In this Legacy in the Little Things minisode, I’m reflecting on the surprising arrival of my 15-year college reunion notice—and the powerful money lesson I hope my kids learn from me: boundaries matter.

From holiday overspending to everyday Target runs, I’m sharing why “not yet” is sometimes the most loving answer, and how modeling financial limits teaches our kids patience, self-control, and confidence.

💡 Take a moment with me to reflect: What money moment did your kids witness this week—and what did they learn from it?

Laura (00:00):
Hey accelerators and welcome to The Legacy and the
Little Things Minisode that I'veadded to this podcast.
This week, I got a letter in themail stating that it was time
for my 15th college reunion.
I had to sit and do the mathbecause that certainly couldn't
be right, except it is, and.
That's really, really shocking.

(00:22):
It put into perspective a lot ofthings for me.
So I'm doing a couple minisodesfor you.
I would like to start having acouple different episodes a
week, just because I have somany things that I want to say,
and this just seems like theeasiest way for me to get them
to you.
So today I wanna talk about themost powerful money lesson.
I really hope my daughters andmy son learn from me.
You see, being a mom.

(00:43):
Being a mom is hard, and one ofthe hardest things for me to do
is say no.
It's funny because no used to bemy favorite word, and it, and it
still kind of is.
I do like saying no to certainthings that don't benefit me,
but it's really hard to say noto my children.
However, I realize that mychildren don't just absorb what
I teach.
They absorb what they see medoing.

(01:05):
I like to say it this way, ourkids are playing follow the
leader even when we don't knowwe're playing the game.
So recently we've had Easter.
We've had holiday holidayparties.
We've had so many things thatneed to get done, and
unfortunately I can't doeverything.
I mean, it would be cool if Icould, but I can't.

(01:27):
I would love to be able to givethem everything, every little
bit of their heart's desire, butI know that setting a financial
boundary is impactful.
It's important, it's necessaryfor them to see those
boundaries.
And the reason is becauseeventually they're not gonna be
in my home.
I'm not gonna be able to watchover them and care for them.
Eventually, they're gonna be outon their own and they're gonna

(01:49):
have to make their owndecisions.
I need them to see thatboundaries are there to protect
them, not to be broken.
Modeling a financial boundary isgoing to be much more impactful
than ever.
Talking about money could be.
I can say things and they willgo in one ear and out the other.

(02:11):
Saying, let's say for that.
That that will teach thempatience.
It's not deprivation.
And when they see the thingsthat they really want in the
store, that's great.
I'd like to ask, did you bringyour money?
If not, then I'm not buying itfor you, but you can save up and
make sure that you have enough, and next time we come, you can

(02:33):
bring your money.
You can get that if it's stillsomething you want.
Sometimes you really want it inthe moment, and then we get home
and you forget about itcompletely.
So just like every time we go toTarget or Five Below, which is
my kids' favorite place to spendtheir money,'cause their money
goes a lot further there, itbuys a lot of cheap crap, but
they seem to really enjoy it.

(02:54):
I've really enjoyed watching mychildren respect my boundaries
more and more as they mature, they realize that me saying, not
right now, not this time, thatdoesn't mean not ever.
So why don't you take a secondto reflect with me.
Reflect on a money moment thatyour kids observed this week.

(03:15):
What did they learn from it?
Are you happy with what theylearned?
Do you want them to emulatethat?
And if not, how are you going tomake a change so when they're
watching you, you will like whatthey're picking up?
If this is helpful or beneficialto you in any way, I'd love for
you to share this episode withsomebody that you love.

(03:35):
I hope you're excited thatMother's Day's coming up.
If you have a graduate in yourlife.
I'm excited for you and for thejourney they're about to go on.
So if there's anything I can doto be of service, please let me
know.
I'm here for you.
And as always, accelerators goout and make a difference.
