Reinheitsgebot or, as many ofyou may know it in English, the
German Beer Purity Law.
What exactly is theReinheitsgebot?
Well, this law was enacted onApril 23, 1516 in Bavaria by
Duke Wilhelm IV and his brother, duke Ludwig X.

(01:07):
The purpose of this law was toregulate the ingredients in beer
to ensure both its quality andaffordability.
In its original form, thisdictated that only three
ingredients could be used water, barley and hops.
Yeast wasn't a part of the lawbecause at the time, the brewers

(01:27):
did not know it existed.
They relied on naturalfermentation from the wild yeast
within the air.
Why was this law so important?
First and foremost, itprotected the public.
Back then, some brewers woulduse questionable or even
dangerous ingredients in beersto try to enhance the flavor or

(01:47):
cut their costs.
There were stories of peopleusing soot, stinging nettles or
even hallucinogenic plants likehenbane or belladonna, and these
ingredients could make youseriously ill.
By restricting the ingredients, the law helped make beer safer
to drink ill.

to drink.

(02:07):
It also made sure that thegrains like wheat and rye, which
were essential for making bread, weren't used in beer.
This was critical for ensuringthat there was enough grain
available for food during timeswhen crops were scarce.
What happens if you were toviolate the Reinheitsgebot?
Well, if a brewer used anunapproved ingredient, they
could face serious consequences.

(02:28):
The offending beer would beconfiscated and the brewers
could be fined.
In some cases, they would beforced to destroy the entire
batch of beer.
So the brewers took the lawvery seriously.
You might be wondering how doesthis all connect to Oktoberfest
, the world's most famous beerfestival?
Well, only beers brewed withinMunich that follow the

Reinhardt's lasting influence, even though the law was relaxed
in the 20th century, in 1987,the European Court of Justice
ruled that it restricted freetrade within the EU, allowing
foreign beers with otheringredients to enter the German
market.
Still many breweriesvoluntarily follow this law
