Welcome to the podcast.
So when I had my office, I saw alot of kids and they were so
easy to work with.
Honestly, it was the parentsthat were the worst.

(01:26):
I digress anyway.
Parents can be difficult, butwhen it came to building up
their confidence, kids were easybecause they were playful and
you could pull in imagery thatallowed them to be confident.
You can do this in manydifferent ways and I work with a

(01:49):
lot of women who don't feelconfident and it's a little bit
harder because what is behindall that are all these internal
beliefs and these dialogue, thisdialogue that keeps going on
and on and you kind of have toknock that back.
But kids don't have that.
You know they can, they canfeel it and express it and you

(02:10):
can build it up really easy.
You know some kids of courseyou can't, but most you can.
Now I like to think ofconfidence as a way of building
up the ability to be more sureof yourself.
Now, when I would work withthese kids, I would ask them
what is confidence to you?
And they would be like it'sbeing brave.

(02:30):
And when you ask adult, they'llgo.
They're kind of like pause fora little bit because there's not
a lot of words that representconfidence.
I think it's an accumulation ofa lot of words, you know being
self-assured, being strong, being in control, and if you

(02:53):
want to learn about control, listen to my hypnosis and
control episode.
I'll link that in the shownotes.
But how do you become more sureof yourself when in the back of
your head, you're tellingyourself you're not.
Well, how do you build upanything?
If you're a bodybuilder, yougain muscle strength by

(03:15):
repetition.
If you're a contractor, youlearn how to be a contractor by
building house after house afterhouse.
So there's a repetitioncomponent.
When it comes to confidence, confidence is something that
develops as a young kid, but asan adult you can learn to become

(03:39):
confident.
You can teach yourself.
I like to use the analogy andI've done this with my clients.
Confidence is like putting on ajacket and you have to first
off know.
You know, do you like thejacket?
What does this jacket look like?
How does this jacket feel?

(04:02):
And I like to tell people towear their confidence, bring it
in, feel that jacket, you know, and if you can just play with me
for a minute and just imaginethat you have a confidence
jacket and you're gonna put iton, everybody is different and
one person's jacket could beleather, somebody else just

(04:24):
could be a nice sweater that'scomfortable.
Maybe somebody's jacket is morelike armor, or maybe it's
something fun.
Whatever you feel representsconfidence to you is what you
wear and you just use yourimagination and then, when you

(04:46):
put that jacket on and you kindof match what that jacket feels
like to how you wanna feelinside, you let it build up and
you let it become an expressionof yourself, as if it's an
imaginary jacket and you'rewearing it and then, as you let
it build up and you build up,and the one thing you need to do
is you need to wear theconfidence as well.
You need to stand up taller, you know, put your head up and

(05:12):
if you really wanna have fun,you stand your ass up and you
get into the confident Supermanpose.
We all know what that is.
That's the pose where you'restanding up and your hands on
your hips.
You just allow that energy tosink in and just to move around
you in every space and place inyour body and you'll feel

(05:32):
yourself beginning to feelconfident.
And one of the reasons I like toplay when it, you know, when it
comes to being in confidence,is people just take it too
seriously.
You know I have to be confidentfor that meeting.
One of the best ways to do thatis to have fun and to go into
whatever you're doing with asense of curiosity.
And this is why kids work sowell because they're curious and

(05:55):
they play.
And when you play, you increaseall these wonderful chemicals
in your body and you're kind ofplaying that, you're confident.
And when, even if you're fakingit too, you make it, you're
still bringing that energy inand you can become confident.
It's no different than they saywhen you wanna be happy, you
have to smile.
Your brain believes what you doand if you do it it's going to

(06:17):
believe it.
Just a side note you know, whensomebody asks me, you know what
the definition of confidence is,I like to think of Sogoni
Weaver, the movie Aliens.
When Ripley is in the elevatorand she is going down to go get
Newt and she's riding thatelevator, and as she's in that

(06:39):
elevator she is getting herequipment together, she's
putting their jacket on and bythe time she gets to the bottom
floor she is standing there withthat weapon in her hand, ready
to go fight.
And the thing about that imageis she is confident as hell.
But you know she's alsoterrified.
There may still be some fear, and that is okay.

(07:01):
The confidence is what helpsyou to push through the fear.
So even the most confidentpeople can still be nervous,
they can still be worried, butthey push through because they
allow the confidence to bebigger than what they're
fighting Now, a lot of the womenI work with.

(07:24):
I'll ask them to tell me whenwas the last time they had a
confidence issue.
And they'll usually tell me atime.
And then I'll ask them when thelast time they felt confident.
And you know what?
It's usually the exact same day.
And why is that?
Because it's an emotion andwe're emotional people and we
are in a state of flux, andyou'll be confident one minute

(07:45):
and not so confident the next.
Happy one minute and not sohappy the next, and depending on
where you are, is what you feel.
And it is okay to allow for theflow because, really, what
confidence is?
It is just knowing that you cando what you put your mind to,

(08:06):
even if it may be difficult.
All right, well, you go out withyour bad self, get that jacket
on and get into that Supermanpose and don't take things so
seriously, and you'll find, ifyou do that, then you will
accomplish what you need to do.
It'll be there for you.
All right, I will see you onthe next episode.
Take a big, deep breath in andexhale.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
