(San Juan) - Olga Vega Pérez, lideresa comunitaria del barrio Espinar, vecina del Caño Madre Vieja, en Aguada, explica la contrapropuesta comunitaria para crear la Reserva Natural Pantano Espinar y Caño Madre Vieja que las personas vecinas llevan proponiendo por más de dos décadas, ante los planes del Cuerpo de Ingenieros del Ejército de Estados Unidos (USACE, por sus siglas en inglés) de canalizar el río Culebrinas justo en la zona estuarina, lo que afectaría la capacidad de absorción del humedal ante eventos de inundaciones.
El Caño Madre Vieja ubica en la colindancia de los municipios de Aguada y Aguadilla en la costa noroeste de Puerto Rico. Es un área de estuario con manglares y humedales que se encuentran en buenas condiciones por no tener fuentes de contaminación conocidas.
El humedal del barrio Espinar y el Caño Madre Vieja se unen en un punto donde predominan los árboles de mangle, especialmente el mangle rojo (Rhizophora mangle) y otras especies de árboles como la emajagüilla (Thespesia populnea) y la emajagua (Hibiscus permabucensis), según detalla la organización comunitaria Reserva Natural Pantano Espinar y Caño Madre Vieja en su portal web.
El área de mangle sirve de barrera para proteger la costa de las marejadas y el humedal amortigua las inundaciones frecuentes en el área por el desbordamiento del río Culebrinas.
