Don Ross (00:01):

(00:22):
heaven when you die.
Now that's good, but that's notactually the story that the
Bible is telling.
You might find that the storythat scripture is all about is
far more compelling.
And as a man, it's a story thatyou're going to want to be a
part of.
Let's talk about that today onthe manhood tribe show.

That's manhoodtribes.com/manly.
All right, guys.
Welcome back to the manhoodtribe show.
My name is Don.
It is really good to be with youagain today.
We are actually starting into abrand new series.
(01:45):
And this series is really allabout faith.
Now, as I say that, I want to bereally careful that that's what
I'm saying, because probably fora number of you guys, that's an
immediate turnoff.
But what I want to say here isthat on the manhood tribe show,
what I try to do is I want toreally try to solve some big
problems for you guys.
I want to address the thingsthat men are asking about life,
(02:09):
about themselves, about theworld around them, and really
kind of trying to figure out, even if it's not like the
highest priority in your life.
It's probably a big question,mark, that you've got rolling
around in your head somewhere.
And so when I say that thisseries is going to be about
faith, I want it to be aboutfaith in the way that you maybe
haven't thought about so much.
I want to be, uh, I want it tobe about faith for you guys in
(02:32):
particular, who you would maybesay this whole faith thing.
I'm just not sure if it worksfor me.
Like, I don't know if I'm cutout to kind of be the church
going guy to be the.
To be the nice guy who shows upand follows all the rules and
yeah, like I want to be therefor my wife and for my kids.
And I certainly want my kids togrow up making good choices, but
(02:52):
like when push comes to shove, like I show up to church and.
I'm just bored.
Like, I don't feel like itreally has anything to say to
me, or I've been around themessage that other Christians
are preaching and it just makesme feel uncomfortable or weird,
or man, they're so nice that Ijust, I'm not really sure that I
fit with that group.
You might even just kind of feellike, you know, as a man, like I
(03:15):
just don't see a lot of othermen around these kind of church
and faith circles.
Like, I don't know that like thekind of man that I am really
belongs there or fits in withwhat's going on.
And that kind of churchenvironment.
And I just want to say to you, like I get it.
I understand.
I think as someone who has beenaround church my whole life and
(03:35):
has even worked as a pastor fora number of years.
I really understand.
Church.
Isn't always the most welcomingplace for men.
It's not really designed for theway that we think the way that
we function, the way that werelate to each other, or even
for the things that excite usand that we tend to get
passionate about.
The way that church is reallywired today is that it's
(03:57):
predominantly geared towardswomen.
And so because of that, it's nosurprise that we, men might have
a hard time fitting in thatenvironment.
But that doesn't mean that thebig idea of what church, of what
faith of what God is reallysupposed to be about.
Doesn't include us as men.
(04:17):
In fact, what I want to try todo in this series is talk about
the ways in which I think we menare actually meant to play a
pivotal and central role in thiswhole idea of faith and church
and what all of that is meant tolook like in our world.
So.
I wanted to say, give this ashot.
Maybe you've been around faithand church for a while, and
(04:38):
you're kind of like bored ordone, or you don't really know,
like if you buy into it fully ornot.
And I want to say this is foryou, so let's kind of explore it
together.
What I want to try to do is say, what would it look like to
develop a masculine faith andGod.
What would a masculine faith andguide even looked like?
Is that a word that we shouldeven apply to faith?
(05:01):
What would it look like to havea manly faith?
So that the way that I live out,my spiritual life feels like
it's a part of what it means tobe a man, not just kind of this,
like.
Softer sort of a feminine sideto me where I do nice things
and, you know, make all theright choices.
Like I there's far more to itthan that, but what would it
(05:22):
mean for us as men to reallyhave a masculine faith?
I think there's three thingsthat I want to try to cover in
this series.
And we're going to look at themfrom a whole bunch of different
angles.
But I think for us as men tohave a faith that really
resonates with who we are asmen, there's three things that
are needed.
One, it needs to be epic.
(05:44):
And when I say epic, I mean, itneeds to be a big story.
It needs to be something thatfeels like it involves all of
our life.
And it is sweeping us up into agrand mission and a grand story.
When guys think about the moviesthat they love, they are epic
stories.
When you think about things likegladiator or the Lord of the
(06:05):
rings stories or the whole likeMarvel franchise, right?
All of it is epic.
It's telling these big grandstories and there are key parts.
For heroes to play.
Men want to be able tocontribute to an epic story.
And so we need our faith to bebuilt on an epic story.
(06:26):
We also need our faith to bepurposeful.
Men are built for action.
And so when we think about whata masculine faith looks like, it
should have purpose behind it.
We, men should have a role toplay.
We should have a part tocontribute.
We need to have a purpose in thefaith story that we are living
out.
If we don't, then we're justkind of like sitting around on
(06:48):
the sidelines, sort of twiddlingour thumbs and that doesn't feel
masculine at all.
So if faith is going to besomething that.
It relates to us as men.
We need to understand it asbeing purposeful.
We need to have a purpose.
We need to have a role to play.
And then third.
It also needs to be resilient.
(07:08):
And what I mean by that is notthat just that you need to be
resilient, you know, that we, asmen need to be resilient,
although that's true as well, but our faith needs to be
resilient.
And that means that in the midstof the really hard things in
life, When our faith getschallenged by the toughest, most
difficult, most painful thingsin our life's journeys.
(07:29):
That it can hold up.
It can actually take somepunches.
It can get knocked down and getback up again.
Our faith needs to be resilient.
It needs to be able to encounterall that life can throw at it.
And still holds strong.
So we want to try to figure outwhat does it look like then to
take the faith that we've beenexposed to and figure out how
(07:52):
can we live it out in a waythat's masculine.
That's epic.
That's purposeful.
That's resilient.
So we want to try to do all ofthose things in this series.
But the way that we're going todo it is look at what I'm going
to say are basically six bigcategories that are going to
help us kind of re-examineespecially the Christian faith.
As most of us have beenpresented it in American modern
(08:15):
culture.
Okay.
So as we think about theChristian faith, there's kind of
six big areas I want to cover inthis series.
And the first area is just thestory of our faith, the story of
our faith.
Most of us in America or in, inthe west in general, have been
presented with a version of thatstory as simply something that
(08:36):
goes like this.
God created the world.
There was some kind of fall sinlike Adam and Eve.
They made some bad choices.
And so because of that, Jesushad to come and rescue all of
humanity.
He died on a cross to forgiveour sins.
And if we'll put our trust inhim, we can go to heaven when we
die.
And that's kind of the wholestory that we've been presented
(08:56):
with.
And there's some nice thingsabout that.
And there's some really goodthings about that, but it's not
epic.
It's not really a big story.
I mean, I just told it in likeless than 10 seconds.
It's not purposeful.
All that we have to do is justtrust Jesus.
And then like, what is thereleft to do?
We just sort of sit around andwait until we die and go to
heaven.
And what do we do in heaven?
(09:17):
Like what, what, where is thepurpose for us in that there
there's no role for men to playin that story?
And it's also not resilient.
Many of you who are watchinghave probably come up against
some really hard places in yourlife and found that like, yeah,
great, Jesus forgives me on mysins, but what's he going to do
about all this hard crap thatI'm facing?
(09:38):
That story doesn't hold up verywell.
It doesn't give you something toanchor onto to be able to say,
yeah, I can weather these stormsbecause of my faith.
So we need to do a little betterthan that.
And today I want to try to tellyou the story of your faith.
If you're a Christian.
Or the story of God and humanityfrom the Christian perspective,
(10:01):
for those of you who aren't, sothat you might be able to give
another look at what it means tofollow the God of the Christian
scriptures.
What does it mean to understandthat whole story and to be able
to find yourself in it?
Okay.
Now, I could spend hours tryingto tell that story.
And clearly we don't have thatkind of time here on the
(10:21):
podcast.
So this is going to be a reallycondensed version of that story,
but I want to try to present itto you in a way that you maybe
haven't really heard told to youbefore.
So let's jump into that.
The story of God and humanitybegins as it goes in the
beginning.
God created the heavens and theearth.
(10:42):
But before God created theheavens and the earth, there was
this whole realm.
That was filled with otherbeings.
God didn't create humans first.
He created the spiritual racistfirst.
Sometimes we call them angels, but the Bible actually has lots
of words for spiritual beings.
The kind of generic term forthat is Elohim.
(11:05):
These are just spiritual beingswho existed in God's spiritual
realm and worked with him in allmanner of ways.
They were involved in helpingGod with the creation of the
physical realm, which is theworld that we inhabit.
Sometimes the scriptures callthat the earth or just the land.
We are a part of that realm, butthere was a whole realm that
(11:29):
came before us.
And when God created this realm,he made us as humans in
particular to kind of be thegovernors or the rulers of this
realm.
He said that we were made in hisimage, which means that we were
meant to be what the Bible callsan idol or an icon.
(11:50):
We were meant to represent Godin this realm and to extend his
will and his way of doingthings.
Into this realm.
And so you hear right off thebat.
We have a big part to play.
We have a purpose in this realm.
God has meant all along formankind to rule over the
(12:12):
physical realm and to bring intoit, the order of the way that
God does things.
He wants this realm to exist theway that he would have it done,
but he doesn't just make thathappen by, you know, waving a
magic wand at it.
He does that by putting hisimage.
Into this realm and saying, goand make that happen.
(12:33):
That is our job.
Our job is to rule and to governthis realm the way that God
would want it ruled andgoverned.
We have a big part to play.
But not long after we werecreated, some things kind of go
sideways.
One or maybe even many of thosespiritual beings began to have
(12:55):
different thoughts about howthings should be ruled and
governed.
In the spiritual realm, as wellas in the physical realm where
we were governing.
The story is that.
Uh, being who we call Satantempted our first humans into
thinking that God was holdingout on them and that he had
(13:16):
created them in a way that theywere missing out on some of the
things that the spiritual beingsgot to be a part of and that
they got to know.
And that if we would just do theone thing that God said not to
do, it would actually open oureyes and allow us to be like
these other spiritual beings.
And even like, God himself.
(13:37):
But in doing so.
It actually broke us.
So instead of giving us all ofthe insight and the knowledge
and the power that we hoped togain, it actually separated us
and our relationship with God.
We were still his image, but wewere now broken.
And that way we weren't able toactually fulfill the role that
(13:58):
he wanted us to do because wecouldn't function the way that
he wanted us to function.
We had been tempted.
And we fell for the trap.
And in doing so that physicalrealm became not just ours to
govern anymore, but these roguespiritual beings started to have
a say in how the realm gotgoverned.
(14:18):
And that was never their role toplay.
That was ours, but because ofour mistake and invited their
role in making things happendifferently here in the physical
realm.
Things went from bad to worse, really fast in the early years
and centuries of humanity.
God tried to correct things bycausing a flood and wiping out a
(14:41):
significant part of thepopulation.
That part of the population wasactually something that had gone
horribly wrong.
The scriptures tell us that someof those spiritual beings
actually came and made it withhuman beings.
And in producing offspring, theycreated a race of giants that
the scriptures call theNephilim.
(15:02):
These things were never meant toexist.
They were a mixing of thespiritual and the physical
realms that God never intendedto happen.
And so he caused a flood to helpwipe them out and say, we need
to start again with humansgoverning the way that they are
meant to, but even in startingagain, we didn't make the
choices that we were supposed tomake.
(15:22):
Things continued to get worseand worse and war and violence
and injustice and horribleimmorality began to take control
over the way that the world wasgoverned.
And eventually we came to aplace where we decided we would
build a tower and try to rise tothe heavens and actually bring
God down to us.
To say that we no longer neededto function the way that God had
(15:45):
intended us to function, butthat we could actually decide
what ruling this realm lookedlike for ourselves.
But God, the God of the Bible.
He's named Yahweh and scripturesand Yahweh, who was the Elohim
of Elohim, the single andhighest of all spiritual beings.
The one who had createdeverything said.
(16:07):
It's not going to go that way.
And he caused things to bedisrupted.
He changed our languages and heseparated us from one another.
And in doing that, he actuallyhanded all of humanity over to
these other rogue, spiritualbeings.
He just decided.
Hey, if you're going to livethis way, I'm not going to try
(16:30):
to stop you, but I am going tocontinue my plan of having
humanity, be the rulers and thegovernors of this world, and to
do it in the way that it shouldbe done.
According to Yahweh's kingdom.
But in order for that to happen,y'all way was going to have to
do something different.
And so he did, he handed overall of the nations or all of the
(16:51):
people groups to these roguespiritual beings, and so that
they began to worship otherfalse gods.
They treated these spiritualbeings as deities and became
subject to them.
But what God did was somethingtotally different.
He decided he would start.
A new nation, that would be hisown nation and would function
(17:13):
the way that he intendedhumanity to function all along.
So he called out one human beingfrom amongst all of these
corrupt nations.
And from that one man said, I amgoing to make a new nation.
Now that man's name was Abrahamor who we know as Abraham.
It was from Abraham that Goddecided he would create a new
(17:36):
nation.
Even giving to Abraham and hiswife, Sarah, a son in very old
age, who they named Isaac.
Isaac then had a son named Jacoband Jacob had 12 sons who became
the tribes of Israel.
Israel was God's chosen nation.
And it was from the people ofIsrael that God had decided he
(17:58):
would establish his rule and hiskingdom through them.
Israel was sent into an erawhere they were enslaved by the
nation of Egypt.
But God, and very powerful anddramatic fashion delivered his
people out of Egypt through thestory of Moses.
He raised up Moses to be adeliverer for his people and
(18:22):
rescued them out of slavery.
You know, many of the stories, probably about the 10 plagues
and the 10 commandments and allof that.
All of that was God's way ofrescuing his people, his new
nation, and saying you will bemy people and I will be your
God.
Yahweh gives his new people, aset of teachings that we
(18:43):
sometimes call the law, but thescripture is actually call the
Torah.
It just means teachingsliterally is what it means.
And he gave them these teachingsas a way of being able to say,
here is how you will live out.
What it looks like to be anation who is dedicated to me.
Now it's really important tounderstand that these laws
(19:04):
weren't about earning your ways.
Fafer.
The people of Israel already hadyou always favor, he was there
nation.
He had established a covenantwith Abraham.
And then again with Mosesthrough the giving of the Torah,
to be able to say you are mypeople and I am your God, and
(19:25):
that is not going to change.
So they were never not in God'sfavor.
But in keeping the teachings ofthe Torah, they were able to
demonstrate what God's kingdomlife was really meant to look
like.
And in doing that, theycontinued to receive his
blessings.
But at times when they tended tolive like other nations and to
(19:48):
try to do things in ways thatweren't consistent with God's
kingdom.
They received curses for thatbecause God wanted them to be a
people who would show the restof the world, what it looked
like to live in his kingdom.
They were meant to be a light tothe rest of the nations.
They were a special nation, butthey were meant to show every
(20:10):
nation what it looked like tolive in God's kingdom and to be
a part of Yahweh's life.
This is what we are always meantto do as God's image.
We are meant to show the worldwhat it looks like to live in
his kingdom.
And to follow him the way thathe has always intended.
(20:30):
Israel moved into a promisedland and tried in many places to
live out of God's laws andteachings, but they failed many,
many times at being able to dothat.
They failed so miserably, infact that God had to send people
to rescue them out of theirperiods of devastation and
destruction and rebellion.
(20:50):
And all the things that theywere causing to go wrong.
These people were called judges.
But after an era of the judges, the people of Israel had finally
just kind of said, we don't wantthis pattern to continue
anymore.
We in fact, want a king, we wanta king so that we can be like
all the other nations.
Now God said I have chosen to beyour king.
(21:12):
You aren't meant to be like allof the other nations.
But because this is what youwant.
I will give it to you.
And he did.
He established Israel as akingdom with a king.
And those Kings started out.
Okay.
In fact, the second king ofIsrael, David is probably one of
the most famous figures in allof history.
(21:35):
He ruled Israel well, and heshowed them what it looked like
to follow after the heart ofYahweh.
But David wasn't perfect.
He made some pretty big mistakeshimself.
And his son Solomon came torule, but Solomon adopted a lot
of the practices of foreignnations, including marrying
other foreign wives and bringingthe worship of their foreign
(21:57):
deities into the land of Israel.
And after Solomon, the kingdomof Israel actually split into,
into two kingdoms called Israeland Judah.
And over the course of theiryears, Israel and Judah spiraled
further and further downward andfurther, a further away from
following the teachings ofYahweh.
(22:18):
Both kingdoms were eventuallydestroyed.
Israel was completely destroyedby the kingdom of a Syria.
And then later on the kingdom ofJudah was destroyed by the
kingdom of Babylon, and actuallymany of those people from the
kingdom of Judah were sent intoexile in Babylon.
But before that happened.
The presence of God who haddwelt with his people from an
(22:42):
incredible building called thetemple.
Actually his presence left thetemple.
He abandoned his people.
And the sense of saying, I willno longer be physically present
with you.
Even though you are my people,my presence is not going to be
with you in this way anymore.
And the people were sent intoexile.
(23:03):
Although the prophets hadforetold that they would come
back.
And they did.
They returned to the land ofIsrael about seven years after
their eggs exile, just as theprophets had foretold.
But then for many years, thepresence of God was not
physically with his people inthe land of Israel.
(23:23):
It was many centuries later thata young Jewish boy was born in
the town of Bethlehem and hisname as many of you know, was
Jesus.
Jesus was born as ainsignificant little Jewish boy.
And an insignificant town toinsignificant parents.
(23:44):
But he wasn't just aninsignificant young man.
He was the son of God.
And he went on to live a lifethat demonstrated exactly what
it meant for mankind to live a.
Lifestyle that looks like thelife of God's kingdom as he had
always intended.
(24:04):
Jesus did things that no one hadseen before and that no one
understood.
He was famous for his miracles, for healing, the sick, and even
raising the dead.
But he was also known for hiskindness and his compassion for
the way that he served the poorand paid attention to people
that.
No one else in that culture paidattention to even the religious
leaders.
(24:25):
Jesus took the teachings of theTorah and helped them understand
what it meant to follow your wayand a whole new way of
understanding that.
But because he was suggestingnew kinds of things and because
he hadn't come up from thesignificant.
Teaching schools that many otherteachers had, he was looked at
kind of funny and he angered thereligious leaders in the
(24:46):
political leaders of the daysignificantly.
And because of that, they soughtto bring him down.
Even to the point.
Of killing him.
Jesus.
Uh, son of Israel, but also theson of God suffered a death for
the way that he had lived.
But for the controversy that hehad brought to the people of
Israel.
(25:07):
But in dying, he did somethingthat no one expected.
In his death.
He actually went to the realm ofthe dead, the place where all
dead humans had gone.
And rescued them out of theslavery of the enemy.
They no longer belonged to therogue spiritual beings who had
(25:28):
come to overthrow the world andto rule it as they wanted to
rule it.
But instead.
He said you have access to mykingdom now.
And then on the third day afterhis death, he actually rose from
the dead.
He conquered death.
He defeated sin and he overthrewthe rogue spiritual powers who
(25:49):
were enslaving humanity to theircauses.
And because of Jesus, somethingentirely new happened.
God's kingdom was now availableon the earth to all people.
It was no longer just somethingthat was true of Israel, but
anyone from any nation could nowbe called part of the people of
(26:13):
God, if they would put theirtrust and their allegiance into
Jesus as their king.
Jesus had risen from the dead.
And he spent several weeks amonghis followers, teaching them
what all of this had been aboutand how they were meant to carry
that message and that mission tothe whole world, that everyone
was meant to have theopportunity, to be able to give
(26:35):
their allegiance to king Jesusand to live a life in his
kingdom, understanding what itmeant to follow Yahweh.
As Yahweh had meant to do allalong.
His people were now a light tothe world so that everyone would
have an opportunity to be a partof his nation.
This was what he intended fromthe very beginning.
(26:55):
When he had said that we wouldbe the rulers of the earth.
But now he has gone about it ina way that no one expected.
He is rescuing us out of thekingdom of darkness, out of the
slavery of these rogue spiritualbeings and into the kingdom of
light, into the kingdom ofJesus, so that we might be able
(27:17):
to live the life that we werealways meant to live, to have
the purpose that we were alwaysmeant to have, and to be invited
into a much bigger story thanjust toil and slavery and death.
Jesus did all of that for us.
And all that is asked of us inorder to be able to experience
(27:37):
that is that we give ourallegiance to Jesus.
The scripture say that if weconfess with our mouth, that
Jesus is Lord and believe in ourhearts, that he is raised from
the dead.
Then we will be saved.
So, all that you have to do isconfess, confess that Jesus is
Lord.
Now that might sound like a verysimple thing, but confessing
(27:59):
that Jesus is Lord means thatyou're recognizing he is king.
Not only over the whole world, but over your life in
particular, it means that youare surrendering your life to
him.
Everything about you, everythingabout the way that you live
about the choices that you make, about the way that you relate to
others, about how you spend yourtime, about how you spend your
money, about what you eat, aboutwhat you wear, everything.
(28:23):
You are surrendering everythingto him.
He is Lord, and you areconfessing it.
If you are willing to do that.
And to believe in your heart, that God actually raised him
from the dead to have confidencethat he really is who he says he
is.
And that that actually happened.
He will save you.
He will rescue you out ofdarkness and into his kingdom of
(28:46):
light.
It is a free gift to anyone whowants it to anyone who is
willing to give their allegianceto Jesus.
And in doing that, we agree toparticipate in the mission of
his kingdom, which is to say,There are so many who are still
lost and enslaved to the kingdomof darkness.
(29:08):
And just as Jesus is aboutrescuing them, he wants us to be
doing the same.
Our purpose is to bring thekingdom of light to the earth.
You see, the thing about Jesus'skingdom is that it isn't
something that is far away anddistant.
When we think about dying andgoing to be with Jesus in
heaven.
That's not really the wholestory.
(29:29):
The whole story is that God'skingdom is coming to earth.
And while we might experiencedeath and separation from the
earth for a little while.
We are always meant to livehere.
In the end, we will beresurrected with new bodies and
we will live here on the earthand bring God's kingdom rule to
bear for all of eternity.
(29:50):
But in the meantime, we're meantto do it in what little ways
that we can in the ways that werelate to each other in the ways
that we show up and serve thosein our community who most needs
serving in the ways that weengage with politics in the
ways, in the ways that we engagewith business in the ways that
we handle our money and ourrelationships and our time and
(30:12):
everything.
Everything about what you do ismeant to display Jesus's kingdom
to others.
You have a purpose, you are hisimage you represent to the
world.
What living in his kingdom ismeant to be about.
This story is epic.
It is purposeful you have a roleto play and it is resilient.
(30:34):
It holds up to the biggest andthe grand a stories of all time.
Because it is the story ofYahweh.
Our guide.
And humanity who he has created.
It is the story that we are allmeant to be a part of.
And so I want to call you upinto that story.
I want to say to you men.
(30:54):
You have a role to play.
You have a purpose.
This is a giant story.
It is not just being about beinga good boy until you die so that
you can go.
You know, sing some songs inheaven for the rest of forever.
That's boring.
That's a story that nobody wantsto be a part of, but it's not
the story of the Bible.
(31:14):
The story of the Bible is somuch bigger and so much grander
and so much better than that.
And you have a part to play init.
You are, ya'll always image.
You are a part of Jesus'skingdom and you are meant to
bring that kingdom here on theearth.
In any way and an every way thatyou possibly can.
(31:35):
That is your role men.
That is a role that we asbrothers need to take up.
And that's what I'm challengingyou to do.
Pick up your sword.
In whatever way, that that ismeaningful to you, you have a
role to play.
And as a member of God'skingdom, you need to be
advancing what he is all about.
(31:56):
Now we're going to continue totalk more about what all of that
means and how you might live outthat role and understand what
your role looks like.
At the present time and in thisworld today.
But for now, what I want you toknow.
Is that.
It is possible to have amasculine faith.
It is possible to be a man wholoves God.
(32:18):
And enjoys doing that enjoysliving out his faith in the
world, because you are soconfident that you have a
purpose and you have a role inthe story that you're living in
is big and epic and grand, andyour faith can withstand the
hardest things that life canthrow at you.
It's all worth it.
(32:38):
And it's all far better than youprobably have been taught.
We're going to continue tounpack that, but for now, I just
want you to know.
Much more is possible than whatyou've been exposed to.
I hope you've caught a glimpseof how wonderful a masculine
faith can actually be.
And I look forward to continueto unpack that with you and the
rest of this series.
