Speaker 2 (00:21):
Hello everyone.
Today I wanted to hop on andrecord an episode about a topic
that I heard from so many of youover and over again at Imaging
USA, and that topic is whyyou're stuck, or this idea of
being stuck.
I talked to so many of you thatwere like I know I need to do
(00:43):
something.
I talked to so many of you thatwere like I know I need to do
something, but I'm afraid to doit or I don't know how to do it,
or I don't know if it's theright choice.
And I wanted to record thisepisode to really dive into that
topic and share some insightsthat will hopefully help you get
over this being stuck and helpyou finally take the leap to do
the thing you need to do.
I will say that in my ownbusiness, some of the best
(01:04):
decisions that I made were inthose moments that I was at a
really big crossroads and I hadthis big, crazy idea that a lot
of times people were sayingGrinda, that's insane, don't do
that, that's going to set you upfor failure, because that is
too big and that is too crazy.
And I did it anyway.
I did it scared, I did itimperfect and I did it without
(01:27):
really knowing what could happenor without taking the time to
think what could happen wrong.
I am a worrier and I can worrythings till they are literally
into non-existence anymore.
I can talk myself out ofanything, but what I've learned
is that if I take action quicklyand I do things in the moment
when that inspiration strikes, Ican go do really big, scary
(01:51):
things without getting and, honestly, I can't ever think of
a time that I've done somethingbig and crazy on a whim in my
business that hasn't paid off orhasn't taught me a lesson or
hasn't caused me to grow.
So I will say that nothing thatyou ever do if it feels scary
right now, whatever that thingis, if it feels scary nothing
(02:13):
you are ever going to do isgoing to destroy your business.
You might not succeed in yourown terms or what you thought it
would look like, but you canlearn from it and you can grow
from it.
So remember this there is nofailure, there is no train wreck
.
That can happen in all reality.
What matters is, whatever theresult is, you take that result
(02:38):
and how you grow through it orlearn through it.
Okay.
So that's the first thing Iwanted to share with you and let
me, I'll share with you.
I'll go ahead and share withyou one really big thing I did
in my business that everyonetold me I was crazy for doing.
When I decided, after doingweddings and newborns for five,
six years, that I was going tobe a horse photographer, I
(02:59):
literally, one night, sitting ina hotel room in Kentucky, was
like you know what?
I'm going to be a horsephotographer and I'm going to do
this full time horses.
I'm going to give up my weddingand my newborn brand.
I had built a newborn studio onmy property.
I was really well known forwhat I was doing in the equine
or sorry, in the wedding and thenewborn space, and then I was
(03:21):
just like I'm going to throw itall away, to do something
different, to do what my hearttells me that I need to be doing
in this moment.
I stayed up late.
I built an entirely new website.
I created all my new socialmedia accounts, I made a logo.
I did everything in one nightand the next day I hit publish
on that website and said, heyguys, I'm an equine photographer
(03:44):
now.
And then I also did somethingthat was even wilder.
On top of it, I told the wholeworld the very next day that I
was going to photograph 365horses over the next year.
I didn't think it through.
I knew what I was going to do.
I had a plan in mind or an ideain mind of how this was going
to help me grow my business, butI literally drummed up one
(04:08):
night and put it out into theworld the next day and I told
people the next day.
I didn't just keep it in mybrain, I went out and I shouted
it from the rooftops and I saidthis is what I'm going to do,
and over the next year I woulddo just that.
I would shut down my weddingand my newborn photography
businesses and I would dive intoequine photography full-time,
(04:29):
photograph 365 horses and Iwould build a brand that is very
well known in the horsecommunity and that people go oh,
you're that girl thatphotographed 365 horses.
And as a matter of fact, it'sfunny I was at imaging and I was
chatting with somebody and theywere like what's your horse
page?
And I told them 365 days ofhorses, which is my Instagram,
(04:52):
if you want to check it out.
And they looked up and they'relike you're that girl.
I'm like yes, that is me.
So some of y'all might've heardthis story before, like on
another podcast or something, but that is me.
I did the big crazy thing andwhen I told my business coach at
the time, she actually told methat's insane, that is not going
to go well.
And she also said somethinglike you need to be selling in
(05:13):
online galleries, even though Iwas doing IPS and she was a
sales coach, and she was likethere's no way that's going to
work.
I listened to her for the firstlike 10 horses, and then, after
the first 10 horses, I realizedthat was a dire mistake because
I had actually never sold outof online galleries.
I was doing sales pretty muchfrom the very beginning of my
business and I went back and didin-person sales with all those
(05:34):
clients and that's actually theyear I also started doing
in-person sales over Zoom, whichnot a lot of people were doing
back then.
Now it's a lot more common, butI was doing it over Zoom
because I didn't have thecapacity, time or ability to
meet with all my clients reallyin person because they lived all
over the country.
I also traveled all over thecountry, photographed clients in
different states and reallyjust did this big crazy thing
(05:58):
and people always ask me likehow were you able to do this,
what was it?
And I really think it wasacting when the inspiration
struck and just going out andsaying I don't care what the end
result is in this, I'm justgoing to go do it.
I'm either going to make ithappen or not, and if I don't,
so what?
Who cares?
Okay, all too often when we arethinking about doing something
(06:21):
big in our business, we get inour own way, we get stuck.
So let's talk about this.
We're afraid of failure.
We might even be afraid ofsuccess.
We might have imposter syndrome.
There's all of these thingsthat come into play.
Maybe we're afraid of spendingmoney, and whatever we're trying
to do requires spending moneyor asking our clients to spend
us money.
(06:41):
Maybe we're afraid of money, right, there's all these things
that can get in our way.
And actually in our book, theUnicorn, we have an entire
chapter where we break down allof these fears Fear of failure,
fear of success, impostersyndrome, fear of making money.
All of these things thatsometimes sound a little crazy,
but when we look at them, a lotof us are guilty at letting
these fears stop us and get inour way.
(07:06):
So we have to acknowledge whenthese things are happening,
right.
We have to acknowledge like oh,why am I afraid here?
Am I afraid that if I put thisout into the world, that I'm
going to fail at it?
So what happens if you fail?
If you fail, this is like oneof the biggest things I hear
people say what if I fail?
What if it doesn't work?
So what, who is going to bethere going?
Woohoo, she failed.
Look at her.
Let's all point our finger ather and laugh at her.
(07:28):
No, nobody's going to be doingthat, and if they are doing that
, they're not people you need inyour life anyway.
But it's what happens and whatyou take with any bumps you find
in the road.
And I'm going to say not evenfailure, failure is not an
option.
You're not going to fail atanything, right?
You're going to say not evenfailure is not an option.
You're not going to fail atanything, right.
You're going to pivot, you'regoing to change, you're going to
grow, you're going to changethings as you go.
So that way that doesn't happen.
(07:49):
You're going to try harder andtry more and continue to evolve
until it works.
Right.
Don't be afraid of that failure, don't be afraid of the what-ifs
, don't be afraid of success, like sometimes it's as simple as
if I'm successful and I do thisand this really works, I'm
going to be like so successfulthat what are people going to
(08:10):
think of me?
I'm going to make so much moneythat my family is going to be
like look at her.
Or maybe I'm going to make moremoney than all my photographer
friends and they're not going towant to be friends with me
anymore, whatever, it might beright See how silly those things
sound when I say them out loudbut those are real things that
are stopping us in our head.
Maybe we have imposter syndrome.
(08:30):
Maybe we think we're not goodenough.
Maybe we think our work isn'tgood enough to go out there and
sell wall art.
Maybe we think our work isn'tgood enough to go out there and
charge thousands of dollars.
Maybe we think our work isn'teven good enough to go out there
and put ourselves out there andmarket ourselves and tell
people that they should workwith us.
We are our own worst critic.
And you know what?
(08:51):
I'll tell you this you don'thave to be the best photographer
, you don't have to have wonawards to make money, to build a
business to get clients.
Your clients, honestly, don'treally know the difference in a
technically correct,award-winning image and one that
isn't so.
Stop beating yourselves up, stopbeing so hard on yourselves.
Take your hand, put it on yourback, give yourself a pat on the
(09:13):
back and say you're doing agood job, you're a great
photographer, you're amazing, people want to work with you,
whatever it may be.
Pat yourself on the back alittle bit more and remember, be
kind to yourself.
Pat yourself on the back alittle bit more and remember, be
kind to yourself.
Be kind to yourself through theprocess of making a big change.
The next thing I want to talk toyou about is how sometimes we
(09:33):
don't make changes because we'reoperating in our comfort zone.
We're doing the same thing we'vebeen doing forever and the
thought of making a change isscary.
Or we're operating in a smallcomfort zone and making this
change means that we're going tohave to grow, we're going to
have to evolve, we're going tohave to stretch ourselves into a
(09:54):
place that feels uncomfortable, and the thing is that we should
lean into discomfort.
We should not fear it, becauseoftentimes, if we're making a
decision or a pivot or a changein our business and it feels
easy, it's not a big enoughpivot, it's not a big enough
change.
We're not stretching ourselvesfar enough.
We have to learn to recognizethat discomfort of doing
(10:19):
something new is okay and it isgood.
If you're making a pivot, ifyou're making a change, if
you're setting new prices, whatever it might be, and it
feels easy, you're probably notstretching yourself far enough.
You probably need to bump thoseprices up or add another zero
on the end of your goals, orwhatever it might be.
Don't be afraid to stretchyourself and go outside of your
(10:41):
comfort zone into something thatfeels really uncomfortable.
When I ask photographers likehow much revenue do you want to
make in your business each year?
This is one of those questionsthat I find photographers
staying in their comfort zone.
They're like I would love tobring in $100,000 a year.
I'm like is that really whatyou want to do?
Like, really deep down in yourheart, is that what you want to
(11:02):
do?
Or does that feel safe?
And after a little bit ofprompting I normally find that
they say you know what?
Yeah, that is just playing itsafe.
I do want to stretch myselffurther.
I would actually really like tobuild a half million dollar per
year photography brands.
It's what I would really loveto do, but it sounds so insane
(11:25):
and it feels so scary and sooutside of anything.
I know that I don't really wantto admit it to people.
Don't be afraid to play it big.
Don't be afraid to not playsmall.
The other thing that can comeinto play here is the stories
we're telling ourselves right.
A lot of times, when we'resitting here thinking about, for
example, raising our prices orswitching to IPS and selling
products, we're saying you knowwhat?
No one's going to pay, thatthose people don't live.
(11:47):
Where I live, my clients wouldnever spend thousands of dollars
on their portraits.
Do you know those things?
Like, honestly, whatever thisthing is in your head that
you're thinking about right now, like, just take a second, think
about it.
What is it?
Hold it in your head.
Why haven't you done it?
What are you afraid of?
All those stories that arepopping into your mind right now
(12:10):
?
Write them down If you'redriving down the road.
Come back to this later.
Write them down and look atthose stories and ask yourself
is this actually true?
Do I actually know that myclients won't spend this money?
Do I actually know that therearen't people in my community
that are willing to investthousands of dollars on
portraits?
No, you don't know any of thosethings because you haven't
asked them, you haven'tpresented them with the
opportunity to do so in theright way.
(12:31):
You can't know that thesestories are true until you've
actually tested them outyourself.
And, honestly, your brain isgoing to try really hard to
convince you that those storiesare true.
And I'm going to tell you that,if you have one of those
stories, bring it to me, post itin my Facebook group, send me a
DM, whatever it might be,because I want to help you
debunk this story.
I want to help you convinceyourself that this is not an
(12:54):
actual truth.
This is a story you've made upin your head to protect yourself
from doing the big, scary thingyou need to do in your business
.
Stop telling yourself thestories, stop entertaining the
stories, and learn how to changethose stories and go out and
attack the big, scary thing.
We've talked a bit about how weget our own way.
Now we need to talk about howwe can change this mindset that
(13:15):
we have that is stopping us.
Those stories that are comingup in your head are the thoughts
that are holding you back.
We have to rewire those.
We have to catch those thoughts.
We have to catch them and writethem down first.
That's my first piece of adviceI want to give you those
thoughts, those stories, thoselies you're telling yourself
that are not true.
Catch them, write them down, look at them and say is this
(13:38):
actually true?
And rewrite this.
It's going to feel like you'remaking up a load of crap in the
beginning.
Rewrite the story.
People in my community areexcited to spend thousands of
dollars on their portraits.
People in my community areexcited to buy wall art that
costs five or six thousanddollars and they're going to
pull out their credit card andhand it to me and be so excited
(13:59):
about this gorgeous portraitthat I'm creating for them.
Write the new story and everytime you feel that hint of doubt
popping into your head, I wantyou to go back to that.
Keep a note in your phone.
Write it down.
Whatever you have to do, say itout loud.
Say it in front of the mirror.
Put a sticky note on yourmirror.
Whatever you need to do, startto rewrite those stories.
Start to reiterate the new, positive story.
(14:21):
I know this sounds woo-woo, butthere's science behind it.
It works.
It is a real thing.
You can literally go online andGoogle scientific research
about changing your thoughts andthe results that happen and the
way it affects your brain andall this cool stuff.
It works.
I promise it's not just so muchwoo.
So start to rewire thosethoughts.
Start to your thoughts.
(14:42):
Do not let those bad thingstake over your mind and stop you
from doing what you need to do.
The other thing that I'llencourage you to do is to start
taking small steps every daytowards whatever it might be.
Small steps, do something everyday in the direction you want
to go to.
Also, while I'm on that topic, stop letting yourself down.
(15:03):
Stop treating your business anydifferent than you would a job.
Let me explain what I mean there.
If you were at your job andyour boss said to you hey, I
need you to do this today.
I need you to go out and I needto update this price sheet and
I need you to tell clients thisis our new pricing, you would do
it right.
Your boss told you to do it.
(15:24):
But you're sitting here sayingI need to update my price sheet
and raise those prices, but I'mafraid to.
So I'll do it next year, I'lldo it next month, I'll look at
it for the next six months andhem and haw over it and agonize
over it, and then maybe one day,I'll do it.
What if your boss just told youto do it?
What if I am your boss righthere and I'm saying go, do this
(15:45):
thing?
You're going to go do it right.
So why is it that we are soeasily readily letting ourselves
down by not doing the things weknow we need to do, when we
wouldn't let somebody else downif they asked us to do it for
them?
Let that sink in for a second.
That one always gets somebodywhen I say it, and I hate to say
(16:06):
it because sometimes it soundsa little like cynical, but it's
the truth.
Right, start treating yourbusiness more like your job and
your business and go, do thethings you need to do.
The next thing when we talkabout this mindset stuff is stop
going to what if this fails.
Replace that.
What if it fails with what?
If this works, what?
How will it change my life Ifthis works?
(16:28):
What will it do for me?
If this works, how will itimpact my clients?
And the other thing that can beextremely helpful here is
surround yourself with actiontakers and people who are doing
the things you want to be doing.
If you know you need to raiseyour prices, but your
photographer besties are allcharging pennies and you're like
the only one over there yeah, Ishould raise my prices and
they're like no one's ever goingto pay those prices, don't do
(16:49):
it.
Find yourself a new communityof photographers to surround
yourself.
Community of photographers tosurround yourself.
If it's your family that'sdoing it to you and saying, no,
that's insane, no one's evergoing to pay those prices.
Find yourself a good group ofphotographers that are going to
support you and raise you up andlift you up and don't talk to
your family, don't talk to yourfriends about this decision
anymore.
Ok, I'm giving you permission.
Avoid the topic of pricing withyour family and friends.
(17:10):
I know we're talking aboutpricing, but that tends to be
the one thing that comes up.
It could be changing to a newgenre, too, or a million other
things that you know you need todo in your business.
If you are looking forcommunity, we have a lovely
Facebook group.
It's called PhotographyBusiness with Corinna Kay.
You can join us there.
Also, we're doing a free eventin February, on the 17th, 18th
(17:31):
and 19th all about how to builda unicorn business.
That would be a great event tojump on, be surrounded by other
photographers who are ready totake action and ready to do the
thing, whatever it might be.
It's different for everybody, but if you want to be surrounded
by a great community of actiontakers, that would be a great
room to be in and hopefully youcan make some friends on there
and build a community of peoplethere.
(17:52):
If you are struggling and youdon't have that group of people
to surround yourself with, I'llpost the link and the details
for that in the show notes soyou can join us as well, or DM
me if you want the details aswell on social media.
The other thing I want to tellyou is make a clear plan to do
the scary thing.
Create a step-by-step plan.
But don't use creating astep-by-step plan as an excuse
(18:17):
not to do the thing, because Iknow some of you are going to be
like oh, I'm going to make theplan to raise my prices and I'm
going to sit here and make theplan for the next year and then
for the next year, I'll make aplan on how to implement that
change.
Don't let making the plan bethe thing that stops you.
Make a plan, immediate action, things you're going to do
quickly and just dive into it.
(18:37):
Okay, practice doinguncomfortable things in your
day-to-day life, because that'sgoing to make doing the big,
scary thing in your business alittle bit easier.
I will say I am not a coldplunger, but I have heard a lot
of amazing podcasts.
I've read a lot of amazingbooks about cold plunging.
I have heard a lot of amazingpodcasts.
I've read a lot of amazingbooks about cold plunging and
(19:01):
part of the reason why coldplunging is so good for people.
Yes, there's physical and realthings that happen in your body.
But it's the mental thing, it'sthe mental toughness that comes
out of cold plunging that trulytransforms people.
It's the mental toughness thatyou acquire by taking the action
to go get in a freezing coldtub and shiver for three minutes
, and that ability to deal withthe difficult thing, that all of
(19:25):
a sudden, when you are in yourday-to-day life and you are
confronted with a difficultthing, you are able to say this
is no big deal, I can do this, Ican get in a cold plunge for
three minutes.
This is no big deal, right?
You have to learn how toincrease your tolerance to
uncomfortable things as abusiness owner, because there's
going to be a lot ofuncomfortable moments.
So work on ways to do thedifficult things, take
(19:49):
uncomfortable action and buildthat momentum.
And don't take it so personallyeither as you're doing it.
When you're doing the big scarything I mentioned this briefly
don't let your outsideinfluences negatively impact the
big scary thing and the actionyou need to take.
This could be clients, family, friends, self-doubt, right?
There's all of these influences, both internally and externally
(20:12):
, that are going to come out ofthe woodwork when you're doing
the big scary thing.
I always say that when you'redoing the thing you're supposed
to be doing, that's when youwill find that everything
happens in life.
Last year was that year for mewhen I was like launching the
book and doing all these amazingthings, and it just felt every
time I tried to do somethinggood and big, that everything
(20:33):
that could happen in my lifewould happen all at once.
And big, that everything thatcould happen in my life would
happen all at once.
And I had two choices right.
My choice was to take that andjust let it stop me completely,
or to take that and say this ismy sign that this is what I'm
supposed to be doing.
And I chose to take thosethings and say this is my sign
that this is what I'm supposedto be doing, and I'm going to
fight back even harder.
Let me say it's like whenyou're doing what you're
(20:54):
supposed to be doing in theworld, the devil's going to rear
his ugly little head and talktrash in your ear and then also
try to make everything in yourlife go crazy.
Do any of y'all feel like that?
I know this happens.
I talk to photographers all thetime that are like I'm trying
to build my business.
I'm trying to do this.
I want to go it.
Just hold on and push harderinto it when you feel the world
(21:18):
or life or whatever it isattacking you at that moment.
And the last thing I want toshare with you about this is
take imperfect action.
Don't wait for the right time.
Don't wait for the first of theyear.
Don't wait till the end of thequarter.
Just do it now.
Do it now, change now.
You can always tweak it, youcan always adjust it, you can
always make it better as you go.
But the only way to get thereand really learn how to do it is
(21:40):
just to take imperfect actionand grow and change and adjust
as you go right, step in theright direction and you're going
to get there eventually.
But if you stay stuck whereyou're at, you're never going to
get there.
You're never going to get closeto where you want to go.
Never going to get there.
You're never going to get closeto where you want to go.
Okay, I hope this has beenhelpful and I hope that y'all
are taking this and going.
Oh man, there's this thingthat's just been burning in the
(22:02):
back of my head that I know Ineed to do and this is what I
needed to hear.
Get off my butt and go do thething.
So let's recap here Get out ofyour own way.
Understand what's going on.
Understand these stories you'retelling yourself.
Start to rewrite these stories.
Start to understand that thesestories are getting you stuck
and they're not true, and youcan pivot and you can take these
(22:23):
stories and turn them intosomething better and valuable
for you.
Stop thinking like what if Ifail?
Instead, think what if thisworks?
So what if you fail?
It doesn't matter right, and dothe scary thing.
Take action.
Don't let your perfectionismI'll throw this out there don't
let your perfectionism ofperfecting the plan before you
implement it stop you from doingit.
(22:44):
Learn how to deal with thoseuncomfortable moments and be
okay with adapting and changingand optimizing as you go,
because that is the only way toget there.
I love each and every one of youand I know that, whatever it is
that's in your head or in yourheart burning to do it, you can
do it.
Trust me, if I can do what I'vedone, you can do it too.
(23:04):
I wholeheartedly believe thatmy life is not perfect.
I am not the most organized, have my stuff together person in
the world.
But I can do this because Ihave realized that I just have
to take the action and do thething.
Okay, that's how I've gottenwhere I'm at.
That's how this podcast is here.
I just have to do the thing, and sometimes that means doing
(23:25):
the thing uncomfortably.
Go do the thing, send me a DM onsocial media, let me know what
the thing is for you that youknow you need to do.
It might be like there's ahundred things you know you need
to do, but I'm guessing there'sprobably one or two really big
things that are burning in yourmind right now.
And send me a DM, let me knowwhat it is.
Post in our Facebook group, photography Business.
Tune Up and hopefully I willget to see you at our free event
(23:46):
that is happening next week,february.
I keep forgetting the dates 17th, 18th and 19th.
I'll post the details in theshow notes and hopefully, when
we get on there, you can shareyour big, scary thing, and that
event will help you find moremagic in your business and
really truly build the unicornbusiness of your dreams.
The event is called the UnicornPhotographer Masterclass and on
(24:10):
the masterclass we'll be reallydiving into what it's going to
take to build the business thatyou truly love.
And if your business feels likethis mythical creature that you
just don't even know exists, oryou're just like searching for
this mythical creature in yourbusiness, I'm going to help you
figure out what that looks likefor you and hopefully get a few
steps closer over those few daysto really truly falling in love
(24:33):
with your business and having abusiness that you love and
feels good for you and hopefullyis not a cookie cutter of what
someone told you you should do,because I want each and every
