Hello, hello and
welcome everyone to episode

I'm your co-host, jeremy Wolfe, and I'm joined by your host,
martha Savloff.
Martha, good to see you again.
Martha (00:27):
Good to see you, yeah
it's always a pleasure.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
So what I think we're
going to do today, you
mentioned you wanted to talk alittle bit about a topic that I
personally know nothing of, soI'm interested to learn more.
So what is PCOS and how does itaffect women's health,
particularly in terms of weight?
Martha (00:51):
Yeah, for sure, I'm
ready to dive into this.
First of all, jeremy, thereason why I want to talk about
this is because I want to shareor send out the message out
there to women that have PCOSthat there's hope for them.
We see so many women here atInspire with PCOS and they've
(01:12):
been diagnosed with it andthey're super frustrated because
with PCOS weight gain.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
Hold on, sorry to cut
you off First off.
What is PCOS?
Martha (01:22):
for those that don't
know, Sure, pcos is Polycystic
Overy Syndrome, yeah, sobasically it's a hormonal
disorder, and it affects a lotof women, especially in the
reproductive years of in theirlife.
So we have 30-year-olds thatget diagnosed with this, and
(01:46):
then what happens is theyexperience this weight gain that
they haven't experienced before, and they try to do everything.
They know what to do and how toget themselves in a place where
they can lose weight.
And also what happens is thatmany times they're told that
they cannot get pregnant, and soit's a really, really sad topic
(02:12):
a little bit for women.
They don't know what to do, andso we help them and we bring
hope to them.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
So that's why.
Martha (02:20):
I want to talk about it.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
Is now is PCOS.
Is this a genetic condition orhow does one come about getting
PCOS?
Martha (02:30):
It doesn't necessarily
have to be so.
It can be just a diagnosis thatcomes about for the female and
what happens is it just disruptstheir whole hormonal process,
and so it's kind of like acompounded issue that women face
(02:54):
, because it just disrupts allsorts of different mechanisms in
their body.
So it's something that theyhave to figure out with this new
life, with this new diagnosis.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
What are some
effective weight loss strategies
for those that have PCOS?
Martha (03:16):
Yeah, and before I get
into that, I want to share with
everybody that's listening orwatching why, like?
Why does this happen to theirbody as far as like?
Why does their body gain weightwhen they're diagnosed with
PCOS?
And obviously we all know thathormones and our weight go hand
in hand, right, everything'sunder the sun is hormones,
(03:37):
hormones, hormones, hormones.
So there's like a top fourreasons why women that are
diagnosed with PCOS gain weight, and the reason why number one
is insulin resistance.
You know they suffer from that, and when you're insulin
resistant, then all what happensis your body just stores fat,
(03:59):
so there's an increase of fatstorage in your body and that's
the reason why they gain weight.
Also, the hormone imbalancedefinitely does that as well,
and then it disrupts theirmetabolism.
So when the metabolism ismessed with and decreases, then
(04:20):
at that point you're gainingweight.
Right, you're storing away fat,and then also, pcos tends to
increase a person's appetite, sopeople tend to eat more.
So neither eating more andthey're not burning, because
their metabolism is disruptedand their hormones are out of
(04:43):
whack and there's there'sinsulin resistance, and all of
that together equals weight gain.
But with all of that, jeremy, there's hope.
We, like I mentioned earlier,we see dozens and dozens of
women that come here thatthey've experienced this weight
(05:03):
gain right Because of the PCOS,and so there is hope, and I want
to give the people that arelistening a couple of tips on
what they can do to help themwith that.
So, number one everything isabout diet, right.
Everything is about your foodintake, so you want to make sure
you have a balanced diet.
Number two portion control.
We just recorded that lastepisode, so portion control is a
(05:27):
big thing too for PCOS.
Regular exercise Exercise isalways key, is always part of a
healthy lifestyle.
Stress management thosecortisol levels also disrupt the
hormones and metabolism, and soyou want to make sure you're
managing your stress, so thenyou're not making things worse,
(05:48):
right.
And then, lastly, support,support, support.
Like I mentioned earlier, womentry to figure out what the heck
to do when they're diagnosedwith this and over a sudden,
they're so used to being a sizefive and they're making their
way to a size eight, 10, 12, andthey try everything under the
(06:10):
sun and they don't know what todo.
And so find the right supportand the right program to help
them push through.
Because I tell you, jeremy, there is hope.
Our women lose weight.
They lose half a pound to apound a day average, even with
PCOS.
They just need the rightguidance and the right program
to do it.
(06:30):
So there is hope, and atInspire we deal with the
metabolism, which is one of thefirst things that we have to do
with our PCOS clients.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
Yeah, absolutely.
It's just so important to havea proper support system in place
.
I mean, life can be sochallenging, and when you're
trying to do these things alonewithout a system in place, it
can be tough to stay on course, and it's just so important to
have that good diet, have thatexercise, as we always talk
about for preventive measures, and just a little good,
(07:03):
wholesome life and something I'mlearning more and more on the
other side of 40, how importantit is.
I recently started runningmyself.
I'm more cognizant of the diet.
One of the things that'sdifficult in our society, though
, is you might think you'reeating decent food, but
everything has hormones andartificial and pesticides and
all this stuff.
So it's very, very difficult tofind good foods, especially
(07:28):
when in our fast-paced society, when we're constantly on the
move.
So all good stuff, martha, always a pleasure.
Thanks for your insights.
Martha (07:37):
Yeah there's hope guys.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
Yeah, all right.
Well, we'll catch everyone onthe next episode.
So you want to have a lovelyday and take care.
Bye-bye.
