Laura (00:02):
hello and welcome to money and career mastery from
overwhelmed to ownership.
I'm Laura Sexton, your abundanceand legacy coach here to help
you navigate the world of money, debt payoff, and career growth
with confidence and clarity.
In this podcast, we'll tacklethe financial and career
challenges, holding you back, optimize your income and build

(00:22):
the freedom that comes with trueownership.
If you're ready to break freefrom overwhelm, create a budget
that aligns with your values anddesign a legacy that empowers
future generations.
You're in the right place.
Well, hello, accelerators.
Today we're going to be talkingall about building a career that

(00:42):
you love.
Career satisfaction is essentialfor your overall health in
general, because there are somany people that are working in
a job right now that is justeating away at them.
And it's because they are notaligned with where they need to
be.
The connection between careerfulfillment and the legacy that

(01:03):
you leave is vast.
I sit and I think about myparents.
It's the best example I canthink of.
And I think of my mom workingfor decades as the top
accountant in Texas.

(01:24):
Well, my mother was in charge ofall of the finances and checks
payable and money coming in forthe entire state of Texas child
protective services.
You don't get to that level ifyou're incompetent.
You, in fact, have to be very, very good at what you do.

(01:46):
She had people on her employeethat would make 10 million
mistakes and she would fix them.
She was extremely satisfied withher career.
And it allowed her to not onlydo work that was impacting many,
many lives, but it also allowedher the time and the energy to

(02:08):
put effort into her family, tomake sure that I, as her only
child, was always a priority.
And part of my mother's legacyis that she was a Girl Scout
leader.
And she was a Girl Scout leaderon steroids.
She finished my Girl Scout groupand was like, all right, I'm
done.
And then she found a littlesecond grade girl that needed

(02:30):
something to do.
And she's like, well, I'll starta Girl Scout troop for her.
And she took the second gradegirl all the way up through her
senior year and was even acouncil leader for a should
allow you to still have spaceand time for other legacy
building opportunities.
So how do we build a career thatwe love?

(02:50):
Well, there are a coupledifferent ways we could go about
this.
You can work for someone elseand you work a traditional nine
to five or some semblancethereof and you are an employee
and there's nothing wrong withthat.
Or you become an entrepreneurand you build a business that

(03:11):
you love.
Thing with being an entrepreneuris you stop working nine to five
and you start working 24 seven.
It is so hard sometimes toremember that I don't work when
I'm not working and that I needto focus on the things that are
right in front of me.
So there are pros and cons toboth.

(03:32):
But if you want to build acareer that you love, There are
three strategy pieces that Iwant to give you to help you
build that out.
So how do we build a career thatwe love?
Strategy number one, identifyyour strengths and your
passions.
I have been very blessed to bementored by Ken Coleman.

(03:56):
Ken Coleman is a Ramseypersonality, number one national
bestselling author, and hefocuses on the career space.
And one of the things that hetalks about is making sure that
your talents, passions, andmission are aligned.
What does that mean?
Well, we find what we do bestand then that's our talents,

(04:17):
right?
And then our passion is the typeof work that we love doing.
Do you love working with yourhands?
Do you love working withnumbers?
Are you a people person?
Would you rather be in a darkroom and not have people around
you at all?
And then you can find yourmission.
Your mission is a result thatyou care deeply about.
For me, I care very deeply abouthelping people get in control of

(04:42):
their money so that they canleave a legacy.
I think that this world would beso much better off if we had
people who had lots of moneythat they could give to other
people.
If we created a world ofgenerosity.
What a beautiful place we wouldlive in.
So you have to get something, the key strategy here.

(05:03):
We have to get clear on what ourstrengths and our passions are.
There are many different ways todo that.
But I think one of the greatways to do it is to ask your
friends and your family, whatare my talents?
Ask people that love you, thatcare about you, that know who
you are, hey, what are some ofmy talents?
They're going to tell yousomething.

(05:24):
They're going to come back withsomething.
And hopefully, they're going tohelp you by giving you some
ideas or some things that youmaybe didn't recognize in
yourself.
Think to yourself also, whatkind of things come easy to you?
What are some things that you doon a regular basis that is so
easy, you're like, welleverybody does it.

(05:45):
For me, I actually enjoy makingbudgets.
I thought everybody knew how todo that, but no, not only does
everybody not know how to dothat, but a lot of people don't
even like doing it.
So it's really important to lookat what are some things that you
do that you find easy and canhelp other people because you

(06:05):
were so good at it.
And with that said, if you havea budget that isn't working for
you right now, or you've nevermade one to begin with.
I have a resource that's justfor you, it's called the better
budget bootcamp, and it takesyour core values.
The things that are mostimportant to you in your family.
And it helps you create a budgetthat aligns perfectly with that.
The better budget.

(06:26):
Bootcamp is a five day on demandcourse, 15 minutes of your time
for five days.
You'll be able to build out adream budget for you.
Based on what's most importantto you because yours is going to
look totally different thanmine.
And that's okay.
And then, you know, is there somewhere that you've

(06:47):
received an award?
That you've done a great job andpeople have recognized you for
doing well in a certain area.
If you can look at these threekey questions, you are going to
find your strengths and yourpassions.
The second strategy to finding acareer that you love or building
a career that you love is tothen research growth

(07:10):
opportunities within your fieldor industry.
Now, if you are already workingin industry and you're like,
this does not line up with mystrengths and my passions, we'll
have to talk about changingcareers and we'll get there
eventually.
But if you are in a businessthat you enjoy, or you really
like working with the peoplethat you work with and you want

(07:31):
to keep doing what you're doing,Where does the growth come?
What, what kind of next steps doyou have?
Go to your manager and say, Hey,I want to talk with you about
what a growth plan looks likefor me in this business.
I really want to continue to getback and grow.
And that also means that I mightneed to take a step back and do

(07:57):
some continuing education, butit might also mean, Hey, if you
can get this one certification,we can give you a raise.
And that is always awesome, because strategy number three is
to align your career choiceswith your financial goals.
Overall, we know that afulfilling career can lead to a
higher income over time.
If you're passionate about whatyou do, you will become very

(08:20):
good at it.
Think about all these realestate agents that sell million
dollar homes.
They do it because it's theirfocus.
They are constantly thinkingabout real estate and strategies
and marketing and how to getpeople into these homes and how
they can make connections andhow they can get the right
people into the right homes.
They are lit up, not necessarilybecause of the money.

(08:43):
But it's not just the money thatlights them up.
It's the chase.
It's the win.
It's the connection.
It's becoming the key that ismissing, the piece of the puzzle
that's missing.
That's what they get to do.
And so they are very fulfilledby their career.
Now, if you were only chasingmoney, you are going to find
that you are seriouslydisappointed at the end of the

(09:07):
day.
Your career fulfillment shouldhave more to do with your
mission and your purpose.
and less to do with the amountof income.
However, if you were like, well,if I'm going to make a change in
the world, I'm going to have tobe impoverished and I'm going to
have to never make money.
That's a horrible plan.

(09:28):
Guys, this is not real.
This is not real life.
Think about it.
There are plenty of educators inthe world.
Not all of them are teachers ina classroom.
Some teachers in a classroom canstill, even though they don't
get paid enough, like, let's behonest, I have to deal with four
kids at home right now.

(09:48):
I don't know how a teacher cando.
Possibly 16 to 30 children in aroom.
I don't know.
I think we should pay them more, honestly.
But teachers, as underpaid asthey are, are still one of the
top five categories of people.
Who are most likely to becomemillionaires because they follow

(10:09):
a strict plan.
Teachers make lesson plans allthe time and they know how to
follow a good plan.
So a teacher can still become amillionaire and retire
comfortably, but Amy Porterfieldis a teacher and she makes
millions and millions of dollarsa year.
She's a multi seven figurebusiness.
And she.

(10:31):
makes her money by teaching.
So you could come to me and go,well, I'm supposed to be an
educator.
That means I'm going to bebroke.
No, my friend, it does not.
You could come to me and say, well, I have a mission to serve
hurting people and I'm going tohave to start a nonprofit.
That's great.
You know what a nonprofit thatmakes no money is called?
Out of business.
That doesn't work.

(10:52):
You have to make money as a nonprofit.
The NFL, just for the record, isa non profit.
They make good money.
Any business that you start, youcan start as a non profit and
you can bring in a ton of moneyand give yourself a huge salary
and then have no profit at theend of the year because all of
it went to salary.
That happens a lot.
There are a lot of really shadynon profits out in the world.

(11:15):
Your career fulfillment, Can andprobably will lead to higher
income over time.
You may have to start lower.
You may have to go from the jobthat you're at now to somewhere
with a lower income, but overtime you will make more money.
This also will positively impactyour long term health.
One of my clients that I'mthinking of in particular has

(11:38):
been going through just theroughest time.
She's at a job and she's like, Idon't know why God brought me
here.
This is the worst.
She wakes up crying and it hasbeen absolutely terrible.
She's like, but I make reallygood money.
I have to stay here.
I'm like, no, no, no, you don't.
The difference her husband seesin her, the difference I see in

(11:59):
her, in just 10 short days ofher no longer working at that
company, it's night and day.
She is lighter, she is brighter, you can see the smile radiating
off of her.
You don't have to stay in aplace that you hate, just
because you're good at the work, and the money's good.

(12:22):
That does not make for asustainable lifestyle.
So you need to take actionablesteps to align your career up
for your own success.
Friends, it's not hard.
You identify your strengths andyour passions.
You research how you can grow.

(12:42):
In your field or industry.
And then you just realignyourself, realign your career
choices.
Now, obviously there are moresteps involved in actually
getting the job, but this is thebeginning.
This is getting clear on thethings that matter most to you
so that we can get you into thejob that you really love.

(13:02):
Friends, remember that thedecisions we make today impact
our lives and our legacies.
So make sure that you align yourcareer and you build out a
career that is something thatyou love because people are
going to be talking about you inthe future.
And you want to make sure thatwhen they think about you and
the work that you do, they lookon it with fondness and they

(13:25):
say, she was really good atthat.
He was really good at that.
And he made the world a betterplace because he did that.
That is what it means to findfulfillment in your career.
That is what it means to build acareer that you love.
And I'm so very much lookingforward to hearing about your
careers, your strategic actionplans.

(13:48):
