Ever look back and realize you’ve been on a completely transformative journey—without even noticing it in the moment? That’s exactly what happened to me when I looked at the calendar and saw the date: May 9, 2023. Two years to the day since I launched this podcast. (Totally unplanned. Total goosebumps.)

To celebrate this anniversary, I’m taking you behind the scenes of the pivot that changed everything—from a podcast that tried to be “clever” to one that’s truly clear. I’m sharing how I went from “OMG Teach Me” (yes, based on my love of saying oh-my-goodness) to Mind Your Midlife, and why that shift—fueled by you and your real-life midlife questions—was the turning point.

In this episode, I open up about:

  • The biggest mistake I made when I first launched
  • Why trying to speak to everyone meant I was connecting with no one
  • The moment I realized I was serving myself more than my audience
  • How clarity, not cleverness, became my guiding star
  • And how you helped shape this podcast into what it is today

Whether you're building a business, starting a passion project, or simply navigating a new season of life, the lesson is the same: when you stop trying to sound smart and start getting specific about who you're really here to help, everything shifts.

Have you had a moment like this in your own journey? I’d love to hear about it! Find me on Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook @CherylPFischer—or visit cherylpfischer.com and say hello.

And hey, if this episode resonated with you, sharing it with a friend is the biggest compliment you can give. 💛

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Oh, my goodness.
Hello, my friend.
Thank you for listening to thisbonus episode.
It is right now, friday, may9th 2025.
I took a look back at thecalendar and realized that this
podcast calendar and realizedthat this podcast, in its
original form, launched onTuesday, may 9th 2023.

(00:32):
So I'm taking it as just aflipping cool sign that, now
that I release on Fridays, whenI used to release on Tuesdays it
is exactly the day that anepisode is coming out, and so
here's your bonus.
I want to share with you what Irealized in these two years of
podcasting, and whether you're apodcaster or you are, as we all

(00:58):
are, a midlife woman justtrying to figure it out.
I believe this is going to makea difference for you, and I
would love for you to tell me,after you listen, what you think
of this.
So find me on social.
I'm on Instagram, I'm on TikTok.
I'm on Facebook Cheryl P Fisher, come find me.
So two years exactly ofpodcasting.

(01:20):
When I started in case youweren't around back then the
podcast was called OMG, teach Me, and you can still find those
episodes.
They are absolutely still there.
Go find Mind your Midlife andjust keep scrolling down on your
podcast app and you will findthose too.
It was about a year and a halfas OMG Teach Me, and the idea

(01:41):
behind that is part of thelesson that I want to share with
you that I learned.
The idea behind that was acatchy name.
I love the rhyme of it, thefact that I say, oh my goodness,
all the time, just in life, youcan ask people in my life.
I'm constantly saying, oh mygoodness.
I like to think of it as beingpleasantly surprised all the

(02:02):
time in life.
Maybe I'm just confused, Idon't know, but I'm constantly
saying it.
So I just thought it was such acatchy name and I wanted to
share on that podcast powerfullessons that make such a
difference in our lives that wenever learn in school.

(02:22):
And the idea of that came fromthe fact that I used to be a
high school teacher.
I in fact taught high schoolfor 12 years math and economics
and the fact that I am now acoach, I'm a trainer, I love to
teach, I love to speak.
So in my head it all made sense.
I knew I had some powerfulthings to share and I brought on

(02:43):
so many guests If you were aguest, thank you.
So many guests over that yearand a half period of time or a
little bit more than a year anda half, really that made such an
impact on listeners.
I know that that was the caseand I love doing it, and I still
love doing it, and here's whatI learned.
However, as the podcast morphedinto Mind your Midlife, I

(03:07):
learned that I can stand on themetaphorical street corner which
is my office in my house, infront of the mic and I can tell
you powerful things all day, every day.
But if you don't understandthings all day, every day, but

(03:27):
if you don't understand how it'sgoing to help you and you, in
fact, don't even reallyunderstand what I'm going to be
talking about then it's justnoise, and the last thing that
all of us need right now, in2025, is more noise.
So changing my perspective onhow to reach people with

(03:48):
something powerful led tochanging a ton about the podcast
, and changing the name was thefirst thing.
So I find that when we start abusiness because it's definitely
happened to me when I started abusiness or we start a podcast,
or we start a speaking career,we start social media, something

(04:09):
Many of us you may or may notagree for yourself, but many of
us have a hard time sayingexactly who we're speaking to,
and this was me.
I was sharing powerful lessonswe haven't learned in school for
anyone, probably mostly women.

(04:30):
But could a 20-year-old benefit?
Sure.
Could a 70-year-old benefit,sure.
Could a 40-year-old benefit,sure.
Who am I to say they wouldn'tbenefit from this powerful
lesson that I'm sharing or myguest is sharing?
And I know you understand whatI mean, because we, if we are

(04:52):
trying to do something that isour passion, that we're doing as
an impact, we don't want toleave anyone out.
We don't want to not allowsomeone to take advantage of
whatever it is that we know canbe amazing for them.
But if we're not clear on whowe're talking to, what we're

(05:14):
providing and how they willbenefit, nobody's going to know.
And I had listeners to thepodcast for sure, but the
numbers were only growing slowly, tiny bit.
Now, if you have been listeningfrom the beginning, I'm sending
you huge love because I knowthat my listeners have hung in

(05:36):
there with me through all ofthis and have given such helpful
and powerful feedback, and I dolove you for that much helpful
and powerful feedback, and I dolove you for that.
And at the same time, I knew inmy just heart that some of the
things we were talking about inthese episodes could have a
bigger impact on more people inthis world.

(05:58):
So, if you have a confusingname, I wish I had a dollar for
every time someone said to me oh, is that for teachers?
Omg, teach me.
And even the graphic my ideaoriginally had a chalkboard
background because I thought itwas cute.
Or people would say, oh, isthat to help people do better in

(06:20):
school?
You used to be a teacher, right?
Are you helping students?
It was just such.
It was such a difficult thingto explain.
So we're hit with so muchinformation nowadays from social
media, from our work, frombeing out in the world, from
being online 24 hour.
News is just oh, 200.

(06:41):
Well, it's probably more than200, 500 channels, I don't know
how many.
We have 27 different streamingservices.
It's too much.
And so anything that isconfusing your intended audience
is going to say no.
Confused minds say no.
You might also have heard it.
Confused minds take no action.

(07:03):
And same for me.
If I don't understand the offerthat someone is presenting me
with, I'm not going to doanything Now.
I might also not do anything ifI don't need it right now or
whatever.
So it's not only this reasonthat maybe some things need to
be tweaked a little bit, butthis is a big thing, and this
was my thing.
This was my learning.

(07:24):
I had to do a couple things, andthank you to Courtney Elmer for
coaching me through this, aswell as Catherine Beck for
coaching me through this.
As well as Catherine Beck mytwo amazing podcast coaches I
had to figure out.
Who am I actually talking to?

(07:46):
Who can I help?
What do I want to help themwith?
And it's more than people intheir 40s and 50s who are women.
What are their concerns?
What are your concerns as youlisten to this?
What are your struggles?
What do you not want to hear?
I don't think you want to hearfrom me that you have to add 10
new habits to your day.
I don't think you want to hearthat and I think it stresses you

(08:06):
out.
So I needed to think throughall of that and figure out what
am I actually saying and how cansomebody just be scrolling
through their podcast app andsee this and think, oh yeah,
maybe that could help me.
Let me have a listen.
That is the biggest lesson thatI learned in two years of

(08:26):
podcasting.
It's about you you, it's notabout me and I thank you for
listening.
I thank you for reading andreviewing, I thank you for

(08:48):
sharing, and whatever podcastyou listen to, no matter how big
or small their audience is, letme tell you what.
The number one compliment youcan give and the number one way
you can help them grow is toshare an episode you loved with
your friends, with your socialmedia followers, with whoever.
If you loved something, shareit.
That's maybe there's a lifelesson Lesson number two if you

(09:09):
loved, something, share it.
So I just want to say I'm sothankful that this whole
experience forced me to figureout who you are, that I'm trying
to talk to so that I can make abigger impact for you, and I
hope that's what we're doinghere at Mind your Midlife.
I can't wait to continue beingin your ear for two or four or

(09:33):
six or however many more years.
Thank you for listening.
