Feeling seen, feeling understood, feeling like not only other people are truly listening to you, but that you're able to be fully present for yourself.

It's a simple act in theory but it can be very hard in practice for a number of reasons. Sometimes the manner somebody is trying to be seen violates boundaries. In other cases it forces us to look at things within ourselves that we quite frankly would rather not.

This gets a bit scattered admittedly, but there is so much to this and it is very hard to do any justice in a small amount of time. This involves many hard conversations and a lot of very powerful, difficult work.

That work is so important. It's not necessarily the solution to any one thing, of course. But it's the first step to EVERYTHING. Whether it's a universal conflict or an internal struggle. Macro or micro, it's the same.

We can't fix anything if we can't understand what we're all seeing. Does it mean we have to agree on what we see? Of course not, we all have different values and life experiences and we will never all see the world the same way. But the openings come when we understand each other and why we see things the way we do.

It starts with seeing. It starts with feeling seen.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
