(00:10):
Welcome to media Melanie talks TV.
I'm Melanie and today I'm back to talk about The Buccaneers
season 2 on Apple TV Plus. In this video I will do a
reaction and review to episode 3called Get Her Out.
This episode description reads abetrayal, a reunion, and an
unexpected spark. Lizzie's enchanted birthday
party will be 1 to remember. If you watched my episode
(00:34):
preview, I sort of prognosticated on what I thought
each one of these little descriptors would mean.
We got some answers. The betrayal.
Nan told Theo the truth. Did anybody see that coming?
And not only did she tell him the truth, she protected his
mom, which Dowager was endlesslygrateful for.
(00:54):
But of course, then she goes andouts herself at the end anyway
in hopes of a reconciliation. The reunion.
This could actually go a few different ways.
It could go to the reunion of Nan and Theo at the party
following Theo's departure for three weeks.
It could also reference Lizzie and Mabel's mom coming to watch
the big engagement of it all forLizzie and Hector, but also
(01:19):
Dowager and a blast from her past Hectors dad Reed.
As it turns out, these two know each other, obviously had some
sort of something going on at one point.
And the chemistry from this first initial, them seeing each
other again after all these years, 10 out of 10.
(01:40):
And then the cherry on top of that, them dancing to Chapel
roads. Hey, babe, are you kidding me?
And even before then, she's like, it's just madding how well
you've aged. And he says well my knees would
tell a different story. The cutest scene maybe of the
whole season. Never thought I would be team
(02:01):
Dowager for anything but I am really rooting for her and Reid
this episode overall. A lot of things happened.
Nan did tell Theo the truth. Theo takes off.
They decide to go through with the party.
Lizzie and Maple's mom comes to visit.
Hector pops the big question. The Dowager and Hector's dad
(02:22):
situation. Can Cheetah and Dicky and Cora.
And might I add, can Cheetah andDicky?
What a cute couple, I love them too.
Dowager ends up telling Theo thetruth.
There's this whole discussion about it's OK for Theo and Nan
to be separated as long as there's an air produced.
Hello. Did anybody else pick up on
Handmaid's Tale vibes there? Because I sure did, especially
(02:44):
once the word vessel came into play.
Nan's able to find letters from Guy and Ginny that Dowager was
hiding, and Nan actually takes off for Italy.
And in a big cliffhanger ending,we also see Ginny getting up in
the middle of the night and potentially going to make a move
on Guy, all while Nan is on the way.
(03:05):
And as Nan is fleeing to go see Guy, Theo is looking for Nan
after he finds out the truth from his mom and it seems like
he's going to potentially forgive her or at least have
some sort of a continued discussion about it, but it's
too late because she's on her way.
Something the show has done so well is the missed timing of it
all. Timing is everything, and Nan
(03:28):
missed out on the timing with Guy in season 1.
Now Theo is missing out on potentially being able to have
some sort of closure or figure something out with Nan because
she's already on the run and Theo finding all of this out now
after the wedding. Especially the fact that both of
the most important women in his life have been lying to him
(03:48):
since the night before the wedding.
I am pretty devastated for Theo, but at the same time, the Theo
and Lizzie my theory and discussion video from last week
was our Theo and Lizzie end game.
I'm not saying I'm right about that, but I am saying there were
two very succinct scenes in thisepisode between Lizzie and Theo.
(04:11):
I think something is brewing there, which is going to mean
Hector, who is a great guy. I love him and I especially love
him for Lizzie, especially afterlast season and everything that
happened with Seton, who by the way, we did not see in this
episode, didn't mind that at all.
He is just the worst. But they are setting up this
Lizzie and Theo romance situation and now Lizzie is
(04:33):
engaged to marry Hector. How is this all going to shake
out? They are mirroring these two
love triangles. Before it was Theo and Nan and
Guy. Now it's going to be Theo and
Hector and Lizzie. Lizzie even tells Nan about the
letter that Guy wrote and she burned it and that is what
initially sparked Nan to go and look for the letter that prompts
(04:54):
her to go to Italy. So wow, this episode was jam
packed with so much. Another great episode.
It's really keeping up this pacing and momentum all from the
first episode. There really hasn't been much
downtime or unnecessary filler, which I really appreciate.
Before I get more into episode 3of the Buccaneers, please go
(05:18):
ahead like this video and hit that subscribe button.
I am here three times a week with Buccaneers videos.
I am doing reviews, episode previews and theory and
discussion video. So don't miss any of that.
But also looking ahead to July, I've got some great shows on my
radar as well, including The Institute on MGM.
Plus it's a Stephen King adaptation starring Mary Louise
(05:39):
Parker. It's giving Stranger Things
really dark, supernatural type of vibes.
Looks really great. Can't wait to cover that along
with Dexter Resurrection on Paramount Plus.
With Showtime and the final season of the summer, I turned
pretty, so be sure to stay tunedfor all of my TV talk all summer
long and beyond. Just a couple of initial
(05:59):
reactions here. First, the irony of Theo having
chosen Nan because she was not in it for his title.
She didn't even know who he was, that he was a Duke in the 1st
place. But now it's coming out that the
only reason she actually marriedhim was so she could use her
power to protect her sister. Wow.
(06:21):
I was also sort of surprised that Nan told Theo the truth in
the 1st place, and in doing thatalso protected Dowager, which
she later thanks Nan for of course.
And then comes sort of full circle and decides to tell Theo
the truth anyway, risking their entire relationship, all for the
sake of their reconciliation. As Hector's dad Reed said to
Blanche Dowager, all of this will have been a waste if you
(06:46):
don't continue this line. She gave up so much, a seemingly
more rebellious, footloose, fancy free sort of life, all for
this royalty and position and power, which is something that
obviously was not on the radar for her when they were younger.
Very interesting getting more context into Dowager's life
(07:07):
before she rose to power. I'm really rooting for her and
Reid. I think this relationship has a
lot of potential and it is such a young, fun show infusing a
more adult storyline into things.
I don't think it's going to harmanything and it will provide
more color as to who this character is, how she got here,
and the decisions that she's made for not only herself, but
(07:28):
Theo and Nan and the institutionas a whole.
And did you guys know the actor who play Nan and Theo we're
actually dating in real life? However, it does seem like they
have since broken up because they have not spent the last big
holidays together and allegedly Christine Froseth, who plays Nan
has been seen with another guy. At least that's what the
(07:50):
paparazzi is reporting. So very interesting and I wonder
if that has to do with their on screen vibes and chemistry this
season. Have you guys noticed a shift in
how those two characters relate to each other on screen?
If so, it could have to do with their real life breakup or just
the dramatic tension between these two characters given their
storylines. It's funny because when I
(08:11):
watched season 1, I did not realize that Christine and Guy
Remmers, who plays Theo, were dating in the 1st place.
So looking back, I can see that there may have been a little bit
more chemistry in season 1. The actors who play Lizzie and
Guy were also rumored to have been dating.
Matthew Broome and Audrey E Bragg were seemingly together
until they unfollowed each otheron social media in 2025, so they
(08:34):
may not be together anymore either.
Not as much impact as far as thestory goes because those
characters aren't typically in alot of scenes together, but very
interesting behind the scenes nugget there.
I mentioned the Chapel Row needle drop earlier during the
dance at Lizzie's birthday party, but there was another one
in there too, Serpents by SharonVan Etten as this episode was
(08:55):
ending. She is fantastic and I think
that song played really well at the end.
Overall, the soundtrack for the show in general is just a lot of
fun. Very modern, very young, which
is interesting given that it is a period historical drama.
And as I've been saying it, not normally my type of show, but
the Buccaneers has completely won me over.
People in the comments are saying OK, now you need to go
(09:17):
watch Gilded Age or Bridger Tannen.
Hey, I may just expand my TV landscape and palette a little
bit more because of this show. Getting into some highs from
this episode. A continued comment that I've
been making all season. The hair, the costuming, the
makeup, the set design, the cinematography.
This party did have a more whimsical feel and all of the
(09:40):
beautiful butterfly costumes andthe pretty face paint, everybody
is just so beautiful on this show.
It is such a pleasure just to watch it.
There were some pretty solid comedy moments in here as well,
starting with Conchita, Dicky, and Cora riding in the carriage
to the party. Conchita is telling Cora the
true nature of marriage, and it's not all just swimming in
(10:03):
the rain and fireworks. There's a lot of real life
elements to it as well, including paying the Butcher,
which circles back in this episode in a conversation
between Conchita and Dicky. But Conchita says to Cora, I'm
only a teeny bit older than you. They pan the camera over to
Dickie's face, who has this inquisitive look and says pure
(10:24):
comedy. And so subtle at that.
Dickie is becoming one of my favorite characters, not only
because he's giving Conchita a voice and letting her use her
intelligence and power to bring his family out of debt and
change their whole situation, but also he's pretty funny.
Now that Test Valley is out of the picture, it that has really
(10:45):
allowed for this couple to shineand show their true love for
each other, which Cora ends up seeing at the party later and I
think that reignites her need tosearch for a man because her
parents are obviously pushing her very hard.
But she's got some standards as well.
She thinks that men who like hats should be imprisoned, does
(11:06):
not like men with spindly legs, and wants Herman to wear yellow
socks and not care what anybody thinks.
And by the end of the party, there's a potential match there.
This whole venture by Conchita and Dickie is going very well.
In fact, Lizzie's mom wants to pay Conchita double the fee to
help get Mabel set up. Missus Elmsworth knows that
(11:29):
Mabel is interested in women. She caught her fooling around
with the maid or one of their staff members in Season 1.
I think she's picking up on something between Mabel and
Anoria, which drives her to get this deal going with Conchita to
get her other daughter married now that Lizzy is engaged to
Hector. Another comedic moment I loved
(11:51):
from this episode. Speaking of Mrs. Elmsworth, when
she and Mabel were in the woods, they witnessed the beautiful
proposal by Hector. Elmsworth says something like,
oh, they're walking away now. Mabel's like, yeah, mom, I have
eyes. I can see him right here.
The narration isn't needed. Mabel's character is so much
fun, the way she's not afraid togive it right back to her mom,
(12:13):
or to Anoria's mom for that matter.
And I've got to say, if you had to choose one of those moms,
would you go with Misses Elmsworth or would you go with
Lady Brittle? See, tough choice.
I'd probably go Elmsworth. Brittle.
See, seems like such a nightmare.
But Anoria and Mabel are both dealing with interesting mother
relationships. There was a funny little one
(12:35):
liner about mustache and how Cora said she didn't like them
and she, just like nobody, likesmustaches.
Ironically, Hector has a mustache.
He's still very attractive. I'm not really a mustache person
either. Facial hair wise, I don't mind a
good goatee. I don't even mind a beard.
But mustaches, not really my thing.
(12:56):
Drop your facial hair preferences down in the
comments. Are you T mustache?
Are you no mustache ever? Let me know.
Another funny line when Cora says in the olden days to
Conchita, there really is not much of an age difference
between these two. I can't imagine it's more than
five years. This is just like my children
(13:16):
saying, Hey, mom, do you remember back in the 1900s?
I say, children, can we not justsay the 1990's, the 1900s sounds
like hundreds of years ago. It is not, in fact, hundreds of
years ago. So I would love it if the young
people would stop saying back inthe 1900s because it makes me
feel really old. And can Cheetah is probably
(13:39):
feeling the same way here and she is still so young.
I feel you can Cheetah. I feel you.
Other hives from this episode. I love Hector, I think he is
great. He's a stand up guy.
It's going to break my heart when Lizzie cheats on him with
Theo. How he was applauding as Lizzie
walked into her party. You can tell he truly loves her
(14:03):
the way he proposed to her. Everything about him is 10 out
of 10 and he is being used as this plot device.
The actors who plays Lizzie talked about she had walls up
guarding her after the incident with Seton last season and it's
taken a lot for her to let her guard down and let somebody else
(14:24):
in. So to say yes to Hector and
welcome this new man into her life, she could get the fairy
tale ending that she has been wanting.
And she's the last one out of all the friends now to find a
husband. So there is this pressure for
her to get married as well. I just think it sucks because we
can all see it coming. Poor Hector.
(14:45):
He's going to be the new guy. The scandal of this show is
everything in terms of lows fromthis episode.
I was trying to figure out what I didn't like, but I think this
episode was actually pretty fantastic and maybe one of the
strongest of the season so far. Not a lot of lows for me.
(15:07):
I guess if I had to pick something, I wouldn't mind
seeing more of the Conchita and Dicky and the Ignoria and Mabel,
but we still get a fair amount of them on our screen.
So that's not even a real criticism because I think
they're doing a great job of balancing these different
storylines and keeping us vestedin every single one of these
characters and then introducing new storylines which don't feel
(15:28):
too heavy or weighted. Specifically the Dowager
romance. Did we need her to have a
romance? Probably not.
Is it coincidental that this blast from her past is Hector's
dad and this is what this party is in honor of?
Maybe a little bit coincidental,but I really don't care.
There's something about seeing the way Dowager smiles at this
man. We all deserve love, and I would
(15:50):
love to see Dowager have a happyending as well because as of
right now, things are not looking very happy.
Nana's taking off. There's potentially not going to
be an heir to to continue this Tintaggio line.
Is it possible that Theo and Lizzie will get together and
Lizzie will end up pregnant? Everybody will think that it's
Hectors baby, but really the true heir to Tintaggio will be
(16:14):
an illegitimate child by Theo and Lizzie.
Can anybody else see that happening?
Because I sure can. Really though, the most
devastating part of this whole thing was Nan telling the truth
to Theo and watching the despairon his face as he's putting
these pieces together. He says why did you not go with
them? Why would you marry me if Guy
(16:36):
has your heart? And she explains that she had to
do what she had to do. I don't blame Theo for taking
off. I am a little surprised that he
came back, but he had to. I mean, he's the Duke.
Where else is he going to go? He can't stay away forever.
One of my bigger questions though, is was he going to
actually forgive Nan and reconcile with her after his mom
(16:59):
told him the truth? Or was he going to maybe present
some sort of compromise? Maybe he's thinking, you know
what, I've got the spark with Lizzie.
Perhaps we can work something out.
I can secretly be with Lizzie. You can go and be with Guy.
Everything's going to be just fine, but at the same time,
Hector and Theo obviously know each other, so is Hector going
(17:20):
to go and betray another guy just like Guy did to him?
I don't know if I necessarily buy that.
But also, Theo's headspace rightnow is not great and again, who
can blame him? I also found it interesting that
Theo actually started making outwith Nan and it seemed like they
were going to get it on. Theo just could not go through
(17:41):
with it and do it. I thought it was maybe going to
be this final trace so that theycould produce the air and
everything would be just fine, but the fact that Theo
physically couldn't even do it speaks volumes to how he's
feeling about this betrayal. Will his character end up
betraying Hector? Really curious to see what his
character arc is going to be by the end of this season.
(18:04):
Who he's going to end up with. The novel The Buccaneers is
actually unfinished. I haven't read it so no spoilers
from the book. I am curious though to know,
does Nan pick Theo? Does Nan pick guy?
Does she pick neither one? Don't tell me in the comments
because adaptations are all different.
Some follow pretty loosely, somefollow closely, some really not
(18:24):
at all. But it will be interesting once
this does end, whether it is here in Season 2 or season 3 and
beyond, to figure out exactly how closely it does follow the
book. Let's get a little bit into the
specific conversation between Lizzie and Theo.
Last week when I did my video about our Theo and Lizzie end
game, I could see it starting tocome into play, but this episode
(18:49):
really solidified for me something between these two
characters. Theo says to Lizzie during the
party he's entirely unworthy of you.
You're sensational. Settling for anything less than
exceptional is an extraordinary risk.
I thought for sure they were going to kiss right there and
then at the scene at the end when they're having another
(19:11):
conversation. Alas, they did not.
But it's got to be coming soon, right?
Nan and Lizzie then have that conversation where Lizzie tells
Nan she burned the letter because Nan is like hey I've
been thinking about him this entire time and Lizzie's like Oh
no I thought you were happy she's not.
Lizzie tells her about the letter which prompts Nan to go
(19:31):
and get the letters to go find Guy and Ginny.
Now that she tells Nan about theletter and they've planted this
seed with Lizzie and Theo, do wethink Lizzie only told Nan about
the letter so she can be with Theo now that she knows that Nan
is not truly in love with him and she is still having feelings
for Guy? Or is Lizzie just a really good
(19:55):
friend who always tries to do right by those that she loves?
I almost think it's somewhere inbetween and she's probably
having this internal struggle about how to handle the
situation. Because it is no denying there
is a spark between her and Theo.In fact, Lizzie finds Theo again
as he's looking for Nan. Lizzie knows that Nan is gone
now. And Lizzie says to Theo that he
(20:18):
was right and his comment to hermade her feel a certain way.
Really thought the kiss was going to come here.
It did not. But back to the timing of it
all. This show does very well with
missed connections, playing withthe timing, making us feel
tragedy. Every time one of these
characters misses that time in the window for something to
(20:41):
happen, then it does not cue a bunch of other dramatic events.
Getting into Guy and Jenny and Paloma in Italy.
I love watching Paloma sticking up for Jenny as she's trying to
buy something at the market and they're very clearly trying to
take advantage of her. Paloma's like, no, she might be
beautiful, but she is smart. Love her stepping in.
(21:01):
And actually the actress who plays Paloma, this is her
American television debut. She's been on some Italian shows
before, never an American show, and I think she's doing a great
job playing this role. Poor Jenny is obviously not a
very good cook. She gives it her best effort.
It's not great. There's a food fight.
It was cute. And I guess circling back to the
(21:22):
lows of this episode, while I did think that was very cute,
did they need to have a food fight?
I mean probably not, and I'm noteven going to call that a low
because it was a cute moment, but did we need it have gone
either way, but the Jenny and guy of it all with all of the
talk Paloma has been having to Jenny about her and guy because
(21:43):
Paloma obviously thinks that they're married.
Jenny starting to think, hey, all the way down here, my
sister's nowhere to be found. I'm not getting any.
She comes out of bed, she goes and looks at Guy, who's sleeping
on the couch. And by the way, Guy has stepped
up so much for not only Nan, buther sister, bonding with
(22:04):
Freddie, helping take care of the baby, being there for Jenny
when he really doesn't need to. He's doing this for Nan.
Are Ginny and Guy going to hook up?
What do you guys think with the Theo and Lizzie and the Nan and
Guy? Do we need another big scandal?
(22:26):
Imagine if Nan comes down to find Guy and somehow, I don't
know, he and Jenny are in bed together.
Uh oh, that would not be very good at all.
What if Ginny got pregnant with Guy's baby?
That would introduce a whole nother different set of
circumstances. But let me ask you this, will it
be too much if Jenny and Guy do get together?
(22:47):
Now that we do have the Lizzie and Theo, we've got the Nan and
Guy. There's a lot of different
relationships and love trianglesgoing on here.
Do we need another one? Is there such a thing as too
many love triangles and do we need one now between two
sisters? Well, we already have one with
best friends. I will leave that to you to drop
in the comments and let me know.We didn't get a whole lot of
(23:11):
Mabel and Anoria content in thisepisode.
They both acknowledge that theirmoms are both a little bit
questionable, but hey, at least they have each other.
They're holding hands behind each other's back.
And I think Mrs. Elmsworth sees that, which is what prompts her
to talk to Conchita about takingMabel on for double the fee.
And you can see Conchita is like, I don't know if that's
really a good idea. I would hate to see Mabel forced
(23:35):
to marry a man and live in a marriage that very clearly will
not work for her. She had that opportunity last
season and decided not to do it.Who could blame her?
But will she ever have the opportunity to have a real and
public relationship with Anoria?Or will they always have to be
in the closet in this time, in this world?
(23:55):
This week's theory and discussion video will cover
Mabel and Anoria, so make sure that you catch that when it
drops. So lots of action in this
episode. So many things happening.
And as I mentioned, while there are all of these sort of side
plots and new characters and drama and scandal, I'm here for
it. I think it's helping really keep
us engaged and vested in all of these different characters.
(24:19):
But what do you guys think? Are you finding there to be too
many things happening? Should they be focusing
somewhere instead of another place?
Really curious to know how everybody is feeling so far
about this season and also Episode 3.
