Terrell Suggs (00:00):
People forget to
understand that.
You know that we human and wewear multiple hats.
You know what I'm saying.
We're not just, you know, professional athletes, or
football or basketball playersor what have you.
You know what I'm saying, likewe fathers first.

Mick Hunt (00:40):
Ladies and gentlemen,
welcome to another exciting
episode of Mic Unplugged, andtoday we are talking to my GOAT.
You all know I'm a patriot, butyou're going to learn a little
secret.
Today we're talking about fromgridiron to greatness.
This guy is a walking highlightreel.
He is one of the most dominateddefensive forces the game has
ever seen.
He's a Super Bowl champion, adefensive nightmare, defensive
(01:03):
player of the year.
I could give him all theaccolades in the world, but what
I want you to know is he's atrue leader on and off the field
.
Ladies and gentlemen, give itup for my GOAT, mr Terrell.
Sucks Terrell, how you doingtoday, brother.
Terrell Suggs (01:16):
What's up, man?
What's happening?
Thanks for having me.
Mick Hunt (01:18):
Man, I am glad that
you are here.
There's so much I want to talkto you about, man, and I'll make
unplugged.
I like to talk to people abouttheir because, right, that thing
that's deeper than your, whythat true passion that you have?
And I know from time to time itchanges.
So if I were to say today,t-sizzle, what's your because,
man, like, what's that purposethat you have?
Terrell Suggs (01:38):
My children, my
children.
I think now you know I want tobe, you know, even better dad
than I was a football player.
You know what I mean.
It's the most important jobyou'll ever get.
So I would think I know, likemy cuz or my.
Why is my children man?
It's their turn and I get tohave front row seats.
Mick Hunt (02:02):
Yeah, I love that man
and a lot of people don't
understand the sacrifices thatprofessional athletes make when
it does come to parenthood, right, like, when I say
sacrifices, it's you're burningthe candle on both ends, because
you've got to be the teammatefirst and foremost.
Then you've got to do yourassignment on Sunday, right, but
then you know, as tough as youare, you've still got to be dad
(02:27):
at one o'clock in the morningevery once in a while or when
baby is sick, right Like.
People don't understand that.
Talk to them a little bit aboutthat man, just the I don't want
to say the pressures, becausethere's no pressure in
parenthood, but just you got abig, big time job, right.
Terrell Suggs (02:46):
And then you come
home and it's an even bigger
job exactly, and, like you know, people forget to understand
that.
You know that we human and wewear multiple hats.
You know what I'm saying.
We're not just, you know, professional athletes or
football or basketball playersor what have you.
You know I'm saying like wefathers first you know what I
mean and they kind of get theback end.
It gets was left, especiallywhen you plan.
You know what I mean, becauseyour job and everything comes
first, your career, and thenlike they're just kind of like
(03:09):
all right, dad, now you got to,if you could make it to my
recital or my game or something.
You know what I mean.
All that stuff is hard when youplan, but when you're not
playing, it's like it's the bestfeeling in the world, like you
get to go to everything, you getto attend everything and you
kind of get to be present, whereas you know everybody when
you're playing everybody, yeah, you're at your kid's game, but
(03:31):
they're more happy that you'rethere.
You know what I'm saying.
So it's like now they get to bethe focal point.
It's like, nah, it's their game.
If you want their autograph, get theirs.
You know what I'm saying.
It's like I'm just dad now.
You know what I mean.
So I love that it's their turnnow.
It's like they're on stage andthey kind of get to be the
reason.
(03:51):
You know what I mean.
Like everybody's there.
Not everybody there to see dad, everybody there to see you.
You know what I'm saying yes, sir.
Mick Hunt (03:59):
So growing up man,
you grew up in Minnesota, right?
So growing up in Minnesota, when did you know that you were
going to be T-Sizzle?
When did you feel that I?
Terrell Suggs (04:12):
didn't Like.
We talk about it every day andit's like you know, in Minnesota
what people don't know is verycompetitive.
You know what I mean.
Like out of 10 kids, 12 of themgot D1 abilities.
You know what I'm saying.
I remember my Pop Warner team,my eighth grade team.
We went that whole year.
We gave up, I want to say onetouchdown out of 12 games.
(04:35):
We were that dominant on bothsides of the ball.
We kicked the ball off at thebeginning of the game.
We kicked the ball off athalftime because our offense was
just going to light things up,and people don't know this.
But my quarterback was JoeMaurer.
You know what I'm saying, joeMaurer.
Mick Hunt (04:51):
Baseball yeah.
Terrell Suggs (04:52):
You know he went
to Creighton-Darren Hall, was an
All-American, you know, had ascholarship to Florida State but
went and played baseball.
But he was a quarterback on aninner city team.
He was the only white kid.
He was the only white kid andall of us would tell you he was
the best player.
You know what I mean.
Like Joe Power had it Like wewere 10 and he was 8.
(05:13):
He was still better than allthe rest of us and all of us
inner city kids.
You know what I'm saying.
Joe Power just had it from jump.
So he was on our eighth gradeteam.
That was like going up inMinnesota, highly competitive.
So like when I was able to kindof like branch out and I moved
to Arizona, like I already hadkind of like that edge, that
competitive edge.
(05:33):
And that really helped me.
I want to say that propelled me.
You know what I'm saying.
Mick Hunt (05:37):
Yeah, yeah, that's
what's up.
So segueing to Arizona.
Right, you go to Arizona State.
This is pre-NIL, so I ain'tgoing to get you in trouble, but
why Arizona State, man?
Terrell Suggs (05:48):
To be totally
honest with you, it was Florida
State.
I was going to.
Florida State because they werewinning national champions, then
they were on TV every week andthat was huge.
So, you know, as a family, wethought Florida State was the
best place for me.
But my dad was like, all right, you know, I'll be able to catch
(06:08):
a game when I can.
You know we, you know we pouredin the city and I was like,
well, that's a deal breaker forme.
Like I got to have my dad in mygames you know what I'm saying
and like, especially like mywhole senior year, he hadn't
missed one.
And that's when we had ourmagical year, one player of the
year, Gatorade player of theyear.
And you know the thought of megoing to college and my family
(06:28):
not being in the stands to seeit, like they could only see me
when I was on TV or playing onthe West Coast, I was like, nah,
that's not an option.
We might as well go right on 15minutes down the street and
y'all can make every game.
So that's why Arizona State, but also, like Arizona, the U of
A, they was the first everschool to like recruit me, send
(06:50):
me a letter.
And you know, I also, you know, because football don't have the
Olympics I love their colors, like they were the red, white
and blue.
So it was kind of like oh, youcan wear the red, white and blue
and play football.
You know what I mean.
So it was Florida State andthen U of A was like a strong
second, like if I'm not going togo to Florida State, I'll go to
(07:12):
U of A because they were thefirst one.
You know, I'm a loyal dude.
Mick Hunt (07:16):
Yeah.
Terrell Suggs (07:16):
And you know, and
then like the media kind of
heard, like it kind of got outthat I might head to somewhere
other than ASU, and then theyjust went full-fledged, like the
media started recruiting me.
So I was like, yeah, we mightas well just go to ASU.
Mick Hunt (07:36):
I like it, man.
So you know I remember stayingup late because I'm from the
East Coast, I'm from SouthCarolina, right, and I went to
college in North Carolina, tarHeel, always represented by Tar
Heel.
But I remember staying up, man, because you know, for us you
guys are playing at 7, 30, 8o'clock, your time it's like 10,
30, 11.
(07:56):
And when you're on TV, you TV,it gets delayed a little bit.
But I always wanted to see you, man, because the tenacity you
had.
You were all over the field, man.
I showed my kids a highlighttape of yours.
It wasn't even a publishedhighlight tape.
This was back when you couldrecord TV DVR, whatever it was
(08:18):
Watching.
You chase down, running backsfrom the total opposite side of
the field like it was the normfor you because people wasn't
coming to you, right?
You were always having to chaseLike where did that grit, where
did that fire come from, bro?
Terrell Suggs (08:33):
Well, I know
which play you're talking about.
It's UCLA the Deshaun Fosterplays, and like when I was in
high school.
You know my senior year wasDeshaun Foster plays.
And like, when I was in highschool, you know my senior year
was Deshaun Foster's freshmanyear and he toured up.
He like toured up collegefootball, you know what I'm
saying.
And like I was like all right,I was like excited to play him,
(08:55):
but you know you're nervous, you're going up against him,
like you know, that was likethat's how I felt the first time
I played against Ricky Williamsin the league.
Like it's Ricky Williams, butI'm putting up a gig to him.
You know what I'm saying.
They say ball until your idolsbecome your rivals.
So it was Deshaun Foster and itwas just like I'm going to get
him and I was like trying tolike get my play and, and it was
(09:16):
the only time like I couldreally like tackle him.
He ran the other way and helike broke and I tried to catch
him in the ropes.
It was a dope setting but hestill scored.
But it was just kind of like oh, look at this kid, you know
what I mean.
It was kind of like peoplestarted to become aware of me.
But I would definitely say, like my coaches, man, like they
(09:38):
brung the dog out.
You, my coaches, man, like theybrung the dog out.
You know what I mean.
Ted Martino like once I got himas a coach, like my world
changed.
I changed as a player.
You know what I'm saying.
Mick Hunt (09:48):
Yeah, what was that
change like?
Like, give me the before andafter.
Terrell Suggs (09:56):
A coach that kind
of be like look, you know what
I'm saying, you don't just gotto make the plays that come to
you, you can make every play.
You know what I'm saying?
Like we need you to like leadthis team.
And you know he had thatconfidence in me.
You know what I'm saying.
Like that's what coaches do.
They bring the best out of you.
They're on you and like evenwhen I didn't do nothing wrong,
(10:22):
like he would like yell at me,kind of like to get me, like to
let all the other guys know.
Like, all right, I'll get onhis ass too.
You know what I'm saying.
I just kind of like took it,shut my mouth and went to work
and we end up having magicalseasons, man absolutely yeah,
and so then you parlay that.
Mick Hunt (10:35):
You earn a draft pick
, right like I tell people all
the time like players earngetting drafted, right Like
there's there's so many peoplethat are draft eligible.
People don't realize, right, soeven fourth, fifth round draft
picks, they earn to be drafted.
You earn to be drafted by theRavens.
I don't know if a lot of peoplerealize, man like you didn't
(10:58):
start every game your rookieyear but doggone it.
Terrell Suggs (11:01):
You had 12 plus
of those things, though, brother
, I didn't start my rookie yearbecause that that kind of showed
you the personnel we had at theradio.
When I got there, like like youknow I said before, I was like
this was the first time, like Iwasn't top dog.
And not only was I top dog, Iwasn't not top dog, we had a
whole bunch of other dogs therethat could do what I do.
(11:22):
You know what I'm saying.
So it was just kind of like apack of lions and like you, the
young cub, like it was cute whatyou did down there in college.
But this big boy Lee, thisain't that little rascal stuff
you used to.
You know what I mean.
They let me know early likethat was college little bro,
like this is a whole other gameup here.
(11:45):
But I had great vets, man, I hadgreat vets.
You know Adelish Thomas Imentioned him all the time,
adelish Thomas, bart Scott, peter Boulware, anthony Weaver
and of course I had the two topdogs, ray Lewis and Ed Reed.
So you know you got a personnellike that.
Like it's only natural youcould be successful.
You know I ain't going to neverforget Kelly Gregg either.
(12:07):
He was like the smallest guy onour team but he was also like
the strongest and the toughest,so we just had dogs everywhere.
Mick Hunt (12:14):
Yeah, man, and you
were.
You were the dog.
And, again, you've always beenmy favorite NFL player, right,
and so, seeing the maturity ofyou, from your rookie year again
12 and a half sacks to thenyou're starting your next year
and now you're getting schemedand I don't think people realize
that either.
Right, like it's like, okay, suggs is over here, now we're
(12:38):
going to double team him, chiphim, but you're still productive
, right?
Talk to people about that, because, again, I don't think
people understand the nuance.
Like they see the high numbersbut they don't realize those
high numbers mean you're gettingattention too.
Terrell Suggs (12:51):
Yeah, like, what
people don't understand is that,
like you know, offensivecoordinators are smart.
They know what you can do.
You know what I'm saying?
Offensive coordinators aresmart.
Mick Hunt (12:59):
They know what you
can do.
Terrell Suggs (13:00):
You know what I'm
saying.
Like they know what each playercan do and they're going to find
a way to scheme up the defense.
You know what I mean.
It wasn't just me.
Like I said, they were like allright, we can slide this way.
You know, send the, we'lldouble him with the tackle and
tight end and we'll send theguard and the fullback up to Ray
and we'll slide this.
They got schemes.
You know what I'm saying.
(13:22):
You just got to be productive.
Your coordinators kind of gotto counter.
That kind of got to get youloose, get you free.
You know what I'm saying.
But also your personnel, yourteammates, got to get you free
too.
We had it.
So you don't have to pick yourpoison.
You double one of us, the restof us is gonna eat.
So that's how it ended uphappening.
(13:42):
Like everybody know, we've hadlike consecutive years where
we're the best defense infootball.
You know we just didn't have achampionship offense is why we
ended up either getting bouncedout of the playoffs or didn't
make it.
You know what I'm saying.
But you know we eventually gotthat thing done.
So yeah.
Mick Hunt (13:59):
So let's talk about
that man like not only two times
super bowl, right, but thenyou're also player of the year,
you're the leader of men at thatpoint, right.
So talk to me about yourleadership maturity.
Like, when did you realize?
All right, I gotta be a littlebit different in the locker room
, I gotta be a little more vocalon the field, because you had
(14:20):
Ray, you had Ed on the back endand then, like, you're that
presence up front man.
So like, how did how did Sizzlemanage that?
All right, I'm a leader now.
Terrell Suggs (14:30):
I want to say it
was after the 2006 season.
We lost in the playoffs at hometo, you know, Peyton Manning
and them, and that's not a goodfeeling because we felt like we
were top dog that year.
You know, I'm saying we feltlike that was our year and no
six.
I was like it was the mostgames we had ever won as a
franchise, up until you know,Lamar got there.
(14:51):
But we had won.
We had went 13 and three.
Like I had never won that manygames before in my life and it
was just like and I think we hadlike nine pro bowlers I think
six of us were on defense orsomething like that Our whole
linebacker corps went to the probowl.
Myself, Ray Bart and AdeliusThomas all went to the pro bowl
(15:14):
that year.
So we had Trevor Price.
He like led all defensivetackles and sacks.
He had 13.
It was just a great year.
It was a really good year.
We got bounced out and it wasjust kind of like we kind of all
expected Ray and Ed to kind ofjust lead us.
(15:37):
You know what I'm saying.
I was like all right, I got tojoin that group.
We all need help so we all canget it done together.
So I would say probably after2006,.
And I became more of a leaderin 2008 when Harbs got there.
Then we had that real bigthree-headed monster.
Mick Hunt (15:53):
So you know, me, ray
and Ed.
So yeah, yeah, no, that'sawesome, dude, that's awesome.
So I'm going to say this, soyou don't have to.
I wholeheartedly believe if theRavens, during your heyday, had
somewhat of an explosiveoffense, you would be the career
leader in sacks.
I would say that, yeah, Becauseliterally a lot of your sacks
(16:18):
man teams didn't have to.
They were never pressured tothrow the ball One, they
couldn't throw the ball on youguys.
But like there were nevershootout games and what people
don't realize, stats on sacks.
Like it's a lot of shootouts,right.
Like I wholeheartedly believeyou'd had over 200 sacks If
y'all had a potent we could have.
Terrell Suggs (16:36):
we could have
landed somewhere around there.
Like I, you know, I don't wantto gas myself up and be like, oh
, I'd have let you know, I'dhave been I'll do it for you.
Mick Hunt (16:45):
I'll do it for you,
don't worry, I got you.
Terrell Suggs (16:48):
But you know a
lot of those early years, like
we did not have an offense, likepeople know that, like there's
not no secret, we did not havean offense.
And like when you're inshootout games and special not
shootout games, excuse me you inlike dogfighting games and
you're playing Pittsburgh, theyin you you know what I'm saying
they got three tight ends andthey running powers and plunges.
(17:10):
It ain't like the game is now.
You know high-flying andpassing and all of that.
Mick Hunt (17:16):
You had Eddie George
to prep for the Titans ain't
throwing the ball, ray.
Terrell Suggs (17:21):
Taylor Corey
Dillon, you know what I'm saying
.
Jerome Bettis like we had bigbacks.
Then you know what I'm saying,Brandon Jacobs.
You know what I'm saying.
Steven Jackson, like this iswhen backs were backs.
Every week you're facing eithera big back or a good, elusive
one.
You know what I mean.
You know a shifty one and likenow it's kind of like the
(17:46):
running back is kind of like anafterthought.
You know what I mean.
They don't really value runningbacks, no more.
But I think Saquon Barkley justchanged that.
Mick Hunt (17:54):
Hoping so, Hoping so
man.
Is there any sack aside from myguy Tom Brady?
Any sack you remember, like anysack that stands out or a few
sacks that stand out.
Terrell Suggs (18:06):
One sack stand
out.
It was opening day, of course, against the Steelers.
They had just knocked us out.
They had just knocked us out ofthe playoffs the year before
and we were beating them Ontheir home field.
We was up like twenty one, seven or something in the third
and then they end up coming backand beating us.
(18:26):
But I was just, I was just likewe were turned up.
We just got knocked out by.
We felt disappointed and thatthat opening day, 2011, like I
just I was on one that day, soit was one I just come through
like hello to you.
I like rap under Loli.
(18:47):
He told me to do it Like Iwasn't supposed to.
He was like Sizzle, come underme.
Like we just had that kind ofchemistry, that connection, yeah
, and I was like all right, andI just did it and it just
happened Like boom, big hit, ball out, we recover, we go down
, score like the next play ortwo plays or something like that
, and it kind of like set thetone for our season.
(19:08):
That opener and that sack.
You know what I mean?
It was a.
That one is my most memorable.
Mick Hunt (19:14):
I love it, man so one
of the things I love
paralleling is leadership.
In sports, and again, I'll sayit all day, every day, my
favorite player in the world wasT-Sizzle, but I also
appreciated, like I said earlier, your leadership, and so talk
to the audience about leadershipand teamwork, right?
(19:36):
Because one of the things thatI always say, a great leader
knows their team better thantheir team knows themselves.
Meaning, you knew Halotiprobably better than Haloti knew
himself, right, like you knew, you know his instincts.
You probably knew the buttonsto push.
How important was that for youbeing a leader?
But knowing your teammate andtheir strengths.
Terrell Suggs (19:58):
It was extremely
important, especially because I
kind of like fell into the roleyou know what I'm saying.
I didn't, like you know, appoint myself as a leader and
then, like that, I think it waskind of like the respect from
the you know my other teammatesthat I had in the locker room
that we can kind of go to SIS tokind of lead us.
You know what I'm saying.
But also, like I can never notdiscredit, like our kind of
(20:22):
legacy, like I was a good leaderbecause I had a good leader,
you know, in ray and ed.
You know what I'm saying.
Like when you know you haveguys, that's always professional
, that's showing you how to doit right.
You know I mean, and like notonly that, like they love the,
the ravens organization, theylove our team, you know what I'm
(20:42):
saying.
Like if ray, you know, didn'tget older you know what I'm
saying he'd probably still beplaying.
You know what I'm saying.
Like if Ray, you know, didn'tget older you know what I'm
saying He'd probably still beplaying.
You know what I mean In theRavens uniform, you know what.
Mick Hunt (20:50):
I'm saying Right.
Terrell Suggs (20:51):
Like I kind of
had I was under his tutelage you
know what I'm saying.
Like I was under him.
I sat next to him for like 10years in the back of the room
just picking his brain.
Like I didn't get, like you'renot gonna get a better football,
mind.
You know what I'm saying.
So, uh, I kind of say all ofthat just rubbed right off to
his little brother, you know.
I mean like after being, youknow being under, you know being
(21:14):
him being my mentor for allthose years, and then me just
kind of having a relationshipwith other guys in the locker
room and us having fun and likethat.
That is how, you know, I fellinto the role and like I was
just one of those guys that alsoloved the ravens organization,
you know what I'm saying.
So it was like a lot was ridingon, like these games, like,
(21:37):
though, we love these games andwe only got limited time
together, so let's get this shitdone.
You know what I'm saying.
Saying Excuse me- but you knowwhat I mean and that was just
kind of the mindset.
You know what I mean?
Ravens nation.
Mick Hunt (21:50):
Yeah, yeah, I think
another thing that I think you
embody and you talked about itwith your kids again, doing the
parallel to leadership is great.
Leaders are always present, right Like you can't lead by
talking, you can't lead bychecking in, and I don't care if
you're talking, leadership infootball, leadership in your
(22:11):
household I think presence iskey and I would say that for you
, like seeing the things you'vebeen able to accomplish on and
off the field, you're alwayspresent, like you're always in
the moment.
Terrell Suggs (22:22):
Yeah, you know
you gotta be.
You know what I mean you to be.
Like you said, I let my kidsknow there's nothing more
important than what you're doing.
Now.
You know what I'm saying.
And also, like you know, aleader would never ask someone
to do that he wouldn't dohimself.
You know what I'm saying.
So you always kind of got tolead by your actions first.
You know what I mean.
It's always being on time, likenot like I tell my son, like if
(22:47):
you're supposed to be somewhereat eight, then you need to be
there by like 7.50, 7.55.
You don't want to be walking inat eight.
You know what I mean.
Like you want to have somerespect for your time.
You don't want to always berushing.
You know what I'm saying.
And always lead by example.
You know what I'm saying.
So I mean lead with youractions, always be a
professional, always be a man ofyour word.
(23:08):
You know what I mean and that'swhat I was pretty much trying
to be.
Mick Hunt (23:12):
I love that man.
I love that If you could givepeople like one tip so let's say
, you know someone's eitherstruggling with leadership or
someone's trying to find thatpurpose within Like what's one
tip you'd give them.
Terrell Suggs (23:25):
Always self-check
, always start with yourself.
You know what I'm saying, because it's always something
you could do.
You know what I mean.
You can't complain aboutsomething.
You can't ask for sympathy fora burden that you chose to bear.
You know what I'm saying.
So it's always, you know,self-check.
Always start with you firstbefore you go anywhere else.
(23:46):
It's like all right, what can Ido?
Like, what can I do to changethis?
What did I do to cause this?
Like it's always self-check,self-check yourself first and
then, like you can come up, youknow, with the right move.
Like I tell you know, my kids,my cousins, everybody all the
time.
It's like my cousins, everybodyall the time.
It's like you got to play chess, you got to think moves ahead.
(24:08):
You know what I mean.
There's always a move to bemade.
You know what I'm saying.
Just take your time and make it.
You know what I mean.
Think about it and make thechess move.

for my teammates, my team and mycity.

that.

up beside you, you were getting
it all.
If he was in the huddle, noquestions asked, you getting
everything.

that.
