Welcome to the Melodramatic Teen Universe Podcast, the first ever podcast to that weaves together all of your favorite teen dramas from the 90’s and 2000’s! I’m Emily Duke, an attention seeking millennial and comedian, with a self appointed doctorate in everything from Dawson Leery’s infamous tears, to the evolution that every young girl goes through when they realize that Dean sucks and Jess rules. I’m going to be bringing in some new and old friends, comedians, and stars from the universe to discuss the magical world that gave us all our first sexual awakenings, soundtrack for our heartbreaks, and in certain cases, wardrobe inspiration for the PSATS. From Capeside to The O.C., from Stars Hollow to the Hellmouth, I’m so excited to talk to each and every one of you about the Melodramatic Teen Universe.
Producer of the podcast, Eden Sutley, joins Emily for the season 1 finale of the MTU podcast! Emily confronts Eden as the only person in the world who will defend Riley Finn. They dissect the most iconic opening theme songs in the MTU and later debate which season 1 finale best served the show and which ones hold up years later.
Emily chats with comedians Veronica Garza and Otto Fernandez to dissect the problematic, iconic characters: Peyton Sawyer of One Tree Hill and Marissa Cooper from The O.C. They also recall the numerous, puzzling male auctions that occur on One Tree Hill, recoil at the news that Xander and Dawn are dating in the Buffy comic books, and discuss the moments that really lost them on these shows.
Emily talks to television writer (currently for Gossip Girl on HBO Max, nbd) Elaine Loh and comedian Ellen Harrold about two most talked about and hated siblings in the MTU, Dawn Summers and Jenny Humphrey. They have a spirited debate on which sister is the overall worst, who has more annoying rebellious phases and who is a bigger pain in the ass.
Emily invites comedians Katie Novotny and Erin Conroy to the pod for a very special Yale Admissions Panel looking at Blair Waldorf snd Rory Gilmore's super real experiences with the Ivy League school. They also discuss the burning desire to see the inside of people's homes on video calls, preferred methods of being sorted into a Hogwarts House, and inducting Laguna Beach into the MTU.
Emily chats with comedian Myq Kaplan and actor Adam Busch AKA WARREN FROM BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER about the pervasive fragile masculinity on the show. They also passionately discuss the multiple dimensions of Archie Comics, how dope Shawn Hunter from Boy Meets World was, and how most men that are into magic are probably feminists…debatable.
Emily talks with Scaachi Koul (Buzzfeed Culture Writer) about marriage in the MTU. Who has the strongest slash most realistic slash best marriage of all time - The Cohens from The OC or The Taylors from Friday Night Lights? They also discuss why eye shadow is a hard pass, why capitalism is easier to understand than football, and how people in the MTU often have the same name.
Emily talks with journalist Spenser Mestel and Brielle Milano about the portrayal of school shootings in the MTU, specifically on Degrassi and One Tree Hill. They also discuss why blonde men should never be the main course, necessary illegal Limewire downloads of Degrassi, and competing to win MTU bingo.
Emily and comedian Katherine Jessup do a deep dive into the lamest father figures of the MTU - specifically Dawson's dad Mitch Leery & Dan and Jenny's Dad, Rufus Humphrey. They talk about both Mitch & Rufus' parenting tactics, stand up vs. one-man show people and the hypothetical situation of Kurt Cobain writing Christmas albums.
Emily talks with comedians and hosts of the podcast, We Stan Together, Caitlin Bitzegaio and Lauren Brickman about two fan favorites, Brooke Davis and Summer Roberts. They discuss the differences between Brooke & Summer's storylines, the tropes of the brunette best friend and how Brooke and Summer walked so Blair Waldorf could run.
Emily talks with comedians Brittany Brave and Caitlin Reese about the Dawson's Creek infamous detention episode slash ode to The Breakfast Club. They also discuss subgenres of metal music, quarantine dating pods, and the baggy nature of 90's clothes.
Emily talks with comedians Dulce Sloan and Myq Kaplan about the evolution of Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They also discuss Dulce's sixth sense to smell out shows that will soon be cancelled, their thoughts on Bones (Angel's other show), and Bianca Lawson's best accents in the MTU.
Emily chats with comedians Natasha Vaynblat and Jo Firestone about love triangles in the MTU. They dive into the complicated romances of Veronica, Duncan, and Logan on Veronica Mars and Rory, Jess, and Dean on Gilmore Girls. They also dissect how to pronounce Milo Ventimiglia's name, the overall shortness of people on TV, and the brazen, open-shoulder fashion of the new Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.
