Why is it matter if you set intentions in your life?

Episode 7: Replace Setting Resolutions With Setting Intentions
Episode 48: Pick Your Word. Power Up Your New Year!

Last week I talked about how much habits are tied into our core beliefs about ourselves.

"It’s hard to change your habits if you never change the underlying beliefs that led to your past behavior. You have a new goal and a new plan, but you haven’t changed who you are."

- James Clear

So before you listen in today and get the framework for how to change your behaviors and take those small steps that are going to create big changes in your life…make sure you have gotten really clear about what you core values are.

What is most important to you?

What kind of person are you striving to become?

Are you ready to start a new chapter in your life? Let’s go.

The 4 Laws of Behavior Change
(Framework for building good habits and breaking bad ones)

#1 Make It Obvious (Cues & Environment)
-Environment matters most when intentionally shaping our actions.
-Being obvious means being specific.
-Being obvious means giving yourself cues that trigger your desire to do the habit you want.

#2 Make It Attractive (Craving & Desire)
-How can you make the habits you want to incorporate into your life more attractive and desirable?
-What are habits you are already doing that you love that you can stack a new habit onto?
-We imitate the habits of the close (family, friends), many (social norms), and powerful (influencers, leaders). Surround yourself with people who have the habits you want.

#3 Make It Easy (Reduce Friction)
-We naturally choose the path of least resistance. So let's use this tendency to our advantage in forming new habits!
-Start with one habit at a time so it doesn’t feel overwhelming.
-Start with the two minute rule, set a timer and cut yourself off after doing whatever the habit is for 2min.
-Start with habits that come naturally easy to you.

#4 Make It Satisfying (Reinforcement & Reward)
-Think about what brings you joy, what gets you excited, what feels like FUN to you and what motivates you.

Then how can you use those rewards in your habit system?

If you are wanting to break a habit INVERSE THE 4 LAWS

  1. Make it invisible (Remove cues).
  2. Make it unattractive (Reframe mindset).
  3. Make it difficult (Increase friction), make it so you have to put more effort in.
  4. Make it unsatisfying (Add accountability).
