Matt (00:00):
Welcome to Alkohology.
I wonder why they call it acocktail.
Yes, I'd like to know moreabout the Venus Vinifera.
I'm very interested in theterroir.
We talking about two carbons, six hydrogen and one oxygen atom
.
We talking about ethyl alcohol.
This episode Rum and CaptainMorgan.

(00:23):
Rum has its roots in the 17thcentury, primarily in the
Caribbean.
Sugarcane was introduced to theregion in the 1400s and was
cultivated widely.
The byproduct of sugarcanerefining molasses led to the
discovery that it could befermented and distilled into
what we now know as rum.
It is believed that rum wasfirst distilled on the island of
Barbados, where plantationowners discovered that

(00:44):
fermenting molasses couldproduce a potent spirit.
Early rum was rough andunrefined and quickly gained
popularity.
As we know, it was a populardrink among sailors and pirates,
becoming integral to Caribbeanculture, pirates in particular.
Popularizing rum led to itsassociation with swashbuckling
and adventure.
As distillation methodsimproved, caribbean rum became
smoother and more refined.

(01:05):
Today, it's produced acrossmany Caribbean islands, with
each one developing its uniquestyle and flavor profile.
Some of the most famousrum-producing nations include
Jamaica, puerto Rico, theDominican Republic and Cuba.
The origin of the word rum isunclear.
The most widely acceptedhypothesis is that it is related
to rum bullion, a beverage madefrom boiling sugar cane and

(01:25):
stocks.
It could also be related to theword rumbustion, which was
slang meaning uproar or tumult.
I can safely say I have beeninvolved in a couple of
rumbustions myself.
Some of the notable rumdistilleries in the Caribbean
currently are the MountgateDistillery in Barbados, appleton
Estate in Jamaica, havana Clubin Cuba, rum Bar and Court in

(01:46):
Haiti, four Square Distillery inBarbados, angostura Distillery
in Trinidad and Tobago and, yes, that is where Angostura bitters
also come from and the CaptainMorgan Distillery.
And that brings us to CaptainMorgan.
Captain Morgan Brand gets hisname from Captain Henry Morgan.
He was a 17th century Welshprivateer who became famous for

(02:08):
his exploits in the Caribbean.
Morgan's adventures as a pirateand privateer led him to fame
and fortune.
He raided Spanish settlementsin the Caribbean on behalf of
the English crown and eventuallybecame the Lieutenant Governor
of Jamaica.
The Captain Morgan Brandcapitalizes on his legendary
status, reflecting apirate-inspired image.
After its introduction, captainMorgan quickly gained

(02:29):
popularity due to its smooth andspiced flavor, which set it
apart from other rums.
In 1984, seagram launchedCaptain Morgan Original Spiced
Rum, which became a massive hit, especially in the US.
Currently, the Captain Morgandistillery is in St Croix, even
though the brand originated inJamaica.
A few fun facts about CaptainMorgan.

(02:51):
The recipe for Captain Morganwas originally created for
medicinal purposes In the early1940s.
Seagram CEO Samuel Bronfmanpurchased the Long Pond
distillery from the Jamaicangovernment and started producing
raw rum under the name CaptainMorgan.
One of the rum buyers, levyBrothers Pharmacy in Kingston
infused the rum with medicinalherbs and spices before aging it

(03:12):
and bottling it.
Upon trying the aged rum, bronfman purchased the rights to
the recipe and startedproducing the spiced rum
commercially under the CaptainMorgan label.
In 2010, a team ofarchaeologists discovered a
collection of iron cannons offthe coast of Panama, close to
where Captain Morgan lost fiveof his ships in the 17th century
.
The team had exhausted theirfunding before they could go any

(03:33):
further.
That's where the Captain Morgannamesake brand stepped in.
Rather than letting the shipsremain lost to the sea, captain
Morgan provided funding thatallowed the archaeologists to
conduct a survey and to narrowdown potential sites.
In 2011, a team of underwaterresearchers and volunteers
discovered a section of thestarboard side of one of Captain
Morgan's ships, along with anumber of unopened cocktail

(03:55):
boxes.
Here's another odd one for you.
The Captain Morgan pose wasofficially banned by the NFL In
a 2009 home game against theDallas Cowboys Eagles, wide
receiver Jason Avantimpersonated the captain's
stance in the end zone.
This provoked a penalty forexcessive celebration and days
later the pose was banned fromall touchdown celebrations.

(04:15):
Avant did have good intentions,though.
The pose was part of aguerrilla marketing campaign to
benefit the Gridiron Greats, anonprofit organization providing
financial grants and pro bonomedical care for retired NFL
players.
Captain Morgan also inspired anew way for doctors to fix
dislocated hips.
While the pose has faded fromthe football field, the medical
field has discovered itsorthopedic merits.

(04:36):
Hip dislocations can bedifficult to reset and risky for
patients.
In 2011, dr Gregory W Hendypublished a report in the Annals
of Emergency Medicine thatidentified a new approach the
Captain Morgan technique.
Dr Hendy argued that thecaptain's pose was a good
alternative for doctors havingto climb onto patients' gurneys.
The method was described assuccessful in 12 of 13 cases and

(04:59):
the report titled the CaptainMorgan technique for the
reduction of the dislocated hip.
Currently, there are 10different rums under the Captain
Morgan umbrella.
Those are the Black Spiced Rum,100 Proof Spiced Rum, silver
Spiced Rum, white Rum andCaptain Morgan Private Stock,
which is made from a blend ofCaribbean rums infused with
secret spices.
Captain Morgan also offersflavored rums, those being

(05:23):
Spiced Apple, coconut, pineappleand orange vanilla twist.
