Welcome to the Mind Sensei Podcast im your host, Peter Tas and I’m excited to bring you another captivating episode of *The Mind Sensei Podcast*.

Today, we are joined by a remarkable martial artist whose journey through American Kenpo Karate is rich with experience, accomplishments, and contributions to the art—Mr. Wes Idol.

Mr. Idol began his Kenpo journey in 1986 under the guidance of Albert Cornejo, building the foundation for a lifelong dedication to the art. In 1987, he took a pivotal step by training at Senior Grandmaster Edmund K. Parker’s West LA studio.

This opportunity placed Mr. Idol at the heart of Kenpo’s development and exposed him to the legacy of Kenpo’s founder.

Over the years, Mr. Idol expanded his knowledge by training with legendary figures such as Larry Tatum and Frank Trejo. His transition to Bryan Hawkins as his primary instructor in 1992 marked a significant milestone, further refining his craft and understanding of the art.

Outside the dojo, Mr. Idol’s skills have been put to use in extraordinary ways. In 1996, he served as a bodyguard for the Dalai Lama, demonstrating his discipline and ability to apply martial principles in high-stakes situations.

In 2002, he collaborated with Tony Horton to develop the Kenpo DVD for the P90X fitness program, introducing the art to millions worldwide.

Adding to his legacy, in 2009, Mr. Idol authored a verified history of American Kenpo, providing invaluable insights into its development, particularly in Europe.

This episode is so full of insights and stories that we’re bringing it to you in two parts. Today, we’ll dive into the beginnings of Mr. Idol’s journey, his experiences with some of Kenpo’s most iconic figures, and his transition into broader roles within and beyond the martial arts community.
