Speaker 1 (00:43):
So what do you think are the key skills that every
coach should have?

Speaker 2 (00:47):
I think one of the biggest ones, for me at least,
is empathy is being able toreally understand the person
that you're trying to coach.
A lot of times we'll want tojump in and just give them steps
and tips and we don't take thetime to really understand where
they're coming from, and I thinkthat empathy really helps you

(01:07):
do that.
It puts the fear, or maybe theresponsibility of giving people
answers and really helps youunderstand, understand the other
person, understand theirstruggles and really connect
with them.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Yeah, and on that topic, before I share mine, I
really do like the idea ofempathy, because you're not just
rushing to judgment.
You're asking them questions tofind out why they're feeling
the way that they're feelingright now and making sure that
they understand there's no rightor wrong feelings, this is the
way they feel, but like kind ofmeeting them there, right.
Empathy doesn't mean thatyou're agreeing with them.

(01:43):
Empathy just means that you cansee it from their perspective
and when you can see it and youcan call out to it and they're
like, wow, like this personreally gets it, it opens the
door to at some point.
If they do want you to giveadvice, you can, but it's not
something you just rush and justgive advice.
I mean, I'm sure we've allexperienced this I've
experienced this this week whereyou rush in to give advice and
even at home, and you're like,oh, I didn't have all that

(02:04):
information right.
It's because you didn't take asecond to like slow down.
As a coach, you're alreadymaking a difference in the world
, but what if you could takeyour confidence and the results
of your clients to a new height?

even more client success.

Thank you for being willing tolean in.
Let's get right back into theshow.
For me, the number one skillthat I would ask every single
coach to practice more often islistening, and one skill that I
would ask every single coach topractice more often is listening

(02:45):
, and basically it's verysimilar to what you said, and
that is when you're having aconversation with somebody.
There's a difference betweenlistening to respond versus
listening and really tounderstand or to learn, right.
And so you ask a question andyou're not in your mind already
formulating the next question orwhat you're going to say next.
You're not going to feelconnected to that person, you're

(03:08):
missing the whole point, and soinstead it's actually just
asking a question and listening, and even allowing for silence
sometimes.
So if you ask a question and theperson doesn't answer
immediately, allow for silence, because that's them exploring
their subconscious mind, right, which means it's the greatest
opportunity to help them.
If they had an instant answer, then maybe it wouldn't be
something they'd need help with.
But if they're actually likehaving to slow down and to stop

(03:28):
and to think about it, meet you,ask the powerful question and
just wait.
But then do a good job oflistening, listen to what you
hear.
Obviously you can reflect backsome of that, but don't come up
with the questions before.
Actually wait until you haveall the information and then you
can.
