In this this is Missing in Hushtown season one. This
is from book one, Chapter four, The weeks before March
twenty fifth, two thousand and four, Jennifer Wicks and her

fiance Joey Benton, are sitting together at the doctor's office.
Once they're called back, they walk together through the halls
and are ushered into a small room. The door is
closed and they exchange a look one of excitement and unknown,
but of love. Jennifer and Joey were engaged. They wanted
(03:04):
to get married, and according to Joey, this is the
appointment where Jennifer Wicks discusses with her doctor about going
off birth control. Now, we always have to consider our source,
and since we heard this information from Joey, we needed
to do a bit more digging. As it turns out,
a party who would like to remain anonymous also confirmed
disappointment with us. So where have it? An engaged couple
(03:30):
in love hoping to start a family who perhaps unknowingly
have very limited days left together. Shortly after this appointment,
in fact, it's the week leading up to the Wicks
girls's disappearance, Jennifer calls her mother Kathy from inside the
Benton home.
Speaker 5 (03:55):
Mama, Adrian isn't really good. She's in pain. She's saying
it hurts the pay. I'm worried about her, and she
won't stop crying. Nobody will take us.
Speaker 6 (04:05):
To the doctor. They won't take you. Tenny is a nurse.
She won't take you.
Speaker 5 (04:12):
No, she says, it's just the diaper rash. Nobody will
drive us, but Adrian is in a lot of pain.
Speaker 6 (04:18):
I'm ama, way, no, you.
Speaker 5 (04:21):
Know you're not allowed on their property. Mom, they wouldn't
want you here.
Speaker 6 (04:26):
Jennifer, Kay, then hang up and call your Aunt Lisa

Jennifer then dials her Aunt Lisa. Within minutes, Aunt Lisa
is at the Benton home to take Jennifer and Adriana
to the emergency room. Remember, Aunt Lisa is the mother
of Joey Benton's best friend at the time, Jeffrey, so
she is invited at this residence. Along the drive, it's
a parent that two year old Adriana is in pain.

Jennifer sits next to her baby, anxious about what could
be wrong. Her mind begins to race about what could
have caused this. Mom guilt floods in. She knows Adriana
is well cared for, she knows she's loved, she knows
she's happy. What if something serious is wrong? They arrive
at the emergency department with North Crest Hospital in Springfield, Tennessee,
(05:21):
and Robertson County on March twenty second, two thousand and four,
at eleven forty five pm, just three days before they
would last ever be heard from. According to official medical
records provided to me by the family, Adriana was admitted
to the hospital with an initial diagnosis of dysyria. According
to Mayo Clinic, dysuria is quote painful urination in trouble
(05:45):
or burning while passing urine. This is often felt in
the tube that carries urine out of the bladder or
around the genitals end quote. According to official North Crest
Hospital records provided to me by the Wicks family, Adriana
was given and the principal diagnosis of vaginitis non infectious.
The dysuria is a name provided on charge to indicate
(06:06):
why the patient is being admitted painful urination. This goes
hand in hand with Jennifer's accounts. So what Adriana was
saying hurt? So what is vaginitis? Nos? The Mayo Clinic
describes vaginitis as quote an inflammation of the vagina that
can result in discharge, itching and pain end quote. When
the word vaginitis is brought up in relation to a
(06:27):
toddler girl, there are many concerns about the wellbeing of
the child. However, it actually isn't that uncommon in pre
pubescent girls. There are typically three main types that women
can contract, and just one is a sexually transmitted disease.
If the doctor had diagnosed Adriana with a non infectious
form of vaginitis, the sexually transmitted pathway may be ruled out,
(06:53):
or would it. Adriana was discharged, but would go missing
before more answers were reached. In more questions where asked
what diapers that were left on a baby for too
long could contribute to a bacterial diagnosis, as well as
vaginal contact with chemicals such as body washes and bath soaps.
And because we will not know the true cause of
(07:15):
this diagnosis, we have to go with what we do
know and what matters and what we know. After this
hospital visit, tensions become high in the Benton household. And
what matters is what Jennifer believes caused her daughter's vaginitis.
While we may never be able to confirm what Jennifer
(07:37):
believes happened, we can extrapulate from the events which will
unfold next. According to an official Robertson County Sheriff's Office
supplement report taken by Officer Mike Campbell on March twenty ninth,
six days after the visit to the er, he quotes
one of the family members by saying, quote, Jennifer had
originally taken Adriana to the North christ er and the
(08:00):
doctor and shift stated that the child appeared to have
some type of STD end quote. Now the report does
continue to say, quote the pediatrician that saw the child
the next day stated that the child could have gotten
the rash from wearing a wet diaper for long periods
of time end quote. So essentially, what we have were
(08:20):
two opinions on what could have caused of vaginitis. When
the girls leave Northcrest Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday,
March twenty third, two thousand and four, they are then
dropped back off at the Benton home. Jennifer settles Adriana
in and loves on her, and then she calls her grandmother,
known as Granny Wicks, for a ride to the pediatrician
(08:43):
follow up appointment that day. Is it possible that Jennifer
told her Granny Wicks what the doctor said about the
sexually transmitted disease if they didn't hear it from any
staff at North KRISSK. Could this be a clue as
to the conversation and concerns that Jennifer was talking through
with her Granny Wicks, you know, the concerns she had
for Adriana in the Benton home. Could this foreshadow the
(09:06):
fight Jennifer will have in the Benton home. Just two
days later, Jennifer calls her mom, Kathy and asks her
to meet her and Adriana at the Dollar General in
Cross Plains, just a few miles from the Benton home.
This time, Joey is behind the wheel. Jennifer gets Adriana
out of a car seat and Adriana reaches out for
her Mimi with open arms. As Kathy holds her grand baby,
(09:29):
her first grand baby, she recalls how obvious it was
that Adriana did not feel well. Jennifer collects what she
met Kathy for a homemade type of soothing cream for
the diaper area to help alleviate pain. Since Jennifer didn't
have her own cell phone, she is relying on the
Benton homeline for communication or Joey's cell phone, and according
(09:50):
to Kathy, Joey and Jennifer were fighting over Jennifer using
Joey's minutes to call her mother. Kathy goes to work
with a granddaughter on her mind, not knowing what was
to come. The following account of events occurred on March
twenty fourth, two thousand and four, around nine pm, and
are given by Jennifer's mother, Kathy her her recollection.

I'm what's on Joey's and my dad are being horrible.
Speaker 5 (10:24):
Doe's usually nice to me, but tonight he's been yelling.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
In my face.
Speaker 5 (10:28):
Sndy drew a brand and dinner and my dinner out
the back door and told us to.
Speaker 6 (10:33):
Go and eat like dogs. She's really worrying Jennifer, Kay,
where's the baby.
Speaker 5 (10:41):
She's in a room.
Speaker 6 (10:42):
We're trying to sleep.
Speaker 5 (10:43):
Trainer, but there's so much frighten going on she can't sleep.
Cindy's saying horrible things about me as a mother, about
how I'm unfit, and she wants stop going on and
on about how Joey shouldn't be taking care of a
kid that's not his.
Speaker 6 (10:59):
Jennifer, I can come and pick y all up right now,
I can be there in ten minutes.
Speaker 5 (11:04):
No, Mom, I'm grown, I can handle this. I'll call
you tomorrow.
Speaker 6 (11:11):
So get the baby. Just go get her and put
her in bed with you. Close the door and let
her sleep next to you. The night isn't a good
night to sleep hering? Okay, love you have you seen.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
This is the last time Kathy would speak with her
daughter ever. What were the Bentons fighting with Jennifer about.
Did Jennifer accuse the Bentons of mistreating her daughter? Did
Jennifer suspect Adriana was being abused by someone under the
Benton roof? Is it possible she confronted the family about it.
(11:49):
Were tensions high causing tempers to flare? Did a crying
child add to the fighting? Why would Jennifer go on
to tell Kathy that Cindy was jealous of her relationship
with Joey, that Cindy had a weird relationship with Joey.
Why would Jennifer tell Kathy that Cindy was upset about
(12:09):
Joey being alone in a room with Adriana while he
helped to sleep train her, and they make comments that
people will think he's like Michael Jackson. What did Jennifer suspect.
What did Jennifer know? What did Jennifer know? There were
five people living in that home on March two thousand
(12:30):
and four, but within the following twenty four hours only
three would ever be seen again, and they all have
