Il a écrit de très nombreux textes et discours dont Les Philippiques, qui lui coûtèrent la vie. Ce sont quatorze discours qu’il prononce en 43 avant Jésus-Christ contre le puissant Marc Antoine, juste après l’assassinat de Jules César. Cicéron y fait de Marc Antoine l’ennemi public numéro 1. Côté rhétorique, rien à dire, c’est impeccable. Aujourd’hui encore, une philippique est un message violent. Si vous voulez briller au cours d’une soirée chic, vous pouvez annoncer négligemment que vous venez d’adresser une philippique à votre pire ennemi. Effet garanti. Mais côté politique, Cicéron se met en grave danger.
