Laura (00:03):
hello and welcome to
money and career mastery from
overwhelmed to ownership.
I'm Laura Sexton, your abundanceand legacy coach here to help
you navigate the world of money, debt payoff, and career growth
with confidence and clarity.
In this podcast, we'll tacklethe financial and career
challenges, holding you back, optimize your income and build
(00:23):
the freedom that comes with trueownership.
If you're ready to break freefrom overwhelm, create a budget
that aligns with your values anddesign a legacy that empowers
future generations.
You're in the right place.
Hey, accelerators, I had aquestion for you.
Is your job helping you buildthe legacy that you want, or is
(00:44):
it just paying your bills?
This is a question that I wantto pose very often to people.
If they come to me and they feelstuck in a role that either it
pays fine, but it doesn'tfulfill them or it fulfills
them, but it's not paying well.
The biggest obstacle for a lotof people, their job pays the
(01:07):
bills, but it doesn't feel good.
It is completely not fun forthem to get up and go to work
every day.
One person comes to mind inparticular when I tell the
story.
Actually, I have two that I'mworking with right now that
really fit this description, butI wanna tell you Carla's story.
Carla has a stable job.
(01:30):
She moved to a different town ina different state to take this
job.
She's very good at this job.
But every week she wonders.
Is this all that it?
Is Do I want to get up everyMonday and spend five days, 40
(01:56):
hours doing this?
Sure.
It pays the bills.
Sure.
She's able to travel.
Where she would be if she everwas able to take time off.
But because of her role, it'sreally difficult to find a week
at a time for her to take off acouple days here and there.
Sure.
But a week to travel to go toItaly?
(02:18):
No, she hasn't been able to findthat yet.
She hasn't creative spark andheart for helping people.
But right now, when we startedworking together.
She would've told you that shedoesn't see a clear path to
using those gifts.
You see her struggle.
It's not laziness, and it's alsonot lack of gratitude.
(02:39):
She has a lot of good things tosay about her employer, but her
struggle, it's that she wantsher work to matter more than it
does.
If you can relate to that, Ifeel you.
I took two weeks off formaternity leave when I had my
precious fifth child, and she'swonderful.
(03:02):
But I only took off two weeksand people were like, are you
sure?
Are you sure you wanna comeback?
Like it's, it's only been twoweeks.
And I'm like, yes.
I love my job, and it was hardfor me to take two weeks off.
Because I love what I do and I'mfired up and I'm ready to go.
If you don't feel that way aboutyour job, if you're not excited
about going, we need to make ashift because I love the work
(03:28):
that I do.
That's one of the reasons why Igot tapped on the shoulder and
picked to be one of KenColeman's first career coaches.
At the time of this recording, there are only nine of us.
There are only nine Ramsaycareer coaches.
That number will quickly growbecause it's a very fun field to
be a part of, and Ken willcontinue to train.
(03:49):
Why did I get picked to be inthat inaugural group?
Because I love what I do and I'mfired up and I want other people
to be fired up as well.
And part of that.
Is because I know beyond ashadow of a doubt that if you
were fired up and wired up andready to go, you are going to
make an impact and leave thelegacy that you are desperate to
(04:10):
leave.
If you wanna make a change inyour community, you wanna make a
change in your family, you justwanna make a change in your
home, how you are and how yousee yourself, a lot of that
impact comes from the work thatyou do.
Are you making an impact in theworld?
So let's say that right now youaren't sure whether or not your
(04:34):
role is really where you wannabe.
Let's talk about it.
The first thing that you need todo, and you guys hear me say
this, I think I say this everysingle week, so forgive me if
you've heard this before, butit's important, so I will
continue to say it in case thisis your first time listening.
At which point, hello, it's sonice to meet you.
Thanks for being part of ourcrew here.
The first thing you need to dois you need to clarify your
(04:55):
values.
You knew I was gonna say it.
It's like budget and values.
These are the things that I talkabout the most, right?
So.
Clarify your top five values andhow they relate to your work Use
values like creativity, freedom, impact, family growth.
These are the things that aregoing to guide your vision, your
(05:16):
overall vision, and then checkand see how your values line up
with your job.
Use your values as a filter.
Not every job that pays well isgoing to fit into your legacy.
So let's audit your current job, right?
Look at what you're doing rightnow.
Are you in alignment with thosevalues that you just listed?
(05:38):
If you were not aligned, I wantyou to ask yourself, does my
current job allow me to livethese values weekly?
And you should ask yourselfindependently, does my current
job allow me to be creative?
Does my current job allow mefreedom?
And in what area?
Freedom.
Freedom in your time.
Freedom in your money.
(05:59):
Like what is the freedom thatyou're after?
Does my current job allow me tolive in these values weekly?
If not, the next question youneed to ask is, is there room
for change internally?
One of the other people thatcomes to mind when I think about
a job that pays really well butisn't fulfilling is my friend
Sherry, and Sherry is looking atmoving internally into a more
(06:24):
creative role.
She wants to quit doing whatshe's doing right now, which she
doesn't enjoy, but she would bemore fulfilled by being
creative.
You see, Sherry decided thatcreativity was one of the values
that she really wanted to alignherself with, and her current
role doesn't allow her to becreative the way that she wants
(06:45):
to, but there are opportunitiesfor change inside of her
company.
Now, if there's not.
It may be time to plan for apivot.
If she was not able to findcreative outlet inside her
company, we have to completelydecide on a new direction for
her to go.
That said, we are looking atpossibly taking on this creative
(07:08):
role inside of her company.
If she's unable to do that, wewill have to find her creativity
in other areas.
Maybe that means creatingsomething on your own and
allowing this job to pay you andfund your bills while you build
a business on the side.
Either way, we need to redefinesuccess.
(07:28):
Success is not just a dollaramount in the bank account.
It's not just a dollar amount onyour paycheck.
Success could be energy, joy,impact.
What does success look like foryou?
You see, it's not just thesalary, it's not just the title.
It's waking up energized to domeaningful work.
If we change the measuring stickand we take away the salary and
(07:50):
the title, and we look at thelegacy and we let that be the
measure, the question then isdoes this work, support the life
that I want to build?
Ultimately that is what we areafter.
We're after the peace of mindthat comes from knowing that we
are in the right role at theright place.
I think it's Jim Collins whosays that you need to be in the
(08:12):
right seat on the right bus.
We wanna make sure not only thatwe're doing the right thing,
we're in the right seat, but wewanna make sure that we're going
in the right direction.
We're on the bus that's headingtowards where we wanna go.
Purpose and paychecks.
They're not opposite.
They can be partners, but you'veseen partners, Tom and Jerry,
(08:34):
they're partners.
They don't like each other verymuch.
I would much rather you be Bertand Ernie.
Two people that are not thesame, but that live in harmony
together.
I don't know why Bur and Erniewere the example that came to
mind.
I was having the hardest timethinking of any cartoon
character that liked each other, and I was like coming up with,
(08:56):
you know, Sylvester and Tweety.
I was like, Nope, that's thesame thing as the negative.
So anyway what's your actionstep this week?
It's pretty simple.
I want you to journal about yourcurrent job and the alignment
within journaling.
Doesn't have to be crazy ifjournaling, writing things down
is not your thing.
What I would like for you to dois to get out a piece of paper
(09:17):
and a pen or pencil, and I wantyou to just allow your close
your eyes and allow your pen togo over the paper.
It doesn't have to make anythingcohesive.
It doesn't have to make anythingpretty, but I want your hand to
be moving in a utensil on apiece of paper while you were
(09:37):
thinking about and dreamingabout your current job and how
it aligns with where you wannabe.
Ultimately, what's workinginside your current position,
what's not working, and what doyou want more of?
This could be a great time foryou to think about what you want
your core values to be and tojournal about those as well.
(09:59):
If creativity is a core value, what does that look like?
If freedom is a core valuefreedom, how freedom and what?
And then I would love for you tobook a free 20 minute career
audit with me.
