(00:10):
Welcome to media Melanie talks TV.
I'm Melanie and today I'm back to talk about this summer.
I turned pretty season 3, the final season coming this month
on Prime Video. I've already done a little bit
of a teaser preview, haven't yethad a chance to get into a full
trailer breakdown. So I've got a special guest
today and we are going to go over a little recap from season
(00:33):
1 how we left off in season 2. Talk a little bit about Team
Jeremiah versus Team Conrad and breakdown this trailer.
Along with that, we'll also talka little bit about what we hope
for and expect here in this third and final season.
And without further ado, I wouldlove to introduce to all of you
my friend Sherry from Teen DramaWhore.
(00:54):
What's up Sherry? Thanks for joining today.
Hey Melanie, thanks for having me.
Of course. And we've been friends now for,
gosh, I'm gonna say close to five years, maybe something like
that. And we first met through our
mutual love of television on theBeverly Hills 9O21-O show with
Pete and Chuck and Larry, which was a lot of fun.
(01:17):
And since then, we've also done a few other things together.
Yeah, we collaborated on a trivia night.
It was all about Beverly Hills and then Artona, and that was a
lot of fun. And well, I'm a full time teen
drama whore and writing on my sub SEC newsletter about it.
In my day job, I'm an editor andI had the privilege of
recruiting you, Melanie, a couple of years ago to work on
(01:38):
one of the sites that I edit foraccordcutting.com.
And it was so fun getting to brainstorm ideas together, talk
television, and put together these really cool articles.
I loved doing that. Cherry and I used to also
podcast on Yellow Jackets. So we did a lot of Yellow
Jackets content together and lots of other shows as well.
And then now here I am with my own channel and having the
(02:01):
privilege of getting one of my friends and fellow TV lovers to
come and join me. So thank you.
And you know, one more note. So the summer I turned pretty
heavy on the love triangles obviously, and we connected over
Beverly Hills 9O21-O, which if anyone who's watched the show
before knows this was one of theinitial love triangles, at least
(02:21):
for me back in the 90s that got me interested in this genre.
So Brenda, Dylan and Kelly, I'vealways been team Brenda, right?
And you are team Kelly. And I just want to mention in
all of the toxicity and TV fandoms out there, we can still
be friends and have different viewpoints on TV shows.
(02:42):
It's quite easy actually Sherry,we've differences aside and are
respectful and have meaningful conversations without
disparaging one another. So just wanted to mention like
for all the team, Conrad and Jeremiahs and any of the hate
out there in the fandom, like wecan all just get along fine and.
Sherri, we are proof of that. Yes, absolutely.
And you know, I gave up long agotrying to fight for my side and
(03:06):
try to convince other people there's no winning.
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter.
Whatever happens on screen is Canon.
And just so you know, it's Canonthat Kelly and Dylan ended up
together. All right, I'm not going to
argue with that. And also just rest in peace to
Shannen Doherty and Luke Perry, who brought so much love to both
of those roles. And I mean, that TV show is
(03:28):
always going to be one of my favourites ever.
And you write about a lot of TV shows in your teen drama sub
stack as well. And I've got that link up on the
bottom of the screen. So I'm also going to encourage
everybody to go and subscribe. Cher, you've got some really
great TV content out there. So yeah, everybody go do it.
Thanks, Melanie. Yeah, I've been doing this
version of teen drama horror foralmost five years, but the
(03:52):
original dates back to 2008 in its current iteration.
It's a weekly newsletter that comes out on Tuesdays.
So every Tuesday I publish teen drama links.
And it just features a roundup of all news related to the
genre. And specifically the six shows
that I write about, which are Beverly Hills 9 on 210, Dawson's
Creek, EOC, Wintry Hill, Gossip Girl, and The CW is 9 on 210.
(04:16):
And then I went with that on. Once a month I do a different
kind of feature that's on a specific topic related to the
genre in these shows. And then twice a year I host
trivia nights. And it's just a lot of fun to be
hanging out with fellow teen drama horse.
That is a lot of fun and at the end of this video, we're going
to get a little bit more into some similarities between the
(04:36):
Summer I Turned Pretty and Dawson's Creek, but we'll save
that for the end. For now, we can dive into the
Summer I Turned Pretty. And my first question for you,
Sherry. I have not read any of these
books, so I've approached watching this show as just ATV
viewer. I don't know any spoilers.
What about you? Have you read the books?
So I went into the show pretty blind except for the trailer.
(04:58):
I had not read any of the books at the time.
So I watched the first season, then I read the first book, then
I watched the second season, andthen I read the second book.
So I've not yet completed the trilogy.
I'm purposely waiting to watch season 3 and then I'll read the
book. It's pretty amazing that I've
read the first two books and there's so much that I don't
even remember. Like I have the basic platforms
(05:21):
that were on the TV show season, things like that.
So while I remember, you know, obviously what I watched, the
books are not as ingrained in myhead and in my memory yet.
So have broad strokes ideas of of of season 3.
I think I've been spoiled on theultimate pairing of sorts, but I
(05:42):
don't know exactly how things unfold and I'm excited to find
out. Me too, I have not seen any
spoilers and in fact I've been really trying hard to
intentionally avoid them so I don't get spoiled, but would you
say that the book or the TV showfollows the book pretty closely?
Is it a loose adaptation just overall?
What are your thoughts on that? I would say it's pretty similar.
(06:05):
I wouldn't, I wouldn't say it's a loose adaptation.
I would say it's pretty close. You know, the difference between
the television medium, medium and the book publication medium
is, is you have to do things in in different ways.
You know, how you paint a picture is different showing
versus telling the amount of space you have to go into
different details or into somebody's head or things like
(06:28):
that. So there's some things like
that. I watched the first two season
actually with another friend of ours, Jessica Jimeno, and she
has read the books and kind of encyclopedia about it.
She was always pointing out to me, oh, this one was a little
bit different. Oh, this was changed, but
nothing that was all that significant.
So from my limited perspective, I would say that the show is
(06:51):
pretty closely following the books.
OK, love Jessica, by the way. She's fantastic.
So let me ask you this, the big question here.
Are you team Conrad or Jeremiah and why?
I'm Team Conrad and it totally tracks for me with many of my
pairings. I generally prefer the angsty
guy, the guy that's broody, the guy who has, you know, some
(07:13):
emotional trauma, things like that.
The guy who is longing for the girl but can't be with the girl
or the girl is forbidden fruit. You know, that's really common
in a lot of my pairings, whetherit's, you know, Kelly and Dylan,
Pacey and Joey, Lukas and Payden, Ryan and Marissa.
You know, there there's this common theme between all of them
(07:36):
and Conrad and and belly fit right in there.
Okay, it's funny because I feel like I started off more team
Jeremiah, but now after last season and she ends up with
Jeremiah, at least for now. I don't know, I just you can
still feel that connection and chemistry between her and
(07:56):
Conrad. So I feel like I'm jumping over
to be more of team Conrad wear. I appreciate Jeremiah as the
nice guy. He's more of like the Brandon to
the Dylan, if you will. And I've always gone for the bad
guys too, so or bad boys or whatever.
So, so I think I'm right there with you and you know, I've got
to get you watching the Buccaneers on Apple TV.
(08:17):
Plus talking. About love triangles.
And actually Leighton Meester, who was formerly on Gossip Girl.
I know you were a big fan of that show as well, so yeah,
sure. I report back when you watch the
Buccaneers because I seriously think you love it.
I'm doing like 3 videos a week on this show.
It is so good. Cannot recommend it enough.
But anyway, you know. I think, I think you're a
comparison though with Brandon and Dylan and Jeremiah and
(08:38):
Clodrod was actually pretty apartment.
And the reason why that also resonates for me beyond just,
you know, bad guy, good guy dichotomy.
If Kelly and Dylan are my all time favorite couple of any TV
show, Brandon and Kelly are actually my second favorite.
And that might seem strange, right?
Like how can I want her with Dylan, but also love her with
(09:01):
Brandon so much? And it's very similar to the
fact that, yes, I really, you know, love Peyton and Lucas.
They are my ship. But that doesn't mean I didn't
like Lucas with Brooke. And so it's the same thing here.
I don't have a problem with Jeremiah Belly.
I do like them. I think there's maybe a certain
level of immaturity to their relationship, not just due to
their ages, but I really do lovethem together.
(09:22):
So being, you know, team Conrad doesn't mean I'm an anti
Jeremiah. I like Jeremiah and Billy just
fine, but at the end of the day,who do I want Billy with?
It's Conrad. OK.
And there's another couple on this show, Sherry.
And I think we're both on the same page about Steven and
Taylor. Like do we care?
(09:43):
I no. We don't.
Don't and we even saw a flash ofthem in the trailer with Steven
below Taylor sorority house window and first of all the
outfit he's wearing like what's up with those pants?
But also really just could care less and I don't mind.
I'm OK with focusing just on thebelly.
Conrad and Jeremiah, I have it all.
(10:04):
I agree and it it transcends me even being a couple.
I don't like either character individually either, which is
sad and maybe insulting to them, but I just don't have patience
for either one of them. Their personalities annoy me and
but I think we're stuck. With them backing up a little
bit to season 1 of the show, that of course was when they set
(10:28):
the table for this big love triangle between Belly and the
Fisher brothers. There's a lot of Susanna content
in Season 1 and Season 2, you know, dealing with the the
tragedy of Jeremiah and Conrad'smom being sick, navigating that
and belly growing up. And I mean, she's always carried
this flame for Conrad. We got more of that in Season 1
(10:51):
and then think shifted in Season2.
They did. They did.
You know, we kind of ended Season 1 on a high.
If you were rooting for Conrad and Belly and then Season 2
started and then you were just like, given this shock that they
were no longer together and it was kind of a little bit of a
slow burn of finding out what happened.
And then, you know, season 2 ends with her with Jeremiah.
(11:13):
And so there's just together, not together, together with the
other one, you know, it's just alot of up and down.
A lot of up and downs and another big plot point from
Season 2 was the Cousin's Beach house and what was going to
happen with Susanna not being around anymore.
And I mean, fortunately they were able to work with Mr.
Fisher and Susanna's sister. And it was interesting too,
(11:37):
getting to kind of see the cousin storyline last season in
Cousin's Beach. Thought that was added a little
bit more depth though. Interested too.
Are we going to see them again here in season 3?
I don't know. I don't know either, but I love
seeing that house, that pool. If I live there I would just be
outside of that pool every day. Sherry, tell us where the show
(11:59):
is filmed, by the way. The show was filmed where I live
in Wilmington, NC, which is alsowhere Dawson's Creek and Wintry
Hill were filmed. So this whole town is steeped in
teen drama, legacy, and lore, and The Summer I Turn Pretty is
concealing that. But you know, I moved here after
both of Dawson's Creek and Wintry Hill had ended.
(12:19):
So it's been interesting living here while The Summer I Turn
Pretty has filmed and watching the show.
When I'm living here and seeing,Oh, I recognize this, Oh, I
recognize that, and I have another invention to my viewing
experience. So have you visited any of the
filming locations? Not intentionally, you know, I
just, you know, going about my life.
(12:39):
I've been at some of the places where they filmed, you know, the
indoor of the arcade, you know, was filmed at a place called
Jungle Rapids and I've been there.
Or they were on the Carolina Beach boardwalk and I've been
there and so on and so forth. But I can't say I've done and
dedicated this summer. I turn pretty tour of the town.
Right. Well, you know what, Sherry, If
I come visit you, that's what we're going to do because as you
(13:01):
know, I like to go visit TV showfilming locations.
I've done a lot of them for Beverly Hills Nine, O 2 and O In
fact, I've got a video up on thechannel from where we went to
Roxbury Park in Lai, went with Pete and Chuck and Larry got to
talk a little bit about everything that was filmed there
and some other quintessential locations as well.
And Animal Kingdom. I've done some Animal Kingdom
(13:22):
locations, which filmed in San Diego where I live, but just
going full circle here, The Summer I Turn Pretty takes place
in Massachusetts, where I grew up.
So I love that there's this geographic connection to both of
us in this show that we really both enjoy watching.
And I know that we'll get into this later, but that is one of
the other things the show has common in Dawson's Creek.
(13:42):
Dawson's Creek filmed here in Wilmington, NC, but it's set in
the fictional Cape sign, Massachusetts.
So both shows are filming in theSouth.
I'm passing them off as a New England state.
Yeah, I will say, though, I buy it as New England.
Just growing up as a New Englander, it does read very New
England. So I think they do a good job of
it. But also, North Carolina is such
(14:03):
a beautiful state, so it's nice that they're able to film so
close to where you live. I think that's really cool.
Yeah, and it's great for the local economy too.
Heck yes it is. Go production union strong.
I'm in the union. So yes, love that.
Why don't we get into the trailer?
Let's start with the songs that we hear.
It's Taylor Swift. Jenny Hahn, the author of the
(14:25):
book, big Taylor Swift fan. She's been present in quite a
bit of the series. Well, fortunately, you and I are
both Swifties, so we have an appreciation for the use of the
songs. And we know that they've, you
know, all been Taylor's versionsof the timing of when the show
came out and what was going on with her masters and things like
that. And the use of them has just
(14:48):
been impeccable. And right song at the right
moment, the right needle drop. They're just so fitting between
what the lyrics are and the plots that they're
soundtracking. And, you know, some fans may
argue that the use of daylight and red in the trailer give away
(15:09):
some things that are, you know, the trailer's use of daylight
and red. You know, some fans have been
arguing, and they may turn out to be right, that that's kind of
giving little hints of where things are going to shake out
between Conrad and Jeremiah and who ends up with Belly.
I'm not going to try to focus onthat or think about that, but I
will say 10 out of 10 with the Taylor Swift needle drops and
(15:31):
the show just has such a young feel to it.
And when they can infuse music like that, that's so culturally
relevant and popular, I just think it's such a cherry on top.
I'm hoping we get more Taylor Swift in the season as well.
We have to. There's no way that they're
going the whole season without featuring at least one that are
so song. This trailer was not the end of
(15:52):
it, It was just the beginning. And some past needle drops from
Taylor Swift throughout the summer.
I turned pretty. Season 1 and 2 we've had the way
I loved you, Exile. Snow on the beach, That one by
the way, like could not have been more perfect.
Sweet nothing. This love Last kiss delicate and
invisible string. Plus the re recordings of This
(16:13):
Love and Last Kiss Taylor's versions.
I'm obsessed with the music hereSherry every single time they
play a Taylor Swift song or another popular current song.
So well placed. So, so totally well placed.
And I will say that I'm partial to this love and exile from the
ones that you named. And I want to circle back to
something you said that like it it the show feels young and fun.
(16:35):
And the word young struck me because when the trailer for
season 1 came out and I didn't really know anything about the
show. Young is the feeling that I had.
I thought, am I finally getting too old for the genre?
Something about it felt just really young to me and like I'm
not the demographic and is is itvery middle school?
(16:56):
And then I watched the first season and felt completely in
love with it. So there is no age limit.
I'm loving teen dramas. There is not.
I'm in my mid 40s. I know I'm older than you are.
I have no shame whatsoever in watching any of these shows.
I am here for all of them. I mean, The Buccaneers included.
And I've always loved teen dramas.
And it's funny because like The Buccaneers is more of a
(17:16):
historical drama, which is not my thing at all.
But when you have the strength of a strong teen, young adult
audience, storylines and plot points, I think that almost
creates more of a universal appeal because even though we're
older, it almost makes us feel young again again and reminisce.
It's that nostalgia of our younger years, and I really
(17:37):
appreciate that. I think you're completely right
and I hate when people describe this genre or these shows as a
guilty pleasure. I don't feel guilty at all.
I love these things. I can explain why they are
worthy television and not just, you know, something to ride off.
And yeah, we are riding high andwe are rider dies for teen
dramas. Yes, we are.
(17:59):
And Speaking of other guilty pleasure, even though that term
isn't great, shows the waterfront on Netflix that feels
like an adult Dawson's Creek andit's not teen driven at all, but
it still kind of has that feel to it a little bit, if that
makes sense. And I will tell you I binged the
heck out of it. I feel like other reviewers were
kind of like, you know, iffy, stiff acting.
(18:19):
Writing isn't great, but I didn't mind.
I found it to be a good summer watch.
And hey, we are all allowed to like what we like, so.
Here we are. It's interesting there calling
it an adult Dawson's Creek because it does have some, I
don't know, serious storylines that not the Dawson's Creek
didn't have serious storylines. But you know, as much as there
(18:41):
are similarities, there are differences.
But it's important to note that both shows are from Kevin
Williamson and the Waterfront, Like the Samurai Term Pretty and
like Dawson's Creek was also filmed here in Wilmington.
Gosh, just crushing it with the production there.
I mean, I've talked about movingto Wilmington before.
I mean, goodness, with all the shows filming there and my
background in production, who knows, maybe I'll end up there
(19:03):
and working on one of these shows.
Boy, that would be really cool. I would welcome you with open
arms. Thank you.
Thank you. But getting more into the
trailer, I think a big theme forthis is first loves,
acknowledging first loves, the impact they have on us as
people. And the line in there, the belly
says first loves are important, but they're not as important as
(19:25):
lasts. So for you, Sherri, where you're
watching the show, but you haven't yet read the third book
and don't know for sure what happens, what is your
inclination? Do you think that Jeremiah is
Belly's last love? I think that's what they want
us, I think, right. I think it could be what we
would call a red herring or a misdirect.
You know, as we see in most of the trailer, Billy's all in
(19:48):
Jeremiah to the point of, you know, all of a sudden they're
talking about getting married. So I think that line is supposed
to make you think that Conrad isthe past, Jeremiah is the
future, one is the first one, the other one is the long
lasting love. But we don't know at what point
in the series in in the season that she delivers that line.
And I can understand if it's delivered, you know, early in
(20:10):
the season that that, yeah, it probably is referring to
Jeremiah, but we don't know that.
It's entirely possible that her first love and the last love end
up being one of the same. And you know, even though
they're with the same person, they are two different types of
love, especially when you've hada breakup in between.
Between and you get back together.
Yes, I am dying to know how it shakes out.
(20:32):
And we learned in the trailer that Belly and Jeremiah are
getting married. And I think one of my favorite
parts when was when Belly's mom is like, wait, what?
And it just sort of pauses and halts everything.
And I'm right there with Belly'smom.
I was like, wait, what? What are what are we doing?
They're so young. I mean, yeah, not going to
(20:54):
happen, right? How can you not be there with
Laurel, you know, in in what world do those two kids and they
are kids come to you and say we're getting married and you
are like, yeah, great idea. You know, we've seen teen
marriage before in the genre, most notably with One Tree Hill.
We have Nathan and Haley gettingmarried while they're in high
school. And it was ridiculous then, It's
(21:16):
ridiculous now. And just because that
relationships did the test of time does that does not mean
that it was the right idea to married in high school.
And you know, I think a common criticism of Belly is this
immaturity that she has to her. And on the one hand, I want to
give her grace for that because when you're a teenager growing
up, you are immature. You don't know better, you don't
(21:38):
have the life experience and thelived experience.
But at other times where immaturity can be frustrating.
And so on the one hand, this is so ridiculous that they're
saying that they're going to getmarried.
And on the other hand, I think it's totally in character for
their personalities and their inability to see long term big
picture, what it means to be an adult, what it means to be in a
(21:58):
long term relationship and things like that.
And I think the trailer, again, you know, makes us want to think
that we're seeing a wedding and that she's walking down the
aisle to Jeremiah. Is it actually going to play out
that way? As you mentioned with red
herrings and Mr. XI mean, in my mind, this is all one big red
herring and she's gonna end up with Conrad.
(22:18):
I I can't see it happening any other way.
And again, this is me not knowing any spoilers or what
happens in the book. And we had that part of the
trailer where Taylor is talking to Conrad and she's like, what,
you just expect her to drive away into the sunset and blow up
her life 'cause you remember sheexisted?
So what do we think is gonna happen?
Is Conrad gonna go and talk to Taylor about it or did he
(22:42):
already talk to Belly? Like how does 1 interrupt that
potential marriage to her, his brother?
Well, we know that there's some kind of time jump, right?
We, we know from where we left off, the characters are now in
college, so we know there's beensome passage of time.
And it's unclear what the communication situation was
between Conrad and Belly during that time.
The trailer presents it or makesyou want to think that they must
(23:04):
have gone incommunicado until Belly opens the door and Conrad
is standing there and perhaps that, you know, figuratively
opens the door to them, you know, being back in each other's
worlds and feelings developing. And I would guess that there's
some kind of inciting incidents that causes Taylor to lash out
at Conrad like that versus Conrad, you know, choosing to go
(23:24):
to talk to Taylor of all people because, you know, she's always
been Team Jer for the reason notto like her.
But you know, I, I have to agreethat, you know, it, it has to be
Conrad and the end because otherwise it feels like there's
no purpose for a third season, right?
Because if season 2 ends with Jeremiah and Belly together, and
(23:45):
then, you know, this series endswith with Belly and Jeremiah
together, it's like, well, we didn't know what the point,
right? What was the point exactly,
right? So you have to think that this
season is going to be taking us on a different direction, or
maybe starts out seemingly in the same direction but we end up
(24:05):
at a different destination. I like that.
And at the end of last season, Conrad was going off to
California to get away from the belly and Jeremiah of it all.
And we do have the time jump. What do you make of doctor or
potentially intern Fisher in this picture?
And also, why does his hair lookso bad?
I mean, that's kind of Conrad that his hair always looks a
(24:26):
little strange. He has reminded me of a
combination of Leonardo DiCaprioand Michael Pitt, who was also
on Dawson's Creek. That's that's who I see in the
face and the hair. And yeah, it's it's a very 90s
kind of look. And what's interesting about,
you know, there being this time jump is that even though they
(24:47):
did take some time off from filming to the writers strike
and that's why this season was delayed, they really don't look
all that different age wise. So I look at Conrad in that in
his white medical code and I seea baby.
I see he still has that baby face.
So it's a little hard to take him seriously as a as a doctor.
And you know, as much grief as as we might giving might give
(25:07):
belly about being the immature. Conrad, of course, can too as
well. So we certainly hope that he's
grown up a bit if he's going to be somebody's doctor.
Yes, and other Conrad content wesaw here in the trailer, Conrad
is at a bar. He is with a different girl and
she's asking him, have you ever been in love?
Well, as we've gone over, I havenot read the third book yet, so
(25:29):
I don't know who the hell this woman is, if she's even in the
book version or was only added for the sake of the TV
narrative. But you know, the way it's
presented in the in the trailer,it seems that, you know, she
might be a platonic pal. You know, someone that he can
talk to about what have you. Or we end up seeing them, them
hooking up and, you know, it only actually pushes him back to
(25:50):
belly and he realizes, you know, this New Girl, this redhead that
we saw is a substitute. And it's helping me mask who I
really have feelings for. Yeah, that could definitely be.
And it worked well in the trailer as a device to bring
those flashbacks in and show us some of the history between
Belly and Conrad, which is rife with drama and love and first
(26:15):
times and just. I'm getting goosebumps even
talking about it. I mean, oh, they're just,
there's just something about them, that connection.
And there's this passion that I just don't feel between Belly
and Jeremiah. And also, I don't like the
nickname Jair. Can we just not say Jair
anymore? I don't know.
I mean, I get it better than Jerry, I guess, but not a fan of
(26:35):
Jer. Just throwing it out there.
No, I agree. And I kind of hate myself for
using the term earlier, but I, Ithink there's, there's a
striking difference between the two pairings because I look at
Belly and Jeremiah and I see youthfulness, I see fun, I see
innocence. And then I look at Billy and
Conrad and I see something that's a lot deeper.
(26:55):
Yeah, and potentially more sustaining.
I'm wondering, since we see the wedding scenes a little bit here
in the trailer, is it going to be interrupted?
Is it going to be the type of thing where she's trying to say
I do? And then Conrad Bussen or I
mean, actually, I'd imagine he'sgoing to be the best man.
And how does that work? I mean, the conversation between
(27:16):
Jeremiah and Conrad. Hey, brother, would you mind
being my best man for this wedding to the girl that you've
always been in love with and who's probably still in love
with you? What do you say, Conrad?
I I mean I'm interested to see how the wedding logistics of it
all work out as well. Well, I'm going to zip my lips
here because I believe I have been spoiled on on the wedding
and you know, I'm afraid if I say anything it's it's going to
(27:40):
ruin things. So OK.
Well, I appreciate that, and forthose of us who don't know the
spoilers, it just makes sense that they are setting up this
table for the tablecloth to be ripped out from underneath and
everything to proverbially go flying everywhere.
It does seem like they're setting us up for Conrad because
to your earlier point, why wouldthey even be having a third
season if they're not going to do the switch again between
(28:03):
brothers? It just doesn't even make sense.
Yeah, it doesn't make sense to do a third season if it's just
the status quo, which is she's starting with with Jeremiah,
she's ending up with Jeremiah. It's it's too short of a of a
time window. Absolutely is.
And there was another line of dialogue in there.
Everywhere I go, there's a memory of Conrad.
(28:23):
And at one point Conrad and Belly are together and she's
saying you're all grown up and he's sort of saying the same
thing. And there's just something in
the way they're talking to each other that does make me feel
like they will be coming back together again.
And I guess the question will be, is it going to be something
behind Jeremiah's back before the wedding?
(28:43):
How will that translate into thewedding itself?
I mean is Belly going to cheat on Jeremiah with Conrad and feel
guilty about it and then at the wedding just lose it?
I I don't know. This is all just obviously
guessing, but I don't. Know, what can I say?
What can I say? I think you're making an
assumption about when this wedding is taking place.
(29:06):
OK, fair. We're going to leave it there.
OK, fair. OK, interesting.
Interesting. Well, another thing we saw in
the trailer, Jeremiah punching Conrad.
What do we make of that? I did pull yes, it's a little
blurry look that's. Amazing.
(29:26):
No, the blurriness is awesome because that's how you know you
got that action shot. Like they're both in motion in
that screen grab. It's amazing.
Well done. Oh thank you, I actually did it
at .5 speed so I could try to get it as close as I could
without being blurry. But is this what?
When does this take place? I guess is a big question as
(29:48):
well and you're just mentioning too like I'm making an
assumption about the timing of the wedding, so I wonder if the
show is playing with time in some way.
I mean, when is this slap? We can assume it's over a belly
obviously. Do you have any guesses as to
what this punch could mean? Well, the logical thing is to
think that it's over belly, right?
(30:09):
And, and that's where I would goto.
But we have seen them fight before, namely at the the
cotillion and the the debutante ball where Jeremiah found out
about his mom being sick and that Conrad knew and that and
that caused them to have that physical incidence.
So it's possible that it's Susanna related again for all we
know. But in this case I am completely
(30:30):
blind. I have no idea.
I'm dying to find out. Right.
And Speaking of Susanna, there'sa line in here as well where
Belly says how are we supposed to do this without both of our
moms? And that actually broke my heart
a little bit because Susanna wasa great character, such a good
mom and nurturer. Would like to think she will be
there in spirit, but I'm assuming we'll also probably get
(30:53):
some sort of Susanna flashbacks as well.
I feel like it wouldn't be the summer I turn pretty if we
didn't. You know, they they kept her
alive via flashbacks in season 2.
So I think that, you know, she'swith us more than in just spirit
in season 3 as well. And you know, I I can't say that
this sound really cruel. I can't say that I wish that she
(31:14):
that she was alive in regards to, you know, her being this
great character because she really is the inside inciting
device. She heard her death, her
sickness. All these things are the hinges
on which the plot twists and everybody's emotional state
changes and things like that. So I think this, the tragic
journey that the character went on was necessary for the plots
(31:36):
to go in the directions that they've been going.
And so then that begs the question, is she going to drive
more plot? Is she going to be the reason
why a storyline twists or changes in this season as well?
Right, because Susanna was always sort of Team Conrad and
Belly as well. She's thought that ever since
they were young and it would be a little bit of a happy ending
(31:58):
to have them end up together. Also just for that reason, to
really give credence to the feelings intuition that Susanna
had and knowing her son and knowing belly like a daughter
and knowing that these two couldpotentially be soulmate.
Yeah. You know, you want to believe
that she was right, that she wason to something that she knew
before they even realized themselves and that she not that
(32:19):
she could see into the future orpredict the future, but that,
you know, I'm just some level. She knew that this was this was
the pairing and which I which I it's not to say that, you know,
had she lived or had she known about Jeremiah Belli that she
wouldn't have loved them as welland been happy for them or what
have you. But, you know, it's hard not to
put a lot of stuff into house, Santa felt.
(32:41):
Speaking of other emotional things, in the trailer we had a
little sequence where first we saw belly running looking very
upset. It looks like the same type of
night lighting scenery where this potential car accident
could happen. This is right before I pulled a
still of that scene. That looks a lot like Steven,
(33:03):
right, Sherry? It it sure does.
It can't be any other character unless they're, you know,
introducing some evil twin that we haven't met yet and just
taking a page out of it. Daytime soap opera.
But do I care that he gets hit by a car?
I mean, I'm not. It would be so tragic,
especially for Belly to lose a brother after having lost
(33:25):
Susanna, who is a mother figure to her.
But it's not looking very good just based on that little flash
that we saw. So is there also some potential
tragedy ahead? Well, of course, you know,
people get into car accidents every day and they're seriously
injured, but they don't die. So and not to say that even in
car accident we were seriously injured isn't tragic it it is,
(33:46):
but we don't have to be assumingthe worst and that as a fatal
accident. That's right.
Very good point. And I guess we'll see, but for
now, I don't know, things might not be looking good for Steven.
TBD. We will find out.
I did pull this picture of bellyas well, looking beautiful in
her dress. If that is a wedding dress.
Again, you mentioned I shouldn'tmake any assumptions about the
(34:08):
timing of it all, so I don't know exactly what that means,
but she does look really great. Of course, and how can you not
when you're a little of tongue? That means she's beautiful.
Yes, exactly she is. I've got to say this trailer got
me very excited for season 3, which drops on July 16th on
Prime Video with the 1st 2 of 11episodes.
(34:29):
I've got to say, I'm so glad this is a weekly watch.
I'm so over the binge formula. It's too much all at once, too
much pressure and some shows just work better as a weekly
watch. And I think this third and final
season of this summer, I turned pretty will definitely fall into
that category. I completely agree with you, but
just on a selfish note, July 16th is the day after my
(34:50):
birthday and the day after Bryant Austin Green's birthday
and so it just feels like I'm getting this little present the
day after my birthday. And I completely agree.
I'm very anti Bin's drops and I know that something has dropped
all, you know, 10 episodes or however many as the bear just
did days ago. On my birthday, by the way,
that's so. Funny, it kicks me out because I
(35:12):
know, you know, so many people are, are watching as fast as
they can and there's going to beon this, all this online
discourse and all the trade publications that I love to read
are going to be writing about itand how do I avoid stumbling
across things? It's just, it's a, it's a
headache to me because you mighthave, you know, 10 hours to set
aside to just, you know, bend straight through.
(35:33):
I don't, I watched the bears news season over like 4
different nights and even that was a rush.
You know, the bear dropped. I can't remember it was, you
know, Wednesday or Thursday, andI still rushed to get it done by
Monday to just, you know, just finish it as quickly as possible
so I wouldn't have to avert my eyes on the Internet anymore.
And so I'm really glad that thisis not that type of release.
(35:54):
I love having let me look forward to every week.
I like knowing, oh, I'm watchingthis on Wednesday night and I
watched this episode and it whetmy appetite and it filled me up.
And, you know, I love having this appointment viewing where I
know it's coming out on Wednesday.
I'm going to watch it that night.
It's going to scratch that itch for me.
And then I have a whole nother week to look forward to getting
(36:15):
the next present, the next installment.
So I'm very excited for that. It's very nostalgic.
Nostalgic. It's a throwback, you know,
every Wednesday night at 8:00 PM.
Where were you and I growing up?We were waiting for Beverly
Hills 9.2 dot, come on. Of course, there is one
difference now, you know, even with it being a weekly release,
because generally we're we seeing it like 3:00 AM in the
(36:35):
morning. So many people are rushing to
watch it then as crazy as it seems, or they're watching in
the morning. And then even for that day, I
need to, you know, stay away from spoilers before I can watch
that night. So that's a small price to pay.
Yeah. Oh, absolutely.
I'm excited for the weekly drop.I actually still haven't even
finished the Bear. I keep falling asleep, which
maybe is a testament to how muchI'm not enjoying it.
(36:58):
But I will say I binge Squid Game and love Squid Game season
3. So I did manage to squeeze in a
binge. And it's funny because the
summer I turned pretty is not giving out screeners for the
press. So I'm thinking there's probably
not going to be a whole lot of spoilers out there.
And that really does help with the excitement and building
conversation and discourse around the show and keeping, I
guess, all vested. And I always appreciate a show
(37:20):
that has more than 10 episodes. I'll take 11 episodes.
I'm tired of the six, the 8:00. At the same time though, I guess
I'm also tired of it when shows get 8 or 10 episodes.
And then it probably should havebeen 6.
So I'm hoping that all 11 will feel full and not a lot of fluff
and filler. So that is one of my biggest
hopes I think, for the season. Yeah, Another thing with the bin
(37:41):
drop is that it drops and it's kind of over, right?
This we're going to savor. It's going to take the next
couple of months for us to get through this final season and
that makes me happy. And we're going to get to to
relish in it. Versus if they did a bin drop,
it would all be, you know, done in a in a day, if you could
watch it in a day, which we established if I couldn't, but
it would just be over too quickly after so much
(38:04):
anticipation. I couldn't be happier that it's
going to be a weekly release as well.
And before we go, Sherry, why don't we talk a little bit about
what you mentioned before and the fact that there are quite a
bit of similarities between the summer I turned pretty and
Stockton's Creek? It's really striking the the
similarities between the way certain things unfold with with
Pacey and Joey and how they unfold with Belly and Conrad.
(38:27):
So just in no particular order, certainly not chronological
order, but you know, this big blow up at prom between Conrad
and belly, Well, Pacey did it toJoey 1st.
And what's even crazier is that Joey's prom dress and and
Belly's prom dress are the same color and like so similar in
style that it is. It's just very eerie and
(38:48):
surreal. Belly telling Conrad that they
can't actually be together afterJeremiah finds out is extremely
reminiscent of Joey telling Pacey that they can't be
together after Dawson's finds out.
One of the most iconic lines from Dawson's Creek is Pacey
telling Joey I remember everything.
(39:08):
Well, we have Conrad telling Belly at one point I remember
everything. And then just, you know, going
away from the coupling and just other similarities in general.
You know, we had, we saw them have shenanigans last season on
the golf course, while we saw the Dawson's Creek characters
have shenanigans on the golf course.
(39:29):
And then another example, they have that all night study
session last season and then they jump in the pool the next
morning. Guess who also did that?
That's right, the Dawson's Creekgroup.
It's really striking to the point where you have to wonder
to Jenny Hahn and the producers of the TV show Binge Dawson's
Creek and be like, I'm going to copy that.
And I actually wonder what they would say if you pointed out
(39:52):
these things like Side by Side, which you can read in a 2023
edition of my newsletter that's still accessible on my sub stack
where I broke down all these comparisons and how they are.
Eerily similar. Oh, you know what?
I will get a link to that and also drop it here in the YouTube
description so everybody can go and read that.
Thank you for those points of comparison.
(40:13):
I think that's really interesting.
And Speaking of the golf course content, your neighbors, the new
Jon Hamm show on Apple TV Plus. They had literally the same
exact scene and I called it out of my review video.
I'm like, why does every show have to fall asleep at a golf
course or a Country Club and wake up another day after
having, you know, shenanigans? So it's funny.
I think that's a little overly done in general, but obviously
(40:37):
also done between Dawson's Creekand the summer I turn pretty.
You know, you do need to give The Summer I Turn pretty grace,
though. You know, some things are just
tropes of the teen drama genre. You know, it's not crazy to
think that a teenage couple is going to have a fight at prom,
right? That that's just going to
happen. But it's the specificity of the
way certain scenes unfold that is really like, man, this is a
(41:00):
Dawson's Creek scene that I'm watching Ryan.
Like I saw this 20 years ago, but it's the summer I turn.
Pretty, yes, it is a summer I turn pretty and I could not be
more excited to get this back onour screens on July 16th.
And Cherry, thank you so much for joining to go over the
trailer, recap a little bit and just have a fun television based
discussion and hopefully you'll come back again soon.
