New York made history on Thursday when it became the first state in the US to have an adult-use marijuana store run by a non-profit organization. Adults aged 21 or over can purchase cannabis products at the Housing Works store in Manhattan, with the first purchase being made by the executive director of the New York Office of Cannabis Management. Housing Works focuses on addressing homelessness and AIDS issues. Although 36 organizations have received Conditional Adult Use Retail Dispensary Licenses, there are concerns that non-profits selling adult-use marijuana may jeopardize their federal 501(c)(3) status, which makes them tax exempt.
