This week on "Mindset and Money Mastery for Photographers," we dive into the game-changing practice of selecting a "word of the year" to transform your weakest skill into a newfound strength. Drawing from my personal experiences, I unravel how external influences led me to dread writing and running. Discover how identifying and mastering these dreaded areas can turn your weaknesses into strengths and even spark unexpected enjoyment.

Imagine dedicating an entire year to one word that guides both your personal and professional growth. In this episode, I share how words like writing, marketing, and balance have shaped past years, and reveal the struggle in choosing this year's word until my husband's choice of "intention" inspired me. I provide practical advice on keeping your word top of mind with visual reminders and resources, and I encourage you to share your own word with me on Instagram.

We also highlight the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and consistent self-check-ins to fuel your growth journey. Speaker 2 (00:23):
Hello everyone.
Today I wanted to share withyou something that I've been
doing for a while at thebeginning of the year, and that
is choosing a word of the year.
A long time ago, I don't knowif I read a book or I heard
someone say this, but I'm notreally exactly sure where this
came from, to be honest.
But I remember learningsomething about taking your

(00:45):
weakest skill and mastering it,and we actually talk about this
in our book a little bit theUnicorn.
So if you haven't grabbed yourcopy, make sure you head over to
the link in the bio and grabyour copy of our book.
They are going to be shippingout in February, so make sure
you grab your copy there.
So I remember learning thisidea of taking the thing that
you believe is your weakestskill or you are terrible at,

(01:07):
and really just deciding tomaster it.
Because the thing is thatoftentimes the reason that we
don't like doing something orthe reason we dread something or
hate an activity is not becausewe're bad at it.
It's simply because we don'tunderstand it.
So if you listen to my episodeabout the book, the story behind

(01:27):
my book and where it came from, you will have heard me say that
I used to believe that I was aterrible writer and that I was
awful at writing.
And my English teacher in highschool is I'm going to just
blame it on her for funpartially to blame, probably not
completely to blame but Iremember her telling me that I
was a bad writer and when shesaid that, I just decided I'm a

(01:51):
bad writer, that's all I everwill be, and I just kind of
accepted that as my fate.
And the reason that I was not agreat writer was because I
didn't really understand how towrite.
No one had ever really taughtme like yeah, I learned in
school, but that's not reallythe same right, I wasn't good at
it because I didn't understandit.

(02:11):
Therefore, I hated the act ofwriting.
Okay, the same thing happenedto me when I was growing up from
my parents.
I remember when I was reallyyoung hearing somebody in my
family say I remember when I wasreally young hearing somebody
in my family say we're just notrunners in our family.

(02:33):
No one in our family can run,we weren't built to run.
And I remember going intovolleyball in junior high and my
sisters had played volleyball.
So I was going to playvolleyball because that's what
we did in our family, and Iremember having to run the mile.
And whenever I went to run themile, I was already set up to
fail, because I had been told bymy family at some point in time

(02:55):
growing up that I was bad atrunning, that we were not
runners in our family, that wecouldn't run.
And I believed it.
I believed that I was not agood runner and that I couldn't
run.
And I believed it.
I believed that I was not agood runner and that I couldn't
run.
So I would go out on that trackevery Friday when we had to run
our mile and I would dread it.
Every being of my fiber wasprepared to fail before I even

(03:19):
started.
And you see, the thing was thatwe had to run the mile every
Friday until we could run itunderneath a certain amount of
time.
And I decided, long before Ieven ran my first mile, that I
couldn't run a mile.
I decided that I would never befast enough, that I would never
be good enough to do it, andguess what, I never did it.
Ultimately, I dropped out ofvolleyball because I hated

(03:43):
running so freaking much andbecause I got into horses, and
so I decided I'd rather justride horses than have to go run
a mile every Friday, because I'mnever going to run my mile in
time.
So I might as well just quitand I quit.
And the thing is is that this ishow our minds work.
We might actually have theability to be good at something,

(04:03):
but somewhere along the way inour lives, somebody told us that
we sucked at it or we weren'tany good at it, or that we would
never be able to do it, and webelieved it, even though we
might not have said like oh,so-and-so said this, I'm going
to choose to believe that thisis my fate.
It was there in our brain, itwas burned into our minds and
sometimes the things that aresaid or the things that lead us

(04:24):
to this place where we believewe're not good at something,
it's not done on purpose or it'snot some terrible thing.
Somebody was like I'm going todusting Corinda to never be able
to run or to write a paper inher life and she's going to
think she sucks at these things.
People don't do this on purpose, unfortunately.
People don't realize howpowerful their words are and
people don't realize that onesimple little statement that

(04:45):
they say could lead to believingthat you were incapable of
something for your entire lifeand that you suck at it.
Every time you sit down to dothat thing, you're going to
dread it.
It's not on purpose, guys, Ipromise you that.
But the cool part is is you canbegin to recognize when these
things happen to you and they'restopping you in your tracks.
You can begin to recognize whenthese things happen to you and
they're stopping you in yourtracks.

(05:06):
So my challenge for you is tosit down and to think about all
of the things in your business, all of the things in your life
that might bring a sense ofdread or like I hate this, and
to choose one of those thingsyour weakest skill, I like to
say and to decide that you weregoing to master that skill.

(05:27):
Decide that you were going tomake that thing your strongest
skill.
What you're going to find isthat you're going to understand
it and appreciate it more andall of a sudden, that thing that
you once dreaded actually mightbecome fun.
And if, once you understand it,it's still not fun and you

(05:48):
still despise it, well then, maybe that's a good sign that
it's actually something that'soutside of your zone of genius
and something that you can'toutsource.
But a lot of times, businessowners just find something they
dread and they're like I'm justgoing to find someone else to do
that for me and they outsourceit.
And it doesn't work when theyoutsource it, and the reason it

(06:09):
doesn't work is because theydidn't understand it themselves
to begin with to be able toappropriately and effectively
outsource that task.
So decide today what you wantyour word of the year to be, or
your skill of the year, so tosay.
Over the last few years, my wordof the year or skill of the
year has varied in so manydifferent ways.
One year it was writing.

(06:31):
I literally read every book Icould read about copywriting.
I watched all the webinars, Iwatched videos, I listened to
podcasts, I wrote until Iunderstood how to write that
year and after I did that, writing wasn't so bad.
There was another year that wasmy year of marketing, and I
spent the entire year learningeverything under the sun about

(06:52):
marketing.
And I didn't just learn fromphotographers or the photography
space.
I learned from every industry Icould.
I read all the books, I hiredcoaches, I hired mentors, I ran
the ads, I hired agencies.
I did all of these things.
I spent so much money, so muchtime, so much energy, learning,
marketing, that marketingstarted to become easy.
Finally, because I actuallyunderstood it.

(07:15):
I've had years when my wordwasn't quite so skill-based.
I've had years where my wordwas balance, finding balance in
my life.
I just wanted to figure out inthat year how to bring more
balance in my business, mypersonal life and all of the
things in my life.
Balance has been a word of myyear before.

(07:35):
There's been a lot of differentthings over the years that I've
decided to make my word of theyear.
I was talking to my husbandactually earlier today about
recording this episode and I wastelling him that I had actually
been struggling a bit to figureout what my word was going to
be this year and I'm still not100% sure what I want my word to
be.

(07:55):
The last couple of weeks havebeen a little bit crazy to start
the year and that's not how Iexpected it to happen and
because of that I haven't hadthe time to sit down and reflect
and journal and think aboutreally where I want to focus my
time and energy and attentionthis year and my growth, and my
husband told me that his wordfor the year is intention.
He wants to be more intentionalin everything he does and I

(08:19):
thought, wow, that's such a goodword, that's such a good theme
for the year, like being moreintentional with your time, with
your energy, with your focus, with your health, with whatever
it might be, with your business, with your work.
I think that's a really, reallypowerful word and I really
loved that that was his word.
So, take some time, reflect onyour business.

(08:40):
It might be a task-based thing,it might be something a little
bit more I don't know nottask-based, like intention or
balance or magic.
I don't know.
Maybe your word of this year ismagic.
That's kind of a lot of mystuff that I'm sharing and
teaching this year revolvesaround finding more magic in
your life.
So maybe your word is findingmagic in your business or your

(09:01):
life again, finding that sparkledeep down inside of you that
you know is there but maybeyou've lost.
Maybe your word of the year ismyself.
Maybe it's about findingyourself again or discovering
what's special about you andyourself.
Think about what you want it tobe and decide what you want it
to be.
Once you decide your word ortheme for this year, I want you
to send it to me.

(09:22):
Head over to Instagram atMasterYourMindMoney, and send me
a DM and let me know what yourword of the year is, because I'm
curious to hear what all ofyour different words are and
what you're focusing on, andmaybe I can share something that
would help encourage you orpoint you in the right direction
to work more towards your goaland your focus for this year.
So let me know what your wordis.
Once you find your word, thenit's time to decide how you're

(09:45):
going to focus on this word.
Something I would stronglyencourage you to do is to put
your word up somewhere in youroffice, in your house, put
little things around your hometo remind you of your word.
I want it to stay at top ofmind so that you're constantly
remembering oh yes, I'm supposedto be working on this.
Let's use balance.

(10:06):
Yes, I'm supposed to be workingon balance.
I'm supposed to be working onbalance in my life, in my
business, balance of all thethings.
And you're constantly remindedby that and you can ask yourself
am I living true to this word?
Am I growing in this way?
Am I working towards this or amI letting it go to the wayside?
Keep a really close tab on thatand see where you're at.

(10:26):
The other thing is, I want youto take some serious time to
learn and look for resourcesthat will help you grow in that
area.
So, if your word is balanced, maybe you're going to read some
books on time management ormaybe you're gonna work on
strategies to be more efficientin your business so that way you
don't have to work so much.

(10:46):
Maybe you're gonna look forways to balance your own self,
with your family, with yourbusiness.
Maybe you're gonna work onself-care in your balance, find
something that's going to helpyou learn to be more balanced.
Find techniques, findstrategies, find a coach, find a
book, find a webinar, find aYouTube video, podcast, whatever

(11:07):
you can find.
Decide that you are going todigest a lot of information
surrounding that topic so thatyou can grow and you can learn
and you can absorb and you canbecome better and you can start
to master that skill and takesomething that you can grow and
you can learn and you can absorband you can become better and
you can start to master thatskill and take something that
you believe is your weakestskill and really master it this
year.
It could be your mindset.
Your word could be mindset.

(11:28):
Maybe you've really beenstruggling with your mindset in
around your business, in yourlife and you're just tired of
that constant back and forth ofhighs and lows and being stuck
and feeling like you don't knowwhere to do and negativity or
whatever it might be, or fear,or perfectionism, whatever that
may be.
And maybe this year you'regoing to focus on your mindset

(11:50):
and growing in your mindset andstop getting in your own way.
That's a great one to reallymaster.
So decide what it is.
Put reminders all over yourhome, create a strategy or a
plan to really dive into thattopic and to learn more about it
.
Look for resources.
If you are struggling to findresources, let me know.

(12:10):
I will reach out to my network,I will see what resources I
have available for you and Iwill share whatever I can to
help you with your word.
If you need help figuring outwhere to go and where to turn
and really just be intentionalwith spending time every week in
that space, in every week, checking in.
How am I doing on this?

(12:30):
If your word is balance for theyear, how am I doing on my
balance?
How did I do this week?
Was I good?
Did I kind of follow thebandwagon.
Do I need to work more towardsbalance?
How can I be better next week?
Check in at the end of everyweek, see how you're doing, keep
an eye on it and make sure thatyou're staying on track.

(12:51):
And if you find yourself fallingoff track, don't worry.
Remember, be kind to yourselfor, like I talked about in the
last podcast episode, be kind tome.
Don't forget that, because thatis extremely valuable when it
comes to growth, because there'sgoing to be days when you step
10 steps forward and there'sgoing to be days when you fall

(13:13):
20 steps back, but that's okay.
What matters is how you respondwhen you fall back.
What matters is how you respondwhen you fall down.
You get to choose whether youpick yourself back up and you
forgive yourself and you'regracious towards yourself and
kind to yourself, or if you findyourself beating yourself up

(13:33):
when you fall backwards.
Beating yourself up when youfall backwards or you get stuck
or you feel like you haven'tbeen doing.
What yourself up when you fallbackwards, or you get stuck or
you feel like you haven't beendoing.
What you need to do is notgoing to get you anywhere in
your business or your life.
It's going to pull you furtherbackwards.
So be kind to yourself, begracious to yourself, give
yourself a pat on the back fordoing the thing, even when it's

(13:55):
little.
If this is something that youstruggle with, I'm really,
really going to encourage you todo this.
And this is something that myhusband actually brought up to
me the other day, and he waslike Karinda, I really think we
should start doing this togetherevery day.
And I was like together, I haveto do this with you Really.
I mean, I love him, but thethought of doing this with him

(14:17):
is a little scary andintimidating.
I'm not going to lie, but hewas like you know, I really
think every day, we should startwriting down 10 things we're
grateful for and 10 things likewe've done or accomplished 10
positive things every day thatwe've been working towards.
Oh man, could you think of 10things you're grateful for, or

(14:38):
10 things you're proud ofyourself for, or 10 things
you've done each and every day?
The thought of that is kind ofscary.
I think sitting down andwriting down three things every
day, that would be easy, anyonecould do that.
But could you write down 10things every day that you're
grateful for or that you've doneevery day.
What would that change if youstarted to recognize even the

(15:00):
little things you were doing, orthe little things you were
working towards, or the littlethings that were happening in
your life?
I've been really challenging mycoaching clients the last few
months to celebrate their wins, even the small things.
And as you're working towardsthis word of the year or theme
of the year, and as you'reworking towards this word of the
year or theme of the year, andas you're going through this
growth journey, I really do wantyou to remember to pat yourself

(15:24):
on the back, remind yourselfthat you're doing okay.
I was on a coaching call withone of my coaching clients a
one-on-one call last week, and Ilooked at her and said raise
your hand up, put it on yourback and pat yourself on the
back.
Right now, you're doing so manygood things, but I hear you
saying I'm not doing enough, I'mnot doing good, I'm not doing

(15:47):
right.
This is something you're doinggood, you're doing amazing, but
you're forgetting to celebratethe little things in life, and
so I want to encourage you, asyou go on this journey this year
, to grow and to develop as aperson, as a business owner, to
master whatever it is thatyou're struggling with, to be
kind to yourself, to patyourself on the back.

(16:10):
If you haven't read Mel Robbinsher books, they're awesome.
She has a five-second rule bookand she has another book called
the High Five Method, and inthe High Five Method she
actually talks about how youshould wake up and give yourself
a high five in the mirror.
Sounds so, so weird and such atiny little thing.
But if you think about how youfeel when someone gives you a

(16:32):
high five and you think aboutthe power of just giving
yourself a high five rightInteresting thought how could
something as simple as givingyourself a high five in the
mirror every morning change yourtrajectory of what you're doing
and change how you feel aboutyourself and your life and your
business and all of those things?

(16:52):
Give yourself the high five, pat yourself on the back, write
down those 10 things you'regrateful for each day.
Write down the things you'reaccomplishing, no matter how
small they might feel, andcelebrate those things Y'all.
It doesn't have to be that youhad a $20,000 sale to celebrate.
Your celebration could be thatyou got out of bed, you put on

(17:16):
makeup, you put on real clothesand you sat down at your desk
today and got your work done.
That's a lot of accomplishments.
Actually Get out of bed, put onyour makeup, put on real
clothes and sit down at yourdesk and get work done.
That's four accomplishmentsright there.
Something as simple as gettingout of bed and putting on real
clothes could be something topat yourself on the back for.

(17:36):
But how many of you were justsitting there thinking, well,
yeah, everyone does that.
No, not everyone does that.
You were doing something goodby simply just getting out of
bed today and doing life.
You were doing a good job bymaking the decision to get up
and walk down your driveway.
I don't know if people walkdown their driveway, that's just
me.
We have a long driveway, so Isometimes go walk down my

(17:58):
driveway.
But the mere act of getting upand walking down the driveway
and stepping away from mycomputer to take a breath of
fresh air is an accomplishmentfor me, even though for you that
might sound crazy.
But it's really easy for me tosit down at my computer and just
not get up from eight o'clockto four o'clock when I'm done
working, but taking a break toget outside and get some fresh
air, something as simple as that.

(18:18):
Pat yourself on the back, giveyourself that high five and
celebrate your wins, no matterhow big or how small they might
feel.
This year, I want to know whatyour word is.
So seriously, take some timetoday, journal, write down some
ideas.
If you're struggling to figureit out, just ask yourself what
you dread the most.
Whatever you dread the most isa great place to start for your

(18:41):
word or theme of the year.
Maybe you're struggling tofigure out how to be a CEO of
your business and step into therole of a real business owner.
Your word could be CEO.
You just want to step into therole of a CEO this year, not
just be a photographer.
Maybe your word of the year issales.
Maybe you dread selling orthink that selling is terrible
and you want to get more of yourart on your clients' walls

(19:02):
because it's important to you.
So this year you're going tolearn everything possible in
your mind that you can aboutsales.
Maybe your word's marketing, like it's been for me in the
past.
Maybe it's balance.
Maybe it's connection.
This is a great one If you arestruggling in your business to
market and you feel like youdon't have any clients and you

(19:22):
feel like you don't know anybodythat could be your clients.
I'm going to challenge you touse the word connection this
year.
Connect with people, connectwith people in your community
and other circles.
Get out of your bubble and meetpeople.
That is one of the best thingsyou can actually do to market
your business is connect,connect, connect.
So maybe that would be a goodword for you.
There's so many things youcould do.

(19:43):
Maybe it's your mindset, maybeit's your money mindset that you
wanna master this year.
Whatever it might be right, share with me in the DMs what
your word is, post in ourFacebook group whatever your
word is, and hopefully I canencourage you and share some
resources and point you in theright direction of where to go.
