For years in Salt Lake County, February 9th was a date fraught with nervous anticipation. After the slaying of 6-months-pregnant Sonia Mejia in 2006 and Damiana Castillo in 2008, a dedicated police task force patrolled the area in hopes of preventing a repeat killing in the years that followed. It wasn’t until 2016 that authorities revealed that they knew the identity of the so-called “February 9th Killer,” and the suspect was finally extradited back to Utah in 2022. Today, concerned Utahns eagerly await the trial that could bring about a conviction 17 years in the making.
