Spiwe Jefferson (00:04):
Welcome to Mindful in 5, where busy
professionals find your peacefuloasis to thrive in complex work
environments.
I am Spiwa Jefferson attorney, certified mindfulness
practitioner and author of theMindful in 5 book series.

(00:24):
Here to guide you to a clearer, softer and more supported life.
Join me and your fellow MindfulNinjas as we explore
science-backed mindfulnessstrategies for successful
leaders that you can implement, starting with just five minutes

(00:46):
a day.
Elevate your work, empower yourlife, work higher, live
stronger.
Let's go.
Happy New Year.
Happy New Year.

(01:11):
I am not a New Year resolutionsfan, so this is not my way of
suggesting you should make them, but if you do, today we're
going to talk about a commonchallenge that many of us face
as we set new goals andresolutions for the new year,
feeling overwhelmed by theprospect of keeping these habits

(01:33):
for an entire year.
It's easy to get caught up inthe idea that we need to be
perfect and make sweepingchanges all at once, but the
truth is that lasting changetakes time, effort and, above
all else, consistency.
So the insight I'd like you totry on for this week is called

(01:58):
Just Today, Repeat aloud afterme, Go on, Nobody's listening.
Just today, I'll give you anexample.
Those of you who know me knowthat I have been going to the
gym at the crack of dawn fordecades.
I never set out to go to thegym for 20 years.

(02:19):
Who would?
I would have never done it ifthat was my target.
But at the beginning of everyyear I recommit to continuing to
go to the gym, but not even forthe entire year, For just today
.
So even when I don't feel anyenthusiasm for going, I think,

(02:40):
well, I guess I can manage avisit just today.
Try that.
And before you know it, a fewdays, a few weeks, a few decades
of just todays have gone by andyou see or feel the results.
Do I make it to the gym everysingle day?

(03:03):
No, I don't, but I'm okay withthat.
There are sometimes days oreven months that go by where I
don't go, but I don't beatmyself up over it because I know
that as long as there's breathin my body, I can take another
shot just today.
So take a softer approach toyour goals.

(03:26):
Remember that mindfulness is allabout being present in the
moment without judgment, and weare often our own worst judges,
aren't we?
It's okay to move at your ownpace Instead of being hard on
yourself and striving forperfection.
Give yourself grace.
Allow yourself to feel a senseof guilt-free peace and clarity

(03:52):
in every moment.
Make space for freedom, formistakes and growth when things
don't go as planned.
So if, for example, you aredetermined to establish a better
mindfulness meditation practicethis year, even if all you do
is start with just two to fiveminutes, consistency is much

(04:12):
more important than getting itexactly right for one hour one
time.
In my opinion, the journey ismore important than the
destination, because it is alongthe way that you pick up
important qualities like clarity, focus, discipline, resilience

(04:35):
and the ability to pick yourselfup and keep coming back to your
goal for just today.
So, as you move forward withyour new habits, try to stay
present and focused on.
Say it with me just today.
It's even applicable when lifegets hard, when you're trying to

(04:59):
kick a bad habit or overcomeheartbreak or deal with a
difficult situation.
You don't have to survive allyear, but just today.
Sometimes it's enough to getthrough just this moment.
So this week, when you set outto do something new, don't worry

(05:21):
about the long road ahead.
Focus on doing it just today,Until next time.
This is Spiwe Jefferson sayingbe mindful and be well, even if
it's just today.
