Billy.

He's like the first thing Billy said is I'm gonna
make a toilet.

Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna It was like all right, guys,
when you start making a shelter, I don't know how
to make a toilet. Yeah, everybody's looking like what He's like,
I'll show you how to do it later, But you know, Billy,
I I that was Billy's first mistake is going on
the island and the first acting like.

He knows how to do things, but then clearly not
knowing how to do things. It's like the opposite approach
of people who are natural leaders, but they're like, I'm
not gonna lead because I don't want to be a target.
Billy's like, I know I can't do this, but I'm
going to tell them that I can and hope.

That they keep me around for for a while. Would
you guys like to know some behind the scenes stuff
about Billy Garcia. I know that I'm gonna I hope
to get him on the show. Yeah. I want to

funny when he talks about stealing the chicken. He's very

was was it? Flicka? Dudey? What was so amazing? Right?
He steals a chicken? We put chickens under box. It
is they reproduced quickly because they got two chickens. I

And for some reton I still don't know why Flicka
goes over and just lives from the box to take

And this since it's like lots of different cultures still
in one and they just said are the same, right, Yeah,
and then like come to find out episode one.

No Team Latino. Sure, yeah, it's very true. But Cowboy,
I think makes a makes a stark difference.

I think they're the most interesting tribe right now because
of that. Like you have, like I always love when
you have like this older player on Survivor that kind

school guy with these four younger people and he's like,
I've gotta I gotta teach you a thing or two,

probably like, well, they get along so well because they're
all the same race. But it's like, no, you all

every single person that was cast on this sea is
from California. Yeah, so they're all literally from the same place,
and they're all around the same aide. That makes the
whole thing seems like a facade. Yeah, I mean, obviously

Cowboy is not from California. He's from by Vietnam and

All of the people that they recruited, turns out they
just went to one town. Yeah, it's just a different neighborhoods,

them from the same place and they're all the same age.

he is so charismatic as you think you'd be on

feel like PD has been the most safe this whole episode,
and then throws that one out. He's so charismatic it's
insane that he doesn't come back again for another season. Yeah,

wild is none of the African American castaways from the
season ever returned, shocking deviment the Survivor the only returning
players which we get a lot of legends in this season.
Three White tribe members and then Ozzy. They return a bunch,

who have seen more seasons of Survivor than I have,

it doesn't exist in the later seasons, like it's like

That there was a big scandal that happens in season
thirty nine. Okay, I believe where and I haven't seen
the season yet, but i've heard about it. Someone I
believe got ejected for like sexual harassment.

what season was that with the Yeah, yeah, but that
was that was when anything but that was no one cares.

Yeah, but this is consensual, So I mean there's no

in depth on the challenge. Basically, it's an I did.
It's a community and reward challenge. You get like some
fishing gear and stuff and some flint if you come
in second. What's interesting is there's four tribes. Four doesn't
happen often.

Seeing that many people. It's pretty crazy like that, and
not have to get covered in mud.

Yeah, it was also interesting that how are they gonna
get birthed into the season of.

Speaker 2 (38:44):
A different way? Fire and I actually have a really
interesting fact about that. That's my whole thing this season.

I got fund that's Chase.

Chase took a masterclass on something and he's like, I'm
a fun fact. It's just he's a survivor for historian, right, Yeah,
I nerd out on the history. Well, I guess I

tribe has to put together their boat. Wait. Google doesn't

what's the definition of patients one moment? Okay, So each

tribe has to put together a boat. It's like a
puzzle and it turns into a boat. Then you have
to use that boat to row out to a barrel
containing fire. They will have to light their torch and
row back to shore. Here's where the fun fact is.
Apparently in an interview that Billy Garcia did way back
into Chad, Billy Garcia was accidentally caught on fire during

(40:32):
that challenge and they didn't show it, and they didn't
show it, and this is what he says, I'll tell
you the whole story. What During the first immunity challenge,
Christina went to step on a platform in the water
that had a barrel of kerosene on it to light
a torch and later in the challenge, Oh, the platform
dipped and some of the kerosene spilled on my backside.

(40:54):
Later in the challenge, after the torch was lit, we
had to assemble a ladder and climb up to light
a cauldron signifying we won shut out. Well, a part
of my ladder disassembled and that halted my ascent. Christina
didn't notice and kept climbing. She ended up lighting my
kerosene drenched shorts on. Why did he just take them off?

(41:16):
And he goes Jeff Probes yells, Billy's on fire. He's
engulfed in flames. The challenger was a concern. Then Billy says,
I didn't even scream. My reaction was that figures what dude, Wait?
But I think my reaction would have been, I'm surrounded
by water. This is convenience. He's gonna jump in the water.

(41:38):
I don't know. He doesn't say, because all he says
maybe that reaction didn't make good television. Maybe they were
worried about legal issues that would have made amazing television,
or maybe that didn't fit the narrative of the story
they were telling. I don't know why it wasn't shown.
But if you compare my shorts in the first episode
and the second episode, you will see that I'm wearing
different black shorts. I'm gonna be on the lookout for

(41:59):
that Billy. That's crazy that he got caught on fire. Oh,
they have to put together their boat puzzle. They row
out to the barrel containing fire, they have to light
their torch. You know, all the stuff that we talked
about with Billy getting lit on fire. The African American
tribe is so far behind the White tribe also struggling.
Their boat comes apart in the middle of the ocean
because they like they realize that they're behind, and they

kind of take off before and fully assembled. Dude, did
you guys notice that this happened several times in this
challenge and I'd forgotten about this. Nowadays you can't even
proceed until everything's locked right down, Jeff. Now is like,
you're good. Go used to like that boat puzzle was
not done. They just hit the water with it. And
then later when they're building the ladder to climb up,

(42:42):
all of the pieces are not on. When one of
the girls gets to the top. I thought that was
very interesting. Fast and loose over there earlier. Yees, come on, guys,
this is the wild Wild West. Green Tribe gets their first,
and then Red Tribe and this is officially Ozzie's first
win in a career of over fourty challenge wins. Yeah,
so those two were in the clear.

Speaker 4 (43:03):
Then Blue Tribe team wins. That's fair that I understand that. Yeah,
only individual, I said it. I don't count it all right,
I said it. Then the Blue Tribe, I thought before I.

Speaker 2 (43:17):
Said, no, do you think do you think Ozzie played
a part in them winning? No, you don't crazy. He
is great. He's a challenge beast. Okay, but that means
that the Yellow Tribe is going to tribal So the
producer is probably furious that the African American tribe is
the first one is getting eliminated from the tribal camps.

(43:38):
If the story you told us, that story is true, true? Yeah, yeah,
so I thought that was very interesting. At the end
of the challenge, the losing tribe gets to send someone
from one of the other tribes to Exile Island, bringing
it back from Jason Prior. So they send Jonathan Pinner
as punishment for stealing the chicken. Yeah, which fair, totally fair, and.

Yeah, I have it.

Penner said, I think it was because I took the
Asian guy's chicken that the African American guys chose me.
I was shocked and I couldn't believe it.

because it feels like I'll go further with them than
